SANDALS 2.0 & BEYOND

“Just like we’ve done since day one”

We’ve heard a lot about ‘Sandals 2.0’? What does it entail?

“It is a commitment from our Executive Chairman, Adam Stewart, to the continuation of his father’s legacy of innovation. If I were to simply describe it, it would be Sandals on steroids. It means product more in tune with clients’ needs, more options for dining with new concepts and local choices, and cutting-edge rooms and suites like our SkyPool Suites and Rondoval Suites with Rooftop Terraces. It’s a promise to do things that have never been done before in hospitality, just like we’ve done since day one in 1981.”

What new offerings are you most excited about?

“I’m really excited for more Canadians to discover Saint Vincent and the Grenadines this winter, especially with two direct flights per week from

Toronto and convenient connectors with Air Canada Vacations. Sandals Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is the first all-inclusive on the main island and boasts more ‘Sandals Firsts’ than any other resort we’ve opened, including two-storey overwater villas.”

How have Canadian travel agents made a difference in 2024?

“Canadian travel advisors continue to be the wind beneath our wings. I’m especially proud this year that we have six Canadian members of the ‘Chairman’s Royal Club’ for top producing global travel advisors. It’s the most we’ve ever had, and hopefully we’ll have even more in 2025.”

What’s most in demand right now among Canadians?

“Jamaica, the birthplace of Sandals Resorts, is hot, hot, hot! The island is

having a moment right now, with its own energy that can’t be duplicated anywhere else. The warm hospitality, the culture, cuisine and music – it all adds up to a vacation experience that Canadians are craving. Plus, we have excellent airlift during the winter season with direct flights from Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary.”

What’s

one thing that all travel agents need to know for 2025?

“Refurbishments and enhancements continue across Sandals Resorts in Jamaica. Many resorts, including Sandals South Coast and Sandals Ochi Beach Resort, have recently introduced brand new room categories. Beaches Negril now features 3- and 4-bedroom villas. Sandals Royal Caribbean is up next with innovative suites in 2025. There are also developments on tap from our corporate Food & Beverage team so stay tuned!

Island

of plenty

There’s no better time to book a trip to Jamaica, home to an array of fun activities, awe-inspiring landscapes and a fresh crop of accommodations that truly impresses

hen it comes to swagger, Jamaica’s got lots of it –and for good reason.

With lush landscapes, vibrant culture and consummate hospitality, not to mention a record-breaking number of visitors this year at nearly three million, it’s no wonder that Jamaica has become the envy of the Caribbean. Its attractions are vast and varied, as are its world-class accommodations, which means there’s always something new and memorable to discover, no matter how many times one visits. Whether it’s visiting Nine Mile Village, the birthplace of Jamaican music icon Bob Marley, to learn about the king of reggae, or touring the famed Appleton Estate to taste the region’s most popular rum, or following the Jamaica Blue Mountain Culinary Trail to discover the distinctive flavours of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jamaica offers endless reasons to book an unforgettable tropical vacation in 2025.

The Landscapes

The growth of community tourism in Jamaica has led to the development of off-the-beaten-track tours, revealing another way to discover this diverse island. Visitors can delve into the history of the Maroons and their survival techniques while heading into the caves of Trelawney’s Cockpit Country, located between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Stalagmites, stalactites, underground freshwater pools (and an occasional nocturnal animal) provide a stunning backdrop and adrenaline rush, while historical stories reveal unmatched insight into the resiliency of Jamaicans.

With so many varied landscapes across the 11,000 square kilometres of this island, hiking is an everlasting way to appreciate its rich diversity with a local guide. Consider a short jaunt along the Shelter Trail in Portland to immerse in rainforest vines and bromeliads. The Oatley Mountain Trail, overlooking St. Andrew, is a more challenging workout and offers 50 different varieties of trees and shrubs lining the route. Alternatively, the easily accessible Blue Mahoe Trail welcomes kids and seniors, ending in a sweeping lookout over the capital city of Kingston and the coastline.

The Activities

No visit to Jamaica would be complete without a stop at the famed Rick’s Café in Negril, where people from around the world watch brave cliff divers show off their skills against the sunset. Also not to be missed is the Luminous Lagoon, home to millions of dinoflagellates that glisten at night, producing an eerie glow in the water. Jamaican tour company Island Routes has the tools to combine these options and more into an unforgettable vacation.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, Island Routes provides tours in Montego Bay, Negril, Ocho Rios, Kingston and the South Coast. It recently launched the Private Collection, private and bespoke tours that offer curated access to Jamaica’s best-known attractions and hidden gems. Travellers collaborate with a bespoke concierge to design their own

single or multi-day excursion, or can choose from 11 handpicked options that include VIP access to extraordinary selections such as a Blue Mountain farm-to-table dining experience, an open-fire dinner in Ocho Rios or an artisanal chocolate tasting. For those seeking adventure, a powerboat trip with access to a waterfall and secluded cove in Ocho Rios or a bamboo river rafting journey with riverside lunch may be just the ticket.

The Accommodations

Jamaica is betting on a bright future with plans to add 20,000 rooms in the next 10 to 15 years. This year, several brands made their debuts on the island with new accommodation options, providing travel advisors even more temptations for clients, from honeymooners to multi-gen family reunions.

Exclusive to Sunwing guests, RIU Hotels & Resorts welcomed the all-inclusive Hotel RIU Palace Aquarelle this past May in Falmouth, featuring 753 rooms including swim-up suites, two-bedroom family rooms and connecting suites. It also boasts four swimming pools, direct beach access with plenty of sun loungers, the Splash Water World water park and several nonmotorized sports to choose from like stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, catamaran sailing and snorkelling.

For rest and relaxation, this family hotel also offers a Wellness Centre featuring a salon, fitness centre and Renova Spa, as well as a daily schedule of RIU Fit group activities. There are bars scattered throughout the property and when hunger strikes, guests can choose from international cuisines such as Italian and Japanese, live cooking stations at the buffet and traditional local cuisine at the Jerk Station.

Spanish hotel chain Catalonia Hotels & Resorts acquired Holiday Inn Montego Bay earlier this year, renaming it to Catalonia Montego Bay and adding 250 units to its existing 510 rooms. Families will appreciate the kids-only pool and kids club, plus the new kid suite rooms featuring a separate space with bunk beds and a PlayStation. There’s a boardwalk to appreciate the sunset each evening, an adults-only pool with swim-up bar, and six dining options including Jerk Bar, Mamma Mia Pizza and Japanese teppanyaki at Ayami. Catalonia Montego Bay marks the brand’s debut in Jamaica and the first of two projects that will expand its portfolio, which already includes six properties in the Dominican Republic, five in Mexico, one each in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal, and 58 in Spain.

On the northwest corner of the island, north of Negril, Princess Hotels & Resorts debuted two of Jamaica’s largest resorts on Nov. 1, 2024. Family fun flows throughout the all-inclusive Princess Grand Jamaica featuring 590 ocean view suites. Guests can upgrade to Platinum status, which includes private check-in/checkout and exclusive beach and pool access at the private beach. But the fun doesn’t stop there — there’s also a concierge, on-resort transportation, spa discounts and à la carte dinner reservations. Guests are spoiled for choice when it comes to dining, with nine restaurants serving Jamaican, Asian, Mexican and Italian cuisines, plus eight bars. Two swimming pools and an aquatic park make for plenty of water-time, and the Aquatic Activities Center is located on the beach. And when Mum and Dad need some alone time, nanny service is available.

Next door is the all-inclusive and adults-only Princess Senses The Mangrove, a five-star resort for romantic rendezvous-à-deux or a tropi-

cal getaway from it all with friends. There are 401 oceanview suites including 14 over-the-water villas with sunset views, each with an infinity pool, a terrace over the water and one bedroom with a partial glass floor to view marine life below. Suites on offer include those with swim-out access or a hydromassage hot tub, or guests can choose from 54 mirroradorned pleasure suites with round king beds, premium bathrobe and slippers, a double rain shower, soaking tub, hot tub on the terrace, a complimentary intimacy kit and access to the sensual O’Club Experience. They can treat themselves by upgrading to Platinum level for private lounge access, concierge service and other exclusive amenities. For foodies, a myriad of gastronomy options await, including 10 themed restaurants, 14 bars, three international buffets and a food truck zone near the swimming pools serving a variety of freshly made daytime snacks.

It’s no surprise that Sandals Resorts International continues to innovate with alluring accommodation options. Sandals Dunn’s River debuted the Tufa Terrace Skypool Suites in 2023, and in 2024 it introduced another alluring option: Coyaba Sky Villa Swim Up Rondoval Butler Suite with a distinctive circular design and thatched roof. This rooftop hideaway surrounded by lush tropical plants includes a private pool with openair terrace, a bistro dining area, lounge chairs and Tranquility soaking tub for two. The suite interiors feature a king bed, a sitting area with a private bar stocked with premium liquor, and a spacious bathroom with soaking tub, walk-in shower and double-sink vanity.

Meanwhile at the laidback Sandals South Coast with its two miles of white sand beach, three new suite categories tempt with their balcony views of sea, beach or gardens: Longbeach Beachfront one bedroom butler suite with balcony tranquility soaking tub; Longbeach beachfront swim up club level suite with patio tranquility soaking tub; and Longbeach front club level suite with balcony tranquility soaking tub. Also new are the Swim up Rondoval Suite Villas, which lead right into the zero-entry river pool and include a secluded outdoor area to lounge, high conical ceilings, access to a plunge pool, a king

bed and an expansive bathroom with walk-in shower and soaker tub.

Jamaica’s inventory of rooms will see continued growth, with three hotels currently under construction and coming on to the market in 2025 and 2026. These include UNICO 18°77° Hotel Montego Bay with 450 rooms, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in St. Thomas with 1,000 rooms, and Planet Hollywood Royalton in Trelawny, which will add another 650 rooms.

The Access

At Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, a $70 million runway expansion project has been underway since May 2024, adding more equipment to increase flights and turn the airport into a significant flight hub in the Caribbean. Canadian airlines are contributing to Jamaica’s booming tourist numbers. With steady increases from Air Canada and WestJet, there’s also been impressive growth from Sunwing, Flair and Caribbean Airlines, ranging from 62% to 109%. Jamaica has also seen a steady stream of passengers arriving by sea cruise ships, with 2024 projected to welcome 700,000 cruise passengers, a 23% increase from 2023, according to Jamaica’s Ministry of Tourism. Royal Caribbean, MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Line are the three leading cruise companies choosing Jamaica. Go to visitjamaica.com for more information about travel to Jamaica.

A&K recommends southern India & Vietnam for 2025

Abercrombie & Kent is looking ahead to 2025 with recommendations for must-visit destinations and exclusive experiences. These include India, where the company has seen a significant increase in demand over the past two years, particularly in the northern region around Udaipur, Jaipur and the Taj Mahal. But the country’s southern region is just as alluring, says A&K, where travellers will encounter less crowds, ancient temples and natural landscapes, including the Kerala’s serene backwaters. If guests want to “do it the A&K way,’ they can book A&K’s ‘Southern India: Temples & Traditions’ itinerary during which they’ll explore ancient sites, participate in local festivals and enjoy exclusive access to cultural experiences, including a meeting with the Cochin Royal Family.

Also high on the list for 2025 is Vietnam, a major draw for foodies with seven Michelin-starred restaurants. In addition to a dynamic culinary scene and rich cultural heritage, Vietnam will be celebrating the Golden Jubilee of

Reunification Day on April 30, 2025, marking a historic milestone in its unification and making it an especially meaningful time to visit. A&K’s ‘Flavors of Vietnam’ includes such highlights as Hanoi’s street food stalls, plus visits to two Michelin-starred restaurants in Ho Chi Minh City: Gia, which serves traditional Vietnamese cuisine with a modern twist, and Anan, known for its elevated street food. abercrombiekent.com
