Salary committee issues 2026 recommendations

Made up of representatives of BIGGA, the GCMA and independent members, the CGCS recommends a 4.8% salary increase for 2026.

The CGCS has once again convened to examine the issues facing the industry and provide guidance to employees and employers on the appropriate levels of remuneration for key roles in golf.

Whilst the sport continues to thrive it is clear that challenges remain in finding and retaining the right people to maintain this momentum. There are also pressures on employers to meet increased overheads in the same way that employees are facing a continued squeeze on household finances.

The CGCS takes both of these factors into account when arriving at a recommendation. Inflationary measures since the last recommendations were published have been almost the inverse of the previous twelve months. Whilst not quite reaching the highs of September 2023, inflation has

risen steadily with some signs that we may have reached a plateau. At the same time Regular Pay inflation is currently at its lowest for 24 months.

The Committee believes that the issue of highly qualified and experienced staff being caught up in terms of salary by those enjoying the rise in the NLW still remains a significant problem.

With these factors in mind the Committee is recommending an overall wage increase of 4.8% from January 1st, 2026. Employers will continue to take an approach to remuneration decisions that reflects their own business environment and we hope that this recommendation is given commensurate consideration at this point.

Further to this our deliberations have considered the value of factors in addition to pay awards. A growing number of employers are looking at how they can reward and motivate employees through a package of measures that include

private health insurance, a defined proportion of budget ringfenced for professional development and also demonstrating a commitment to a robust governance structure. These factors all contribute to giving employees the sense that the business in which they work is genuinely committed to staff well-being.

With this in mind the CGCS is also recommending employers consider adding a further 2% to the overall package of key staff from January 1st, 2026. We believe that this reflects the growing practice amongst employers of considering staff remuneration in this way and will have a positive impact on staff retention.

Should any employer wish to seek advice on these or any other issues relating to staff development please feel free to contact the GCMA or BIGGA who are well-placed to provide advice and support.”

Turn to genuine parts this winter

Getting ready for winter means being prepared for the unexpected.

Performance, reliability, and durability are all enhanced when parts are engineered specifically for the machine they serve, which is why it’s important to choose genuine.

Genuine means the high-quality choice. The materials Toro uses for all its parts make them synonymous with maximum performance, while rigorous testing makes sure they can withstand the daily stress that comes with keeping a course or pitch in top condition.

It’s equally important not to underestimate the power of simply being organised when it comes to planning winter servicing. Routine checks and prevention rather than cure are considerably cheaper than ad-hoc repairs and the cost of unexpected downtime.

While prepping is better than fretting, Reesink Turfcare, the official distributor of Toro genuine parts, is aware many are last-minute buyers, and everyone will fall foul of the unexpected, which is why it has two invaluable service options in its offering.

Having the reliability of Reesink as a distributor means customers can get the parts they need within 24 hours to anywhere in the UK. That speed of service reduces the amount of downtime incurred, as well as making life easier.

Michael Hampton, Supply Chain Manager at Reesink Turfcare, says: “The reassurance of having a genuine service doesn’t end there, it comes with a comprehensive stock reserve and local support. But significantly, customers can rely on the fact that they’re getting the genuine Toro part –and that’s a big distinction.”

Not only that but there’s also the option of peace of mind guaranteed with its ReeAssure servicing plans and three types for every budget and requirement level.

Michael expands: “Reesink’s ReeAssure scheme safeguards machinery and secures the club’s investment. Knowing the back up and support of experts in the field for all areas of maintenance and servicing brings great peace of mind. Clubs can spread the costs and plan the monthly fee into the budget to ensure machinery is always optimised no matter the time of year. It saves and frees up time to focus on other tasks and brings the local touch seeing as technicians will be coming from the nearest Reesink branch.”

GroundsFest Academy shines a light on irrigation maintenance

The latest free GroundsFest Academy event once again proved a huge success, this time focusing on Irrigation Maintenance in partnership with Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS).

Held at the impressive Throws Farm Research and Technology Centre in Great Dunmow, Essex – the heart of OAS’s research and development activity –attendees were treated to a day packed with hands-on learning, expert demonstrations, and practical advice.

The facility, which boasts trial areas, greenhouses, and advanced turf analysis equipment, provided the perfect backdrop for a day dedicated to improving irrigation knowledge and techniques across the turf and amenity sectors.

The CPD-accredited event guided participants through the fundamentals of irrigation systems, installation best practices, troubleshooting, and the latest innovations in irrigation technology. Sessions were designed to be practical and interactive, allowing attendees to get hands-on experience and take away knowledge that could be directly applied at their own sites.

Peter Robin from Origin Amenity Solutions, who led several sessions, said: “My purpose today was to help people understand how to make their irrigation systems better. A lot of sites have old systems that aren’t performing as they should, leading to issues like dry patch and poor turf uniformity. With a better

understanding of hydraulics, people can make small tweaks that make a big difference.”

The event attracted a wide range of attendees from across the UK — from schools and sports clubs to golf courses and local authorities — all eager to build their knowledge and share experiences.

Reflecting on another successful event, Bradley Tennant, Director of Education at the GroundsFest Academy, said: “We’ve had a really good mix of people attend today, from football and golf clubs to bowls clubs and landscaping companies. It’s fantastic to see the diversity in the industry and the enthusiasm to keep learning. It’s been another brilliant day for the GroundsFest Academy – and

we’ve got an exciting 12 months ahead, so watch this space!”

With each event continuing to attract strong numbers and positive feedback, the GroundsFest

Academy is firmly establishing itself as one of the most valuable free learning resources in the grounds care and landscaping sectors — giving professionals and volunteers at every level the

chance to expand their skills, share knowledge, and strengthen the future of the industry.

battery range delivers real ROI

For today’s grounds professionals, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is more than a buzzword — it’s a business-critical metric.

With rising fuel prices, tightening budgets, and growing sustainability goals, Toro’s battery-powered Revolution Series offers a smarter way to mow.

Backed by real-world data and a dedicated TCO Calculator, the range helps professionals understand when they’ll breakeven — and how much they’ll save long-term.

Key benefits of Toro’s batterypowered equipment:

• Fuel savings: No petrol or diesel required — just plug in and recharge from the mains.

• Lower maintenance costs: Fewer moving parts and simplified servicing reduce

• Downtime and expenses.

• Longer service life: Built for professional use, with robust engineering and durable components.

Break-even in ~3 years:

• GrandStand: Based on 400 mowing hours/year

• Z Master: Based on 500 mowing hours/year

From that point on, every hour of mowing delivers cost savings.

Toro’s TCO Calculator helps you compare the lifetime cost of battery vs. petrol equipment - factoring in fuel, maintenance, and usage. It’s a powerful tool for procurement teams and business owners alike.

As Matthew Coleman, UK Sales & Marketing Manager at Toro U.K. Limited, explains: “Toro’s Revolution Series isn’t just about going electric — it’s about making a smarter investment. With fewer service intervals, no fuel costs, and a typical breakeven point in just a few years, the numbers speak for themselves.

“We’re helping professionals take control of their costs while delivering the performance they expect from Toro.”

EGO Power+ launches powerful backpack blower

EGO Power+, a leading specialist of battery-powered outdoor power equipment, has introduced a new Backpack Blower to its PRO X series of durable tools for heavy-duty professional users.

Harnessing the power of two EGO 56V ARC Lithium batteries with PeakPower technology, the LBPX1100 is the most powerful battery-powered backpack blower on the market today, delivering an impressive 36N of blowing force.

Built for professionals, the variable speed trigger with

lock allows the user to stay in control as the blower handles even the most demanding clear-ups. And with low noise levels and an IPX5 rating, it can be used at any time of day, in all weather conditions.

As part of the PRO X series, the blower is compatible with EGO’s next-generation battery charging solution to ensure that this robust product always has the power it needs to work throughout the day.

Neil McGuinness, Product Manager for EGO, said: “We

have developed the LBPX1100 to answer our customer’s requests for a backpack blower that can deliver even more power than our current offering. At EGO, we go full throttle when it comes to power and performance, which is why our response was to create a trailblazing backpack blower that provides the highest power output of any battery-powered blower on the market.

“Unmatched power and performance, however, means we’ve had to put a lot of focus on the ergonomics of the

product. With a blower that can work all day, we needed to make sure that it is comfortable to work with for long hours.”

Designed ergonomically, the premium padded harness allows for greater comfort, as do the adjustable handles which can pivot up and down, as well as extend or retract in length. Velcro straps have also been added for easy positioning, while the two batteries slot on either side of the backpack to ensure that the tool is centrally balanced on the user’s back.

Seven sports pitch maintenance tips from SIS Pitches

The UK’s warmest summer on record has taught UK grounds staff seven valuable lessons, according to experts from a leading sports pitches specialist.

SIS Pitches has installed pitches or offered maintenance advice for more than half of the Premier League’s stadiums or training grounds in preparation for the 25/26 season and has seen an influx of queries from grounds staff across the UK’s sporting landscape.

Dean Gilasbey, Director of Field Services at SIS Pitches, has advice centred on seven key areas.

“Investing in the infrastructure and products needed to survive the dry conditions now means there will be far less chance of being caught off guard should we experience

• 1.53m

similar conditions next year as many of the preventative strategies we recommend will require some advanced planning,” he said.

“Drilling a borehole this autumn or winter will allow sufficient time to consider any potential water treatment requirements and will ensure an accessible supply is in place well ahead of any hosepipe bans coming into force next summer.

“We all know that not all species of grass are equal, so using a species more suitable to warmer climates such as Poa Pratensis is well worth considering.

“Aeration plays an important role in creating fissures underground to aid water movement and can significantly boost your chances of

accuracy and ensure clippings are evenly discharged. Phil concurs, “The quality of the end result is outstanding and, most of all, the team enjoy using them!”

Working alongside the zeroturns are other ride-on machines

from the Kubota portfolio including an F391 and G231HD cut and collect machine which, again, has improved both the productivity and safety of the grass cutting operation.

protecting the condition of the pitch when rain is scarce. Better still, aeration can also help to cool the temperature of the grass down too.

“Both liquid and mechanical aeration can be used in tandem to crack underground passages open and aid effective water circulation.

“Wetting agents are rarely promoted in the UK given our average annual rainfall is high. But they can be invaluable during a prolonged drought. In simple terms, a wetting agent reduces the surface tension of water on a grass pitch, allowing it to move more effectively through the soil and into the rootzone.

“Applying a grass pigmentation product to the turf itself will not only enhance its appearance but also acts as an equivalent to sun cream for grass – reducing its temperature and reflecting harmful UV rays to keep it healthier for longer.”

“Planning ahead will get you so far, but when those particularly dry summer months do come along, flexibility is key. Adjusting your maintenance regime by following some key principles during the height of summer can keep your pitch healthy for longer.”

Robot mowers are transforming turf management

In the evolving landscape of grounds management, robot mowers have emerged as more than just a novelty - they’re proving to be genuinely transformative tools for turf professionals.

At the forefront of this quiet revolution is Kress, whose intelligent robotic systems are redefining what’s possible in automated lawn care.

The appeal of robot mowers extends far beyond simply replacing manual labour. These autonomous systems offer something traditional mowing cannot: the ability to maintain turf continuously and unobtrusively, working around human activity rather than disrupting it. For institutions managing complex schedules and demanding multiple-use spaces, this flexibility is invaluable.

Mark Little, Head Groundsman at Cheam School, has witnessed this transformation firsthand.

“Our experience has been excellent,” he reports. “The Kress mowers are reliable, efficient, and remarkably easy to use. They’ve fitted seamlessly into our operations, consistently delivering a high-quality cut across the school grounds.”

What makes Kress robots particularly effective is their programmability and intelligence. Unlike older systems requiring perimeter wires and complex setup, Kress mowers use sophisticated mapping technology that’s intuitive to operate. “We can set them to work entirely around the school timetable,” Little explains, “mowing on Sundays, in the evenings, during holidays, and at any

time when pupils are not using the grounds.”

The operational benefits translate directly to the bottom line. Cheam School has saved approximately 500 labour hours annually - time that Little’s team now dedicates to more specialised work. “The greatest benefit is the time they give back to our team,” he notes. “With routine mowing now handled automatically, we can dedicate more time to the technical and specialist aspects of grounds management.”

The environmental impact is equally compelling. The school saves roughly £5,000 per year in diesel costs, equivalent to removing five cars from the road. For organizations pursuing sustainability goals, this represents tangible progress backed by measurable data.

Perhaps most tellingly, when asked if he would recommend Kress robots to other institutions, Little responds “without hesitation.” The combination of time savings, environmental benefits, and consistent turf quality creates a compelling case for adoption.

As grounds managers face mounting pressure to deliver immaculate results with constrained resources, intelligent automation offers a genuine solution. Kress robot mowers aren’t replacing skilled professionals, they’re empowering them to focus on what matters most: the specialised care that truly elevates turf management from maintenance to artistry.

The SISIS Multislit keeps top golf course in peak condition

Visby Golf Club, located on the island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea, is consistently ranked as Sweden’s number one golf course. With its spectacular coastal setting, immaculate fairways and smooth-rolling greens, it attracts golfers from across the world.

But maintaining those standards under constant pressure takes experience, dedication and the right equipment.

For nearly two decades, Course Manager Petter Lindblad has been leading Visby through the unique challenges of its coastal location. “Our biggest challenges are excess water in the low points and the heavy play pressure. We need to work effi ciently and quickly while maintaining high quality.”

That balance, keeping surfaces dry, healthy and consistently playable while meeting high demand, is why the SISIS Multislit has become such a valuable tool in Visby’s maintenance programme.

“The Multislit helps us keep the low points dry. It’s easy to use, quick to attach and we can aerate all 27 greens in around 2.5 hours. Best of all, players can be back on the course almost straight away, with very little disruption.”

The Multislit is a tractor-mounted deep slitting aerator built to tackle compaction, improve drainage, and encourage strong root growth, all vital when dealing with standing water in low-lying areas.

By moving water away from the surface, it not only improves turf health but also keeps surfaces

firmer and more playable for members and visitors alike. Its spiral tine shaft and angled tine positioning deliver deep, clean penetration with minimal surface disturbance, ensuring golfers enjoy tournament-quality conditions almost immediately after use.

Durability and serviceability are at the heart of its design. Shatterproof boron steel tines ensure long working life, while interchangeable options allow treatment to be adapted for different soil conditions.

Available in 1.2m or 1.5m working widths and with rollers fitted as standard, the Multislit delivers reliable performance even on undulating ground.

Three deals in for “best in the business” Toro at Little Aston

Little Aston Golf Club in Sutton Coldfield, one of the highest ranked parkland courses in England, has signed its third five-year agreement with Toro and Reesink Turfcare taking their partnership to 15 years.

Iain Burns, Club Manager, says the enduring relationship is down to trust in the brand: “We’re delighted to continue our excellent relationship with Toro as we believe they are the best in the business when it comes to the provision of cutting machinery.

“This marks the beginning of a third five-year term which consolidates our trust and satisfaction in the Toro brand and performance.”

In a deal worth roughly £500,000, it guarantees the club longevity, reliability, and durability for its turfcare equipment according to

Course Manager David Gibbons: “In our opinion, Toro machinery offers the best overall performance for the type of maintenance required at Little Aston Golf Club.

With no on-site mechanic, we need hard wearing machinery with a good fi nish for the level of presentation you’d expect for a top 100 England golf course.

“Our team is familiar with it –how to use and look after it, and it is robust and well made, meaning

that after five years the machinery is still in good working order and holding a good price.

“For example, we have been building bunkers, and found that the Toro Reelmaster 3100 with the SideWinder technology is the best mower for maintaining bunker banks. It really helps with the undulations and has a patented front unit sliding control for safety when near the edges.”

Duncan Ross rejuvenates school sports field

Broughton High School is ecstatic that the school field, which has been closed for eight years due to a large hole appearing, has finally seen extensive works carried out by Duncan Ross Ltd, bring it back to life and with it, extending the fantastic sporting facilities on offer.

Over the course of the last year, Lancashire County Council brought in drainage specialists Duncan Ross who were able to suggest a lasting solution and action the change over the summer holiday period.

Duncan Ross initiated a thorough investigation, utilising site knowledge and aerial imagery to pinpoint the fault. The team traced the issue to a broken main drain, which was likely damaged years earlier

when heavy vehicles became bogged down on the pitch. Since then, the old network of drains beneath the surface had silted up beyond repair. The clear choice was to replace the entire system.

The company specified a comprehensive scheme, installing carrier, main, and lateral drains at fivemetre centres. Inspection chambers, junctions, and

outfalls were included for ease of future maintenance.

Once installed, the field received a full programme of post-drainage operations including decompaction to relieve construction compaction, sand topdressing to improve infiltration and surface regularity, overseeding for density, and targeted fertiliser applications to drive establishment.

The key to healthier playing surfaces

The real measure of irrigation quality and the biggest factor affecting turf health and resource efficiency is uniformity.

Manager of International Golf Sales for KAR UK & Van Den Borne Wesley Henshaw discusses the importance of irrigation uniformity.

Uniformity, measured as Distribution Uniformity (DU), describes how evenly water is applied across the irrigated area. A DU of 100% would mean every square metre receives exactly the same amount of water. In reality, factors like wind, pressure variation, nozzle design, and sprinkler layout mean there’s always some variation but the higher the DU, the better.

“Low uniformity forces you to run sprinklers longer to ensure the driest spots get enough water. This overwatering of the rest of the area wastes water, increases pumping costs,

and can create softer playing conditions, disease risk, and nutrient leaching,” he said.

“Many believe that sprinkler performance is simply about distance, if one head’s throw reaches another, coverage is ‘good’. In truth, sprinklers cannot achieve good uniformity if installed in a straight line. Overlapping spray patterns need to be arranged in a square or triangular pattern to blend evenly. Think of it like painting with a spray can, you don’t get a consistent coat by making single passes; you need overlapping passes at the right angles.”

Independent distribution audits have repeatedly shown that the Hunter TTS-800 Series delivers the highest uniformity in the industry, a claim no other brand can make. In real-world UK and international conditions, including challenging wind, these sprinklers have demonstrated massive performance improvements over older systems.

The Hunter G85 Riser is an excellent example of how design drives performance. Distribution testing produces a DU benchmark few can match, especially under windy conditions. The precise nozzle engineering means water is delivered evenly where it’s needed, not lost to drift or overapplication. With the Hunter TTS-800 Series, you’re investing in the highest uniformity on the market, proven water and energy savings, and robust performance in real UK conditions.

Maximising versatility with the Terra Spike GXi8 HD

Romford Golf Club in Essex has relied on its Wiedenmann

Terra Spike GXi8 HD for deep aeration since 2018, and Course Manager Antony Kirwan says it’s now integral to the club’s maintenance programme.

“The GXi8 is exceptionally versatile,” says Antony Kirwan.

“We use it across every surface — tees, greens, aprons, and fairways. Its quick forward motion and range of tine sizes mean we can adapt it precisely to what we need at different times of the year.

“We use it in conjunction with a pedestrian aerator, and its efficiency allows us to cover 13 or 14 greens in an eight-hour shift, finishing the remainder the next morning.”

Romford’s course is mostly flat, but Antony Kirwan says that even the uneven areas pose no problem.

“We’ve a couple of areas that still have ridge and furrow from when it was farmland,” he explains, “but it breezes over them and doesn’t fluctuate or miss a beat.”

Antony Kirwan particularly values the speed of the GXi8 when aerating fairways. “We have to close holes during this work, so it’s essential the machine is both quick and efficient to minimise disruption

and get golfers back out as soon as possible,” he adds. “It’s easily the fastest machine for the job.”

That efficiency carries through to how the tines are used. New sets start on the fairways, and once they’ve worn down, they’re still appropriate for use on the greens for the next set of renovations — helping the team get the most out of every set.

Romford’s aeration programme has evolved since the GXi8’s arrival: fairways are treated two or three times in winter, while in March the greens are aerated to a depth of around 175 mm. Greens also receive scheduled renovations and three summer passes with 10 mm tines, and tees, aprons, and surrounds are maintained during seasonal windows.

The mid-season renovation includes a scarify, topdressing, a spike at around 150 mm depth, seeding with bent, and a light roll — a process that keeps the greens healthy, smooth, and consistent throughout the season. This approach improves soil health by letting air, water, and nutrients reach the root zone, keeping the course in championship condition.

Top results at Woolley Park thanks to Redexim

Woolley Park Golf Club in Wakefield has long been a family-run facility built on pride, passion, and constant improvement - and Course Manager John Rowbottom believes one piece of machinery has raised their maintenance standards more than most: the Redexim Top Brush 6000.

Introduced in 2020 as a solution for everything from disease control and surface preening to pre-cut preparation and topdressing integration, the Top Brush 6000 has since become a fixture at forward-thinking turf facilities around the world. And since investing in one of the first units in 2022, Woolley Park Golf Club has never looked back.

“I was thinking purely autumn and spring use pre-mowing to clear worm casts, reduce mess and prevent damage to

Keeping Blenheim Palace pristine

The grounds management team at Blenheim Palace returned to MAJOR again to replace an older Trideck roller mower with new MJTDR-610.

Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, is more than a historic estate - it’s a living landscape, meticulously maintained to preserve its grandeur.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Britain’s most celebrated examples of Baroque architecture, its 12,000 acre grounds include over 2,000 acres of formal gardens, parkland and lakes, that must be kept in pristine condition year-round for the million-plus visitors who come to experience its splendour.

The task falls to a dedicated team, including Forestry and Cultivation Manager Rob Burgess and estate maintenance worker Charlie Gerring. They care for around 300 acres of grassland, mowing up to 150 acres weekly for 35–40 weeks a year. “Visitors expect the front of the palace to look pristine,” says Charlie. “It’s a palace, so it should look like a palace.”

For nearly a decade, the team relied on a Major 6.1m TDR mower, valued for its sharp, clean finish and reliability. After nine years of service, it was time for a replacement - and the choice was clear: another Major TDR, purchased

machinery,” he explains. “But it’s turned out to be far more than that. The level of presentation we now get on a day-to-day basis is unreal. It’s not just helping with the problem - it’s improving how the course looks.”

With its three independently adjustable poly brush units and a 6-metre working width, the Top Brush 6000 can quickly and evenly sweep large areas, removing moisture, worm casts, surface debris and more. The result? A clean, healthy sward with improved airflow and reduced disease pressure.

“We’re running it on the fairways at least two out of the three times a week we cut them. It stands the grass up beautifully before mowing, helps us remove moisture, and just lifts the overall finish of the course.”

The Top Brush 6000 is designed for turf managers who need performance without compromise. The hydraulic brushes can be rotated in either direction, meaning operators can choose whether to brush with or against the direction

of travel - ideal for tasks like leaf clearance or removing pine needles in tree-lined areas.

Despite its size, the Top Brush 6000 was built with usability in mind. Its folding wings allow for compact

storage, while easy adjustments and intuitive controls mean any team member can use it with confidence.

Whether it’s the improved presentation, increased machine longevity, or the ability to tackle

through trusted supplier Farol.

“We wouldn’t look anywhere else for a mower,” Charlie says. “The service from Major and Farol is excellent - they’re always a phone call away.”

The new TDR builds on its predecessor’s strengths, with galvanised steel decks for rust resistance, a simplified folding mechanism and a blade system that delivers consistent results. Its gearboxes cut consistently, even in wet conditions, and with no belts to maintain, upkeep is minimal. Paired with a John Deere 6120M tractor (120HP), it handles steep banks and tight spaces with ease.

For Rob, the reward is in the results: “I get satisfaction from looking back after I’ve finished mowing and seeing nice straight lines.” With reliable machinery and skilled hands, Blenheim Palace will continue to shine - one pass of the mower at a time.

Improve drainage, enhance nutrient uptake and encourage stronger root and shoot growth on even the most compacted ground with our range of core, linear and spike aerators.

A course transformed with OAS at Inverurie Golf Club

When Stuart Donald took on the role of Head Greenkeeper at Inverurie Golf Club in April 2024, he faced immediate challenges.

“The greens were full of thatch with a shallow black layer,” he recalls. “The course needed remedial work and a clear longterm strategy to improve turf health and playability.”

Stuart was able to draw on a programme he had used successfully at his previous club in Knebworth, Hertfordshire, which relied on advice and products from Headland Amenity.

Since Headland’s integration into Origin Amenity Solutions, he has continued that approach, benefiting from the same trusted

technical advice and a broader range of science-led products. “The continuity of support and products has made a real difference here too,” he says.

Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS) is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of products and expertise for professional turf management. OAS combines decades of experience with innovative research to deliver healthier, more resilient and sustainable surfaces, providing the technical support and product range that enabled Stuart to implement his programme with confi dence.

Within just a year, progress at Inverurie Golf Club has been remarkable. Stuart has overseen

a reduction of around 30mm of thatch, which has reduced the black layer to encourage better rooting. He has successfully implemented a tree management plan that includes gorse reduction to aid better airflow and increase sunlight for the turf, alongside the construction of new ditches to dry out the course more quickly in the winter months.

Stuart’s course maintenance regime relies on a suite of proven OAS products. “We use ProTec Plus and Seamac, which really helps the turf recover and stay healthy,” he explains.

“Seamac Proturf Fe, Liquid Turf Hardener and Turfite Elite form part of our 20-20-30 tank mix, which we use in conjunction with Mantle and

PPT114 to reduce the reliance on fungicides. I am planning for future years when we might not have the option of using fungicides due to ongoing restrictions.

“Tri-Cure and TerraFirm complete our programme by improving air-to-water ratios in the soil, to improve soil and root health.

“The results have been very encouraging. Better greens, improved grass coverage and more effective tree management. It’s all starting to show, members have noticed it too, with feedback on truer, smoother putting surfaces.”

MM Tetrasport proves its strength

When the Women’s Rugby World Cup came to town, the pitches at Towcestrians Sports Club needed to perform at the highest level.

deck

• Designed to work in the toughest conditions

• Masters of steep slopes

Head Groundsman Tommy Waldock turned to a product he knew he could trust - MM Tetrasport - and the results spoke for themselves.

The club’s growing reputation was further boosted when it was chosen as an official training centre for the Women’s Rugby World Cup, hosting both Ireland and France for pretournament preparations.

Having first used MM Tetrasport during his time at the Ricoh Arena, Tommy knew it was the right choice for Towcestrians’ demanding rugby surfaces.

MM Tetrasport is designed for fast germination, rapid establishment, and outstanding wear tolerance - qualities that have proved vital under the heavy demands of rugby training and matches. Treated with Headstart ® GOLD, it delivers

strong performance from the off, while the tetraploid ryegrasses provide resilience and excellent colour all year round.

“The recovery is unbelievable,” says Tommy. “You can have 40-odd players out there, and by the time you give the pitch a brush and a cut after training, you wouldn’t even know they’d been on it. I’ve never known a seed regenerate like it - it just keeps coming.”

For the Rugby World Cup preparation, Tommy followed a ProPitch specification involving deep scarification and reseeding with MM Tetrasport at 45g/m

“We pulled out a lot of old bent grass, did a four-way scarification, and used nine bags of Tetrasport per pitch. The seed was up in six days - we saw the first signs of growth that quickly. We also applied a pre-seed feed after five days to help it along. It was flat-out from there - it just didn’t stop growing.”
