National Drought Group to address “nationally significant” water shortfall
The National Drought Group has met with the current water shortfall situation in England now defined as a “nationally significant incident.”
Five areas are officially in drought, with six more experiencing prolonged dry weather following the driest six months to July since 1976.
Despite a period of the unsettled weather, many river flows and reservoir levels in England continued to recede compared to June. Rainstorms and showers helped mask the fact that July was still the fifth warmest on record.
August saw a return of drier conditions and the fourth heatwave of the summerputting more pressure on already struggling public water supplies and navigational waterways.
The National Drought Group used the meeting to highlight the water-saving measures each sector is taking. They also praised the public for reducing their own daily usage, with
Yorkshire Water reporting a 10% reduction in domestic demand following their hosepipe ban. This equates to saving up to 80 million litres per day – equivalent to 32 Olympicsized swimming pools.
The less water that is used, the less needs to be abstracted from local rivers – therefore protecting the health of our waterways and wildlife.
The Environment Agency’s Director of Water and NDG chair, Helen Wakeham said: “The current situation is nationally significant, and we are calling on everyone to play their part and help reduce the pressure on our water environment.
“Water companies must continue to quickly fix leaks and lead the way in saving water. We know the challenges farmers are facing and will continue to work with them, other land users, and businesses to ensure everyone acts sustainably.
“We are grateful to the public for following the restrictions, where in place, to conserve water in these dry conditions.
Simple, everyday choices – such as turning off a tap or deleting old emails – also really helps the collective effort to reduce demand and help preserve the health of our rivers and wildlife.”
The heat and climate change also impact human health, through issues
such as heatstroke, dehydration, and respiratory problems.
Speaking after attending the meeting, Water Minister Emma Hardy said: “Working with the National Drought Group, the Government is urgently stepping up its response to ensure we are successfully managing the impacts of ongoing dry weather.
“Water companies must now take action to follow their drought
plans - I will hold them to account if they delay.
“We face a growing water shortage in the next decade. That’s why we are pushing ahead with root and branch reform under our Plan for Change, which includes £104 billion of private investment to build nine reservoirs and new pipes to cut leaks.”

Summer surge in HTA’s water resilience campaign
The vital importance of a long-term water resilience plan has been underlined as the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) stepped up its campaign to ensure that water-related issues faced by its members are recognised and addressed by the government.
As part of this work, the HTA’s Chief Executive, Fran Barnes, attended the National Drought Group and wrote to the Environment Secretary and the Minister responsible for water, urging the delivery of a long-term water resilience strategy. The HTA has also published an updated water briefing for its members.
The warm, dry spring may have initially boosted sales but the prolonged hot and dry weather has come with significant consequences to the horticultural industry and highlights an urgent need for action on water resilience, beyond short-term interventions on immediate crises from flooding to drought.
Fran Barnes, Chief Executive of the Horticultural Trades
Association (HTA), said: “No member I’ve spoken to takes water for granted. Yet businesses within the environmental horticulture sector operate within a system that offers little support and presents many barriers to water resilience.
Growers that want to invest in their own water storage face complex planning hurdles and many are forced to rely on expensive, treated mains water simply to keep their crops alive. Each summer, misleading ‘hosepipe ban’ headlines target our sector, confuse customers, dampen plant sales, and damage confidence, just when trade should be thriving.
“I have written to the Environment Secretary, Rt Hon Steve Reed MP, urging him to act on creating a plan for water resilience that supports our members in creating their own water resilience strategies, making it easier for them to invest in reservoirs or new watersaving technologies. We can no longer go from flood to drought. Water resilience is an essential part of UK infrastructure.
“Environmental Horticulture is vitally important to the UK’s climate change mitigation plans, improving biodiversity, helping with urban cooling and flood management, but a lack of water resilience and headlines of ‘hosepipe bans’ rather than wider messages about responsible water use are a missed opportunity

that undermines our sector. We need strategic change. I have made a clear call to government for a new focus, debate and action on water resilience, unlocking the barriers to water storage and ensuring horticulture experts can be part of a constructive way forward for the UK’s water sector.”
The HTA is continuing its water resilience journey with a Sustainability Roadmap, highlighting the need to increase water efficiency in the industry, whilst raising understanding in government of the critical importance of water to ornamental horticulture and landscaping.

• UK garden centres and ornamental growers use around 20 million cubic metres of water a year – that is just 0.2% of the UK’s total water use.
• 50% of UK ornamental plant growers use rainwater capture systems, and 32% do not, but would like to.
• 41% of growers use reservoirs to store water, minimising reliance on mains during times of shortage.
• 58% of garden centres use automated watering systems for at least some of their watering, increasing efficiency and reducing workload for staff.
• 74% of the water a garden centre uses is for watering plants, 8% on customer toilets, and 13% on the café/restaurant. The rest is used for other purposes.

New API report shows a steep decline in outdoor play provision
A new national survey commissioned by the Association of Play Industries, and carried out by The Education Company, reveals a concerning picture of outdoor play provision in England’s primary schools.
The survey found a sharp drop-off in outdoor play as children move through primary school. While 78% of Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) settings use outdoor areas throughout the day, only 16% of Key Stage 2 (KS2) classes do the same.
Similarly, play-based outdoor learning is nearly universal in EYFS (98%) but falls to just 10% in KS2.
“Schools are telling us they want to do more,” says API Chair, Dr Amanda Gummer. “They understand the benefits but they need support, funding and guidance to make their outdoor ambitions a reality.
“Outdoor play should be protected, funded and celebrated at every stage of a child’s school journey. If we’re serious about improving physical health, mental wellbeing and education outcomes, we need to take play seriously.”
Outdoor play is a cornerstone of learning, health and wellbeing. It deserves a strategic approach that centres equity, accessibility, and creativity—not just in the early years, but throughout a child’s journey through school.
Recommendations from the report include:
• Conduct an annual review of outdoor play – Regularly assess how your outdoor spaces are used, identify what’s working well, and spot opportunities for improvement or investment.
• Champion inclusive equipment in funding bids and PTA projects.
• Prioritise flexible, multifunctional spaces over single-use installations.
It followed this year’s Playday with the theme highlighting the vital importance of quality spaces for play that support children and young people’s happiness, physical and emotional health and well-being, and connection to the world around them.
As Playday was celebrated across the UK, national play organisations called for more inclusive and welcoming spaces where children and young people of all ages and abilities can play freely and feel part of their communities.

Atholl Estates enhances grounds care with mower from Fairways GM
Atholl Estates in Pitlochry— home to the iconic Blair Castle and Gardens—has recently upgraded its grounds maintenance equipment with the addition of an ISEKI SF225 ride-on mower, supplied by Fairways GM in Kinross.
This investment supports the upkeep of the estate’s extensive and diverse landscapes.
Teal Standen, Gardens Projects Manager and Jim Hodge, Head Gardener at Atholl Estates, explained the reasoning behind the upgrade: “Our previous mower had reached the end of its serviceable life, and we faced a choice between costly repairs or replacement. We opted for the ISEKI SF225, which offers a more powerful Stage V-compliant engine, a wide cutting deck and a larger grass clipping collector.”
The mower will be primarily used at the 10-acre Blair Atholl Caravan Park but will also be deployed in the historic Hercules Garden and on the formal lawns leading to the castle.
“These areas present a mix of terrain and mowing requirements. At the caravan park, we have large areas which require self-mulching and elsewhere, various garden grounds which demand different cutting heights. The SF225’s front deck allows a clear vision before we mow—ideal for tight spots and sensitive landscaping—and its large collector is a real asset.”
Fairways GM’s Area Sales Manager, Mike Lindsay, provided support throughout the sales process and installation.

Built for every season - the ISEKI TG6495
At Blundell’s School in Devon, 120 acres of sports pitches, landscaped parkland, and campus grounds demand machinery that is powerful, versatile, and dependable. For Head Groundsman Josh Allen, the ISEKI TG6495 50hp tractor has become the workhorse at the centre of the operation.
“The TG6495s really are the backbone of what we do,” explains Josh. “We’ve had them for five years now, and they’ve been reliable, trustworthy, and always ready when we need them. In a school environment, that kind of performance really matters because there’s no margin for downtime.”
Both of the school’s TG6495s are fitted with ISEKI’s IQ
gearbox, delivering smooth, clutchless shifting that makes operation efficient and intuitive. For turf maintenance, the transmission’s auto-PTO function is a stand-out feature.
“On the sports side, lifting the arms and having the PTO shut off and restart automatically is a feature that works smoothly every time,” says Josh.
One tractor is equipped with a front loader, tackling campus landscaping duties such as moving aggregates, mulch, and topsoil. The other is dedicated to sports turf, handling demanding tasks from towing a wide batwing mower to running aeration and scarification equipment.

Terram delivers sustainable car park upgrade
A major refurbishment of the car parking facilities at a renowned historic estate in Stratford-uponAvon has been successfully completed using Terram Bodpave 40, a high-strength, sustainable surface solution made from 100% recycled materials.
As part of broader visitor enhancement works carried out in 2022, the Grade-listed Tudor estate, set within 180 acres of landscaped deer park, required a significant upgrade to its previously unsurfaced car parks.
The project aimed to deliver a durable, all-weather parking surface capable of supporting
increasing visitor numbers while remaining sensitive to the estate’s historic character and surrounding environment.
Before the refurbishment, the estate’s gravel car parks were increasingly unable to cope with the rising visitor traffic and seasonal weather conditions.
During wetter months, surface erosion, standing water and reduced parking capacity created both operational inefficiencies and safety concerns, particularly during peak times.

The Ice Cream Farm celebrates 10 years with new attraction
Cheshire’s award-winning family attraction, The Ice Cream Farm, is marking ten years with a significant new investment: The Ice Cream Fields.
The all-weather, outdoor play area is the single biggest change to the Tattenhall business since its £5m redevelopment in 2015.
Set to be The Ice Cream Farm’s best value attraction, The Ice Cream Fields is designed with inclusivity in mind and to enhance the visitor experience, whilst also helping to manage footfall during busy peak periods. “We kicked off our tenth year by
receiving an Autism Friendly Award, and were then named Cheshire’s best large visitor attraction of 2025” said CEO and owner Jonathan Fell.
“Now with the opening of The Ice Cream Fields, I feel so proud of what the team has achieved in our milestone year, and excited for what this all means for the future of The Ice Cream Farm.”
To design the new attraction, The Ice Cream Farm called in Jupiter Play & Leisure – one of the original contractors for the 2015 redevelopment who helped to create outdoor play area, Daisy’s Garden.
Jupiter’s designers were given a detailed brief outlining Jonathan’s vision for the space. They were tasked with creating an all-weather, secure, outdoor play attraction that incorporated The Ice Cream Farm’s signature physical play equipment; designed to be inclusive for all children; featuring sensory elements; and to cater for a broad age range.
Collaborating closely with Jonathan, Jupiter’s designers worked to bring his vision to life, striving to create something truly unique.

MEDITE SMARTPLY champions creativity and social impact
MEDITE SMARTPLY, the leading manufacturer of sustainable wood-based panels, proudly supported two celebrated gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2025, highlighting the power of innovative materials in transformative landscape design.
Demonstrating the versatility, durability and aesthetic appeal of its panels, MEDITE SMARTPLY collaborated on the Gold Medalwinning Glasshouse Garden and the Silver Gilt Medal-winning Hospitalfield Arts Garden.
These installations showcased the use of SMARTPLY SITEPROTECT, MEDITE TRIMAX and MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME across
bespoke architectural and design features.
Key MEDITE SMARTPLY materials used include SMARTPLY SITEPROTECT for boundary screening, coated in bespoke Dulux colours, and MEDITE TRIMAX for the functional storage structure. These products were selected for their superior visual appeal, excellent weather resistance and suitability for premium exterior applications.
“We’re immensely proud to contribute to a garden that not only delivers visual impact but offers a long-term legacy rooted in rehabilitation and opportunity,” said John Harrup, Head of Marketing at MEDITE SMARTPLY. “This

Problem pool saved by Otterbine
Otterbine’s Fractional aerating fountain has transformed what was once a problem pool at Derwen Mill Holiday Park in Powys, Wales.
Owner Richard Jones explains how the five-star family-owned park prides itself on creating a peaceful, tranquil escape with its privatelyowned holiday homes set on spacious pitches, wrapped around lakes and pools, or overlooking large greens spaces.
It therefore stands to reason that its pool experiencing problems urgently needed a reliable and effective water solution.
Richard says: “We’ve got four thriving pools but the fifth really struggles due to its location at the lowest point on the park. It suffers with Canadian pond weed and floating algae and it’s difficult to maintain. We often joke about how it just doesn’t like being a pond!”
The park has had an Otterbine fountain in the past and it met expectations, therefore, there was “no reason not to get another” Richard says.
Richard researched the best options and found the Fractional met his criteria. This was an opinion shared by Matt Gilks from MG Turf who Richard contacted to supply the product.
The Fractional is an all-in-one fountain and circulator meaning it introduces oxygen into the water column for the most natural solution to water quality management, effectively controlling algae and aquatic weeds while creating impressive displays.
With decades of experience in all areas of irrigation installation, construction, supply and support, MG Turf
“Seeing MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME integrated so seamlessly into such an expressive and dynamic garden was truly inspiring,” added Harrup. “Its specification here demonstrates how sustainable materials can enable bold design while meeting performance expectations.”
Designed for long-lasting performance in challenging environments, MEDITE SMARTPLY products offer a sustainable and visually compelling alternative to conventional materials like concrete, plastics or metal.

was well placed to support the project from all angles.
Richard says: “It’s been a great experience working with Matt Gilks from MG Turf. He didn’t just help with recommending and supplying the Otterbine aerator, he helped us with a working management plan too, so I feel confident we have a long-lasting, sustainable solution in place.”
Matt comments: “Richard was keen to see a unit installed in the lake to make it a feature as much as giving it working purpose. Otterbine was a great solution for this. It was a pleasure to deal with Richard – we communicated about getting on site and arranged to install the unit over a bank holiday.”

Unlocking highways maintenance funds for councils
The introduction of an improved British Standard guidance document can offer local councils a solution for tackling the highways maintenance backlog, says Brett Landscaping.
The publication of BS 7533102 could hold the key to highways repair regimes for local councils over the next decade, as councils must publish annual reports on road maintenance progress.
It has been estimated that local authorities require £16.8bn to bring the road network up to existing ‘ideal’ conditions, with
52% of the UK road network under local council control having less than 15 years structural life remaining. This is more than 106,000 miles of road across the UK.
Brett Landscaping is advising that alongside the update of BS 7533-13: 2009 “Guide for the design of permeable pavements constructed with concrete paving blocks and flags, natural stone slabs and setts and clay pavers” Local Authorities have been provided with practical solutions for the surface layers for adoptable estate roads which dramatically reduces the risk of potholing.
The use of CBPP and other modular paving systems over less robust systems offers greater surface water management. They act as a source control if water can infiltrate back to ground, they can attenuate the surface water discharge, as well as clean the water and discharge at a controlled rate once a storm event has passed.
CBPP pavements have the ability to replicate the natural environment by absorbing a 5mm rainfall event with no discharge from the system and cleaning the surface water flow via their two levels of water treatment.
Improvement works at Merstham Recreation Ground complete
Blakedown Landscapes has completed a major £2.5m transformation at Merstham Recreation Ground in Redhill, delivered for Reigate & Banstead Borough Council in close collaboration with landscape architects Turkington Martin.
Part of the Council’s wider commitment to enhancing community infrastructure and public green spaces, the project has redeveloped the park into a highquality, inclusive and futureproofed space.
Shaped by community priorities and consultation with local residents and schoolchildren, the design supports wellbeing, biodiversity and year-round community use.
The scheme creates a new community hub, with a pavilion housing a café kiosk, toilets and changing rooms, a fully accessible play area with PiPA Gold accreditation, outdoor gym, parkour course, and refurbished MUGA and tennis courts.
The wider site improvements include an upgraded footpath network, extensive new planting, and a sustainable drainage strategy incorporating swales and enhancements to the existing watercourse.
These features help manage surface water on site and deliver measurable ecological value.

Chelmsford City Racecourse’s fresh new look
As the summer season approaches, Chelmsford City Racecourse, a prominent venue in Essex renowned for its vibrant racing events, has recently unveiled a major enhancement to its grounds with the installation of a highperformance fencing solution from Jacksons Fencing.
Designed to boost both the safety and aesthetic appeal, the upgrade arrived just in time for one of the venue’s busiest periods.
To meet the challenge, Chelmsford City Racecourse teamed up with Garden Fencing Essex, an Approved Installer of Jacksons Fencing, to deliver a fencing solution that seamlessly balanced robust security with open, welcoming aesthetics,
which is critical for a venue that hosts thousands of spectators at peak events.
The racecourse required a fencing system that could serve two functions: low-level demarcation to separate general areas without compromising the open atmosphere, and secure fencing to protect restricted zones and sensitive equipment.
After careful consideration, the EuroGuard Flatform mesh fencing system was selected for its clean, unobtrusive design and superior performance.
Comprising 656 twin wire mesh panels, featuring 6mm horizontal wires sandwiching a 5mm vertical wire, the system offers exceptional rigidity and longevity, perfectly suited for a bustling venue.
Fully electric Fendt e100 Vario launched
Following the successful launch of the Fendt e100 V Vario in Europe in 2024, Fendt has added the new e100 Vario tractor to its offering in the UK & Ireland.
The Fendt e100 Vario is available in two variants, an e107 V, specifically for operation in narrow environments such as vineyards and orchards, and the e-100 S.
Using the same battery unit as the e107 V, the Fendt e100 S Vario has been designed for the utility, amenity and groundscare sectors.
“The Fendt e107 S and V Vario will be available to order from autumn 2025 and is being produced at the Marktoberdorf tractor plant,” explains Fendt’s Ed Dennett. “Both the new e100 S and e107 V are supported and serviced by the Fendt dealer network, with trained technicians able to help introduce farmers and growers to the technology and help them reap the full benefit of these innovative machines.”
The Fendt e107 V Vario model has an external width from 1.07 metres and a height of approx. 2.45 metres. The new e100 S Vario is wider, at 2.16 metres, and higher at 2.64 metres with standard tyres, making it closer in size to the diesel powered Fendt 200 Vario. There are two specifications for the e100 Vario including Profi and Profi+.
The drive train of the Fendt e100 S Vario is shared with the smaller e107 V, and includes a battery with an electric motor and Fendt’s Vario transmission which works in three driving modes. The maximum power range according to ECE R85 is 50 kW (68 hp) in Eco mode. In Dynamic mode, up to 55 kW (75 hp) is available and, as peak drive power, the machine provides up to 66 kW (90 hp) for short periods in Dynamic+ mode and offers a maximum torque of 347 Nm.
The Fendt e100 S Vario can be optionally equipped ex works with the Fendt Cargo 3X65 front loader. The design of the Fendt comfort cab is optimised for use with a front loader, with a roof window that offers the best view with a 100° viewing angle. This facilitates front loader work at height, such as storing bales.
In line with the automotive standard, the Fendt e100 models are equipped with a CCS2 socket and is compatible with standard wall outlets or public charging points. Ready for future developments, DC fast charging with up to 80 kW charging power is possible via a CCS socket.
Fendt also offers a mobile 22 kW quick-charging cable set, including a wall bracket via the AGCO Parts division.

To meet the varied security and layout need of Chelmsford City Racecourse, two distinct fencing heights were installed as part of the project. 1.2 metre EuroGuard Flatform mesh fencing was used for low-level demarcation across public-facing areas of the venue. This height is ideal for subtly guiding foot traffic and separating zones, such as walkways or seating areas, without disrupting the openness of the racecourse. The fencing ensures a clear visual boundary while maintaining an inviting and accessible environment for visitors.
In more sensitive areas, 1.8 metre high EuroGuard Flatform mesh panels were installed to provide enhanced security and access control. These taller panels are used to protect staff
zones and essential equipment, acting against unauthorised entry. This increased height offers peace of mind for racecourse management and staff, ensuring that restricted areas remain secure without compromising the venue’s aesthetic continuity.
The fencing is finished in a green powder coating which complements the natural surroundings of the racecourse,
while also providing enhanced resistance to weathering and corrosion. The tamper-proof fixings ensure the fencing remains secure, even in high-traffic environments.
In addition to the fencing, a matching double leaf gate was installed to facilitate vehicle access while maintaining a cohesive visual identity. Constructed to the same high standards, this gate ensures smooth logistics for maintenance and events.
Sustainability was a key factor in this project. The EuroGuard Flatform mesh system is built from premium steel wire and comes with by Jacksons Fencing’s 25-year guarantee. This long-term durability reduces the environmental impact and provides significant savings on maintenance and replacements.

Leading manufacturer of total ground-line barrier sleeves, Postsaver, is proud to announce outstanding results following a 25-year fi eld test conducted by the BRE (Building Research Establishment), Europe’s largest independent timber testing organisation.
Using the rigorous methodology outlined in EN252:2014the European Standard for evaluating the effectiveness of wood preservatives in ground contact – researchers found that Postsaver’s dual-layer ground-line barrier sleeves, when used with a mild dip preservative treatment, showed zero failures after nearly 25 years of continuous in-ground exposure—proving to be a highly effective solution for long-term timber protection.
“This is a major milestone for us,” said Richard George, CEO of Postsaver. “To see our product perform so well under long-term, independent scrutiny validates everything we’ve worked toward. It proves that
the combination of preservative protection and a total barrier sleeve signifi cantly increases the life of timber products used in ground contact whilst reducing the environmental impact of fencing.
“We believe these findings will help open new doors for collaboration within the wood protection industry and inspire greater confidence in wood as a long-lasting, sustainable construction material. As alternative post and pole materials continue to gain market share in all the markets we operate in, it’s crucial we offer the assurance of durability as well as promoting the environmental benefi ts to ensure that wood remains the material of choice for a range of applications including, fencing, fruit supports and utility poles”.
The BRE used its Notional Mean Decay Rating (NMDR) system—a visual inspection methodology defined in EN252—to assess performance. Postsaver’s
protected stakes achieved superior results. All test stakes have since been returned to the field for possible future monitoring, further underlining Postsaver’s commitment to ongoing product verification.
For over 30 years, Postsaver has delivered proven, environmentally conscious solutions that maximise the lifespan of wood in ground contact.
The company’s Pro-Wrap and Pro-Sleeve products come with a 20-year post replacement guarantee, while its longer ProWrap +PLUS barrier sleeve offers 40 years post replacement guarantee at similar cost to creosote treated posts.
The company’s heavy duty Polesaver sleeves are used in over 35 countries to provide protection to utility poles used in critical power distribution and telecom networks.

Club underway with ‘summer
Wiedenmann phase’
Hamilton Golf Club has entered what Course Manager Neil Hogg calls its “summer Wiedenmann phase” — when its fleet of specialist turf care machines is fine-tuned for summer maintenance.
Neil joined the Lanarkshire club in December 2022 from Bruntsfield Links GC in Edinburgh, inheriting three key Wiedenmann machines: a Terra Spike GXi8, a Super 500, and a Core Recycler.
Since then, the fleet has grown through Fairways GM, Wiedenmann’s exclusive Scottish dealer, with a Terra Spike XP in summer 2023, a Mega Twister
Redexim
blower in summer 2024, and most recently a 2.3m Terra Rake in October 2024.
While many clubs use this machinery mainly in autumn and winter, Neil keeps it working year-round.
Neil says performance is the priority, with improved appearance a welcome bonus.
“It’s about long-term improvement as much as presentation,” says Neil. “Better airflow, better recovery, and ultimately, a better playing surface.”

Verti-Drain powers performance
With a demanding sports schedule and a heavy clay soil profile, aeration at Bedford School is not a luxury – it’s a necessity.
That’s why Head Groundsman George Mills wasted no time in bringing in a Redexim Verti-Drain 2519 when he joined the team just over a year ago.
The Verti-Drain 2519 has quickly become one of the most reliedupon machines in the school’s
fleet. It’s now in near-constant use throughout the winter season – from October through to March – helping to relieve compaction, encourage drainage, and support healthier root growth across the school’s extensive grounds.
“It’s an absolutely essential part of our maintenance programme,” George says. “The biggest difference is how much ground we can now cover in such a short space of time. With the 2519’s speed, in
theory we could aerate the entire site in under a week. Of course, in practice we’ve got plenty of other work going on, but that capability makes a huge difference to us.”
Built for performance without compromising on manoeuvrability, the Verti-Drain 2519 is ideally suited to sensitive areas such as sports pitches, tees, and greens. Despite its compact design, it offers deep aeration down to 10 inches (25 cm) and can be run on lower
horsepower tractors – an advantage George is keen to highlight.
What sets the Verti-Drain 2519 apart is its working speed. The build quality and user experience have also impressed.
The machine accepts a wide variety of tine options, giving George the flexibility to adapt throughout the season.

The power of botanical balance
Four heatwaves, rainfall 40% below the average and soaring evapotranspiration have left reservoirs low and much of England officially in drought.
For turf managers, this isn’t a one-off challenge — it’s the new pattern. Fairways, in particular, have taken a hit with heavy traffic and hydrophobic ‘dry patch’ soils slowing recovery and reducing the overseeding window.
Beneath the surface, next season’s outcomes are already being decided so what can you do create surfaces than not only survive, but thrive?
Stuart Yarwood, Regional Technical Manager at DLF Seeds, said: “Resilience isn’t about one species — it’s about balance. Each grass brings unique strengths and, when blended intelligently, they create swards that can survive drought, recover faster and maintain presentation.
“The deep roots and rolled leaves of Fescues provide natural drought tolerance. Slender & Strong Creeping Red deliver rhizomatous recovery, Chewings provides
fineness and root mass while Hard and Sheep’s add density on poorer soils. The creeping roots of Bents provide stability, boost drought recovery and wear tolerance, all with low inputs. Ultrafine Ryegrasses provide rapid establishment and resilience to traffic, ideal for situations where fast cover is critical.
“Botanical diversity is an insurance policy: if one species falters, others fill the gap. This strategy forms the backbone of mixture formulation, with each Johnsons Sports Seed and Masterline mix from DLF a carefully tuned orchestra of grasses working in harmony to protect your surfaces from whatever the climate throws next.
“This year has been brutal, but intelligent overseeding is your defence. Combine botanical diversity, cultural best practice and DLF’s unrivalled seed purity to future-proof your fairways. Overseeding isn’t just repair — it’s an investment in resilience, playability and sustainability.”

Kress rethink turf management for a sustainable future
Sustainability is no longer a side consideration for golf courses and large turf facilities—it’s becoming a central priority.
Rising energy costs, increasing environmental regulations, and growing expectations from players and communities are all shaping how greenkeepers manage their landscapes. One technology attracting attention is the Kress RTKn robotic mower, which combines automation with zero emissions.
Unlike traditional petrol-powered equipment, the RTKn runs quietly and without exhaust fumes, helping courses significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Estimates suggest
that an 18-hole golf course could lower emissions by as much as 10 tons annually by making the switch.
Performance is a crucial factor in turf care, and these robotic mowers are designed to operate reliably in varied conditions, including wet weather. This flexibility ensures consistent results even during periods of rapid grass growth.
The benefits extend beyond efficiency. With near-silent operation, mowing can take place at times that would be disruptive with conventional machinery— early in the morning, during play, or overnight. Automation also reduces staff exposure to machinery risks, adding a layer of workplace safety.
Effortless green space management with Upson
Finding the right tools to manage outdoor spaces efficiently is essential.
The Foxwood T120 Chipper is a game-changer for green space management teams, delivering a highly effective solution.
The Foxwood T120 and T90 are designed for towing behind small utility vehicles, giving you access to remote areas, particularly during winter months when wet conditions can complicate maintenance tasks.
With its lightweight structure and flotation tyres, the T120 cruises over fine turf, even wet, boggy areas, without leaving a mark, ensuring you can tackle your projects all year round.
The adjustable drawbar height further enhances the T120’s versatility, allowing it to be
effortlessly paired with almost any vehicle.
With a chipping capacity of up to 5 inches, the Foxwood T120 can easily handle most branches, turning them into valuable mulch for walkways and beds.
Because it has no feed rollers It is not a legal requirement to obtain a wood chipper license to operate this machine in the UK, making it accessible for everyone.
What sets the T120 apart from traditional PTO chippers is its one-man operation. Users can harvest wood chips directly into the buck of their ATV, streamlining the entire process and eliminating the need for multiple vehicles or additional manpower.
Upson Enquiry 46
Perhaps most importantly, the RTKn supports healthier turf. Regular, gentle cutting promotes denser grass growth, while early-morning operation can reduce soil compaction and
manage challenges like worm casts and mole activity.
For greenkeepers balancing sustainability, playability, and cost control, robotic mowing
represents a forward-looking option. Kress RTKn technology may not only help reduce emissions but also provide longterm operational savings and improved turf resilience—an
investment in the future of the game as much as the grounds it is played on.

SVR 1500 proves vital for synthetic surface strategy
Stoke City FC’s long-standing Grounds Manager, Andy Jackson, believes that synthetic pitches demand more attention than people might expect – and that’s exactly why the Syn-Pro by SISIS SVR 1500 has become an essential part of his maintenance regime at the training ground.
“We carry out around eight to ten hours of maintenance work each week on our synthetic pitch,” says Andy, who has been with the club for over 30 years. “People forget that synthetic pitches require a lot more maintenance than they think. But if you stay on top of it and do it properly, it can make a huge difference to the longevity and quality of the surface.”
The SVR 1500 – a twoin-one deep cleaning and decompaction machine – plays a central role in that strategy. Part of Syn-Pro by SISIS range, the SVR 1500 has been in regular use at Stoke’s training ground for the past two years, and Andy has been thoroughly impressed.
“We wanted a machine that was robust, simple to use and gives us the quality finish that we require. The SVR 1500 cleans the surface, distributes the rubber evenly, and leaves a good finish.”
Used primarily in the spring and summer months when conditions are dry, the SVR

Campey Universe rotor approved for SIS grass renovations
The Campey Universe rotor from Campey Turf Care Systems has become a featured and approved method of SIS Grass renovation by SIS Pitches, which is the world’s leading provider of stitched hybrid pitches.
This rotor is equipped with specially designed tungsten-tipped blades that are strategically spaced to remove organic matter, thatch, and surface debris with precision.
To get the best consistency and longevity from the system, SIS Pitches has constantly researched ways to keep it at its best, with the Campey Universe Rotor fitted to the Koro FIELDTOP MAKER (FTM) playing a leading role.
Extensive time and research have gone into the finessing of the Campey Universe rotor for use on hybrid systems, with it now being used worldwide by contractors and end-users to ensure the quality of their pitches.
It is an exceptional tool for maintaining and rejuvenating hybrid pitches, combining precision and efficiency to meet the unique demands of these innovative playing surfaces. SIS Grass, a blend of 95% natural grass and synthetic fibres, require specialised care to ensure optimal performance, durability, and player safety.
As an attachment to the Koro FTM, the Campey Universe Rotor offers the perfect solution for targeted surface management without damaging the synthetic components of hybrid systems.
When used on hybrid pitches, it effectively addresses the accumulation of organic material, which can compromise drainage and stability if left untreated. By operating at adjustable depths, the rotor can delicately remove unwanted material without disturbing the synthetic fibres or the underlying structure of the hybrid system.
One of the significant advantages of using the Campey Universe rotor on hybrid pitches is its ability to preserve the natural grass while enhancing the interface between the natural and synthetic components. The process improves aeration and drainage, which encourages healthy grass growth by creating an ideal environment for root development.
Additionally, it facilitates a clean and even surface, preparing the pitch for essential follow-up treatments such as overseeding or topdressing. These procedures are critical for hybrid pitches, as they rely on consistent and sustainable natural grass cover to complement the synthetic elements.

Trilo proves multipurpose in name and nature
A Trilo Multipurpose is proving to be exactly that, by name and by nature, for the team at Highfield and Brookham School.
Delivered in February 2025, the M3 was brought in to replace an existing Trilo S3 vacuum sweeper enabling Grounds Manager Jasper Marks and the team to not only conduct leaf clearance, but also scarification and cut and collect tasks around the 500 acres of school grounds and estate.
He explains, “The S3 was a fantastic machine, robust and efficient, which would be used for leaf collection, road sweeping and general clearance of clippings and debris over the autumn and winter months.
“I then discovered the Multipurpose M3, which was capable of doing everything the S3 could, with the addition of
flail and scarifying shafts to cut or scarify and collect all with one unit. It’s transformed the Trilo into a machine that we can fully utilise all year round.”
While only a matter of months since the M3 was installed by dealers Lister Wilder and Trilo’s Jeremy Vincent, it is already demonstrating its key trait –versatility: “We have a 9-hole golf course on the estate where the Trilo has been used to assist with cut and collect of the roughs. The large 3m3 hopper means we can cut for longer without having to make as many trips to our green waste area to empty. It’s keeping us productive, for longer.
“After that, we equipped it with the scarifier shaft for use on our sports pitches. We previously hired a machine for this which often meant we were scarifying in less than idea conditions. Now
we can do it ourselves whenever the weather or play schedule allows which will bring huge improvements to pitch quality.”
“What also really impressed me was the service we received from Jeremy. While the machine, in principle, is not wildly different from the S3 we were using before, no corners were cut with the handover & installation to ensure the team were confident and would get the very best out of the machine.”
“We traded in one machine and gained three in return, but needed to find no extra space in the shed as the footprint is near enough identical” he added.
“It’s going to become a pivotal part of the team as we continue to drive up standards for our students and wider community to enjoy.”
