Welcome

The latest Digital Construction Report reveals a sector undergoing a profound psychological transformation, marked by a rapid embrace of AI and a growing fear of being left behind.

The report shows that the construction industry has reached a digital tipping point. While just five years ago AI was a niche technology used by less than one in ten professionals, today more than two in five have integrated it into their daily work. This five-fold increase signals a new era for a sector that has historically been cautious of new technology.

This rapid adoption is coupled with a significant shift in mindset. Almost three in five professionals now express anxiety about their organisation falling behind without digital adoption, a sharp increase from just over a third in 2023.

The report shows that AI is a practical tool being used today. The most common applications among architects, engineers, and specifiers are: searching for technical information; drafting and reviewing text; and analysing project data.

This practical application is building confidence, with most users believing AI will significantly increase their productivity.

Paradoxically, this growing digital anxiety is matched by a newfound confidence in the industry's progress. For the first time, more than half of professionals believe the

construction sector is no longer lagging behind other industries in digital adoption, a remarkable turnaround from previous years.

The report also highlights how environmental pressures are accelerating digital adoption. The use of digital tools for assessing energy and water demand has nearly doubled in two years, now used by almost two-thirds of professionals. This comes as the industry prepares for significant regulatory changes, including the Future Homes Standard and the introduction of Digital Product Passports.

Dr Stephen Hamil, Innovation Director at NBS, commented: "The rise in Artificial Intelligence defines this year’s findings, revealing a remarkable transformation. What we're seeing is no longer about whether to adopt new technologies, but how quickly organisations can embrace them. This psychological shift represents a pivotal moment for our industry."

ACO Building Drainage launches Blue Roof Guide – Volume 2

ACO Building Drainage has published the second volume of its Blue Roof Guide to help architects, engineers, specifiers and contractors design resilient, multi-functional roofscapes. The new guide explains how blue and blue-green roof systems can store and manage rainfall on site, reduce peak flows to overstretched sewers and support passive irrigation and biodiversity on roof areas. Technical sections go into detail about ACO’s patented RoofBloxx system: a shallow, high-strength geocellular attenuation layer designed to sit independently of the roof membrane. Implementation and installation are also discussed, including together with the proper use of flow restrictors, access and diffuser units, capillary wicks and reservoir trays. To download the guide, see ACO.co.uk.

Innovative materials like fermacell® fibre gypsum boards are transforming how architects approach internal wall construction, offering a smarter, faster alternative to traditional blockwork and plasterboard systems without sacrificing strength or performance. One of the most compelling advantages of fermacell® fibre gypsum boards are their installation flexibility. Unlike blockwork, which typically requires the building envelope to be sealed before internal walls can be constructed, fermacell® fibre gypsum boards can be installed before the envelope is closed. By enabling earlier commencement of internal works, fermacell® helps compress the overall schedule, allowing multiple trades to work

Zentia

Integrating ceiling tiles with lighting systems

Integrated ceiling and lighting systems bring together form and function to create cohesive, energy-efficient, and future-proof spaces. Integrated LED solutions can reduce energy use by up to 80% compared to traditional lighting, particularly when paired with high-reflectance tiles that optimise light distribution and minimise the number of fittings required. And because the tiles and lighting are designed to work together, installation becomes faster, cleaner, and more predictable - reducing on-site challenges while enhancing overall project efficiency. Zentia’s ceiling solutions combine design and performance to transform interiors. Oplia Triangle tiles create striking geometric ceilings, perfect for creative offices or retail, while Prestige tiles boost light reflectance and energy efficiency, supporting wellbeing in workplaces like Velux UK’s HQ.

in parallel and reducing idle time on site. Speed is another critical factor. fermacell® fibre gypsum boards are quicker to install than blockwork, thanks to its dry construction method and ease of handling. There’s no need for wet trades, curing times, or complex logistics around mortar and mixing. fermacell® fibre gypsum boards deliver the strength and durability of blockwork, making them suitable for high-impact areas, crowd loading applications and demanding environments. Installers can move swiftly, and the boards can be cut and fixed with standard tools, streamlining the process even further. For architects working on tight deadlines or fast-track projects, this speed translates directly into time saved and milestones met.

combine to return impressive COP

A large bungalow has undergone a new type of HVAC replacement that has combined Unico’s 3-in-1 heating, ventilation and cooling system, with a Vaillant Air Source Heat Pump and its supporting controls. The two integrated systems achieved a standout heat rating of 4.4 Coefficient of Performance (COP) in March 2025 as one of the first integrations of these two innovative technologies. The homeowner’s main priorities when looking into an HVAC system, were to avoid the costly installation and disruption of underfloor heating with an aim to minimise the bungalow’s

carbon footprint, to maximise both energy efficiency and year-round comfort for all weather conditions, all to be upheld with an excellent COP. The Unico System’s 3-in-1 heating, cooling and ventilation and cooling capability stood out for homeowner Matt Inch, whose research led him to local contractor JLN Plumbing Heating & Electrics, a registered Unico System Specialist Partner (USP) with over 25 years’ experience in the industry. Wetherby

secures BBA certification for façade system

The popular Brick Effect Render system from EWI provider Wetherby Wall Systems now carries full BBA (British Board of Agrément) certification and achieves an A1 fire rating to EN 13501-1 when installed with stone wool insulation. With the added assurance of BBA certification, it now sets a new benchmark for safe and compliant façade solutions. “Our Brick Effect Render has always been popular for its traditional aesthetic. Now, specifiers and contractors can choose it with full confidence that it meets the highest fire safety and certification standards available in the UK,” said Joe Ragdale, Technical Director at Wetherby. The system is applied in two layers, starting with a

coloured mortar base followed by a complementary top coat. This top layer is carefully cut back to reveal a realistic brick finish that combines visual appeal with exceptional performance. When used with stone wool insulation, the system achieves an A1 classification for non-combustibility under European testing standards. The BBA certification confirms that the Brick Effect Render system meets UK building regulations and performs consistently across key areas including impact resistance, thermal efficiency, weather protection and long-term durability. Wetherby also offers the option of an extended warranty, with a life expectancy of up to 60 years.

Promat

Promat’s fire-rated glass door systems balance natural light with assured safety

Two steel-framed glass door systems from Promat UK enable natural light transmission to be maximised within buildings whilst also offering 30 or 60-minute fire protection. The Promat PYROSEC® Door and PYROSEC® SLIMLITE Door systems have been tested to provide integrity and insulation (EI) fire resistance for 30 and 60 minutes, making them suitable for use in the majority of buildings. Both offer a strong aesthetic appeal thanks to their large vision panels, which facilitate a high level of natural light flow through buildings. This is achieved thanks to minimal stainless steel frame members, with the PYROSEC® SLIMLITE Door offering a super-slim option.

TBA FIREFLY

FIREFLY Phoenix curtain specified to protect warehouse

A vast warehouse in the Medway area of Kent has had its fire performance upgraded by a regular FIREFLY® customer utilising the manufacturer’s Phoenix barrier material together with the recently launched 180 ablative batt and ancillary products to create a curtain running around the building perimeter. The work at the Noatum Logistics ePort warehouse was carried out by Essex based T and R Fire Protection using a variety of access approaches to attach the lightweight Phoenix barriers to roof purlins and floor beams. FIREFLY®’s high temperature adhesive and special staples were used to secure the 150mm overlaps between lengths of the Phoenix material, as well as to secure the curtains to the lengths of steel angle and heavier section Unistruts.
