By Richard Snowball Having had to apply for re-election the previous season, York City needed to have a better one in 1964-65 and had signed Paul Aimson, Andy Provan and Dennis Walker in the close season.

These three players proved to be the catalyst, and coming into the last game of the season, York needed to win to secure promotion to Division Three.

York had been in tremendous home form having won their last thirteen matches and hopes were high.

York were lying second in the table and their opponents on April 24, 1965, for this Saturday evening match were Halifax Town, who were third from the bottom.

York had beaten Lincoln City 3-0 at home the previous Monday in front of an attendance of 10,800, and an even bigger crowd of 12,719 turned out for this one.

They were not disappointed as City cruised to a 4-0 victory and secured third place in the table and promotion.

Millwall, who had games in hand and won all of them, pipped York for second place on goal average, as it was in those days, not goal difference as it is now.

Over the season York scored 91 goals and the new signings all scored double figures, Aimson (26), Provan (18) and Walker (15) and York had won 20 of their 23 home matches scoring 63 goals in the process.
