MARCH 2023
Graphic Designer | AR
Marco F. Benedetti
The winter months have gone by very quickly and as I write this letter you will have already received a communication that the dues increase, and other resolutions were approved. The discussions at the Annual Meeting were very important so I am going to spend substantial time in my message on this topic. Much was discussed and I can’t possibly include everything so for the 50 or so members present, please know that this is a very brief summary.
The discussion at the Annual Meeting was very active and lively. I think everyone was a little surprised by the dues increase, but more importantly would have liked more time and detail to understand the increase. Those were valid points, and the past practice of the meeting notice and resolutions will be changed going forward. Maggie Shotwell, Treasurer, and I discussed the same points as we prepared our communication to the membership. It’s always a balance, we felt that letting the membership know sooner that a significant dues increase was being presented out weighted a long communication process.
In addition, we need to be more proactive in using technology to improve access to information for the meetings while also reviewing our By-Laws to ensure that they align with these suggestions and recommendations; therefore, we will be looking for more opportunities where we can implement these types of avenues. One concept has already been approved through a By-Law change which allows for electronic voting by members.
The budget process and review which is the reason for the 8.25% dues increase was comprehensive and thorough. I believe anyone that attended the meeting recognized that after the presentation. For those that could not attend, it is important to let you know that Maggie, Chris, Tina and others reviewed all expenses by department over many hours in the last two months to deliver a balanced budget that supports all the events and amenities you have come to enjoy at our club. For those members who did not attend the Annual Meeting, copies of the 2023 operating and capital budgets along with the audited financial statement are available in the Club Office.
My final note on this subject is to remember it’s our club and we all care about it being successful. We will have different opinions from time-to-time and disagree. That’s ok, but please be respectful and remember to keep these discussions within the TVCC family.
We have had many different social events over the past two months and the participation from membership has been fantastic. All of the events have been selling out whether it was Family Fun Night or the two Bourbon Tastings. The warm weather even allowed for the greens to open for a round of golf in February, which is amazing!
I want to thank everyone for their continued support of the staff, board and committee members who participate in making our club great. Please continue to remain involved. Thank You!
2 March FROM THE DESK OF YOUR PRESIDENT
Christopher M. Myslow
It is a sincere honor to be a part of the Transit Valley community as your General Manager and Chief Operating Officer. There are many positive developments to report as a result of my initial months with you.
First, my team and I have worked diligently to prepare a welldefined budget that builds in cost control measures in supply management, purchasing options such as competitive bidding, and time management systems for labor control which provides monetary guidance for each department to set realistic goals going forward.
Not only have we successfully executed that task, but we have also instituted a rigorous budgetary review process to keep the Board of Governors and our members apprised of our ongoing financial position. This hard work will lead to solid results in 2023.
Our emphasis though goes much further beyond just a highly detailed preparation of our finances. My team is also focused on delivering even higher customer service standards as well as first-class events that increase member and guest participation in YOUR club. The staff has looked at each segment of our TVCC demographics and has created event opportunities in 2023 for all, both in the clubhouse and in our outdoor areas.
To support this important effort, your Board and Management Team are developing feasible solutions to address several challenges that include attracting and retaining top staff and managers in this highly competitive job market. The generosity of our membership towards the staff has certainly helped us retain our strongest people.
In addition, the difficult work of dealing with the effects of inflation, especially in food and beverage items, continues every day as all of us are experiencing in our daily lives. Please be assured we will never compromise on quality. With the cost containment measures that we have put in place, our overall operation is expected to deliver strong results for our members.
All of these positive developments will contribute greatly to attaining desired membership levels and I am pleased to announce that our membership is still very strong. Our inquiries continue to come in daily and I am confident that we will meet our goal of 350 golfing members by June. It is certainly helpful to have Tina at the helm guiding the membership process.
As your General Manager/COO, I have made the following commitment to the Board of Governors and to all of you as our members:
1. Providing Detailed Budget Preparation
As outlined above, the 2023 budget is tightly prepared with achievable goals for our entire team. My work with the Board and the Finance Committee will yield the results that the TVCC membership expects.
2. Successfully Completing the Course Irrigation Project
The membership-approved Irrigation Project will be the single largest capital expenditure of 2023.
3 March FROM THE DESK OF YOUR CHIEF
OPERATING OFFICER & GENERAL MANAGER
Christopher M. Myslow
My goal is to deliver the project on time, on budget and with the least interruption to everyday play. The contractor will begin the work as soon as the weather permits this Spring and is expected to be completed in around the Memorial Day timeframe barring any major setbacks.
3. Improving Member Communications
I have committed to improving communication to all members and stakeholders in 2023. It is my hope that you have already seen our increased social media presence. Not only do we want to keep you informed about all of the exciting details of the 2023 Transit Valley season, but we want to provide more streamlined ways to deliver you the information that you desire. We are increasing our SMS text messaging program as well to give the most up-to-the-minute details on club activities. The Divot will continue to be our primary communications source but we will look to reformat this in 2023 for easier utilization.
4. Developing Top-Notch Staff
I am personally committed to helping my entire leadership team grow and develop their skills. I have asked the Board of Governors to allow me to provide the team with the tools and the training necessary for them to be successful and grow in their disciplines. Retaining our wonderful team here at Transit Valley will be a key focus in 2023.
5. Ensuring Long Range Planning
The future success of Transit Valley Country Club is highly achievable with a detailed long range plan. In 2023, I will be working with the Long Range Planning Committee to help chart the course for our future success. That success will be dependent upon strategic investments that factor into our organizational goals of being a family-oriented club. As always, I welcome everyone’s ideas and suggestions that are for the greater good of the entire club. Again, It has been an honor to serve you for my first four months here at Transit Valley Country Club. I hope that I have conveyed a clear picture of what to expect in 2023 and have created a sense of excitement for what will be an amazing year. Membership levels are at record highs, and demand remains steady.
It is great to be at TVCC and thank you all for being so welcoming!
I look forward to seeing all of you at YOUR club.

Ultimate Desserts!
As we continue towards the summer season, I would like to inform you of some updates to our dessert program that is one more step towards improving your member experience. We are pleased to inform you that our new pastry chef, Anna, has been added to our culinary team. Anna who was born and raised in Buffalo has worked in various bakeries for 20 years. Now that Anna has been acclimated with the Club, we are kindly recommending that you support this new amenity by refraining from bringing in outside cakes and desserts. This pastry team of experts will be able to provide a level of pastry and cake offerings that will fit your dining and event expectations. Need an ultimate dessert to go? 1) Kids’ Club will be provided every Friday and Saturday evening from 5:15PM - 9:15PM and will be for children ages 3 and up (who can use the restroom independently). All parents and grandparents must remain in the Clubhouse at all times. We ask that you refrain from leaving your children to use the practice facilities, play golf, tennis, pickleball or visit the pool area.
2) The staff in the Kids’ Club is there to provide entertainment for your children. Their duties do not include that of a babysitter or childcare giver.
3) Parents are always responsible for the behavior of their children while in the Club. Children must refrain from these behaviors in order to ensure an enjoyable experience for all members.
The Kids’ Club Program was developed so that families of all ages could use the Club together. Thank you for your kindness and understanding in assisting us to ensure that the needs and privileges of all of our members are being met.

A Message from The Golf Professional Jonathan
Decker, PGA Head Golf Professional
As we enter the month of March, it means we are that much closer to the start of the 2023 golf season at Transit Valley. I regret to share that after five successful seasons at the club, assistant professional Mark Lesinski has accepted a year-round position at Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach, Florida. We were fortunate to have Mark as part of our team, and while sad for his departure, this will allow Mark the opportunity for continued personal and professional growth. Adam and Eric will be returning for their sixth and fifth seasons respectively this spring and I am currently in the process of filling the position of our third assistant golf professional. Many of our outside golf staff will be returning as well once the weather turns.
Spring gOlf reMinDerS
As we to start to ease our way back to playing the course, please continue to be mindful of course care habits that make a positive impact on the golf course. We ask that you continue to fix ball marks properly (push, don’t prey), replace divots or fill them with sand, and smooth over footprints in bunkers or use a rake if available. Please be aware of the possibility of frost on cooler mornings to prevent damage to the turf.

We are fortunate in 2023 that there are a wide array of equipment options for junior golfers. Using properly sized clubs will promote better swing mechanics, increased swing speed, and improved ability compared using over-sized adult clubs. In the Transit Valley Golf Shop we proudly carry US Kids Golf equipment, as each set is scaled proportionately for length, weight, shaft flex, and grip size. There are eleven different sizes, each with its own color, that are scaled based on the player’s height. As a starting point, a child’s driver should be approximately twothirds their overall height with the rest of the clubs in the set proportionate to the driver length (ex: a 45” tall child should play a 30” driver). I strongly discourage parents from purchasing clubs where the driver exceeds this ratio as it defeats the purpose of playing junior clubs. We would rather have them fitted based on their current, and as they grow, the now slightly smaller clubs will allow for greater speed and control. My staff and I are happy to assist in this fitting process or answer any questions.

A Message from the Greens Superintendent
Adam Mis
So far, and except for a few large storms, we have had a very mild winter. The warmer and wet weather has made it challenging to do work on the course, but we have had many equipment repairs and services to complete indoors before spring. If this weather continues, it will provide an opportunity for the irrigation contractor to get started sooner with a tentative start time towards the end of March. This is a very exciting time for us this is a big project to complete, but it will show dividends for many years to come as we continue to improve the overall conditions and golfing experiences on the course. As the project progresses, we will update you on a much more regular basis. With my experience in being part of three golf course irrigation projects, I can tell you that we have been very fortunate to purchase the best irrigation equipment and lock in one of the top contractors in the country to complete the project. As we move forward with the Master Plan work and course improvement, this new system is the main infrastructure piece to ensure that all our new improvements perform to the highest standard. We are looking forward to another great golf season. Special thanks for your continued support in keeping us going in the right direction which is to make TVCC the best option for a private club in Western New York.
A Message from the Greens Chair Geoffrey G. Burker
I know that I am not alone in counting down the days to golf season. Personally, I’ve never looked forward to a golf season more. Under Adam’s leadership we’ve seen the course make marked improvements, including condition and layout. And soon, with the benefit of a modern irrigation system we can look forward to further improvements. In 2023 we’ll continue to make modest enhancements - a surround that will improve playability behind number 12 and leveling the area surrounding the pond on 14, but the emphasis will be on maximizing the benefits of irrigation and delivering the best course conditions possible. Getting there will require some patience, but I can assure you that every effort will be made to limit disruption and to keep the project on schedule. As for the start date, that is weather dependent but we will be sure to keep you up to date as we get closer.
Adam’s team has continued to work throughout the winter, removing dead trees, rerouting paths, and working on several of the new tees. I know that the new tees have been the subject of plenty of discussion. New tees address a long-standing design issue - limited tee space. Small tee boxes create maintenance challenges that can become difficult to remediate - recall the old forward tee box on 9 which was in disrepair prior to implementing the new one. Furthermore, our course was among the longest in the area from the forward tees. The data on our course length brought to mind the “Tee it Forward” movement that was widely endorsed about 10 years ago, including PSAs from Jack Nicklaus.
Tee it Forward recognized that many golfers played from distances that were too long given their distance off the tee and provided recommended course length according to scoring ability and driver distance. While only 30% of golfers actually reported moving up, it was widely reported among those that did that they were having more fun (80%) and scoring better (75%). We need to do what we can to keep people in the game and enjoying the game. While making a change can be difficult, I think a survey of our own membership, after the introduction of silver tees would yield similar or better results. Limited tee space and length were glaringly obvious to our architect and with Adam’s resourcefulness we’ve been able to implement his recommendations without material financial impact. Keep in mind that the new tee boxes will not be immediately available and in the meantime, we’ll work with the Golf Committee to communicate and implement any revisions.
Lastly, in mid-February I drove by the course and saw pins and rollers only to be blanketed in snow and ice a week later. Nonetheless, I’d like to recognize Adam’s regard for the membership and going above and beyond to make the course available, even if only for a couple of days. When you see Adam or members of the team, stop and say thanks. They are a great group and work incredibly hard and expertly on your behalf.

Members are encouraged to consider common sense when making casual-attire decisions. We prefer our members dressup rather than dress-down when visiting the Club. While we expect that members will use good taste and judgment, the Board has directed Club Management to discreetly review any inappropriate casual attire decisions directly with the member to ensure that the Club maintains a casual environment that is enjoyable for everyone.
