SUSTAIN ABILITY

TVS has helped clients benefit from many aspects of sustainable design since the firm’s inception in 1968. Our staff of LEED and WELL Accredited Professionals works to find a balance of social, environmental and economic factors in our projects drawing from our experience in LEED Platinum and WELL certified projects. As a leader in the integration of sustainable practices with client satisfaction and design innovation, TVS has the capacity to develop any project according to the client’s desired level of environmental responsibility. With over 57 LEED Certified projects we’ve received countless awards for creating remarkable designs for our clients and communities.

We have pursued the Living Building Challenge 4.0 on several projects at a conceptual level, but those projects did not continue with the program.

PLACE

Our green roofs include farm to table urban roof gardens, extensive and intensive vegetated roofs.

WATER

We use climate responsive passive design strategies to reduce water demand on our projects.

ENERGY

We use passive design strategies to reduce energy demand on our projects.

HEALTH + HAPPINESS

Our designs promote healthy habits.

MATERIALS

We specify low carbon materials.

EQUITY

Work with client to develop equitable access to, and protections from negative impacts.

BEAUTY

Design to include elements that nurture the innate human/nature connection.

TVS was recognized by United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and the International Well Building Institute (IWBI) as the first organization ever to achieve both LEED and WELL Platinum through a streamlined, dual track. This path encourages and simplifies the process for both certifications and for TVS to have achieved the highest level of both standards speaks to the firm’s commitment to embracing human and planetary health.

The design team’s focus wasn’t necessarily to pursue points to certification. It was to do the best job possible across all aspects of the projects , given very challenging budgetary and time constraints. When considering design options, the team weighed them for their near- and long-term impact on the firm’s collective wellbeing – what solution would be the most equitable, provide the best environment to do good work, use resources most effectively and sustainably?

Ultimately, these certifications were achieved through initiatives like:

- Reuse of 60% of furniture plus ceiling systems and lighting

- A scrappy, DIY sensibility – in house 3D printed signage

- Carbon negative and recycled materials

- Daylighting studies

- Connection to nature via terrace

- Biophilia

As the team approached the end of the project it became clear that, with a small push, they could meet the Platinum requirements for LEED and WELL. The new streamlined process made that possible and this new approach is strongly recommended.

WE DEVELOP SOLUTIONS THAT ARE TAILORED TO YOUR BUSINESS AND DESIGNED TO FLEX AND CHANGE WITH YOU.

As designers committed to creating success for our clients, we make remarkable design easy.We listen first to immerse ourselves into your culture. We learn where you are now and where you plan to go. CONVENTION CENTERS

JAVITS CENTER, EXPANSION

New York City | New York

In 2016, a Lendlease and Turner Construction joint venture embarked on the $1.5 billion designbuild expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Manhattan’s West Side. The New York Convention Center Development Corporation sought to expand the iconic facility, originally constructed in the 1980s, to compete with other convention centers around the world while providing significant economic enhancement to the State and City of New York. Collaborating with TVS, a renowned designer of convention facilities, the joint venture was able to optimize the indicative design, reduce costs and improve the schedule.

A 100-person onsite and colocated team designed and constructed the 1.2 million sf expansion spanning two city blocks. This included the addition of 90,000 sf of exposition space, 200,000 sf of prefunction and meeting room space, a 6,000-person special event space, and a four-level truck marshalling and loading dock structure. The new loading docks are a key component of this project, as they remove thousands of idle trucks from the surrounding city streets, thereby alleviating congestion and improving air quality for nearby residents. During the design process, the scope of the project was expanded to include a rooftop pavilion, an outdoor terrace, and a one-acre urban farm.

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 1,200,000 sf total

- 90,000 sf additional exhibit space resulting in 500,000 sf of contiguous exhibit space

- 45,000 sf additional meeting rooms

- 55,000 sf ballroom

- 3,200 sf greenhouse set within an urban farm of approximately one acre

- 15,000 sf flexible event space

- Custom glass door for inside/out events

LAS VEGAS CONVENTION CENTER, WEST HALL EXPANSION

Las Vegas | Nevada

The history of the Las Vegas Convention Center is the history of the city. It’s a history of the Las Vegas experience, a brand and an ongoing project to invent new limits and surpass them. It’s the same as the city’s project for the future. The LVCC West Hall Expansion is an extension of that experience. It draws its energy and returns it to the most Exciting City in the World. Its presence, its technology, must communicate that brand, a sense of destiny and destination. It must move people, physically and in the imagination.

The design begins with visual reach and experience that unifies the campus across the distance from the Strip to the South Hall. Access and program punctuate the campus between those two endpoints; nodes made cohesive by a ‘ribbon’ of circulation. Echoing the region’s mountains, the ribbon is amplified at significant points to unite, announce entry and celebrate the act of gathering; an orienting path for the eyes, the feet and the mind. The ribbon is a wayfinding landscape of seamless connection and graphic activation from end to end, continuous and customizable to announce and activate the LVCC and make it a visible player from Las Vegas Boulevard and its hotels; an artery of Vegas experience piped straight from the Strip.

The design creates a compact, economical arrangement of program to for the flexibilities that result from leaving much of the site open; an advantage for outdoor exhibit local to the Strip, for further expansion and response to surrounding development.

- 75,000 sm column free exhibit space

- 30,000 sm outdoor exhibition space

- 33,000 sm free-standing center with

27 meeting rooms

Junior ballroom

Grand ballroom

- 800 seat plenary hall

- 300,000 sm office, hotel, retail, and exhibition space

The Phase III Expansion of the Nanjing International Exposition Center is the culmination of the ongoing convention district development since the first phase opened in 2008. The 8.2 hectare Phase III site is located at the south side of the Phase I across Jinsha River West Road and offers a dramatic grand lobby on Jiang Dong Avenue. A secondary lobby serves the recently completed development to the west of the site designed by Zaha Hadid. This new expansion totals 236,000 sm and features a 50,000 sm exhibition hall and a 14,600 sm merchandise mart as program complements to the original Phase I campus. Separated from the exhibition hall by a pedestrian laneway are three high rise office/hotel towers atop a podium with 21,200 sm of retail and entertainment venues.

The design of the new Phase III expansion complements the forms and materials of the original Phase I campus while incorporating a more diverse environment associated with vibrant urban retail districts. Both the exhibition hall roof and the faceted high rise tower facades further evoke the architectural vocabulary of the Phase I campus and express the dynamic movement of sport in celebrating the successful International Youth Olympics that Nanjing hosted on the site in 2014. Also, the three towers located of the south podium fulfill the ‘urban wall’ aspirations of the original master plan for the Youth Olympic Boulevard.

Finally, and most importantly, Phase III boasts a 400 meter long pedestrian laneway between the exhibition hall and south podium that realizes an urban design goal for the greater Hexi District of a comprehensive system of separate, dedicated pedestrian environments. The laneway provides a dynamic offering of retail and entertainment venues in service to exhibition attendees and residents of Hexi.

JIO WORLD CONVENTION CENTRE

Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai | India

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 18.5 acres

- 8,500,000 sf entire complex

- 1,000,000 sf convention center

- Three exhibit halls spanning 162,000 sf (16,500 guests)

- Two convention halls totaling 108,000 sf (10,640 guests)

- 32,300 sf ballroom (3,200 guests)

- 140,000 sf prefunction

- Kitchen (18,000 meals a day)

- 5,000 space on-site parking

- 2,000 seat theater

Mumbai was in need of a multifaceted, flexible venue that could host distinguished events and establish India’s ability to deliver superlative exhibitions, conventions and conferences. The goal was to create a series of spaces future-proofed for large, small, international and state events. It was critical that the venues would be capable of simultaneously hosting events while incorporating the most advanced technology and a committed support team to take care of all requirements.

Accessibility for all was a major driver for this convention center – the owners were clear that it must defy socio-cultural standards rooted in class, and be a true gift to the city of Mumbai and its citizens.

The convention centre is enormous with several entry and exit points and is designed in a way that one does not see a straight line all the way down while looking ahead. Instead, the design of the centre is scalloped, giving each entry a unique element, yet a sense of repetition and a sense of movement and flow. The entire flex hall’s ceiling is covered with a jaali, the modern silver metal of the CEC transitioning to a warmer gold. With an area totaling 515,900 sf, this facility is currently India’s largest convention and exhibition center, containing several entry and exit points.

The CEC concourse design is scalloped, giving each three-story entry a unique element, yet a sense of repetition, movement and flow. A stand-out element is the striking, hand-crafted Lasvit chandeliers in the pre-function lobbies. The chandeliers lend each area their own identity. Earth, fire, air and water – sacred elements in Indian philosophy – provide the perfect design inspiration. The concourse ceilings also follow the same iconic lotus-petal theme and have sound absorptive materials that reduce the reflected sound and lets one take in and enjoy their impressive surroundings.

RENASANT CONVENTION CENTER, RENOVATION

Memphis | Tennessee

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 550,000 sf

- 300,000 sf flexible meeting, exhibit and prefunction

- 46 flexible meeting rooms

- 118,000 sf column-free exhibit hall

- 28,000 sf ballroom

- 2,000 seat performing arts theater

- 460,000 annual visitors

The fully transformed Renasant Convention Center has debuted in Memphis, Tennessee. The $200M modernization includes a total transformation of the footprint of the building, enabling it to meet the demands of meeting planners and groups for hotel-quality meeting space and give Memphis a competitive edge for attracting more regional meetings and conventions business.

The convention center, formerly known as the Memphis Cook Convention Center, originally opened along the city’s riverfront in 1974. A highly competitive meetings and event market drove massive change for the center and city. In 2018, the city announced the decision to embark on a renovation and total transformation of the convention center that would enhance the space and feature upgrades that include hotel-quality finishes and amenities throughout. With the aging and land-locked convention center nearing the end of its useful lifespan, the goal of the site selection study was to evaluate all the available site opportunities in the city for a new state of the art convention center.

The team studied multiple site options and ranked them based on a clear set of criteria established by the stakeholders. Each site was evaluated to see if the program and future expansion would fit. At the end of this process, two sites were shortlisted for further development and testing: a site adjacent to the existing center and a site along Beale Street in the center of the tourist/entertainment district. Concept designs were developed for both options to show the layout of the center and its massing and design potential. The resulting report identified the cost, logistics and schedule for both options and became the starting point for a more focused discussion on the future of conventions in Memphis.

MUSIC CITY CENTER

Nashville | Tennessee

Located along Fifth Street, just a few blocks from the historic Ryman Auditorium and numerous other music and cultural venues, the Music City Center, opened in 2013, and brought new life to the South of Broadway (SOBRO) neighborhood of Nashville.

The design team of TVS/Tuck-Hinton Architects/Moody Nolan, Inc. Architects studied the underutilized area of SOBRO and gave careful consideration to the placement of the facility’s many functional elements that affect the surrounding area. The design turns a positive face to surrounding neighborhoods by concealing service areas and placing potential commercial or cultural venues with lively public concourses along main pedestrian and vehicular corridors. The planned extension of Korean Veterans Boulevard has also taken place to enhance cross-city connectivity along KVB.

The plan for the Music City Center was to serve as a catalyst for new business by respecting the surrounding neighborhood and turning a welcoming face to the community. It also connects the rich music history of Nashville to a new home for expositions, meetings and tourism.

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 1,200,000 sf

- 350,000 sf exhibit halls

- 58,000 sf ballrooms

- 120,000 sf meeting rooms

- 1,800 space parking garage

SAVANNAH CONVENTION CENTER, EXPANSION

Savannah | Georgia

The Savannah Convention Center is located on Hutchinson Island across the river from the downtown Savannah Historic Landmark District. The existing facility opened in 2000 with 100,000 sf of exhibit space, 13 meeting rooms, a 25,000 sf ballroom, 367 seat auditorium and four boardrooms. The SCC is experiencing growth in the convention market. To facilitate this growth and continue to be competitive in the market, they are expanding their facility by doubling the size of the existing center.

New entry plazas and arrival zones with monumental facades will greet visitors arriving from the north and east. New registration lobbies serving the expanded exhibition space will be located adjacent to the entry plazas. The new ballroom will be placed on the third floor directly above the northernmost new exhibit hall. It will have prefunction space along the north and east side. A large roof terrace providing views to the city will be adjacent to the east prefunction. The new meeting rooms will be located on levels one and two along the new extension of the east concourse. The new parking garage has five levels and will be placed directly above the exhibit loading area.

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 100,000 sf of exhibit space (in two divisions)

- 65,000 sf ballrooms

- 23,000 sf meeting rooms (15 total)

- 950 space parking garage

CHARLOTTE CONVENTION CENTER, EXPANSION

Charlotte | North Carolina

The Charlotte Convention Center, designed by TVS, originally opened in 1995. Since then the needs of meeting planners and convention attendees have evolved, requiring investment in the facility to deliver a competitive experience. Based on recommendations from a market study commissioned by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, TVS explored a series of potential improvements, and together with the staff, developed a master plan for expanding and enhancing the facility.

A major need identified by the study was for additional meeting space. Since there is no available land adjacent to the center, it was not possible to expand beyond the existing building’s footprint to create this space. TVS investigated and found ways to expand the building vertically by adding new floor space above the existing exhibit halls. This additional space provides 26,000 sf of new meeting space. This new area also creates a new public concourse façade along Stonewall Street, the previously neglected backside of the building, greatly improving the center’s connectivity to the city.

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 860,000 sf convention center

- 275,000 sf exhibit hall

- 35,000 sf ballroom

- 58,000 sf meeting space

RENOVATION AND EXPANSION

- 8,400 sf new kitchen

- 15,000 sf new arena lobby

- LEED Certified

Inspired by the nearby Kanawha River and its historic role as a social organizing link within the rugged landscape that defines the region, the project’s design features three large glass-enclosed lobby nodes, corresponding to each of the building’s major program elements. These iconic spaces instill a navigational clarity to the complex and help to define a unique Charleston event campus.

The formal language of the design draws on the uniqueness of the local geography, and specifically the cut rock faces that line the excavated throughways which connect various population centers in the state. The interior palette draws its inspiration from the various mineral and other extractive resources which are the lifeblood of the state.

A new 15,000 sf entry lobby along Clendenin Street provides a much needed front door for the existing arena and establishes an active link to urban retail at the adjacent Charleston Town Center. A new lobby entry on the south side of the building redefines the main vehicular drop-off for the convention center, while at the west end of the campus, the new 20,000 sf ballroom extends the building footprint to the edge of the Elk River.

COLORADO CONVENTION CENTER, RENOVATION AND EXPANSION

Denver | Colorado

As one of the country’s leading convention and exhibition venues, The Colorado Convention Center wanted to significantly increase their offering of meeting, banquet and light exhibition space through a proposed expansion – creating an unrivaled dynamic, flexible and destination-oriented venue. In addition to this new world-class flexible venue will be a dramatic roof terrace, with panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains, which can be marketed as a stand-alone venue or as an outdoor extension of the multifunction space and its associated prefunction space.

Taken together, the three venues – multifunction, prefunction and outdoor terrace – are designed to immerse guests in the magnificent Colorado experience. These new venues and the majority of their associated support spaces are located on the rooftop and served by two independent routes of public access such that the expansion program can operate independently and simultaneously from the rest of the building. The character and quality of these expansion spaces is to be consistent with a venue destined to be Denver’s preeminent civic ballroom destination. It’s an aesthetic that rewards patrons with a memorable and authentic experience.

NINGXIA INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER

Yinchaun | China

The Ningxia International Convention Center is the premier meeting, exposition, and performance center in central China and is the heart of the Ningxia master plan development. The building is an architectural landmark in the city. Rooted with concepts of local culture, yet conveying a strong Islamic identity, this iconic structure symbolizes the collaboration between the two worlds. Inspired by ancient Chinese metaphors and strong Islamic artistic patterns, this center is a harmonious merging of both cultures.

The design concept is inspired by both Chinese and Arabic cultural elements. The primary concept is the use of the circle and the square. In both cultures, pure geometries have significant influence throughout history. In China, the ancient coin, for example, is a strong metaphor for harmony between heaven (the circle) and earth (the square). In the Muslim culture, the combination of the circle and the square is called the Mandala motif, and is recognized as the unifying intermediary between the materialism and the spiritual world.

WALTER E. WASHINGTON CONVENTION CENTER

Washington DC

This design and its prominent location—tying together a series of public monuments— preserves the L’Enfant master plan city grid with the suggestion of three connected buildings, allowing two streets to run through the complex and maintain the continuity of the neighborhood. The team worked in continuous collaboration with the client and civic groups and within tight urban constraints—including the placement of one story below grade to meet the 110 foot height restriction.

While the architecture is modernistic on a monumental scale, the grand entry atrium façade opposite The Carnegie Library is a fitting invitation to a new national meeting place. Generous fenestration and placement of concourses, registration areas, and lobbies around the perimeter reveal the activity inside to the streets outside. As Washington DC’s largest building, the center reestablished the city’s place in the meetings and convention industry, and has created new economic opportunity for the surrounding neighborhood. The center has received the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA) Design Award for Architecture and the Urban Land Institute’s 2006 Award of Excellence.

NEW CHINA INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION CENTER

Beijing | China

In an international competition-winning design, TVS presented a master plan for the New China International Exhibition Center that encompasses a mixed use development as well as the country’s premier exhibition complex. In keeping with Beijing’s vision of livable work environments and significant green space development, the plan links the site to the nearby Wen Yu River and the proposed green belt that runs its length.

Drawing from a legacy of monumental civic design that is characteristically Chinese, the 354,000 sm exhibition center has at its heart a series of gardens arranged along a central northsouth axis extended from the river. The building is a minimally expressive framework for these spaces, a grouping of wall planes, gates, and pavilions that serve to create layers of space and enclose these outdoor rooms. For maximum flexibility, public access is distributed around all sides of the center, alternating with discreet and separate access points for service vehicles. To be built in two phases, the first phase will include eight exhibit halls with a total of 170,000 sm of exhibit and support space.

GEORGIA WORLD CONGRESS CENTER, COMPLEX

Atlanta | Georgia

In the past large public meeting centers were widely perceived as cold, monolithic, and introverted. That trend ended with the 1976 opening of the Georgia World Congress Center (GWCC).

The TVS team pioneered the light filled linear concourse, a highly functional main passageway. All meeting and exhibit space flows from the concourse, presenting friendly and clear wayfinding. Movement and animation in the design are achieved through the use of generous clerestories, latticed steel and strong interior patterns: the interplay of light and shadows further animating the visitor’s experience.

A resounding economic success, tvsdesign’s third expansion brought the total space to over 3,500,000 sf. Built entirely on underutilized land, much of it right over railroad tracks, GWCC is integrated with a master plan for the surrounding urban area which tvsdesign has designed over the years; including the Georgia Dome, CNN Center, the Omni Hotel, and the connecting green space, Georgia International Plaza.

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

SPORTS

MERCEDES-BENZ STADIUM,

PREMIUM SPACES AND THE HOME DEPOT BACKYARD

Atlanta | Georgia

TVS created 250,000 sf of hospitality-inspired premium clubs, suites and concourse zones that reinvented the game day experience. The client wanted an iconic, unparalleled fan experience that would get fans off their sofas and away from the convenience of their home environments. The new stadium had to be compelling enough to keep the fan coming back. The result more than met the client’s desire – guests are arriving early to the game and leaving late, enjoying all the stadium has to offer. A testament to this response is that more food and beverage is sold now before the beginning of the game than was sold during the entire game at the old Georgia Dome. The stadium’s distinct hospitality-driven spaces provide options that appeal to a variety of demographics, serving as multifunctional alternative revenue streams and elevate the guest experience. The client wanted these premium spaces to become the benchmark for best in class spaces, not only in the sports and entertainment industry, but across all luxury guest services industries. Today’s stadium-goers are seeking memorable, authentic and highly personalized experiences that deliver the unexpected.

CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE OF ATLANTA

TRAINING GROUND, ATLANTA UNITED FC

Marietta | Georgia

The newly established Atlanta United Football Club needed a home base for its players and employees, fans and community members. The team vision of inclusion and excellence guided the design of the facility which serves as not just the training grounds for the team, but also a home for the youth team, corporate workforce, and community events.

The client commissioned the designers to create a custom facility from the ground up, with avant-garde amenities to make this training facility much more than a locker room, but an inspirational, united wellness and fitness center that would attract future talent. The training gym was designed to be interconnected, featuring bestin-class equipment, a garage door that opens to the fields, and a second level observation window. It is adjoined by a series of rooms dedicated to on-site sports medicine, including a physiotherapy room with exam tables, a hydrotherapy room, and a sauna. The first team’s locker room is located at the heart of the facility, giving the players a communal place to prepare for training. The upper level dining area has an open kitchen to train the players in how and what to cook and eat, and long communal tables allow the team to eat together and spend time together off of the field. Connecting these player spaces to the corporate office spaces in the facility is an open, two-story lobby with full windows facing the fields which doubles as a private event space and reinforces the focus on providing a hospitality-driven atmosphere that encourages gathering, conversation, team bonding, and community participation.

GOVERNORS LAKE ARENA, PRACTICE FACILITY AND MIXED-USE DISTRICT

Atlanta | Georgia

Given a challenging 90 acre site with rolling topography and an existing lake, our design team worked to develop a sense of place via several alternatives centered about a new 8,000 seat, 18 suite, 140,000 sf indoor arena and attached two-sheet ice practice facility with a variety of retail, dining and residential elements.

The first approach is a more urban, energized plan that brings program components together on a pedestrian street called URBAN PROMENADE. Another approach brings all functions together around the lake in a design called THE BOARDWALK. THE PAVILION IN THE PARK is an approach that celebrates the natural contours and forest, bringing customers and visitors an increased sense of wellbeing that nature provides. And, lastly we have the FRONT ROW, that puts the Hockey brand right up front, creating an identity for the development that is bold and forever joined with the team and the venue experience.

Each scheme has strengths and potential challenges, depending on the vision and circumstances, that recommend them. All schemes create an unforgettable experience and capitalize on the natural amenities present at the Lakefront site.

CULTURAL ARTS

LONGGANG INTERNATIONAL ARTS CENTER

Shenzen | China

The design of the Longgang International Arts Center seeks to express the lyrical beauty inherent in the forms, details, and materials of traditional musical instruments native to China such as the Pipa, xun, and erhu. More importantly, the design encourages the visitors to imaginatively place themselves inside these musical instruments through invoking their hidden interior spaces and the quality of natural light that enters through their diverse sound and finger openings. The world class performing arts venues, a 1,600 seat grand auditorium and a 600 seat auditorium, and are located in a pavilion recalling the body of a pipa adjacent to the hotel complex and Shenzhen Metro subway stop. A third venue, an experimental black box capable of entertaining over 300 patrons for music, dance or lecture events, is housed in freestanding pavilion in the grand event courtyard that evokes the form and materiality of a xun. The goal of uniting the entire experience of arrival in the grand event courtyard and dramatic preshow foyers with the three venues is to provide a continuous immersive experience of entertainment. The performance venues are complimented by a dramatic 2,000 sm multipurpose hall, foyer bars, and a ground level café. World class accommodations for the performers include three rehearsal halls, VIP dressing rooms, and stateof-the-art scenographic rigging and audiovisual mixing. The design strives to establish meaningful connections between Huangjinshan Park and the central event courtyard while the colonnade along Beier Road provides a grand urban façade for visitors.

The overall design of the Grand Theatre and all its intricate layers celebrates the luxurious level of craft and design that reflects the richness of color, detail and pattern of India making this a singular world experience.

The Grand Theatre features exquisite jewel-toned Sicis mosaic glass tiles from Italy; customized laser-cut meta jaali screens from Dubai; acoustic micro-perforated walnut wood with the ability to absorb sound from Greece; handrails, door frames and millwork from Muscat; custom-colored fabric from Germany and walnut clad seating from Italy.

ATLANTA CIVIC

CENTER, PERFORMING ARTS CENTER AND EXHIBIT HALL, CONCEPT DESIGN

Atlanta | Georgia

AREA + ATTRIBUTES

- 30,000 sf total (existing and new)

- 2,000 seat theater

- 500 seat theater

- 1,200 seat concert venue

- 300 and 500 seat dinner theater

The project envisions a renovated civic center to celebrate and grow Atlanta and Georgia’s music industry. The arts portion of the master plan include two main pieces – a former exhibit hall transformed into a concert/restaurant/retail venue and an expansion to the performing arts center. The existing column-free exhibit hall building is repositioned to house a 1,600 seat concert venue supported by a destination restaurant and retail storefront. The design takes advantage of the substantial structure of the existing exhibit hall to leverage flexibility for multiple stage configurations. The venue sits adjacent to a large urban pedestrian plaza with access to public transit, retail, restaurants, and other district amenities. Vehicular access is arranged around the plaza and provides for discreet service access.

The renovated and expanded performing arts center is envisioned as discreet glass facade capped with an accessible landscape. The design allows the original, historic center to remain primary and visible from the street. This discreet addition houses a new 500 seat theater and supplements the existing facility with rehearsal, artist, and operational spaces. The attraction is envisioned as a sensitive addition to the west and south of the civic center, one that reinforces the landmark’s relationship to the large public plaza to the north, while providing an iconic street presence along both Piedmont and Ralph McGill.

The team aspires to preserve the entry lobby experience of the civic center, along with the monumental façade facing the plaza. Similarly, the expansion is planned with entrances to the north of the existing grand plaza, and to the south, at the main corner and intersection of Midtown and Downtown Atlanta Districts.

WOODRUFF ARTS CENTER, STUDY

Atlanta | Georgia

Working with Theatre Projects and Talaske (acoustical consultants), TVS developed a fresh new configuration in keeping with the Alliance Theater’s inclusive, community-building philosophy and importance as a social voice in the Atlanta Arts Community.

The redesigned Alliance Theater offers an intimate configuration where patrons can see one another enjoying the theater experience. Warm wood railings, seatbacks and panels create a comfortable and inviting group setting. Architectural lighting washes walls and coordinates with performances to develop a sense of spatial drama. And detailed catwalks and lighting positions express the technical craft of the theater. On the exterior, the project developed a greater street presence for the Alliance Theater through the creation of a new entrance, development of supplementary meeting and performance venues, and the expansion of the Woodruff Arts Center’s shared lobby.

In the Symphony Hall Renovation and Redesign Study, TVS worked with Aurerbach Pollock Friedlander (theater consultant) and Threshold Acoustics (acoustic consultants). The 46-year-old Symphony Hall would be completely transformed through this redesign, which includes dramatically improving the acoustic performance of the hall to serve the needs of the classical symphonic repertoire of the Atlanta Symphonic Orchestra (ASO) and the active, diverse presentations that appeal to younger audiences of the ASO Presents program. In addition to transforming the hall’s acoustic performance and design, this renovation and expansion study also addressed the development of support and rehearsal space. A new glass enclosed wing would allow the public to observe rehearsals in a new rehearsal hall and would provide a meet and greet space for performers and patrons after events.

The addition also highlights the Woodruff Arts Center’s symphonic functions with an enhanced entrance and redesigned lobbies and public spaces.

XIAN CHANBA ECOLOGICAL DISTRICT,

URBAN PLANNING AND CONCEPT DESIGN

The Xian Chanba Ecological Park draws its inspiration from the twin representations in Chinese mythology of the Great Circle for the sky and the square for the earth. The sinuous architectural language of the park and its pavilions are also inspired by the Chinese concepts of unity and flow as they relate to both the river and the graceful movement and ennobling spirit of athletics. The park’s pavilions are arranged in four groups, with commercial mixed-use in the south, unity and flow pavilions in the center and a museum and library district in the north. The central unity and flow pavilions house the broadcast center, theatres, science museum, and youth center. The Xian Chanba Ecological Park envisions a dramatic transformation of the Ba riverfront for the enjoyment of the citizens of Xian and guests of the 2021 China National Games. The park features over 15 kilometers of riverfront jogging, bicycling, sports and recreational activities, boat docks and cafes.

The running course is linked by three pedestrian bridges inspired by the movement of the human body and Tai-Chi Chuan. The Xian Chanba Ecological is divided in to five distinct districts with unique landscape pallets of gardens, trees and estuaries for each district to provide the visitors with an experience of the rich natural history of northern China. The centerpiece of the park features 34 interactive fountains representing each of China’s provinces.

The amphitheater stage sits on the southeast corner of the site and faces Rocky Creek and Mercer University Drive. VIP seating are in 10 ‘boxes’ between the pit and fixed seating. Two entrance plazas have concessions, retail amenities, and restrooms, as well as overlooks providing additional VIP opportunities. VAN WEZEL PERFORMING ARTS HALL,

STUDY AND CONCEPT DESIGN

Sarasota | Florida

The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall in Sarasota, Florida hired TVS to study the viability of their existing facility. This design exercise is as a due diligence effort to support their potential development of an adjacent, new indoor performance facility. Key features of the study included measuring the existing building for seating expansion and storm resiliency.

TVS also investigated the property for future-use following plans for a new performing arts center. Reuse focused on alterations to create an outdoor amphitheater, which would not compete for events with the new performing arts center. An outdoor amphitheater would enhance the larger, future arts and park campus development. The study is ongoing and is meant to supplement the client’s decision making for the performing arts center.

ATLANTA CIVIC CENTER

Atlanta | Georgia

TVS leads the cultural concept design and planning portions of a larger SOM/GVS led master planning effort for the redevelopment of the historic Atlanta Civic Center campus.

The repositioning of the Atlanta Civic Center will leverage a symbiotic partnership with a renovated performing arts venue to celebrate and grow Atlanta and Georgia’s music industry. The expansion is envisioned as a sensitive addition to the west and south of the civic center, one that reinforces the landmark’s relationship to the large public plaza to the north, while providing an iconic street presence along both Piedmont and Ralph McGill.

The team aspires to preserve the entry lobby experience of the original civic center, along with the new monumental façade facing the plaza. Similarly, the expansion is planned with its primary exhibit entrance to the north, off of the grand plaza. By orienting the new expansion lobby directly adjacent to the civic center lobby, we envision robust co-hosting of events that can flow across seamlessly.

RED HAT AMPHITHEATER

Raleigh | North Carolina

The City of Raleigh and the convention center authority are relocating the existing Red Hat Amphitheater, coupling its redevelopment with an expansion to the existing Raleigh Convention Center. The new location remains downtown and offers a mix of urban aesthetics and functional design for live performances hosted primarily by Live Nation.

The new amphitheater remains an open-air venue with no roof over the audience area, allowing for a natural, outdoor concert experience. The stage, however, has a roof to protect performers and equipment from the elements. The seating is primarily a combination of loose and fixed seats and benches. Planned capacity is set between around 6,000 to 7,000 people. The amphitheater is built into the heart of downtown Raleigh, giving it a unique blend of cityscape views. It is designed to integrate with the nearby Raleigh Convention Center, which has a striking metallic shimmer that mirrors the modernity of the amphitheater.

The stage is large, with an industrial, minimalist look that features a new curvilinear roof form. The backdrop is often filled with large digital screens that enhance the performance experience with visuals and lighting effects. Despite being outdoors, the venue is designed with acoustics in mind. The orientation of the stage and the seating help ensure that the sound is directed toward the audience and away from city residents, minimizing noise bleed into the surrounding urban environment.
