"We want to thank those special superheroes who work behind the scenes": Travel Agent Day 2024

TORONTO — No matter how many Travel Agent Day celebrations go by, the need to thank travel advisors for all their hard work and dedication is ever-present.

That’s especially true this year as travel agencies continue to rise to the challenge of still-strong booking levels while dealing with labour shortages.

For some travel agents - and for many, many agency owners and managers - it’s a situation that’s made long days a near-constant.

Meanwhile travel demand continues to keep the phones ringing. That’s a good thing, and though the workload is sizable, Canada’s travel agents are proving again and again that they’re up to the task.

Jamie Milton, co-owner of Uniglobe Carefree Travel, knows all about it. And that’s why she’s letting the travel advisors at her Saskatoon, SK agency know just how important they are, as the industry marks Travel Agent Day 2024.

“On Travel Agent Day, we want to take a moment to thank those special superheroes who work behind the scenes every day, solving problems and ensuring that the wheels of all the trips keep turning, uninterrupted and bump-free!” Milton tells Travelweek.

She adds: “The work that they do often goes unnoticed … and so on Travel Agent Day, more than ever, we want to ensure that our travel advisors are recognized and thanked with an abundance of gratitude for all they

do. We want them to know their hard work is seen, appreciated and recognized and that they are valued.”

It was at Uniglobe Carefree Travel – and thanks to travel advisor Colleen Lorenzen – that Travel Agent Day got its start back in 2011. On the first Wednesday of every May, Travel Agent Day is when travel agencies recognize their hard-working team of agents, and encourage other agency managers and owners, and suppliers, to do the same.

Milton sees first-hand the toll that travel’s labour shortage is taking on retailers. Thankfully there’s good news too, as her agency has recently had success with onboarding new recruits.

“I think what our industry is missing is younger, new agents coming into the industry and I think that’s something we, as a whole, need to continue to promote and work on,” says Milton. “When Uniglobe Carefree

has been able to hire younger recruits who have taken some travel courses, they do very well and are very eager to learn.”

Like other experienced travel sellers, Milton has concerns about what will happen if the labour shortage isn’t rectified. “We continue to see agents age out or retire from the industry and there aren’t enough new people coming up to replace them. We feel the labour shortage now, but I fear that if we don’t invest in attracting new people to the industry, this will continue to get worse.”

Milton’s own experience with the travel boom includes a sense of relief that demand for trips is starting to plateau. “2023 was the year we finally saw travel return to some semblance of normal,” Milton tells Travelweek.

May 1, 2024 | TRAVELWEEK | 3 TOP NEWS

At an agency level, 2023 started off “a bit chaotic” with the full cancellation of Sunwing’s program from Saskatchewan, as well as several significant weather disruptions that underscored the lack of slack in the airline schedules, she says. “This really brought to light that although demand was back to normal levels, the travel ecosystem was not yet ready to handle normal levels. This allowed travel advisors to really showcase their worth to consumers and drive agency bookings over supplier direct bookings and we were well positioned to take advantage of this. In the end, despite the cancellations and disruption at the start, our sales were up almost 50% in 2023 compared to 2022!”

Milton adds that so far in 2024, in the first quarter, her agency’s sales are 50% higher than the first quarter of 2023. “We continue to see a very high volume of leisure bookings and a return of corporate bookings and inquiries to a wide array of destinations.”

Three trends that Milton is watching include once-in-a-lifetime travel experiences, destination weddings and other big group trips, and weekend getaways.

“There is still a big emphasis on getting those ‘bucket list’ trips under your belt,” she says. “Consumers still have that feeling of urgency to get those big trips in while they are able to do so. Many clients are taking 2-3 big bucket list trips per year.”

Like many in the industry, Milton says she’s also seeing a big uptick in longer cruises, luxury cruises and world cruises.

“There has also been a big return to destination weddings and larger groups of friends and families travelling together, as well as corporate conferences and incentive groups,” she notes. “Lastly, we are seeing a lot of growth in the good value weekend getaways. This may be a result of everyone being busier again with work and activities, but may also be a response to some economic constraints. There are lots of clients booking for Nashville, Las Vegas, Niagara Falls, and so on, for 3-5 day getaways.”

Travelweek asked Milton what she wants most for her team of travel advisors this Travel Agent Day, when it comes to recognition from the agency’s supplier partners. “More than anything, recognition and personal words of thanks go a long way. We love having our suppliers and our clients stop by, call, email or leave reviews with messages of appreciation and thanks.”

Brand USA MegaFam is a winner with Canadian agents: “This

is the

best fam I’ve ever been on”

HOUSTON — The very first Brand USA MegaFam from the Canadian market, with six concurrent fam trips covering many of the top destinations in the U.S., wrapped up recently with two nights in Houston – and a lively finale event at the city’s one-of-a-kind Downtown Aquarium.

Six groups of travel advisors, all coming from unique, fast-paced Brand USA fam itineraries, converged in Space City to share tales and highlights of their journeys.

In total, 25 cities in 13 states were covered by groups of agents on the MegaFam. Travelweek was able to join the ‘Sands and Sunsets’ group for the trip, which took participants to Scottsdale and Flagstaff in Arizona before visiting Las Vegas prior to Houston. Everyone on the ‘Sands and Sunsets’ itinerary was visiting Arizona for the first time.

The fam was organized by Brand USA in partnership with Air Canada, in conjunction with Air Canada’s

partnership with United Airlines. The opportunity gave Air Canada the chance to showcase its partnership with United, which enables Canada’s largest airline and flag carrier to deliver travellers to anywhere in the U.S. For participating agents, the Brand USA MegaFam was an opportunity to learn about U.S. destinations and experiences to sell to clients. Agents from the eastern half of Canada went on western U.S. itineraries, while agents from the western half of Canada travelled east. Meeting up in Houston for the final two nights gave agents a chance to come together and “talk shop,” as described by Casey Canevari, Senior Manager, Global Trade Development (Canada) for Brand USA.

“Agents were able to see and explore all these different attractions they may not know to give them those breakthrough moments. Canada is the number one foreign market for the United States, and this fam aimed to demonstrate that there’s more than what they know with many unique experiences,” explained Canevari.

“Experiencing Las Vegas firsthand with all its glitz and glamour is great value to offer clients,” attested Pam Mathers of Merit Travel in Brockville, ON.

“I didn’t realize how great of a destination Arizona truly is for lovers of the outdoors,” she added.

“For Vegas, I have so many clients, but I’ve never been there. Now, I can give them a better idea of the destination and this better understanding helps me sell it in a more professional way,” explained Jay Nanji of Boomer Tours & Travel in Burnaby, B.C.

Jenn Quinlan with Trevello Travel Group in Barrie, ON, on a different MegaFam itinerary that took her to New Orleans, Lake Charles and Galveston, did not hesitate to exclaim that “this was the best fam I have ever been on! It’s completely immersive, everybody was incredibly welcoming and we learned so much

8 | TRAVELWEEK | May 1, 2024 TOP NEWS

about each destination that we visited. I have to recommend Louisiana and Texas, and we’re going to being sending our clients down there all the time. I’ve always sold New Orleans as a Bourbon Street experience, but the city has so much more to offer with tours, gastronomy and hotels in and outside the French Quarter. Galveston, for example, is a trip unto itself, far more than a one-night precruise stop. Southern hospitality is top-notch, and those destinations are more than ready to help all agents, so reach out to the tourism boards to help create itineraries.”

In Las Vegas, there was an excellent dinner event at ARIA Resort & Casino hosted by Lip Smacking Foodie Tours. The guide, Kevin, showed an unbelievable zest and knowledge for the venues. This foodie tour is ideal for couples or groups with money to spend.

As explained by Tim Liu, Managing Director, Sales Planning & Effectiveness for Air Canada, Houston was chosen for the fam’s big finale as “Air Canada has invested heavily in Texas, with Houston and Austin.” The U.S.A.’s fourth largest city did not disappoint, with its unique brand of Texas culture on full display.

An interesting fact about Houston; it’s the most culturally diverse city in the U.S. as 24.1% of Houstonians were born outside the country,

according to 2021 census data.

The highpoint of the time in Space City was the guided tram tour of the NASA Johnson Space Center, with most planning to highly recommend this experience to clients. Great for families, this venue gives visitors a chance to see the historic Saturn V rocket, plus a 747 that can be explored inside (and that’s carrying a space shuttle mounted on top), and an area dubbed “the astronaut’s toy box,” amongst other attractions.

Fam participants were treated to a Major League Baseball game at spectacular Minute Maid Park, where the hometown Astros lost 5-4 to the visiting Braves in 10 innings. The stadium was built from a former rail station and has a functional train the drives horizontally above left field, blowing its whistle to celebrate home runs.

There were also some delectable meals enjoyed in the city with the best of Texas served at Goode Company Armadillo Palace and appetizing Mexican food at the original location of

Ninfa’s, a local icon.

“I think Canadians may be surprised with everything that Houston has to offer as a city,” boasted Jorge Franz, Senior Vice President Tourism & Industry Relations for Visit Houston. “There are options for all budgets with 90,000 hotel rooms in the city,” he added.

In Houston, guests of the inaugural Brand USA MegaFam stayed at Hyatt Regency Houston Galleria. This fourstar property with 325 rooms was clean and well-located within walking distance of many places of interest. The hotel’s best feature? The outdoor pool located on the third floor.

Wardinski founded Playa Hotels & Resorts in 2006, launching a portfolio of all-inclusive resorts in Mexico, Jamaica and the D.R. Under his leadership, Playa secured partnerships with Hyatt, Hilton, Wyndham Hotels & resorts, Marriott International and IHG Hotels & Resorts. Travellers would be able to use facial recognition technology to identify themselves through their smartphones when crossing the border under a planned federal project. The Canada Border Services Agency says the initiative would allow for a faster and more seamless travel experience. A pilot project is still two to four years away, but an Ottawa-based civil liberties coalition is already flagging concerns about privacy and accountability. The border agency says use of the system would be optional, adding the agency ensures the privacy of travellers and their information is protected at all times. The proposed system would match a photo from a traveller’s passport with a selfie taken via a mobile device. Among the facial recognition capabilities to be evaluated are image quality, fraud detection and image matching.

Brightline West has broken ground for a high-speed rail system connecting Las Vegas to Southern California. The 350 kilometre system will be constructed in the middle of the I-15 and is based on Brightline’s vision to connect city pairs that are too short to fly and too far to drive. Brightline West will run zero emission, fully electric trains capable of speeds of 320 km/ per hour. Brightline West will connect Southern California and Las Vegas in two hours - or almost half the time as driving. The Las Vegas Station will be located near the iconic Las Vegas Strip and will provide convenient access to Harry Reid International Airport and the Las Vegas Convention Center.

More flights, more destinations with Air Canada for summer 2024

MONTREAL — Highlights of Air Canada’s summer 2024 schedule include new international services to Singapore, Madrid, Stockholm, Osaka and Seoul, with a 25% increase to key leisure destinations in southern Europe, and more than 30% additional capacity into Asia-Pacific.

Plus Air Canada will offer some 120 destinations across North America, including new services to Charleston, SC and Tulum, Mexico.

“We continue to see strong demand for southern European destinations, and have increased capacity to countries such as Italy, Greece and especially Spain for this summer,” said Mark Galardo, Air Canada’s EVP, Revenue and Network Planning.

He added: “Air Canada is also focused on strategically expanding its Pacific hub in Vancouver and we are thrilled to have launched service to Singapore earlier this month, as well as increasing service to Hong Kong and Japan. With continued high demand for visiting friends, relatives and leisure travel, our increased services to key destinations give customers more options than ever before.”

Air Canada’s Atlantic schedule will provide the most nonstop service between Canada and Europe of any carrier.

From Montreal and Toronto, Air Canada is launching new nonstop routes to Stockholm, and will increase frequencies to Rome and Athens.

From Montreal, the carrier will also launch year-round service to Madrid, increase flights to Paris to up to threetimes daily during the summer peak, and restore service to Lyon.

From Toronto, service will increase to Copenhagen and will commence Edinburgh and Brussels earlier in the season.

Across the Pacific, Air Canada continues to build its Vancouver hub as

the gateway to the Pacific. The carrier recently started year-round service to Singapore from Vancouver, and will increase capacity to Hong Kong, Osaka and Seoul. On the East Coast, Air Canada will begin seasonal service from Toronto to Osaka and increase capacity to Tokyo, while from Montreal, the carrier will begin seasonal service to Seoul, complementing enhanced capacity to Tokyo.

In North America, new routes will be offered from Toronto and Montreal to Tulum, from Toronto to Charleston, and from Montreal to St. Louis, Austin and New Orleans.

Within Canada, Ottawa-Calgary and Halifax-Vancouver flights will resume, and there will be frequency or capacity increases, including between Toronto and Saskatoon, Regina, Victoria, Sydney and Gander, as well as between Montreal and Regina, Saskatoon, Victoria, Edmonton, Moncton, Fredericton and Deer Lake.

WestJet adds six more Asian destinations through enhanced KE codeshare

CALGARY — The expansion of WestJet’s codeshare agreement with Korean Air means plenty of new Asia routes for WestJet passengers.

Starting May 17 WestJet will offer six additional cities across four Asian countries from Incheon (ICN) through an expansion of the carrier’s codeshare agreement with Korean Air.

Benefits include a seamless single connection at ICN, the convenience of booking their entire journey with one

ticket, baggage transfers, and earning WestJet Dollars throughout.

The six new WestJet codeshare destinations are: Bangkok (BKK), Da Nang (DAD), Hanoi (HAN), Ho Chi Minh City (SGN), Hong Kong (HKG) and Singapore (SIN).

“As we prepare for WestJet’s inaugural flights between Calgary and Incheon, the timing of this codeshare expansion is ideal. We are enhancing connectivity to more destinations in Asia for our guests and WestJet Rewards members from one of the world’s busiest cities, and Korean Air’s global hub” said Jeff Hagen, WestJet Vice-President of Commercial Development and Strategic Partnerships. Hagen added: “Our longstanding reciprocal partnership with Korean Air opens up exciting opportunities for leisure and business travellers to more locations in the Asian continent and offers new guests in Asia access to all of Canada through our global hub in Calgary.”

Following the success of WestJet’s entry into Asia, the airline recently added seasonal service between Calgary and Incheon. The new route launches on May 17 and will fly on WestJet’s 787 Dreamliner up to three days per week during peak travel periods.

“We are excited to announce an expanded codeshare with our longstanding partner WestJet, offering our valued customers access to a wide range of transpacific destinations,” said Tae Joon Kim, Korean Air Senior Vice President and Head of International Affairs & Alliance. “The launch of WestJet’s Calgary - Seoul Incheon route will bolster connectivity between Korea and Canada, while our strengthened partnership will seamlessly connect customers to an expanded array of Asian and Canadian cities through our hubs in Incheon and Calgary, respectively.”

Intrepid Travel co-founder Darrell Wade talks strategy and more

TORONTO — The guest of honour at Intrepid Travel’s recent meet & greet event was none other than company co-founder Darrell Wade.

Normally based in Australia, Wade was in town and took part in the fun industry gathering at Intrepid’s offices on Spadina Avenue in Toronto.

It’s part of a ‘world tour’ for Wade, one that has him visiting each of Intrepid’s 27 offices this year to mark the company’s 35th anniversary. Intrepid was founded in 1989 and is now the world’s largest adventure travel company.

Wade talked strategy as the company looks ahead to 2030.

“This strategy has me excited,” said Wade. “There are plenty of great, new things on our table at the moment like new DMCs, new product ranges

and new acquisitions.”

Intrepid aims to double its customers to 600,000 globally and achieve revenues of $1.1 billion by 2030, with North America set to play a pivotal role in this growth as the company plans to open a new office base on the West Coast.

Matt Berna, President of the Americas at Intrepid Travel, noted that 2023 saw a record number of Canadians going on adventures with Intrepid, “and we expect this momentum to continue through to 2030, as we enter this new era for the brand. Coming out of the pandemic, we weren’t satisfied with having a short-term view,

Davey joins TravelBrands as BDM for B.C.

From those positions she brings travel agent training and coaching abilities, as well as strong partnerships within the industry, experience with marketing initiatives, impactful sales events, and training programs.

“We are thrilled to have Nicole join our growing TravelBrands Sales team. Her background and talent, along with her great enthusiasm, will undoubtedly strengthen our team and enhance our ability to deliver exceptional results to our retail partners and their clients in British Columbia,” said Bruce Lidberg, Director of Sales for Western Canada.

so we’re looking at taking the momentum from our most successful year and taking it to the next level looking into 2030.”

Bookings from the Canadian market grew by 36% year-over-year in 2023, with some of the more popular destinations including Morocco, Vietnam, Egypt, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Italy and Japan. In the first quarter of 2024, North American revenue has grown by 9% year-over-year.

Intrepid’s six-year strategy will focus on connecting more people with the company more often by expanding into new verticals, including via accommodation, publishing and more. It will leverage its existing global operational network and ensure more local communities can gain more benefit from tourism. Intrepid’s four new values are: Ambitious, Impactful, Real and Together.

“If we are successful in our 2030 Strategy, Intrepid will give back a record amount to environmental and social causes that we believe in as a business,” said Intrepid Travel CEO, James Thornton. “We will provide more travellers with more incredible experiences, more inspiration, more joy and more new ideas than ever before.”

Also of note, Intrepid has launched a new deal with book publisher Hardie Grant’s travel division, Hardie Grant Explore, to publish a series of travel books over the next three years. The Intrepid List will be the first to be published in October, available in shops and online starting November.

Celebrity Cruises tells travellers ‘Nothing Comes Close’ with new campaign

Celebrity Cruises has unveiled its new brand positioning and identity.

The cruise line’s new tagline, ‘Nothing Comes Close,’ is the centrepiece of the new campaign.

The new brand positioning and brand identity is premiering globally starting this week. The launch builds on the arrival of Celebrity Ascent in late 2023 and the highly anticipated debut of Celebrity Xcel in 2025.

‘Nothing Comes Close’ will be the core of the cruise line’s brand positioning from media and advertising, to travel advisors and onboard, according to the cruise line. It’s designed to capture Celebrity’s unique offering combining the intimate and thoughtful service of a small ship, with

the variety and excitement of bigger ones.

“Our guests tell us that Celebrity vacations are unparalleled. From the thoughtfulness of our crew, to the excitement of entertainment and activities, guests tell us that ‘Nothing Comes Close’ to the way we make them feel,” said Celebrity Cruises President, Laura Hodges Bethge. “Our new brand position packages this feeling in a memorable and compelling way.”

She adds that the witty messaging and authentic imagery of the ‘Nothing Comes Close’ campaign cements Celebrity’s reputation among guests as a brand with an emotional connection that sets it apart from the rest. The brand positioning is brought to life in a way that captures the essence of a Celebrity vacation from the perspective of guests employing a technique coined ‘True Eye View’.

“This isn’t just a brand campaign. This is who we are. It embodies the spirit of what sets a Celebrity Cruises vacation apart,” said Michael Scheiner, Celebrity’s Senior VP and Chief Marketing Officer. “The creative direction captures and conveys the elevated emotions and transformative experiences that guests enjoy from the moment they step onboard Celebrity Cruises, where every detail is elevated beyond their expectations.”

Ensemble reports record-breaking profit sharing for 2023

TORONTO — It’s a good time to be an Ensemble member, with the consortium reporting its second consecutive year of profit sharing.

A remarkable 90% of its members have increased their payouts from the previous year as a result. Last year, 73% of the company’s top performing members earned a higher percentage than they did pre-pandemic in 2019.

According to Ensemble, the notable increase in payouts can be attributed to Ensemble’s strategic focus on bolstering profitability. Central to this success is the utilization of Ensemble’s proprietary booking platform, ADX, which continues to surpass industry standards by delivering above-average margins. By leveraging ADX, Ensemble members have seen higher margins and increased revenue streams, further solidifying Ensemble’s status in the travel agency consortia space.

“Ensemble is thrilled to announce another year of profit sharing, smashing expectations and reaffirming our unwavering commitment to member prosperity,” said Michael Johnson, President of Ensemble. “Innovation and profitability are in our DN, and this stellar outcome is proof of our relentless dedication to delivering on and exceeding the promises we’ve made to our members.”

Feedback from Ensemble members has been overwhelmingly positive. Ross Spalding, President of Crown Cruise Vacations, said: “Ensemble has committed itself to helping travel agencies become more profitable. Not only are they achieving this through profit sharing, but also through marketing, technology and consumer-facing programs that agencies are able to participate in. The combination of all of these is creating a significant value proposition

Germany Travel Mart 2024: 50 years of GTM celebrated in Saxony

CHEMNITZ, Germany The city formerly known as Karl Marx Stadt was basking in the spotlight for the recent 50th edition of Germany Travel Mart, and also as it looks ahead to 2025 as one of the three European Capitals of Culture.

Chemnitz hosted an unforgettable party as the official kick-off for Germany Travel Mart 2024.

The evening included exuberant modern dance from the Ballet Company of Theatre Chemnitz and symphonic music provided by the Young Philharmonic Orchestra Augustburg - along with cycling-powered film and a boisterous brass band.

“Germany remains competitive and is playing in the Championship League of Tourism,” proudly stated Petra Hedorfer, CEO of the German National Tourist Board.

With a strong showing in the European market and with international travellers, Germany is claiming its spot as a top tier destination. According to the Nations Brand Index, Germany is ranked first among all 27

24 | TRAVELWEEK | May 1, 2024

European nations, and third worldwide because of a favourable global perception as being educational, fascinating and exciting.

Federal Government Coordinator for Culture and Tourism, Barbara Klepsch, was another proud booster at the festivities, excited for Chemnitz’s honour as the fourth German city to be European Capital of Culture.

“The flagship project ‘Purple Path’ directly relates to the local saying ‘everything goes back to the mines’; building a bridge between the roots of the local people with their centuries-old heritage of mining and modern art,” said Klepsch.

As 400 international guests from 38 countries revelled in the celebrations, German tourism partners were excited to share 2023 stats, with 81 million overnight visitors, a 20% increase from the previous year, and a recovery rate of 88% from Canadian travellers compared to 2019.

With the motto, ‘C the Unseen’, Chemnitz is poised to welcome visitors with 100 projects and more than 1000 exhibits in 2025, including

#3000Garages, a year-long commitment to transform small public spaces into community hubs for creativity and urban development. Another project is Generous Neighbours, bringing together individuals, corporations, educational institutions and other stakeholders to green their city with plantings of gardens and allotments.

The Purple Path is an art and sculpture trail connecting Chemnitz with the 38 cities of Saxony through 70 contemporary installations by international and Saxon artists.

Additional lures for clients to consider Germany this year include UEFA European Football Championship in June and July, exhibitions celebrating 250 years since the birth of artist Caspar David Friedrich and the commemoration of the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Dear Travel Professionals,

Welcome to this year's edition of Switzerland Tourism's Yodel magazine, designed to be your trusted companion when organizing trips for your valued clients.

The excited sound of yodeling could be heard in our office throughout the year. For example, when we learned that Swiss International Airlines is adding Washington DC and Toronto to its network, or when our team won the prestigious Tourism Board of the Year – Award at the Virtuoso Travel Week, or when we looked at the figures generated by visitors from the US and Canada – we yodeled.

In 2023, we achieved a staggering new record with an increase of 23.7% in overnights generated from the US and 13.1% from Canada (compared to the previous record year, 2019). This has resulted in 3,371,448 overnights and many happy customers. We want to thank you for your fantastic support over the years. Without you, this would not have been possible.

As we look ahead to 2024, we recommend proposing the fall months in Switzerland to your clients. Not only will you find better availability, but Switzerland also shows itself from its most charming and multicolored side. Experiencing this season is a true feast for all senses. (See page 9.)

We all aim to learn more about how to make our industry more sustainable and want to make sure that future generations can enjoy traveling the world as much as we do. With this in mind, we invite you to become a Swisstainable Travel Expert. Join us in our endeavor to create Switzerland's most sustainable travel experiences, every little bit counts. (See page 12.)

We want to take the opportunity to welcome our new colleagues Stefanie Dosch and Christelle Deillon, who joined us from Switzerland at the beginning of the year. You can reach our trade relations team at

Swisstainable, the Swiss way to travel consciously

Imagine a destination where visitors can experience protected landscapes along seemingly endless trails, where local produce is valued so much that it has its own festivals, and where hosts manage to achieve the balance of minimal intervention and maximum enjoyment for their guests. In Switzerland, these efforts are not a struggle, but a matter of course. Traveling in Switzerland means being inspired by the beauty of nature and giving responsible, conscious travel the place it deserves. Traveling in a Swisstainable way gives true meaning to travel and creates lasting memories.

■ Discover Switzerland by public transport: Did you know that 95% of Swiss households are within a 5-minute walk of a public transport stop? Hardly anywhere else can you get to a destination more easily and comfortably than in Switzerland. Stops even in remote places, perfectly coordinated connections and unbeatable panoramas make public transport an experience in itself. The "Grand Train Tour" comprises the most beautiful panoramic journeys by public transport.

■ Feel the golden autumn season with all senses: When the larch trees along the rugged Alpine valleys gradually turn golden and the Alpine chamois wrap themselves in their winter clothes, the season of the senses is in full swing. Colorful autumn hikes are a feast for the eyes and harvest-ripe chestnuts and fragrant mushroom dishes a treat for the palate.

■ Immerse yourself in undiscovered regions: Authentic places like Appenzell, remote landscapes like the Onsernone Valley, and lively customs like the wine festival in the Neuchâtel region are nurtured and cherished for good reason. Experiencing lesser-known places provides guests with more authenticity and more serenity.

Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes

The 122 km/76 mile-long route from Thusis to Tirano is a masterstroke from the pioneering age of the railway. It demonstrates how technology and nature can be merged in harmony with one another.

Our recommendation: The Albula Railway Museum in Bergün guides railway enthusiasts and families through the history of the railway in Graubünden and World Heritage Site. Old railway equipment, films and models enthrall visitors. A simulator lets you drive the legendary Crocodile locomotive along the Albula Line yourself.

Monte San Giorgio

La Chaux-de-Fonds / Le Locle, Watchmaking Town Planning

Both towns demonstrate the successful symbiosis between urban planning and the watchmaking industry. Their buildings are a testimony to the history of local craftsmanship and industrialization. Our recommendation: The "Espace de l'urbanisme horloger" visitor center is the perfect starting point for exploring the city's impressive industrial heritage and unique urban design. A guided walk or a tourist train ride in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle will complete your visit in a city that was built by and for the watchmaking industry.

Monte San Giorgio rises up between the southern arms of Lake Lugano. Besides the magnificent view of the lake landscape, the 1,097-meter/4,500 feet high mountain provides a window to prehistoric times. 240-million-year-old fossils can be found within it. Where there was once a sea basin with different reptiles, fish and plants, Monte San Giorgio formed along with the development of the Alps. Our recommendation: The Fossil Museum in Meride, renovated by the star architect Mario Botta, holds the 240-million-year-old treasures found under the layers of Monte San Giorgio. Thanks to virtual reality, animals and plants of the Triassic Era come to life. More information at

St.Gallen – Lake Constance Region.

UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site between lake and mountain

St.Gallen is situated in an Alpine valley, nestled between Lake Constance and Mount Säntis. But it has all the panache of a cosmopolitan city. Designers watch trolley buses trundle by as they discuss the latest fashion presented on runways in Paris, Milan and New York. Business people in suits eat the world-famous St.Gallen bratwurst while casually standing on a street corner in front of a butcher's shop. At Abbey Square, international students sip coffee and debate solutions to global issues. And looming above all of them is the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

■ Old town walking tour with Abbey Library and Cathedral.

■ Discover the Textile Trail, visit the Textile Museum or stay in a Textilland Hotel.

■ The St.Gallen Museum Card opens the doors to 11 renowned museums in St.Gallen.

■ Mount Säntis with its breathtaking views.

■ Chocolate makes you happy, cheese does, too: Discover the culinary delights of the Appenzeller Show Dairy and the Chocolarium.

■ Idyllic boat trip from the harbor town of Rorschach.

■ Try your luck at the Casino St.Gallen.

In July and August, the daytime temperature range is 65° to 82°F (18° to 28°C); in spring and fall 46° to 59°F (8° to 15°C). In January and February, the range is 28° to 45°F (-2° to 7°C). Summer is the main travel season with a share of 66%, but data over the last five years show that Switzerland is becoming increasingly important as a winter destination. Peak ski season is December to March.

Switzerland’s unit of currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). Merchants may accept Euros (EUR), but change most likely will be given back in Swiss francs. ATMs are commonly found, and credit cards are widely accepted. Banks are open Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Tips for restaurant wait staff are included in the price of the meal, but it’s common to round up to the nearest franc or round figure.
