W ELCOME

Welcome to the July edition of Enjoy Portishead in which we investigate local news and views and meet some Portishead characters. It?s also our pleasure to bring you more lifestyle features, details of what?s on in town this month and explore some of our local independent businesses

Thank you to everyone who took part in the June open gardens weekend,it was a great fun and extremely inspirational,as well as a great fundraiser for Portishead in Bloom

At last we?ve experienced some warm and dry weather, let?s hope we get plenty more, especially in time for the South West in Bloom judging on 15th July and of course for the Portishead Summer Show on the last weekend of the month. My trusted friend and business partner,Tracie Fry will be officially opening the show on Saturday 27th and we both look forward to seeing many of you there Good luck to everyone involved

Since our last magazine went to print quite a lot has happened in my life and I hope you won? t find it too self-indulgent of me to share my personal news with you My husband Derrick and I were looking forward to the imminent birth of our first grandchild at the end of May and when he decided to make an appearance in to this world he was in quite a hurry! My son, Jagger, called me for assistance just before 130am on Friday 31st May I had been anticipating the call at some point as I was going to babysit his partner Wray?s six-year-old son, while they went to the hospital for the birth What he didn? t tell me however was,the baby was rather impatient and was eager to make a big entrance Imagine my shock as I walked into their flat to find that baby Luca was already on his way The ambulance was estimated to be 15 minutes away and there was no way this little boy was waiting that long So,Jagger,Wray and

I did the best we could and thanks to the call handler?s expert advice, we managed to deliver Luca Lloyd William Fowler safely at 1.47am,while his brother Theo slept through it all in the next room! Luca was a little blue but breathing and moving and thankfully paramedics turned up within a couple of minutes of the birth, taking over and making sure both mother and baby were okay The paramedics and staff at Southmead were amazing and after a few days in NICU Luca was declared well enough to go home Now the fun starts and I am loving every minute of it? let the adventures begin!

I?m not sure how to follow that news, apart from saying thanks to everyone who has been in touch, keep your stories and ideas for the mag coming

I hope you enjoy this month?s issue and some summer weather! We?ll be back with our August issue in just a few weeks

PORTISHEAD SUMMERSHOW

The longest running community event in our town

The Portishead Summer Show is a combination of a traditional horticultural and handicraft show and a country fair, providing an ideal family day out with something to interest all ages Organised, run and funded by Portishead Horticultural Society,it is the oldest community event in Portishead having begun 1863

The show is primarily an opportunity for the Portishead community, young and old,to come together in the summer to showcase local talent entering the hundreds of different competition classes,in addition to enjoying the arena entertainment, stalls and refreshments The event combines the spirit of a community fair with the expectations of a national show, delivering a weekend to remember right on our doorstep year after year

Costing in excess of £30,000 to put on,organisers are grateful to the many patrons, sponsors and members for their continued support; all the local traders who purchase space, donate raffle prizes and sell schedules; volunteers and visitors

SUMMERFUN

Two action- packed days full of activities and attractions

Meet giant tortoises, watch a traditional Punch and Judy Show, join a community circus, enter the dog show,be entertained by children dancing, enjoy a refreshing drink in the sunshine while listening to live music? whether you want to get actively involved in events or just sit and watch the world go by,there?s something for everyone at this year?s Portishead Summer Show

The show will be officially opened by Enjoy?s very own creative director,Tracie Fry,who is honoured to do so at midday on Saturday 27th July in the Show Field on Clevedon Road

Be prepared for sensory overload as three exhibition marquees greet you with a kaleidoscope of colour and fragrance Row after row of magnificent creations from the finest flowers, plants and produce to cookery, preserves, handicrafts and photography will be displayed in friendly competition with entrants all vying for a prestigious certificate, cup or trophy

It might be too late to start growing produce for this year?s show but it?s certainly not too late to join in some of the other classes, with many entries being due in just days before the event or on the actual day Choose from cookery, scarecrow making, handwriting, photography, art, handicrafts, poetry? and that just touches the surface There are children?s classes too,so why not sit down with the youngsters and get them making a leaf collage, creating a miniature garden in a saucer, building Lego models or decorating biscuits - there are competition classes for all these, many with age group categories starting at pre-school right through to teenagers

Perhaps one of the most cherished aspects of the summer show is the opportunity it provides to support local artisans and businesses It?s a fantastic opportunity for craft and local produce vendors to showcase their wares This year stands range from handmade cards, quilts, toys and woodcraft to local honey, gin, chocolates and cakes, many of which cannot be found anywhere else By purchasing from these traders, show goers not only take home a special memento of their visit but also contribute to the local economy and support local small

businesses In addition there will be an array of stands from local organisations, community groups and charities

Don? t miss the fancy dress competition for children under 10 years of age with a winner?s cup up for grabs, this year, once again, kindly sponsored by FH Halliday & Son The competition takes place on Saturday 27th July in the main arena at 2pm There is no need to enter beforehand, just turn up in fancy dress,go to the main arena at 2pm and join in the parade

Do go along and enjoy this great weekend event ? we look forward to seeing you there!

By purchasing your tickets in advance you can help to take much of the pressure off the organisers To book or to find out more about the weekend?s activities visit www portisheadsum m ershow com

SEE YOU AT THE SHOW !

Local radio,TV and podcast presenter Ian Downsy talks about forward planning and supporting the local community

Most industries need forward planning At the radio station we would always be looking at least three to six months ahead for events, anniversaries, big movie releases or new TV shows to create ideas and promotional campaigns for At ITV West Country there are both daily and weekly planning meetings and then a meeting called ?future planning?ensuring we?re not only across today?s news and things that are happening this week, but also forward planning for bigger events such as the recent D-DAYremembrance coverage

Back in my radio days when a new Avengers movie came out,we might run a competition searching for local superheroes who are really making a difference in their community or on Valentine?s Day we might want to play love song dedications for couples Then we?d look ahead to local events such as fetes, festivals and carnivals Basically, you could be planning for Easter over your Christmas dinner and by the time the ice cream season hits you?d already be thinking about bonfire night!

There is a big part of my typically Taurean brain that loves this regularity and familiarity and even though the sun is shining while writing this in the middle of June, the phone call I?m currently on is about who might be turning on the Christmas lights in the freezing cold this year (no I can? t tell you,it?s a secret)

One of my favourite texts to receive each year usually arrives around the middle of May It?s from Mike Grandfield, president of the Portishead Summer

Show, enquiring about my availability for announcing over the show weekend For a good few years now,I?ve appeared on the rota of people who appear on the microphone letting everyone know what?s going on and where they can see and do things at the show This is the perfect opportunity for me to do something for the community, using some of my professional skills to benefit a local event I love chatting to the exhibitors and stall holders and seeing what amazing crafts they're selling or finding out about local topics I had no idea about Last year I spent a good 20 minutes learning about how bees make honey and then another 20 minutes sampling Freddie B?s gin ? whilst off duty though, just in case you thought I might drink on the job!

The Portishead Summer show is a fantastic opportunity for us all to get together to support local businesses and community organisations It takes a huge amount of organisation from the amazingly dedicated team of volunteers and unsurprisingly a big chunk of cash to keep it going,so please support it where you can

This year, while Enjoy?s Tracie Fry is officially opening the show on Saturday 27th July,I?m down for announcing on the iconic Sunday afternoon slot,so if you?re heading down there, listen out for my dulcet tones and come and say hi!

SUMMERSAFETY FORPETS

Seasonal advice from the team at Watkins and Tasker vets

Keeping Cool

Temperatures of more than 20°C can put your pet at risk of heatstroke Common clinical signs of heatstroke in pets include:excessive panting, dribbling, diarrhoea, vomiting and collapse

You can reduce the risk of heatstroke by:always providing access to fresh water, exercising early in the morning when temperatures are lower, using a cooling mat or paddling pool You can also make ice treats, freezing their treats or food in a Kong or on a LickiMat Regular grooming to prevent matting and fur being too thick will also help

Blue-Green Algae Intoxication

Dogs enjoying playing in the water, especially during the summer months but do be aware of blue-green algae which can be dangerous to pets Look online to familiarise yourself with the algae and call your vet immediately if you believe you dog has had contact with blue-green algae Here are some of the signs which could indicate intoxication:vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, weakness or collapse, disorientation and breathing difficulties

If you are concerned about how to keep your pet (no matter what species) safe during the hotter months, talk to your vet or veterinary nurse

WALKIN? THE DOG

Louise Evans shares one of her dog walks with Enjoy

Max our terrier looks forward to a sunny dry weekend Most days we are fortunate enough to step out and wander down the road to Merlin Park a picturesque green space that beckons casual walkers, hikers, joggers and family ramblers as well as dog walkers Here you will always find friends old and new to talk to while the dogs run about and burn off some energy, however,on a dry weekend we rope the kids in and head off to the bottom right corner of Merlin Park, past the zip wire and down through the trees where you will find a 'kissing gate' leading to fields

The first field to your right often has tall grasses which come well over knee height, but you will see a clear pathway to follow along the top edge This is where the boys like to throw the ball for Max,as he can't quite see over the grass and so will bounce through it looking for his ball, stopping occasionally while trying to spot us as we follow the path along the top of the field This usually develops into a hilarious game of hide-and-seek as the boys duck down out of sight, but often they will be ignored as

TIPSFORSUMMERDOG WALKING

Always take cold water with you for you and your pet

Max picks up the scent of a pheasant or some rabbits and wanders off for while As we reach the end of this field we enter a second field, below the police headquarters, this will take you as far as Valley Road From there you can take a left and wander down to the woodland walk on your left above Black Rock Quarry but to be honest that?s a walk for another day! We simply stay in the field and take a left to do a loop back to the long grass and eventually back to Merlin Park where we can sit and look over the valley while the boys have a play on the zip wire and other play apparatus and Max makes new friends

Check if pavements are too hot for your dog to walk on by placing the back of your hand on the surface of the pavement for a few seconds If it's too hot for your hand,it?s too hot for your dog?s paws

Minimise your dog?s exposure to direct sunlight by choosing shaded paths

Take frequent breaks - during hot walks allow your pet to stop and rest in the shade as often as they need

Make your dog walks shorter in the hotter weather ? two short walks might be better than one long walk

If you have a favorite dog walk you would like to share please em ail editor enjoyportishead@gm ail com

EXCITING TIMES!

Studio spaces,pop-up shops and maybe even a market hallchanges are afoot in Portishead High Street

After 21years of working in Portishead High Street,Jon at Carey?s Home and Garden Centre is handing over the reins of the business to his nephew Tom Nicholls, son of Jon?s sister Sarah

Although Tom spent many of his younger years with his family in and around Portishead,he moved to London as a young adult The draw of community however and the wonderful mix of coast and countryside North Somerset offers never left him So when taking over the business was raised he went for it!

Now Tom and his partner Agata have moved to Portishead together and they bring with them many exciting ideas for Carey?s and for our town?s High Street

Tom said:?I?ve had many different jobs and experiences since I left Nailsea School, living in different parts of this country and others I often worked in communities to build amenities and arrange novel experiences, from organising street parties and arranging play street schemes,to building parklets and working to support less fortunate people to have more positive futures I enjoy being at the heart of projects that foster community spirit and manifest change for the better With Carey?s already central to the High Street,I?d like it to offer more space to creative people and activities while building on the practical and artistic materials we?re known for ?

Most local independent retailers know how hard it is to make a good living from their business in the current economic climate and often need to think outside the box to make it work Over the years Jon has reduced his shop front space to allow other retailers to set up shop alongside Careys in smaller more affordable premises, including Muse,Kurdish Barbers and Sarah Tynan Flowers Tom?s mum Sarah once ran the gift shop Gosh in one of the smaller units Jon created

So what changes can we expect from Tom at Careys?

Tom explains:?I want to encourage people to come to Carey?s and stay here to build things, sell stuff and teach others, make use of our central position to meet like minded people or try a pop-up business I?m up for different ideas that bring benefit to the Portishead community, but I?d like to reassure the local community that at Careys the haberdashery

will remain in the front shop,I have no plans to remove that or other parts of the business that are needed locally

?For many years the picture framing department on the first floor has been a much appreciated, well-used facility I don? t really want to lose that but our framer has moved on leaving us with the space but not the expertise So I?m really looking for someone to take on the picture framing department as an autonomous business and make it their own There is scope for the space to be used for things in addition to the framing, maybe art or something similar, yes? it would make a terrific art gallery For the time being Agata will be selling designer clothes, largely from the 60s to the 90s She?s got a fantastic stock that she?s built up and will pair it with jewellery and objects

Careys has so much space at the back, beyond that used for the diy and builders?shop, that just needs windows to make units appealing for small businesses, perhaps creatives I already have a cousin interested in setting up a woodcraft studio I don? t want the buildings to be used as office space; I see them providing small affordable retail units or studios There?s a bit of work to be done yet but who

knows,we might even get that seven-day-a-week marketplace everyone keeps wishing for And dare I say it? there could also be room for a post office if anyone is interested in taking that on!?

FROM LITTLEACORNS...

Noah?s Ark has evolved from a working dairy farm to an internationally recognised award- winning zoo and registered conservation charity

Award-winning zoo and charity,Noah?s Ark Zoo Farm in Wraxall, less than 15 minutes drive from Portishead,is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new vision and the launch of an ambitious five-year strategic plan Home of the big zoo animals,Noah?s Ark has grown from a family-run dairy farm to a modern day charity, with a focus on conservation, education, people and wellbeing

From 1962 Anthony and Christina Bush worked together as dairy farmers at Moat House Farm, which was part of the Wraxall Estate, where they brought up their four children In the mid 1990s they opportunity arose to purchase the 310 acre farm from the Wraxall Estate, however in order to finance this, the Bush family needed to sell their Friesian herd and their farm machinery They then concentrated on the arable land and raising sheep but it was at this time the couple began to consider opening the farm to visitors In 1998 they built a toilet, barn, small café and

created a children?s play area and opened their doors to the public as Noah?s Ark It began with farm and domestic animals, plus a few lamas and alpacas As the attraction gained popularity the animal collection expanded and went on to include more exotic animals including tigers, lions and rhinos

As Noah?s Ark celebrates its 25th anniversary, here?s a snapshot of how the site has evolved from a working dairy farm to an internationally recognised and award-winning zoo

CHILD?SPLAY

From babies to preschoolers, transition to nursery can be a very positive experience

at The Nursery in Portishead

Choosing to send your child to nursery is a big decision; some parents have little choice as they need to return to work, while others are able to weigh up the benefits of whether to and if so when to, introduce their child to nursery

Feeling uneasy about being apart from your child is natural, especially when they are babies, but placing your child in the right nursery care can have multiple benefits and can be a very positive experience

As a mum myself I understand Nursery may be one of the first times your child has been away from you for any period of time, which can be daunting for you both at first, however,it gives your child the opportunity to be independent,to explore and make other relationships, which is critical for their long-term wellbeing That independence can nurture your child?s self-confidence and help develop their own personality and discover more about life outside the family unit

There?s a myth that if you place your child in a private nursery you need to commit to five days a week, but that?s just not true A session here at The Nursery is either a morning or an afternoon and families can sign up for as many or as few sessions as they wish

At The Nursery we offer a wide range of activities, resources and experiences to stimulate and engage your little one Having so many different things for your child to discover and explore, helps to develop their interests and encourages them to try new things out for themselves

The Nursery has a reputation for always going above and beyond Our nursery is rated outstanding by Ofsted,as are many other local nurseries, however our aim is to always be outstanding in everything we do,

not just make sure we are outstanding for an inspection To ensure our standards and delivery are always of the highest level we engage an external inspector to monitor standards on a monthly basis

Every day at The Nursery is packed with fun and imagination, with new friends to make and new skills to learn Our highly experienced and dedicated team create a safe and nurturing environment where children explore, enquire, discover and thrive

We embrace the new government funding to support working parents and have finance experts available to help explain the new funding for two-year-olds brought in,in April and the new funding for babies from nine months being introduced in September

If you have a little one please plan ahead as demand for babies to join us in September is expected to be high

If you would like to book a show around to see our nursery in action, please call us on 01275 402140 or email manager@thenursery ukcom

We would love to meet you!

WHEN I GROW UP I WANT TO BE?

When Vic Long accepted his first full- tim e job as a clerical assistant working for the railway in 1959, it was a far cry from his latest title as one of the longest serving pub landlords in the country

Vic Long, owner of The Ship in Portishead, turns 81this month In 2023 he celebrated 50 years of pulling pints at his Redcliff Bay pub and received a letter from King Charles III to mark the occasion,a far cry from his first job as a clerical assistant for the railway Vic grew up in Portishead and attended St Peter?s School before passing his 11+ exam After that he attended Sexey?s Gramar School in Blackford as a boarder for a couple of years before moving to Weston-super-Mare Grammar School He remembers he would catch the coach every

morning at 745am getting back to Portishead around 5 30pm Despite the long school day,Vic still found time to work part-time in jobs that ranged from selling newspapers on the Cabstand to working in Cyril Wilmott?s butchers shop

On leaving school he worked as a clerical assistant, while also working part time at local pubs including the White Lion (Old Mill),Royal Hotel,Hole in One (The Windmill) and Bay Hotel and so his love for the hospitality industry began

INTERVIEW

Vic Long is believed to be one of the longest serving landlords in the country and he?s happy to say he has no plans to call time on his career any time soon

In the 1970s Vic Long and a business partner bought a plot of land in Redcliff Bay with planning permission to build a pub The Ship opened on 8th November 1973 More than 50 years on and Vic and his wife Debbie are still serving customers in their popular hostelry that overlooks the Bristol Channel and even though their son George has carved his own life now, he is never very far away and always willing to lend a hand when necessary Tracey Fowler talked to Vic

50 years as a pub landlord is a long tim e, how did it all begin?

I worked behind the bar of a number of pubs in Portishead long before opening The Ship,so my experience of the pub trade goes back even longer than half a century I worked at the Hole In One from 1966 to 1970,when a business partner and I then took on The Beverley Cafe at 18 High Street It was a busy transport type café with much of its custom being the workforce involved in all the building going on at the time, which included the M5,Portbury Dock and the development of Wyndham Way In 1971an opportunity presented itself for us to take on a pub in Wiltshire called The Kicking Donkey That worked well but I love my home town and so when the chance came to purchase the land at Redcliff Bay with planning permission to build a pub,it was too good an opportunity to miss

You?ve hit the headlines several tim es over the years haven? t you?

A few times, yes! I was surprised to see a press article suggesting I was Britain?s tallest landlord; I?m not sure who came up with that one I was pleased to get some media coverage as a founder member of Pride in Portishead,a community group which meets once a month to undertake litter picking in the town That was great because it encouraged more people to join in The most surprising press story for me however, was about me banning mobile phones I didn? t see that as a big deal but I got a lot of stick for it Customers said they didn? t want to spend their time in the pub

listening to other people?s phone conversations and

ringtones,so I decided that was fair enough and mobile phones were banned!

How have things changed over the years?

Many colourful characters have come and gone and prices have changed dramatically of course

Luckily the wonderful views from The Ship have remained and we still serve well-kept real ales Today some of the favourites include Honiton-based Otter and Cornish Doom Bar and we have draught Bass too This is a pub where people can enjoy a quiet drink,a game of bar-billiards if they so wish and good pub food We serve food daily but only at lunchtimes We also have bridge teams and regular quizzes

Madeira and Port o Sant o

A perfect twin centre holiday

Holidays are a great time to connect with your family or reunite with extended family and friends They are an opportunity to spend time together doing the things that you love and create memories to look back on in years to come Ensuring your holiday has something to offer everyone in the party is important for a relaxing enjoyable getaway

The Portugese islands of Madeira and Porto Santo, sitting in the Atlantic Ocean, couldn? t be more different but they can offer the perfect twin centre to ensure your holiday has something to suit everyone, whether you split your stay between the two islands or decide on island-hopping daytrips

While Madeira is a volcanic island rich in diversity, Porto Santo is a golden paradise boasting extensive soft, sandy beach and a turquoise sea

The Mediterranean climate makes the islands ideal for year-round outdoor activities suited to both sea enthusiasts and those who prefer land-based actvities The islands?warm waters invite a range of aquatic activities like snorkelling, diving, sailing, windsurfing, fishing and surfing, while breathtaking landscapes present exciting adventures for hikers and those who prefer to explore

This archipelago provides opportunities to swim in volcanic pools, stretch out across sunny beaches, take a boat trip to see whales or dolphins, hike to waterfalls, experience a mountain bike adventure or go canyoning in the heart of the Laurissilva Forest

Many hotels on the islands offer outstanding facilities,

some with beachfront access, swimming pools and outdoor activities for all ages The main mode of public transport is a bus network and of course, due to the size of the islands, you'll find you don't need to venture far to reach any of attractions, allowing you to cover much of what the islands have to offer in a fairly short time frame

With pleasant average temperatures of 25C in summer and 18C in winter, the archipelago?s wonderful climate allows you to get out exploring at any time of year

A world away from their mainland neighbours, whether you?re seeking relaxation or adventure, Madeira and Porto Santo really do have something to offer everyone, but don? t take our word for it ? Madeira and Porto Santa have their own tourist information site,it?s well worth a look at www visitm adeira com

WHYWE ALL NEED MASSAGE

at the many different health benefits of massage

Massage is often seen as a luxury, something you occasionally treat yourself to,but actually there are a lot of benefits of having regular massage treatment Let?s take a look?

Many people associate massage with being ?sporty? If you are active, training regularly and or competing, massage is a great way of helping your body to recover between training sessions and after events By improving circulation and increasing a muscle's ability to absorb nutrients and remove waste products, this allows for better recovery after exercising That in turn can help with lowering the risk of injury due to having fatigued muscles. The old adage ?prevention is better than cure?springs to mind

However,if you?re not as active massage can still be extremely beneficial to you It can promote relaxation by increasing blood flow and temperature, decreasing tension within the muscles Many of us struggle to relax and so create ?tight?muscles within our bodies which can pull our joints into different positions; this can result in poor posture, pain and discomfort Relaxing the tension will allow the body to move more freely and allow your body to maintain a

better posture Alongside mobility exercises and stretches, massage can be a fantastic way to feel more flexible, more supple and calmer

People who suffer with arthritis often find that massage is a good way to help manage their symptoms for the same reasons mentioned above. They can find it helps the joints to feel more mobile and less painful, making it easier to perform everyday tasks and keep active As we often say as therapists, motion is lotion!

BENEFITSOFMASSAGE

·Helps to reduce pain and m uscle tightness

Reduces stress

Prom otes relaxation

Helps injury recovery

Stim ulates our happy horm ones

·Im proves the work of the im m une system

Walnut Grove massage therapist Tom Ridell looks

Massage treatment also stimulates the release of certain hormones - dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin These are three hormones within the body which are known as our ?happy hormones?,helping us to feel positive and motivated If we feel happier we are more likely to want to stay active and move more which then helps with the stiffness we have previously mentioned and reduces injury risk

Research also suggests that massage treatments

can help strengthen the body's immune response, helping your body to fight off viruses With massage helping to reduce stress this positively impacts the immune system, increasing the activity of white blood cells that fight diseases and increasing circulation and lymphatic flow, helping move nutrients and filter waste

So,as you can see there are many reasons as to why you might benefit from ?treating?yourself to a massage!

At Walnut Grove we have a variety of different types of massage from sports massage (not just for the sports people amongst you),which is a firmer type of massage, specific to certain areas that need it eg a hamstring injury or a shoulder issue,to Swedish massage which is a whole body holistic massage Hot stone massage is also available, which uses heat to help relax the muscles further

If you are not sure what kind of massage would benefit you most, just give a call and someone will be pleased to help guide you to a new you!

Experim ent with Marinades and Rubs

Adding flavour and tenderness to your grilled meats using different marinades and rubs is all part of the fun of barbecuing

Explore Different Cuts of Meat

Don't limit yourself to burgers and hot dogs Try grilling steaks, ribs, chicken thighs; explore different cuts of meat or even whole fish

Get Creative with Vegetables

Grilled vegetables are not only delicious but also a healthy addition to any barbecue menu Experiment with a variety of veggies like courgettes, bell peppers, mushrooms, shallots, asparagus, corn and aubergines Grill them directly on the grates or use skewers for veggie kebabs

Don't Forget the Sides

Enjoy the Mom ent

It?s easy to get so involved in the cooking that you forget to relax and enjoy yourself The barbecue season is a great time for creating lasting memories with loved ones Take the time to savour the delicious food, engage in meaningful conversations and appreciate the simple joys of outdoor dining

HOME refreshyour

Bring the fresh smells of summer into your home with simple natural solutions you can make yourself by Tracie Fry

It doesn't matter how lovely your home looks,a nasty pong will bring the atmosphere down; in our house it's usually a damp dog,a dumped sports bag or last night's spag bol! In my opinion, commercial air fresheners just add to the nasty smell and many contain harsh chemicals which are not good for the planet and often irritate skin There are plenty of DIYalternatives available online,so this month I decided to try some out and bring you the best of these tried and tested alternatives

Deodorising Cube:you will need - 2 cups baking soda | 1cup water | 5-10 drops peppermint and/or lemon essential oil | silicone mould/ice cube tray Add 5-10 drops of your essential oil to about 1/2 cup of water I like the freshness of peppermint and the zesty scent of lemon but use essential oils you like the smell of Add the oil and water mix to the baking soda and stir Keep adding a few drops of water until the mixture is a very thick paste Divide this into your moulds and leave to dry for up to 48 hours Once hardened place your deodoriser cube anywhere that could use a little freshening up Inside your bin, under the sink or next to the laundry basket 1.

3.

2.

Gel Air Freshener:have fun making these super easy and lovely looking gel fresheners in a jar You will need:1-2 small jars | 1pack gelatin | 2 cups water | 1tbls vodka | 20?30 drops essential oil I used eucalyptus and orange Boil 1cup of water in a small pan and add the gelatin stirring until it dissolves, next add the other cup of water, the vodka and the essential oils and mix it all up If you?re feeling creative you can pop some decoration in your jar, maybe some shells or a sprig of rosemary and then pour your mixture over Pop your jar/jars into the fridge overnight and viola they will be set and ready to use in the morning

When life gives you lemons, clean up! Your home will smell amazing with this DIYlemon-based,natural cleaning spray All you need is one-part white vinegar, one part water and some lemon rind Combine the ingredients into a glass jar, shake and leave to infuse for up to a week before use.Once infused pour the solution into a spray bottle and this lemony scented infusion is ready to use, ideal for wiping down bathrooms, kitchen counters, your dishwasher and fridge

Here are some tips I learned along the way sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of your bin is a great way to make sure bad smells are absorbed You can also sprinkle onto doormats and carpets to soak up some of those pet odours, leave for a few minutes, then vacuum Finally add half a cup of baking soda to your laundry wash to not only keep your whites, white but it also lifts out any nasty smells

NB.It's not recommended to spray homemade solutions directly on to fabrics,as oils may leave spots on your clothes or furniture

Nick explained: ?Last year beautiful Ellie Burbage was suddenly and inexplicably taken We had been privileged to watch her grow into a kind, intelligent and delightful young woman alongside our own children. Since then we have been in awe of our dear friends, Jon and Jo, her parents, who have managed to not only continue with life but have honoured her memory in many unique and extraordinary ways Their strength and resilience in such dark and difficult times has been inspiring A wider group of friends came together through school, university and working life and have stood together through many good times and bad To help Jon and Jo with their grief journey we?ve all set ourselves a challenge to walk the three highest peaks of Scotland, England and Wales in three days. Jon and Jo will walk with us and every step we take will be to honour and remember our dearest Ellie

?Ellie planned to be a doctor and spent a few days in cardiology at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath in preparation She would have made a fantastic doctor and therefore, we wish to continue to honour Ellie's wonderful memory by raising more life saving donations for the Super-Rehab Cardiology Research Program at the RUH We would be delighted if you could support us in our fundraising.?
