Elders at the heart of Waiben NAIDOC event

NAIDOC was celebrated by 30 Zenadth Kes Elders, who made their way to the Mura Kosker Buai Mudh shed on Waiben for a meal and cultural dance performances last week. The 2023 NAIDOC theme ‘For Our Elders’ was a source of great pride as they shared their stories and wisdom, telling attendees love and respect was at the core of what they wanted to pass on to younger generations. Fisheries management may be closer after Ministers’ visit STORY BY JEN ENOSA & CARLI WILLIS Moving towards one hundred per cent fisheries management may be a step closer after Federal and state ministers for agriculture and fisheries visited the Torres

Strait for two days last week, to hold face-to-face discussions on the issue for the first time in eight years. The visit came after Zenadth Kes and Cape York Traditional Owners were successful in achieving native title over two

million hectares of sea country in November last year. Torres Strait Regional Authority chairperson and member of the Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) Napau Pedro Stephen AM said it was a long time aspiration of local authorities to take over

fisheries management. “Now that we have one hundred percent of the sea claim we need to manage one hundred percent of our fisheries and this is part of our journey towards that,” he said. “I think having them here, we

can really translate the aspiration of our people. “It’s important because fisheries, it’s our farm, from day dot.” The ministers visited Waiben, Erub and Badu Islands. Continued P2 >
