ISSUE N0. 106 | JUL / AUG 25
FROM THE
EDITOR Hello again, Summer’s here! It is now time to officially don a floral dress or a Breton striped top and some sandals – and maybe book a pedicure. July and August bring a wealth of opportunities to get out and about as there’s so much happening in the city and shire. The Tall Ships will fill the harbour with sails, music and family-friendly activities this July and the immersive Van Gogh exhibition at P&J Live should prove amazing. There are also so many other events, from Aberdeen’s multicultural Mela to outdoor theatre performances and special events. It feels like the city’s coming out of its winter slumbers for a few brief months of celebration. Let’s make the most of it. On a personal note, this will be the last edition of Trend that I’ll be involved in. As well as editing Trend, and being part of the magazine since the very first issue, I’ve always worked on a range of projects for industrial, energy and emerging technologies clients. One minute I’m suggesting suitable acquisition targets in the algae to biofuels sector, the next I’m writing about the best boots for autumn. Although I’ve had many offers to join companies over the years, it’s only now that one has cropped up that I feel I should pursue. Over the years, Trend has given me the opportunity to try a lot of things that I might not have experienced otherwise. I’m grateful as I doubt I’d have tried flying a helicopter, walking over hot coals or cruising the Caribbean if not for the magazine. I know I’m leaving you all in good hands and you’ll meet the new team in the next issue. I’ll miss you all, even the three people who pointed out where we’d made a typo. Even though I won’t be involved, I’ll still be an avid Trend reader. How else will I know what boots to buy? Love, Alison and everyone at Trend x All rights reserved. Meet Kara, Bloom’s jet-setting stylist Why is continued education so important in hairdressing? As a hairdresser, education has always been a big passion of mine. I love to teach. Styles and trends within hair colour, cutting and styling are forever changing. Every day new hair trends pop up online and in magazines, so continuing education is vital. What do you love most about working within a Salon group like Bloom? Bloom is absolutely beautiful to work in. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and there is a vibrant buzz daily. My clients love the friendly warm feeling. Within Bloom I teach my own Masterclasses for stylists from across Scotland. As I’m freelance, I have the freedom to take more time out to educate for hair colour brands and work at big styling events such as Fashion Week. After an exciting year so far, what’s next for you? I’m heading to Dubai - styling hair for a fashion event. After taking part in Paris Fashion Week this March, I have been asked to lead a hair team at New
York Fashion Week this September. I’m recruiting 30 hairstylists from all round the world, selecting who would make the best fit for this surreal opportunity - no pressure! What advice would you give to any hairdressers considering following your footsteps and exploring working on a freelance basis with Bloom Salon group? Going freelance can feel like a scary thought at first but that just shows that you care and are passionate about your work. If you love to work in a busy, friendly environment that will support you along the way then Bloom is the way to go. It’s the perfect balance of working as a big team with the added extras of training sessions, photoshoots, events, opportunities and a whole lot of support and encouragement along the way. Keep up to date with Kara’s journey and be the first to hear about her next education dates by following @karalouisehair Are you a hairdresser interested in joining the team at Bloom? Turn back time If there’s one beauty product we’d all buy, it’s a magic cream, serum or powder that would make us look ten years younger after a single application. Sadly, no such product exists, but there are lots of options that can help us turn back time… Start with a top class SPF. Ideally, you should have begun using this in your twenties and worn it even in fog, but it’s never too late to pick up good skincare habits. Treat Co stock Katherine Daniels’ Daily DNA Defence SPF30which offers broad-spectrum protection for your skin (UVA & UVB).

It’s blue light neutralising and pollution protection - plus it doubles as an exceptional make-up primer. Boosting collagen and elastic production is a great way of turning back the clock. There are lots of collagen drinks and supplements, but one option with proven results is the DermaPen. Martina Mackay of Aesthetic Beauty Inverurie explained, ‘I favour treatments which actually improve the underlying condition of the skin. Dermapen is a painless micro-needling treatment that encourages the skin’s natural healing capabilities
while stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. It’s better than fillers and it can also help with rosacea and acne and even stimulates hair regrowth. Another great anti-ager is Plasma Fibroblast Skin Tightening. It’s a non-surgical treatment that delivers plasma energy, improving facial lines and wrinkles, pores, photo-aging skin pigmentation and other skin irregularities. Fillers can help restore lost volume, which is increasingly common when using weight loss drugs. Essentially, the facial structures start to sag, but the careful use of fillers and anti-wrinkle injections
is an approach favoured by many. Dr Siobhan Hewson at The Terrace is known for her natural-looking results. Siobhan added, ‘The single thing that makes people look older than they are is skin quality and pigmentation. This can be treated by medical grade skin care and bio-stimulating injectables and skin boosters such as Sunekos and Profhilo. Our favourite and most effective treatment is full face structural rejuvenation and profiling with products such as Maili dermal fillers. We also find that daily use of red LED light therapy with currentbody face mask does wonders for keeping you youthful.’
Get summer ready with Treat Company We’re here to get you looking sensational for summer, from head to toe. Try our Katherine Daniels Daily DNA Defence SPF30. It’s a weightless coat of ‘skin’ armour, totally undetectable, yet providing outstanding UVA and UBV protection. Formulated with Active DNA Defence Enzymes which defend and repair your DNA from weather, pollution and blue light. Treat your tootsies to a pedicure. Opt for a simple file and polish for £15, all the way up to a luxuriously skin-softening paraffin wax pedicure with gels at £45, or try our callus peel treatments. For the ultimate in summer ready prep, try our special offer. Just £55 for our exfoliating velvet skin body treatment, followed by a tailed Spa facial. It’s 75 minutes of bliss.

gets a glow up Popular west end hairdresser Salon 70 has a fresh new look and a new name – SEVENTY. Owner Sarah-Jane Ironside explains what’s behind the rebranding…
‘I’ve been a hairdresser for twenty seven years. For the last few years I’d been considering moving premises, but then I realised that the place I truly belonged was right where I’ve always been. Rather than starting over, I chose to rebrand and truly make this salon my own - a reflection of who I am today and what I value most. ‘We have a loyal clientele who now feel more like friends, so I wanted to create a space that feels personal, calm, and inviting. Located in the heart of Aberdeen’s West End, our salon offers everything from colouring and extensions to men’s haircuts—but more importantly, we offer a warm, relaxed environment where
conversation flows as easily as the coffee. ‘This salon has been my second home for nearly three decades, and now it finally looks and feels like it. I absolutely love what I do, and I’m so lucky to spend my days doing it with such wonderful people.’ SEVENTY remains at the forefront of quality hairdressing in the city with a great reputation for flattering cuts and colour as well as the skilful use of hair extensions. SEVENTY is always friendly, welcoming and professional. SEVENTY will leave you looking and feeling great.

Balfour+Manson Aberdeen Marks 21 Years of Growth and Milestones
T
his year marks a significant milestone for Balfour+Manson’s Aberdeen office as we celebrate our 21st birthday — and what a year it has been. We’ve grown steadily over two decades, and the past 12 months have been among our most dynamic yet. We’re proud to have expanded our footprint beyond Aberdeen with new offices now open in Portlethen and Glasgow, bringing our trusted legal services closer to more clients across Scotland. Our growth isn’t just geographical — our team has grown too. We’ve welcomed five new staff
members this past year, each bringing fresh energy and expertise to our expanding practice. In a fitting twist of timing, our newest recruit joins us this June — the 21st team member to join the Aberdeen office in our 21st year. It’s a milestone that perfectly captures our journey: experienced, evolving, and full of potential. Another exciting development this year is our new partnership with Aberdeen Football Club. We’re delighted to now be the official legal partner of AFC — a collaboration that reflects
our shared commitment to excellence, integrity, and community. As we reflect on 21 years of serving clients across the North-east and beyond, we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved — and even more excited for what lies ahead. Whether it’s growing our team, strengthening community ties, or continuing to deliver outstanding legal support, we look forward to seeing where the next 12 months take us. Here’s to 21 years — and the start of another exciting chapter at Balfour+Manson Aberdeen.

Putting on the Glitz! ‘I had been drumming with wedding bands from the age of 12, so I’d gained a lot of experience as a performer and band leader. Now Glitz is my business as well as my passion,’ band owner, founder member and drummer Mairi Newberry explained. ‘Working with Kimberley Thompson, Beyoncé’s drummer, inspired me to create something really special for the city. We started with an all-female line up. Glitz has evolved over the past 14 years into a really tight, incredibly energetic eight piece collective. The band’s line-up are all highly experienced professional musicians rated as some of the best in the UK. Our wonderful singers Claire Wallis, Megan Wright and Ailsa Black are backed by Bogdan Bratis who was on
Romanian X factor, guitarist Lewis Davie who has toured a lot of the UK and our brass and percussion sections. We also have brass section of Kasabian and red hot chilli pipers ‘We mainly play corporate gigs, but we also play large weddings and events. As full time professional musicians, we go all out to make sure everyone has a really great time. ‘We’re easily the equal of any top-class London showband. We’ve invested a lot into our programming and production, so we can offer full AV and event production as well as incredible staging, lighting and even pyrotechnics. We help elevate events and make them truly special. In these times of budget restraint, it’s also
worth noting that we’re considerably more costeffective than bringing a band up over 500 miles! ‘Our goal is to make sure that guests have one of the best nights of their lives. We play all styles of music, with our own arrangements. Our sets last for up to three hours and our medleys and mashups really fill the dance floor whether it’s Seventies disco, rock, nineties, girl bands or even clubland anthems. ‘If you’re planning an event to remember then check out our website, where you can see the packages we offer.’ T. 07967 370956 E.info@glitzband.com Glitzband.com glitzbandofficial

Meet Riccardo Venditti
I
grew up in Italy in a family where food was at the heart of everything. Some of my earliest memories are of helping my father Franco in the kitchen, fascinated by how simple ingredients could be transformed into something magical. He had a passion for seeking out unique artisan products things you’d never find in a supermarket and for bringing people together around food. Cousins, uncles, friends, we would gather around the table on cold winter days or eat under the stars in summer, with the smell of barbecue or fresh seasonal fruit filling the air. My dad’s my biggest influence. Thanks to him, I’m inspired by chefs who respect ingredients, who understand seasonality, and who cook with heart not just technique or prestige.
Executive Chef, Amarone My grandfather had a small farm, and I still remember going into the fields to pick vegetables like lettuce and tomatoes, or fresh fruit to bring home for dinner. Those are unforgettable memories nothing compares to the feeling of harvesting something alive with your own hands. That connection to the land is something I miss deeply today. After completing culinary school, I moved to Scotland at 19. I worked my way up through the restaurant world, always hungry to learn more whether through others or by teaching myself. I believe in combining tradition with creativity without limits. That mind set brought me to Amarone, a place where I can express that balance every day.

At Amarone, we stay true to authentic Italian flavours while presenting them with a modern twist. We don’t try to reinvent Italian cuisine, we respect it. But we elevate it with creativity, care and excellent ingredients. Each dish on our menu has its own story and identity, and I make sure to keep things fresh and evolving so neither our guests nor I ever get bored! What makes the restaurant truly special is the atmosphere: elegant but relaxed, stylish yet warm – a place where guests feel genuinely welcome and enjoy what we create. It’s a great feeling. I love spending time with my kids. Being a father keeps me grounded and reminds me what really matters. I’m also passionate about running, playing football, and mindfulness. I don’t follow diets, I believe in a sustainable healthy lifestyle that keeps me balanced physically and mentally. I’m always looking to learn and grow every day, to be the best version of myself not only for me but for my children, who give me the greatest motivation of all. 257 Union Street, Aberdeen, AB11 6BR 01224 590300

Families are unique, with their specific assets, values and vision for their wealth and what they want to achieve, so it makes sense that each family should have its own bespoke family wealth plan that is personal to them and their goals. Through working with many families over the years we have recognised how important it is for clients to have a team of experts collaborating to consider financial, tax and legal factors that may impact them when thinking about the purpose of their wealth and transferring it to the next generation. Recent research confirms that the majority of wealth transfers throughout the world are likely to fail.* We are focused on changing this, which is why we have designed a bespoke family wealth service, that families can engage with, knowing their collective ambitions for their wealth and successful wealth transfers are at the centre of their wealth plan. Whether families wish to have a shared purpose for their wealth or plan individually but in coordination, we can build a plan, considering tax and investment strategies that will optimise and protect wealth throughout the generations, while ensuring both financial independence and interdependence are aligned.
Whether the focus is tax optimisation, a life transition such as a sale of a business, protection of the wealth, or philanthropy, at Acumen Family Wealth we appreciate the challenges families may face and are able to guide clients through various considerations, opportunities and challenges. Through our experience of advising families, we are able to offer multi-generational planning, including preparing the younger generations for their future roles, while at the same time collaborating with the family’s other advisers to ensure all considerations are met in order to achieve the family’s shared purpose and legacy for their wealth. By Ruth Aberdein, Partner and Head of Family Law at Aberdein Considine The school summer holidays are here and many separated couples will be juggling childcare and trips away between them. Here are some of the most common questions we hear about taking children on holiday Do I need the consent of my children’s other parent to take my children abroad? In short, yes. If the other parent refuses to provide their consent, you can’t take your children abroad unless you obtain a court order, known as a specific issue order. If you’re the parent considering withholding your consent, think about why you’re doing so. Any decisions regarding children should be based solely on what’s in their best interests. If the planned holiday is to a safe location, the children are happy to go, they’re well looked after by the other parent and full details of the trip have been provided to you, there would have to be a very good reason to justify withholding your consent. Can I stop the other parent from taking my children abroad with his new partner? When the other parent has a new partner, this scenario can understandably feel difficult, especially if you don’t have a lot of information about the new partner. If this is a concern, it’s worth exploring these issues with the other parent and perhaps arranging an introduction
prior to the holiday. Look at matters objectively, putting your children’s welfare first. Try not to base your decision not to consent on any personal ill will between you and the other parent and/or their new partner. What if my children’s other parent wants to take them abroad in term time? Taking children out of school for a holiday is discouraged by local authorities. Schools can grant authorised leave in exceptional circumstances, like a family wedding or where work commitments prevent travelling at other times, but this is the exception rather than the rule. If you refuse to give consent, the children’s other parent would have to apply to the Court for a specific issue order, asking for permission for the holiday.

Designs on Chelsea Kirsty MacLean shares the latest trends from the garden show…
GARDENS | 43
F
rom Japanese Tea Garden to Dog Garden, Chelsea Flower Show wowed us this year with a fantastic diversity of show gardens but what struck me as a common theme was a clear trend toward more natural garden design with water, lush and informal planting. Many of the show gardens used surprising materials such as Mycelium, the root-like structure of fungi which was used to construct panels and on sculptures. Mycelium panels, created by furniture maker Sebastian Cox, are a sustainable and biodegradable material, made by inoculating wood chips with mushroom spores. In the Pathway Garden, mycelium was grown on recycled materials to create monolithic sculptures, acting as living metaphors for transformation and showcasing sustainable design. In my own practice, whilst there are still many clients who enjoy very structured designs, I do see a greater desire to create a more natural feel, especially in the planting. Whilst there was a lot of colour at Chelsea, I’m seeing a trend toward soft, natural-coloured rattans, sage greens, timber and other organic materials. In such an unsettled world, the garden becomes a place of tranquillity. Nature, sustainability and biodiversity are very much at the forefront of current garden design trends. Many
clients are choosing eco-friendly growing practices and thinking about what promotes wildlife best and protects it. Planting choices are promoting this and the approach toward design is much more naturalistic and relaxed, generally. Choices also seem much more practical and functional, with a leaning towards edible landscaping. There is a clear desire to create a peaceful and relaxing haven that feeds the soul and promotes good mental health and healing. The colours, whilst perhaps vibrant, are balanced by the earth tones and greater consideration toward what materials are used, with a leaning toward the use of natural fibres. It seems that many want to embrace nature as it is rather than trying to tame it and in doing so are finding the benefit of the harmony this approach brings. I don’t think we all have to run out and plant wildflowers everywhere and never cut our grass, we need to find the balance that is right for each of us, but we can perhaps relax our approach a little and consider our priorities differently to ensure we are working in harmony with what is the most incredible, awe-inspiring, diverse, fascinating and resilient natural world, allowing ecosystems to survive and thrive in our gardens that enrich our lives and with very little effort!

I’m a mum of two living and working in Westhill. I came to Aberdeen after my doctorate to work on midge research then became a freshwater ecologist for SEPA. When I had my first child, I was also struggling with chronic Lyme disease. When I recovered sufficiently to be able to work again, turning my ceramics hobby into a business offered a family-friendly opportunity. My first few fairs were fairly disastrous! I loved working with clay so much, and the idea of having my own wee business made me happy. I was offered a place at an Etsy local fair organised by Laura Bremner of Juniper Press. I’ll never forget being absolutely delighted at coming home with over £500. My husband, the kids and I are all very into the outdoors and we’re blessed with such beautiful countryside to explore. I’m also an enthusiastic member of Mid Grampian Mesolithic and Mesolithic Deeside. We look for evidence of Scotland’s earliest inhabitants. Unsurprisingly, I get very excited if we unearth some pottery fragments!
My studio is the large conservatory at the back of the house, and I have a kiln in the garage. I’m often found working in my pyjamas late at night, or unloading the smoke firing in my slippers! I find handling clay to be incredibly soothing and carving into leather hard clay is one of the most satisfying things in the world. Ceramics is technically challenging. So many things can and do go wrong. Ceramics teaches you Zen-like levels of acceptance of failure and perseverance. Quite a lot of things end up in the bucket of doom, to be recycled. I find a lot of inspiration in coasts and the sea. I kayak, when I can, and most Mondays I swim and have a sauna at Aberdeen beach. I love nothing more than a beach walk, picking up wee treasures. I hand build, rather than use a wheel. I’ll usually make my ideas it straight away in clay, thinking about the glaze and finish at the start. I’ll make a few of a new design and use them in my own kitchen to ensure they are robust and truly functional. I like to come up with one or two new product lines each year, usually retiring one or two old ones. This keeps my work fresh and
interesting for me and my customers. Aberdeen Art Gallery has been my happy place since the renovations. If I have a day to myself, I’ll take myself off to the gallery as a treat. I felt there could be more childfriendly attractions in the gallery, to keep their interest, so I’m really happy to have been asked to create The Craitur Trail - a spotter trail of 17 little creatures for kids to seek out as they tour the gallery. Each craitur has its own little story and I had a blast making them. They’re designed to encourage children to look more closely at the items in the room and think about them. The Craitur Trail is due to open this summer. I’ll be exhibiting at the Tea Green Fair at the Art Gallery on August 16th and 17th . You can also find my work in Rooted, the houseplant and homewares shop on Rosemount Place and I do sometimes list items on my website, sealceramics.com You can find out more about what I’ve been making and which fairs are coming up at instagram. com/nicola_seal and facebook.com/ sealceramics

f you fancy a short city break in the sun, then Marrakech should definitely make your shortlist. It’s not so much a city as an overload for the senses. It’s where mint tea is a ritual, every tile is a design moment, and the air smells like rose petals, petrol and possibility. For the seasoned traveller, Marrakech is equal parts magic and mayhem. If you’re a keen shopper and not afraid to haggle, then the glittering maze of stalls in the Medina is a place to flex your bargaining muscles. You’ll go in looking for a scarf and come out with spices, lanterns, and no idea why you
thought you really, really needed to buy a camel saddle stool. For something more curated, Tissir Jewellery is a must — exquisite Berber and North African pieces that look fabulous with linen trousers and scream haute boho global citizen. For skincare that smells like a desert sunrise, pop into Herbalism Marrakech, where white-coated herbalists will explain the virtues of argan oil and mysterious black soap while you nod seriously and buy three of each. Speaking of black soap — no trip is
complete without a hammam. Yes, you will be scrubbed within an inch of your dignity, but the glow is real. As is the discovery that you’re rather more grubby that you realised. Try Hammam Rosa Bonheur for vintage glam, Isis Spa for quiet luxe, or Alpheus Spa if you like your exfoliation with a hint of minimalism. You’ll leave lighter, brighter, and wondering why you ever paid £70 for a facial that didn’t come with a steam room and a powerful masseuse with the forearms of an MMA fighter. Marrakech isn’t just lanterns and lounging. The city’s cultural treasures are unmissable. Musée Yves Saint Laurent offers a chic homage to the designer’s deep Moroccan love affair. Nearby, Jardin Majorelle — all cobalt blues and tropical cool — is Instaheaven. Wander the lavish Bahia Palace, and don’t miss the old medina’s faded grandeur, where history clings to the walls like jasmine in the air.

Aizar and the stylishly global TheMix, to La Terrasse de la Brillante (equal parts terrace and self-esteem boost), there’s no shortage of spots where the view is as good as the food. If tagine fatigue sets in, Pointbar offers top-tier burgers and pasta, while Fluffy at the Medina Mall serves crepes, tacos and the joyfully absurd Le Fluffy Burger — which somehow tastes better when ordered in GCSE-level French. Unlike Paris, the Moroccan approach to tourist French is wonderfully unjudgemental and you’ll be encouraged even if your restaurant requests are delivered with some trepidation and a Doric growl.
Mountains for Berber villages and crisp air, or marvel at the Ouzoud Waterfalls, where rainbows regularly show up uninvited. If you’re feeling adventurous, or in the midst of a mid-life crisis, try sandboarding in the dunes. It’s like snowboarding — only warmer when you fall over, and the après-ski is mint tea under the stars. Marrakech is a glorious contradiction: ancient yet modern, serene yet chaotic, dusty yet dazzling. You’ll return with glowing skin, the determination to replant the garden and paint the house blue, and a suitcase full of bartered bargains.

ix weeks is a long, and potentially very expensive, time to keep small humans amused. The days of just sending kids outside with a bicycle and some sweets at the start of July and only seeing them when they got hungry or it was time to shop for new school shoes are long gone. In fact, most kids aren’t allowed to go anywhere by themselves or with friends until they are in their teenage years. Roaming free may be a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t tons of interesting activities and adventures available this summer… Get the holidays off with a bang. The Ministry of Science Show (also at the Tivoli, 24 July) offers a high-octane blend of explosions, experiments, and educational fun. In a similar vein, the hands-on exhibits at the Aberdeen Science Centre keep all ages engaged. Keep the theme going with a visit to the Art Gallery, where Macduff Marine Aquarium will be bringing touch pools and hosting
talks about creatures from the deep, followed by a cheap day out at one of the region’s many beaches, where rock pools will take on a whole new fascination. If encouraging your children to run away to join the circus appeals – as it may well do before the new terms kicks off - Circus Vegas will pitch up in Aberdeen from 25 July to 12 August, while Zippo’s Circus brings its brand of thrills to both Peterhead and Stonehaven this summer. One of the best bargains is on offer at Aberdeen Sports Village. Their Holiday Camps run weekly from 7 July to mid-August, offering a variety of sporty fun — from swimming to gymnastics — to burn off that boundless energy. You can even add in a package where lunch is provided. Embrace the simple joys of summer with free or low-cost activities, try baking, Gardening, DIY, or
craft sessions at home. Hobbycraft is good for kits and online classes. Explore the city’s parks and playgrounds. Don’t miss Duthie Park’s talking cactus, have a play on the swings or pack a picnic for Hazlehead Park’s woods and animal corner. Don’t miss the Tall Ships at the harbour from 19–22 July. Marvel at these magnificent vessels, take part in shore side activities, and soak up a festival atmosphere that’s truly special.
ON YOUR MARKS. GET SET.
Likewise, don’t miss Aberdeen Mela One World Day — a joyful celebration of global culture, community and music, with some pretty good food trucks. Younger children will adore the Teddy Bears’ Picnic at Banff Castle (6 August), or a visit to The Gonks of Gardenshillock Summer Storybook Trail. All in all, this could be a summer to remember.

T
he north east of Scotland has its fair share of castles. Whether you like the stark military fortress of Corgarff, Dunnottar’s infinite steps and precarious cliff-side perch or the Disneyesque Craigievar, there’s something to suit every taste. That said, Crathes Castle, gardens and estate appeals to visitors and locals alike. This National Trust for Scotland gem offers a perfect mix of grandeur, glorious gardens and lots of woodland walks to explore with the family. Better yet, it’s just half an hour from Aberdeen and you can go shopping at Milton of Crathes or Banchory while you’re in the neighbourhood.
The honeyed harled granite castle was built in the 16th century for the Burnett family, who held it for over 350 years. It’s a great example of a Scottish tower house, complete with elaborate painted ceilings dating back to the early 1600s. It’s filled with family portraits, tapestries, copper pans, mellow oak panelling and heavy antique furniture that must be a pain to dust. There’s even a resident ghost in the form of the Green Lady. While the castle is undeniably captivating, it’s outside where Crathes really comes alive. The walled gardens, divided into a

series of distinct rooms, are a riot of colour, texture, and scent – all meticulously designed, constantly evolving and lovingly maintained. There are ponds with carnivorous plants, a woodland garden, colour themed gardens and some beautifully kept working Victorian glasshouses. Some of the yew hedges which provide structure in the walled garden date back over three centuries and the gardens are famous for their topiary. If you find cutting your own hedge a chore, pity the gardeners who spend around six weeks a year high up on mobile work platforms. So renowned are these gardens that they’re considered to be amongst the top 50 gardens to visit in the world. A must-see is the recently redeveloped Rose Garden, a hazy perfumed sanctuary, gently buzzing with bees from the nearby apiary. If you’re visiting in July or August, don’t miss the June Border. Despite the name, it’s still gloriously in bloom well into high summer, with dazzling lupins, poppies and a painter’s palette of perennials putting on an exuberant show. In fact, there’s always something worth seeing no matter the season. The estate at Crathes is great for wildlife. Red squirrels scurry in the branches, woodpeckers drum industriously, and the occasional roe deer might be glimpsed through the trees if you’re quiet—or lucky—enough. Often one of the local farmers turns his Highland Cattle out in a field off the drive too. The wider estate boasts a network of woodland walks, perfect for a reflective solo stroll or an energetic ramble with the family and the dog. There are two playgrounds on-site, suitable for even the most sugar-high children. The café offers welcome refreshment, from decent coffee to hearty soups and freshly baked cake and there’s plenty of outdoor seating for alfresco dining. You can also use the picnic areas if you’d rather bring your own feast. There’s always something going on over the summer, from family fun weekends, special tours and even carriage rides with magnificent Clydesdale horses. Whether you’re a history buff, a budding horticulturalist, looking for a place to let the kids run wild, or just in search of a café and gift shop, Crathes won’t disappoint.

MEET MARCLIFFE’S REBECCA BLAIR
I
grew up in Fife, not far from St Andrews. My godfather was a groundskeeper on the Old Course — although despite his best efforts, my golf game is still absolutely hopeless! I live near Inverurie with my two gorgeous boys and a pair of cheeky border collies. Life is spent running between clubs, birthday parties and dog walks. Throw in the gym, good food and a glass of wine, and that’s pretty much me.
working under the brilliant Lynn Hedley. I quickly realised how much I enjoy the buzz of building relationships, delivering results, and being part of a hotel’s heartbeat. I joined Hilton on Park Lane as Assistant Director of Sales. It was a huge step up and shaped so much of how I work today.
My first hospitality job was washing dishes at 15 — it was a total baptism of fire,
I joined Marcliffe in October 2024 and walked in with a proper spring in my step. It’s a privilege to represent such an iconic property, and even more exciting to be part of a new chapter for the hotel. We’ve got

the minute they walk in the door — that warm, genuine hospitality, and I knew I wanted to be part of it. The team here are something special. There’s a couthy, familiar warmth to the way we do things, and that doesn’t happen by chance. Earlier this year we introduced the Shine Programme, a bespoke training and induction plan to make sure everyone is aligned on what five-star service means to us and our guests. Every new team member now goes through it before they even start. It’s been a game-changer in building consistency and pride across every department. One of my biggest challenges is also one of the greatest privileges — our guests’ deep emotional connection to the hotel. Marcliffe has loyal, longstanding customers who return time and time again because of the high standards and warm service they’ve come to expect. It means we’re always working to protect that trust while growing and evolving the brand. But that challenge is exactly what drives me.
