Climate change insights sought as RHS adapts its own plant collections

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), University of Sheffield and University of Reading want to hear how climate change is affecting the plants in gardens as they combine forces to help future proof them.

While warmer summers have meant gardens can accommodate a wider variety of flowering plants and some traditional favourites such as ornamental grasses, gladioli and irises are thriving, others, including

hebes and Pittosporum, are being negatively affected by the increasing number of heavy rainfall events, extreme temperatures and unpredictable frosts.

Understanding what is growing well or struggling and maintenance habits will help the researchers to make recommendations for how to manage and protect plant diversity across the country. Information will also be used to identify what plants might thrive here in the future.

RHS Gardens are already adapting to changes in the weather. Heat loving banana and lotus have flowered at RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Yorkshire – something not thought to have been possible ten years ago – and Lagerstroemia originating from

South East Asia has been trialled successfully at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey.

However, plants from the heather and Hepatica national collections also based at Wisley are being duplicated and grown across other sites because of vulnerability to drought and the potential for loss. Vegetable trials replicated across all five gardens have also shown the difference in performance in the north, south and south west.

Tim Upson, Director of Gardens and Horticulture at the Royal Horticultural Society, said: “In a garden, plant diversity is everything and our extensive collections provide some insight into what grows well from year to year and from place to place.”

Attraxor’s long lasting impact at Cheltenham College

Cheltenham College, a prestigious independent school with a rich history, prides itself on immaculate grounds that reflect its high standards. Central to maintaining these exceptional grounds is Christian Brain, Head of Grounds and his knowledgeable team.

For the past decade, Christian has called upon Agrovista Amenity for expert advice and products, and in recent years, Attraxor has become a crucial tool in his turf management arsenal.

Attraxor is a plant growth regulator exclusively available in the UK from Agrovista Amenity. It contains prohexadione calcium, which

effectively manages the growth of amenity turf. By inhibiting the gibberellic acid pathway, Attraxor reduces turf height and biomass while promoting root growth and maintaining turf colour and quality. Its innovative formulation allows for fast leaf absorption, delivering almost instant results and offering flexibility in application timing, even during cooler weather.

Christian’s journey with Attraxor began a few years ago, thanks to a recommendation from Ray Hunt from Agrovista Amenity.

“I first used Attraxor a few years ago. Ray suggested I give it a try, and I’ve had good results from it ever since,” Christian recalls. His application strategy is both

efficient and effective, tailored to fit the busy schedule of an independent school.

Christian typically applies Attraxor in mid-May when the weather has improved, and the growing season is in full swing. He mixes Attraxor with fertiliser in three tanks to cover the 3-hectare main college field. “It helps reduce poa seedheads, which is great, and at that time of the year, the grass is growing a lot, so it helps to get a lot of bulk out of it. With the added bit of nitrogen, it gives it a nice colour,” Christian explains.

The timing of the application is crucial, coinciding with

He said understanding current experiences will increase knowledge of how gardens need to evolve to ensure they continue to provide the environmental and health and wellbeing benefits we currently enjoy in the future.

The RHS published Gardening in a Changing Climate in 2017 in collaboration with the University of Reading and University of Sheffield. It highlights the importance of gardens in terms of their interaction with the natural environment and provides recommendations on how gardeners can adapt to climate change through plant choice and garden design.

Welcome...

After another busy summer punctuated by further success within the industry – and some seriously ill-advised comments about groundscare from three leading lights of Rugby League – we head into the second instalment of GroundsFest in fairly buoyant mood.

Banter is part of the industry and long may it continue to be the case, but such ignorant comments were righty seized upon by The GMA and many others within the industry.

The three culprits would do well to make the trip to Warwickshire this month for GroundsFest and the NEC Birmingham in a few weeks’ time for SALTEX to get a much-needed education and understanding of groundscare in the UK and the high standing it enjoys around the world – if they don’t mind putting up with a bit of “banter” from visitors to both events.

It isn’t just groundscare that suffers from such a misunderstanding, the importance and influence of the entire industry remains a mystery to so many.

This month we have our regular Professional Groundscare supplement.

We take a look at the latest news, views and case studies from the busy sector, as well as special features on Weed & Pest Control, Artificial Turf Maintenance and Sweepers, Collectors, Blowers & Vacs.

In the rest of the issue there is a spotlight on Estate Management, Brushcutters and Winter Management. There are also the regular features on Hard & Soft Landscaping, the urban environment and the wider industry.

We will be exhibiting again at GroundsFest this month and look forward to seeing you there and enjoying the diverse mix of exhibitors, indoor displays and outdoor demonstrations, as well as the excellent networking opportunities.

Most adults unaware of full cooling power of urban trees

As cities experience hotter temperatures due to climate change, people’s health and wellbeing is being put at risk.

Trees are one of the best naturebased solutions to offer respite, yet a new national survey shows that the vast majority of UK adults (88%) underestimate or do not know the maximum cooling effect of urban trees, which can be up to 8 degrees Celsius.

Global temperature records have been broken yet again this summer, and our towns and cities are facing unchartered levels of heat.

Over 80% of the UK population live in cities which suffer more heat stress than rural areas due to the urban heat island effect, where hard surfaces like roads

and roofs retain heat and have less vegetation to provide natural cooling. Exacerbated by the effects of climate change, these high temperatures cause a host of heatrelated health issues, such as heat stroke and sudden heart attacks, often affecting the most vulnerable.

Heat-related mortality has been identified as a key risk to human health, and is on the rise.

Trees can become part of the solution to heat-related health impacts. This YouGov survey, supported by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, shows that whilst 86% of UK adults agree that trees are important to help cool our towns and cities, most either underestimate or don’t know the maximum cooling effect of urban trees, which can be

Baroness announce Lister Wilder as dealers

Baroness UK have announced the expansion of the territory area for existing dealer partners Lister Wilder.

Effective immediately, sales and support across the Baroness range will now be offered to customers in the Dorset area which will be serviced by the Lister Wilder Salisbury depot, which opened in late 2023.

The move marks a natural progression for the territory already covered by the longstanding Baroness dealer, adding the Dorset region to the counties of Gloucester, Wiltshire and across to Hampshire, Kent and London already under Lister’s remit.

Phill Hughes, Sales and Hire Director for Lister Wilder said, “We are delighted to have been appointed as Baroness dealers for Dorset following our move last year into the area with our new Salisbury branch. Having

up to 8 degrees Celsius (according to Forest Research). We operate in cities across the UK to increase awareness on the multiple benefits of urban trees.

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “We are well versed in the benefits of trees when it comes to helping wildlife thrive and the positive impact they have on our mental wellbeing. But it’s apparent that trees also have a vital role to play in helping increase the resilience of our cities to hot summers and the effects of climate change.

“I’m really pleased players of People’s Postcode Lottery are supporting Trees for Cities work with over £1 million in funding raised so far.”

The YouGov survey also highlights a disparity facing neighbourhoods across the UK in having limited access to trees and their essential benefits. The 3/30/300 rule by the Nature Based Solutions Institute states that the nearest high-quality public green space should be no less than

300 metres from home, which equates to approximately a five minute walk.

However, the survey shows that many people across the UK have to go further, with over 1 in 3 UK adults (37%) unable to access trees to help them cool down in hot weather within a

The Baroness brand has grown significantly over this time, becoming a number one choice with customers who enjoy the low cost of ownership, extended regrind schedules and outstanding quality of cut.”

“The Lister’s company logo ‘Sales with Service’ highlights the importance that we deliver good local support. We firmly believe this ethos has helped us to become both Baroness UK’s largest dealer and a key supplier to golf courses across the South. With this latest addition to our area coverage, we are looking forward to serving customers from the Kent coastline to the Bristol estuary with our network of branches providing on-site support and backup.”

Adam Butler, Baroness Sales Director added, “Expanding Lister Wilders already substantial area is yet another move to show continued growth and customer support throughout the UK – yes our machines are great but we must have equally great service to back them up! Lister Wilder’s track record in customer service is second to none and we’re very happy to be in partnership with a company that demands these high standards across the board. We also thank Highwoods for their superb efforts and all they’ve done for the brand in this area over the last few years.”

SHC Hire ensures reliability with Avant

In the competitive world of hire businesses, reputation is everything. That’s why SHC Hire, with 10 depots spread across Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Cumbria, insists on using only market-leading equipment.

For Matthew Wilson, the Managing Director of SHC Hire, choosing Avant compact loaders was a no-brainer.

“We used to have other loaders, but we were having trouble getting parts and general reliability,” Matthew explains. “Then we found Avant, and it was perfect for the job.”

Currently, SHC boasts four Avant 528’s available for hire. Part of the 500 series, these loaders offer a perfect balance of size and performance. Their compact dimensions and manoeuvrability make them ideal for a wide range of tasks, from construction to farming.

The 500 series loaders are well suited for a wide range of customer segments thanks to their power and straight forward hydraulics which is needed in many jobs. The 500 series can also lift amazingly heavy loads compared to the size of the machine. “The Avants are used for a wide range of customers,”

Matthew says. “Our builders love the 528’s because they can carry a tonne bag of sand round the back of a house, saving manpower. They can get into tight spaces too, which is beneficial for house renovations.”

Key to the Avant’s appeal is its versatility. With attachments like pallet forks and buckets, it can tackle a variety of jobs with ease. “One machine can do so many different jobs,” Matthew emphasises. “It gives us the flexibility we need because of our varied customer base.”

Matthew sources the Avant loaders through APSV, the main dealers for Avant compact loaders in the region. “We have a great relationship with Rob Atkinson and his team there,” he says. “The service and back-up we get from APSV is absolutely brilliant.”

As SHC Hire continues to grow and serve customers across the region, Avant compact loaders remain a reliable and essential part of their fleet. With their performance and support from APSV, SHC can confidently deliver on their promise of reliability and quality service.

Sound solution from Premier Forest Products

Timber specialist Premier Forest Products has further expanded its product offering with the launch of a new range of acoustic fence panels.

Manufactured in the UK, the fence panels, which have been tested and rated to achieve a noise reduction of 26 decibels (dB), are suitable for residential, commercial and public sector properties. The panels have been designed and engineered to reflect sound from motorways, roads, railways and other noisy environments, significantly reducing the impact of noise pollution.

Measuring from 1.8m high, the panels are anti-climb to deter intruders and provide an extra level of privacy for properties. The robust panels feature horizontal tongue and groove ‘V’ joint boards, which are machined from premium quality, joinery grade Scandinavian redwood. The boards are interlocked and then

paving for

Birchwood Business Park has an interconnected network of granite and sandstone paved pathways and communal pedestrian seating areas, including attractive planting zones and water features.

This is unbonded block paving (also-called ‘flexible’ paving), is the basic form of paving, where the paving blocks are laid directly on compacted sand, to which they are not bonded or bedded with cement mortar.

The blocks are butt-jointed, with no defined spacing for a jointing mortar, instead the gap is filled with fine sand. Unbound or ‘flexible’ block paving is obviously lower cost than bound paving with no built-up substructure, bedding or jointing mortars, and is widely used for larger pathways and car parks in retail and commercial areas.

However, after some years the joints needed to be cleaned out, weed growth removed, toxic weedkiller applied, and the joints refilled with sand, which can become an increasingly expensive and disruptive annual task. The paving seems to quickly become unsightly again, access must be restricted, whilst the noisy and dirty works arere carried out, generally in the Spring and Summer, when use of the areas is most popular.

An alternative approach for established and well settled block paving areas, has been developed by NCC Streetscape. This uses the unique characteristics and advantages of the latest GftK vdw 850+,2-part, epoxy resin based, paving jointing technology. This is obviously far more expensive initially in terms of the respective materials cost, than repointing with the traditional kiln dried sand.

However, over the last 10 years, with numerous and extensive field trials and test projects all around the UK, these have very clearly demonstrated that this is in fact very cost effective, as well as being a far more sustainable solution.

This is because of the dramatic increase in durability and longevity in service, due to the lack of repeat cleaning and resanding required, and no more disruption and disturbance every 1 to 3 years or so.

Birchwood Business Park in Warrington involved repointing more than 8,000 square metres in annual phases since the first field trials over the winter of 2017 were successful and showed the clear advantages of this approach.

Green-tech helps create new biodiverse woodland

Lushill Farm stands in picturesque North Wiltshire as an arable farm with limited tree cover.

This has been the focus of a significant afforestation effort led by Jonathan Ayers of Ayers Forestry Limited.

A diverse species mix of native and non-native broadleaves and conifers were planted to improve forest resilience to pests, diseases, and climate change.

Ayers Forestry Limited turned to leading landscape supplier Green-tech to source the materials they needed to support and protect a total of 22,950 trees, which included:

broadleaves - 14,700 in 1.5m Tubex tree shelters with 32mm stakes; conifers - 8,100 in 1.5m fine mesh guards with 32mm stakes; and shrubs - 150 in 60cm shrub shelters with 90cm stakes.

Tubex standard tree shelters are designed to protect young trees from wildlife while creating a microclimate that promotes healthy growth. The use of the 1.5m high option was necessitated by the presence of fallow deer in the area to ensure that the young trees are protected from browsing.

Paired with the Tubex tree shelters, the 32mm Softwood Stakes provide the necessary

Marshalls launches new, easy-fit solution

Landscaping specialist Marshalls has launched Infinia, a new range that uses the latest in concrete printing technology to create a premium look with easy installation and the durability of traditional concrete.

Harnessing over a decade of innovation, Infinia is a stylish printed concrete paver for both patios and driveways. As it is made from concrete, Infinia can be cut without specialist blades and laid in the same way as ordinary concrete or block paving, according to application.

With its easy installation, Infinia offers important time and laboursaving benefits for landscapers, but it also brings big advantages for the homeowner, particularly in terms of maintenance. Thanks to its printed surface-coated design, Infinia has a protective layer that shields the surface from stains, fading from UV light, frost and abrasion. It also protects against the possible risk of efflorescence which is sometimes experienced on the surface of concrete products and provides a slip resistance to an R11 rating.

To give homeowners choice, the Infinia range includes a collection of nine curated designs which can be used independently or together.

Each option has a minimum of 16 variations to prevent design repeats and provides a more authentic appearance. The range also benefits from excellent colour consistency between batches due to its innovative printing technology.

“Traditionally, concrete can be seen as an unattractive, budget option – especially for patios – but Infinia changes the game,” said Alice Turner, Head of Product and Campaign Marketing at Marshalls.

The HTX5300-P is a short-reach pole hedge trimmer with 53cm cutting head and excellent tool balance. The HTX5300-PA has a longer pole, plus the ability to angle the head for increased manoeuvrability. It also comes with a front loop handle, enabling the operator to use it safely for trimming above head height. An adjustable harness point ensures better comfort for a full day’s work.

Woodland Grow Natural Fertiliser is composed of UKsourced materials that replicate woodland soils, including a blend of 10-15 natural ingredients such as NPK, seaweed, blood fertiliser, lime, hoof, and horn. This 100% natural fertiliser works in harmony with nature to improve soil health and plant growth without relying on synthetic inputs.

Daniel Iddon, Founder and Director of Woodland Grow, highlights the importance of this innovation: “Woodland Grow represents a 21st-century engineered compost that replicates peat, enabling us to innovate beyond the sterile environments we’ve grown accustomed to. It enables the forestry industry to close the carbon loop of timber production by putting microbial life back into forest residues.”

Shilstone is a lovingly restored Georgian Manor House and family home set in several hundred acres of breath-taking rural countryside near Plymouth in Devon. “It’s an extraordinarily economical and cost-effective way of making lawns and other areas look fantastic,” says.

The Point is a collection of selfcatering holiday homes in the heart of picturesque Cornwall.

The family-run business includes The Point at Polzeath, where several timber-built cabins have been created which required green roofs to be installed to comply with planning regulations.

“Because we run a wedding business here everything has to look immaculate,” he said.

“We’ve got to have stripes on the main lawns and the valley has to look good; everything has to look right and that’s why we purchased a Ventrac and a selection of attachments. It has become a significant piece of equipment to maintain our grounds.” Similarly, Andrew Day, the Estate Manager at a large property in Hampshire, says his vision for the aesthetic appearance of the estate has been fulfilled with significant help from his two Ventrac allterrain compact tractors and a comprehensive selection of attachments.

“During the demonstration we put a selection of attachments through their paces in several different areas across the estate. It proved to be a very successful demo, which resulted in the purchase of two Ventrac units, four Contour mowing decks, a Tough Cut deck, an Edger, a Turbine blower, a Power bucket and an Aera-Vator. We have the versatility and flexibility to tackle a host of estate management tasks in a very effective manner.”

Wheelbarrow Landscapes provides professional landscaping and garden maintenance services throughout Cornwall. A long-term customer of Green-tech, they turned to their sales advisor George Barton for advice and expertise in supplying green roof materials.

After exploring available solutions, Wheelbarrow Landscapes opted for Greentech’s proven roof garden solutions, which included Gt RoofDrain for drainage. This is lightweight drainage layer that enables the collection and storage of water whilst providing

a continuous drainage layer across the roof structure. The core acts as a water reservoir for plant roots to access in dry periods.

Green-tree roof garden substrate was chosen for the planting scheme. It is a blend of lightweight aggregate and award-winning Green-tree topsoil, which is ideal for green roof construction projects, due to its weight, excellent waterholding capacity, optimum drainage properties and good levels of aeration.

Instead of wildflowers or a planting scheme Green Roof Sedum matting was suggested and chosen. This is a lightweight and drought-tolerant green roof vegetation option, ideal for green roofs, especially those with a shallow substrate layer,

as in this case. A Sedum Matting roof is a low-maintenance option that provides biodiversity, insulation, improves air quality in urban landscapes, and increases habitat creation.

The plants offer a variety of leaf types and flowers which creates a blend of beautiful colours and textures when planted together.

Finally, Edge Guard was supplied to retain the lightweight substrate, which was especially important in areas that were lacking upstands.

Tees, trees and happy bees – GEAs open for enties

Now celebrating it’s 30th year, the Golf Environment Awards (GEAs), including the Syngenta Operation Pollinator Award, have been promoting the incredible work of golf clubs across the UK, and internationally.

Celebrating sustainability, conservation, ecology and caring for the environment; each year golf clubs share their journey into plans and practices they have, continually encouraging wildlife and biodiversity.

STRI calculates golf courses represent 33% of the UK’s open space and, when managed properly, can significantly enhance biodiversity, conserve rare habitats, and be one of the leading sectors in promoting positive environmental practices.

“Habitats of any kind need maintenance,” advocates Stella Rixon, senior agronomic consultant at STRI Group.

“Heathland and link dunes require grazing and mowing to stop dominant species taking over.

“Greenkeepers are key to creating a mosaic of habitats and helping to encourage strong biodiversity across the courses and getting the right balance.

“At a time when golf clubs are facing rising costs of materials and fuel, there is no better time to assess what areas need minimal maintenance and let mother nature take care of the site.”

Continuous improvement and monitoring of an ecosystem is so important and can create vital

stepping stones among urbanised landscapes, she says.

“Through studies, it has been proven that golf courses are even superior to farmlands for supporting the diversity of tree species and therefore bird diversity as well.”

Nature conservation bodies are now increasing their efforts and funding into establishing ‘wildlife corridors’, which improve the capacity of species to move between remnant areas of good habitat. They have recognised golf courses as having important roles in the success of this mission. Numerous courses across the UK are involved with safeguarding rare species and re-introducing those which are declining. These incredible efforts are helping

Kubota fleet is the key to maintenance operations

A fleet of equipment from Kubota is being entrusted with ambitious improvement plans across the surfaces at Hertfordshire’s Aldenham School.

With the assistance of a pair of RTV Utility vehicles, two ride-on mowers and three tractors from Kubota’s L-Series, Grounds & Gardens Supervisor Danny Wells is well-placed to continue the development of the highly historic sports facilities across the 110-acre site.

Much of the Kubota equipment was already working hard at the school during Danny’s previous stint, and it’s this reliability and versatility –together with the fantastic back up support from local dealer George Browns Ltd – that sees the fleet expanding more in recent months.

“Our tractors are the workhorses for the vast majority of operations

we do here – whether that’s spraying feeds on the cricket outfields or hitched up with our scarifier, aerator or top dresser for mechanical maintenance on the fifteen winter sports pitches,” said Danny.”

Recently joining two Kubota L2452 compact tractors in the shed is a cabless L1-382 fitted with flotation tyres. “While we’ve only had it a matter of weeks, this has already proven to be a great bit of kit!” Danny continues,

“Our pitches are mainly claybased so can lay very wet over winter. This capable yet lightweight tractor will enable us to still get implements on the ground without causing damage.

The sustainable solutionKress RTKn robotic mowers

As sustainability becomes increasingly vital for golf courses and large turf areas, greenkeepers are seeking efficient, costeffective ways to reduce their carbon footprints.

Kress RTKn robotic mowers combine cutting-edge technology with zero-emissions to offer a comprehensive solution.

Kress RTKn mowers are setting a new benchmark in turf care by delivering unparalleled

precision and performance. These innovative machines operate quietly and without emissions, offering a greener alternative to traditional petrolpowered mowers. The impact of switching to Kress RTKn robotic mowers is substantial - an 18-hole golf course could reduce its carbon footprint by up to 10 tons annually, making a significant contribution to environmental sustainability. Maintaining a pristine golf course or turf surface comes

with its own set of challenges, especially under time constraints and changing weather conditions. Kress RTKn mowers are designed to tackle these issues head-on. Their ability to operate efficiently in wet weather ensures consistent cutting even when grass growth is at its peak.

One of the standout features of Kress RTKn mowers is their near-silent operation. This allows greenkeepers to schedule mowing at any time of day or night without disturbing nearby residents, hotel guests, or players. Additionally, the robotic mowers reduce safety risks, such as the potential for staff injuries from flying golf balls.

Kress RTKn robotic mowers go beyond just cutting grass; they actively contribute to the health of the turf. By mowing early, even when dew is present, they reduce issues like soil compaction and minimise the effects of worm

Data access is just a click away with Turfkeeper

For the last 18 years Course Manager Geoff Smith has been spending hours meticulously setting up and inputting into an array of spreadsheets to help him manage the greenkeeping staff and grounds at the beautiful Abridge Golf Club in Romford, Essex.

‘All my spreadsheets were stored on a USB stick which I guarded with my life. It recorded everything I needed to manage all areas of the golf course including budgets and provided the necessary evidence and reports to justify everything we did. It didn’t bear thinking about if it was to ever get lost!”

Geoff joined the Abridge 18hole, par 72 Championship golf

course in 1996 and knows the greens better than anyone. He was a customer of Rigby Taylor, Headland Amenity and Symbio for around 12 years before they merged in 2021 to form Origin Amenity Solutions (OAS). “I love working with Origin, it’s been around 15 years now, and can’t praise them highly enough. They have great reps and some fantastic products. I put nearly all of my business through them.”

The course was first designed, in 1962 by renowned maestro of English Golf, Henry Cotton, whose outstanding feature was that both loops of nine holes started and finished at the clubhouse. It is considered one of the finest in the county and is an Open Regional Qualifying

Course. It has held various Essex tournaments and was host to the PDC EuroPro Tour event in 2022. Geoff uses a combination of non-biological and biological products as part of an Integrated Turf Management programme.

“The OAS reps work with me to choose products that complement each other well and ensure the very best outcome. We have around 750 members and our course and greens are expected to be in the best possible condition free of disease”, adds Geoff.

In 2023 Geoff was persuaded to trial the OAS TurfKeeper webbased digital platform which is designed to replace all manual spreadsheets and ledgers. He had a demonstration from Kevin Scarce, Turf Keepers Product Manager and whilst impressed was reluctant to move away from his trusted spreadsheets.

With greenkeepers and turf professionals facing mounting pressure to justify every decision they make, from equipment purchases to project proposals, and with costs soaring and resources dwindling, the need for data-driven insights is critical. TurfKeeper is being used in many golf and sports clubs across the UK and is equipping turf managers and greenkeepers with the tools they need to maximise resources, streamline decision-making, and manage turf maintenance.

Geoff implemented Turfkeeper in July 2023 and after a couple of hours of training set about entering his information into the system. Geoff considers himself “Old school” and wanted to try it alongside his existing spreadsheets. “I shouldn’t have worried, it’s such a user-friendly system and works brilliantly.

I love it and dropped my spreadsheets at the end of 2023. I now use Turfkeeper exclusively for all my data.”

At the heart of TurfKeeper lies a robust suite, from staff management to inventory control, task planning to budgeting. TurfKeeper provides greenkeepers with a central hub to oversee every aspect of their operations. “I use it for everything”, adds Geoff, “It’s only as good as the information you put into it though, so I spent a few days inputting – staff wages, hours, stock information, budgets, maintenance programme, etc and now it’s so easy to pull off the information I want. That’s the beauty of Turfkeeper. It gives you graphics and pie charts to show to management or the Greens Committee – everyone loves a picture - it’s so easy to understand and takes no time to produce.”

Abridge Golf Club is set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland with some of the finest views over the Essex countryside. It’s a close-knit club and its members and a Greens Committee are encouraged to interact, question,

and offer their suggestions. Geoff has a wealth of knowledge and is held in high esteem, but he does enjoy knowing he has data at his fingertips that he can show to back up his decisions or support his capital requests. His members requested the tees be cut by hand for a better finish. In seconds

Geoff had a report that showed the extra labour required to achieve this and the associated cost that management needed to sign off on additional staff recruitment.

Geoff is supported by a team of nine, there are currently 2 other people in his team with access permissions to the system, his deputy Ben Scrivener and first assistant Jamie Blagdon. They both assist Geoff with stock control, applications and help assist with planning tasks in Geoff’s absence.

Geoff now spends 30-45 minutes to plan for the week and month ahead,

rather than the couple of hours previously. “I use TurfKeeper for everything but primarily organising tasks for the greenkeeping team, stock control, and budget control.”

One of the most significant benefits of TurfKeeper is its ability to save time and resources. By automating repetitive tasks and eliminating manual paperwork, Geoff can focus his efforts on strategic decision-making and turf maintenance. “I am delighted with TurfKeeper, it has saved me hours of labour and I only have one platform to enter information into and extract data from. The team likes it because they can view the full picture, they know what is planned for everyone for the weeks and months ahead. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

Foamstream redefines weed control and business Club welcomes John Deere GPS sprayer

A Cornish golf club has become the first in south-west England to invest in a satellite-guided John Deere sprayer to help keep its course the in the best possible condition.

Newquay Golf Club took delivery of the John Deere HD200 ProGator precision sprayer earlier this month after identifying the machine as a tool to reduce costs and enhance its environmental profile.

The state-of-the-art unit is the first of its kind to be installed in the region and was supplied by local dealer Masons Kings.

Head Greenkeeper Dan Kendle said the purchase was all about sustainability.

“We like to keep up with advancements in technology because they can make us more

efficient and do things more accurately,” he said. “Sustainability is the big thing on golf courses as far as I’m concerned and the GPS functionality in the sprayer allows us to be more targeted in our applications and therefore reducing the impact on the environment.

“Over time, it will enable us to use fewer chemicals, less water and save on fuel and time which are also big plus points.”

John Deere’s GPS sprayer is at the forefront of modern golf course maintenance, promising to enhance application accuracy when applying fungicides, herbicides or nutrients to tee boxes, fairways and greens.

The HD200 ProGator is packed with advanced features including autosteer, data recording, and independent nozzle control which automatically shuts off

when the sprayer boom reaches a set boundary.

These innovations ensure efficient and eco-friendly operations, enabling precise treatment applications and minimising waste by avoiding spraying non-target areas such as bunkers and hedges.

Masons Kings’ dedicated Integrating Technologies Team carried out the installation with Dan and the club’s greenkeeping staff, ensuring that the sprayer is fully operational and ready to deliver top-tier performance.

Dan added: “We are extremely grateful for the support from entire Masons Kings team which has been instrumental in bringing this revolutionary equipment to Newquay Golf Club.

Foamstream by Weedingtech has been described as a ‘gamechanger’ in the world of weed control by contractors DB Premier Solutions.

In fact, owner Darren Baldwin was so impressed with the versatility of the system, that his new venture revolves solely around his L12 unitopening doors to customers in both the commercial and domestic markets.

With more than two decades of experience under his belt maintaining the world-leading sports surfaces at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, Darren admits he seldom gets excited about new machinery – but that changed upon his discovery of Foamstream.

“In the Premier League, sustainability is at the forefront of what we do. However, our pursuit of solutions that are more environmentally-friendly cannot be to the detriment of effectiveness or surface quality.” Darren continues, “Foamstream first dropped onto my radar

when I saw it in action at another Premier League Club. We then hired a unit at Tottenham and I was sold. I liked the versatility of it and could see it had real mileage – it’s probably one of only a handful of innovations that have come along and really changed the market.”

“In wanting to pursue something different, and take life a little gentler, I purchased an L12 from Campey Turfcare Systems in November 2023 and established DB Premier Solutions in the new year. It’s proving itself day after day, gaining interest from new and retuning customers and now means I’m just as busy as ever!”

As the worlds leading herbicidefree weed control solution, Foamstream kills weeds, moss and algae using the precise application of hot water insulated by a specially-formulated, biodegradable and organic foam.

Available in the UK via Campey Turfcare Systems, Foamstream targets unwanted vegetation as well as the surrounding spores, delivering control comparable to traditional chemical alternatives

in a range of applications and environments.

“Its versatility means that one day I can be in a football club, treating weeds in areas that are environmentally sensitive that would have relied on labourintensive hand-weeding as a previous method of control. The next, I might be in an equestrian facility working around stable blocks. Being safe to use around animals and pets makes Foamstream perfect for the domestic market, which has resulted in a wealth of new work with residential customers and council-owned facilities.”

He adds, “Being able to use the L12 as a commercial cleaning unit is just another string to its bow, along with being effective on moss – within two hours you’ll see a change in colour, making it easy then to brush out and remove. I’m genuinely excited for the coming months to just keep finding more and more things this system can do!”

Conference to protect waterways

A conference dedicated to the control of invasive weeds will examine the impact of aquatic weeds on Britain’s waterways and how best to deal with the problems they pose.

The Property Care Association’s (PCA) 2024 International Invasive Weed Conference (IIWC2024) will feature, for the first time, a session dedicated to aquatic invasives, with expert speakers from a range of leading organisations.

BASF’s latest addition to the greenkeepers armoury, Maxtima, has proven to be a huge success since its launch back in January at BTME.

With hundreds of greenkeepers turning to the cutting-edge demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicide thanks to its efficacy and long-lasting protection.

Maxtima’s evolution came through rigourous scientific testing, with BASF’s research and devlopment team testing and strategising around the clock until the optimum solution was created. Today, it has become one of the most popular fungicide for professional’s in recent years.

The active ingredient in Maxtima is a substance called mefentrifliconazole. Once applied, this active is rapidly absorbed into the leaf, where it is protected against degradation from the rain and high UV exposure. It then forms a reservoir that slowly releases the active ingredient for longterm defence against the toughest of fungal diseases for up to 28 days. The innovative

isopropanol-azole chemistry within Maxtima creates maximum binding capacity and adaptability due to the flexibility of the molecules, unlike other standard azoles, it binds tightly to the target fungal enzyme. This process enables the ingredients to control the plant pathogen strains that are tolerant against DMI’s, offering a substantial advantage that older DMI products on the market.

The most significant advantage of Maxtima is its high efficacy rate and quick control of the toughest turf diseases, dollar spot and microdochium. Microdochium is known for its resilience against control methods, and once it catches hold, can spread rapidly.

Dollar spot also presents turf managers with significant stress, as it is resilient against many DMI fungicides, but both diseases have no known resistance to Maxtima. In fact, a recent trial coordinated by Agrovista showed that turf that was treated with Maxtima, showed a 92% mean reduction of the disease compared to turf that

was left untreated. Maxtima’s impressive absorption rate is not exclusive to the warmer months like many other turf products. Even at temperatures as low as 4 degrees centigrade, it continued to bind to the leaf, giving it an improved ability to fight fungal pathogens during the autumn and winter months. What’s more, its ability to provide protection extends for up to 28 days thanks to its slow release functionality.

Due to its unique formulation, Maxtima can be paired with a non-DMI fungicide on turf in product rotation. Not only does this ensures maximum protection against fungal pathogens, but it helps to reduce the risk of the fungal population becoming resistant to the DMI active ingredient.

Matthew Martin, Strategic Key Account Manager at BASF said: “Maxtima continues to push the boundaries of what is possible and achievable in turf management. BASF had been working behind the scenes on the new DMI, Maxtima ® for

many years, and the development of such a rigour and effective product was down to the demand of turf professionals up and down the country who were struggling to control and prevent disease on their greens.

“The benefits of Maxtima were always known to us, but since its launch earlier this year, hearing how the turf professionals have received it, and the relief it has offered them when dealing with fungal disease is astounding. It is proving to be an essential part of the turf manager’s toolkit, and we can’t wait for more in the industry to try it!”

Maxtima was launched in collaboration with Agrovista Amenity, the industry’s leading supplier of professional products and specialist advice. Turf professionals will be able to speak to their local Agrovista representative to order the product and for more detail on its usage and compatibility.

Academy enhances facilities with state-of-the-art synthetic surface

Forming part of the King Edward VI Multi Academy Trust, are two Camp Hill institutions for Boys and Girls. As part of the campus there are a number of outdoor pitches to cater for a plethora of sporting activities.

Despite a number of outdoor pitches both grass and tarmac, it was decided by the school that the existing tarmac surface located next to the indoor facilities needed to be replaced. The campus’s existing fencing was broken and needed to be removed which would allow the courts to be extended by 8m.

The Trust wanted to take the opportunity to install a new surface that could offer more protection to the students and could be used by both the girls and boys campuses. Traditionally tarmacadam surfaces are considered to be more hard wearing, however in recent years the safety aspects of this type of surface has come under scrutiny.

With this in mind Blakedown Sport & Play worked with the school to select a surface that met the needs of the school. Having

undergone rigorous surface interaction tests Playrite’s Matchplay 2 was found to have higher levels of shock absorption, slip resistance, impact attenuation and rotation resistance, making artificial grass an ideal choice for physical environments.

Playrite’s Matchplay 2 synthetic grass surface is a multi-use surface specifically designed to be used for multiple sports. Matchplay 2 also benefits from a low sand content allowing for playtime to be conducted all year round and all weather conditions, as well as being available in a wide range of bright and vibrant colours, elevating a standard play area into a stimulating play environment.

The Playrite MatchPlay 2 surface was laid with permanent lines for 3 Tennis Courts and 3 Netball Courts along with painted lines for handball & football.

Steven Gori, from Blakedown Sports & Play commented “ The Matchplay 2 surface offered our client the level of protection they required for their pupils and allowed them to offer more

sports all year round without the limitations of the weather”.

Chris Pickles, Sales Director from Playrite commented “We’re thrilled to have been part of this project. Our aim with the Matchplay 2 MUGA surface was to provide a reliable, highperformance solution for sports enthusiasts. We hope it inspires students to stay active and pursue their passions.”

With its new Playrite Matchplay 2 surface, King Edwards IV Academy is able to offer excellent sporting experiences that foster an enjoyment of learning that allows every child the opportunity to achieve their full potential. A part of the external learning practices the school provides for the children is a focus on sports and physical activities.

Redexim proves the solution for safe synthetic surfaces

A combination of the RTC plus and Verti-Top TB from Redexim have been entrusted with protecting and preserving the lifespan of the synthetic surfaces – along with the health and safety of the students - at Emanuel School.

With the recent addition of an all-weather pitch at their Blagdon sports ground, the school opted to purchase a maintenance set-up for both this and the main site in South-West London to retain performance and keep the surfaces clear of contamination.

Sport plays an integral part of life for students at Emanuel School, reflected in the ongoing investment into the quality facilities available to pupils and a number of clubs and organisations in the wider community. Estates Director Chris Wright heads up a number

of teams responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the grounds and sports surfaces across the three sites. “With one artificial surface at the main school, our second at the Blagdon site came online in September 2023 which really made us look at how we were going to maintain these, along with the synthetic lawns we’ve introduced into our ornamental areas” Chris explains.

“The maintenance was previously contracted out, but from a cost and practical perspective, it became logical to invest in equipment that would give us the flexibility to conduct regular brushing and a more intensive deep clean more frequently.”

After speaking to local dealers Lister Wilder, Chris and the team opted for two RTC plus brush units and two Verti-Top®

TB cleaning systems from the award-winning Redexim synthetic range.

Powered by a 22hp petrol engine, the RTC plus features a 2.7m wide underslung, winged brush to make routine brushing a breeze. This is then complemented by the more intensive cleaning delivered by the Verti-Top® TB which lifts and separates contaminants from all types of infill material using a combination of vacuum and sieve.

“This partnership gives us flexibility and effective cleaning for the shorter-pile, sand-dressed surfaces as well as the ornamental carpet which has a longer pile.

The RTC plus is out once a week and then we can affix the Verti-Top TB to the RTC for a thorough clean once a month.”

Chris continues, “The Verti-Top has really impressed us with the amount of detritus it collects –

everything from paper clips to jewellery which are removed in a single pass.”

The purchase also means the maintenance teams have eliminated contamination risks when switching equipment between natural and synthetic turf. “We don’t want to be putting a tractor with muddy tyres onto the artificial pitches which could then go on to cause other playability or safety problems.

“We’ve been really pleased with the performance and results to date, and as we’ve come to expect from Redexim it’s a wellbuilt, well-designed solution which will help us to present good, clean surfaces for many years to come.”

Latest Redexim delivery at Craigielaw Golf Club Powerful blowers and brushes from Ventrac

A Turf Tidy 3000 has become the latest addition to a rapidly expanding Redexim fleet at Craigielaw Golf Club.

Delivered with both a flail and scarifier shaft in April 2024, the Turf Tidy is set to deliver effective fairway scarification and rough management at the East Lothian venue.

Described as ‘a golfers paradise’, the 18-hole Championship Links course is one of 22 which make up Scotland’s Golf Coast. In charge of the maintenance alongside a team of six is Head Greenkeeper Paul Hay. “We had a machine for scarification and cutting the rough but that wasn’t giving us the results we wanted so we got

in touch with Henderson Grass Machinery who, along with Allen Whellans at Redexim, gave us a demonstration of the Turf Tidy” he explains. “From the off, it was impressive - the fully floating head handled cut and collection on our undulating rough areas really well. In addition, we could see how effective the unit would be for scarification of the fairways, leaving a tidy finish and bringing the surfaces back into play swiftly.”

“Since its delivery, we’ve scarified a couple of areas on selected fairways to remove thatch and lateral growth with fantastic, clean results. Come the winter, we’re already planning to use the Turf Tidy to cut back

design that delivers powerful, yet quiet performance. The blower housing can be rotated 180 degrees in the horizontal axis allowing the operator to move debris in the desired direction without hindering operation. Two guide wheels maintain a consistent distance from the surface to maximise operational efficiency. This blower can be used to remove leaves, light snow, water and other debris.

The Ventrac ET202 Turbine blower makes quick work of any clean up job and is designed to move large volumes of air and is much quieter than conventional debris blowers. The powerful front discharge nozzle can be hydraulically rotated through 360

degrees from the operator’s seat enabling clean-up work to be done simply, quietly, and efficiently.

Industry stalwart and former Group course manager at The Club Company Chris Brook says, “Considering the Ventrac tractor unit is less than 25hp, it is remarkably powerful and can go anywhere. The Power Blower attachment is excellent; unlike a

lot of blowers that change the direction of the vortex through a vertical axis, in an up-andover action, this works in a 180° horizontal axis, which enables more control over the direction of the material being dispersed.

It’s great when blowing leaves from greens and, being out-front, visibility is second to none.”

Demonstrating the versatility of

the roughs, taking out some of the density and removing the unwanted vegetation which will bring multiple benefits to both the course and the players alike” Paul adds.

The Turf Tidy joins a Redexim Multiseeder 1200 and VertiDrain 7316 on Craigielaw’s fleet, both also installed by Henderson’s over recent years.

“The Multiseeder was a fantastic purchase! We’re into our third year with this machine which is used on the greens, tees, approaches and even some parts of the fairways. It’s an incredibly versatile dimple seeder, which we can quickly and easily adjust to suit ground conditions or seed type. We’re currently working to

incorporate more fescue into our playing surfaces so are utilising the Multiseeder with a single roller which works perfectly for us.”

“The delivery of the VertiDrain ® 7316 was incredibly timely, arriving ahead of the

winter meaning we could get a pass in on the tees, greens and approaches before the worst of the weather arrived.”

Paul concludes, “We’ve got to know what to expect with the Redexim equipment. Everything we have is reliable, versatile and is backed up with brilliant support from both the dealer and Redexim directly. We will certainly be looking to add more machines in the future.”

University’s field specialist applauds SISIS sweeper

Seattle University’s commitment to maintaining first-class athletic and sporting facilities has received a significant boost with the introduction of the SISIS SSS1000 towed sweeper.

Peter Larson, the Athletic Field Specialist overseeing the university’s sports grounds, has praised the efficiency and versatility of this innovative machine, particularly in its ability to effectively pick up grass clippings on both synthetic and natural grass pitches.

The SSS1000 sweeper serves as an indispensable tool for maintaining pristine playing surfaces. Featuring a spiral rotary brush, it efficiently sweeps debris into a mesh hopper, allowing for the preservation of pitch infill.

This crucial functionality not only enhances the aesthetics of the field but also ensures the safety and performance standards demanded by athletes.

Regular cleaning of synthetic surfaces is vital to avoid contamination and remove potentially harmful debris before play. The SSS1000 has proven instrumental in achieving this goal for Seattle University, providing Peter and his team with a fast work rate that helps keep the surfaces in optimal condition.

One of the standout features of the SSS1000 is its adaptability to different surfaces. Whether it’s synthetic turf or natural grass, the sweeper’s adjustable brush height ensures thorough cleaning without causing damage.

Furthermore, its unique spiral brush design minimises vibration, guaranteeing constant brush contact with the surface for consistent results.

Peter’s journey with the SISIS Sweeper began with its introduction at the Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Trade Show in 2023.

Drawn by the promise of a quieter and more efficient alternative to their previous equipment, Peter was impressed by the sweeper’s self-propelled technology.

“I was looking for a tow behind sweeper for our synthetic field to replace our previous machine,” says Peter. “The old machine was effective at sweeping however it was too loud. I was interested in the self-propelled technology and friends at the Seahawks Training Facility gave the SSS1000 a ringing endorsement.

They provided us with a demo on their grass field to show how effective it is at picking up grass clippings.”

Reflecting on his experience with the sweeper, Peter notes its intuitive operation and quiet operation as standout qualities.

“We have used the SISIS Sweeper on our synthetic field and recently we brought it over to our soccer pitch to sweep up grass clippings - it gets the job done,” he remarks. “In both cases, I appreciate the quiet nature of the machine. It is intuitive and easy to operate.”

“I highly recommend this product. It works well on synthetic and natural grass fields, which is difficult to find in a sweeper,” adds Peter.

As Seattle University continues to prioritise the maintenance and enhancement of its athletic facilities, the SISIS SSS1000 towed sweeper offers superior performance and versatility.

Brushcutting is simple with Ventrac

The Tough Cut deck attachment for the Ventrac 4520 all-terrain compact tractor has been specifically designed for mowing high grass, thick weeds and heavy brush. Able to work on slopes of up to 30 degrees, it can save huge amounts of man-hours when compared to strimming.

Capable of tackling saplings up to 2.54 mm (1 inch) in diameter, the Tough Cut makes short work out of overgrown thickets. It has three cutting heights: 76 mm, 92 mm and 108 mm. Easy servicing of belts and pulleys is provided by the hinged and removable cover, while the flip-up deck provides easy access for cleaning and changing blades.

Chris Houfe, Chairman of Greens at Stamford Golf Club

says: “Obviously we want members and visitors to enjoy their experience with us and we are currently improving the playability of the course, by removing larger areas of growth that have encroached onto the fairways over time,” he said.

“That’s why we purchased the Tough Cut deck; it does a fantastic job of knocking down brambles, young saplings, gorse and long grass, saving hours of brush-cutting for our small team.

Once this has been removed, we can create more rough and semirough areas, making it easier to find wayward balls and speed up play, in general.

Peter Pattenden, the Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Carden Park, is a 30-year veteran of the

industry and is an enthusiastic advocate of the Tough Cut deck.

“The Tough Cut deck is superb as it can cut through saplings, bracken and gorse, helping to maintain the areas that consume man-hours. We do a lot of woodland management, removing trees and scrub, and this means travelling across fairways to reach particular areas. The light footprint of the Ventrac, which I believe is just 6 psi, allows us to go in without leaving wheel marks across the courses. I’ve been buying machinery since 1996 and can honestly say this is one of the best machines I have ever bought.”

Mowing in winter made easy

Let’s face it; it’s so frustrating knowing that the grass needs a cut or there’s maintenance jobs to be done, but the weather’s against you.

However, owners of Ventrac compact tractors don’t have this issue as their highly versatile machine with its numerous attachments can get out and work, even in the most inclement weather.

This is due to machine’s unique dual-wheel configuration (eight tyres in total) exerting just 6 psi ground pressure on the turf. This means that it’s one of very few machines that can operate on a golf fairway or sports field

during, or shortly after, a deluge. Worm casts are the bane of a turf managers life during the autumn and winter months, but the Ventrac, with its selection of nine mowing decks and other attachments, can get out and get the job done.

Peter Pattenden, Golf Courses and Estate Manager at Carden Park in Cheshire says, “Worm casts on fairways can are a significant problem; you don’t want to use reel mowers as you have to keeping sharpening the cylinders after use, but we can set the Contour deck, which has three rotary blades, at 19mm and keep everything looking good.

“Our Ventracs have many outstanding qualities: versatility, manoeuvrability, build quality, reliability, ease of operation, but one not readily appreciated until you have it, is the ability to operate in wet conditions. We can be wet up here in Cheshire and it’s got us out of jail on many occasions. We get flash flooding on parts of the courses after heavy rain, but we can still get out and work. I have even used both machines, side by side, with their Contour decks to mow the rough after heavy downpours.”

are always happy to provide expert advice on the SnowEx spreader best suited to your application. SnowEx spreaders feature 12V DC direct-drive motors mounted in a weather-tight enclosure to ensure reliable power in every situation. The hoppers are built-in high-density polyethylene and UV protected for zero corrosion and reduced weight. They are all bright, safety yellow so you can’t miss them. Tough is the word when it comes to the frames, in modular steel for built-in strength with an electrostatic powder finish.

The drives feature a revolutionary, maximum torque

transmission with a hardened steel worm and bronze gear, with no chains, pulleys, drive belts or gears to break or wear.

Many of the spreaders have incab control units for the precise operation of spinners and augers, preventing overspreading and material wastage while offering greater comfort and safety for operators. To complete the system, a steel auger feed is designed to give a more positive and accurate supply to the spinner compared to a conveyor belt.

Essential winter maintenance tools for landscape professionals

We ask Rhys Adams, national sales manager OPE at Milwaukee Tool, discusses his top choice solutions from Milwaukee Tool for tackling winter maintenance challenges.

As the colder months approach, landscaping professionals are turning their attention to winter maintenance. Whether they’re responsible for maintaining public spaces, private landscapes or sports facilities, having the right tools can make it much easier to tackle winter’s challenges.

Outdoor maintenance becomes increasingly more difficult as the weather gets colder. The grounds get wetter, and leaves and other debris start to fall, meaning powerful tools are needed to clean outdoor locations quickly. One tool capable of tackling these challenges is Milwaukee Tool’s M18 FUEL DUAL BATTERY BLOWER (M18 F2BL). This powerful tool is designed for efficiently clearing large outdoor areas such as

parks or golf courses, with an air volume of up to 17 m³/min at 233 km/h, while its user-friendly, balanced design includes an extra handle for precise control, making it ideal for tight spaces.

Similarly, the variable speed lock allows you to modify the airflow for different activities, achieving maximum throttle in less than a second, reducing delays and particularly useful in areas where debris needs to be shifted quickly.

Along with leaves, winter weather often brings fallen branches and trees, creating both an eyesore and a safety risk.

To address this, the Milwaukee M18 FUEL CHAINSAW WITH 40 CM BAR (M18 FCHS) is a reliable, battery-powered tool that easily cuts through these obstacles, offering the power of a petrol chainsaw without the hassle of messy fuels like petrol, saving both time and effort.

Its ability to maintain speed under load, especially with

thicker branches, is a significant advantage for landscaping professionals. With a high-output system and the capacity to cut through up to 150 pieces of 100 mm x 100 mm pine on a full charge, this chainsaw is ideal for extensive clean-up projects and emergency tree removal.

The last key factor in winter maintenance is pruning, which is an essential part of winter landscape maintenance and helps the overall health of trees and shrubs. The Milwaukee Tool M18 BRUSHLESS TELESCOPIC SHEAR (M18 BLTS) simplifies this task, especially for tall trees and hard-to-reach branches. Its telescopic function extends from 2.1 metres to 3 metres, reducing the need for ladders and enhancing safety. With the ability to make up to 2,000 cuts

in 2.5 cm softwood branches on a single M18 HIGH OUTPUT 5.5 Ah battery pack charge, you can work efficiently without power concerns. The retractable branch hook and ergonomic design provide better control and ease of use, making this tool ideal for regular winter pruning to keep trees and shrubs healthy and safe.

Winter maintenance is about more than just aesthetics - these tools offer the reliability and ease of use needed to tackle a wide range of tasks, ensuring that your winter maintenance routine is efficient, effective and safe, allowing you to deliver the best results for the landscapes you care for, even in the most challenging conditions.

GKB Rotobrush is the perfect perimeter partner

Equipped with rigid bristles, the Rotobrush from GKB Machines is the perfect partner for decompaction and clearance of contamination from the perimeters of synthetic surfaces.

Available in two working widths, the rotating brush delivers fast and effective cleaning – restoring the look and playability of your pitch.

When considering the brushing of your synthetic surface, it is vital that you give as much attention to the perimeters as the main playing surface.

The edges of your installation tend to be the primary spaces for contamination, leading to settlements of moss and algae and generating dangerous, slippery conditions for the players.

With either one 40cm rotating brush on the RB40, or two brushes on the RB120 model,

the GKB Rotobrush is adjustable for work on all types of synthetic surface, including playgrounds and artificial football pitch surrounds.

In one pass, it successfully breaks up infill material –helping to enhance drainage - and lifts out debris and potential contamination for improved aesthetics and player safety.

On the Rotobrush 120 further tailored options are available including changing the brush disc for spring tines for enhanced surface penetration.

In addition, the Rotobrush can be specified with a mounting plate enabling it to be fitted to most mainstream models of mini wheel loader for even more versatility.

Birkdale launches new light grey URBAN Slatted Panel

Birkdale has added a new colour to its DuraPost URBAN Slatted Composite Panel range.

Developed in response to customer demand – the new Light Grey Panel offers a contemporary fencing solution that mimics the appearance of timber without any of the maintenance requirements.

Already available in Natural, Charcoal and Brown, the new Light Grey DuraPost URBAN Slatted Panel consists of six composite boards and two horizontal u-shaped rails at the top and base of the panel. The

boards are manufactured using 60 to 70% recycled materials including a combination of HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and rice husks – a natural bi-product from the rice industry. This stable material will not warp or degrade over time, unlike timber, and it does not need to be painted or treated.

Furthermore, the panels have been tested to EN 1794-1-2018 and, to maximise longevity, the rails are made from galvanised steel – a strong, light and highly durable material – which is then nano-coated and powder coated

Turntable and tracked solutions take centre stage

The revolutionary EVO 205TT is set to take centre stage at APF 2024 as leading woodchipper manufacturers GreenMech return to Ragley Estate this September.

Launched to much acclaim earlier in 2024, the versatility, safety and unparalleled performance of the EVO 205TT will be showcased on stand 1270-1310 alongside a number of other chipping solutions to suit tasks and timber of all shapes and sizes.

GreenMech’s EVO Series has firmly cemented its status as the professional commercial choice, with 6” and 8” variants in tracked and road-tow configurations designed to meet the demanding requirements of the modern-day arborist. Incorporating all of the features now synonymous with the series including wide-in feed

chute, horizontal rollers and heavy-duty flywheel, the EVO 205TT turntable model was introduced to provide maximum flexibility in positioning for safe and efficient operation.

With a Stage V Kubota 50hp diesel engine at its core, the 8” EVO 205TT delivers powerful performance – with fuel consumption optimised by GreenMech’s ‘Smart Sense’ controller system. The 360o turntable allows you to chip from any angle, with bulky material and brash processed with ease by the disc-blade configuration which not only delivers accurate chipping but stays sharper for longer thanks to the unique ability to rotate the cutting edge.

The GreenMech team will be on hand for the show duration to

answer visitor questions on the EVO 205TT and all other models on display, including the EVO 205D SURE-Trak. GreenMech’s SURE-Trak system allows each track to be raised or lowered independently on the move, ensuring the machine maintains a horizontal position when climbing or descending slopes. Providing unrivalled climbing ability and up to 540mm of ground clearance, the 205D SURE-Trak will provide ultimate manoeuvrability for the operator and maximise stability when traversing uneven ground.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to get their hands on some GreenMech goodies by entering the ‘Spin to Win’ competition on the stand.
