Fisheries management may be closer after Ministers’ visit

Strait for two days last week, to hold face-to-face discussions on the issue for the first time in eight years.

Moving towards one hundred per cent fisheries management may be a step closer after Federal and state ministers for agriculture and fisheries visited the Torres

The visit came after Zenadth Kes and Cape York Traditional Owners were successful in achieving native title over two million hectares of sea country in November last year.

Torres Strait Regional Authority chairperson and member of the Protected Zone Joint Authority (PZJA) Napau Pedro Stephen AM said it was a long time aspiration of local authorities to take over fisheries management.

“Now that we have one hundred percent of the sea claim we need to manage one hundred percent of our fisheries and this is part of our journey towards that,” he said.

“I think having them here, we can really translate the aspiration of our people.

“It’s important because fisheries, it’s our farm, from day dot.”

The ministers visited Waiben, Erub and Badu Islands.
