SEVERANCE TOWN COUNCIL
Message from Council Member Hessler
The Town of Severance has an amazing staff serving its residents. As they take care of our town and make us safe, you may not know that many of the bigger projects you’ve seen around town were completed without spending any of the Town of Severance citizen tax dollars For the October Scoop, I wanted to let everyone reading know about some of the wonderful things around town that have been paid for by grants that town management and staff have worked tirelessly to obtain for our community.
The Severance Police Station is a project that was paid for entirely through a grant and impact fees obtained by town management and staff. Although you may read on social media otherwise, our beautiful police station was not built using tax dollars. Two other projects that you’ve seen recently are the much-needed traffic lights at the intersections of Harmony (CR 74) and County Road 19, and Highway 392 and Country Road 23. Both of these projects were paid for with grant funding as well. The project at John Law Reservoir by the dog park to deepen and expand the borders of the lake was also completed at very low cost due to a partnership with the Loup Reservoir System for the Town of Severance citizens. This area will soon have a walking path and fishing access for everyone to enjoy. The community park that is being expanded with multiple new features also has a grant-funded outdoor activity space for adults to keep us active and moving. Over the past three years, approximately $3,231,348 has been obtained through grants for projects to better our community.
Many of you may know that grant funding is difficult to obtain and becoming scarcer over the years. It is amazing that our town management and staff are fiscally conscious enough to be creative in their search to find grant dollars to pay for these existing and future community resources The budget open house is planned for Oct 14 at the town hall I encourage all of you to come and provide your valuable input, ask questions, and be a part of the wonderful work that is shaping our community! Thanks for reading.

SEVERANCE POLICE DEPARTMENT
Crime Prevention Month
Each October, communities across the country come together to raise awareness about safety and crime prevention. It’s a great time to learn how small steps—like locking doors, keeping porch lights on, and watching out for neighbors—can make a big difference. The Severance Police Department encourages everyone to take part by practicing safe habits and staying engaged in our community. Together, we can keep Severance a safe place to live, work, and visit.
WINDSOR-SEVERANCE FIRE RESCUE
October is Fire Prevention Month!
Windsor Severance Fire Rescue’s Risk Reduction Division will be visiting pre-K, 1st, and 3rd grade classrooms in Weld RE-4 during October to teach the importance of fire safety The curriculum meets state standards and progresses with each grade level:
Pre-K students start with a story about Sparky the Fire Dog, learning what sounds a smoke alarm makes and practicing what to do when they hear that important "beep beep beep."
First graders build on what to do when they hear the sound of the smoke alarm, learning to stop what they’re doing, look for two ways out, feel the door with the back of their hand, and "get low and go" techniques. First grade also gets an exciting tour of our fire truck.
Third graders review what they learned in first grade and are introduced to the "Home Safety Patrol," where they practice making their homes as safe as possible. The importance of having a home escape plan and practicing it is a big focus here.
Parents, you're our partners in safety! If you have a student in these grades, please ask them what they learned about smoke alarms, what to do when one goes off, and take time to practice your family's home escape plan together.
This is one of the most crucial aspects of our work at WSFR. Reducing risk and educating our community are core to our mission, and we appreciate partnering with parents like you to help keep everyone safe.
