Lessons start from 5 years, but if you want to bring a younger child and climb with them, that’s fine too.’ The facility is suitable for all ages and abilities, from the training cube which has a grid with all the different finger and hand holds and a spongy landing where you can work on specific areas of fitness, to a 15 metre wall and a boulder training area. You can hire all the equipment you need and they also have disability aids including a hoist, as well as free sport sessions for those with additional support needs. Indoor climbing is a sport in itself, but many people progress to climbing outside on cliff faces and up the sides of mountains. It’s a mental as well as a physical workout, requiring self-control as well as endurance and strength training. You can take it to any level you want, from training on beginner climbs with support and supervision indoors, to sport climbing outside where someone has climbed the route before you and left bolts and pins for you to attach to, to trad climbing where you place the fixtures yourself. Here in the North-east we are blessed with miles of climbable coastline, particularly from Muchalls up to Aberdeen city, and south of Peterhead. There’s also trad climbing at the Pass of Ballater and bouldering along the Moray coast. Go to the UKC site ukclimbing.com and use their Crag Locator to find a spot near you, there are around 200 sites in Aberdeenshire alone.

HEALTHY EATING

Not so long ago, the news that one of your friends or family was going vegan was a bit of a shock, and your first panicked thoughts ran along the lines of 'what on earth will we make for dinner?', 'can we even go out and eat with them?' and 'won't that be unhealthy?'

choosing vegan items from a restaurant menu.

In the last decade, the vegan diet has roared into the mainstream, with hundreds of products, meals and recipes appearing on supermarket shelves, restaurant menus and cookery programmes including The Great British Bake Off and Masterchef. Top sportsmen and women including Lewis Hamilton and Venus Williams identify as vegans whilst maintaining high-profile sporting prowess, and more than 250,000 people signed up for Veganuary in the UK this year.

I

decided to start eating a vegan diet in sixth year after being vegetarian for about a year. I became more aware of the dairy industry and how it is linked to the meat industry, and after eating vegan for a few months, I became aware of the vegan lifestyle (not using animals for food, clothing, makeup products or entertainment) and I have been living this way ever since. As my mum is vegetarian, we loved finding new recipes and techniques to “veganise” non-vegan foods. We still enjoy trading recipes and trying new products from supermarkets. Once I started living alone, I was surprised at how cheap my food shops were in comparison to my omnivore flat mates. Eating vegan doesn’t have to be expensive, the cheapest things in the supermarket are tinned beans,

rice, pastas and reduced fruit and veggies! I think eating simple and quick meals makes life easier-like any other student, I make big pots of soup/chilli/stews and freeze them for future use. At first, going out to eat was slightly awkward as I didn’t feel confident enough to ask if any dishes could be made vegan. However after 4 years and experience working in restaurants it’s easier than I first thought, but

as my mum is vegetarian, we loved finding new recipes and techniques to ‘ v eganise‘ non _ vegan foods

HEALTHY EATING

when in doubt phone ahead and let the restaurant know there is a vegan coming! I feel fantastic, I cannot express how much this lifestyle has impacted my life. After ditching dairy I saw a huge difference in my skin, hair and I lost weight almost instantly (not an unhealthy amount!), plus eating such a low cholesterol diet means I have huge amounts of energy and have become a morning person. I love the fact that I can eat as much as I like and never feel guilty or unhealthy. I couldn’t recommend it enough, I feel fantastic!

Ava’s Pancake Recipe Favourite recipe is so difficult! But my go-to sweet recipe is always pancakes.

INGREDIENTS 1 cup of flour 1 cup of plant-based milk 1 tsp vanilla extract

METHOD Whisk everything together, a dash of sunflower oil in a frying pan and cook the pancakes on each side for 3 minutes (or until golden brown) top with maple syrup and fruit.

SWEET TREAT!

enough yum for two people!

2018 saw UK hit the number one spot for most new vegan products launched.

When I first started the food truck, it became apparent that vegan choices work for a lot of people, particularly where allergies are concerned. My truck is out every weekend just off the Beach Boulevard whenever the weather is fine, and we serve coffee from Arbroath, porridge with seasonal toppings, often from Dad’s allotment, alongside vegan soups and sandwiches. The only cake that isn’t vegan is my brownie, but I’m working on it!

MEN’S SHEDS

the MEASURE of HAPPINESS THE CONCEPT OF A MAN IN HIS SHED AT THE BOTTOM OF THE GARDEN IS A FAMILIAR ONE, BUT A MEN’S SHED? AND AN ASSOCIATION AT THAT. WE LOOKED INTO JUST WHAT IS SO SPECIAL, AND ESSENTIAL, ABOUT A MEN’S SHED.

S

tarted in Australia around 2005, the Men’s Shed Movement builds on the basic need to potter and be useful, and combines it with something rarely found in the individual tool shed – companionship. Traditional male places to socialise outside work in the past have been pubs and bookies, almost always with alcohol to lubricate the process. Which meant that once a man retired, his options for making friends without a partner or a drink were very limited, causing many social problems including alcoholism, depression and high rates of suicide.

feels outside society then they suffer, and retirement can be hell for a lot of men. The Men’s Sheds are safe places where men can go and be useful, working alongside other men, and then sit down and socialise with each other. There are certain topics that men just won’t speak about with women around, and are unlikely to bring up in a competitive workplace. Our hope is that men will have those healthy conversations in the non-threatening Men’s Shed environment, and go on to make friends, and better health decisions as a result’.

When anyone feels outside society then they suffer, and retirement can be hell for a lot of men.

Westhill Men’s Shed is a thriving example. Started as a conversation in Circles coffee shop between six people in 2011, the Men’s Shed opened in 2013 as the first of its kind in Scotland. Nick Pilbeam, Secretary is rightly proud of what they have achieved since then. ‘We have 180 members on the books and between 60 and 80 come every day we are open. We received funding from Age Scotland to build the workshop and from the National Lottery to buy tools. We were also lucky enough to be able to lease a former library building from the council, which seemed big at the time, but we are already outgrowing it.’ BE YOU MAGAZINE

MEN’S SHEDS

‘Our hope is that men will have healthy conversations in the non-threatening men’s shed environment, and go on to make friends as a result’. Nick’s working life was in IT, and there are doctors, joiners and grandads, as well as a large number from the oil industry all working in the fully kitted out wood and metal workshops. They fundraise in three ways; by taking on projects from the local community, such as building an eco-greenhouse or props for the school play; holding quarterly sales in the shopping centre, and taking in repairs, many of which people just hand in at the door. They also run social events for members and families, as well as a She Shed, where women can learn DIY skills on a Monday evening. ‘It’s important to keep the space predominantly male, as men don’t easily join a club, and it often takes time to forge relationships’, says Nick. From one shed in Scotland in 2013, to 155 and rising , that’s how fast this much-needed movement is growing. IF YOU OR ANYONE YOU KNOW WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE, SEE SCOTTISHMSA.ORG.UK

the Labyrinth . . a pa th to serenity

IN TALES FROM ANCIENT GREECE, THE LABYRINTH WAS BUILT TO CONTAIN THE MINOTAUR, A MONSTROUS CREATURE WITH THE BODY OF A MAN, AND THE HEAD AND TAIL OF A BULL. WE NOW KNOW THAT THIS MUST HAVE BEEN A MAZE, AS THEREIN LIES THE CRUCIAL DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MAZE AND A LABYRINTH, A MAZE IS MEANT TO CONFUSE AND FRUSTRATE, WHEREAS THE LABYRINTH IS A PATTERN MADE OF ONE CONTINUOUS PATH WITH NO NAVIGATIONAL CHALLENGES AND NO WAY TO GET LOST.

‘At the very least you’ll feel calmer as the rhythmic walking forces you to slow down.’

Labyrinths are ancient and modern, complex and simple, Christian and Pagan all at once. You begin at the beginning, following the path that takes you into the centre and out again; beautiful, ancient designs have reached us here in the 21st century virtually unchanged and are now often used for therapy or meditation. Many labyrinths have been sited in public or accessible places, specifically for people to use whenever they want, such as the Dunure labyrinth in Ayr. This beautiful community project sits on a clifftop in the shadow of a ruined castle overlooking the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran, and wild flower seeds have found their way into the fabric of the structure making it even more pleasing. Grahame Gardiner is a geomancer and builder of labyrinths, using an age-old skill which taps into the positive energies of the earth to determine where best to site a labyrinth. ‘I use a technique called dowsing to find ley lines or energy lines, ensuring that the labyrinth will be effective once it is created. They can be any size, are made using lots of different materials and you don’t need any experience to walk one. At the very least you’ll feel calmer as the rhythmic walking forces you to slow down.’ Grahame is the secretary of the Geomancy Group and has helped to build many labyrinths, including the one at B.A. Stores in Lyne of Skene in Aberdeenshire. 26

‘some find it meditative, others find companionship instead’

Elaine Reid is a writing therapist who practises in Banchory. She uses various forms of portable labyrinth to complement her practice and also as standalone workshops. ‘I find that people get many different things from the labyrinth, some find it meditative, others find companionship. It might just provide some respite from a busy day, or unlock deeply hidden emotions, depending on the person and the life stage they’re at’.

‘I HAVE A ROPE LABYRINTH THAT I USE OUTSIDE AND A CANVAS ONE FOR INDOORS, ENABLING ME TO TAKE THE LABYRINTH OUT AND ABOUT.’ Elaine is running a workshop this spring at The Barn Arts Centre in Banchory.

Go find a labyrinth 01/ There’s a grass one inside the Cruikshank Botanical Gardens in Old Aberdeen. Best time to visit is spring when over 4,000 crocuses will line your path. 02/ Another grass labyrinth lies outside Banff Castle, a centre for people with additional needs in the town of Banff. ASK THE PROFESSIONAL

ASK THE PROFESSIONAL A t the Wallace Practice, their primary aim is to offer the highest quality patient care given promptly, efficiently and in confidence, with sympathetic attention to individual needs. Combining the experience of almost 40 years in practice with up to date modern technology, they are constantly updating their practices and methods of delivery. They firmly believe that nothing is as effective as truly listening to their patients, assessing their problems and planning their treatments to make sure they get it right from the start.

JEFF WALLACE, PHYSIOTHERAPIST

There are nine physios at the practice, offering practical hands-on treatment and advice for muscle and joint problems, post-op rehabilitation, back and neck sprains and strains, as well as specialising in sports injuries. They also offer massage, podiatry and acupuncture.

Q

I’ve been going to the gym and my heel is sore, do I have an Achilles tendon problem?

‘Achilles tendon problems are becoming increasingly prevalent as the gym culture grows. If you have suddenly increased your training or activity level, or have become involved in repetitive activity like long distance running and you have pain just above your heel then it may be achilles tendonitis. Specific strengthening exercises are likely to help along with correct load management and, contrary to what you might think, stretching may make it worse! It’s important to speak to your physiotherapist regarding your specific symptoms as treatment will vary according to your own presentation. Even if you are thinking about changing your level of training or activity, it’s a good idea to get professional advice, that way you could prevent an injury happening.’

HEAVENLY HERBS

ROSEMARY & THYME

FEVERFEW Use the leaves and flowers of the feverfew plant for teas; chew leaves to ease headache pain (including migraines). It’s also been shown to provide relief for arthritis, and skin conditions.

Medicinal herbs like rosemary help memory, improve mood and sweeten breath. Grow in the sun and poorer soil. LAVENDER Even smelling this medicinal herb has been shown to calm and relax. It also eases pain and when applied to cuts and bruises functions as an antiseptic. Lavender is antibacterial, so it’s good for fungal infections and will clean the skin and cuticles. LEMON BALM A relative of mint, lemon balm is a versatile herb that helps relieve anxiety, insomnia, wounds, herpes, insect bites, flatulence, and an upset stomach. It also speeds the healing of cold sores and improves circulation. PEPPERMINT If you have digestion or wind problems, sipping tea made of peppermint can provide relief. It’s also been shown to help soothe headaches.

GARLIC Used for lowering cholesterol and blood pressure, garlic also has antimicrobial effects.

BASIL Basil is one of a few herbs that can help with flatulence, lack of appetite, cuts, and scrapes. Harvest the young leaves of this annual plant as needed.

GINGER The root of ginger is used to ease nausea and motion sickness, and help with bloating or heartburn.

CHAMOMILE

MARIGOLD Good for sunburn, acne, and blemishes but also soothes ulcers and digestive problems.

Use the flower heads of chamomile for infusions and salves to relieve indigestion and colic, anxiety and tension, and skin inflammations and irritations.

PARSLEY Don’t think of it as decorative on your plate; this medicinal herb is loaded with nutrients as well as healing powers to help with flatulence and bad breath.

ECHINACEA If you suffer from a cold or the flu, try echinacea to ease the severity of your symptoms. It also helps provide relief to your immune system. Use the leaf, stalk or root.

SAGE Sage’s genus name Salvia means “to heal,” reflecting its early use as a medicinal, not culinary, herb. It can help provide relief for mouth and throat inflammations.

RETREATS

YOGA began in India more than 5,000 years ago and is as popular today as ever. Like Pilates, it is low intensity, low impact and inclusive as poses can be adapted for various physical needs, but there does tend to be a greater focus on spirituality in yoga. Often prescribed for those suffering from stress and anxiety, the mindfulness associated with yoga can provide a non-medical path to serenity; whilst improving flexibility and helping to counter the ageing process. Speaking of which, you can take up yoga at any age and it can be recommended for those at risk of falls, as it improves balance and co-ordination.

PILATES FESTIVAL SCOTLAND DUNBLANE HYDRO 24 MARCH

PILATES was developed by Joseph Pilates as a healing and rehabilitation regime in 1920. It focuses on building core strength and fitness using either a series of mat-based exercises or using machines, known as Reformer Pilates. Mat-based classes are extended using balls, bands and foam rollers, depending on the level of difficulty. Improved core strength in turn improves posture and balance, as well as strengthening the pelvic area. Pilates is often prescribed by physiotherapists as part of a recovery programme from injury or operation, but can also be used preventatively.

WORSHIP THE WATER

take a refillable bottle with you (fill up after security) and keep it with you to stay hydrated all day. Buy large containers of bottled water from the supermarket and decant into smaller bottles to keep cold in the fridge for the next day.

01

02 take your trainers and maybe an exercise mat (page 39), whatever it takes to motivate you to do some exercise on holiday. Download a new fitness app on your phone (page 30) that suits the space you’re staying in and the type of holiday you’re on. Walk as much as you can, and how about a horseride or a sunset kayak as part of your itinerary?

04

PACK A PICNIC

Instead of eating out for every meal, why not see what the local supermarket or farmers’ markets have on offer for lunch and take it with you to eat somewhere scenic on your travels? That way you can choose something healthy and maybe try something new!

KEEP REGULAR HOURS

If you’re not normally a night owl, then your body won’t like staying up late every night. Try and stick to what makes you feel good at home, especially if you have jet lag to deal with, and your system will thank you for it. It might just be better to get up for the sunrise than stay up for it… BE YOU MAGAZINE
