M Continued from P10 “There are certain things that can be dealt with via a tele-consult and the use of video calls and photos. “While this is a very useful service, it does not compare to a hands on consultation. “I am very limited in what I can do, however, I try my hardest and am learning all the time. “The hardest for me is dealing with preventable injuries caused by dog attacks, and those cases where we don’t have the equipment or facilities or qualified people to diagnose issues. “The group was formed because of the high number of strays and unwanted litters, the lack of services and how expensive it was for desexing – meaning that lots of people were unable to afford to have their pets desexed and would end up with one or two litters of puppies and even more kittens every year. “With no homes for them to go, lots of the pets succumb to parvo, or are often run over when out on the street. “We decided early on that preventing these litters would be far more effective than trying to rehome them and not fixing the problem.” Another motivation was to lessen the suffering of animals that would otherwise he denied vet care. For example one early case was a puppy with a broken leg which was sent to Cairns for surgery, all fundraised by Patrick and Sam.

Without their efforts, the puppy would have likely suffered for months and possibly died from infection. It survived to be adopted by someone on the mainland. “We now rescue, rehabilitate and rehome, stray, abused, neglected or unwanted animals,” Sonia said. The stats speak for themselves. Since the group was formed, it has found new homes for 330 dogs and cats. Some of the TI dogs travel as far as Melbourne to find their furever homes. They get sent down South with a jumper, to prepare them for the cold. Judging by the many photos Sonia carries on her phone from happy owners of Torres Strait Island dogs, they lead a happy and content life in the big smoke. The Thursday Island Animal Support Group can be reached on 0477 271 958, a text or email is the preferred method of contact for non-urgent enquiries or to make an appointment for the next clinic. It is always looking for new foster carers on TI and Horn Island and donations of towels for the clinic. Financial donations can be made to: Thursday Island Animal Support Group Inc, BSB 084-951, Account 93-482-4281, all donations are tax
deductable. 100 per cent of donations go towards the care of animals and to keep the clinics operating, we do not use funds for wages, everyone is a volunteer.
