The Magic Mountain
In a land far away, there lived a well-to-do lady with her daughter, Helen, and her stepdaughter, Harriet. The lady always made Harriet’s life miserable. Harriet was forced to shoulder the household chores.
Her stepmother and Helen did nothing except dress in their finest clothes and attend parties. In spite of it all, however, Harriet never complained.
One day, Helen wanted some red roses to put in her hair for a party. “Harriet, go up the mountain and find me some red roses,” said the mother. “They must be fresh.”
“But, but... whoever heard of roses blooming in the dead of winter?” said Harriet. “Do you dare to disobey?” said Helen. “Not another word. You must go now.”
When Harriet reached the top of the mountain, all she saw was snow. Cold and hungry, she suddenly saw a light some distance away, so she walked towards it. Upon reaching, she saw an old couple warming themselves over a small fireplace. “May I warm myself here?” she asked. The couple nodded and even shared their hot food with her.
“What brings you here on this very snowy day,” asked the old lady. “I am looking for red roses,” replied Harriet. “This is not the season for red roses,” said the old man.
“I know, but my stepmother has ordered me to find roses on this mountain, and I cannot go home until I find it,” Harriet said.
The couple sympathised with Harriet, so they somehow presented her with some roses. She thanked the couple and made her way home. Helen and her mother were amazed at the sight of the red roses. A few weeks later, Helen wanted some red apples. Once again, Harriet was forced to go up the mountain. As she was making her way up, she said: “Where am I going get apples in this snow.”
Luckily for her, she met the old couple yet again. They were willing to help Harriet out. They took her to an apple tree not far from their fireplace. It was the most beautiful tree she had ever seen. “You can only pick three apples,” said the old man.
When Harriet returned, Helen and her mother were shocked to see the apples she brought home. Why didn’t you bring more apples?” asked Helen angrily. “You must have eaten them on your way back,” the mother said. “I have not even tasted them,” said Harriet. “I was only allowed to take three apples.” “Listen, mother,” said Helen. “Give me my cloak. I will fetch more apples myself.”
In spite of her mother’s advice, Helen went to the top of the mountain. There was snow everywhere. Soon, Helen was lost. It was then that she came upon an old couple near a fireplace. Without asking permission, she headed to the fire and warmed herself. The old couple found Helen to be rude. “What brings you here?” asked the old woman.
“I am not obliged to tell you. What business is it of yours?” Helen replied curtly and continued her journey. After miles and miles of walking in the snow, Helen was totally lost.
By this time, days had passed. Fearing for Helen’s safety, her mother went up the mountain to search for her daughter.
To this day, no one knows what happened to Helen and her mother. As for Harriet, she continues to pray for their safe return. Nevertheless, she now lives in peace with no one to torment her. 63 E D I S I 3
