Brows on point

What we’d give for the perfect brow, from the on-point arch to just the right thickness! Eyebrows frame our face, and getting those brows spot on can change your entire look. If you fell victim to the pencil thin brows of the Nineties, we understand. Have your poor brows never quite recovered from aggressive over-plucking? Trend is here to help; there’s plenty of options available and we’ve rounded up some expert tips plus some magic products to give you the brows of your dreams.

Brow specialist Harley Somerville has been shaping brows for the past decade and believes there is not a one size fits all approach. Based at Dandello in Aberdeen and The Beauty Studio in Portlethen, she recommends a consultation so you can settle on the right treatment. “If you already have a great brow then regular tinting and

waxing could be all that’s needed,” she says. Harley also offers brow lamination if you’re in need of extra volume, or henna brows for sparse hair. Microblading can be fantastic if you’re experiencing brow loss, whether that be from overplucking or chemotherapy. As for those magic products, Harley rounded up her top three. We have the Benefit Gimme Brow – great for adding volume. Next up is HD Brows Precision Pencil – perfect for defining and shaping. And finally, the NYX Cosmetics Brow Pen – ideal for creating realistic, hair-like strokes. Follow Harley on Instagram _browswitharley_

Did you know there is such a thing as a brow lift? Well placed temple filler can help reframe your brow and is on offer with Dr Siobhan Hewson of Terrace Aesthetics in Aberdeen terraceaesthetics.co.uk

Brenda Cardno of Treat Company in Fraserburgh can offer precise eyebrow sculpting, with all treatments detailed over at treatcompany.co.uk

Brenda uses LYCOJET EyeBrow hot wax, which removes hairs as short as 1mm with minimal pain. Tinting the brows can make them appear fuller, and Sculpted Brows is also a popular treatment to create a natural look. “This treatment refines and defines eyebrows to create a polished, well-groomed appearance,” says Brenda. “It uses methods like mapping, waxing, tweezing, and tinting to achieve symmetry and structure that complements facial features. The goal is to enhance natural beauty by creating a balanced, defined brow shape that frames the eyes and face.”

So, there you have it, may your brows be raised in perfection this autumn.

Scotland’s first sober bar launching in Aberdeen this autumn

Local entrepreneur Kate Kenyon has launched a bar with a difference, with not a drop of alcohol to be served at the trendy spot on Thistle Street. SOBR will offer a safe space and play host to other independent businesses after Kate, who is from Turriff spotted a gap in the market. None alcoholic wines, beers, cocktails and even birthday shots will all be available, only without the hangover.

Visitors will also be able to sample snacks from local producers, alongside coffee and seasonal mocktails. Kate was inspired to launch the exciting

new venture after fellow friends went teetotal. She has also twice been the recipient of a kidney transplant and rarely drinks alcohol as a result.

“The vision is to have a community feel and bring the small businesses of Aberdeen together,” says Kate. “It’s a place for people to feel safe and included while still having an amazing night with great company, it’s something unique for the city.”

Aberdeen Arts Centre hits major cash milestone

Campaigners are continuing in their efforts to save Aberdeen Arts Centre and have reached a major milestone – by raising more than £100,000 so far. Plans to secure the future of the venue have been ongoing since May, after vital funding could not be secured.

Aberdonians have since rallied together, and some famous faces have even voiced their support. Call The Midwife star Laura Main, who plays Shelagh Turner in the popular series, featured in many performances at the venue as a teenager. She

credited her experience as a key factor in her decision to pursue acting, having debuted on stage in 1990 in a production of Annie. Laura returned for a tour of her old stomping ground in June and met with numerous members of the Aberdeen Arts Centre team.

The site has been home to grassroots theatre for more than six decades and fundraiser Julia Smith remains hopeful that it will continue for many years to come. “The local performing community has been incredible at every level,” she said. “Aberdeen Arts Centre

has touched so many lives, and we are honoured that many of those people – from all walks of life – have put their hands in their pockets to help.”

Chef focus

Meet Matthew Moore
Executive Chef, Macdonald Norwood Hall

Iwas lucky enough to live in both Germany and the Middle East whilst growing up, my family travelled a lot. Although I’m inspired by world cuisine and professionals held in high regard across the industry – my biggest inspiration is someone much closer to home. It was my grandma’s hearty homestyle cooking which remains my biggest influence today. You can’t beat classic dishes made with love and fresh local ingredients.

It has certainly contributed to my own style in the kitchen, which I’d best describe as modern Scottish. I also really enjoy preparing traditional Japanese dishes, eating them is the best bit!

I love leading the team during a busy service when it’s all hands-on deck, and the cooking itself of course. There’s nothing better than a busy kitchen where there’s a fast pace, a quiet day just isn’t for me. I think that could be said for a lot of chefs, we thrive under pressure whilst also doing what we love. When it comes to the end of a long shift where we’ve served plenty of satisfied guests, we like to keep things

simple. It all goes back to that homestyle cooking, because my team currently love tucking into cheese on toast.

A real highlight for me is getting this far, I’m so proud to be the Executive Chef at such a fantastic venue. It means I can mentor and train the next generation of young chefs, which I absolutely relish. It’s so important to nurture the talent of tomorrow, and to invest in those up and coming in the hospitality industry. It’s only by taking the time that you can help young chefs to grow. I always tell them that you shouldn’t be afraid of making a mistake, I’ve made plenty in my time. Change the way you look at it. Don’t dwell on what went wrong and instead use the opportunity to learn.

Cooking is always on my mind, so even if I’m not working I can normally be found creating new dishes. Failing that, you’ll find me in the countryside walking my dog. That’s when I switch off, if only for a little while.

By Isabelle Douglas, Why are pre-marriage/ pre-partnership agreements important?

Entering a marriage or civil partnership imposes significant legal consequences upon individuals. The law defines matrimonial property and directs how this should be divided upon separation. To avoid the potential implications of this, intended spouses or civil partners can enter into a pre-marriage/pre-partnership agreement. A carefully constructed pre-marriage contract can:

1. Protect pre-marital assets

While assets accrued before marriage are generally excluded from matrimonial property, if changes are made to the nature of the asset during the marriage, it may be converted into matrimonial property. To avoid this, a premarriage contract can state which assets will never be considered matrimonial property regardless of changes. This allows the asset owner to dispose of or invest it as they wish.

2. Protect wealth inherited or gifted during the marriage

Assets gifted by third parties or inherited during the marriage are excluded from matrimonial property. However, if the gifted or inherited assets are changed in nature during the marriage, then they could be converted into matrimonial property. A pre-marriage contract can expressly state that this will not happen.

3. Protect business interests

The contract can specify how business interests will be dealt with on separation, for example how share ownership or profits are treated.

4. Protect against debts

If one person enters the marriage or civil partnership with significant debts, a pre-marriage contract can ensure the other partner is not held responsible for those debts if they separate.

5. Protect future income

A pre-marriage contract can specify how future income is to be treated upon separation, including bonuses, interest and rental income.

6. Provide certainty

Individuals can relax, knowing their assets are protected, with some certainty about their financial position after separation. Reaching agreement while both partners are still on good terms could prevent lengthy disputes or costly litigation later. Remember that to be robust to challenge, any agreement must be fair and reasonable, drafted with legal advice and without pressure to sign.

Hopein bloom

Our gardening expert Kirsty McLean gives us her advice on what to do for Autumn in our gardens

As our gardens transition from late summer to autumn, there is much to be done. September is ideal for planting winter salads, broad beans or early harvest for next spring alongside late-season harvesting. Think potatoes, late-season plums or any left-over apples. October is a good time to divide and cut back perennials, prune roses (after flowering), and transplant plants that need to be moved. It’s also a good time to plant trees & large shrubs, especially toward the end of the month when the ground is still warm. With wetter months on the way, mother nature can help roots establish without the need for manual watering. Bare-rooted and root-ball trees and plants become available from late October to the end of March depending on temperature, offering a cost-effective option with better growing conditions.

This is the perfect time of year to plant your bulbs for next season. With a bit of planning, bulbs are a fantastic and economical way of getting continuous colour into the garden throughout the seasons. Daffodils, Crocuses, Hyacinths and Snowdrops all come to mind. If you use annuals in pots and borders, changing these out for winter pansies and violas is a great way to have colour through to next spring.

Putting the garden to bed for the winter brings mixed emotions because it signals the end of summer. But we all need a rest, even our gardens. Tidy up borders and mulch with organic matter round plants that may need a little winter protection. This practice helps to suppress weeds next growing season and feeds the soil with essential nutrients.

This is a good time to apply an autumn lawn feed to strengthen the grass for winter and promote healthy growth in spring. Aerate the lawn to improve drainage and air circulation by puncturing the surface. You can get a tool for this, but using a fork and sticking it in all over the lawn will do just as well. Adding a layer of sharp sand can be especially helpful for compacted or clay soil with poor drainage.

There are of course some trees and plants that come to life at this time of year, lifting our spirits in the darker months. Viburnum tinus is evergreen with scented delicate blooms, and flowers from August/September through to the following late spring. Lonicera x purpusii or Lonicera fragrantissima with their fragrant, delicate and creamy-white flowers can be seen from December to March. Witch hazel with its unusual ribbon-like and fragrant flowers come in shades of yellow, orange and red. Or, for something larger – Prunus x subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’, a winter-flowering Cherry. It’s always a tonic to spy the pale pink petals against grey skies.

It’s heartening to know that whilst our gardens are being allowed to rest in the colder months, there are pockets of life that we can plant now which will provide us with interest and scent through the winter and beyond.

The story behind Jane Keenan Design

I studied Printed Textiles at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee, then headed to London to work as a stylist for Habitat. Life was fast and creative — just how I liked it. But at 30, my husband and I moved back to Aberdeen to start a family, and everything changed when our first son, Riley, was born. Complications during birth left him with cerebral palsy and significant learning difficulties. I gave up my full-time career to focus on being a mum. I am now mum to three boys, and Riley is a cheeky happy 17 year old.

For years, creativity took a back seat — until I took a weekend printmaking course at Peacock Printmakers. It completely reignited something in me. I began taking part in NEOS (North East

Open Studios) and eventually set up a studio in a barn on my in-laws’ farm in New Deer.

Just before a Christmas event, the barn flooded. I nearly cancelled but spotted a tiny shop for rent in the next village. I called on a whim, asked to rent it for the weekend — and ended up staying. Five and a half years later, I’m still there, running my own shop in Maud.

My work is inspired by the countryside around me — from moody abstract landscapes in oil to finely detailed floral illustrations. As a textile designer, I love adapting my art into lampshades, cushions, and homewares. I also create a range of hand-poured candles, diffusers, soaps, and lotions in the workshop above my shop.

Though I stock pieces by other UK artists, the focus is on my own work — and I love the variety. One week I’m making lampshades, the next I’m making candles or preparing for an exhibition. A real career highlight has been my artist residency at Pitmedden Garden, a beautiful National Trust site in Aberdeenshire. The colours, flowers, and butterflies there are endlessly inspiring, and my work is now exhibited in their Hayloft Gallery within the gardens.

Inhale Deeply

What is is the first thing visitors notice when they cross the threshold to your home? Not the quirky doormat or carefully hung picture, it’s actually the smell which can make or break that first impression! Whether you have some heavily scented furry companions or

pongy football boots in the hallway, we have you covered with some gorgeous autumnal scents. From candles to diffusers, the right aroma really can set the tone. And if you want to feel cosy as the dark nights close in, choosing a comforting scent can make a big difference.

Howay to Northumberland

We’re off to the north-east, but not as you know it. If you’re in search of rich history and stories entwined with changing tides, look no further than a trip across the border. Welcome to Northumberland, where you’ll find a breathtaking mix of romantic castles framed against the beautiful coastline and enthralling tales from the past. From visiting a tidal island to a deadly garden, pack comfortable shoes for the ultimate Geordie adventure.

First on the list is The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, home to St Cuthbert who allegedly held the power of spiritual healing. Regardless of your beliefs, it’s difficult not to feel moved and indeed healed as you gulp the bracing sea air and soak in remnants of a remarkable past. Much of Holy Island’s appeal comes from the fact that it is only accessible twice a day due to the tide. Your visit is therefore dictated by nature, don’t get caught out and check safe crossing times in advance before the causeway becomes inaccessible.

You can explore the sacred ruins of the 12th century Lindisfarne Priory, believed to be the epicentre of

Christianity in Anglo Saxo times and home to St Oswald. Pause to take in rainbow bridge, so named because it stretches towards what would once have been a magnificent tower. Lindisfarne Castle is proudly perched on a rocky plateau and will further spark your imagination. The island remains a place of pilgrimage and is home to an array of wildlife, including wildfowl which are best spotted in autumn.

There’s some gorgeous coffee shops and you can even stay the night on Lindisfarne. Drink in the stunning coastal scenery as you travel onwards to the magnificent Bamburgh Castle. It has stood guard above the coastline for more than 1,400 years and remains home to myth, legend and everything in-between. Solem witness to a succession of kings over the passing centuries, Bamburgh has been carefully preserved both inside and out. Marvel at King’s Hall and the State Rooms before venturing out to Battery Terrace with its views towards the Farne Islands and of course Holy Island.

If you’ve still not sated your thirst for history, Alnwick Castle is the final

jewel in the crown. This sprawling pile remains home to the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland and has been owned by the Percy family since 1309. Downton Abbey, Transformers and Harry Potter have all used Alnwick during filming, and you can take your very own flying lesson reminiscent of Potter’s broomstick scene.

A visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the poison garden, so aptly named as it boasts more than 100 toxic plants. If you’ve a love of botany combined with a slither of sinister, book onto a tour where you can learn more about the infamous deadly nightshade. For those travelling with little ones, the mystical adventure playground of Lilidorei is a must see. A playground like no other, there’s an impressive play structure alongside a whimsical elf village where you’ll find Secret Keepers- who are charged with immersive storytelling to suit all ages.

Northumberland is truly stunning all year round and leaves a lasting impression with its chocolate box villages and pristine beaches. Pack for every season and don’t be surprised if you find yourself yearning to return.

Ifyougodown tothewoods...

The October holidays are already on the horizon; how do you keep the entire family entertained without taking out a second mortgage?

Grab a waterproof jacket, this is the North-east after all and head to the woods for your very own bear hunt. Woodland walks are just the ticket at this time of year, both city and shire offer some gorgeous routes to suit the whole family.

We can’t promise to banish the classic “how much further” remarks, but the promise of finding conkers and beautiful autumn leaves might just sweeten the deal. Grab a thermos flask with hot chocolate for a midway pitstop, and of course plenty of snacks. We’ve got a great selection complete with some handy tips so you can make the most of woodlands on your doorstep.

Pitmedden Woods

Not such a well-kept secret amongst locals perhaps, but this is a lovely and relatively short walk. Park at Pitmedden Gardens which is of course run by National Trust for Scotland, then follow the clearly marked route. You’ll cross a picture-perfect bridge over the stream and then amble round in a circular route.

This is a brilliant spot for conkers thanks to an abundance of horse chestnut trees throughout the woods. There’s also a lovely and rather large pond to admire, and if you’re lucky you might spot some grazing Shire horses. It’s easy to find your way around and there’s no steep hills, although bumpy terrain means you’ll be best off with a carrier rather than a buggy.

Plan ahead if you’re visiting the onsite garden, museum and tea room – which closes for the season at the end of September.

Foggieton

Although not quite as popular as the trail found at nearby Countesswells, this wee walk offers a

more peaceful alternative. You can take either the Ladyhill or Warblers’ Trail, with the latter better suited to pushchairs. You can pay to park onsite and look out for the beautiful old farm walls which are still standing in parts. Post amble – head into Cults for a well-deserved coffee and cake.

The Den, Auchenblae

You could easily spend at least half a day at this absolute gem, which boasts two playparks on site. From swings to slides and even a rocking boat, head to the woods after the kids have burnt off some energy.

You can thread your way along the side of the Luther Water Burn and keep an eye out for fairy doors that are dotted along the route. There’s also plenty of picnic benches if you need to take a breather, before venturing to Castleton Farm Shop in search of tasty goodies on your way home.

Midmar Forest

There are numerous trails you can take through the beautiful Midmar Forest, it’s difficult to believe that this tranquil escape is only a few miles from Westhill. The routes are well marked and there’s wildlife in abundance, from deer to red squirrels. Stick to the paths and plan your route in advance, the Midmar forest loop from Echt is a suitable starting point for all levels.

And if you’re feeling peckish afterwards, head to the Forest Café which can be found at The Treehouse of Midmar – where you’ll also find a very impressive collection of Jellycat soft toys.

Hazlehead Park Trail

We couldn’t not include the popular Hazlehead. If you head beyond the fabulous park area, Hazlehead is also home to the largest woodlands in Aberdeen. There are four colour coded waymarked routes through the neighbouring countryside and woodlands, including the green one-mile trail which is perfect for little legs.

Guitar classics

Scottish guitarist Ian Watt is heading to Aberdeen Arts Centre, for a performance inspired by much loved classics.

Ian has already performed worldwide and played with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. He’s now all set to take to the stage for an evening of movie music and his set will include 1960s rock classics by Fleetwood Mac.

Mhairi Philip shares the inspiring work of this long-standing local charity

We have a lot to celebrate having supported families for the past 30 years. Thanks to the tireless work of around 85 volunteers, we support families in their own homes across Garioch and Formartine. We provide practical and emotional support, ensuring parents can give their children a happy and secure childhood.

You can’t pour from an empty cup; our trained volunteers help parents to rest and reset, because we understand the many challenges in raising a young family. We tackle everything from mental health to isolation and have also supported families faced with a life limiting diagnosis.

Home-Start Garioch will hold a fundraising anniversary dinner on November 15 at Meldrum House Hotel, to celebrate all it has achieved whilst raising vital funds for the future. The event will include games, raffle and an auction. For more information, email mhairi@homestartgarioch.org.uk

Beauty in ruins

The North-east is famed for many things, not least our stunning collection of castles. From the splendour of Balmoral to the pink hue of Craigievar, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to visiting a tremendous slice of history.

We’re homing in on the lesser-known sites, arguably more special for the fact they tend to shirk the limelight in favour of quiet contemplation within their ancient walls. Escape the crowds and head to beautiful ruins, which will make you view the North-east in a whole new light.

First up we have Ellon Castle Gardens, so aptly named as the grounds are home to what was once the magnificent Ellon Castle. The passing of time

Old Slains Castle

makes the ruins even more romantic and they date back to the 15th century.

The grounds have been lovingly restored by a tireless team of volunteers and are home to a unique collection of ancient English Yew trees thought to be at least 500 years old. A secret passage is said to exist from the castle down to the river Ythan and may have been used for smuggling brandy. The fascinating history of this site holds much of the allure, and tales from hundreds of years ago continue to be uncovered by a dedicated team. To gaze up at the weathered branches of 19 Yew trees, some of which could date back to medieval times is rather remarkable. Wander around the gardens in gentle contemplation and soak up the magic of this place. Do check ahead via the Facebook page for seasonal opening times.

Not too far away you can find Tolquhon Castle, parts of which were commissioned by Sir William Forbes in 1584. The remains of the impressive

residence still stand today, and this unsung gem is well worth a visit. The imposing gatehouse will capture your imagination, as will the winding staircases and quirky hiding place for valuables.

Flit across to Kemnay and explore the beautiful ruins of Fetternear Palace, also known as The Bishop’s Palace. Nature has taken over much of this sprawling medieval ruin, but parts of the original structure still stand. The interwoven stories of Fetternear add to its rustic magic; it has links to the Leslie clan and served as a palace to the medieval bishops of Aberdeen. A fire in 1919 saw the story of Fetternear come to an abrupt close after centuries of remodelling. The dramatic frontage remains proud in the sprawling Aberdeenshire countryside, a determined nod to all that once was.

Whilst your in the area, the gentle ruins of St Ninian’s Chapel are well worth a visit. What remains of the chapel stands on the foundations of previous

buildings, including an ancient church. Many of the gravestones are unfortunately too weathered to be legible, but this quiet spot retains a sense of peaceful solitude. It stands as just one puzzle piece in the story of Fetternear over the passing centuries.

Our final hidden gem requires a tad more imagination, for a dishevelled rocky pile is all that remains of Old Slains Castle. Not to be confused with New Slains Castle, we’re firmly eschewing Dracula for this understated structure on the Collieston coastline.

If only crumbling walls could talk, Old Slains Castle has a tumultuous past to say the least. Originally built in the 13th century, it had a front row seat to feuding earls and religious rebellions before it was largely blown up in 1594. All that remains of the five storey building is two sections of wall, you can still envisage how previous inhabitants would once have watched the elements roll in across the unforgiving sea.

SEEING CLEARLY : WENDY BREMNER ON THE VISION BEHIND BELMONT OPTICAL

II’ve lived in Aberdeen since I was five years old, having originally moved from Glasgow. I returned to the city to study Optometry at Glasgow Caledonian University. At the time it seemed like a good idea, partly because of fellow optometrists in the family. As it turns out, it was a very good idea indeed.

I moved back to The Granite City having completed my pre-registration year and went on to get married and have three children. Of course, we added a dog to the chaos! As my children have grown, so has my career. I got the opportunity to see patients in a hospital setting whilst

studying for Independent Prescribing. This qualification means I can support patients in managing acute eye conditions, and it has brought so much variety to my job over the years.

When the opportunity to buy a business came up, I couldn’t let it pass me by. I swapped hospital life for learning the ropes as the very proud owner of Belmont Optical, formerly Jenson & Ledingham. I feel so lucky to be at the helm of the oldest locally established opticians in Aberdeen. It was founded in 1923, that feels rather special.

The weight of history can never be

forgotten, but it’s also good to move with the times. Having gained the trust of the loyal clientele, rebranding has enabled us to modernise the practice. It feels like who we are and what we do is summed up through Belmont Optical.

Every day is different in community practice; every patient has different needs and wants. Whether that’s treating eye conditions or choosing funky frames, there’s always time to help people. Running a business comes with plenty of challenges, and my day doesn’t always go smoothly. I’m yet to find a work/life balance, but I feel very lucky to love what I do.

I’m so grateful to our many loyal customers, and I love getting to know people. I go out of my way to talk to our customers, it’s always interesting to find out about their lives. It costs nothing to be kind and to help people.

Get regular eye-checks, even if you feel there’s nothing wrong. Alongside an NHS eye test every two years, I’d recommend an OCT scan, which is none invasive and looks deeper into the structure of your eye. We all know the importance of wearing suncream, don’t forget to protect your eyes from harmful UV light. You only get one pair of eyes, look after them.
