Industry continues to count the costs and impacts of Brexit

Four years after environmental horticulture became the first sector hit by the full impacts of Brexit checks, businesses are still grappling with soaring costs, significant delays, stock damage, and excessive bureaucracy.

These challenges drive up costs and limit consumer choice, leaving the industry in an increasingly precarious position.

The UK’s environmental horticulture sector is a vital contributor to the economy and a linchpin of the green agenda.

Plants, trees, and flowers produced domestically were valued at £1.7 billion in 2023, while imports of plants and plant material totalled £780 million, with 99% sourced from the EU.

These figures underscore the sector’s importance to economic growth and its support of millions of UK gardeners, landscapers, and

retailers. However, its reliance on international connections, particularly with the EU, exposes vulnerabilities to disruptions in trade and supply chains.

These challenges and the financial burdens of trade create a difficult operating environment for businesses across the sector.

Current policies, such as the Common User Charge (CUC), disproportionately increase costs for small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs), making up approximately 95% of the environmental horticulture sector.

Meanwhile, inadequate infrastructure at Border Control Posts (BCPs) leads to delays and stock waste. The lack of a mutual plant health agreement further disadvantages UK businesses compared to their EU competitors, exacerbating friction and limiting trade opportunities.

and communities. In 2024, #GroundsWeek reached an impressive 18 million people, showcasing the growing appreciation for the essential

Jennifer Pheasey, Director of Public Affairs at the Horticultural Trades Association (HTA), said:

“The environmental horticulture sector, vital to the UK’s green economy, has suffered significantly from the effects of Brexit for too long. Four years after leaving the EU, the anticipated benefits have yet to materialise, while we continue to face challenges that threaten the stability of our businesses and trade.

“The past year has been marked by severe trade border issues, including significant delays, excessive red tape, and rising costs, all of which limit consumer choice.

“These difficulties are further compounded by unpredictable weather and the restrictions outlined in the government’s 2024 autumn budget. These obstacles are not only persisting; they are worsening. Now is the time for action.

“As we approach 2025, the sector needs support to overcome these challenges and unlock its full potential. We welcome the ambition to reset relations with the EU, but immediate action

is necessary to foster growth, and repairing UK-EU relations is crucial for addressing these challenges.”

about

There was plenty to be enthusiastic about in January, not least a busy BTME which saw a number of significant product launches at BIGGA’s flagship event. The halls and education seminar remained busy throughout the first two days of the event and there were definite signs of optimism. Concerns do persist, obviously, with some attending the event suggesting there is likely to be some belt tightening this year.

The challenges keep coming. One that has faced the wider industry in recent years has been Brexit. Although some sectors have fared better than others since the UK left the EU, there is little doubt Brexit continues to have an impact on the way business is conducted.

From manufacturers changing the way they operate to issues regarding moving products to Northern Ireland and generally the major increases in paperwork, the industry has needed to adapt. The latest HTA research featured on the front page shows these challenges continue to mount and have an impact.

This month we have a diverse range of product areas featured in the magazine. From the Play & Activity sector through to Sweepers, Collectors, Blowers & Vacs, we spotlight the latest developments in these product areas. Jane Carley reflects on the rise in technology, battery power and robotics in the Hedge & Verge sector. There is also the usual look at the Urban Environment and Machinery market.

As Spring starts to appear on the horizon, hopefully the optimism displayed in Harrogate last month will spread throughout the year.

Etesia Hydro 100 is the perfect solution

The Retreats Group, which encompasses three of the leading luxury hotels in Wales — Twr y Felin Hotel, Roch Castle, and Penrhiw Priory — has always been dedicated to maintaining immaculate grounds that refl ect the beauty of its locations.

For Ollie Davies, the groundskeeper and supervisor for The Retreats Group, maintaining these stunning landscapes has become signifi cantly easier since the purchase of a Etesia Hydro 100 ride-on mower.

“The properties are undulating and steep in places,” says Ollie. “My brother used to help me look after the grounds, and when he left, we decided that instead of employing someone else full-time, we would invest in one of these machines and see how it would benefi t me.”

Before the Hydro 100, Ollie managed the extensive lawns using pedestrian mowers—a task that was both timeconsuming and physically demanding.

“Prior to the Etesia machine, I would cut them all with a pedestrian mower. It was a lot of hard work. This Etesia saves so much time and money. It is a great bit of kit.”

The Etesia Hydro 100 III ride-on mower is designed for professional users who require top-quality mowing and collection performance in all weather conditions.

Powered by an 18 HP twincylinder Kawasaki engine, it features a modern hydraulic drive transmission with differential lock, a large 500litre grass box, and a cutting deck with rear central ejection for effi cient grass collection.

Given the uneven terrain of the properties, Ollie decided on the Hydro 100, known for its differential lock and sturdy design.

The Hydro 100’s differential lock has proven invaluable on the steep, slippery slopes of the properties.

Two new mixtures and nine new formulations

In their pursuit of high performance, sustainable seed solutions, DLF have introduced a number of new mixtures and formulations across the Johnsons Sports Seed range – all outlined in the brand-new 2025 catalogue.

In a particularly exciting expansion of their fine turf range, 2025 brings two new mixtures and seven new formulations, while research across DLF’s global breeding centres has contributed to their strongest ever line-up for sports turf.

Building on the success of Johnsons J Ultrafine Rye 100, 2025 brings increased versatility with the introduction of J Ultrafine Rye 25 and J Ultrafine Rye 50 – new 25% and 50% perennial ryegrass mixtures ideal for close mown applications such as greens, tees, and bowling greens, as well as high-traffic areas like fairways, pathways, tennis courts and cricket outfields.

Blending highly ranked ultrafine ryegrass cultivars on the STRI close mown table, the range offers multiple benefits including fineness of leaf, wear tolerance, quick recovery, rapid establishment and sustainable performance.

Other highlights from the updated golf range include the new formulation of J Green which includes 20% Sybille, a new, No.1 ranked slender creeping red fescue for close mown turf.

With its high density and disease tolerance, Sybille helps to supress unwanted weeds and diseases, reducing the need for pesticides.

Sybille is also incorporated in the 2025 formulations of J Fescue, J Links and J Premier Tee.

For sports turf, the 2025 Johnsons range utilises the latest global research on disease trends and resistance to give turf managers mixtures that help to protect their surfaces by choice, not by chance.

Demonstrating exceptional disease resistance from Brown Patch and Grey Leaf Spot in trials, along with superior drought tolerance and reduced requirements for water and fertiliser, 4turf ® mixtures remain a trusted and reliable partner to high performance maintenance programmes.

4turf ® is available in 25, 50 and 100% formulations within the 2025 Johnsons Sports Seed range.

Johnsons also continues to lead the way with class-leading mixtures for cricket. The new 2025 formulation of J Premier Wicket promises to deliver class leading wear tolerance, rapid establishment and high disease resistance for village squares to county quality cricket squares.

In addition, DLF have invested heavily in their in-house production of native-origin wildflowers.

A dedicated area at their Inkberrow site now spans over 80 acres, helping to sustain the increase in demand for mixtures from their ProFlora range.

ECOPROTEC introduces ‘just washed look’ Porcelain Tile Enhancer

ECOPROTEC has launched its new Porcelain Tile Enhancer – a water-based treatment for exterior and interior porcelain tiles and pavers.

As well as giving tiles a ‘just washed look’, the new self-shine enhancer also provides practical benefits, being highly resistant to foot traffic, general wear and stains, and also promoting easier maintenance. The new eco-friendly treatment also provides UV-resistance and, whilst glossy in nature, causes minimal change to a tile’s slip resistance properties.

On clean, dry and residue-free surfaces, ECOPROTEC Porcelain Tile Enhancer is applied with a foam roller, sealant applicator pad or paint brush until an even, thin film is created.

The treatment should be left to dry for one hour. For a more enhanced appearance, further coats can be applied at rights angles – and with an hour’s drying time between each application - to a maximum of four coats.

The treatment can also be used on existing tiles and pavers which should first be cleaned with ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner and then rinsed and left to dry for 24 hours before application.

Being water-based, the enhancer can be applied over residual moisture and is safe to use in unventilated spaces. It is also breathable, so will not trap moisture within the tile or substrate. To maintain the glossy aesthetic, tiles and pavers can be renovated by stripping the original coating using ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover and reapplying every 2-3 years.

Surfaces should be routinely swept and regularly mopped using ECOPROTEC General Cleaner. ECOPROTEC Porcelain Tile Enhancer is available in one litre and five litre units and has an approximate coverage of 30-40 m2 per litre, per coat, depending on the tile texture.

Ladybank Golf Club commit to Ventrac

Ladybank Golf Club, situated in wooded heathland 10 miles west of St Andrews in Fife, is the latest prestigious Scottish golf club to purchase Ventrac equipment to assist in the maintenance of their challenging heathland championship course.

Designed by Old Tom Morris, Ladybank is a rare course; although situated in Fife, it’s not one of the famous links courses that dots the coast.

Grant Frogley is the Course Manager and is responsible for a team of 8 full-time greenkeepers, who maintain this beautiful and challenging course.

“I’m one of the many converts to the Ventrac compact tractor and attachments,” he said. “We had two rough mowers when I came in, each one for different areas of the course.

“We’re a relatively flat site in terms of elevation, but we do have quite a lot of subtle movement with some extreme hollows and bumps. The rough mowers weren’t the best at following contours, so we

found ourselves doing a lot more hand work.

“We’ve got the Contour deck and the Tough Cut deck. We use the Tough deck a lot during the winter to clean up the woodlands and remove the gorse and broom. We basically cut everything that’s not on the maintained grass areas.

“We cut every blade of grass during the winter, so it’s very versatile and mobile for getting in amongst the trees. As I said previously, it’s very good at removing brash, gorse and broom.

“It came with a rear threepoint linkage kit, which is brilliant. We bought a small sprayer with hand lance that hooks up on the back of it and we also have a terra rake, which we use a lot during winter projects, especially if we’ve got soil that just needs a tilth-up before we re-turf.

“It’s brilliant and such a light footprint, it just glides over the surface.”

Versatility for the landscaper

For Landscaper Contractors, the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor and its myriad of attachments is ideal for major projects. When significant areas have to be cleared, Ventrac has an attachment that just makes the job easier.

If trees have been felled, then the Stump Grinder comes into its own, making quick work of the residual stumps, while logs, branches and rocks can be carried using the Loader, Rock Bucket or Log Grapple.

Once clear of obstructions the soil can prepared using the Tiller, Power Rake or Landscape Rake and then prepared for final planting with the Soil Cultivator, which effectively buries rocks and stones before utilising the Primary

Seeder, which plants any type of seed directly into the soil with a consistent and accurate drop rate.

Should you wish to lay power cables or irrigation pipe, then the Trencher can reach a depth up to metre, safely burying these utilities out of harm’s way. For more general tasks, there’s a Tough Cut deck for clearing scrub, brambles and thickets, a Sod Cutter for lifting turf and an Edger for maintaining pristine driveways.

And once your site has matured, there’s a choice of nine different mowers for maintaining any grass surface from fine turf to rough scrub.

Urban paving repointing without delays

Paving pointing and repointing is often a major headache for local authorities, and their contractors, due to the limitations of jointing materials, especially the delays waiting for a suitable weather window.

With GftK Paving Jointing Mortar, you can complete the jointing or repointing, and get the job completed on time.

A huge amount of paving pointing, especially repointing, fails the day it is applied, but the delamination, lack of bond strength, and fine shrinkage cracks, are often not immediately visible for up to a year or more.

These failures are largely due to the disruption of water to cement ratios, and/or the ‘real’ shrinkage on site, being out of all proportion to the shrinkage in ‘laboratory’ tests. Manufacturers generally do not make bad products but applying them in wet conditions and / or onto residual water in the joints, means they are doomed to fail.

The unique state-of-the-art, twopart, epoxy resin based, GftK vdw 850plus, paving jointing system from NCC Streetscape, allows you to keep working through wet weather. There is no concern for residual water in the joints, the highly cohesive, self-

compacting mortar displaces the water, no tooling or additional finishing required either.

GftK vdw 850plus hardens quickly to get areas back into service as quickly as possible, then harden to withstand the toughest installation and service demands that public areas are exposed to. GftK vdw 850plus withstands frequent vehicular traffic, including multiple heavy and articulated trucks, extensive

de-icing salt usage in winter, as well as spillages of ‘all-sorts’.

These paved areas then require frequent high-pressure jetwashing, and often the use of mechanical street cleaning machines, all of which is no problem for GftK vdw 850plus. Say goodbye to expensive annual repointing, as well as repeated claims for trips and falls too.

Planters and Irrigation rejuvenate War Memorial

The Connah’s Quay War Memorial, situated in Wales, serves as a poignant tribute to the residents of Connah’s Quay and Shotton who were killed or reported missing during the First and Second World Wars.

Flintshire County Council aimed to enhance this memorial site by creating a serene garden space that would provide an area for reflection and honour the memory of those who served.

To achieve this, Flintshire County Council collaborated with EE Civils, based in Holywell, to install the bespoke planters and Mona Tank 24 irrigation systems and fi ll them with Green-tree topsoil, all supplied by Green-tech.

This collaborative effort sought to create a peaceful garden area using planters that would contribute to the site’s visual appeal and biodiversity. Additionally, the memorial

garden would support community engagement, with plans for local schools to adopt and maintain some of the planters.

Charlotte Wilcock, Project Development Officer at Flintshire County Council, said: “Green-tech was selected as the range of planters on offer worked with our requirements and timescales.

“Our Green-tech advisor, James Renfrew, was supportive in advising and quoting for the required products and discussing the project and its requirements.”

The successful installation of the planters at Connah’s Quay War Memorial highlights the positive impact of collaborative efforts in community regeneration.

Wet weather urban paving repointing

Longer-term durability increases your works sustainability and budget cost efficiency with GftK’s vdw 850plus paving joint mortars.

The pointing of new paving, and especially for the repointing ‘difficult’ smaller format urban paving, is now possible for the long term, even in wet weather, with GftK’s vdw paving joint mortars.

Using the unique and best-inclass GftK vdw mortars, also means completion on time and without delays due to the weather, or extended periods of disruption with area closures, and you can say goodbye to expensive annual repointing and repeated costly claims for trips and falls. This durable long-term, cost-effective and sustainable performance is well proven on paving projects all around the UK since 2007.

In all these busy public traffi c spaces, the previous, largely

cement-based, pointing and repointing materials had failed, despite generally being good products, with their deterioration and breakdown signifi cant within just a year or two because of the demanding environments. The biggest problems were the frequently

wet-weather conditions during the pointing, plus the joint size variations, which causes big problems for all cement materials.

The areas are also then subjected to exposed weathering and frequent vehicular traffi c, with

multiple heavy trucks, plus extensive de-icing salt usage in winter, as well as spillages of all-sorts, then requiring frequent jet-washing and often the use of mechanical street cleaning machines.

However, all this exposure was and is no problem for the unique GftK vdw 850 paving joint system.

Additionally, these important paving projects could be completed on time and on budget, because the jointing works could continue, even in cold and wet weather, without delays.

These projects all clearly demonstrate GftK is the ideal solution for local authorities, term contractors, developers and their professional teams, to cost effectively refurbish and repoint natural stone paving setts on urban roads and other paved public spaces.

Over 22,000 trees planted across historic site

A 12.26-hectare planting project in Staffordshire is underway to enhance biodiversity and restore historic woodland areas.

Landowner Jonathan Capener, a third-generation steward of the land, is leading the project in partnership with Robinson Forestry and Tubex, supported by T W Hardesty Forestry & Rural Services, Hatton Contracts Ltd, and Cheviot Trees.

The site, which was once a racecourse in the early 1900s, is being transformed through a programme of woodland creation and restoration. The project is reconnecting fragmented ancient woodland and replanting areas lost to clearance around the Second World War.

At the end of their lifespan, they can be collected and recycled through Tubex’s dedicated Collection & Recycling Programme.

Once returned through this scheme, they are recycled and reused to produce new shelters, making them a circular product.

Tubex Enquiry 22

Tubex’s recyclable tree shelters were chosen for the project due to their durability and compatibility with the site’s objectives. These shelters, which are made with 35% recycled content, protect young trees from browsing animals while creating a favourable microclimate to aid establishment.

More than just mowing

The range of specialist ‘unmanned’ mowers continues to grow, with robotic and remote-controlled machines both offering greater efficiency in different circumstances.

Robotic mowers are designed to deliver autonomous operation, allowing operators to carry out other tasks while monitoring mowing or supervise several machines at once. Improvements in GPS guidance technology mean that they can truly become a professional option as there is no need for boundary wires, while developers are also beginning to capitalise on the opportunity to automate other turf maintenance tasks such as line marking and renovations.

Battery power, while not without its challenges, means quiet and emission-free performance, increasingly ticking sustainability boxes for purchasers.

Wessex International introduced the RoviMo Autonomous Mower at Saltex, designed to cut pitches without the hassle of stringing guidelines, and operating in compliance with official UEFA mowing regulations while offering various other cutting patterns.

It has a 63cm single blade rotary cutting deck, with options including a line marker to enable autonomous mowing and marking from the same robot, cylinder mower for greater precision mowing, sweeping kit for automatic grass collection and depositing, and brush for striping and to save time removing dew from pitches and greens before grounds staff start mowing.

With its intelligent control system, pure electric drive, and large-capacity battery to maximise mowing efficiency, the RM21 is designed for applications including sports pitches, golf courses, racecourses, solar farms, estates and orchards.

The RM21 rotary mower offers a choice of Eco, Normal and Power blade mode, mowing speeds and cut heights from 20-127mm.

Paused and completed operations are all recorded; with the user able to select an interrupted operation and click ‘Continue’ to pick up from where it was paused

This 100% electric mower has a runtime of up to eight hours between charges and offers quiet operation and minimised service costs.

It is controlled via RTK guidance and does not require a boundary wire; the RoviMo app is used to select mowing patterns, control speed and monitor operations and allows one operator to control several mowers at once. The pattern can be driven in ‘manual mode’ to mark waypoints or can be loaded from a previously stored job.

A 3D Lidar scanner allows safe autonomous operation in populated areas.

A full-size football pitch can be mown in just 2.5 hours, using an 86cm cylinder reel developed in conjunction with Infinicut. An optional grass collection system, complete with an auto-empty feature, is available, and there is a range of turf maintenance cassettes.

FJ Dynamics is also targeting sports grounds with its RM21 Combo robot, exclusively available in the UK through XDC Autonomous Solutions.

The RM21 offers multiple configurations, enabling autonomous completion of numerous grounds maintenance tasks.

or select a completed operation and tap ‘Restart’ to perform the operation again in full.

Charging can be carried out manually via mains connection and the included docking station; the RM21 will return to it for charging when the battery is low, before heading back out and picking up where it left off without manual intervention.

LiDAR provides 360deg realtime object detection, while Smart Path Planning uses built-in object avoidance to automatically plan mowing paths, helping prevent collisions and damage. In addition, the RM21 features collision bumpers, lift protection, and rain monitoring, plus controllable lights to make it more visible in the dark.

The RM21 can operate from a mobile RTK service or be supplied with a Radio RTK station to produce centimetre-level positioning accuracy for precision mowing and line marking. LiDAR technology creates a 3D cloud point map of the terrain to allows it to safely mow in complex areas, such as under trees or around objects.

It is controlled via a bespoke tablet or screen on the robot, with an app also included for remote mowing operation, task scheduling, monitoring, and history log via a mobile device.

Club volunteers delight with ISEKI compact tractor

The ISEKI TLE3410 has made a world of difference for the Market Harborough Rugby Club volunteer grounds team who are saving days’ worth of time a week using the compact tractor to mow.

Ten acres of land containing seven full-size rugby pitches are used to host training and matches for all the teams and the club actively sought a solution and was soon in contact with their local ISEKI dealer, Euromec.

With the TLE3410 in place for some months, the ease of mowing and the quality

achieved have been noticeable by the grounds team, and whilst pitch quality is speaking for itself, the service provided by Euromec has been equally as impressive to volunteer groundsman Tony Waterfield.

“We were struggling to keep up with the general maintenance of the pitches, which is why we decided to up the size of our tractor, and compared to what we’ve had in the past, the TLE3410 is noticeably better,” Tony said.

“We can mow the seven pitches a lot quicker, and I mean a lot quicker, than we used to, and with

everything done by volunteers, that obviously matters a lot.

“Our volunteers have taken to it very quickly because it’s easy to use, it’s easy to manoeuvre, it’s easy to park and easy to reverse. It’s a powerful machine but with ease, which is important. Euromec’s service has really backed up the tractor’s performance. They have been very good, not just selling the tractor but demonstrating it, explaining it and our different options for mowers.”

The TLE3410 is perfect for volunteer grounds teams due

to its simple, intuitive controls and impressive lift capacity, which allows users to handle heavy implements and tasks effortlessly.

At the same time, its robust power ensures reliable performance for mowing, aerating, or transporting materials. This combination of user-friendly design, strength, and versatility makes the TLE3410 a practical, efficient choice for volunteers maintaining sports pitches or grounds with ease and confidence.

Infinicut brings quality and ease-of-use

34 rotary

new

which arrived in October, has considerably upgraded their mowing processes.

Paul Murray, head groundsperson, said: “Our Inifinicut has been transformative in so many ways.

“If we start with the way I use it, the design focusses on ergonomics: handlebars are narrower, your arms are positioned more naturally, elbows tucked in so there’s less strain on your muscles, especially on turning. Operator experience is a priority, and it just feels much kinder.

“The quality of cut is exceptional; it’s almost as good as a cylinder mower, just a little bit to go. The cut is so clean and precise that there’s less chance for disease, which is another huge plus.

“The third really crucial factor is transportation, and the dedicated transport wheels, so no strain on the back roller, you just engage the separate wheels. Finally, the app technology is on a different level. You can set traction speed, cutting speed, a boost mode and all your cutting parameters from an app on your phone, which is blue toothed to the machine.”

Grass seed changes the game

Managing the expansive grounds of Warwick Schools Foundation requires precision and dedication, and Grounds Manager Duncan Toon relies on trusted solutions to meet these demands.

Recently, he found that MM Tetra Sport grass seed has become an essential part of his maintenance toolkit; ensuring top tier playing conditions for the schools’ varied sports facilities.

He has long relied on high-quality grass seed mixes - particularly MM50 and MM60 - which he praises for their consistency and strong performance. However, a recent shift in his approach has led to the adoption of MM Tetra Sport - a mixture by MM Seed that has quickly become his go-to choice.

Duncan first applied MM Tetra Sport to the main rugby pitches after an extensive renovation process and he credits the success of MM Tetra Sport to recommendations from both Matt Gresty of MM Seed and Mark Allen of Agrovista Amenity.
