A Conversation with David Reid: The Small Paintings Show Returns Q: David, for anyone who hasn’t heard of it before, what is The Small Paintings Show?

A: It’s one of our most anticipated events of the year, a celebration of small-scale works by some of the country’s most collectable contemporary artists. The idea is simple: make it easier for people to own original art. Smaller unframed works mean more accessible prices, and the response from collectors last year was incredible.

A: The atmosphere, both online and in the gallery. We had paintings reserved within minutes of going ‘live’, and the energy around opening night in The Viewing Room was fantastic. It showed us just how many people want to support and connect with Scottish art. Folk were buying online as soon as the website went live and genuinely from throughout the world.

Q: What can you tell us about the artists featured this year?

A: We’ve curated a really diverse line-up and persuaded big names who wouldn’t normally paint small scale. Each artist brings something unique, but all share that ability to capture atmosphere and emotion in a small frame. It’s a beautiful balance of collectability and creativity.

Q: Tell us about this year’s event what can we expect?

A: This year, we’re taking it up a notch. The collection goes live on our website on Wednesday 3rd December at 6pm, followed by our in-person launch at The Viewing Room on Friday 5th December. From Thursday 11th December, the show continues at The Ballater Gallery, where it will run right through February. It’s the perfect opportunity to see the works in person and maybe find a piece that speaks to you.

Q: Finally, how can people get involved?

A: Visit our website on Wednesday 3rd December at 6pm to buy artworks online, or join us at The View Room for the opening night on Friday the 5th.

It’s a wonderful evening to enjoy great art, conversation, and perhaps take home something you’ll treasure for years.

We’ll post paintings to you free of charge allowing buying original art to be a totally relaxed and seamless process.

Q: How did the idea for the show come about?

A: It actually started quite organically.

We’d noticed that visitors often wanted to take something home from the gallery, but weren’t always ready to invest in larger pieces. The Small Paintings Show became a way to offer high-quality, unframed original works at a size and price that felt approachable. It’s grown into something really special, a chance for people to start or expand their collection without compromise.

Q: Why do you think this show resonates so strongly with people?

A: I think it’s because art feels personal again. A small painting can always find a space; it doesn’t need to be grand to be powerful. There’s something intimate about smaller works; they invite you in.

And when you know it’s by a renowned artist, it becomes something truly special to live with. It’s the opportunity to buy an original for often less than the price of a print!

Q: Last year’s show was a huge success. What stood out for you?

Understanding financial support after separation: separation: aliment and periodical allowance Ruth Aberdein, Partner and Head of Family Law at Aberdein Considine

When a couple separates, one of the biggest concerns is money - especially if one person relied financially on the other during the relationship. In Scotland, there are legal provisions to help manage this, both during separation and after divorce.

What is aliment?

Aliment is financial support paid by one spouse or civil partner to the other after separation but before divorce. During a marriage or civil partnership, spouses have an obligation to support each other. When they separate, this duty continues, and aliment helps meet the needs of the person who may not have enough income.

How is aliment decided?

Couples often agree on an amount informally.

This could be a monthly payment or an agreement on who covers specific bills like the mortgage. If they can’t agree, a court can be

asked to decide.

The court looks at: · Both parties’ needs and resources · Both parties’ earning capacities · Generally all the circumstances of the case Both parties must provide evidence of their income and spending. The court should only order payments that are reasonable.

It may consider whether someone could generate more income; for example, if they are choosing not to work or are electing not to declare dividend income, or if someone is spending excessively.

What is interim aliment?

Interim aliment is a temporary payment made while waiting for a final court decision. It’s meant to provide immediate protection and cover basic needs, but account should be taken of the standard of living enjoyed during the relationship.

There are no precise guidelines for the court on the amount to order; the court has discretion to decide what is reasonable.

When does aliment start?

Payments usually begin from the date they’re agreed or ordered by the court. That’s why it’s important to act quickly if you need support as delays can mean missed payments.

Can aliment be changed later?

Yes. If circumstances change significantly, for example losing a job or domestic bills increasing, either person can ask for the amount to be varied. Again, evidence will be needed to support the request.

What is periodical allowance?

Once a divorce is final, the duty to pay aliment ends. If financial support is still needed, periodical allowance can be sought as part of an overall settlement. Scots law encourages a “clean break” after divorce, meaning no ongoing financial ties, so periodical allowance is only considered if other financial arrangements (division of assets) are not sufficient to allow the financially weaker person to adjust or avoid hardship.

Periodical allowance can be varied in certain circumstances if ordered by a court or if a written agreement allows.

Do you have to go to court?

Not necessarily. If parties can agree on financial support, a family law solicitor can help put it in writing. Once signed and registered, the agreement becomes legally binding and enforceable.

What if payments aren’t made?

If there’s a court order or registered agreement and payments stop, you don’t need to go back to court. You can ask Sheriff Officers to take action. This might include arresting income, freezing bank accounts or stopping the sale of property.

What about children?

Child aliment or maintenance is handled separately (but any payment made will be relevant when considering spousal aliment/ periodical allowance). Parents often agree on an amount, but if they can’t, the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) can be involved where it has jurisdiction. It will assess what should be paid and can help collect it if need be. A starting point for a separating couple would be to look at the CMS online calculator for guidance. The court rarely deals with child aliment.

How long does periodical allowance last?

Usually, it’s for no more than three years. A longer period would need to involve hardship,

Future proof your border There’s something truly delightful about meeting friends for a coffee at the local garden centre. It’s not just the chat; it’s the leisurely stroll afterward. Drawn in by an array of stunning flowering plants looking fresh and inviting the temptation to buy is irresistible - until the plant thrives for a month and then fades away. Often, this happens because the plant was placed in the wrong spot in the garden, border, or sometimes even the wrong part of the country!

For Full Sun: Shrub: Ceanothus ‘Italian Skies’ has the most incredible blue flowers and is a great pollinator. Thrives in a sheltered spot away from frost in free-draining soil and blooms from late spring. For a hardier alternative shrub, try Pieris japonica - an evergreen that produces fragrant flowers (smells like ‘Lily-of-the-valley’) for months and attracts bees. Plant in acidic soil or use Ericaceous compost if your soil isn’t naturally acidic.

While the success of any new addition to the garden depends on the care it receives, getting the fundamentals right is a great way to start.

Perennial: Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ With its free-flowering nature from late spring through autumn, this pollinating perennial is drought tolerant.

egardless of your feelings towards the festive season, there’s something magic about a spot of Christmas shopping which simply cannot be found online. We’re thinking fabulous window displays and lunch somewhere that bit special. Grab your carry-on and head to the capital, Trend is off to London for the ultimate shopping trip.

Aberdeen is blessed with good transport links to the big smoke, and it’s but a short flight to London.

If you’re in the mood to make the journey an event, might we suggest the gorgeous nostalgia of the Caledonian Sleeper. Picture dining in the Club Car before turning in for the night in your own snug cabin and waking up to the hum of London Euston. For those opting to fly, prepare yourself for an early morning slot on the runway which at least means you have the whole day ahead of you. Once you’ve landed, you don’t have far to go to Oxford Street.

Even the bahest of bah humbugs will be wooed by Oxford Street’s beautiful Christmas decorations, which normally get switched on during the first week in November. Around 300,000 LED lights have been painstakingly hung to create a sparkly canopy, reminiscent of a starry night. Wear comfortable shoes as you wander in and out of more than 100 shops on the mile and a half stretch, retail heaven at its finest. Popular brands including & Other Stories, Uniqulo and Søstrene Grene are all par for the course. A visit to Oxford Street wouldn’t be complete without exploring the iconic Selfridges, famed for its Christmas window which boasted 36,000 baubles last year. We’re just glad we don’t have to put away the decorations!

For something that bit different, take the Northern Line and get off at Camden Market. With 1,000 quirky shops, cafes, stalls and bars you could easily spend an entire day here and still not have experienced everything.

Expect organic skincare, vintage fashion and mouth-watering foodie offerings, Camden is a glorious melting pot where you’ll find truly unique gifts. For dedicated foodies, plan your visit in advance and tickle your tastebuds with worldwide cuisine. From Greek street food to Bhangra burgers, we’re feeling hungry already.

For those feeling a tad stressed from all the spending, we’d highly recommend visiting the Charlotte Tilbury flagship store which opened at the start of this year. It boasts a skin spa which can be found on the lower ground floor, and prices start at £45 for facials. As Charlotte herself would say, you look fabulous darling! Once you’re feeling refreshed, meander along Covent Garden’s most colourful street known as Neal’s Yard. This not-so-secret gem offers the perfect location to bring a marvellous day to a close. The key to a successful London outing is to plan ahead and if you’re a lover of an itinerary then all the better. Make it an annual tradition with a close friend or loved one, Happy Shopping!

MEET JULIE CLARK-SPENCE OF BALFOUR + MANSON LLP

I

t should come as no surprise that Julie Clark-Spence is an exceptionally busy woman, due to her position as Litigation Partner at Balfour + Manson LLP where she also heads up the Aberdeen office.

Specialising in personal injury and medical negligence, she supports clients through unexpected and traumatic circumstances. Trend found out why Julie is passionate about helping people to recover and what she gets up to in rare moments of downtime.

I was always interested in law from an early age and thought for a while I would join the police. I was born in Aberdeen and studied at Aberdeen University. This

has stood me in good stead to have a real understanding of the industries local to the area such as oil and gas, fishing and agriculture. After graduating, I trained at a firm in Elgin. It was during my time there that I was lucky to work within the personal injury team. I helped with cases where people had suffered catastrophic injuries.

At this early stage in my career, I was able to witness first hand just how much I could help people in those circumstances; and I’ve never looked back. I am very much a people person. I’ve always had an interest in people’s stories. Very often the people we act for have been faced with life changing injuries. You need to find out a lot about what their life looked like prior to

the accident, so you can help them as much as possible afterwards. I really take the time to get to know my clients so I can build up that picture. Our person-centred approach is very much part of the ethos within the team.

Due to the nature of my work, some cases will stay with me forever. It’s particularly hard acting for people who have lost a loved one.

No amount of money will ever replace what they have lost or bring their loved one back.

However, people often find the investigations which we carry out are of immense help and sometimes comfort, because they finally get answers to questions that they otherwise would not necessarily have. It is very rewarding to see those families get some form of justice. Ultimately, we help our clients navigate a path to recovery, whatever that may look like. The hours can be long and sometimes it’s very hard to leave work behind.

Even when I’m not in the office, I find myself thinking about cases and that can be difficult.

However, it’s often then that I have time to step back and think about what would be best for a particular client and their case.

I think there is a misconception about compensation culture. However, we never cold call. People don’t realise what we do until they need us. The purpose of compensation in Scotland is to put people back into the financial position that they would have been in prior to the accident. Accidents can be life changing and catastrophic. We help people secure their future, including any care and help that

they might require as a result of their injuries. I genuinely love what I do and I have a brilliant team working alongside me.

We moved into the countryside last year so my downtime very much involves time with my husband and our rescue dogs! I find the best therapy is walking. We also enjoy finding new places to eat in the Shire.
