A national mission to restore and improve the quality of Britain’s parks and green spaces could help restore trust in government at a moment when confidence in politics is disintegrating, according to new research by public opinion research agency and thinktank More in Common.

The report finds the proportion of Britons who believe the Labour Government will improve their lives has halved from 54 per cent immediately after the General Election to just 27 per cent now.

Only half (57 per cent) of 2024 Labour voters expect the government to improve their lives. Labour is retaining just 34 per cent of these disillusioned voters. This collapse in confidence in the government’s ability to change voters lives’ for the better is driving voters to alternatives including Reform.

The report also finds that few Britons have faith in the Labour Government’s mission to restore

Fix the parks to prove you can fix the country, say voters Report warns of widespread drought in 2026

England will experience worse levels of drought next year if this winter is drier than normal, the Environment Agency has warned.

The environmental regulator has released its Drought Prospects Report, examining the wet weather needed through the winter to ensure the country’s current low water levels recover by spring 2026.

Despite recent rainfall, the drought situation across the country is still precarious following a record dry spring and a continued run of heatwaves and dry weather throughout the summer.

The new report analyses three different rainfall scenarios over winter and what each one

pride in place in Britain - only a quarter (26 per cent) of Britons expect the government to help improve their local communities.

The report finds that parks and green spaces are Britons’ largest source of pride in their local communities. This is true for voters from across the political spectrum including Reform UK voters. The research finds that Britons, across the political spectrum, think the mental health boost they bring is the most important benefit of having access to green spaces.

The report finds overwhelming support for a full suite of potential policies to improve Britons’ access to green spaces.

Report author Chris Annous, Associate at More in Common, said: “Britons voted for change at the last election, but do not feel the Labour Government is delivering this.

“If they are to retain power at the next General Election, Labour must

change that and restoring pride in Britain’s communities will be crucial to achieving this.

“Demonstrating tangible improvements to Britons’ lives and communities in the next three and a half years will be tough, particularly on the more structural challenges Britain faces around the NHS, cost of living and immigration.

“Parks and green spaces represent low-hanging political fruit - meaningful improvements which Britons will notice and appreciate, and can be delivered with minimal resources.

“Delivering these upgrades won’t just be good in their own rightimproving parks and green spaces holds more potential to restore confidence in the government’s ability to make Britons’ lives better and win votes at the ballot box than politicians seem to realise.”

would mean for water security across England’s regions ahead of next year’s traditionally drier months. Without average rainfall, most of England will experience a drought with widespread impacts felt by consumers, farmers, businesses, and nature.

Director of Water at the Environment Agency, Helen Wakeham, said: “There will be a drought next year, unless we get sustained rainfall through the winter.

“The severity of that drought will depend both on the weather and the actions we take over winter following this very dry year.”

Water Minister Emma Hardy welcome the recent rainfall but

added the prolonged dry weather throughout this year continues to pose risks water supplies.

“We continue to work with the National Drought Group and water companies to maintain supplies for communities

across the country,” the minister added.

“Climate change means we will face more frequent, severe droughts and flooding in the years ahead. That’s why this government is taking decisive

action to secure our longterm water resilience, which includes building nine new reservoirs and investing in new pipes to reduce leakage.”

It has been another landmark year for the wider industry for a whole set of reasons.

More challenges have been set before us and more obstacles have needed to be negotiated, but despite this 2025 has undoubtedly been a successful year.

As this magazine celebrates its 30th anniversary – more on that in our special supplement – we have once again seen 12 months of hard work, innovation, fun and above all an industry that makes an invaluable contribution to the economy and local communities day in and day out.

Some of this positive power is finally being recognised once again by Government, but there is still a lack of awareness about just how important the industry – and each of the sectors within it – is to the UK.

Since our last issue we have gathered at NEC Birmingham for SALTEX and are now making preparations for the next instalment of BIGGA’s flagship event, BTME 2026 in January.

This month, along with our anniversary special, we have a very mixed set of features and product showcases.

There is a review of SALTEX and a preview of BTME, with more on that to come in January’s issue. There is also a special spotlight on Hedge & Verge Mowing from Jane Carley as she looks at some significant new product launches.

We take a look at the urban environment with a look at Hard & Soft Landscaping, as well as our usual mixture of product-focused news, case studies and launches from across the industry, including groundscare and the play and activity sector.

It is a very busy month to round off what has been a very busy 12 months.

As we celebrate our 30th birthday, the whole team at TSP Media would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Have a good month everyone.

API welcomes Government investment in playgrounds

The Association of Play Industries (API) welcomes the Chancellor’s announcement of an £18 million investment in playgrounds across the UK.

This funding represents a timely opportunity to reverse the long-term decline in local play provision and restore highquality spaces that support children’s physical, social and emotional development.

To ensure this investment delivers lasting value for communities, the API urges local authorities to commission only reputable, accountable, and financially robust suppliers. API members are independently vetted and adhere to strict professional standards designed to safeguard both public money and children’s safety.

Key benefits of commissioning an API member include:

• Financial safeguards

• Each API member undergoes checks on financial viability. Guarantees and warranties are only meaningful if the company remains solvent; our vetting process reduces the risk of councils being left with costly problems when a supplier folds.

• Industry-leading Code of Conduct

• All members commit to a Code of Conduct covering safety, quality, transparency, and professional practice. This gives councils confidence that installations will meet high standards and that ethical behaviour is nonnegotiable.

• Free mediation service

On the rare occasions that an issue arises, the API provides an independent, free mediation service

for customers of API members. This protects councils and ensures concerns are resolved quickly and fairly without additional cost.

With significant public funds now earmarked for new and improved play spaces, it is critical that procurement decisions prioritise quality, accountability, and longterm value. By working with API-accredited companies, local authorities can be confident that playgrounds will be safe, durable, and delivered by organisations committed to best practice.

Dr Amanda Gummer, Chair of the Association of Play Industries explains “£18 million is a welcome and much-needed investment in children’s play, but the impact of this funding will depend entirely on the quality of the spaces it creates.

“Poor workmanship and short-term fixes end up costing councils far more in the long run. By choosing

API members, local authorities can be confident they are working with financially sound companies that meet rigorous professional standards and are committed to long-term community benefit.

“Our members are held to a strict Code of Conduct, and we back this with a free mediation service to give councils additional reassurance. This is a real opportunity to get play provision right, and we want to see

Forestry England unveils new resilience strategy

Forestry England is launching a new strategy and action plan which will protect the nation’s forests against the multiple threats they face.

Three key principles of assessing, diversifying and restoring will guide foresters across the organisation so the 1,500 forests and woodlands in their care are fit for the future.

As the combined effects of the climate crisis, biodiversity collapse, and tree pests and diseases put the nation’s forests at ever greater risk, the scienceled strategy sets out a bold approach to forest management.

Built on decades of experience across Forestry England,

the strategy brings together innovative work already underway on nature recovery, timber production and silviculture. It outlines three key principles which will guide action across the organisation so the nation’s forests can be more productive, withstand disturbance, and give greater value to society.

Dr Eleanor Tew, Forestry England Head of Forest Planning, said: “Every aspect of our work depends on healthy forests and without them we lose everything. The value of the nation’s forests is enormous. They are beautiful, inspiring places for millions of people to enjoy; provide critical homes for wildlife; and they supply high-

quality, sustainable timber. We all depend on these benefits, so forest resilience is our single, biggest challenge.

“Each forest and woodland in our care is a complex, interconnected ecosystem, and every part needs to thrive. Our resilience strategy reflects this interdependence, setting out how teams’ work right across our organisation will focus on forest resilience. We’ve based it on the best available science and years of experience and innovation. With this approach, we can give the nation’s forests the best chance to adapt and thrive in the centuries ahead.”

Green-tech aids increase in biodiversity and water management

As Scotland’s eighth newest city (2022), Dunfermline has seen investment in new residential developments.

As part of the Dunfermline Eastern Expansion, Taylor Wimpey have built around a hundred homes.

Although Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is not mandatory in Scotland just yet, the National Planning Framework 4 (NPF4), focuses on ‘significant biodiversity enhancements’ for major developments. And any urban greening, particularly street trees, plays a vital role.

Advance Construction (Scotland) have worked with Green-tech for over ten of those years across various projects and approached the company to price up 21 tree pits using the TreeParker tree pit support system.

Having been used in mainland Europe for the past twelve years or more, on high-profile projects such as the pavements around the Eiffel Tower, and Rotterdam’s main boulevard, Coolsingle, TreeParker works by supporting the paving above a tree pit, whether used for pedestrian or vehicular traffic. In doing this, it protects the soil within the tree pit from

becoming compacted. This enables the landscaper to use a soft, friable, organic topsoil for the tree to grow in, rather than having to make do with a less organic, structural tree sand.

Unlike similar systems, it has several distinct advantages. The heavy-duty, reinforced legs are available in six height options from the factory: 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, and 1500mm. This gives a previously unheard-of adaptability with depth options. From a contractor’s point of view, it means there is never any need to stack two units to achieve a depth over 600mm, saving installation time and money.

The other major advantage is that there are no side walls to get in the way of utilities, new or existing. By having smooth, rounded legs rather than side walls, the units can easily straddle or work around service pipes and lines.

Each TreeParker tree pits have Mona Relief irrigation rings and cast aluminium filler caps, as well as underground anchor systems. With it being vital to the health of any tree or planting scheme, Greentech delivered a total of 260 tonnes of Green-tree British Standard subsoil and Geocell topsoil to site over a staggered period as required.

Future-proofed irrigation with Hunter

Bedford School’s cricket facilities have undergone a significant transformation following the installation of a fully automated Hunter irrigation system, supplied by KAR UK and installed by JK Irrigation.

The upgrade has not only boosted efficiency but also future-proofed

the grounds for continued development over the next decade.

At the heart of the new system is the Hunter ACC2 controller, complete with an internet module that gives Head Groundsman George Mills and his team full remote access. Each grounds team member is responsible for a different area,

and thanks to the Centralus platform, they can now manage their irrigation schedules from their phones, no matter where they are.

The system features Hunter G-800 TTS valve-in-head sprinklers around the main cricket squares and Hunter I-25 sprinklers for the smaller areas. Two 25,000-litre

tanks water storage tanks and a Lowara pump system, controlled via an integrated unit, ensure powerful and consistent pressure - around seven bar - which is a dramatic improvement on the school’s previous setup.

Wiedenmann Super 600 leads way for rough management

There’s no question that the Wiedenmann Super 600 Trentham Golf Club, near Stokeon-Trent, purchased fifteen months ago is their most versatile piece of kit.

The Super 600 sits at the heart of the club’s maintenance programme, tackling three key annual operations across the course: rough management, scarifying, and leaf collection.

“Even if you were to offer task-specific machines, I’d still say the Super 600 is the best at scarifying, the best at rough management, and the best at leaf collection,” said Course Manager Ed Stant. “It’s so well engineered that I wouldn’t even think about a competitor.”

Trentham had run a Super 500 for ten years before upgrading. A Super 600 supplied by Wiedenmann dealer, Turner Groundscare, instantly brought increased capacity — a 4,500litre hopper compared with the previous 2,500 litres — and the new vigour of an upgraded model, with many of the options now standard.

Trentham has another piece of Wiedenmann kit — a Terra Spike GXi8 HD deep aerator. The championship course upgraded a 14-year-old XP6 for the new model around the same time as they bought the Super 600.

rises to the maintenance challenges

Hellidon Lakes Golf Club boasts 27-holes of challenging parkland play, a hotel and a range of other facilities.

Behind the pristine fairways and manicured greens is a small, dedicated maintenance team led by Golf Course Manager Gary Armstrong and an L2-622 and RTV-X1110 from Kubota.

A long-time Kubota user, Gary and his team have relied on the brand for both reliability and versatility. “I’ve worked with Kubota equipment for years so was pleased, when I

started here seven years ago, to find Kubota was already part of the fleet. Our Senior Management at Hellidon Lakes loves the Kubota brand and the equipment is also favoured at our other venue course in Shropshire.” Gary explains.

This year, Hellidon Lakes upgraded its fleet through local Kubota dealer George Browns, replacing their previous compact tractor which had served the club for over 20 years with a higherhorsepower L2-622 which was delivered in April 2025, alongside an RTV-X1110.

“The RTV-X1110 has been brilliant for moving materials and people around the site, with the added bonus of it being homologated for road use.”

Gary notes, “With hydrostatic transmission (HST), it’s slightly different to operate than our previous utility vehicle but feels better tailored to the needs of turf maintenance and the team have quickly and easily adapted to it, to get the most out of the RTV.”

The Kress Voyager – its product of the year

The landscaping industry has long wrestled with labour shortages, rising operational costs, and environmental pressures.

The Kress Voyager KR800 addresses these challenges head-on as an autonomous commercial mower built specifically for route-based landscaping operations. This isn’t just another robotic mower, it’s a business transformation tool that truly stands out.

What makes the the Kress Voyager exceptional is its sophisticated technology fusion. Combining RTK technology, LiDAR, VisionAI, and advanced sensors, it operates wire-free with centimetrelevel precision comparable to autonomous vehicles. After a single mapping session, it

remembers the properties and travels with a crew from site to site, eliminating the set-up hassles that plague other autonomous mowers.

The practical benefits are compelling. With its 40-inch cutting deck, the Voyager covers up to seven acres on a single charge and operates for eight hours straight. At speeds reaching 5.6 mph, it can even travel trailer-free between properties in dense neighbourhoods, making it genuinely practical for realworld commercial use.

Beyond productivity gains, the Voyager addresses multiple industry pain-points simultaneously. It reduces crew exposure to noise, fuel, and emissions while itself operating

emission-free. Crews can focus on detailed work and other skilled tasks while the Voyager handles repetitive mowing autonomously in the background.

Since 1966, Kress has specialized in quiet, electric innovation, perfecting zero-emission tools while competitors focused on petrol power. The Voyager represents the culmination of this heritage in a product that doesn’t just solve today’s problems, it reimagines tomorrow’s business model for professional landscapers. For an industry desperate for innovation, the Voyager delivers transformative value that few products can match.

Thirty years of innovation and collaboration

Tracing the history of Landscape & Amenity Product Update (LAPU) has been an illuminating experience and unsurprisingly it runs parallel with the development of the industry as a whole.

As a flagship, product-based publication of TSP Media’s portfol io of titles, LAPU has accurately traced the significant changes that have shaped the industry in the last 30 years and also previewed many of the innovations that have taken it in new and exciting directions.

The team at TSP Media is delighted to welcome you to our special anniversary supplement, which highlights many of the companies who have spearheaded change and innovation over the last two decades and more, as well as many of the industries bodies and trade organisations which have played an active role in improving the built environment in the UK and beyond.

We will highlight how product development has played a crucial role in making the industry leaner, more efficient, sustainable, future-proofed and above a ll better equipped to provide the developments and schemes the country needs.

LAPU has played its part in that progress. As a dynamic, multi- media and multi-channel publisher we have developed a set of information resources that still has the printed magazine at its heart but also offers a wide variety of professional and industry-leading options to do what we have always done best – get the right information to the right audience.

A week remains a long time in politics, but arguably with the a dvent of new technology literally changing the way we access information on a daily basis then 24 -hours can often be a lifetime in publishing. But TSP Media and LAPU continue to evolve and adapt , which is why celebrating 30 years at the leading edge of the industry is such a landmark wo rth celebrating.

The industry has undergone seismic change in recent years and w e continue to reflect that every month in the magazine and every day through our website.

In what is often regarded, quite wrongly as we all know, as a t raditional industry where change can take place in a glacial way, the dynamic nature of the prof essionals who work in it, the manufacturers who continually develop new products to serve it and the industry bodies that promote it are evident throughout each issue of LAPU and across the website.

New technology is shaping many industries, but when it comes ba ttery power and robotics some of the most significant and truly ground-breaking achievements are being made by companies wellknown to this industry. The industry has come a long way in the last three decades and LAPU has showcased that evolution – and in many cases revolution – every step of the way.

We will continue to act as a vital information resource for the industry and are already making plans for the next 30 years.

Thirty years of progress — the recent evolution of Dennis Mowers

For longer than any of us can remember, Dennis has been recognised for delivering high-quality, high-precision turf-care machinery trusted across elite sports venues.

The focus at Dennis has always been on providing grounds teams with versatile, reliable tools capable of producing a consistently professional finish, whether

maintaining cricket grounds, football and rugby pitches, bowling greens, or wider turf areas such as polo fields.

A major step in this journey came with the introduction of the G860 and FT ranges. These walk-behind mowers, built around the nowestablished interchangeable cassette system, gave turf professionals a level of flexibility that transformed

year-round maintenance. With the ability to switch seamlessly between mowing, verticutting, de-thatching, brushing, aeration and more, the G860 and FT ranges quickly became trusted favourites for delivering uniform, top-tier playing surfaces across multiple sports.

As expectations for sports turf performance increased, so did the commitment to refinement.

The cassette system broadened, engineering improved and the machines evolved to support even more precise and consistent surface preparation. Throughout this progress, our guiding principles remained unchanged: quality, reliability and unwavering attention to aftersales service.

In recent years, we have taken another significant step forward with the introduction of the E-Series, including the ES860 and ES-510/610. These battery-powered models carry

forward the proven strengths of the trusted petrol machines while introducing lower noise, reduced vibration and zero engine emissions. They provide the same versatility and finish quality expected from Dennis, supporting clubs and facilities aiming to achieve high standards with more sustainable working practices.

The latest Dennis brochure highlights this full evolution, from petrol machines to today’s advanced electric technology. It provides detailed product

insights, showcases UK-based manufacturing and reflects the commitment to professional results that has defined Dennis for over 100 years.

Across every development, the purpose remains constant: to support professional grounds teams with dependable, highperformance equipment that helps them deliver exceptional playing surfaces, whatever the sport and whatever the season.

Trimax Pegasus - built for big jobs, trusted for decades

As Landscaping and Amenity Product Update marks 30 years of serving the industry, it’s fitting to spotlight a machine that has come to represent the same values of longevity, reliability and continuous improvement.

For more than two decades, the Trimax Pegasus has remained a benchmark in large-area mowing — not because it has stayed the same, but because it has never stopped evolving.

When the first Pegasus rolled off the line in 2001, it reshaped expectations for wide-area mowing. Its trailed, multi-deck, fully foldable format combined productivity, transportability, and premium cut quality in a way grounds teams had never experienced. That original design philosophy — efficiency, reliability, and user-focussed design — has guided every generation since, evolving through ongoing dialogue with operators in the field.

From in-cab electric deck release to maintenance-free Steadfast spindles, wider cutting widths and a more robust transport system, each iteration has strengthened Pegasus’ reputation for durability and performance. Now in its fifth generation, the Pegasus S5 remains a trusted workhorse for contractors, schools,

estates, and local authorities alike. Features such as the Titan roller bearing system, automatic belt tensioning, and QuikLift as standard continue to reduce daily maintenance while enhancing ease of use and operator comfort.

But longevity in today’s industry isn’t just about durability — it’s about advancing with the needs of modern grounds management. And that’s where the latest Trimax innovation takes centre stage.

Launching at Saltex 2025, OptiAdjust brings a new level of precision, efficiency, and safety to the Pegasus platform. OptiAdjust allows operators to change mowing height between 10–80 mm without leaving the cab, using the intuitive Trimax Connect app. With adjustments made in seconds, downtime drops dramatically while consistency across changing ground conditions improves. For sports fields, municipal spaces, and large estates, the ability to finetune presentation on the move represents a genuine shift in operational flexibility.

Backed by the engineering expertise of Trimax, OptiAdjust integrates seamlessly with the Pegasus S5. It not only enhances efficiency but also supports turf health by making smaller, more

frequent height changes practical during peak growth periods — improving finish quality while reducing the risk of disease.

For many operators who have relied on the Pegasus for years,

Change mowing heights in seconds from the comfort of the cab with TRIMAX OPTIADJUST

these kinds of evolutions are exactly why the mower continues to stand apart. Its DNA remains unchanged: exceptional cut quality, reliability under pressure, and intelligent design shaped by real-world use. Yet

with each generation — and now with OptiAdjust — Pegasus continues to embrace smarter, safer, more productive operation.

As Landscaping and Amenity celebrates 30 years, Pegasus stands as proof that true longevity comes not from standing still, but from continually raising the standard.

Working smarter and maintaining professional standards

During the last three decades demand for high quality parks, green spaces and community areas has grown significantly.

Yet during that time, budgets for maintaining such spaces to a high quality standard have reduced year on year.

Working smarter to maintain these standards has become increasingly important with public sector bodies and contractors liaising closely with manufacturers to ensure products and services remain fit for purpose.

A survey on the state of local authority parks and greenspace services finds 85% of those

surveyed are expecting budgets cuts of at least 5%, with almost 30% expecting cuts of over 15%. This, despite the survey finding close to two-thirds of those surveyed are experiencing a growing number of visitors to their parks.

The survey, conducted annually by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE) and now in its thirteenth year, found that 83% of those surveyed said budget cuts have led to reduced levels of maintenance and increases in unmaintained land.

Mo Baines, APSE Chief Executive, said: “What the survey also shows is that local authorities are successfully introducing new

and innovative ways to sustainably manage parks. Whether this be through income generation, partnerships or alternative forms of funding, the most recent being the opportunities which may arise from Biodiversity Net Gain.

“It is hoped that central governments and other stakeholders will, in recognition of this innovation and best practice, provide the necessary support for local authorities and their parks managers in developing a sustainable future for the UK’s parks and the multitude of benefits they bring.”

At Blundell’s School in Devon, reliability isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. With 50 acres of sports pitches and an additional 70 acres of landscaped parkland and campus grounds to maintain year-round, the grounds team needs equipment that performs without fail.

That’s why, for the past five years, they’ve placed their trust in ISEKI UK and Ireland.

Their fleet now includes two TG6507 50hp tractors, a TXG sub-compact tractor, a TH5370 35hp tractor, and two SXG ride-on cut-andcollect mowers, each serving a distinct purpose across the

120-acre site, from fine turf management to heavy-duty renovation work.

“We’ve had our ISEKI fleet for five years now, and they’ve been reliable, trustworthy, and always ready when we need them,” says Head Groundsman Josh Allen.

“That kind of performance, year after year, really matters in a school environment where there’s no margin for downtime.”

Based in Tiverton, Blundell’s is a day and boarding school with around 650 pupils and a site rich in sporting heritage and formal presentation. The demands placed on machinery are high,

with frequent mowing, seasonal renovations, heavy towing, and tight working spaces. Yet, Josh and his team know their ISEKI tractors and mowers will handle it all.

The two TG6507 tractors, fitted with IQ gearboxes, form the backbone of the operation. One is fitted with a loader for garden work such as shifting mulch and aggregates, while the other supports the sports turf team with tasks like towing a batwing mower, vertidraining, and scarifying.

“The IQ gearbox is ideal for us,” Josh says. “When using the loader, the clutchless shuttle saves time and effort. On the sports

side, lifting the arms and having the PTO shut off, then restart automatically, is a feature that works smoothly every time.”

In five years, ISEKI’s reliability has been matched by its dealer support. Local dealer, ABA Groundcare, also in Tiverton, is a trusted partner. “ABA has been fantastic. Parts are easy to get, though we rarely need them, and the relationship, service, and support have all been spot on.”

The fleet has continued to grow, with the recent addition of a TH5370 35hp tractor for winter pitch maintenance and sprayer work, alongside a compact TXG sub-compact for dragmatting on

astro-turf pitches and light towing.

Two SXG ride-on mowers round out the lineup, used extensively for cut-and-collect work in formal areas and around buildings.

“The SXGs are brilliant during wet conditions,” adds Josh. “There are times we still need to mow even when it’s damp, and the SXGs don’t leave a mess or clippings behind. That’s important when you’re working around boarding houses and main entrances because the site still needs to look sharp regardless of the weather.

“It’s not just that the machines perform well, it’s that they keep doing it, year after year. In our line of

work, that’s the difference between being confident in your plan or constantly reacting to breakdowns. ISEKI gives us that confidence.”

At a school where presentation matters daily, reliability under pressure is key to upholding the grounds team’s standards. Whether maintaining turf or renovating pitches, the ISEKI fleet meets the challenge. For Blundell’s, five years of dependable service have built more than a machinery fleet; it’s built trust, and in any setting, that’s worth investing in.

The next generation of equipment is powering the future

As the industry continues to see a substantial growth in the use of electric and batterypowered machines, professional users can now benefit from the developments of machine and battery technology which are the future of the landscaping industry, offering them high performing e-power solutions without compromising on performance.

All the e-powered machinery offers the same high-

performance solutions whilst being much better for the environment and for working in noise sensitive areas such as schools and hospitals.

Nick Darking, General Manager of BAGMA, said:

“Looking specifically at groundcare, one of the biggest shifts we’re seeing is the use of robotic mowing systems for the likes of fairways and roughs.

“Not only do robotic mowers bring fantastic consistency to the more monotonous of maintenance tasks, they are battery operated – improving green credentials and reducing noise pollution for players and neighbours. Their lighter footprint also brings agronomic benefit to sports pitches, which appear to be slightly behind golf courses in the adoption of robotic mowing systems.

Kress, driving the future of battery power

Kress has spent nearly a century building the engineering expertise that now defines the new era of high-performance battery power.

From the company’s beginnings in 1928, its focus on electric innovation laid the foundation for a future where fossil fuels would no longer be needed in professional outdoor power equipment. With early advancements in electric motors and the major shift to cordless solutions, Kress positioned itself years ahead of an industry that is only now catching up.

That commitment has produced one of the biggest leaps forward

the sector has ever seen, the Kress 8-minute CyberSystem. This breakthrough set a global benchmark in charging speed, battery lifespan and power delivery, outperforming conventional lithium systems that overheat, lose efficiency and wear out far too quickly.

By designing its batteries from the ground up instead of using third party cells, Kress created a platform purpose built for commercial landscaping that stays cool under pressure and charges faster than it discharges.

Crucially, the long-term durability of the CyberPack

is transformative. Guaranteed for three thousand cycles, Kress batteries last far longer than typical lithium packs and are the only batteries capable of out-saving fossil fuel in both cost and longevity. This extended lifespan reduces the number of batteries a contractor needs over time, cutting resource consumption at the front end of manufacturing and dramatically lowering waste at the end of the cycle.

It fits perfectly with Kress’s wider sustainability commitments, reinforced by its Leed Platinum and WWF Platinum certifications.

“With the exception of the disposal issue – which is being assessed and addressed with speed by a number of specialist recycling firms – there’s not many downsides we see to embracing the helping hand technology can provide to any modern day land management.”

BAGMA Enquiry 26

Looking ahead, battery power is entering its most advanced era yet, and Kress is shaping that future. The brand is expanding its innovations across entire energy ecosystems, from portable power stations like CyberTank to modular systems such as

CyberCapsule and field ready DC and AC chargers.

These developments point toward a future where professionals can operate fully off grid with continuous, high performance battery power that eclipses petrol in every meaningful way. For commercial landscapers seeking the next generation of productivity, efficiency and sustainability, Kress is not just keeping pace with the future of battery power, it is defining it.

Uni-Scratch maintains pitch standard between renovations

Næstved Stadium, the principal football venue in Næstved, Denmark, has a long and varied history, serving as the home ground for top-tier clubs such as Næstved Boldklub and Næstved HG.

Over the years, the stadium has undergone numerous upgrades to maintain its status as a professional football standard facility, including the installation of advanced lighting, under-turf heating, and a comprehensive renovation of the playing surface.

Central to these improvements is the work of Head Groundsman Alex Moreno, who has overseen turf management for the Næstved municipality’s sports fields for the past eight years. Responsible for 59 hectares of natural grass, multiple artificial turf surfaces, and over 75 football pitches of various sizes, Alex brings extensive expertise and dedication to his role. When the first major renovation was needed and funding for a field top maker

was unavailable, Alex chose to repeatedly use the Uni-Scratch to clean out the pitch.

Although this approach was much more time-consuming than using an Imants KORO FIELDTOPMAKER for instance, his perseverance and hard work with the UniScratch™ ultimately yielded a quality playing surface for the following season, demonstrating his commitment to achieving the best results despite challenges.

In 2024, the stadium's playing surface underwent a total renovation, which included deep excavation and removal of all topsoil across 8,000 m2. New drainage, irrigation systems, and hybrid fibre stitching were implemented to ensure optimal conditions. To meet tight deadlines and guarantee immediate playability, the team invested in rolling grass solutions between full renovations. This included the successful application of the Campey Uni-Scratch, which played an essential role in maintaining the high standard of the natural and hybrid pitches.

The Campey Uni-Scratch is specifically designed to infill or refill during the installation and ongoing maintenance of synthetic grass carpets. Its versatility extends

to natural grass hybrid carpet pitches, where it is also effective for the final removal of organic matter during annual renovations.

It operates on four supporting rollers that are adjustable in height, enabling operators to select the most suitable working depth for various turf conditions. The machine’s rotors can be fitted with either springs or linear brushes made from PPL, enhancing its adaptability to different maintenance requirements.

"The Uni-Scratch’s versatility and efficiency were absolutely crucial during our renovation period," says Alex Moreno. "It enabled our team to achieve a world-class playing surface faster than ever before. Its ability to operate flawlessly over large areas guaranteed consistent turf quality, and the sturdy design meant we experienced minimal downtime and maintenance throughout the process."

There is a strong emphasis on making products that are simple to use and flexible, allowing grounds professionals to apply them in different weather conditions and consistently achieve robust turf performance.

Unlike conventional fertilisers, the Consolidate range is designed as a plant health solution rather than just a nutrient input. The unique application methods target the root zone, supporting the turf’s natural ability to manage stress and recover from daily challenges. This focus on the root

system encourages strong plant development, improved stress tolerance, and consistent outcomes on real-world sports surfaces.

A particular strength of these products lies in their adaptability. Whether used during rainy weather or dry spells, they are designed to integrate seamlessly into existing turf management routines.

The company’s mission is to provide the building blocks and support needed for resilient, highfunctioning turf.

Three decades of Wiedenmann development

As LAPU Magazine celebrates 30 years, Wiedenmann UK— now in its 34th year—stands as a near contemporary, having grown and evolved alongside both the publication and the wider turf industry.

In that time, Wiedenmann UK has helped define deep-tine aeration through steady innovation and a close working relationship with the operators who rely on its machines.

The 2000s brought a major step change.

The Terra Spike XP, introduced just before the Millenium, pushed aeration depth to 40 cm and set a new benchmark. Crucially, hands-on demos and direct

customer feedback travelled straight back to the factory, shaping upgrades and accessories that many turf professionals now consider essential.

When the Terra Spike XF arrived in 2004, it heralded the essence of smooth. Twin-drive technology, delivering faster, quieter and smoother operation. That breakthrough laid the groundwork for today’s GXi, XD and SL models.

Momentum continued through the mid-2000s as the range expanded into sweeping, collecting, blowing, cutting and raking—broadening Wiedenmann UK’s reach across rough-management

tasks. The Whisper Twister blower, the contour-following Super 500 collector and the updated Terra Rake helped anchor this new direction.

Today, the lineup includes ten Terra Spikes; the Super 500, 600 and new 1300 collectors; multiple Terra Rakes; and advanced blowers. The Terra Float Air seeder has also become a trusted choice for overseeding and renovation on elite courses.

Wiedenmann UK continues to refine, respond and advance— its next generation already taking shape.

The Bufalo mulcher range (pictured) is reversible and has a sliding headstock to offset the flail bed; available in widths from 2.5-3.1m it is suitable for shredding thick residues using a spiral rotor and dual toothed counter blade.

It is partnered with a Giraffa, which can be specified in various sizes and builds up to the 2.57m Giraffa XL. This machine can also be angled to cut down banks or to side hedges.

Also on offer from the company is a range of reach arm mowers with models to suit tractors from 800kg weight; at the top of the range is the Katia Evo which has 5.5-6.43m reach, a choice of heads up to 1.25m wide, hydraulic forward head movement and arm float option.

Razorback was acquired by GreenTec earlier this year and the Danish manufacturer has already expanded its range of machines with the new Scorpion 490 Plus which offers a 4.90m reach and is built from Strenx 700 high-strength steel to reduce overall machine weight while significantly increasing durability. It is designed for compact tractors from 2.5-4.0 tonnes.

A new, more powerful hydraulic system with increased oil flow and pressure offers stable operation and

higher cutting capacity, especially in dense vegetation.

AHC, Automatic Height Control (optional) helps the operator maintain a consistent working height over the terrain, improving comfort and reducing machine wear and operation is via the Danfoss Prof 1 joystick

The RotorFlex 270° rotating cutting head and hybrid arm system come as standard, providing flexible positioning of the cutting head and easy manoeuvring.

For 2025/26, the full Agrimaster hedge cutter range available from Weaving Machinery has undergone a visual transformation, moving from the long-standing bold orange to a refreshed orange-and-grey livery.

The AGL compact hedgecutter series is the compact, lightweight solution designed for operators working in public spaces, parks, schools and landscaped areas. Despite its smaller footprint, the AGL shares the same operatorfriendly features as larger Agrimaster machines.

Its lightweight, rear-mounted design ideal for tight spaces and smaller tractors and it offers dual-direction cutting for a clean, consistent finish. Features include parallel arm geometry, fully independent hydraulics and head float for optimal ground following.

At the top of the Agrimaster range and said to be Ideal for large-scale operations and contractors, the R650T features a telescopic arm for extended reach and improved versatility, reinforced frame and arm assembly for durability under high workloads.

Agrimaster also offers rear mounted multi-purpose flails including the SHX which can be used in-line or offset and in working positions from +90 to -40deg, ideal for ditching, bank maintenance and verge upkeep and with models suitable for a wide range of tractor sizes.

Blayney Agriculture offers the Contractor series hedge cutter, built for durability and designed with contractors and local authorities in mind. They offer reach of 5/56.5m and use Power Shredder technology, which ensures more power is delivered to the rotor, resulting in a finer cut and saving both time and fuel.

The hydraulic system is designed to maximise power at the head while keeping oil temperatures under control.

The HDX excavator cutting head is a heavy duty flail head for use on a wide range of excavators.

It uses a high-torque piston motor and a dynamic rotor for a fine chop.

This head is suitable for hedgecutting, rushes and rough vegetation, including on wet or awkward ground where tractors struggle.

Blaney can build heads to suit most makes and models of digger, with a dedicated hydraulic ‘Powerbox’ to optimise rotor speed and protect the motor.

Sister company Quad-X offers a range of solutions for ATVs and UTVs

The 3-in-1 Power Shredder can be used for mowing, verge cutting and hedge-facing from an ATV/UTV, offering multiple working positions to cover different tasks around sites, estates and tracks.

Power Shredder mowers are designed for dense and rough

vegetation. They are compact and easy to get into areas that are difficult for tractors, such as paths, banks and around obstacles.

The Wildcut rotary mower is billed as the world’s most

powerful ATV rotary mower. It offers efficient performance even in dense vegetation, while the Strimit ATV strimmer is a towed strimmer with offset capability for laneways, paths and around posts and fences.

Verge mowing at scale Multi-tasking Toros

For contractors cutting large areas of roadside verge and working in demanding locations Reform Metrac H70R and Muthing MU-M mower from Simon Richard is the ultimate combination. It’s the choice of leading businesses such as Ray Britland Contracting and Cotswold Estates and Gardens.

Powered by a reliable 75hp Perkins Stage V engine, the Metrac H70R is designed to handle extreme slopes with the engine and cab mounted at the centre of gravity in the chassis.

Updates on the latest H70R version include tractive power increased by 14% compared to its predecessor.

A two-range hydrostatic drive

offers a top speed of 40kph and two mechanical off-road reductions, controllable via pedal or drive lever.

The linkage technology is based on a load-dependent working hydraulic system with electrohydraulic weight compensation; cat 1 and 2 front and rear linkages each have 1500kg lift capacity and front and rear ptos are standard.

A standout feature is the multifunction joystick, integrated into the mechanical drive lever, which allows the selection of front, rear, allwheel, crab, and offset all-wheel steering modes.

Wide, low-pressure tyres ensure maximum traction while maintaining low ground pressures.

A new cab design has a full glass door for improved visibility and a wider entry. The air conditioning system has also been updated with mixed air flowing from ventilation nozzles in the dashboard.

Paired with the Muthing MU-H Vario it’s a formidable verge mowing tool: the Muthing’s purpose-designed hood, high rotor and cutting speeds and removable shredding bar spread the shredded material evenly behind the roller giving excellent mulching and shredding quality. It’s made from high quality steel QST/S with multi position Cat. I + II headstock for front or rear mounting; models are from 1.4-2.2m working widths. The self-cleaning rear roller carries the mulcher and is adjustable for height.

Major trimming hedges and fuel costs

You could say that when it comes to hedge-cutting, Michael Tomlinson is a bit of a perfectionist. He’s been doing it since 1982 and serves a wide range of agricultural and rural clients in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire.

In the past, Michael had been using flail hedge cutting units to deal with typical hawthorn hedging on farms and evergreens in the rural suburbs. Using a flail mower on these hedge types often incurs issues with quality of finish and result in a lot of often large leftover clippings.

Michael took delivery of a 1.43m hedge cutter unit manufactured by Major Equipment, a company well known for manufacturing

high-end mowers capable of handling the roughest and toughest of work environments.

Major’s 1.43m Hedge-cutter head, fits directly to most hedge cutter arms on the market without modifications and comes fully galvanised for long life protection against corrosion.

“Once we started using the Major Hedge-cutting head,” enthused Michael, “ we calculated that compared with our flail heads, we were saving around £100 per week on fuel costs alone, purely because it was so much easier to drive. It also mulched the evergreen clippings about the same as a flail head.”

A flail mower or rotary mower is ideal for verge cutting, according to Business Division Manager Jon Cole at Reesink Turfcare, the exclusive Toro distributor in the UK.

“These can handle longer grass, less frequent cuts, and are cheaper to maintain,” he says.

Flail cutting heads on the Toro LT-F3000 can cut long and short grass, wet or dry, and with the added benefit of an interchangeable cylinder attachment, it offers the capability for the front-facing triple mower to cut two ways when needed.

Having a mower that can tackle the most challenging environments and terrain with greater ground contour control, and then multitask by leaving a premium finish on

playing fields and sports grounds, is a really cost-effective solution, Reesink Turfcare suggests.

Andrew Gilliar, Countrywide Grounds Maintenance franchise owner, comments: “We needed a machine versatile enough to deliver a consistently good cut regardless of grass type, grass length or weather conditions. You get this from the LT-F3000.”

It is also road legal which appeals to many including Andrew Bradley, Landscapes manager at HTS Group: “The LT-F3000 is road legal which is ideal for us. Most sites are six miles away, and their proximity to busy roads makes parking a nightmare, being able to drive our machines to jobs is a must. A bonus with Toro’s triple flail is that it has a good road speed.”

Toro’s Groundsmaster 3300 brings similar benefits as the LT-F3000 in a rotary form. It too has an optional flail attachment and can deliver year-round productivity and multiple cutting options, cope easily with longer, coarser, dry or wet grass and combat extended mowing cycles.

This mower moves from job to job quickly thanks to the 23kph transport speed; the 1.5 and 1.63m cutting decks are productive, and the 54 lire fuel tank maximises mowing time and minimises downtime to refuel. Toro’s CrossTrax all-wheeldrive system provides automatic traction control by shifting power to the wheels in slippery conditions, and a 7.8-inch ground clearance makes it easy for the mowers to climb kerbs and manoeuvre over obstacles.

British playground manufacturers showcase new Certification

Made in Britain, a not-forprofit trade organisation that champions British-made products, is providing British play equipment manufacturers with a competitive edge through its new Environmental & Social Value (ESV) Certification.

Sutcliffe Play and Wicksteed Leisure have recently adopted the ESV Certification to showcase their role in driving economic growth, environmental responsibility and positive social impact.

Aligned with the UK Government’s latest Social Value Model (2025) and the Procurement Act 2023, the Certification allows organisations to practically demonstrate their environmental and social value, helping them stand out without having to change operations or jump through hoops.

John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, said: “It’s fantastic to see how the ESV Certification is benefitting Sutcliffe Play

and Wicksteed Leisure, helping them to draw out and promote their environmental and social value credentials.

“These are two great British manufacturers making some of the best play equipment in the world, and they’re doing that in a sustainable, ethical way that has far-reaching impact. In helping them to highlight their environmental and social value, we’re helping them get the credit they deserve.

“We understand that UK buyers are increasingly required to consider environmental and social value standards when awarding contracts. Thousands of UK manufacturers already meet many of these standards without even knowing itso this Certification simply helps them to draw out and promote it, giving them a new commercial edge in a highly competitive market.”
