INTRODUCCIÓN Tienes entre tus manos una nueva edición de la guía turísticogastronómica …E para comer, Lugo. Ya la número trece de una colección que nació con el objetivo de mostrar al mundo los lugares con más encanto de la provincia y la gastronomía típica de los 67 ayuntamientos que la conforman. En esta ocasión hemos sido nosotros los que hemos estado en cada uno de estos puntos y ahora queremos compartir contigo nuestro álbum de recuerdos, sensaciones e imágenes. Podrás disfrutar del mar, de la montaña, de sus ríos, de sus playas… y también de su historia, de su patrimonio monumental y cultural y conocer mucho más sobre su gastronomía. Un conjunto de experiencias que no te dejarán de sorprender. Viajamos desde el mar Cantábrico hasta la Ribeira Sacra. Pisamos la arena blanca y fina de playas espectaculares como la famosa de As Catedrais, Lóngara, Llas, Xilloi o Covas. Un paraíso natural salpicado de multitud de muestras de patrimonio histórico y cultural en el que se refleja todo el pasado lucense. El gran emblema de esta tierra es la Muralla de Lugo, bimilenaria y declarada por la Unesco Patrimonio de la Humanidad en el año 2000, pero también nos encontramos con castros y petroglifos de la prehistoria, castillos y fortalezas medievales y variedad de edificios religiosos de diferentes estilos, como la Real Abadía de Samos o las catedrales de Lugo y de Mondoñedo, ambas Patrimonio de la Humanidad. De su historia religiosa también proviene la unión de esta provincia con la peregrinación a Santiago de Compostela. Está atravesada por seis rutas jacobeas y, en esta ocasión, nos hemos decantado por recorrer la más concurrida: el Camino Francés.

It is already the 13th guide of a collection that was born with the aim of showing the world the most beautiful places of the province and the typical gastronomy of the 67 councils that Lugo is composed of.

We also knew the beautiful Ribeira Sacra, the Sil Canyons and the awesome terraces where the wine with certificate of origin is grown.

You will be able to enjoy the sea, the mountains, the rivers, the beaches and also its history, its monumental and cultural heritage and know its gastronomy more deeply. In short, a combination of experiences that will leave you open-mouthed.

A great natural paradise with numerous samples of historic and cultural heritage where all the past of Lugo is revealed. The great symbol of this place is the Wall of Lugo, bi-millenary and declared as World Heritage Site by the Unesco in 2000. But we also found forts, and petro glyphs from prehistory times, castles and medieval fortresses and a variety of religious buildings of different styles, as for example, the Royal Abbey of Samos or the Cathedrals of Lugo and Mondoñedo. From its religious history, the link of this province with the pilgrimage to Saint James’ Way comes too. Lugo is crossed by six Jacobean routes and, on this occasion, we have decided to go across the most crowded one: the French Way.

Al norte, A Mariña: costa e interior Delimitada por los ríos Sor y Eo, que separan la comarca de las tierras de A Coruña y Asturias, y por la sierra de O Xistral al sur, A Mariña cuenta con más de 100 km de costa en los que el mar esculpe espacios naturales que nos han encantado. Tiene más de 80 playas, acantilados impresionantes y lugares recónditos en los que evadirse del mundo por un instante. Hacia el interior, sus montañas y valles permiten disfrutar del mar y de la montaña en muy poco tiempo.

Fuciño do Porco

El paseo hasta Fuciño do Porco está de moda y, tras escuchar maravillas de él, le dedicamos una mañana. ¡No nos defraudó! Antes de llegar a su entrada, le sacamos una foto desde lejos, luego en el paseo nos lo pasamos genial. En O Vicedo también visitamos varias playas que nos encantaron, como la de San Román, Abrela o Xilloi, y luego nos fuimos a comer a Ourol, localidad en la que nos llamaron la atención sus casas indianas. 16

De Lourenzá nos quedamos con el monasterio benedictino de San Salvador, la iglesia de Santa María y con su producto típico: la faba. Otra comida que nos encantó fue la enfariñada de Trabada. En esta localidad, también nos acercamos al área recreativa de A Choza, en A Ría de Abres, con un observatorio de aves y un embarcadero.

TO THE NORTH, A MARIÑA: COAST AND INTERIOR Delimited by the Sor and Eo rivers, which separate Coruña and Asturias, and to the mountains of O Xistral at the south, A Mariña has more than 100 km of coastline where the sea sculpts natural spaces that are amazing. It has more than 80 beaches, awesome hills and remote places to be lost from the world just for a moment. Towards the interior, its mountains and valleys allow us to enjoy the sea and the mountains in a short period of time. The walk to Fuciño de Porco is in fashion, and after hearing wonders about it, we spent the whole morning there. It did not disappoint us! Before arriving to the entrance, we took a photo from far away; then in the

walk, we really had fun. In O Vicedo, we also visited several beaches that were extremely beautiful, such as, San Román, Abrela o Xilloi beaches and after that, we went to have lunch to Ourol, a place where the Indian houses caught our attention. We slept several nights in Viveiro, a city that we really loved for its views, its atmosphere and its old area. It has three different settled areas that are: Celeiro, Viveiro and Covas. The two last ones are linked by the A Misericordia Bridge. The Covas beach is also amazing. We were told that there are two dates to be back there: at Easter holidays and at the beginning of the month of July, when the “Resurrection Fest” is celebrated, one of

the most important festivals of hardcore, metal and punk music at an international level. In Xove, we should highlight its beaches and the Pozo Da Ferida waterfall, where we find a hiking mini-route. Another waterfall that really attracted us too much was the so-called Pozo da Onza’s in O Valadouro. In Cervo, we visited the Provincial Museum of the Sea, located in San Ciprián, and the Historic-Artistic site of Sargadelos. Then, we arrived in the factory of Sargadelos throughout the Paseo dos Namorados and we bought ceramic as a souvenir. We finished the evening in Burela: we walked around O Cantiño, A Marosa and O Portelo beaches; we saw its

fishing port and finally we had dinner Burela Tuna. So delicious! Regarding its historic heritage, we must mention: - Castro do Ouro Castle, of Pedro de Cela O Mariscal, in Alfoz. - The Mondoñedo Cathedral, of the XIII century, which is majestic. - San Martiño Basilica, of the VI century and it is considered the most antique of Spain, in Foz. To recharge batteries, we had an ice-cream in A Rapadoira beach, which was really crowdy. As regards Lourenzá, we should highlight the San Salvador Benidictine monastery, the Santa María church and its typical product: the “faba” (beans). Another food that

we really loved was the “enfariñada” of Trabada. In this region, we also approached to A Choza recreational area, in Abres estuary, with a bird observatory and a quay. The coast along Barreiros is astonishing; we went across all its beaches from Anguieira’s to Arealonga’s. We stopped several times along its eight km and we had really fun. Close to Barreiros one can find Ribadeo and its famous beach known as As Catedrais. It was really breathtaking! We spent a whole day going through the streets of Ribadeo, visiting places like Rinlo, Pancha Island or its marina. We will return, for sure!

Terra Chá, la llanura verde de la provincia Entre la franja norte de la provincia y el corazón de Lugo, se enmarca una extensa planicie conocida como Terra Chá, que está rodeada por los relieves montañosos de A Cova da Serpe, A Loba, A Carpa, O Xistral, el cordal de Neda y la sierra de Meira. En su interior se mezclan ríos, humedales, lagunas y diversidad de espacios naturales con reliquias de su patrimonio histórico y cultural.

Dos joyas gastronómicas están ligadas a Vilalba, el queso con denominación de origen protegida San Simón da Costa, hecho con leche de vaca y ahumado con madera de abedul, y el capón, muy típico en las comidas navideñas.

Terra Chá, la llanura verde de la provincia

De Cospeito nos quedamos con su laguna, muy cerca de su capital, A Feira do Monte. Cuenta con varios observatorios de aves y un centro de interpretación de su flora y fauna.

En la hora de la comida degustamos pollo asado y unos huevos con patatas, que estaban de vicio. ¡Qué sabor y qué yema! Eran productos de la raza Galiña de Mos, una raza autóctona con origen en la parroquia de San Xiao de Mos y que cuentan con cada vez más fama en la comunidad gallega y fuera de ella.

El mismo día que visitamos esta laguna, nos fuimos hasta el castro de Viladonga, en Castro de Rei, una de las reliquias arqueológicas más importantes de toda Galicia. En su centro de interpretación pudimos saber que data de los siglos III y IV.

Terra Chá, la llanura verde de la provincia

Muy cerca de Vilalba, hacia el nordeste, está Abadín, conocido como la puerta de la Terra Chá. Es interesante su iglesia de Santa María y su producto estrella son los grelos. Hacia el noroeste en el mapa se ubica Muras, un pueblo pequeñito inmerso en plena sierra de O Xistral. En esta misma zona está Xermade, donde conocimos el funcionamiento de un parque eólico, el de Sotavento. ¡Visita recomendada y diferente!

TERRA CHÁ, THE GREEN PLAIN OF THE PROVINCE Between the north part of the province and the heart of Lugo, a large flatland known as Terra Chá is framed. It is surrounded by the mountainous relief of A Cova da Serpe, A Loba, A Carpa, O Xistral, the range of Neda and the mountains of Meira. Fort, in Castro de Rei, one of the most important archaeological relics of all Galicia. In its interpretation centre, we could learn that they date from the III and IV centuries. At lunch time, we tasted roasted chicken and some eggs with chips. They were delicious! What a taste and what a yolk! They were products of a breed of hens of Mos, an autochthonous breed originated in the parish of San Xiao de Mos and little by little they are becoming more famous in Galicia and outside it. All this area is very rural and one of the most important sectors here is the livestock.

Along our trip, we saw dairy cows of a breed called “frisona”, huge plantations of corn for the feeding of the cows and also for the sheep and lambs of another autochthonous Galician breed: the Galician sheep. Everything between A Pastoriza and Riotorto. This last one has a great smith tradition. There are still samples of this traditional trade such as the “mazo de Ferreiravella”. Near Villalba, towards the north-east, we find Abadín, which is known as the door of the Terra Chá. It is interesting to see the Santa María church and its main product is the green turnip.

To the north-west Muras is found, a small village framed in the middle of the O Xistral mountains. In this same area we also found Xermade, where we learnt about the working of a wind farm called Sotavento’s. A mustgo visit! Towards the south of Villalba of very close to Lugo, we spent a morning in Guitiriz, which is famous for its healing waters and medicinal springs such as: Valdovín, Santo Domingo or Lagostelle’s. In the centre of the village, we found the beautiful San Xoán de Lagostelle church and we bought a corn bread as a souvenir. It was delicious!

EXPLORING THE MOUNTAIN OF LUGO The mountain landscapes of A Fonsagrada and Os Ancares impress us for its beauty and spectacularity. The peace invaded our visit to this area and we found real surprises like for example its leafy forests, its tops, its valleys and the relics of its ethnographic heritage: raised granaries, bridges, pallozas (it is a traditional dwelling of the Serra dos Ancares of northwest Spain). To travel to the mountains of Lugo means to penetrate into the heart of nature and to discover awesome places. To the way to the famous village of O Piornedo, in Cervantes, we go through Baralla, Becerreá and As Nogais, where we find the Doncos tower and rests of snow from previous days. The region of Os Ancares left us unforgettable moments like the

ones described before. We abandon O Piornedo to arrive to the frontier with the autonomous community of Castilla León and going back to the hotel through Navia de Suarna, a small village of great beauty with a bridge over the Navia River and the castle of the counts of Altamira. We stopped the car in several times to observe and immortalise all the mountain landscapes we were enjoying during the way. The whole area of Os Ancares was amazing, but A Fonsagrada was algo good; with a natural, ethnographic heritage and a delicious gastronomy. In Baleira, we saw the spring of the Eo and Neira Rivers, A Cortevella area and the Pozo da Ferreira waterfall. Then, we arrived in A

Fonsagrada at lunch time and we remained shocked by the stew we ate. We had a walk around the village and in the afternoon we arrived in Negueira de Muñiz, the least populated area of the whole Galicia. Back to the centre of the province, we went through the Eo River in Ribeira de Piquín and we arrived in Meira, a transition place between the mountains of Lugo and Terra Chá. Then, we rested a little in the Porto da Pena recreational area and after that, we went to the centre; we had a walk and knew its main square, of great beauty, where the Santa María de Meira monastery can be found.

Nuestro recorrido por las localidades que bordean el Camino Francés comenzó en O Cebreiro, un pueblo con mucho encanto por el que recorrimos sus calles, conocimos su iglesia románica de Santa María a Real, del siglo IX, y probamos su producto estrella: el queso de O Cebreiro, con denominación de origen. A su lado en el mapa, está Folgoso do Courel. Además de sus paisajes de montaña, nos quedamos con lo exquisitas que estaban las castañas que nos encontramos.

THE FRENCH WAY GOES THROUGH THE PROVINCE It is considered as the main pilgrimage route to Saint James and goes through Lugo from the O Cebreiro village, in Pedrafita do Cebreiro, to the council of Palas de Rei. Apart from this, other five Jacobean routes pass along Lugo: two official ones (the Primitive Way and the North Way); other three alternative routes (The South Way, the Interior North Way and the Sea Way). Our journey, through the localities that border the French Way, started in O Cebreiro, a beautiful village where we went across its streets; we knew its Santa María a Real Romanesque church, from the IX century and we tasted its main

product: O Cebreiro cheese, with a certificate of origin. Next to it in the map, we can find Folgoso do Courel. Apart from its mountain landscape, we still remember the delicious chestnuts we found. On the way to Sarria, we went through Triacastela, Samos and O Incio. Along our route, we found relics linked to the religious history of this area. Therefore, we saw the Santiago church, in Triacastela, or the San Xulián monastery in Samos; both of them are indispensable stops for the great majority of the pilgrims. We also stopped in two different places: Firstly, the Eirós cave, in Triacastela,

with a great archaeological value. There, the first appearances of the Palaeolithic cave paintings of the North-West of Spain were discovered. Secondly, the Vilasouto dam, in O Incio. It was built in 1969 with the aim of solving the water supply in the region of Lemos. The most populated locality of this region is Sarria, where we took the opportunity to eat “Porco Celta” (pork stew), an autochthonous Galician breed that we still remember. The French Way goes through the province

through its streets, arrived to the main square, knew the San Salvador and Santa Marina churches and the Magdalena monastery too. One of the symbols of Sarria is the so-called Batallón Tower, which used to be a fortress of a medieval origin that defended the Saint James’ Way and the whole region. Our next destiny was Portomarín, but before this, we stopped in O Páramo and Paradela, where we saw the Belesar reservoir. Precisely, because of the construction of this dam, in the 50s, the capital of Portomarín was moved to the right border of the Miño River and nowadays we can

still see the remains of the ancient people. We finished this day in Monterroso, where it is advisable to see the Romanesque Novelúa and San Lourenzo de Pedraza churches, just like the Ligonde stone cross. Around the last section of the French Way along the province, we went through Taboada, Antas de Ulla and Palas de Rei. From these three localities, we must highlight Mácara torrents, small waterfalls in the Ulla River that create awesome landscapes, and the Pambre castle, an example of the medieval and military architecture of Galicia.

Hicimos una ruta en catamarán, como el que se ve en la foto, por el río Miño desde el embalse de Os Peares, entre Ourense y Lugo, hasta el de Belesar, en Chantada.

RIBEIRA SACRA, A PLACE OF WINE AND LANDSCAPES The Sil River, frontier with the province of Ourense, and the Miño River, at the south west of the province, forms beautiful terraces where the wine with certificate of origin Ribeira Sacra is cultivated. We made a route in catamaran, as you can see in the photo, throughout the Miño river from the Os Peares reservoir, between Ourense and Lugo, to Belesar’s, in Chantada. We saw the banks of San Fiz and we were recommended to taste the biscuits Marineras de Daveiga to recharge batteries. This is a brand from Chantada that is very famous in the whole province and outside it. They were delicious! Towards Monforte de Lemos, we passed through O Saviñao and we found three amazing places: a meander of the Miño River called Cabo do Mundo;

A Cova beach, where we had lunch, and the San Martiño da Cova beach, in a beautiful village and with magnificent views. Monforte de Lemos is the capital of the Ribeira Sacra and we still have good memories. The Nosa Señora A Antiga School has an amazing square; a building known as “The Escorial” of Galicia. We passed through the walk at the banks of the Cabe river and we climbed to the top of the Lemos Valley, where we visited the architectural ensemble of San Vicente do Pino, formed by the Homage Tower, Condes de Lemos Country House and the monastery, which has turned today into a Parador. Very close to Monforte, we can find the Ecce Homo de San Fiz de Rubián chapel, in Bóveda, and the San Salvador de Ferreira

de Pantón monastery, places of a great patrimonial value. We cannot forget the wine that we drank to accompany one of our diners in a restaurant in Sober. We were told that the cultivated grape was the secret. We made the most of our stay in a Ribeira Sacra by doing the circular route of A Cubela, in Ribas de Sil. We went to see the Montefurado tunnel, excavated by the Romans to alter the course of the Sil River in search of gold. Then, we approached to the most typical stone wine cellars of A Pobra do Brollón. AROUND LUGO To join the rural with the urban has never been an easy task. From the city of Lugo, we move to different places for two days. We saw heritage, nature and ate wonderfully again. The gastronomy in this area leaves no room for doubts or complaints. One of the days, we made a route through the banks of the Miño River, we crossed forests full of autochthonous flora and we arrived to the “insuas” (little islands) of the Miño River, in Outeiro de Rei. What a wonderful place! We ate roasted lamb in Rábade and we went towards Friol, where we could see the Miraz Tower and the San Paio de Narla Fortress, which was turned into an ethnographic museum.

Another day, we moved to Guntín to know the Ferreira de Pallares monastery, from the IX century and we bought its most typical product: Mougan peppers. Then, on the way to Láncara, we found the Adai Country House, in O Corgo, and we got closer to fields full of a typical breed of Galician cows called “Rubia Galega”. We finished the morning in the “Museo Vivo e Integrado del Campo y de la Locomoción Agraria” (Muvicla), opened in 2019, where we could learn a little more about the agrarian and livestock history of the ancestors of this area. LUGO, THE CAPITAL. HISTORY, CULTURE AND GOOD “TAPAS” Its great protagonist is the millenary Wall, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 2000 by the UNESCO. From the moment you go through one of its doors to the centre of the city, the atmosphere of its streets does not leave you indifferent. You come across with samples of its cultural heritage and its restaurants and bars surprise you with its famous “tapas”. Our trip along the province ended in Lugo. We went up to the Roman Wall; we enjoyed a nice walk and saw the city from the top. We found the Santa Maria

Cathedral; then the San Francisco monastery and the Provincial Museum. The truth is that all this part of the city was amazing. We arrived in the main square, dominated by the town hall. We knew Campo Castelo and then we changed direction to O Campo square. The stone streets of this area embellish the experience and we also knew the wine and “tapas” culture by which this area is famous. We must mention the Nova and Da Cruz streets and the neighbourhood of a Tinería. We had some wine with some “tapas” and then we had some portions that delighted our palate.

In the afternoon, we saw all the nature that surrounds the city, mainly, the surroundings of the Miño and Rato Rivers, with really attractive recreational areas. Another day, we knew the Rosalía de Castro Park and the interesting remains of the ancient roman baths too. At the end of the afternoon, we got closer to the roman bridge above the Miño River and took a photo; after a rainy dawn, the river was almost overflown.

… E para comer, Lugo recorrió España con La Vuelta Como ya es tradición, este verano la Apehl dio a conocer algunos de los tesoros más deliciosos de nuestra provincia por todo el país de la mano de La Vuelta Ciclista a España 2019. El puesto propio de …E para comer, Lugo estuvo presente en todas las salidas de etapas este año para que los asistentes pudiesen saborear nuestra gastronomía e informarse sobre nuestras opciones turísticas gracias a la degustación de productos facilitados de manera altruista por los diversos consejos reguladores y asociaciones de productores gallegos y a la distri-

bución gratuita de ejemplares de esta guía turístico-gastronómica. Además, por segundo año consecutivo, la Asociación de Cociñeiros da Mariña participó en varias de las etapas cocinando productos típicos en directo. Con esta iniciativa, por la que la Apehl lleva apostando ocho años, se consiguen presentar ante el mundo algunos de los mayores atractivos de los 67 ayuntamientos lucenses.
