Landscape & Amenity Product Update April 2025

Page 1

It is our annual focus on the Best of British this month and as always there is plenty of reason to celebrate across the wider industry.

We highlight the success stories of British companies active in a wide range of sectors, from hard landscaping to play manufacturers and through to those serving groundscare and greenkeeping teams.

At a time of continuing economic uncertainty and serious challenges, the industry remains resilient and retains a major influence, even if it is rarely recognised at government level. It is always refreshing to see what a diverse range of homegrown manufacturers and specialists we have that boast a global presence.

It is also fitting that this month we have special features on Sports Turf Maintenance and Pedestrian & Remote Mowers, two areas where the UK has a world-leading reputation. We show how technology is shaping the mower market, with battery power changing the pedestrian machines and robotics coming to the fore with new professional standard systems. The sports turf feature again shows how UK companies lead the way in creating international class surfaces.

Elsewhere this month we also take a look at Soils & Treatments and Water Management.

There is our regular look at the latest news, views and case studies in Hard & Soft Landscaping and the Machinery sector.

Last month the GMA celebrated #GroundsWeek 2025, another celebration of the positive impact that industry enjoys.

Highlighting the best of Britain is a year-round exercise, but it is good to put a special spotlight on the industry’s achievements every now and then.

Have a good month everyone.

Search begins for top landscaping and garden design students

The application window for this year’s BALI Chalk Fund Top Student of the Year Awards 2024/2025 has opened.

This week, landscape, design, landbased and horticultural specialist college tutors will be receiving full details of how students can apply, the key dates and deadlines, useful links for online applications and further information.

The BALI Chalk Fund Trustees are looking to celebrate and showcase the landscaping sector’s future leading lights. The Awards will champion our most promising Landscapers, Horticulturists and Garden Designers who are

completing their training and academic courses at land-based and horticultural colleges and training providers across the country.

Student or apprentice applicants (Level 2 and above) will have until Friday 11 April 2025 to complete and submit. This year, students can submit their application online by visiting the BALI Chalk Fund.

The application is the student’s opportunity to share what they have learned both vocationally and academically, how they have applied these skills in employment or training opportunities and which aspects of the course have interested them the most.

In one simple online form and short, under-100 word answers, there is the chance to win £100 as each college’s Top Student.

Those nominated will then be entered into the National Student of the Year (Landscape and Garden Design Categories) with the chance to be selected as the overall winners.

These winners, notified in Autumn 2025, will be invited to attend the British Association of Landscape Industries National Landscape Awards, held in London and attended by over 1000 cross-sector landscape professionals.

The overall Winners (one in each category: Landscaping or Garden Design) will each receive £500 – and their college or training provider receives the same.

But much more important than any financial reward is the potential to promote young talent, their skills and for the respect and appreciation gained from industry peers at the highest level. And all of this comes with the backing and potential exposure across landscape platforms supported by BALI, the BALI Chalk Fund Champions and Trustees.

Kubota delivers five-star contribution

Trevornick Holiday Park were recently awarded the title of ‘Holiday Park of the Year’ at the prestigious AA Caravan and Camping Awards – an accolade they attribute to a momentous ‘team effort’ across the site.

Part of that team, supporting both the maintenance and grounds operations, is a fleet of equipment from Kubota which the venue has praised for its versatility, productivity and robust reliability.

Having initially worked in the hospitality side of the park, Ross made the switch to the grounds team and adopted the head role 12 years ago.

“One of the first things I did was get a demonstration of some new cut and collect mowers, including the G-Series from Kubota.

“The superior cutting deck, build quality and ease of use of the G261 won me over straight away” he explains.

“Mowing is the primary maintenance task we undertake so we quickly added a second Kubota G261 to the fleet and these two now cut every blade of grass on our site.”

Alongside the two Kubota G261’s, is a B1241 compact tractor complete with tipping trailer. “This tractor is used for everything - moving machinery, transporting soil and materials and collecting rubbish, hedge trimmings, branches, the list goes on,” he adds.

“The most recent purchase was two new Kubota RTV 520’s, joining two larger RTV 900’s we were already using.

“These are the go-to for us and the maintenance team anytime we need to get people or materials around the site and, in my mind, can’t be beaten for the power and performance they give us.”

Sport England warns about danger to playing fields from planning changes

The Government has announced plans for the removal of Sport England’s role as statutory consultee on planning applications.

Sport England said the purpose of the statutory planning remit is to protect playing fields and community spaces for sport and physical activity.

Responding to the publication of the Bill, chief executive Tim Hollingsworth said: “We understand the Government’s priority around housebuilding and the need to stimulate growth. However, it is vital we balance this with the need to

keep a nation moving – and the places and spaces that currently support sport and activity in our community.

“We therefore look forward to working constructively with Government through the consultation to seek to achieve these aims.

“History shows us that without effective action taken to protect playing fields, we will see vital facilities lost, particularly often in those areas that are already least well served.

“Once you lose a playing field or pitch, it’s gone forever.

“With more than half our playing fields in this country within school grounds, and with a child obesity crisis and £7.4billion lost to the economy each year to inactivity, it’s essential we get the balance right ensure any future legislation continues to protect the facilities base in this country.”

In December 2024, it released statistics showing that in its role as a statutory consultee, 94% of all concluded planning applications involving playing fields result in the protection or improvement of facilities.

It meant Sport England protected more than 1,000

playing fields between April 2022 and March 2023. The annual playing field statistics show it protected 1,007 in the year to March 2023, continuing its commitment to protecting and enhancing playing fields across England.

Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “We are committed to delivering government investment in grassroots multi-sport facilities. We also recognise and support the ambition of the government to drive economic growth through development but believe this should not

be to the detriment of quality sport facilities and the nation’s ability to get active and healthy.

“Reform of the planning system should be focused on expediting the process, allowing for greater certainty for all developers, including the Football Foundation, as we seek to improve community sports facilities across England. We look forward to engaging in the consultation process in due course.”

Sprayers are getting stronger

The biggest names in the backpack sprayer market are Cooper Pegler and Berthoud.

They are both iconic brands and trace their evolution in spraying back over 125 years so they are well used to bumps in the economic and legislative landscape.

Today they sit as top brands in the huge Exel Industries – which also boasts agricultural sprayers and tractors too.

The last few years have certainly thrown a few major bumps in the way; with rising material prices, labour costs not to mention the odd war or pandemic thrown in to upset the balance.

So 2025 has given us all a nice surprise by starting off - almost over the whole of the UK and Ireland, with a decent start to the landscape season with warm temperatures, decent rainfall and the beginnings of rampant plant growth – ssshhh don’t jinx it I can hear you say.

Both Cooper Pegler & Berthoud are at the forefront of handheld sprayers in different branches of the agricultural and horticultural landscape. From lawncare, landscaping and commercial growers to farming and pesticide training the trusted brands prove their worth with high reliability great build quality and an extensive offering of parts and accessories.

Berthoud pioneered the unique Comfort Harness that is clinically proven to reduce user fatigue and is a big favourite in the lawn care industry while Cooper Pegler have offered their diaphragm technology as a trusted no -nonsense method of knapsack operation.

Ventrac can offer effective solutions

For landscaper contractors, the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor and its myriad of attachments is ideal for major landscaping projects where significant areas have to be cleared. From the initial site preparation to the later stages of preparing the ground for planting or hard landscaping, Ventrac has an attachment that will suit most tasks.

A deck drainage system, such as Trex RainEscape, will protect the space beneath decking – by keeping it dry, ensuring moisture never builds up beneath it or within the supporting studwork - creating a functional storage space.

Once protected from the elements, this new space can be used for storing bikes, lawnmowers, gardening tools, patio furniture and other outdoor essentials. Or, if used as an additional living space it could be fitted with everything from furniture and decorative accessories to televisions, speakers, lights and heaters.

The wiring for these components is hidden between the deck surface and the soffit ceiling.

Once clear of obstructions the soil can prepared using the Tiller, Power Rake or Landscape

Rake and then prepared for final planting with the Soil Cultivator, which effectively buries rocks and stones before utilising the Primary Seeder, which plants any type of seed directly into the soil with a consistent and accurate drop rate.

If it’s necessary to lay power cables or irrigation pipe, then the Trencher can reach a depth of one metre. For more general tasks, there’s a Tough Cut deck for clearing scrub, brambles and thickets, a Sod Cutter for lifting turf and an Edger for maintaining pristine driveways.

Attraxor for end-of-season protection

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) play a significant role in a groundsman’s arsenal when it comes to implementing maintenance strategies to improve turf.

The correct course of treatment over the winter months can provide protection, as well as a reduction in Poa annua. The unique formula of Attraxor makes it possible for turf care professionals to meet these needs effectively.

Attraxor can be used to regulate the growth of all managed amenity turf, for example, golf courses, sports pitches and training grounds, at a rate of 375 — 1,500 g/ha. Root growth is promoted, and turf colour and quality are maintained.

A lack of sunlight in the winter months can lead to an increase in Poa because the thinning grass can give way to Poa in the spring

which can cause ongoing issues in maintenance.

Less light, thinning turf and then the added element of Poa means the turf becomes very high maintenance. With all of this happening throughout the winter when pitches are heavily used, this means that maintenance regimes are tough going.

Attraxor contains prohexadionecalcium, an active ingredient that regulates growth and also limits the spread of Poa annua by reducing seed-head production. It weakens the Poa, while strengthening the sward and improving density.

Contrary to other plant growth regulators that need to be activated by the plant enzymes, Attraxo can be used later in the season during cooler weather (optimal temperature between 7-20°C).

A low-cost alternative to synthetic fertilisers

An innovative project which aims to provide a sustainable, environmentally friendly nutrient management solution is underway following a partnership between industry experts.

The project, called ‘Biofilm Biofertiliser’, will develop a novel multi-species biofilm-based biofertiliser product that reduces the use of synthetic fertilisers by 40-50%.

By utilising a unique consortium of UK indigenous biofilmforming plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), which is tailored to UK soils, it will improve soil quality and plant/crop health, resulting in 20-30% higher yields.

Formulation types include water-dispersible granules (WDG) and encapsulated

options, which aims to improve nutrient availability, enhance soil health and foster a stable biofilm with a targeted minimum shelf life of up to 24 months.

Following funding from the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK, the project is being led by a consortium of partners including lead partner, Bionema Group, a global leader in biocontrol technology development operating a Centre of Excellence and Technology Platform in biological formulation; CPI, responsible for the process development and production of samples for the UK field trials, and the UK Agri-Tech Centre, responsible for project management and dissemination/exploitation ensuring awareness raising and end-user engagement.

As part of this project, three growers will be provided with a nutrient management solution which offers a low-cost alternative to synthetic fertilisers, improved soil and plant health, increased crop yields by 2030% and a reduced nutrient run-off.

Additionally, the innovative biofilm-based biofertiliser will be produced and manufactured in the UK, reducing reliance on imports from global suppliers.

Fiata Stressgard backed by new STRI trial results

Fiata Stressgard, from Envu and distributed by Origin Amenity Solutions, is now available in convenient 10L packs.

This allows for more flexible application rates of 15 or 20L/ha, making it easier for turf managers to incorporate into their agronomic programmes.

A recent independent trial by the Sports Turf Research Institute (STRI) confirmed Fiata Stressgard’s ability to improve turf resilience, colour, and quality, even during a six-week drought. The study also showed that Fiata Stressgard enhances photosynthesis, outperforming both untreated plots and those treated with pigment alone.

Additionally, the research found that combining Fiata Stressgard with the growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl reduces potential quality issues often associated with trinexapac-ethyl alone. This combination further boosted chlorophyll levels in both drought-stressed and healthy turf, supporting plant health under various conditions.

Notably, the trial demonstrated that during drought conditions, Fiata Stressgard was a better option than continuing with turf wetting agent programme alone. While turf wetting agents are essential before and after drought, using Fiata Stressgard before and during dry periods helped maintain turf quality and improved recovery afterward. Since its UK launch, Fiata Stressgard has received excellent feedback from turf managers, who report improved turf quality, enhanced colour, and greater stress resilience.

The

Phil Logan, UK Turf Manager at Envu, commented: “The new STRI trial results reaffirm the multiple benefits of Fiata Stressgard. Not only does it improve plant health and drought tolerance, but it also complements trinexapac-ethyl applications, making it an excellent addition to any turf management programme.”

Mark De Ath, PPP Team Lead at Origin Amenity Solutions, added: “The research highlights Fiata Stressgard’s role in modern turf management. Its ability to support plant health, particularly in drought conditions, provides a practical and reliable solution for maintaining high-quality playing surfaces.”

Looking ahead, the full launch of Fiata Stressgard in 2025 will include a webinar, regional seminars, and dedicated support from Origin Amenity Solutions to help turf managers maximise its benefits.

Major CS Pro Mower expands sports turf services for business

James Pask, founder of Greenstripe Groundcare, initially focused on residential lawn care across Lincolnshire.

Five years ago, Barrowby Football Club approached him for pitch maintenance, as their existing service used cylinder mowers, which couldn’t cut in damp weather. Lacking the right equipment, James declined but saw potential in sports and amenity work.

A year later, the club returned, prompting James to invest in a reliable mower—if they

guaranteed the contract. After testing various models, he chose the Major CS Pro 3m mower from his dealer Fentons of Bourne and paired it with an ISEKI 6507 tractor.

The Major CS Pro mower is a gear-driven rotary mower with four cut and mulch blades per rotor, which overlap to ensure all materials are finely cut and dispersed across the width of the machine. The height of cut can be adjusted to between 15mm and 100mm. The machine’s ability to mulch clippings and leave a striped finish, combined with its

durability, made it the perfect fit for Greenstripe Groundcare.

Starting in September 2022, James transformed Barrowby’s 10-acre site. The CS Pro’s adjustable rollers tackled uneven terrain without scalping, and its Strenx™ 700MC structural steel construction ensured durability despite wet weather. The mower’s level of work output to cost of operation and ease of transport between jobs further boosted productivity.

The results delighted the club, which appointed James as

Pitch Improvement Officer. His work has not only enhanced the quality of Barrowby’s football pitches and cricket squares but also attracted new customers. With reduced maintenance costs and increased efficiency, James’ business turnover has doubled, solidifying the CS Pro as a gamechanging investment.

“If you need a reliable mower for undulating ground, from racecourses to public parks, the Major CS Pro is unmatched,” says James.

Trilo C12 delivers high productivity

With a decision made to reduce grass cutting on around 75 sites across the borough, came the necessity to purchase a more durable and efficient cut and collect set-up for the team at Walsall Council.

The solution - a high-capacity C12 unit from Trilo. Delivered in the autumn of 2024, the Trilo was swiftly put to task, making light work of the mowing and clean collection of wildflower areas and other green spaces, all while reducing labour and fuel requirements too.

Working closely with supporting dealers F R

Sharrock, Andrew Stokes, Principle Operations Manager for Walsall Council, and the team looked at the Trilo C12, with its robust steel fabrication and heavy-duty flail head designed to cope with the most demanding cut and collect tasks.

Boasting noise reduction, dust suppression and a 12m 3 hydraulically controlled hopper, the C12 was the right choice to deliver both the quality and quantity of mowing the council were looking for.

Golf Course Superintendent

Scott McLean, a key figure in turf management at Quinta do Lago, has introduced innovative equipment like the Air2G2 and other tools such as from Campey Turf Care Systems to ensure top-notch course conditions.

The Air2G2 was chosen for its ability to inject compressed air into the soil, creating fractures and channels that enhance water percolation and root growth.

“The introduction of the Air2G2 proved to be a game-changer for Quinta do Lago.” Said Scott, “The equipment’s unique ability to aerate the soil without damaging the turf surface enabled our greens team to maintain the playing conditions throughout the year.

“Our priority was to minimise surface disruption, while getting deep into the soil to break up the compacted layers.

a year, depending on the weather conditions, and during this process, we remove old, wornout, or damaged sod and restore the playing field within a day.”

Another advantage of using the machine is the savings in labour costs. “Thanks to the FTM 1.2, we were able to streamline our staffing. The budget freed up by this is now in-vested in highquality sod for repairs. “This has led to a noticeable improvement in quality – all while maintaining the same budget.”

With the Field Top Maker FTM 1.2, the city of Lucerne is committed to sustainable and re-source-efficient maintenance of its green spaces and playing fields to continue providing high-quality recreational areas for its citizens.

Attraxor powers turf success for golf club

Simon Grand, Course Manager at North Foreland Golf Club in Kent, has reported impressive results from using BASF’s Attraxor, a plant growth regulator recommended and supplied by Agrovista Amenity.

This year, Simon decided to trial BASF’s Attraxor plant growth regulator: “I’d read positive studies and listened to feedback about the product from other users, particularly its seed head suppression and disease management benefits. The buzz around it grew to the point where I had to see for myself,” he said.

Attraxor is designed to reduce vertical grass growth while promoting lateral spread and

tillering. This leads to a denser turf with improved playability and less frequent mowing, freeing up valuable time for other maintenance tasks. The product is especially beneficial for suppressing seed head production and can play a role in disease management.

Simon’s first application on the Northcliffe course was in early spring. “We applied it at the full rate during a mild March. The results were immediate. Within the first few weeks, we noticed significantly reduced growth leading to less leaf removal when cutting and more consistent putting surfaces.

“I definitely noticed a reduction in seed head as well, when normally

they would have been very prevalent at that time of year. There was also a major decrease in disease considering the conditions we were facing. After the initial application we are generally applying it every three weeks and have continued to do so ever since.”

The results impressed Simon enough to integrate Attraxor into the main course maintenance plan later in the summer. The positive results from the initial trials have encouraged Simon to explore Attraxor’s use on tees, aprons, and even bunker faces as time and conditions allow.

J 4Turf 50 proves the versatile choice

One of the UK’s most prominent sports pitch contractors has praised J 4Turf 50 from the Johnsons Sports Seed range for the pivotal role it plays in the renovations of a range of turf surfaces.

White Horse Contractors note the versatility of the 50/50 tetraploid and perennial ryegrass blend, which has delivered reliable results and season-long performance at facilities across the country.

Chris Last joined White Horse as Technical Manager just over a year ago and brought his relationship with Johnsons Sports Seed - and firm belief in the DLF 4turf tetraploid variety - with him!

“I had used J 4Turf in my previous role and had the opportunity to experience the benefits they bring to winter sports pitches first-hand” he explains. “It wasn’t long before the White Horse team saw this

for themselves and quickly had the confidence to employ J 4Turf 50 in a number of our projects.”

With the ever-increasing pressure on turf managers to produce top quality surfaces suitable for year-round play, DLF’s unique 4turf tetraploid ryegrass provides the solution for the sports turf market. With exceptional disease resistance, superior drought tolerance and reduced requirements for water and fertiliser, 4turf ® mixtures are the sustainable choice and are available in 25, 50 and 100% formulations within the Johnsons Sports Seed range.

Chris adds, “In addition, deep rooting was evident on all of the sites we used the mixture on during the summer of 2024, which is even more important when it comes to establishing a sward on a primary or secondary drainage line.”

East Kilbride chooses ISEKI compact tractor

East Kilbride Golf Club, in South Lanarkshire, has added an ISEKI 50 hp TG6507 compact tractor to its fleet from dealer Fairways GM at Inchinnan.

Head greenkeeper, Scott Reid, said the TG6507 was so good at demo that it was a straightforward choice.

Scott, who has been in post since 2019 and with the club since 2001, has a team of five

at the busy parkland course. They selected the CX forks and the front bucket options and took delivery at the end of January, with Fairways GM’s, Area Sales Manager, Stuart Cameron providing sales support throughout.

“Extra horsepower was something we were after, too; our attachments and implements are compatible, but now, we are future proofed,” he said.

Ventrac and attachments help protect the bottom line

The Ventrac 4520 has four different mowing decks that will appeal to the sports turf manager and with a unique coupling system, the experienced operator can switch between options in less than one minute.

The MU720 1.83M (72”) rear discharge rotary has been very popular along with the MK960 2.41m (95”) rear discharge Wide Area offering a full width rear roller for a flat area striped finish. The rotary MJ840 Contour Mower, features a 2.13 metre (83 inch) working width.

Three rear discharge decks float independently and follow

the contours of the terrain with up to 40 degrees of motion for each side deck. Full length rear rollers facilitate even cutting and striping. All decks feature flip-up design for easy maintenance.

The MR740 Triplex Reel Mower is designed to be the ultimate trim and surround mower.

With a 1.88 metre (74 inch) width of cut, variable speed hydraulics, standard back lapping valves, and offset capability. When fitted to the all-wheel drive Ventrac 4500 tractor with dual wheels, the MR740 can be operated on hills and slopes up to 30 degrees - allowing the operator

to go where few other reel mowers can go.

Compaction can be a problem on regularly used sports turf, but Ventrac has the ideal solution. The AERA-vator attachment is designed to vibrate and loosen the soil beneath the grass without damaging the turf.

It creates a hole without bringing a core to the surface, leaving the turf ready for use immediately following aeration. An optional overseeder is available increasing efficiency in one pass.

Terra Spike XD8 is vital to horse safety

Just over a year ago, Cork Racecourse, at Mallow in southern Ireland, took delivery of a Wiedenmann Terra Spike XD8, deep aerator to help with yearround preparation of their track. The XD8 was supplied by Michael Weldon from local Wiedenmann UK dealer Seamus Weldon’s of Killarney. According to Cork’s General Manager, Eoghan O’Grady, the XD8 has performed exactly as hoped.

“It’s used regularly across the calendar by our team of five and we find it does a really good job. Immediately after racing, a prearranged crowd of back fillers take to the course to back fill all the damage done during the meeting to the turf by the horses’ hooves. They carry buckets of rootzone and seed mix to repair the divots. Once repaired, and conditions allowing, we go out with the Terra Spike, using the widest possible diameter tines, so 20 mm or 25 mm, going

as deep as we can to decompact the course. Regular terra spiking lets air, water and nutrients permeate through the profile and it improves the quality of the grass plant and noticeably helps drainage.

“It’s so important the track is safe for horses and riders. We want healthy and plentiful grass coverage that provides a good cushion for the horses’ feet. We don’t want the surface to be hard. The Terra Spike is a vital piece of kit.”

York Racecourse looks to the future

The award-winning grounds team at York Racecourse have gained two new recruits, in the form of an Echo TM-1050 and Echo TM-2050 robotic mower from GroundTech.

In the few shorts weeks since their delivery, the pair have been well received by Head Groundsman Adrian Kay as well as visitors to site who have commented that the enclosures and other perimeter areas have never presented better at this time of year.

Switching to battery power was also a strategic choice, aligning with the club’s environmental goals. As the first Scottish football club to join the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, Hibernian is deeply committed to sustainability. “When I first started, Hibs had recently won an award for being the greenest football club in Scotland, and so getting the ES-860 was a nobrainer—it aligned perfectly with that recognition.”

The ES-860 has made a considerable difference in daily routines for Steven and his team. With its low noise level, the ES-860 enables the grounds team to start work earlier without disturbing nearby residents.

“Where we store the equipment, there are adjacent houses,” says Steven. “Starting petrol mowers at 7 a.m. is challenging due to noise regulations, so having the ES-860 lets us get an early start without disturbing anyone.”

The battery life of the ES-860 is another highlight. “After a year of use, the battery performance remains exceptional. Our rule of thumb is that it should be able to handle a full pitch cut once or twice, and it consistently does that without any issues. The battery life hasn’t dipped, which is key for me.”

With a busy race season from May to October, and a calendar compromising of weddings and corporate functions, the maintenance is a year-round operation for Adrian and his team

They’ve decided to turn to technology to provide a helping hand: “We recognise that people don’t want to be working 60-70 hours per week, or at unsociable hours, much of which was attributable to the time it takes to mow our expanses of lawn.

“By investing in this pair of robotic mowers, I can redeploy my skilled team to other maintenance tasks, ensuring we can maintain presentation levels.”
