About this match programme By Richard Snowball In the 1970-71 season, York City were hoping for another promotion year, and coming into the match against Stockport County played on March 19, 1971, they were in the middle of a run of 16 games unbeaten. This run lasted from February 6 till April 19 when they lost at home to Oldham Athletic in front of a crowd of 14,321. City achieved their goal of promotion, even though they also lost the last two matches of the season, and they gained the fourth promotion spot behind Notts Co., Bournemouth and Oldham. The Stockport game ended in another victory by 2-1 with goals from Kevin McMahon and Paul Aimson in front of a Bootham Crescent crowd of 6,251. Aimson's goal was the second game in a run of scoring in seven consecutive League matches, only previously achieved by Jimmy Cowie, Billy Fenton and Arthur Bottom. Paul Aimson finished top goal scorer with 26 League and five Cup goals, including the long remembered equaliser in the 3-3 draw with Southampton in the FA Cup 4th round.
