REGIONAL OUTREACH

Merce Poindexter (FSU) and Brad Horton (GSU) are doing a phenomenal job coordinating the N4A ECC Committee’s Regional Outreach Initiatives.

REGION I: BOSTON NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY

REGION II:

With the collaborative effort of the ECC and the Region I event planning staff, we hosted a school supply drive for a program called “Care for Kenya,” providing much needed school supplies to schools in Kenya, Africa. Two SAAC members from Northeastern University will travel to Kenya this upcoming summer from July 3rd - 13th to deliver all of the school supplies that have been donated. This program is in its second year, and it was very exciting to continue to support this program!

Continuing collaborative efforts with the regional planning staff, we hosted a school supply drive for the Gavin H. Cochran Elementary School. This UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE school is comprised of students from grades K-5 and has been serving students in the Louisville area for decades. We were able to fill up two bins of school supplies to donate to the school’s students.

REGION III:

At this regional conference we hosted a school supply drive for the Columbus City Schools District Office. The Columbus area had several the ohio state university schools in need, so all of the school supplies that were donated during the conference will be delivered to Columbus City Schools’ main office and they will distribute the supplies to schools individually. Two big Tupperware containers were filled up during this conference to donate to the schools. In collaboration with the Texas Tech academic staff, we were able to

REGION IV:

coordinate an initial eligibility workshop at Duncanville Fieldhouse in Duncanville, TX (Greater Dallas Area). We had 35 attendees from local Southern Methodist University area schools. As a result of the initial eligibility workshop, we have established a network in the Dallas area that has requested more programming like this. The initial eligibility workshop was definitely a success!

SUB-COMMITTEE SPOTLIGHT Participation & Initiative Development Ron Moses, Ashlesha Lockehande, & Rochelle Robinson

The Participation and Initiative Development sub-committee has been planning and implementing some great initiatives in the areas of research, development, and communication. They are working on research projects with goals of submitting a paper to a peer-reviewed journal and beginning to build a database for best practices in multicultural athletic advising, and developing standard presentations for individual members to present at regional meetings and conferences. Additionally they are working on increased membership participation, and this quarterly newsletter. The Ethnic Concerns Committee is excited to collaborate with the Black Student-Athlete Conference in Austin Texas on January 6-8, 2016 by presenting on the holistic development of the African American Student-Athlete. They are also working on a LinkedIn Forum this forum will give way to the launch of the ECC network within the N4A member community. They are also in the process of proposing a PDI diversity track for next year’s annual convention.

HBCU Involvement Steve Duzan & Yashica Martin

This subcommittee has been developing partnerships with the NCAA and has specifically formed a partnership with Wendy Walters, Director of Membership Services for the NCAA. The NCAA is sponsoring a program review for HBCUs called Accelerated Academic Success Program Process (AASP) where they will be able to learn about areas and gain feedback on which they can improve and what areas they are excelling in. Jackson State University and Mississippi Valley State University were singled out for their extraordinary efforts in the AASP process. Steve Duzan will be representing our committee by administering the program review at Morgan State University within this academic term. This committee is also discussing the possibility of a PDI Diversity Track.
