For me personally August is an extremely busy month as I am undertaking three of life's most stressful events, getting married to my wonderful fiancé Alex, moving house and opening the new office, let's hope 3 is the magic number!

On the 4th August, exactly 100 years since World War 1 was declared a new commemorative information board will be unveiled at Broomfield Park’s Remembrance Garden. Community News Summer is always a great time to live in Enfield as we are lucky to have a number of fantastic events happening across the borough, arranged by community groups and volunteers to help bring residents together.

Anthony Webb joined in the fun and celebrations at three of these events over the last month giving us the opportunity to connect with our clients and community at a grassroots level.

Conway Recreation Ground Centenary Celebrations On Sunday, 29th June, Friends of the Rec, a group of volunteers at the Conway Road Recreation Ground, welcomed the community to the Rec for their centenary celebration, formerly opened by local resident Sir William Atkinson. Anthony Webb were proud to sponsor the celebration that, despite the rain, attracted neighbours and their families.

Keith Weller, chairman of Friends of the Rec, said: “More than 300 people braved some slightly 'iffy' weather to join the Friends of Conway Recreation Ground in celebrating the centenary of the creation of the park as a public space.

The event was twinned with the Big Lunch encouraged nationally by the Eden Project. Visitors enjoyed a historical display, a World War I allotment stall, The Oakfield String Quartet, park tours, Punch and Judy, face painting of little creatures from the park, snacks, drinks, a treasure trail and lots of entertainment for children. The Friends of the Park appreciated the support of local business and the community and are delighted to say that the day raised some helpful funds for the continuing work in the Rec.” The Friends of the Rec welcome volunteers, to get involved please, email friendsatconwayrec@gmail.com visit their facebook page or call Keith on 07810 621 779.

The Palmers Green Shopping Carnival On Saturday, 5th July, Green Lanes Business Association hosted the 2014 Palmers Green Shopping Carnival. This year saw the addition of stalls on the Triangle, two music stages, one on Aldermans Hill and the second at the top of Hazelwood Lane. The crowds were entertained by the choir and HazeSamba drumming troop from Hazelwood School,

stilt walkers and clowns, local Enfield Blaze cheerleaders that accompanied Enfield’s Carnival Queen, Enfield’s Mayor and Costas Georgiou on their parade float as they travelled the length of our high street.

The great British weather did bring the occasional rain shower, even so, the event gave businesses the opportunity to introduce themselves to locals, many stopping to talk.

Anthony Webb were giving out free Palmers Green tote bags, we still have a few left if you would like one, please pop into see us. It was also a great opportunity to tell people about our new office that will be opening on Aldermans Hill this August.

N21’s Super Summer Sunday The Super Summer Sunday held at the Woodcroft Wildspace, on Woodcroft road, Winchmore Hill on the 13th July, entertained families with live music, children’s shows, bouncy castles, sporting challenges, orienteering as well as fresh food and local business stallholders.

Anthony Webb had a stand at the event and met with locals in the beautiful backdrop of the nature reserve saved by conservationists. The event was well attended and raised £500 for three great causes.

Bob Ladell the lead volunteer at Woodcroft said, “A big thank-you to all the volunteers, stallholders and the Enfield community who helped make the N21 Super Summer Sunday, organised by Dani and Tracy, in aid of the Nightingale Centre, North London Hospice and Woodcroft Wildspace a thoroughly successful day enjoyed by all. The plan came together! Do visit again soon and enjoy the tranquillity of the Wildspace.”

Dani from Stardust Events, based in Enfield is hoping to make the event an annual attraction in Winchmore Hill. Woodcroft is a place where people can bring their children to learn about nature - insects, birds, small mammals, pond life, plants and trees in a natural habitat. by Costas Georgiou, costas.georgiou2@gmail.com The GLBA (Green Lanes Business Association) are pleased to inform you that this year’s newly named Palmers Green Shopping Carnival held on Saturday 5th July 2014 was a huge success, despite the rain showers in the morning.

The event was opened at 11am by the Mayor of Enfield, Councillor Ali Bakir and Enfield’s Carnival Queen. The Mayor, Enfield’s Carnival Queen and Costas Georgiou proceeded to welcome Palmers Green residents and visiters on a float that circled the high street. We were also joined at the event throughout the day by our three local Councillors.

The event was organised differently to previous years which saw “Kids Corner” at the junction of Hazelwood Lane and Green Lanes where we had the ever popular Punch and Judy show, Monkey Music, S.O.U.P Ukulele group, Steppaz Dance Group where we were lucky enough to watch a performance by this year’s “Youth Got Talent 2014 Winners”, and we were joined by Enfield Blaze Cheerleaders who strutted their stuff up and down Green Lanes. We also had various food outlets including El Dorado, candy floss and popcorn, burgers and hotdogs. The kids as always enjoyed the bouncy castle and merrygo-round.

This year we had a music band stage sponsored by City and Urban Estate Agents, where we had live music throughout the day performed by various local bands and artists. Further up on the Triangle – where the brand new three faced landmark clock was placed earlier that week – for the first time we

had stall holders including Talkies Cinema, Palmers Green and Southgate Life Magazine, Bookcafe and Baskervilles.

Aldermans Hill was not exempt from the fun! There was a second music band stage sponsored by Anthony Webb Estate Agents, where the public enjoyed Blues, Jazz and Rock music throughout the day. This year we had a second bouncy castle situated on Aldermans Hill which was sponsored by Winkworth Estate Agents.

It was fantastic to see the whole of Palmers Green bustling and busy the whole day – particularly as our event coincided with St Johns Church Annual Summer Fete and Ruth Winston House’s annual

summer event. The whole area had something going on from one end of the Town Centre to the other.

This generated a great community feel, which was heart-warming to see as everyone was wondering around enjoying the atmosphere and entertainment throughout the day.

The Palmers Green shopping festival always proves to be a light-hearted, fun day out for all the family and this year was certainly no exception. It brings the community together and reminds Enfield’s people what a fantastic Town Centre Palmers Green is. The GLBA would like to thank all the sponsors, entertainers and local residents of Palmers Green for their part in the Palmers Green Shopping Carnival.

The chairman, the members and committee of Green Lanes Business Association GLBA and Mark Leaver Town Centre Manager for Enfield Business Retailers Association EBRA who arranged this year’s event look forward to seeing you again next year.

Enfield residents could find out more about Enfield and what it had to offer, and we were putting them in touch with local independent traders and encouraging everyone to shop locally and use local services.

The aim was to strengthen the community and help improve Enfield’s economy.

We have had great success with our Directory, which has helped both local residents and local businesses, and our online community is a more personal and trusted source of information than the Yellow Pages could ever be. It is also much more fun…

Now that more of us are shopping locally and investing in the local economy, we would like to move on and help Enfield’s unemployed to find work locally. We set up our Job Board at the beginning of the year so that we could help local people

who are out of work to fill local job vacancies. It is a win win situation and it has been working well.

Having brought some community spirit back into the area, we want to encourage Enfield residents to find work in the Borough too. The vacancies on our ‘Jobs in Enfield’ section (found in the Welcome tab at present), are across the board and extremely varied. We are aiming for something for everyone.

There are full-time jobs, part-time jobs, some night jobs and even live-in jobs.

Some jobs are for skilled workers or require specific qualifications and there are others where no particular qualifications are needed at all, except a willingness to do the job well. Whether you are looking to earn the London Living Wage or £30,000 pa, or whether you want to work outside in the fresh air or inside in a cosy office, there is something there for you!

Unfortunately unemployment in Enfield is still rather high. At 7.5%, we are not the highest in London, that title goes to Barking and Dagenham with almost 10% unemployment, but nor are we the lowest.

The lowest is Kensington and Chelsea with 4% unemployment.

Councillorʼs Corner by Cllr. Bambos Charalambous The Redevelopment of Palmers Green Library Cllr.bambos.charalambous@enfield.gov.uk Tel: 020 8351 1362 Mobile: 07812 673075 I love libraries and as someone who also enjoys reading and learning I have always regarded the creation of public libraries under the Public Libraries Act 1850 was one of the most far reaching pieces of legislation which has done so much good for society. Some of the arguments espoused against the passing of this Act were that public libraries weren’t a necessity as literacy levels were low and that access to certain publications would lead to public agitation and unrest! Luckily the arguments for the Act were more rational and persuasive and local boroughs were given the power for the first time to provide public libraries. Public libraries were then seen as a being places for learning and self improvement and for the community to come together and whilst many things have changed over the last 164 years the principles underpinning that piece of legislation have not.

As someone who campaigned to save Palmers Green library from relocation, I was delighted that my colleagues on Enfield Council agreed in

October last year to fund significant improvements for the library. On 26 July the library closed its doors in order to undergo this major refurbishment which will see £4.455million spent on improving it.

Whilst the library is closed provision will made to accommodate increased visitors to other libraries and people will be reminded that any borrowed items will be able to be returned to any library and also reissued either on line or by telephone.

The refurbishment will include bringing more of the downstairs of the building into public use and also creating a community space for local people and the plans also include a GP surgery for much needed local health services.

To part pay for the library refurbishment Southgate Town Hall has been sold for housing development and the works to the town hall and library will be going on at the same time. The iconic facade of the Town Hall will remain. Whilst there will inevitably be some inconvenience for local residents and users I’m sure that when the library re-opens in early autumn 2015 that people will think that it is well worth the wait and we will have local community library that will serve the people of Palmers Green and beyond well into the middle part of this century. I can’t wait to start using it!

The entrance to the library will be improved with better access and some of the dead space at the Green Lanes entrance to the library will be brought into use making it look modern and welcoming from the street and also new inside but at the same time we hope to retain some of familiarity and charm of the old building. The library will have first rate facilities and upgraded technology and other improvements will ensure that the building is more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Some immediate benefits of stepping down last month as a ministerial aide have been to avoid the merry go round of the recent reshuffle and to be elected as a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). It is the oldest Commons Select Committee and arguably the most significant because it holds Government to account for providing sufficient value for taxpayers' money.

The PAC's work is not the preserve of political anoraks but deals with practical issues of real concern to constituents. For example the latest report called attention to a great adult social care squeeze. The PAC was particularly concerned that local authorities have cut costs, partly for paying lower fees to providers of care, which has led to very low pay for care workers, low skill levels within the workforce and inevitably poorer levels of service for users. Safeguarding referrals recorded by local authorities have risen 13% in the two years from 2011.

It is appalling that up to 220,000 people working in the care system, including some of my own constituents, earn less than minimum wage. In some areas, whilst local authorities might pay private providers £13 an hour, the worker only earns the minimum wage of around £6 per hour.

Therefore, to make improvements to social care in areas like Enfield, we need collaboration at every level of government. We need to make it clear to local authorities what the changes in the Care Act will mean for them; what impact they are having on carers and quality of care by driving down providers’ fees; and what scope there is for authorities to make further efficiency savings, taking account of both best practice benchmarking of cost and wider social, economic and demographic trends over which they have no control.

I do hope that Enfield Council will consider working with me, both as a local MP and a

member of the Committee of Public Accounts, to ensure that our carers are being paid properly and that the quality of care in Enfield is improving and not declining.

The subject of care for the vulnerable at the end of their lives was recently debated in the House of Lords. The Assisted Dying Bill would allow patients, given 6 months left to live, the right to die with assistance by a doctor's lethal injection.

I am helping to lead the opposition to this Bill when it reaches the Commons. It is a sensitive issue with examples of individuals in great pain wanting the freedom to choose when they die.

However I fear that a 'right to die' would become a 'duty to die' for vulnerable patients. We need to work harder at funding end of life social care and supporting quality palliative care, and not allow the door to be opened to legalising euthanasia.

I wonder how many local residents realise that Palmers Green once boasted a theatre that played to packed houses, week after week; featured many future stars in earlycareer appearances; received reviews from the national newspapers, and in the 1940s made television history. What is more, the theatre is still in use by local amateur groups today.

took out a lease on the venue to fulfil his ambition of becoming an actor-manager, renaming it the Intimate Theatre.

1940 to August 1941, when it reopened with local man Frederick Marlow as the new lessee.

‘The little theatre with the big reputation’ was one newspaper’s description of the Intimate Theatre in Palmers Green in the late 1930s an apt soubriquet for this well-loved suburban playhouse. Built as a parish hall for St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church in 1931, it boasted a stage, fully equipped to accommodate the local drama groups’ demands of the time, a sprung floor, ideal for dances, and a balcony where extra seating could be fitted. A useful building, then, used for a variety of local events, but probably no different from many other church halls up and down the land. However, the fate of this particular hall was to change radically in 1935 when the celebrated actor John Clements

The 458-seater playhouse opened its doors for the first time on Boxing Day, 1935 with a production of A.A. Milne’s play The Dover Road. Preparations for any new venture rarely run smoothly and the transformation of this venue was no exception. Fog delayed the delivery of the new tip-up seating for the stalls on Christmas Eve and, when they finally arrived, the workmen refused to install them as it was now Christmas Day! In true theatrical fashion the actors rolled up their sleeves and fitted the seating themselves to ensure the opening night went ahead.

After a week’s break, the company began their policy of staging a different play every week, slowly building up an audience base, with tickets priced at 3/6, 2/6, 1/10 and 1/.

Clements gave himself a punishing workload directing more than forty plays in the first year alone as well as playing roles in at least thirtyfour of them and dealing with the administration duties of an actor-manager! If this wasn’t enough to keep him fully occupied he was also making films and even found time to get married to Inga Ahlgren in June 1936. The ceremony at St. John’s Church in Bourne Hill was followed by a wedding breakfast on the theatre’s stage.

By the time Clements left the Intimate in 1940 the theatre had achieved a well-deserved reputation for staging first-class productions and audiences flocked to the venue from all over London. Because of the worsening war conditions, the theatre closed from September

It is amazing to see that from August 1941 until July 1952, when the theatre introduced a four week summer break, the management staged a different play every single week of the year, including Christmas week. For the regular actors in the company this meant appearing in a play six evenings a week plus two matinees, whilst rehearsing for next week’s play during the day. At the same time, they were trying to learn their lines for the play that would take to the stage in two weeks time. Hard work indeed!

Marlow employed, as the new director of productions, Ronald Kerr, whose workload was almost on a par with that of John Clements. For the next six years Kerr directed virtually every production at the theatre as well as playing the occasional leading role.

Although he left Palmers Green in 1947, Kerr returned to the Intimate in 1950 but his life was tragically cut short in March 1951 when he was arrested for ‘importuning male persons for an immoral purpose’. Summoned to appear before Marylebone Magistrates Court the following day, he never made that appointment, as he committed suicide in the early hours of that morning, just ten days after his last production at the theatre.

In 1946 the Intimate made television history.

The fledgling BBC television service at Alexandra Palace decided to present, for the very first time, a live transmission of a complete play from a theatre’s stage and the Intimate was chosen as the venue. The Palmers Green and Southgate Gazette

trumpeted the news on its front page: ‘World Premiere In History Of Television: Intimate Theatre Fame’. So successful was this venture that over the next few years fourteen plays were screened from the Intimate with the BBC taking over the car park for these transmissions and setting up three cameras in the circle to relay the plays to television viewers.

Many well-known actors made early career appearances at Palmers Green over the years.

Whilst still a student at RADA, Richard Attenborough made his professional debut at the Intimate in September 1941 in a production of Eugene O’Neill’s Ah, Wilderness and Roger Moore, later to find fame as James Bond, was fresh from army service when he appeared as juvenile lead in several productions in the late 1940s. Other wellknown names to tread the Intimate’s stage include Robert Eddison, June Whitfield, Nicholas Parsons, Arthur Lowe, Patrick MacNee (Steed in TV’s The Avengers), Michael Hordern, Anthony Hopkins, Bob Hoskins, Peter Barkworth, Patricia Hayes, Irene Handl, Bryan Forbes, James Hayter, Eric Portman, Mervyn Johns and Kenneth Williams. The rock icon David Bowie even appeared there for a week in early 1968 with Lindsay Kemp’s dance company.

When one looks at the British theatre scene of the ‘50s and ‘60s two playwrights stand out from the crowd – John Osborne and Harold Pinter - so it is intriguing to find Pinter, under his stage name David Baron, appearing at the Intimate as the second male lead in his contemporary’s most famous play Look Back

Amateur companies were invited to use the facilities and these societies together with occasional professional productions (A youthful Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson appeared in 1982 in a Cambridge Footlights revue) ensured the Intimate was open most weeks of the year. ‘One-nighter’ professional concerts were also booked featuring such artistes as Matt Monro, Frankie Howerd, Kenny Ball, June Bronhill, Cleo Laine, Frankie Vaughan, Hinge and Bracket, George Melly and Jack Warner and each Christmas a professional pantomime, with stars such as Tony Blackburn, Ruth Madoc, Bill Owen and Shirley Anne Field, filled the venue. The Intimate flourished until St. Monica’s Church decided to reclaim the venue as a community hall in 1988.

In Anger in March 1958. Aubrey Woods, who played Jimmy Porter in that production recalls that Pinter was finishing off his script for The Birthday Party at that time.

The Intimate also had a flourishing Playgoers Club, which held monthly meetings on Sunday afternoons featuring distinguished guests, including Sybil Thorndike, theatre historian W. MacQueen Pope, Marie Burke, Judy Campbell and Fenella Fielding. In October 1950, the Playgoers had a special treat when celebrated British actor Jack Hawkins chaired a meeting where the guest of honour was Hollywood film star Tyrone Power.

Changing tastes and the popularity of television saw a sharp decline in audiences in the 1960s. With Fred Marlow’s death in 1964, his sons gamely tried to keep the theatre going but by July 1968 they conceded defeat and a new company led by Howard Kent took control of the theatre. Kent promised local theatregoers fortnightly productions with star names, such as Richard Todd, Penelope Keith, Dickie Henderson and Gwen Watford, but sadly these failed to fill the theatre and by the end of 1969 the Intimate was no longer a fulltime professional playhouse. The theatre’s closure, however, was mercifully brief.

Many thought that this was the end of the road for the dear old Intimate but it was not to be. After a year or two of theatrical nonactivity some amateur productions returned to the venue and, although it is not used anything like its golden years, today, over 78 years after it first became a playhouse, audiences are still being entertained at the Intimate.

Summer Pudding They say that the Lakes Estate is the “quintessential Edwardian suburb” and a summer pudding is the quintessential Edwardian pudding. It always brings to mind my grandmother, who while a bit young to be truly Edwardian was of that age and this was one of her favourites. She claimed her secret was adding black grapes to the fruit and I agree - although there is no rule about which fruit to use – it is up to you. Her other secret was to use stale white bread, a few days old, as it absorbs the juices and hold together better. The pudding is best with fresh seasonal fruit although you can now buy summer fruits all year long so you can enjoy the taste of summer even in the deepest winter.

Ingredients • 1kg (2lb) of summer fruit • 5 oz (150 g) caster sugar • 7-8 slices stale white bread

1. Separate the redcurrants and blackcurrants from their stalks. Rinse all the fruits.

2. Place the fruits, apart from the raspberries, with the sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat and let them cook for about 3-5 minutes, only until the sugar has dissolved and the juices begin to run – don't overcook and so spoil the fresh flavour.

Now remove the fruit from the heat, and add the raspberries. Line the pudding basin with the slices of bread, overlapping them and sealing well by pressing the edges together. Fill in any gaps with small pieces of bread, so that no juice can get through when you add the fruit.

3. Pour the fruit and juice in (except for about two thirds of a cupful), then cover the pudding with bread. Place a small plate or saucer (one that will fit exactly inside the rim of the bowl) on top, and on top of that place a 3 lb or 4 lb (1.3 kg or 1.8 kg) weight, and leave in the fridge overnight.

4. Just before serving the pudding, turn it out on to a large serving dish and spoon the reserved juice all over, to soak any bits of bread that still look white. To serve, cut into wedges, with thick cream or ice cream.

Summer Pasta You know how it goes: the planning what veg is going to be planted followed by the tender care of the ‘babies’. Out into the patch with them, nurture and watch them start to shoot up.

Then that torturous wait for mature plants to start

bearing fruit, followed by a seemingly overnight mass produce overload. Ah, the seasonal GLUT. How I watched and waited as my courgettes began to flower, and then small yellow, white, green darlings began to elongate. About 20 of them, all at once!

So I decided to come up with some interesting ideas, other than my usual ‘grilled with everything’ approach. I have done some divine fritters, but I can’t stand the heat in the kitchen long enough to fry them at the moment; who could?!

Next came the idea of little ribbons on pasta…..simple, straight forward, nice and fast! I give you .... Summer Pasta.

This recipe can easily be adapted to your personal preferences. See it as a mere guide, really. This feeds 4, with about half pasta, half courgette in the finished result.

• 5 medium courgettes • knob of salted butter • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 1 sweet onion, chopped finely.

• lemon, zest and juice • fresh herbs (mint, basil, or parsley) • salt and pepper • grated Parmesan • pasta of choice (I used spaghetti) • Pop a large pot of salted water on to boil.

Wash, top and tail your courgettes. I have a bowl ready, so my ribbons will fall nicely in. Using a veg peeler, peel ribbons from the cougettes, turning it to a fresh side when you get down to the really seedy bit. Do all the sides and discard the middle bit. Repeat with all your courgettes. Set them to one side. Heat a large frying pan on medium heat, and pop in the

butter. Add in the onions and garlic. As they are becoming clear and yummy (NOT browned!) add in your ribbons, and turn the heat down a smidge. The idea is to sweat the courgettes, not brown them. This will keep them sweet and succulent. While they are softening, sort your lemon out. I just use a zester on the lemon, not bothering to chop it after. I like the bite you get when you occasionally chomp into a bit. Add the juice of half the lemon to the pan.

Meanwhile, your water should be boiling, so chuck in whatever pasta you fancy, following packet instructions.

You are ready to plate to when the pasta is ready. The courgettes should be limp, but not falling apart. Heap some pasta onto the plate, a sprinkle of Parmesan followed by the courgettes. Another sprinkling of Parmesan, salt and pepper, and a sprinkling of herbs, et voila!

Gorgeous with an ice cold beer, or glass of Sauvignon Blanc.

A military tattoo Suzanne Beard of Palmers Green Jewel in the North reflects on the First World War, which began in this month 100 years ago.

My father often says “That’s in the past now, move on”. Perhaps that is what my granddad thought too. I do remember though, that there was a tattoo on granddad’s forearm. I asked him about it once and he said it was because he had “been a naughty boy”. For years after, I thought tattoos must be a kind of punishment. I think now that perhaps he got it in Palestine. Or Egypt. Or, perhaps more likely, Chelmsford.

At the time of writing there is a campaign to switch the lights out on 4 August to mark one hundred years since the start of the First World War. I hope that it will be successful. I don’t think war should be glorified but 16 million people lost their lives and 20 million more were wounded. Those who survived saw Britain and our wider world change forever. What exactly should we remember, if not that?

As time moves on, of course, our perceptions of the past and our relationship with it change, but for as long as I can remember in my own life, the events of the First World War have been writ large in my understanding of our history. It’s not history in the Tudors-and-Stuarts sense, but much much closer, something that people I knew experienced at first hand.

My granddad, Reg Beard, was in Palestine and Egypt during the First World War. He’d been a traction engine driver, and in 1914 was one of the few people who could drive; he probably had a good understanding of how machines worked too, so though we aren’t sure when, he was sent to work on the Palestine railway.

We never knew much about what he experienced there: partly because we never sat him down to ask, but also because a lot of people returning from war simply didn’t talk about those things, though he did used to say that in Palestine you could pick oranges from the trees and they were the best he had ever tasted.

To see the impact of the war on Palmers Green, you need only visit the Garden of Remembrance, tucked away at the Powys Lane/Broomfield Avenue end of Broomfield Park. It’s a lovely, peaceful area with a pergola, formal gardens and a simple memorial to those lost in two world wars. 530 names are listed in the 1914-18 conflict, including many family names that are still familiar in the area today.

Some surnames are listed again and again. In the second world war this is often due to civilian casualties of bombing, but in the First World War it more likely tells the story of families hit by loss again and again as one by one their sons went to war, often willingly with best foot forward and even lying about their age to be able to take part.

In his book Akenfield, Ronald Blythe tells us that many a lad who went to war actually grew a few inches taller on war rations, such was the diet of the farm labouring poor.

The story of the coming of war to Palmers Green as depicted in local paper The Recorder makes surprising reading now, knowing what we do. In the issue at the end of July there is no sense of what lay ahead and stories are of alterations to the town hall, liberal fetes and scarlet fever scares. By October, the Recorder was publishing lists of people who had joined up and the new rifle range at Broomfield Park, which had only been established a few weeks before but had 800 members and was getting through over 1000 rounds of ammunition daily. The Recorder itself did not make it though the war. It stopped suddenly in 1917 There is one more sign of the changes World War One brought to Palmers Green. The expansion that

had begun only 10 or 15 years before came to a halt. Some roads were stopped in their tracks, and there are tales that some houses started before the war went though it without roofs. It’s one of the reasons why you will see different house styles in one street, and pre war motifs appearing in post WWI houses.

But this article is for my granddad, who survived the war with hat at a cocky angle, became the father of my uncle Reg and my dad Dennis - and chose to live his life in the present, and not tell the tale.

Music Review Lester Clayton presents... Luke Carey Lester Clayton is a Palmers Green based songwriter who has supported Ed Sheeran, Just Jack, Lemar and Pete Doherty amongst others, and runs various music nights across London which supports the development of local original music at the grass roots level. Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who was a part of The Palmers Green Shopping Carnival and The Southgate Festival. The sun came out, the rain stayed off, and everyone had 2 great days full of community spirit. We were lucky to have 2 stages of live music, one ran by myself and the other by the wonderful Dave Thomas who brought his St Harmonicas Blues Club to the streets of Palmers Green and Southgate. All of the artists on both stages were from the area, and put on a great show for their neighbours.

One of the artists who played on my stage on both days was Luke Carey, a 19 year old singer/songwriter who has played at my events a few times over the last couple of months. I have gotten to know him fairly well since we

first met at a local open mic night, and when he told me about his “100 gigs in 100 Days for The Alzheimer's Society” I thought it was something I should share with you all.

His idea is to use music as a medium to reach out to as many people as possible to raise money for a great cause. As I write he is on show 60 out of 100, which has seen him gig in various shows across London, to hundreds of people, and has seen interest from The Edinburgh Fringe Festival who want to feature him to help spread the word.

His Just Giving page has so far raised £1600 and has seen donations coming from all over the UK and America, and has been shared across the internet.

'The overwhelming support I received online instantly made it clear how many people are affected by Alzheimer's and how a charity like the Alzheimer's Society is greatly appreciated.

Although 100 gigs in 100 days won't find a cure, if it helps then I'm happy with what this has done' Musically Luke became inspired to pick up a guitar and write songs after seeing Ed Sheeran on SBTV, and after a chance meeting with him he has been determined to get out and make a name for himself. When I first met him the comparisons to Ed Sheeran were obvious, this happens with all young songwriters, but slowly, you begin to find yourself musically and create your own sound and image.

Luke's own material is moving away from the songwriter he most looks up to, and having seen gig 1/100 and seeing him on stage at the Palmers Green Shopping Carnival last month you can see how far he has come. His confidence is sky high and that shows in his performances.

The thing I like most about Luke is his attitude: he wants to gig, he turns up eager to get on stage and he gives everything he can in each show. He also knows he hasn't reached his

potential yet, he is very honest about where he is at musically, but he is growing and learning with every show he does and his willingness to learn is what will take him places.

When I asked him about The 100 gigs in 100 Days he said ''I've been passionate about music for years and I've always enjoyed gigging. In order to better myself as a live performer I found that doing as many shows as possible is the best way to hone my craft.

However I realised that just gigging to promote myself wasn't enough, I'm doing loads of gigs and being in front of lots of people and I thought I could do something positive through music and promote the great work of The Alzheimer Society to help and raise awareness for a good cause'' For someone so young to have this attitude is just what is missing from the music scene. Too many people are after fame and fortune, and the music industry can be a very tough place, but Luke Carey is coming at it from a completely different angle, he wants to perform, but at the same time he wants to make a difference.

John talks about his development as a musician and how when he moved to Palmers Green he was coopted onto the Hazelwood Pantomime. He also traces how the same group of musicians, went on to start playing at the Waiting Room Café and then to St Harmonicas, Friday nights and some Sunday evenings at the St Monica’s social club. North London Hospice North London Hospice has been caring for the people of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey since 1984, providing specialist end-of-life care to people living with a terminal illness. At present we treat 1400 patients a year.

Our specially trained multi-professional teams provide emotional, practical and spiritual support to patients as well as their families, friends and carers.

We also work extensively within the wider community to improve people’s quality of life. This ranges from our day services, where patients come to have a day out and enjoy a wide variety of activities and therapies, to providing support in our patients’ homes.

As a registered charity North London Hospice is not directly part of the NHS. Although we receive some government funding, we rely on donations and legacies to meet the cost of providing three

Pinkham Way Alliance The Pinkham Way Alliance is a community campaign group which came together in early 2011 when a small number of people living in the vicinity of an ecologically valuable green space at a site just south of the A406 and to the north of Muswell Hill, known as Pinkham Way, began to realise the scale of The North London Waste Authority (NLWA) proposals to build a 300,000 tones per annum Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) waste plant on that land, and decided to oppose these plans.

We now have well over 3000 supporters and rising. Our membership is drawn largely from the areas that the plant will most seriously effect - Barnet, Enfield and Haringey.

As our understanding grows so we come to realise that the impact of the plans goes far beyond the despoiling of a locally important site for nature conservation. It has become a much wider fight and one where with each day we increasingly believe we have it right and the NLWA have it badly wrong.

The campaign is entirely reliant on the help of volunteers. Even if you don't have much time to spare, you can still make a difference. Simply by encouraging your neighbours to sign up to our newsletter, or by offering to leaflet your street, your contribution will really count.

I have recently had a car accident and when I explained the circumstances giving rise to the accident, I was informed that my claim is likely to result in a split liability award. Can you please explain what this means?

When you are involved in a road traffic accident you need to consider the circumstances of the accident to establish who was at fault (i.e. who caused the accident to happen).

In many cases it will be relatively straight forward to establish and one party will be liable. However, if one party is not clearly responsible for the accident, it will be necessary to consider split liability.

If, for example, you reversed out of a parking space while another car was also reversing out of a parking space and both vehicles collide. It is likely that liability will be

equally apportioned between the two parties, as neither party was paying adequate attention to their surroundings.

Another example is if you saw the other party reversing and stopped your vehicle but the other party did not see you and continued to reverse into your vehicle. Although you would consider the other party at fault for the accident, if there is no independently verifiable evidence to show that your vehicle was stationary at the moment of the collision, liability may still be apportioned between the two parties.

The compensation recovered in relation to split liability claims depends on the apportionment of blame. So if your responsibility for the accident is determined at 25%, you would be entitled to recover 75% of the compensation from the other party.

Autumn is traditionally a time when there are lots of arts courses on offer at local colleges. But instead of having to commit to a long course there is an alternative.

This month’s artist: GILLIAN BEAGLEY Tuesday 12 August – Monday 8 September Monday – Friday: 9am – 7pm, Saturday: 9.30am – 5pm I've lived in the area for a while and walked many times in our local green spaces and seen them evolve. For the last few years I've been painting these places. There are often moments where the light or the weather inspire me to see my surroundings as something different and to notice how the same scene looks through each month of the year.

I've worked in three different areas. The one I'm currently exhibiting is Parkside Farm in Enfield. I spent last year walking around it each month and taking photos, seeing it in a different way from when it's open to the public as a pick-your-own farm, and writing my impressions down before coming back to the studio and making the pictures. I use many fine layers and washes to build up the final piece, using acrylic paint.

I've always painted, more seriously in the last eight to ten years, selling my work in and around London, including most recently at Spitalfields Art Market and Forty Hall. For three years I've taken part in the Open Studio Art Trail and I’m a member of the Creative Exchange.
