in the news
After winning the Conference USA title in Birmingham, the UAB Blazers continued to make a statement during the second round of the NCAA tournament by beating Iowa State in Louisville, Kentucky. While the big win for the Blazers was making national sports news and busting many people’s brackets, the Blazers raised global awareness for pediatric cancer by continuing their season-long initiative supporting The Alabama Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s of Alabama. National and local newspapers were swarming with the story of UAB Men’s Basketball’s Committed to a Cure initiative. During head coach Jerod Haase’s first season at UAB, the Blazers adopted a young cancer survivor named Elijah Seritt. Since then, Elijah and his family have been a major part of the Blazers’ men’s basketball program. If you Google “UAB Mismatched Shoes” approximately 12,900 results are available featuring articles on this topic. Not only were these Blazers making news for their athletic excellence, but their spirit of service made national news, leading to international news as well. Players, coaches and support staff received multiple phone calls, emails and text messages about this cause. The Blazers’ story was also spread throughout all types of social media.

recognition UAB SAAC NAMED
VOLUNTEER GROUP OF THE YEAR!
ALABAMA
On Tuesday, April 14, 2015 the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama named UAB SAAC the Volunteer Group of the Year! Throughout the past two years a majority of the UAB Student-Athlete population has dedicated their time, service, and enthusiasm working with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama. Twice per month UAB student-athletes visit the Ronald McDonald House to provide their service through a variety of activities. Throughout the past two years, our athletes have participated in their Red Shoe Run, holiday activities including Halloween and Christmas, and cleaned the house for the families staying there. In addition to these activities, UAB Student-Athletes have also played with the children staying there, and have donated gifts and raised money for the Ronald McDonald House during the holiday season.

With the foundation laid in the first year, the program will continue to implement its Career Game Plan through providing steps and goals for each student-athlete to complete during each year of their collegiate experience to develop and obtain career and professional success.
