BLAZERS PARTICIPATE IN ONE LOVE

ESCALATION WORKSHOP

On Wednesday October 14, the Blazers gathered together to attend the One Love Foundation Escalation Workshop in honor of Yeardley Reynolds Love who was a member of the UVA Lacrosse Team. In 2010, just weeks short of her college graduation, Yeardley Love was beaten to death by her boyfriend who was also a member of the UVA Men’s Lacrosse Team. The One Love Foundation was created by her family and founded in 2010 to spread awareness of relationship violence. The Escalation Workshop was created to raise awareness about relationship violence, educate students on the warnings signs of abusive relationships, to educate students on how to intervene in their own relationships or in a friend’s, and to create a safe space for students to discuss the issue of unhealthy relationships, their campus culture, and beliefs about healthy relationships, while inspiring them to continue the conversation. The workshop consisted of a 40 minute film screening, and 40 minutes of small group guided discussion. 30 of our very own student-athletes were trained the week prior to the workshop and facilitated the small group discussions. The workshop was a huge success of creating awareness and facilitating conversation on the topic with 190 student-athletes present. This workshop was introduced to SAAC Coordinator, Caitlin Callaghan, this past summer at the NACWAA Leadership Symposium. UAB is now one of 250 colleges across the country who has partnered with the One Love Foundation.

BLAZERS DRESS TO IMPRESS AT THE 2ND ANNUAL FASHION SHOW

On Monday, October 19th the Blazers gathered for the Second Annual Dress to Impress Fashion Show to demonstrate what to wear and what not to wear in a professional setting. This year featured new additions including a judges’ panel, sponsors from The Pants Store and Belk at the Summit, and a red carpet with sparkling cider to celebrate. 11 Student-Athletes participated as models for the event, and the night was hosted by Bianca Dufelmeier of Women’s Basketball and Holt Davis of Men’s Baseball. The judges’ panel consisted of Miss UAB Melanie Roberts, Derita Ratcliffe UAB Athletics’ SWA, Cory Schlesinger of Strength and Conditioning and David Fortner of Enterprise. The night began with the red carpet, followed up with the show, and had a phenomenal lip sync competition for intermission. More than 100 student-athletes came out to participate in this event, and we are so excited for what’s to come in the future years for this program. A VERY SPECIAL thank you to The Pants Store and Belk at the Summit for sponsoring our event!
