About this match programme By Richard Snowball In season 1961-62, York City were challenging for promotion again after missing out the previous season when finishing fifth, albeit nine points behind the fourth club, so not even a near miss. Coming into York's last game of the season played at home to Aldershot on April 28, 1962, things were tight at the top of Division Four. York City were lying fourth in the table but three points covered five teams around them, and three of those sides had a game in hand on York, including their opponents that day Aldershot, so nothing less than a win was necessary, and then hope that other results went their way. One of the biggest crowds of the season (7,321), turned out at Bootham Crescent to urge the team on and a very nervous ninety minutes was expected. York had only lost two home matches all season scoring 62 goals in the process and only failing to score against one team, Millwall who were league leaders, so expectation were high. However it all turned out to be too much and they lost the game 1-0 to finish sixth in the League, two points off a promotion place and one point in front of Aldershot. Top goal scorer that season was winger Jimmy Weir who was happy on either wing and scored 28 goals in 41 matches.
