Where there’s a Will

ake 2026 the year you sort your affairs out. We’re often reluctant to think too far ahead but, sadly, death comes to us all. It’s vitally important that your “life admin” is up-to-date and a Will is in place. Why have a Will? It’s the only way of ensuring that the people you choose benefit from your estate. It can also reduce the costs and time required to deal with your estate. If you don’t have a will? Then the default Scots law rules of intestacy will apply. Who inherits depends on the family you leave behind. Generally, any spouse/civil partner will rank first and any children thereafter. The amount each inherits depends on the value and make up of your estate. If you have no spouse/civil partner or children, then parents, siblings and wider family join the mix. If there’s no surviving family, your assets pass to the Crown.

Women’s health under the microscope with Alpha Hospital Group

The psychologist who is also a mum of two and set to welcome her third baby later this year, co-founded Alpha Hospital Group with her husband, Consultant Plastic Surgeon Thanassi Athanassopoulos. The pair have now designed a new service covering all things women’s health, having spotted what they believe is a gap in the market for women seeking expert help when it is needed most. The talented couple launched Alpha Hospital Group in 2019, as the first cosmetic and reconstructive surgery hospital in the North of Scotland. Newton Dee counts its lucky numbers with National Lottery Funding boost

n Aberdeen charity has received a major cash boost, after securing a £20,000 grant from the National Lottery Community Fund. Newton Dee, which supports adults with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs, can finally replace heating in its community hall - having previously relied on electric heaters. The hall is an invaluable space not just for Newton Dee residents, but those living in the wider area. Jake Vollrath, Senior Coworker at Newton Dee, has welcomed the good news. “Thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Community Fund, we can now move ahead with this essential upgrade without compromising the services we provide,” he said. The grant comes at a pivotal moment for the charity, which has recently launched a £2 million fundraising campaign to build a new bakery facility, where residents will be able to learn new skills and embrace sustainable plans for the future.

Separation doesn’t always have to end in a stressful court battle. More and more families are opting for the collaborative family law process, where both parties instruct collaboratively trained solicitors to work towards a resolution. Collaborative family law offers separating parties the ability to come together to find a resolution, assisted by solicitors and, where applicable, other experts like financial advisors. Both parties and their solicitors sign an agreement to remove the threat of court from the table. This doesn’t mean that you give up any rights to go to court at a later date, but you would have to instruct a new solicitor to do so. Without the looming threat of court, couples often find it easier to negotiate and listen to the other person’s point of view. The signed agreement demonstrates a commitment on everyone’s part to negotiate in good faith.

The collaborative process is conducted in a respectful manner, as amicably as possible and with a shared focus on each other’s needs - both now and in the future, particularly where children are involved. It’s about finding a resolution that works in the interests of both parties.

Why choose it? The collaborative approach often means that parties feel more heard and it also allows more creative resolutions that benefit all parties and are tailored to your individual family needs, rather than being bound by the confines of the sometimes- limited court orders available to you. The collaborative process considers not just the legal points but also practical elements of each parties’ lives moving forward, as well as the emotional side of the case as well. Couples going through this process generally find they have a much more therapeutic outcome. And co-parents typically achieve a far better co-parenting relationship, too.

The first is about thinking of others - a little kindness goes a long way to helping wildlife get through the winter and makes us feel good as a result. Create a Wildlife Haven: Keep bird feeders topped up with fat balls and seeds, and ensure birdbaths are clear of ice (or have fresh water) and are kept clean. Encouraging and keeping your garden’s birdlife and wildlife healthy helps to provide a balanced ecosystem. Birds are natural slug and snail controllers, they disperse seeds, pollinate plants, cycle nutrients in your soil and watching them interact and busy about your garden is just a joy to see. Create shelter in your garden such as log piles or leaf piles at the back of the border for hedgehogs, frogs and insects too and you have positively contributed to an incredibly important, dynamic biological community.

Prune Roses and Fruit Bushes January and February are the ideal time to prune dormant deciduous trees, shrubs, roses, apple/pear trees, gooseberries, and currant bushes. If you focus on the structure of the plants before new leaves emerge this encourages healthy new growth and a better harvest in the coming

seasons….and makes you feel good! Interestingly, Wisteria (climbing plant) requires two prunings within the gardening year, once in July/August and the other Jan/February when shoots and branches should be pruned to inhibit lateral growth and encourage flowering. And last - Tool TLC & Garden Tidy-Up: Clean, sharpen, and oil your pruning tools. This makes future gardening jobs so much easier. Sharp cutting tools makes for cleaner wounds and therefore reduces disease, as does making sure old soil is removed to prevent plant pathogens from infecting next seasons plants. There is something hugely satisfying about making your garden look good and preparing for the next growing season – Spring and it’s just around the corner!

We all need a little inspiration in the garden at this time of year – AND something to look forward to. Whilst the dark nights are still with us and temperatures down, there are some uplifting things we can do now that brings enjoyment through the last months of winter where we see the benefits in spring, summer and autumn.

Planting something special for the New Year ahead This is the perfect way to induce happiness. Bare rooted deciduous trees of all manner can be planted between end of November to end of March and if we get some mild weather and the ground isn’t frozen/still has some warmth in it, you can plant bare rooted hedging and shrubs too. Why not celebrate this new year with a new tree and have the enjoyment and excitement of watching it flourish as the months and seasons go by, or gift one to a friend or family. Marking occasions by planting a tree is a wonderful way of making memories.

My motherhood What does it mean to be a mother in 2026? I am proud to be raising my two boys whilst also working with the marvellous Trend Team. I am a mum in an era where we are told we can have it all, every mother I have come across is redefining what “all” really means. My Motherhood will shine a spotlight on a local mum, and share a little of her story along the way. First up we have the fabulous Claire Gregory. Mum to two beautiful boys, the 34-year-old recently launched Bosies. Her baby classes see her interact with more than 100 mums across City and Shire each week. “My boys are age five and two and a half, it’s been a very different experience second time round. There were no baby classes with my lockdown baby, so it feels lovely to now offer mums that kind of community. I love the connection

of motherhood, and the fact you can find someone going through the exact same thing at class. I only launched Bosies in November and there has been an overwhelming response. I really struggled postpartum because motherhood can be lonely. My hope is that the classes will enable mums to find their village, whilst bonding with their baby in a relaxed environment. I’ve always found that when times are tough and your little one gives you a wee smile, it puts everything in perspective. My classes are designed to be calming, and we always talk about our week through what I’ve termed ‘a win and a wobble.’ So many women I come across don’t think they are doing anything extraordinary, yet the way they take on life is incredible. Coastal Memories

otherhood, matriarchy and memories of the sea have all inspired Juliet Macleod on her remarkable journey as a talented potter. From a busy career spanning two decades as a graphic designer in London, to discovering a creative outlet in the midst of motherhood, Juliet has gone on to exhibit at Aberdeen Art Gallery and even taken up an artist residency on a remote Scottish island. Now based in Peterculter, she believes life has come full circle and her beautiful designs are often based on the North-east coastline. Trend caught up with Juliet to find out the story behind her business, The Cloud Pottery and the tales which have shaped it along the way.

an ancient kiln,” she said. “I set up a tiny studio in my utility room and I started practising. By the end of 2014 I had a thankfully bigger studio at the bottom of the garden. I still remember selling my very first piece, it was a fantastic feeling to have someone buy something I’d made.”

“I worked as a graphic designer in London for 20 years, we came to Aberdeen in 2010 just after the birth of our youngest child,” said Juliet. “I gave up work and I absolutely loved motherhood, but it felt like a creative wasteland. My husband suggested I did a short evening course at Gray’s and I selected ceramics, having already collected them for a great many years.” Juliet discovered an “instant affinity” with the potter’s wheel, from the physical forces at play to the autonomy which it gave her. At this stage however, she had no intention of turning her new found love into a second career. “The prospect of being self employed sounded wonderful, and I decided to invest in my own wheel after I was left some money by my aunt, and borrowed

The Cloud Pottery was born and aptly named after Juliet turned to the past for inspiration. “I never met my grandmother, but she was a wonderful woman,” she said. “She had a boat called The Cloud so it came from there, as a nod to the many strong women in my family.” Juliet bases many of her designs on the coast, having spent most of her childhood growing up close to the sea. “My father was in The Royal Navy so we were never far away from the coast,” she said. “My mother’s family came from Skye and my father-in-law came from North Uist, we visited the Hebrides every summer.” Juliet has spent a month on the island of Berneray for the last three years, where just over 100 people live all year round. Found between Harris and North Uist, the white sand beaches have influenced much of her work. Having moved to Aberdeen, Juliet discovered the joy of the North-east coastline, whether that be the rugged dunes of St Cyrus or the seal colony at Newburgh. “I can be fascinated by the tiniest shell, and the

many different bits of material you can find on the beach, whether that’s bits of plastic or sheep wool,” said Juliet. “I use techniques which my father taught me in his workshop, he died in 2019 and I love that I have these memories to shape my work.” Alongside high-profile exhibitions, Juliet believes one of her biggest highlights was to become a Selected Member of the Craft Potters Association. “That felt like a huge milestone to me, given that it is the most renowned pottery association in the UK,” she said. Juliet

also won a commission from Aberdeen Art Gallery and recently displayed her work there as part of the Tea Green market. The opportunity has enabled Juliet to sell her work face to face, which she much prefers due to the connections she can forge with customers. “Since the pandemic there’s been a re-embracing of craftsmanship and a greater understanding of what’s involved in making something by hand versus by machine,” she said. “It’s only by engaging in person that you can capture that value and context, and truly connect.” To find out more, visit julietmacleod.com

From the joy in helping people rediscover sound to the wonders of technology, Trend caught up with Jayne Bryce and found out why audiology is her lifelong passion.

was only 18 when I first came across the fascinating world of audiology, it was part of a pre-nursing course which was offered at my local hospital. The three-month placement saw me spend time across different wards and departments, including audiology. It was a young, friendly department and I loved my time there. Thankfully the feeling was mutual and when a student post came up, I was asked to apply. I studied on a day release basis at what was Salford Poly before going on to Manchester University. Although there are different ways to get into audiology, there isn’t a Bachelor of Science offered at any university here in Scotland. Unfortunately, this has contributed to a major shortage in audiologists.

learning opportunity that broadened my understanding of hearing technology and how it could best serve patients. My next adventure took me north to Aberdeen, where I joined my husband and his family in their established audiology practice. I actually met my husband at an audiology conference in the states; working together has reinforced the importance of personal service and family values in hearing care.

I trained at a busy North Manchester Hospital and worked closely with ENT consultants. Those early years were invaluable — from understanding the complexities of hearing loss to learning the importance of empathy and communication. I specialised in paediatric audiology, a role that taught me patience and the value of building trust. These lessons continue to shape my work today.

I opened my own practice in Aberdeen in 2014. For eleven wonderful years we thrived on Rose Street before we moved to our beautiful new home on Victoria Street — a space that reflects the warmth, professionalism and independence that defines everything we do. I’ve now worked in audiology for 38 years and there has been many a heartwarming story along the way, I feel truly blessed to have had such a rewarding, happy career.
