Paying tribute to the pioneer Catholic missionaries

Bishop Ng greeting the people BARAM — The people of Kpg Kuala Tutoh in Miri Diocese celebrated the 106th anniversary of the establishment of the Catholic mission with a tribute to the pioneering Mill Hill Missionaries who came to plant the seeds of the Good News a century ago.

Head of Miri Diocese Bishop Richard Ng paid tribute to the pioneer missionaries who had given their life to sow the seeds of the Gospel in this vast region.

“We are grateful to God for these century of blessings He had given to us. We remember those pioneer missionaries who have led us to Jesus Christ,” he said at the Mass on 3 December at the 72-door longhouse.

Guests and longhouse folks enjoying the performance These pioneering Mill Hill missionaries came to set up the first missions in Marudi village and then Kpg Kuala Tutoh in what is now part of the Miri Diocese.

They landed in northern Sarawak but had no money, no material resources and no knowledge of the local native languages. All they had was their faith in God, the love of Jesus Christ in their hearts and the wisdom of the Holy Spirit to guide and lead them, said Monsignor Francis Kulleh.

Msgr Kulleh is one of the pioneer batch of local Sarawakian priests to have served alongside with the European and American Mill Hill missionaries.

The pioneer missionaries faced enormous physical,

logistics and financial constraints, he said.

“Fr Henry Jansen was the very first to set foot here. He first stopped in Marudi, then Kpg Kuala Tutoh, then to my longhouse Long Banyok and then all the way upriver to Long San and Lio Mato in the upper reaches of Baram,” Msgr Kulleh recounted.

“Armed with their faith, they learned the native languages and converted many local natives,” he said.

“I remember serving with the Mill Hills missionaries from Europe and America. To earn some money we had to tap rubber trees and sell the latex,” said the monsignor who was ordained a priest 39 years ago.

Bishop Ng said in his homily that since the first Catholic was baptised here a century ago, the locals must continue to sustain and grow their faith.

“Today we face many problems and challenges in society that threaten to weaken our faith,” he said. He prayed that one day there would be a local native who would answer the call to the priesthood or religious life.

“We thank God for the century of faith and blessings and we pray for another

100 years and more of his blessings,” said the Bishop.

He also called on the young to remember their roots, the faith, culture and their family background and pass them on to the future generations.

The prelate thanked the organisers for their efforts to organise the centenary celebration. He gave them his Christmas message of hope and peace.

The Advent season is a time to reflect on our life and prepare ourselves for the second coming of Christ, he added. As long as we are sincere in our life to serve God and our fellow being we will be ready to face God anytime, he told the organisers.

INSTALLATION OF ALTAR SERVERS … About 20 altar servers were officially installed by the parish priest, Fr Patrick Heng during the Morning Mass on Sunday, 19 November at Holy Trinity Church, Kenyalang. Currently, Holy Trinity parish has 57 altar servers who serve the three weekend Masses. Eight of the servers are girls.

The passing of Fr Wim Bos NETHERLANDS — Fr Wim Bos MHM passed away on 17 November.

The whole of his long missionary life in Sarawak, Fr Wim worked both in remote and up-river missions as well as in town. While there, he immersed himself in the Iban culture and language.

The list of places where he served starts in Kanowit after his ordination. A year later he was posted to Song, and four years later, in 1962, to Binatang, where he stayed for two years.

Then he returned to work in Song for six years. In 1970 he was appointed to work in Julau.

Three years later he went back to Kanowit where he worked until 1988. In that year

In 1999 he was transferred to the up-river mission of Julau, where he served for three years,

after which he returned to Sibu.

This was to be the place where he continued to serve until his retirement to ‘Missiehuis Vrijland’, in Oosterbeek, The Netherlands, in August 2011.

Needs of the rural community catered for

OVERWHELMING ... Many still in need of welfare aid BUNAN — On Saturday, 25 November, about 500 people turned up to register for welfare aid from the government at the Parish House of St Jude’s Parish, Bunan Gega.

The exercise to register for welfare aid was organised by Catholic Welfare Services with the assistance of the parish priest, Fr Berchmans Rayar CMF. The aim was to help rural folks to obtain the entitlement for welfare assistance from the government. Some of them have not been well informed on the application procedures.

The number of people who turned up to register exceeded the number expected. That goes to prove that indeed, many in the rural areas are in need of welfare aid.

Four welfare officers from the Serian Welfare Department and CWS Samaritans were on hand to assist with the registration.

CWS will continue to assist rural parishes in getting the welfare officers to help parishioners to apply for welfare aid at their respective parishes.

A talk on Billings method in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii — Dr Lek-Lim Chan from the Archdiocese of Kuching spoke to 30 participants at the parish hall of the Church of Our Lady of Good Council Church, Pearl City, Hawaii on Tuesday, 14 November. The topic was “Helping Infertility & Monitoring Health with Billings Ovulation Method®”.

Pearson Foundation, Diocesan Pro-life leader Paulette Vernay, and some prolife activists including Susan Duffy and Teresa Fredericks were instrumental in arranging this gathering. Several Catholic churches, the local Catholic newspaper, some colleges and a hospital advertised the event.

St Jude congregation celebrates patron saint day MUKAH — The congregation of St Jude Thaddeus Chapel, Kpg Petanak celebrated its patron saint day on Sunday, 29 October.

The celebration commenced with a Mass presided over by the rector of St Peter & St Paul Parish, Fr Joseph Sebastian followed by a fellowship dinner in front of the chapel.

Fr Joseph and the new chapel committee members cut the anniversary cake to mark the occasion.

The function continued with the presentation of prizes to the winners who participated in the various games, including lucky draws organised for the event.

Vatican continues annual Christmas raffle for charity VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis’ raffle to benefit those in need will give even more people a chance to win a gift once owned by the Pope.

Announcing the fifth annual raffle on 30 November, the Vatican said tickets would be available for purchase online and in several areas accessible to the public, such as the Vatican Museums’ bookshop and the Vatican post office or pharmacy.

Tickets also will be sold at the Paul VI audience hall to those attending the 16 December Christmas charity concert.

“In this way, people will have an opportunity to make a double gesture of charity,” said a statement from the Vatican City State governor’s office.

For 10 euros – about RM50 – ticket buyers are eligible to win one of several items originally given as gifts to Pope Francis.

“The Pope – as he has done every year – has personally donated all the prizes,” the governor’s office said.

The proceeds of the annual raffle go directly to charitable causes chosen by the Pope, the Vatican said. Unlike

previous years, the Vatican did not announce any specific beneficiaries of the 2017 raffle.

Last year’s raffle benefited the homeless and victims of the earthquake that struck central Italy on 24 August 2016.

Buddhists, Christians must reclaim values that lead to peace, Pope says

YANGON, Myanmar — Christians and Buddhists are called by faith to overcome evil with goodness and violence with peace, Pope Francis said during a meeting with leaders of Myanmar's Buddhist community.

Quoting St Francis of Assisi and Buddha, the Pope insisted that in a land where the powerfully bonded pairing of religion and ethnicity have been used to prolong conflict, it was time for religious leaders to reclaim the greatest values and virtues of their faith traditions.

Pope Francis met 29 November with members of the State Sangha Maha Nayaka Committee, a governmentappointed group of senior Buddhist monks who oversee some 500,000 monks and novices in Myanmar, where close to 90 percent of the population follows Buddhism.

One of the strongest antiMuslim and anti-Rohingya currents of Myanmar society is led by Buddhist nationalists.

The meeting was hosted by the Buddhists at the Kaba Aye Pagoda and Centre.

As is customary, Pope Francis took off his shoes before entering the hall and walked in his black socks to his place. The Buddhist committee members sat directly opposite Pope Francis and members of his entourage across a plush, bright blue rug.

The challenge of the Buddhist monks and of the Catholic clergy, the Pope said, is to help their people see that patience, tolerance and respect for life are values essential to every relationship, whether with people of the same family or ethnic group or with fellow residents of a nation.

“May that wisdom continue to inspire every effort to foster patience and understanding and to heal the wounds of conflict that, through the years, have divided people of different cultures, ethnicities and religious convictions,” he said.

The Pope did not use the word “Rohingya”, whom the Myanmar government does not recognise as a separate ethnic group, but he insisted the meeting was an occasion “to affirm a commitment to peace, respect for human dignity and justice for every man and woman”.

Faith, he said, not only should lead adherents to an experience of “the transcendent”, but also should help them see "their interconnectedness with all people”.

As he had earlier in the trip, the Pope again defined as an example of “ideological colonisation” the idea that differences are a threat to peaceful coexistence.

“The unity we share and celebrate is born of diversity,” he said. Unity in the church and in a nation “values people’s differences as a source of mutual enrichment and growth. It invites people to come together in a culture of encounter and solidarity”.

As Myanmar continues its transition to democratic rule and tries to deal with the challenges of development and full equality for all its ethnic groups, Pope Francis told the bishops to make sure their voices are heard, “particularly by insisting on respect for the dignity and rights of all, especially the poorest and most vulnerable”. — CNS

Young Catholics reinvigorated by meeting with Pope Francis in Yangon YANGON — Young people have emerged “reinvigorated, stronger in their faith” after meeting with Pope Francis, said Jiosep Porlwin, a 29-year-old who led a group of young people from Taunggy, the capital of the eastern state of Shan, who took part in the morning’s Mass that ended the Pope’s historic visit to Myanmar on 30 November.

Jiosep noted that “Pope Francis’s presence in the country has given us fantastic moments, which we will never forget.

Yesterday’s Mass at Kyaikkasan Grounds brought together all ethnic groups. For us it was a very significant moment. I am happy the Pope found time to dedicate to us young people as well. I still can’t believe it!”

More than six thousand people were present at the Mass that morning at St Mary’s

Cathedral. Only 1,200 youths were allowed into the church.

They had received their assigned place days ago.

Outside, more than 2,000 were in the garden of the compound and followed the Mass on the large screens set up by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM).

Pope Francis: Harmony must begin within church

Meeting with priests, religious and seminarians at the Church of the Holy Rosary DHAKA, Bangladesh — Devoting his last day in Bangladesh to the nation’s tiny Catholic community, Pope Francis told clergy and religious that there was no way they could promote interreligious harmony in the country if their communities were marked by gossip, division and bitterness.

“There are many enemies of harmony,” the Pope told priests, religious, seminarians and bishops 2 December. One of the deadliest, and most common, enemies is gossip.

“You might want to criticise the Holy Father for being repetitive, but this is important to me,” he told the church workers gathered in Dhaka’s Holy Rosary Church.

Speaking badly of someone behind his or her back creates distrust, he said.

“It’s a kind of terrorism,” destroying everything.

When the temptation to gossip arises, the Pope said, “bite your tongue.

You might harm your tongue, but you won’t harm your brother or sister.”

Pope Francis began the day by visiting a home run by the Missionaries of Charity in Dhaka. Accompanied by the sari-clad superior, he went from bed to bed in the wards for seriously ill adults and children.

Taken by either hand by two little girls in pink and white tulle dresses, Pope Francis was led to the nearby Church of the Holy Rosary for the meeting with hundreds of priests, religious and seminarians from throughout the country.

Archbishop Moses M. Costa of Chattagong, president of the bishops’ commission for clergy and religious life, told the Pope that the country’s Catholics make up less than 1 percent of the population. The 372 priests and more than 1,250 women religious are “satisfactory” for serving the Catholic community, the archbishop said.

But, he said, “compared to the huge population of the country, the number of priests and nuns is negligible.”

Pope Francis listened to the testimonies of several priests and a sister.

Then he heard from Holy Cross Brother Lawrence Dias, who has been a religious for 63 years. Currently he serves as a hermit at Mariam Ashram, Bangladesh’s national Marian shrine. His life is devoted to prayer.

“Many priests and religious and also laypeople have come to the ashram to quench their spiritual thirst,” he told the Pope. “I am serving as the guru.”

Instead of waiting for the elderly brother to go up to him, as the others had

done, Pope Francis rushed to Brother Dias’ place and embraced him.

Joining the pope and the Bangladeshi priests and sisters was Oblate Father Andrew Small, US director of the Pontifical Mission Societies. The U.S. arm of the Catholic mission support agency provided more than $1.15 million in aid to the church in Bangladesh in 2017.

Ignoring his prepared text for the gathering, Pope Francis spoke in Spanish and had his words translated into English by an aide.

“I prepared a speech of eight pages for you,” he said, evoking laughter and applause. But, he said, he didn’t want them to be bored.

First, he said, the church workers always must remember that one’s vocation is a seed that “does not belong to you or to me. It is God’s. And it is God who provides for its growth.”

With tenderness and prayer, each person is called to water the seed and be attentive as possible to providing all it needs to grow.

“If there is no such tenderness, the plant is very small, it doesn’t grow and it will dry out,” he said. But it also is true that sometimes “the enemy comes and sows another kind of seed and there is

“In this garden of the kingdom of God,” he said, “there isn’t just one plant growing; there are thousands, all of us, and community life is not easy. Human defects, our limitations, threaten community life and they threaten peace.

But if the Catholic community itself is not marked by harmony, he said, there is no way it can contribute authentically to strengthening harmony among the many religions present in Bangladesh.

The other essential characteristic is joy, Pope Francis told them. “I assure you when you meet a priest, religious, seminarian or bishop who is really unhappy, has a sad face, you want to ask, ‘What did you have for breakfast, vinegar?’”

On the other hand, he said, “I feel great tenderness when I meet elderly priests or nuns who have lived a happy life, who are full of joy and peace.”

Bangladesh’s downtrodden buoyed by papal visit DHAKA — Behind expensive high-rise apartments in central Dhaka, Bangladeshi Rahima Begum lives in a shantytown with her husband and two sons.

An eight-foot by six-foot rented room has since 2012 been their home in the Bangla Motor district of the capital, only a few kilometers from venues for the visit of Pope Francis from 30 November - 2 December.

Rahima hopes the Pope’s presence will bring increased focus on the miserable plight of people such as herself.

However, she has no choice other than to put up with a sewer flowing near her shanty that brings an appalling stench as well as the risk of disease.

About 2,000 people live on less than an acre of land, all of them poor Muslims like Rahima.

Rahima’s family lost their home in the Madaripur district of south-central Bangladesh due to devastating river erosion.

Rahima does not know a great deal about the pontiff, but has learned that he criticised poor working conditions in

“Our political leaders and the government always promise development, but they don’t do anything for us,” Rahima said.

In recent decades, the economy of Bangladesh has grown, but about a quarter of the country’s 160 million people still live below the poverty threshold.

According to the World Bank, about

40 percent of 15 million people in Dhaka are slum dwellers.

Muslim-majority Bangladesh has long been considered a model of religious harmony and pluralism, but in recent times there has been a rise in Islamic militant violence.

Probir Chowdhury is a Hindu leader from Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria district, where Islamist mobs attacked Hindu

communities in October last year.

Chowdhury hopes Pope Francis will invigorate Bangladesh by promoting harmony and peace.

“Pope Francis is a supreme spiritual leader and we are honoured to have him here,” Chowdhury said.

About 3 million people of Bangladesh’s 160 million population belong to about 45 ethnic minority groups, who are mostly non-Muslims such as Buddhists, Hindus and Christians.

These communities have all faced various forms of violence from politically and numerically dominant Muslims, mostly over land and political issues.

Ripon Albinus Lakra, 25, an Oraon indigenous Catholic from northern Dinajpur district, is optimistic about Pope Francis’ visit.

“Pope Francis is a great lover of humanity and marginalised communities are very close to his heart,” Lakra, director of a church-run student hostel told ucanews.com.

Is Jesus really God?

by Deacon Dr Sherman Kuek, OFS From the year 313 AD onwards, Christianity became more or less the “official” religion of the Roman Empire, under the emperorship of Constantine, who must have been decidedly persuaded by his mother the Empress Helena. Although Constantine himself never truly became Christian, he decided that he could make good use of the Christian religion in order to unite his ever-expanding empire.

But yet, this very instrument which Constantine deemed profitable for the unity of his political empire was also being threatened by the various views about Jesus Christ, especially view about his human and divine natures. Constantine could not afford to allow these differing views to be left unaddressed, as disunity of theology in the Church meant also the threat of tearing his political empire asunder.

This was when, in effort to gets her act together, the Holy Catholic Church began to formulate official statements about her understanding of Jesus Christ. These statements were formulated in Sacred Councils of bishops who met in appointed venues over periods of times to resolve rife disagreements over the identity of Jesus.

5. An Early Church Council confirmed the divinity of Jesus So being instructed by the Emperor Carsar Flavius Constantine, the Council of Nicea convened in 325 AD. This was a place located in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), east of Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul). At this Sacred Council, Constantine demanded that the bishops defined once and for all the nature of Jesus Christ for all of the Christian religion in order that there would no longer be confusion and contention within the Church. In response, the Council of Nicea resoundingly asserted that Jesus was divine and eternal, and that his relationship with the Father was “of one substance” (homoousios). It was also this Council that recognised the Holy Trinity – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – as three co-equal and co-eternal Persons.

In this Council, a priest named Arius, who was held responsible for propagating an alternative interpretation about Jesus, presented an argument that Jesus was not an eternal being and that he was actually created by the Father. Arius’ teaching had become so widespread that it had by then provoked a schism in the Church. In Arius’ view, Jesus could not be of the Father’s being or essence, or else that essence would otherwise have been “divisible” or “communicable” such that the Father’s essence was no longer unique. This meant, therefore, that Jesus could exist only by the Father’s will, just as it was with all other creatures. According to Arius, Jesus did have a special relationship with the Father, but not a relationship of “essence” (i.e. not an “ontological” one, to use a more technical theological term). Unlike the Father who had been in existence in all eternity, there was a time when Jesus did not exist, he said.

Arius’ argument against the divinity of Jesus was shredded to bits by the

overwhelming view of the Church Fathers present at that Council in Nicea.

Bishops such as Alexander, aided by the famous Saint Athanasius (who was at that time only a humble deacon in that Council), argued hard and fiercely to defend the truth about Jesus Christ, that he was eternal just like the Father was.

At the prodding of the Emperor, the Holy Council made a decision by majority vote defining the Church’s understanding of Jesus. What followed was a statement of doctrine known today as the “Nicene Creed”. This creed was decidedly anti-Arian. It asserted that the Son was “true God from true God”. Although confessing the Son to be begotten, the creed added the words “from the Father” and “not made”.

Council of Nicea, 325 AD And even more than that, Jesus was “consubstantial (homoousios) with the Father”.

The Council also declared, “But those who say, ‘There was a time when he [the Son] did not exist,’ and ‘Before he was born, he did not exist,’ and ‘Because he was made from non-existing matter, he is either of another substance or essence,’ and those who call ‘God the Son of God changeable and mutable,’ these the Catholic Church anathematises.” (Appendix to the Creed of Nicaea [AD 325]) Arius and his followers who refused to change their minds were banished from the Church, but only for a short season. The Council managed to condemn Arianism, but it failed to kill the heresy. Upon the death of the Emperor Constantine, his son Constantius took over the Eastern Roman Empire and ruled as Constantius II. Unfortunately, Constantius II favoured the Arian heresy and its supporters. Under his patronage, the Arians gained stronghold over the Church in the Eastern Roman Empire.

By now, the deacon Athanasius had succeeded Alexander as bishop, and he refused to accept the resurgence of the Arian heresy. He quickly established himself as an archenemy of Arianism by writing a remarkable body of work against this heresy, clarifying the Church’s doctrine on the relationship of the Father and the Son. In standing in contradiction to the political and religious order of the day in defence of the truth, Athanasius refused to yield. For this, he suffered much. But nothing could shake him from holding fast to the creed that had been formulated at the Council of Nicea. When Athanasius died in 373 AD, on his tombstone was inscribed: Athanasius Contra Mundum (“Athanasius against the World”). By divine design, the accuracy of what had been decided at the Council of Nicea would later on be decisively reaffirmed at another council in Constantinople in 381 AD. (It must be noted, lest some people misunderstand, that the doctrine of Jesus’ divinity was not invented at the Councils. It is usually in the face of ideas challenging what the Church has already recognised to be true that more formal formulations emerge to clarify what is believed.)

The ones who won’t be home for the holidays

by Laura Kelly Fanucci This season sparkles with joy. We open our homes to family and friends, greeting each other at wreath-decked doors under twinkling lights.

But a small moment often catches in our throat. We set one less place for Thanksgiving dinner. Or we cross a name off this year’s Christmas list.

Wherever we gather around holiday tables this year, there will be holes left by those who aren’t there. Relatives who have died. Loved ones lost to addiction. Babies who never got to be held. Families divided by divorce.

Gaping holes left by grief.

Other changes are temporary but still weigh heavy on the heart. The kid not coming back from college this year.

The family members deployed. The friends on the other side of the globe.

Holidays often set this truth in stark relief: Our families – and our lives – don’t always look the way we expected or planned.

I learned – after infertility and miscarriage and child loss – that smiling faces on Christmas cards don’t tell the whole story. Maybe the parents lost so many babies before they finally got to bring one home. Maybe they never wanted a huge brood, but the kids kept coming. Maybe their marriage is crumbling and no one knows.

Human nature is quick to judge what we see on the surface, quick to idealise

Even amid the dreams that have died and the shadows of what might have been, we can still show up and choose joy. others’ lives. But the truth runs deeper.

I look at my own family, and I ache for my children who aren’t here and my brother who’s long gone. I want to set three more places at our table, even as I delight in those around me.

But here’s a truth worth celebrating in a season of wonder: We keep going.

Suffering and grief are met by an even stronger force: that God made human hearts resilient. We do not have to

despair when our reality does not match our hopes or others’ expectations. We can still embrace the good work of living out our callings.

Even amid the dreams that have died and the shadows of what might have been, we can still show up and choose joy.

Think about the holiest of families.

Mary and Joseph could never have imagined how parenthood would begin

for them.

But both embraced the life that God set before them, even with its suffering and heartache. They must have known great joy, too. Holiness was caught up in all of it.

So do not fear this year if your heart aches for the ones who aren’t here. You are not alone.

In a month that starts with All Saints and All Souls and ends in Thanksgiving, we can be grateful that our struggles are part of a greater mystery: The communion of saints in which the living and the dead are held together in the love of God. Together we are only – but always – joined in this sacred wholeness: “We believe in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one church” (Pope Paul VI, “Credo of the People of God,” in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, No. 962).

Look around the table at those here to celebrate with you. Remember those who are gone. When you find yourself holding them together – the living and the dead, the lost and the found – then you enter more deeply into this holy mystery.

A tale of two popes

by Greg Erlandson There’s a quote attributed, probably falsely, to Mark Twain that observes, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”

I suppose it is a sign that I’m getting older, because I’m starting to hear the rhymes in a lot of the current debates in the church about papal leadership.

Almost 40 years ago, a Polish pope, a man from a far country, came to Rome with a new vigour and a new attitude. He not only told us not to be afraid, he energised us with his vitality and his willingness to take on big challenges facing the church. I was one of many attracted to his self-assured vision of what some called a “Catholic restoration.”

He challenged the politically powerful in the East and helped to topple governments. He shook his finger at political clerics he judged disobedient.

He was not afraid to discipline theologians. He appointed new bishops and called synods to address the major issues of the day, invariably pleasing some and outraging others.

Not everyone embraced him. Some said he was too Polish, too much a product of the church-state conflicts of his communist homeland, with an insularity that was insensitive to Western democracies. Others said he was busy appointing bishops in his own image, and they worried that the church would be irreversibly locked into what they saw as an anti-modern agenda.

Some claimed he had abandoned the Second Vatican Council, at least as they understood it. When critics challenged him in public forums, his defenders fought back. They talked about papal authority and the deference all Catholics owed the supreme pontiff and suggested his critics were disloyal and dissenters.

Fast-forward a few decades, and I start to hear the rhyme. We have another pope from a far country, Argentina. He was not

a young man when he was elected, but he riveted the world with his humility, with his willingness to eschew the trappings of the office, to reach out to the poor, the disfigured, the marginalised.

He emphasises the joy of the Christian life, and railed against sourpuss Pharisees.

His use of concrete images to describe a pastoral reality has been electrifying: the shepherd who smells like the sheep, the church as field hospital.

People are drawn to his emphasis on joy and mercy, but his emphasis on pastoral concerns, while pleasing to some, worries others. He has challenged powerful forces in the church by reorganising the Vatican, or trying to, and by appointing new bishops who are often in his mould.

He has called the synods to talk about the crisis of the family and about youth.

He also has challenged the politically powerful. He has shaken his finger at Catholics who seem more interested in political influence than in helping those on the periphery.

Not everyone has embraced him.

Some say he doesn’t understand the United States, that he has a Latin American bias. Others worry that he is embracing the heresies of modernity, or undermining doctrinal teaching. His defenders fight back, asking that there be more deference to papal authority, that he has the right to pursue his vision of a truly Vatican II church, and that those who attack him in public forums are disloyal and even dissenters.

Catholicism has never been without theological debate, and these debates rarely spare even popes. Those quick to criticise papal authority and decisions 30 years ago have changed places with those quick to criticise now. The rhyme may not be perfect, but a bit of humility would seem to be in order lest our own hypocrisy give greater scandal than that which we claim to protest. — CNS

A busy Catholic’s guide to Advent: 10 tips for observing the season

by Mike Jordan Laskey Advent is a criminally underrated liturgical season. It gets swallowed up in the pre-Christmas rush, and it’s shorter and less intense than Lent, but it’s a beautiful, quiet period worth marking.

Beyond the obvious “get to Mass on all the Advent Sundays and every Sunday” exhortation, here are 10 simple tips for your Advent observation, from one busy person to another.

1. Read some sort of short, daily devotion.

Just a few pages a day, max. There are plenty of great options to consider (e.g. the Little Blue Book, Daybreaks from Liguori Press, and Scripture scholar Walter Brueggemann’s new devotional Celebrating Abundance).

2. Get some quiet time.

Advent the liturgical season is quiet and dark, as we await the in-breaking of Christ’s light at Christmas. Advent the shopping and party season is loud and glaringly bright. Seek out some quiet time separate from bedtime.

Maybe try repeating the prayer, “Come, Lord Jesus” to yourself, slowly as you breathe in and out with your eyes closed. You can do this in your office or kitchen. And in this spirit …

3. It’s OK to say no.

You don’t have to go to every party you’re invited to or schlep to the mall the Saturday before Christmas or watch the endless loop of wintry car commercials. As a mentor of mine likes

to say, “’No’ is a complete sentence”.

Of course, there are certain obligations this time of the year — especially for parents of young kids, I’m learning — that you just can’t say “no” to. So I need to practise discerning which activities are essential and which can be skipped.

4. Don’t forget the Advent music.

I’m not here to play liturgical police and tell you to shelve the Christmas music until sunset on 24 December.

However, there are plenty of great Advent hymns and songs to work into your rotation. Some of my favourites: Sufjan Stevens’ version of “O Come, O Come Emmanuel;” Steve Angrisano’s modern update of that same classic; composer JJ Wright’s brilliant jazz / classical album “O Emmanuel;” the French hymn, “O Come Divine Messiah;” and Dan Schutte’s “Christ Circle Round Us.”

7. Got a young kid or two? Add a Christmas book to bedtime reading list.

Speaking of the domestic church: If you have kids you read to at night, add a nativity book for children to your stack.

We have already started reading some Christmas stories to our 2-year-old, and it’s amazing how she is beginning to recognise the characters of the story so fast. I’m reminded how vivid and aweinspiring the nativity story is.

5. Decorate, even a little.

We Catholics are sacramental people: Smells, bells, stained glass, beautiful music, bread and wine. God can visit through our sensory experiences. So put out a nativity set. Get some greenery or fake greenery up somewhere. And, at the very least …

8. Support an organisation that works for social justice.

“Giving Tuesday” has come and gone, but the Advent and Christmas seasons are better inspirations for supporting charitable organisations anyway. As the magi brought whatever they had to give the newborn king, our own gifts to organisations that further the building of the kingdom of God on Earth is one way to celebrate their legacy. In addition to incredible, independent agencies all over the country, your own local Catholic Charities agency or Catholic Relief Services (international assistance) are reliably great nonprofits.

6. Light an Advent wreath.

Say a short prayer when you light it each Sunday. The family and home are what the Vatican II document Lumen Gentium calls the “domestic church,” and an Advent wreath tradition is simple, lovely way to strengthen that smallest,

Someone I know who’s familiar with Catholic internet searches tells me “act of contrition” is one of the most popular Catholic Google search terms every Advent and Lent. This isn’t all

that surprising, as a lot of parishes host Sacrament of Reconciliation services during both seasons. If Advent is all about preparing, there’s no better way to prepare your heart and spirit.

10. Reflect on the “three comings of the Lord.”

St. Bernard of Clairvaux described these three comings as the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, the coming of Jesus into our lives in the present time, and Christ’s final coming in glory on the last day. In Advent, we wait and prepare for all three. Most Advents, I spend about 95 percent of my prayer and reflection and energy focused on the first coming only — with the manger, the shepherds, the angels, the baby. I’m missing those second and third arrivals of Jesus. I hope I’ll stick to at least some of these suggestions I’ve outlined here, and that they’ll help me focus on the Advent story that goes beyond Bethlehem.

Before you write these ideas down on a checklist, one disclaimer: I think all 10 of these practices are good ideas, but this list not full of silver bullets that will make this Advent “the best Advent ever” for you. Faith and joy and peace are unearned gifts only God can give. Through spiritual discipline, we can only put ourselves in a posture of humility and gratitude before the Lord, invite the Spirit into our lives, and be ready to respond.

Father Patrick Peyton and road to sainthood

A friend told me recently that the cause of Father Patrick Peyton had been sent to the Vatican for sainthood. Do you know how it stands and when he might be declared a saint? (I hope and pray that it will be in my lifetime.) Also, what are the stages for someone to be declared a saint?

Father Patrick Peyton’s cause for canonisation rests right now with the Vatican’s Congregation for Saints’ Causes. In April 2015, the “positio,” or official position paper, was presented formally to that congregation. That document, a 1,300-page report that studied his life and ministry for signs of heroic virtue and sanctity, had been prepared over four years, gathering testimonies from 35 different dioceses around the world.

The congregation is now in the process of reviewing that documentation.

Following a favourable review, the cause would then be presented to the Holy Father and, with the pontiff’s approval, Fr Peyton would be declared “Venerable”. Then, evidence of miracles attributed to his intercession would be studied and subjected to rigorous medical scrutiny; one documented miracle would be needed for beatification and another one for canonisation.

Fr Peyton, hailed throughout the world as the “Rosary Priest”, died in 1992 at age 83. He promoted family prayer and coined the oft-heard slogan, “The family that prays together stays together”. He organised rosary crusades in 40 nations that drew 28 million people and was a pioneer in using modern media to advance religious values, producing 600 radio and television programmes using Hollywood stars and other celebrities.

There is no way to forecast exactly when his canonisation might take place, but I, too, would feel a personal thrill in witnessing it. I was honored when Fr Peyton invited me to write the foreword for one of his final books; and once, when he was then in his late 70s and in failing health, I ran into him in Rome.

He asked about my mother, whom he had known when he first began the Family Rosary organisation in the 1940s. I told him that she was, in fact, visiting me that very week in Rome. Though I pleaded with him not to, he insisted on climbing the steep set of stairs to my apartment to see my mother and give her a blessing. I will always remember “Father Pat” not only as a very holy man, but a kind man as well.

Christmas 2017

y this month of December, we can actually feel that Christmas is in the air.

In early November when I visited shopping complexes, I saw that Christmas, soft-toys, deco and trees were already on sale. By now there would be Santa Clause, Christmas trees, reindeer, snowman, and “snowing” in the complexes. We are thankful that world celebrates Christmas with us too.

However, the first Christmas 2000 years ago was not that romantic. It would have been very cold in the semi-desert night of Bethlehem. There was no room or bed for Jesus. But we know he was well received into the warm arms and loving hearts

by Joseph and Mary, welcomed by the poor shepherds (Lk 2:1-20) and three kings from the east (Mt 2:1-12).

“By the Holy Spirit, Jesus was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man” On that first Christmas night in Bethlehem, God became human and lived among us. Every Sunday, in our Creed, we profess that he “was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man”. In Latin “carne” translates to mean “flesh.” Thus through “incarnation”, Jesus receives a physical and human body from Mary, becoming fully a human person.

In Jesus, God lives among us – as a baby, child, teenager and an adult. He experienced our fragile humanity – hunger, sadness, joy, celebration, rejection. He embraced our human suffering and death as a part of being truly human.

Through his touch, God touches and heals us. In turn, we can touch our God. Through his words, we hear our God speaking to us – using stories that allow us to understand the purpose of our life and to experience a glimpse of life eternal in the Father’s house.

Jesus stills speaks his words to us in the Gospels Today, 2000 years later, the life and words of Jesus are still available for us in printed form in the Gospels in the Bible. And this is even available in Apple or Android Apps! (Maybe this is a good excuse to request, or better still, to give a smart phone as a Christmas gift.) The Bible is indeed the most translated book throughout the world. From Google search, I found “that the Bible far outsold any other book, with a whopping 3.9 billion copies sold over the last 50 years.”

Bahasa Malaysia Bibles for Malaysian Christians As Archbishop, I have been privileged to work with people from all works of life, with different languages, cultures and faiths. I have come to an even greater appreciation of the cultural diversity and the harmony in Sarawak. Being born and

having lived on this soil, I identify myself as an “anak Sarawak”. Today I have a greater appreciation of our Malaysian language that unites all of us as Malaysians.

For Christians in Malaysia, we have two versions of Bahasa Malaysia (BM) bible translations, namely, Alkitab - Berita Baik and the Alkitab - Versi Borneo (AVB).

You may be wondering why I am talking about Bibles in the Malaysian language.

This is because Jesus, by becoming a human person, can only speak to us through a language. When we listen and understand his message, we can then respond by loving God and our neighbour. I have started reading the Gospels in BM. I found the AVB translation accurate and it expresses God’s Word beautifully in Bahasa Malaysia. Now I am starting to appreciate the BM classes from my school days as I suddenly found the Gospels coming alive through Bahasa Malaysia in a fresh way.

I believe that AVB will benefit our children and youth who are using the national language in schools and will definitely contribute towards their Bahasa Malaysia proficiency.

Christmas is a time to receive and share with the poor and needy In closing, on the first Christmas, the Almighty God on high, came down to earth and became a human person in Jesus so that he can speak to us today. But this time we can hear him in our own Malaysian language!

Let us remember that Christmas is more than presents, gifts or Christmas trees.

Let us celebrate Christmas by receiving Jesus as a gift and sharing his love, joy and peace. “Christmas is really Christmas when it happens in our heart!” In this season of sharing and giving, let us remember to bless those who are in need with our gifts of friendship, sharing and caring. Wising you all a very holy Christmas and blessed new year!

Never lose your enthusiasm, Pope tells Bangladeshi youth

Hari Belia St Jude 2017 BUNAN — Pada 25 November lepas, Ministri Belia Paroki (PYM) St Jude Bunan-Tebedu meraikan Hari Belia di Gereja St James, Kpg Pangkalan Amo, yang disertai kira-kira 200 orang belia dari seluruh kawasan Bunan-Tebedu.

Program ini diadakan untuk menghimpunkan belia di samping mengeratkan tali persaudaraan antara belia dari pelbagai kampung dalam Paroki St Jude Bunan-Tebedu.

Hari Belia ini dimulakan dengan acara sukaneka antara Pergerakan Belia Katolik (CYM) dari 15 buah kampung. Peserta begitu bersemangat dan bertanding dengan penuh semangat kesukanan.

Pada sebelah petang, program diteruskan dengan Misa Kudus di Gereja St

James bersama penduduk kampung Pangkalan Amo. Misa dipimpin oleh penasihat PYM Father Galvin Richard Ngumbang dan Father Kulenthai Selvan. Selepas Kudus, peserta makan malam bersama jemaat.

DHAKA, Bangladesh — Speaking to youth in Bangladesh on 2 December, Pope Francis said he is always rejuvenated by young people, and encouraged them to never lose their sense of enthusiasm and adventure for life, even when things are hard.

He also stressed the importance of clinging to God and his wisdom, using it as a guide to help them avoid the world’s false promises, and to go out of themselves in order to grow in faith and solidarity.

In his prepared remarks, Francis said this youthful enthusiasm “is linked to a spirit of adventure,” and pointed to Bangladeshi poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, who called the nation’s youth “fearless.”

Young people, he said, “are always ready to move forward, to make things happen and to take risks. I encourage you to keep moving with this enthusiasm in the good times and the bad times.”

No matter what, he told them

to “keep moving, especially in those moments when you feel weighed down by problems and sadness, and when you look out and God seems to be nowhere on the horizon.”

However, he also stressed the importance of making sure they are moving forward on the right path, which means “journeying” through life, rather than “wandering aimlessly.”

“Our life is not without direction, it has a purpose given to us by God. He guides and directs us with his grace,” the Pope said, explaining that this direction is like “a computer software” God has placed within us that “helps us to discern his divine program and, in freedom, to respond.”

But like all software, this too “needs constantly to be updated,” he said, and told the youths to “keep updating your program, by listening to God and accepting the challenge of doing his will.”

奧克蘭華人天主教團體 舉辦海外華人牧傳會議

全球海外华人牧传研讨会

（香港公教报讯）奥克兰华 人天主教团体十月十九至二十 三日新西兰奥克兰举办全球海 外华人牧传研讨会，以家庭为 重心去探讨牧养与福传课题。 牧传研讨会主题为「海外 新传，家庭为重」，以回应教 宗方济各近年所宣扬的福音喜 乐和家庭生活。今届研讨会标 语为「福音寰宇传，信爱家庭 播」。 是次嘉宾讲者包括韩大辉 总主教、朱达章神父、郑旷野 玛利亚修女及彭保禄神父，主 礼嘉宾为汪中璋荣休主教；还 有海外的神师、神长、修女； 七十五位海外及六十七位当地 的信徒参与。

世界主教會議：線上問卷截止日期是12月31日

届世界主教会议以来到 目前为止所走过的路。 他还提到把会议预备文 件和问卷寄给相关组 织，开通网站鼓励青年 填写线上问卷，在社交 网站上开设专门渠道， 以及今年9月召开的有 关青年现况的国际研讨 会。 世界主教会议秘 书长发言後，常务委员 会成员与教宗共同讨 论了制定工作文件的准则，好 能把仍在进行的咨询阶段的所 有不同成果纳入其中。随後与 会人士也提供了有关上述国际 研讨会工作的一些报告，迄今 为止收到的预备文件问卷的答 覆，以及仍在进行的线上填写 问卷的首批有关数据。会议决 定将线上问卷截止日期保留到 今年12月31日。 在众多活动计划中，世界 主教会议秘书处将於2018年3月

（梵蒂冈电台讯）圣座 新闻室11月21日举行记者会， 宣布梵蒂冈博物馆与中国文化 产业投资基金将首次联合举办 「中梵双向同步艺术展」。 梵蒂冈博物馆和北京故宫将於 2018年春天同时开启展览，梵 蒂冈借出的收藏品还将在中国 各大城市巡回展出。这次展 览属於「美，让我们结合在一 起」的计划，旨在透过艺术 的普世语言创造文化合作的形 式。 梵蒂冈博物馆馆长亚塔 （Barbara Jatta）女士在记者 会上指出，「这将是教宗的博 物馆首次与中国的文化机构合 作办展。我认为，这项新活动 的真正动机是从起初就激励我 们的精神。这个想法在这几个 月内逐渐成形，我们於是达成 共识：运用一个普世语言，它

《在中國的靈魂內》新書發表會： 中國教會完全屬於中國且完全屬於天主教

耶穌會傳教士龍華民神父的《地震解》 首次譯成意大利文

（梵蒂冈电台讯）「《地 震解》是极具独创性的文本， 属於欧洲和中国更广泛文化与 科学交流的范畴。」汉学家西 尔维亚·托罗（Silvia Toro） 女士在介绍这本书的重要意义 时，如此表示。这是首次把古 老的文本从中文翻译成意大利 文，由托罗女士负责编辑。 《地震解》之所以「古 老」是因为它於1629年在北京 写成，以对话的格式成书。 一位中国文人李松毓询问耶 稣会传教士龙华民（Nicola Longobardo）神父有关地震的 科学理论，龙神父於是着重略 述了地震的九个学理：「其 一、震有何故；其二、震有几

等；其三、震因何地；其四、 震之声响；其五、震几许大； 其六、震发有时；其七、震几 许久；其八、震之预兆；其 九、震之诸徵。」 利玛窦神父过世後，龙华 民神父继续他在中国的传教工 作。托罗表示，这本十七世纪 时写成的《地震解》也适合於 现在的情况。「这本书是在巨 大变革的历史背景下，於明朝 末年，在一个发生过强烈地震 後的时期写成的。此书的现实 意义在於它的科学架构，但也 提醒人们注意人类和个人的责 任和道德问题，因为如果在发 生地震後有很多人死亡，这也 与人有关。」

教宗指彌撒並非表演 應專心勿用手機拍照

（梵蒂冈电台讯）教宗方 济各十一月八日在圣伯多禄广 场主持公开活动时指出，弥撒 不是表演，而是能与天主之爱 相遇的美善方式。 教宗在要理讲授中开启关 于「感恩圣事」新系列主题， 他于八日的第一讲中阐述「弥 撒圣祭」的意义，勉励信友要 充分理解感恩圣事的美善，好 能「愈加圆满地活出我们与天 主的关系」。 谈到弥撒的意义，以及梵 二大公会议关于信徒礼仪培育 的训导，教宗说，过去两千年 许多基督徒「为护卫感恩圣事 坚持到底，直至死亡」，今天 亦然。他勉励信徒教导孩子好 好划十字圣号，不在弥撒当中

来到一年的十二月，我们 其实就可以感受到圣诞节的 气氛。当我十一月初到一个商 场，就看到到处已在摆卖圣诞 树、玩具、圣诞装饰品。现 在在商场里更有圣诞老人、圣 诞树、驯鹿、雪人和下雪的场 景。我们为世界也和我们一起 庆祝圣诞节而感恩。 尽管如此，两千年前的第 一个圣诞节可不是那么浪漫。 位处半沙漠地带的白冷城的夜 晚是那么地寒冷，而且又没有 房间没有床位。但我们知道， 若瑟和玛利亚以温暖的双臂和 慈爱的心迎接祂的诞生，穷苦 的牧羊人（路2:1-20）和来自 东方的贤士（玛2:1-12）欢迎 祂。 『耶稣因圣神降孕，由童贞玛 利亚降生而成为人』 在白冷城的第一个圣诞 夜，天主成了人，寄居在我们 中间。每个主日，在我们的信 经中，我们宣认祂「由童贞玛 利亚降生，而成为人。」拉丁 文的carne，翻译成「肉身。 」因此，藉着道成肉身，耶稣 从玛利亚取得躯体和人类的肉 身，成为完完全全的一个人。 天主在耶稣内生活在我们 中间---从婴孩、儿童、少年到 成人。祂经历了我们脆弱的人 性---饥饿、伤心、喜悦、欢庆

和被排斥。祂接受我们人类的 苦难和死亡，作为一个真人的 一部分。 藉着祂的触摸，天主触摸 并治愈我们。反过来，我们可 以触摸我们的天主。藉着祂的 言语，我们听到天主对我们说 话---用故事来让我们明白我们的 生命的目的，及体验天父家永 恒生命的一瞥。 耶稣仍然在福音中对我们说话 两千年后的今天，耶稣在 世生命和言语仍然可以在印刷 成书的圣经的福音中找到，甚 至可以在苹果或安卓的应用程 式中找到！（这或许是一个好 理由要求---更好是送---一架多 功能手机作为圣诞礼物☺）。 圣经确实是世界上被翻译最多 的书。从谷歌的搜索，我发现 「圣经的销量比任何其他书籍 多，在过去50年间共售出39亿本 的惊人数字。」 马来西亚基督徒的马来西亚文 圣经 身为总主教，我曾经有幸 与各行各业，不同语言、不同 文化和信仰的人们共事，并因 此更深地体会砂朥越的多元文 化与和谐。在这片土地出生生 活，我自诩为「砂朥越之子」 。今天，我更能欣赏团结我们 马来西亚人民的马来西亚语。 为马来西亚的基督徒，我 们的马来西亚文圣经有两个翻 译版本，即Alkitab-Berita Baik 和Alkitab-Versi Borneo(AVB)。 你或许会奇怪我为什么要讲马 来西亚文的圣经，这是因为耶 稣，藉着成为一个人，只能通 过一个语言和我们说话。当我 们听到并明白祂的信息，我 们才能以爱天主和爱邻人来回 应。 我已经开始读马来西亚文

的福音。我发现AVB版的翻译 准确，它用马来西亚文美好地 表达了天主的话。现在，当我 忽然发现福音藉着马来西亚文 以一个新的方式活了起来，我 开始感恩我读书时上的国文 课。我相信AVB将会惠及我们 在学校里用国文的孩子和青年 们，并无疑将对他们在掌握流 利的马来西亚文上有所帮助。 圣诞节是接受和与贫穷的和需 要的人分享的时候 在第一个圣诞节，在高天 的全能天主，降下人间在耶稣 内作一个人，为了祂今天能对 我们说话。但这次，我们可以 听到祂用我们自己的马来西亚 文对我们说话！ 让我们记住，圣诞节不是 只有礼物、或圣诞树。让我们 以当作一个恩典迎接耶稣及分 享祂的爱、喜乐和平安来庆祝 圣诞节。「当它发生在我们心 上，圣诞节才是真正的圣诞 节！」在这个分享和给予的季 节，让我们记住用我们友谊、 分享和关心的恩赐，祝福那些 有需要的人们。祝大家过一个 非常神圣的圣诞节和祝福满满 的新年！

家族治愈大会圆满落幕 （古晋讯）11月24日至26日 古晋总教区华语教务协进会主 催邀请来自沙巴加尔默罗孝女 会的孙秀云修女主讲家族治愈 大会。在协办各单位：圣若瑟 总主教座堂华语联委会，圣三 堂华语联委会，圣体堂华语联 委会，圣马尔谷华文理事会及 西连圣德莉莎堂华文组多次会 议筹备下，圆满地在总教区新 牧灵中心圣若瑟大礼堂举行。 这次大会总共吸引了近三 百位古晋总教区，诗巫，美 里，马六甲，新加坡的教友参 与盛会。同时大会也特邀黄祯 贤神父和陳章喜神父主持弥撒 和朝拜圣体。 在大会讲座中，孙秀云修 女和大家分享了我们的原祖犯 罪如何延续影响了现在的我 们。在生理，心理，遗传及病 痛，以及灵性的遺傳有可能一 部份来自原罪。孙修女说： 「祖先的罪可能会影响我们， 但是不要害怕，因为耶稣基 督已经来了，祂已经救赎了我 们，所以我们的希望就在耶稣 的身上。」她鼓励大家铭記圣 经中马尔谷第五章36节：「不 要怕，只管信。」「以双目注 视着耶稣，祂是创始者和完成 者，一切的疾病是为了光荣天 主」（若9） 另外修女也告诉大家要有 健康的爱在身体在心灵。在玛

26章26节亦告诉我们耶稣牺牲自 己建立圣体圣事。天主赐下和 牺牲了祂的心肝宝贝，而我们 的教友领了圣体，我们亦成为 天主父的心肝宝贝。弥撒是天 主父接見心肝宝贝的温馨相聚 的约会，我们要珍惜每周一次 与天主的相聚。 与己亡者的交流也必须要有 耶稣的同在，不然会因此而被 束缚和困扰 。或许这时需要切 断祈祷来切割这种束缚和困扰 的关系。 人与黑暗势力的纠结 中，呼唤耶稣圣名常常会有奇

迹般的恩赐。 在这三天的大会分别举行了 3场的朝拜圣体与医治，开放给 愿意親近耶稣的每一个人，让 耶稣医治每一个人的苦恼与病 痛。修女亦劝勉大家在祈祷时 必须要保持静心靜默，这样才 能夠和天主联线及下载天主的 圣训与爱。 共约有5百多人参与了朝拜 圣体与医治。此次家族治愈大 会亦在朝拜圣体后结束画上句 号，出席者也带着满满的祝福 和喜悦踏上归途。(徐希丰报导)

耶稣真的是天主嗎？ （十） 在俗方济会士郭渊龙执事 自公元313年，在君士坦 丁大帝统治时期，在他的母亲 海倫納皇后坚决的说服下，基 督信仰大致上成为了罗马帝国 的国教。虽然君士坦丁本身从 未真正成为基督徒，但他肯定 他可以利用基督信仰来团结他 那日益扩展的帝国。 但君士坦丁认为有益于团 结他的政治帝国的这个工具， 也受到各种不同的关于耶稣基 督的看法的威胁，特别是在祂 的人性和天主性的问题上。君 士坦丁不能对那些不同的看法 置之不理，因为在教会中神学 上的不团结也将意味着他的政 治帝国有被拆散的危险。 就是在那时候，为了努力 使教会行动一致，圣教会开始 制定关于教会对耶稣基督的了 解的正式声明。主教们在多个 时期在指定的地点聚首，召开 神圣会议，解决对耶稣的身份 上的许多分歧，并制定了那些 声明。 5. 早期教会确定了耶稣的 天主性的一次会议 于是在凯撒·弗拉维·君 士坦丁(Emperor Carsar Flavius Constantine)大帝指示下，在 公元235年召开了尼西亚大公 会议。尼西亚位于小亚细亚（ 当今的土耳其）君士坦丁堡（ 当今的伊斯坦布尔）西面。在 这个神圣会议中，君士坦丁大 帝要求主教们为所有基督宗教 就耶稣基督的本质下定义，让 教会内不再在这方面混淆和争 论。尼西亚大公会议回应以轰 然地断言，耶稣是天主也是永 恒的，祂和天父的关系是「同 性同体的」。这个会议也承认 了圣三---圣父、圣子和圣神--为共同平等和共永恒的三位。

在这个会议中，有一位名 叫亚略（Arius）的神父，他 被指传播关于耶稣的另一个诠 释，主张耶稣不是永恒的，说 祂其实是由圣父创造的。亚略 神父的教导广泛传播，而在教 会内造成了分裂。在亚略的主 张中，耶稣不可能与父具有同 样的性体，否则那性体就已是 「可以分割的」，或是「可以 通传的」，这样的话，父的性 体便不是独一的。这就意味， 耶稣只能因父的旨意而存在， 就像所有其他受造物一样。按 亚略的主张，耶稣和父是有着 特别的关系，但不是「性体」 的关系（用更技术性的神学词 语说，即不是「存有的」）。 他说，不像父永恒已存在，耶 稣有时候是不存在的。 亚略反对耶稣的天主性的 论点被尼西亚大公会议的教 父们的压倒性看法驳倒。主教 们，如亚历山大，在著名的圣 亚大纳修（St.Athanasius）(那 时候在尼西亚大公会议期间他 仅是一个卑微的执事)的协助下 激烈争辩，捍卫关于耶稣基督 和父一样是永恒的的事实。 在君士坦丁大帝的催促 下，大公会议以多数票定断教 会对耶稣的了解。接下来就是 今天称为「尼西亚信经」的信 理声明。这信经断然地反对亚 略。它断言圣子是「出自真天 主的真天主」。虽然它宣称圣 子是独生子，但信经中加入了 「圣父所生」，而「非圣父所 造」。更说，耶稣「与圣父同 性同体」。 尼西亚大公会议也宣布， 「那些说『有时祂（子）不存 在』和『在祂出生之前，祂是 不存在的』，以及『因为他是

Adakah Yesus sebenarnya Tuhan?

Dari tahun 313 Masihi seterusnya, agama Kristian lebih kurang menjadi agama “rasmi” Empayar Romawi, di bawah kepimpinan Maharaja Constantine, yang dipercayai telah dipujuk oleh bonda baginda, Maharani Helena. Walaupun Constantine sendiri tidak pernah menjadi Kristian sepenuhnya, baginda berpendapat baginda dapat menggunakan agama Kristian untuk menyatukan empayar baginda yang sentiasa berkembang.

Walau bagaimanapun, instrumen ini yang Constantine anggap menguntungkan untuk perpaduan empayar politik baginda juga diancam oleh pelbagai pandangan mengenai Yesus Kristus, terutamanya pandangan mengenai kudratNya yang manusiawi dan ilahi. Constantine tidak boleh membiarkan sahaja pandangan yang berbeza ini tanpa menanganinya, kerana perpecahan teologi dalam Gereja juga bermakna ancaman yang boleh memusnahkan empayar politik baginda.

Ketika inilah, dalam usaha untuk memperbetulkan keadaan, Gereja Katolik Suci mula merangka kenyataan rasmi tentang fahamannya mengenai Yesus Kristus. Kenyataan ini dirangka di Majlis Suci uskup-uskup yang bersidang di tempat-tempat tertentu dalam jangka waktu tertentu untuk menyelesaikan perbezaan pendapat yang berleluasa mengenai identiti Yesus.

5. Satu Majlis Gereja Awal mengesahkan keilahian Yesus.

Selepas diarahkan oleh Maharaja Carsar Flavius Constantine, Majlis Nicea bersidang pada 235 Masihi. Ini adalah tempat yang terletak di Asia Minor (sekarang Turki), ke timur Constantinople (sekarang Istanbul). Di Majlis Suci ini, Constantine menuntut agar uskup-uskup membuat ketetapan muktamad mengenai kudrat atau sifat Yesus Kristus bagi seluruh agama Kristian supaya kekeliruan dan perbalahan tidak berlaku lagi di dalam Gereja. Sebagai jawapan, Majlis Nicea dengan lantang menegaskan Yesus adalah ilahi dan abadi, dan hubunganNya dengan Bapa adalah “of one substance” (homoousios) atau “dari satu isi”. Majlis ini juga mengenali Tritunggal Kudus - Bapa, Putera dan Roh Kudus - sebagai tiga Oknum atau Peribadi (Persons) yang sama rata (co-equal) dan sama-sama abadi (co-eternal).

Di Majlis ini, seorang paderi bernama Arius, yang dituduh menyebar tafsiran alternatif tentang Yesus, mengemukakan hujah bahawa Yesus bukan diri (being) yang abadi dan Dia sebenarnya dicipta oleh Bapa. Ajaran Arius telah tersebar dengan begitu berleluasa sehinggakan ia pada ketika itu mencetuskan perpecahan dalam Gereja. Pada pandangan Arius, Yesus tidak mungkin mempunyai inti pati (essence) atau diri (being) Bapa, kerana jika sebaliknya, inti pati itu dapat “dibahagikan” atau “disampaikan” sehinggakan inti pati Bapa tidak lagi unik. Maka itu, ini bermakna Yesus dapat wujud hanya dengan kehendak Bapa, sama seperti dengan semua makhluk lain.

Menurut Arius, Yesus sememangnya mempunyai hubungan istimewa dengan Bapa, tetapi bukan hubungan “inti pati” (iaitu bukan hubungan “ontologi”, satu istilah teologi yang lebih teknikal). Tidak seperti Bapa yang sudah wujud dalam keabadian, Yesus pernah tidak wujud, katanya.

Hujah Arius yang menafikan keilahian Yesus dirobek dan disangkal habishabisan oleh pandangan pandangan Bapa-Bapa Gereja yang menghadiri Majlis berkenaan di Nicea. Uskup seperti Alexander, dibantu oleh Saint Athanasius yang terkenal (dan ketika itu hanya seorang diakon yang sederhana dalam Majlis tersebut), mengemukakan hujah yang lantang dan bersemangat untuk mempertahankan kebenaran tentang Yesus Kristus, bahawa Dia adalah abadi sama seperti Bapa.

Atas desakan Maharaja, Majlis Suci itu membuat keputusan menerusi undian majoriti untuk memperhalusi fahaman Gereja mengenai Yesus. Apa yang terhasil adalah satu kenyataan doktrin yang hari ini dikenali sebagai ‘Nicene Creed’ (Kredo Nicea). Kredo (ikrar kepercayaan) ini adalah anti-Arian. Ia menegaskan Putera

adalah “Allah yang benar dari Allah yang benar”. Walaupun mengakui Putera sebagai dikandung, kredo itu menambah kata-kata “dari Bapa” dan “bukan dijadikan”. Dan lebih daripada itu, Yesus “seisi (homoousios) dengan Bapa”.

Majlis turut mengisytiharkan, “Tetapi mereka yang berkata, “Dia (Putera) pernah tidak wujud’ dan ‘Sebelum dia dilahirkan, dia tidak wujud’ dan ‘Oleh kerana dia dijadikan dari bahan yang tidak wujud, dia sama ada dari isi atau inti pati lain’, dan mereka yang memanggil ‘Allah sebagai Putera Allah yang dapat berubah’, semua ini disangkal oleh Gereja Katolik.” (Lampiran kepada Kredo Nicaea [325 Masihi]) Arius dan pengikutnya yang enggan mengubah fikiran telah dibuang dari Gereja, tetapi hanya untuk satu musim yang singkat. Majlis berjaya mengecam Arianisme, tetapi ia gagal menghapuskan bidaah tersebut. Selepas kemangkatan Maharaja Constantine, putera baginda Constantius mengambil alih Empayar Romawi Timur dan memerintah sebagai Constantius II. Malangnya, Constantius II memihak kepada bidaah Arian dan penyokongnya. Di bawah naungan baginda, golongan Arian mula mengatasi Gereja dalam Empayar Romawi Timur.

Pada waktu ini, Diakon Athanasius sudah menggantikan Alexander sebagai uskup, dan beliau enggan menerima kemunculan semula bidaah Arian. Beliau dengan cepat menonjolkan diri sebagai musuh utama Arianisme dengan menulis karya yang menakjubkan untuk menentang bidaah ini, bagi menjelaskan doktrin Gereja mengenai hubungan Bapa dengan Putera. Walaupun bertentangan dengan norma politik dan agama ketika itu dalam usaha beliau mempertahankan kebenaran, Athanasius enggan tunduk. Kerana ini, beliau mengalami penderitaan. Namun tiada apa yang dapat melemahkan beliau untuk terus berpegang teguh kepada kredo atau kepercayaan yang telah dirangka di Majlis Nicea. Apabila Athanasius meninggal dunia pada 373 Masihi, batu nisan beliau telah diukir: Athanasius Contra Mundum (“Athanasius menentang Dunia”). Menerusi rancangan ilahi, ketepatan keputusan yang dibuat di Majlis Nicea kemudian disahkan semula dengan tegas di sebuah lagi majlis di Constantinople pada 381 Masihi.

(Ia mesti dinyatakan, supaya orang tidak akan salah faham, bahawa doktrin tentang keilahian Yesus tidak dicipta di Majlis-majlis tersebut. Formulasi yang lebih formal atau rasmi biasanya dirangka apabila Gereja berdepan dengan idea-idea yang mencabar kebenaran yang sudah diketahui Gereja bagi menjelaskan apa yang sudah dipercayai sebelum itu.)

Apa yang terhasil dari Majlis Nicea adalah satu kenyataan doktrin yang hari ini dikenali sebagai ‘Nicene Creed’ (Kredo Nicea).

Bimbingan Advent bagi orang Katolik yang sibuk: 10 tip untuk menjalani musim ini Oleh Mike Jordan Laskey Advent merupakan musim liturgi yang ditaraf begitu rendah sekali. Ia ditelan dalam kesibukan pra-Krismas, dan ia lebih singkat dan kurang tegang berbanding Lent, tetapi ia adalah waktu yang indah dan senyap dan wajar ditandai. Lebih daripada seruan nyata untuk “pergi ke sembahyang Misa pada semua Ahad Advent dan setiap Ahad”, di sini adalah 10 tip mudah untuk menjalankan Advent anda, dari seorang individu yang sibuk kepada individu lain yang sibuk.

1. Baca buku kebaktian harian yang singkat.

Hanya beberapa muka surat sehari, maksimum. Terdapat banyak pilihan yang hebat untuk dipertimbangkan.

2. Cari masa senyap.

Musim liturgi Advent adalah senyap dan gelap, sementara kita menanti cahaya Kristus menyinar pada waktu Krismas. Musim beli belah dan parti Advent pula hingar-bingar dan amat silau. Cari masa senyap selain pada waktu tidur. Mungkin cuba mengulangi doa, “Datanglah, Tuhan Yesus” kepada diri sendiri perlahan-lahan sambil menarik dan menghembus nafas dengan mata tertutup. Anda boleh melakukan ini di pejabat atau dapur anda. Dan dalam semangat ini …

3. Ia adalah OK untuk berkata tidak.

Kita tidak perlu pergi ke setiap parti yang menjemput kita atau pergi ke pusat beli belah pada Sabtu sebelum Natal atau melihat gelung iklan kereta musim salji yang tidak henti-henti. Seperti apa seorang mentor saya suka sebut, “‘Tidak’ adalah satu ayat yang lengkap.” Sudah

tentulah terdapat kewajipan tertentu pada waktu ini – terutamanya bagi ibu bapa dengan anak kecil, saya belajar – yang kita tidak boleh kata “tidak”. Jadi saya perlu berlatih untuk memberi perhatian kepada aktiviti yang perlu dan mana yang boleh langkaui.

4. Jangan lupakan muzik Advent.

Saya di sini bukan untuk menjadi polis liturgi dan menyuruh anda mengetepikan muzik Krismas sehingga senja pada 24 Disember. Bagaimanapun, terdapat banyak lagu dan mazmur Advent yang hebat untuk dimasukkan ke dalam pilihan anda. Beberapa lagu kegemaran saya: versi Sufjan Stevens bagi lagu “O Come, O Come Emmanuel”, versi moden Steve Angrisano bagi klasik yang sama itu; album klasikal/jazz hebat komposer JJ Wright “O Emmanuel”, lagu Perancis “O Come Divine Messiah”; dan “Christ Circle Round Us” arahan Dan Schutte.

5. Hiasi, walaupun sedikit.

Kita orang Katolik adalah jemaat sakramental: bau, loceng, kaca berwarna, muzik indah, roti dan wain. Tuhan dapat berkunjung menerusi pengalaman sensori kita. Jadi pamerkan set kelahiran Yesus.

Cari sedikit kehijauan atau kehijauan tiruan di suatu tempat. Dan, sekurangkurangnya …

6. Nyalakan lilin lingkaran bunga Advent.

Sebut doa singkat apabila anda menyalakannya setiap Ahad. Keluarga dan rumah adalah apa yang dipanggil oleh dokumen Vatikan II Lumen Gentium sebagai “gereja domestik”, dan tradisi lingkaran bunga Advent adalah cara mudah yang indah untuk menguatkan

Saya percaya ramai di antara kita tidak suka menanti.

Pada lirik lagu kumpulan Harmoni yang bertajuk ‘Penantian’ ada tertulis “penantian, suatu seksa yang tidak tertanggung...manakala.. kepastian, suatu penawar dalam suka dan duka.”

Kita sudah biasa menanti kedatangan seseorang. Jika orang kenamaan hendak datang melawat kampung kita, semua terlibat untuk membuat

persiapan. Sebulan sebelum kedatangannya, mesyuarat diadakan. Program disusun berdasarkan keperluan pihak yang datang melawat. Beberapa hari sebelum kedatangannya, gotong royong diadakan untuk menyediakan tempat. Makanan disediakan beberapa jam sebelum kedatangan tetamu.

Kita datang satu jam lebih awal daripada tetamu pada hari yang telah ditetapkan. Jika tetamu lewat datang, kita tetap

komuniti beriman yang kecil tetapi perlu itu.

7. Ada seorang dua anak kecil? Tambah sebuah buku Krismas ke dalam senarai bacaan sebelum tidur.

Bercakap mengenai gereja domestik: Jika anda ada anak yang mendengar anda membaca pada waktu tidur, tambah buku mengenai kelahiran Yesus untuk kanakkanak kepada koleksi anda.

8. Sokong pertubuhan yang bekerja untuk keadilan sosial.

Musim Advent dan Krismas merupakan inspirasi yang (lebih) baik untuk menyokong organisasi kebajikan.

Seperti orang majus membawa apa sahaja yang mereka miliki untuk diberikan kepada raja yang baharu lahir, hadiah kita sendiri kepada organisasi yang melanjutkan usaha membina kerajaan Tuhan di Bumi adalah satu cara untuk meraikan legasi mereka. Selain agensi bebas yang menakjubkan di seluruh negara, agensi kebajikan Katolik tempatan merupakan badan bukan mencari keuntungan yang hebat dan boleh diharapkan.

9. Timbang Sakramen Perdamaian.

Seseorang yang saya kenali dan biasa dengan carian internet Katolik memberitahu saya “doa penyesalan” merupakan salah satu perkara carian Google Katolik yang paling popular setiap Advent dan Lent. Ini tidaklah begitu memeranjatkan, kerana banyak paroki mengadakan servis Sakramen Perdamaian pada waktu kedua-dua musim ini. Jika Advent adalah mengenai persiapan, tiada cara yang lebih baik untuk menyediakan hati dan roh kita.

Musim Advent adalah musim untuk mempersiapkan diri menanti kedatangan Tuhan. Penantian kita adalah berdasarkan kepada kenyataan Yesus bahawa, “Anak Manusia datang di awan dengan kekuasaan dan kemuliaan yang besar” (Mat. 24:30). Walaupun demikian, “tidak seorang pun mengetahui hari atau waktunya...hanya Bapa yang tahu” (Mat. 24:36). Hingga ke saat ini kita masih belum melihat tanda-tanda kedatangan-Nya namun kata-Nya, “berjagajagalah dan berwaspadalah” (Mk. 13:33).

Adakah penantian selama dua ribu tahun ini suatu seksa yang tidak tertanggung? Berapa lama lagikah kita harus menanti?

Sejauh manakah kita berharap akan kedatangan-Nya? “Di sisi Tuhan, satu hari tidak ada bezanya dengan seribu tahun. Bagi-Nya, keduaduanya sama sahaja” (2 Petrus

10. Renungkan “tiga kedatangan Tuhan”.

St Bernard di Clairvaux menggambarkan tiga kedatangan ini sebagai kelahiran Yesus di Bethlehem, kedatangan Yesus ke dalam kehidupan kita pada masa sekarang, dan kedatangan terakhir Kristus dalam kemuliaan pada hari terakhir. Dalam Advent, kita menunggu dan bersiap sedia untuk ketiga-tiga kedatangan ini. Kebanyakan musim Advent, saya menghabiskan kira-kira 95 peratus doa dan renungan dan tenaga saya dengan memberi tumpuan kepada kedatangan pertama sahaja – dengan palungan, gembala, malaikat, si bayi. Saya tidak merenungkan kedatangan Yesus yang kedua dan ketiga. Saya harap saya akan mengikuti sekurang-kurangnya beberapa cadangan ini yang saya telah kemukakan di sini, dan ia dapat membantu saya fokus kepada kisah Advent yang melangkaui Bethlehem.

Sebelum anda menulis idea-idea ini di dalam senarai periksa, satu pelepasan: Saya berpendapat kesemua 10 amalan ini adalah idea-idea yang bagus, tetapi senarai ini bukan peluru perak yang akan menjadikan Advent ini “Advent terbaik dalam sejarah” bagi anda. Kepercayaan, kegembiraan dan kedamaian adalah pemberian yang hanya dapat diberikan oleh Tuhan sahaja. Menerusi disiplin rohani, kita hanya dapat meletakkan diri dalam keadaan rendah hati dan rasa syukur di hadapan Tuhan, menjemput Roh Kudus ke dalam kehidupan kita, dan bersedia untuk bertindak.

3:8). Sejarah Penyelamatan adalah bukti yang kukuh di mana kedatangan Juruselamat jauh lebih lama daripada yang dijangkakan. Walaupun demikian, bukanlah bererti Tuhan tidak memperdulikan umat-Nya. Dia sentiasa berada dengan mereka sejak dari dunia ini diciptakan. Komitmen-Nya dibuktikan apabila Allah Bapa telah mengutus Putera TunggalNya ke dunia ini agar manusia tidak binasa tetapi beroleh kehidupan sejati dan kekal (Yoh. 3:16). Yesus sendiri juga telah berjanji akan menyertai pengikut-pengikut-Nya hingga ke akhir zaman (Mat. 28: 30).

Berpandukan kepada fakta di atas maka penantian kita adalah satu harapan yang pasti; kepastian yang menjadi penawar dalam suka dan duka. Tuhan pasti akan datang untuk kali yang kedua dengan kekuasaan dan kemuliaan yang besar. Oleh yang demikian, jika kita sanggup memberikan masa dan tenaga untuk membuat persiapan

menyambut kedatangan orang kenamaan ke kampung kita, maka kita haruslah melakukan perkara yang sama untuk kedatangan Tuhan. Jika kita sanggup datang satu jam lebih awal daripada orang kenamaan yang melawat kampung kita, kita patut berbuat demikian semasa Misa Kudus atau ibadat Hari Minggu. Persiapan kita adalah sepanjang hayat dan Musim Advent hanyalah masa untuk kita memeriksa diri, menilai sejauh mana persiapan kita menanti kedatangan Tuhan. Perayaan Hari Krismas akan benar-benar menjadi ‘bayangan’ kedatangan Tuhan yang kedua kalinya. Pada hari tersebut kita berkumpul sebagai sebuah keluarga, termasuklah yang bukan Kristian untuk merayakan kedatangan Juruselamat.

Kata Yesus, “berjagajagalah dan berwaspadalah.... janganlah kamu didapati tidur” (Mk.13:33 & 36).

Father Patrick Peyton dan perjalanan ke arah kekudusan Oleh Fr Kenneth Doyle

Seorang rakan memberitahu saya baru-baru ini bahawa alasan (cause) untuk mengangkat Father Patrick Peyton sebagai seorang santo sudah dihantar ke Vatikan. Tahukah anda kedudukannya sekarang dan bilakah beliau mungkin akan diisytiharkan sebagai seorang santo? (Saya berharap dan berdoa agar ia akan berlaku dalam hayat saya.) Selain itu, apakah peringkat bagi seseorang untuk diisytiharkan sebagai santo?

Kanonisasi Father Patrick Peyton bergantung sekarang kepada Kongregasi bagi Alasan Santo di Vatikan. Pada April 2015, ‘positio’ atau dokumen pendirian rasmi, dikemukakan secara rasmi kepada kongregasi itu. Dokumen itu, satu laporan setebal 1,300 muka surat yang meneliti kehidupan dan pelayanan beliau untuk tanda-tanda kebaikan berani dan kekudusan, telah disediakan selama empat tahun, dengan mengumpul kesaksian atau testimoni dari 35 buah keuskupan di seluruh dunia.

Kongregasi itu sekarang dalam proses menyemak semula dokumentasi tersebut.

Selepas semakan semula yang baik, alasan kemudian akan dikemukakan kepada Bapa Suci dan, dengan kebenaran Bapa Suci, Father Peyton akan diisytiharkan sebagai ‘Venerable’ (Yang Dihormati). Kemudian, bukti mukjizat yang dikaitkan dengan perantaraan beliau akan dikaji dan dikenakan pemeriksaan saintifik yang ketat; satu mukjizat yang didokumenkan diperlukan untuk beatifikasi (diisytiharkan sebagai berbahagia) dan satu lagi mukjizat untuk kanonisasi (diisytiharkan sebagai orang kudus atau santo).

Father Peyton, yang disanjung di seluruh dunia sebagai “Paderi Rosari”, meninggal dunia pada 1992 di usia 83 tahun. Beliau menggalakkan doa keluarga dan mencipta slogan yang sering kita dengar, “Keluarga yang berdoa bersama kekal bersama.” Beliau menganjurkan perhimpunan (crusade) rosari di 40 buah negara yang menarik 28 juta orang dan merupakan perintis dalam penggunaan media moden untuk memajukan nilai-nilai keagamaan, dengan menghasilkan 600 program radio dan televisyen menggunakan bintang Hollywood dan selebriti lain.

Tidak ada cara untuk meramalkan bila sebenarnya kanonisasi beliau akan berlaku, tetapi saya sendiri juga rasa teruja untuk menyaksikannya. Saya terharu ketika Father Peyton mempelawa saya untuk menulis mukadimah bagi salah satu bukunya yang

terakhir; dan pernah sekali, ketika beliau dalam lingkungan usia 70an dan uzur, saya terserempak dengan beliau di Rom. Beliau bertanyakan ibu saya, yang beliau kenali ketika beliau pertama kali memulakan organisasi Rosari Keluarga pada zaman 1940an. Saya memberitahu beliau bahawa ibu saya sebenarnya sedang melawat saya pada minggu itu juga di Rom. Walaupun saya merayu kepada beliau untuk tidak berbuat demikian, beliau bertegas juga mahu menaiki tangga curam ke pangsapuri saya dan berjumpa dengan ibu saya untuk memberi pemberkatan kepadanya. Saya akan sentiasa mengingati “Father Pat” bukan sahaja sebagai seorang manusia yang sangat kudus, tetapi juga seorang manusia yang baik hati. — ­­ CNS (Terjemahan)

Bangunan rasmi baharu untuk Nunsiatur Apostolik

KUALA LUMPUR — Tarikh 23 November akan terpahat dalam sejarah Gereja Katolik Malaysia sebagai hari yang amat penting.

Hari itu menyaksikan pembesar Katolik di Malaysia dan Brunei, paderi dan religius, orang kenamaan awam, diplomat, ahli Parlimen, ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri dan tetamu menyaksikan perasmian bersejarah Nunsiatur Kepausan baharu di Taman U-Thant, Jalan Ampang Hilir di ibu kota persekutuan.

Uskup Agung Joseph Marino dalam ucapan alu-aluannya mengalualukan dengan ikhlas semua hadirin di perasmian rasmi kediaman dan canseri itu. Beliau menyuarakan rasa bersyukur kepada kerajaan Malaysia yang memberi banyak perhatian dan bantuan dalam seluruh proses penubuhan Nunsiatur itu di Kuala Lumpur, dan memberi “pengiktirafan khusus kepada pelbagai pegawai di Kementerian Luar dengan profesionalisme dan kepakaran ternyata amat membantu Misi kami”.

Uskup Agung Marino, Nunsio pertama ke Malaysia, dilantik oleh Pope Benedict XVI pada 16 January 2013.

Beliau turut berkhidmat sebagai Nunsio ke Timor Leste dan Wakil Delegasi Apostolik ke Brunei.

Malaysia merupakan negeri ke-179 yang menjalin hubungan diplomatik dengan Takhta Suci.

Turut hadir Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, Duta Malaysia pertama ke Vatikan. Beliau tiba di Rom pada April 2016 dan menyampaikan Surat Kepercayaan kepada Pope Francis pada 9 Jun 2016.

Uskup Agung Marino mengucapkan terima kasih kepada Uskup Agung Becciu di atas minat peribadi yang beliau berikan kepada seluruh usaha itu selain galakan oleh semua Ketua d Sekretariat Negara Paus sejak pertama kali beliau berada di Kuala Lumpur.

Nunsio Vatikan itu turut menyuarakan rasa syukur kepada Persidangan Uskup Katolik Malaysia, Singapura dan Brunei yang turut menunjukkan sokongannya kepada kerja Takhta Suci yang mengikat mereka dalam perpaduan dan persaudaraan.

Nunsio itu berharap hubungan

cemerlang di antara kedua-dua pihak akan terus berkembang,.

Hadir di acara itu adalah Timbalan Menteri Luar Dato’ Reezal Merican Naina Merican, yang mewakili kerajaan.

Dalam ucapannya, beliau berkata Malaysia telah mengambil langkah positif apabila ia menjalin hubungan diplomatik enam tahun lalu dan sejak itu hubungan Malaysia-Takhta Suci telah menyaksikan trajektori positif, berdasarkan sikap saling hormat-menghormati dan fahammemahami, dan digarisi keinginan sama untuk menggalakkan keselamatan dan keamanan global.

Pembukaan sebuah tapak tetap bagi Nunsiatur Apostolik itu adalah sebahagian daripada usaha untuk meningkatkan lagi hubungan MalaysiaTakhta Suci ke tahap lebih tinggi, kata Timbalan Menteri berkenaan.

“Malaysia mempunyai masyarakat Katolik yang pesat berkembang dan bersama komuniti beragama lain yang ada sini adalah bebas untuk mengakui dan mengamalkan agama mereka,” katanya, dan menegaskan Perdana Menteri dan kerajaan sentiasa komited untuk melindungi kebajikan setiap komuniti beragama di negara ini, termasuk jemaat Katolik.

Dalam ucapannya, Uskup Agung Becciu berkata Nunsiatur melambangkan hubungan mesra di antara Malaysia dan Takhta Suci, “Nunsiatur ini adalah tanda bagi misi antarabangsa Takhta Suci serta kebimbangannya bagi komuniti Katolik di negara ini, selain demi kebaikan semua rakyat Malaysia,” katanya.

Seorang Nunsiatur Apostolik, katanya, boleh digambarkan sebagai sejenis saluran kerana ia membolehkan kebimbangan, masalah dan keperluan komuniti dan gereja tempatan dimaklumkan kepada Paus, dan seterusnya membolehkan kebimbangan pastoral beluau bagi semua bahagian di dunia menemui ekspresi berkesan.

Beliau berkata majlis perasmian ini adalah peringatan bahawa struktur fizikal dan rangka kerja undang-undang merupakan komponen penting dan perlu dalam kerja diplomasi.

Rohingya bertemu dengan Pope Francis Calon penguatan bersedia menerima sakramen yang menunjukkan belas kasihan DHAKA — Pope Francis bertemu dengan 16 pelarian Rohingya baru-baru ini pada hujung pertemuan ekumeni dan antara agama yang diadakan di perkarangan Kediaman Uskup Agung Dhaka. Pemimpin agama itu memohon pengampunan daripada mereka di atas sikap dunia yang tidak peduli mengenai mereka dan menyuarakan simpati yang mendalam bagi tragedi mereka.

Buat pertama kali sejak lawatannya ke Myanmar, pemimpin itu menggunakan perkatana ‘Rohingya’. Beliau telah dinasihatkan untuk tidak menggunakannya di Myanmar bagi mengelak daripada menimbulkan masalah lain untuk mereka dan untuk masyarakat Kristian di negara itu.

Inilah apa yang dinyatakan oleh Pope Francis kepada pelarian Rakhine: Marilah kita sediakan ruang dalam hati kita.

Dalam nama semua orang, mereka yang menindas anda, mereka yang telah menyalahi anda, terutama sekali di atas sikap dunia yang tidak peduli,

saya memohon pengampunan anda. Pengampunan. Begitu ramai daripada anda telah memberitahu saya tentang jiwa besar Bangladesh yang telah mengalu-alukan anda. Sekarang saya merayu kepada jiwa besar anda, agar ia dapat memberikan kepada kami pengampunan yang kami cari.

DATANGLAH ROH KUDUS ... 180 jemaat bersiap sedia untuk menerima Roh Kudus dalam Penguatan KOTA PADAWAN — Seramai 180 calon Sakramen Penguatan dari Zon Teng Bukap, Zon Siburan dan Zon Simpok telah menyertai seminar untuk Calon Penguatan Siri 2/2017 pada 4 - 5 November lepas bagi Paroki St Ann, Kota Padawan di Chapel St Jude, Kpg Stabut, Padawan.

Antara objektif program ini adalah persediaan diri bagi calon untuk menerima Sakramen Penguatan pada 19 November lepas di Teng Bukap, Padawan.

Pembahagian yang disampaikan oleh Friar Don Don Ramerez, OFM dan katekis yang terlibat adalah mengenai

kepentingan doa, pemberian dan buah Roh Kudus. Calon juga berpeluang mengambil bahagian dalam Doa Kerahiman, Puji dan Sembah serta Penyembuhan Memori (Luka Batin) selain bernyanyi dan berdoa. Mereka juga memohon untuk didoakan Buah Roh Kudus.

Seminar ini diakhiri dengan Perayaan Misa Kudus yang dirayakan oleh Friar Don Don Ramerez. Di dalam khutbahnya, beliau menyeru kepada jemaat untuk tidak meninggikan diri, beriman dan mentaati kehendak Allah.

Krismas 2017

M

enjelang bulan Disember, kita dapat merasai suasana Krismas. Pada awal November, ketika saya mengunjungi kompleks membeli-belah, saya sudah melihat bahawa pokok, hiasan dan alat permainan Krismas sudah dijual.

Pada waktu ini, Santa Claus, pokok Krismas, rusa, patung salji, dan “salji” pasti sudah muncul di kompleks tersebut. Kita bersyukur kerana dunia juga meraikan Krismas bersama kita.

Bagaimanapun, Krismas pertama 2,000 tahun lalu tidak begitu romantik.

Keadaan pasti sangat sejuk dalam malam separa gurun di Bethlehem. Bilik atau katil tiada untuk Yesus. Namun kita tahu Dia diterima dengan baik ke dalam tangan hangat dan hati Yosef dan Maria dengan penuh kasih sayang, dialu-alukan oleh gembala miskin (Lukas 2:1-20) dan tiga orang raja dari timur (Matius 2:1-12).

“Oleh Roh Kudus, Yesus dikandung (incarnate) oleh Perawan Maria dan menjadi manusia” Pada malam Krismas pertama itu di Bethlehem, Tuhan menjadi manusia dan hidup di kalangan kita. Setiap Ahad, dalam Kredo kita, kita mengakui bahawa Dia “dikandung (incarnate) oleh Perawan Maria, dan menjadi manusia”. Dalam bahasa Latin, “carne” bermakna “daging”. Maka itu menerusi “inkarnasi”, Yesus menerima tubuh manusia dan fizikal dari Maria, menjadi seorang manusia sepenuhnya.

Dalam Yesus, Tuhan hidup di kalangan kita – sebagai seorang bayi, kanak-kanak, remaja dan dewasa. Dia mengalami kemanusiaan kita yang rapuh – kelaparan, kesedihan, kegembiraan, perayaan, penolakan. Dia menerima penderitaan dan kematian kita sebagai sebahagian daripada menjadi manusia sepenuhnya.

Menerusi sentuhannya, Tuhan menyentuh dan memulihkan kita. Seterusnya, kita dapat menyentuh Tuhan kita. Menerusi firmanNya, kita mendengar Tuhan kita bercakap kepada kita – menggunakan cerita yang membolehkan kita untuk memahami tujuan hidup kita dan mengalami imbasan kehidupan abadi dalam rumah Bapa.

Jesus masih menyampaikan firmanNya kepada kita dalam Injil Pada hari ini, 2,000 tahun kemudian, kehidupan dan firman Yesus masih ada bagi kita dalam bentuk cetak dalam Injil dalam Al-Kitab. Malah ini disediakan dalam Aplikasi Apple dan Android! (Mungkin ini adalah alasan yang baik untuk meminta, atau lebih baik lagi, memberi telefon pintar sebagai hadiah Krismas.)

Al-Kitab sesungguhnya buku paling banyak diterjemah di seluruh dunia. Dari carian Google, saya mendapati “Al-Kitab dijual jauh lebih banyak berbanding manamana buku lain, dengan 3.9 bilion naskhah dijual sejak 50 tahun lalu”.

Saya malah lebih menghargai kepelbagaian budaya dan keharmonian di Sarawak.

Dilahirkan dan sekian lama tinggal di bumi ini, saya memperkenalkan diri sebagai “anak Sarawak”. Sekarang saya lebih menghargai bahasa Malaysia yang menyatukan semua kita sebagai rakyat Malaysia.

Bagai masyarakat Kristian di Malaysia, kita ada dua versi terjemahan Al-Kitab dalam Bahasa Malaysia (BM) iaitu Alkitab - Berita Baik dan Alkitab - Versi Borneo (AVB). Anda mungkin tertanya-tanya kenapa saya bercakap mengenai Al-Kitab dalam bahasa Malaysia. Ini adalah kerana Yesus, yang menjadi seorang manusia, hanya dapat bercakap kepada kita menerusi bahasa. Apabila kita mendengar dan memahami mesejNya, kita dapat menjawab dengan menyayangi Tuhan dan jiran kita.

Saya sudah mula membaca Injil dalam BM. Saya mendapati terjemahan AVB tepat dan ia menyampaikan Firman Tuhan dengan indah sekali dalam Bahasa Malaysia. Sekarang saya mula menghargai kelas BM dari zaman sekolah saya kerana saya tiba-tiba mendapati Injil menjadi hidup menerusi Bahasa Malaysia dalam cara yang baharu. Saya percaya AVB akan memanfaatkan anak-anak dan belia kita yang menggunakan bahasa kebangsaan di sekolah dan pasti akan menyumbang ke arah kemahiran mereka dalam Bahasa Malaysia.

Krismas adalah masa untuk menerima dan berkongsi dengan golongan miskin dan memerlukan bantuan Sebagai penutupan, pada Krismas pertama, Tuhan Maha Besar yang duduk di tempat tinggi telah turun ke bumi dan menjadi seorang manusia dalam Yesus supaya Dia dapat bercakap kepada kita pada hari ini. Namun kali ini kita dapat mendengarNya dalam bahasa Malaysia kita sendiri!

Marilah kita ingat bahawa Krismas adalah lebih daripada hadiah, pemberian atau pokok Krismas. Marilah kita meraikan Krismas dengan menerima Yesus sebagai pemberian dan membahagikan kasih, kegembiraan dan kedamaianNya. “Krismas adalah benar-benar Krismas apabila ia berlaku di dalam hati kita!” Pada musim berkongsi dan memberi ini, marilah kita ingat untuk memberkati mereka yang memerlukan bantuan dengan hadiah persahabatan, perkongsian dan keprihatinan.

Saya mendoakan semua anda selamat menyambut Krismas yang sangat suci dan tahun baharu yang diberkati!

Sambutan Ulang Tahun Ke-10 Pusat Katolik St Ignatius

SARATOK — Pada 25 November lepas, jemaat Katolik di Pusat Katolik St Ignatius, Saratok, telah meraikan Ulang Tahun ke10 Penubuhan Pusat Katolik St Ignatius dalam Daerah Saratok.

Acara bersejarah itu dihadiri Uskup Agung Simon Poh, Uskup Agung Kuching yang seterusnya merayakan Misa Kudus untuk kira-kira 150 jemaat yang hadir.

Acara itu juga dihadiri Father Robert Jissem dan Father Augustine Jepy, Rektor Gereja Lady Queen of Peace, Sri Aman.

Jemaat dari Gereja Katolik lain seperti Gereja Our Lady Queen of Peace, Holy Family, Betong dan St Anthony, Skrang turut hadir untuk sama-sama meraikan acara bersejarah itu.

Setelah selesai Misa Kudus, Majlis Sambutan Ulang Tahun dimulakan dengan ucapan dari Pengerusi St Ignatius, Alexander Joeng Rimok yang menceritakan

BERSYUKUR ... Wakil-wakil jemaat memotong kek ulang tahun bersama Uskup Agung Simon Poh dan Fr Jepy tentang sejarah jemaat Katolik jamuan makan tengah hari cara dalam daerah Saratok dan “potluck” yang disediakan oleh seterusnya pembinaan Pusat jemaat St Ignatius.

Parti Pra-Krismas untuk kanak-kanak Taska St Anthony

MUKAH — Taska St Anthony Mukah meraikan Krismas lebih awal tahun ini dengan mengadakan Majlis Pra-Krismas di hadapan taska tersebut pada 18 November lepas.

Seramai 26 kanak-kanak dan ibu bapa mereka serta kakitangan taska meraikan majlis tersebut.

Sebuah sketsa Krismas yang dilakonkan oleh kanakkanak taska memeriahkan majlis tersebut.

Selepas sketsa, nyanyian lagu Krismas oleh belia Gereja St Peter & St Paul disusuli acara memotong kek Krismas.

Pope Francis: Misa adalah untuk Ekaristi, bukan gambar.

KOTA VATIKAN — Pada 8 November lalu, Pope Francis menegur mereka yang menghabiskan masa dalam Misa dengan bercakap kepada orang lain, melihat telefon mereka atau malah mengambil gambar sewaktu liturgi kepausan, dan berkata gangguan ini mencuri tumpuan dari “hati Gereja”, iaitu Ekaristi.

“Misa bukan satu pertunjukan: ia adalah tempat kita berjumpa dengan kesengsaraan dan kebangkitan Tuhan,” kata paus. “Tuhan ada di sini bersama kita, hadir. Banyak kali kita pergi ke sana, kita lihat keadaan dan berbual di kalangan kita ketika paderi merayakan Ekaristi … Tetapi ia adalah Tuhan!”

Khususnya Francis mengecam penggunaan telefon bimbit untuk mengambil gambar di Misa kepausan.

Pada satu detik sewaktu Misa, paderi kata, “kita angkat hati kita”, katanya.

“Dia tidak kata, ‘Kita angkat telefon kita untuk mengambil gambar’!”

“Ia adalah satu perkara buruk!

Dan saya beritahu anda bahawa ia membuatkan saya rasa begitu sedih apabila saya merayakan Misa di sini di Piazza atau Basilika dan saya melihat begitu ramai mengangkat telefon bimbit, bukan hanya jemaat sahaja, malah segelintir paderi dan uskup.”

Sewaktu audiens umum, Pope Francis berkata Ekaristi akan menjadi tumpuan baharu bagi katekesis mingguan beliau pada tahun ini, kerana “ia amat penting bagi kita orang

Sama seperti Rasul Thomas meminta untuk melihat dan menyentuh luka Yesus selepas kebangkitanNya, kita memerlukan perkara yang sama: “untuk melihatNya dan menyentuhNya agar dapat mengenaliNya.” Dengan cara ini, Sakramen memenuhi

“keperluan manusiawi” kita, kata beliau.

Dan dalam Ekaristi khususnya, kita menemui cara yang istimewa untuk bertemu dengan Tuhan dan kasihNya. Majlis Vatikan Kedua diilhamkan oleh keinginan untuk membantu umat Kristian memahami keindahan pertemuan dalam Ekaristi dengan jauh lebih baik, ujar beliau. Inilah sebabnya kenapa “ia adalah perlu untuk mulamula melaksanakan, dengan bimbingan Roh Kudus, pembaharuan liturgi yang memadai”.

Tema utama yang ditekankan di Vatikan II adalah formasi jemaat dari segi liturgi, yang menurut Francis adalah juga tujuan siri katekesis yang beliau mulakan sekarang: untuk membantu orang “berkembang dalam pengetahuan tentang pemberian hebat ini yang Tuhan telah berikan kepada kita dalam Ekaristi”.

Sebagai nota sampingan, Francis bertanya sama ada orang pernah memerhatikan atau tidak bagaimana kanak-kanak membuat tanda salib dengan ‘huru-hara’ sewaktu Misa, menggerakkan tangan mereka di seluruh dada mereka, dan meminta orang ramai untuk mengajar kanakkanak membuat tanda salib dengan baik.

“Kita perlu mengajar kanak-kanak untuk membuat tanda salib dengan baik,” katanya, dan menegaskan ini adalah cara Misa bermula, kerana sama seperti Misa bermula dengan cara ini, “demikian juga dengan kehidupan, demikian juga dengan hari”.

Ketika menyimpulkan renungan beliau mengenai Misa dan Ekaristi, Pope Francis berkata beliau berharap menerusi pelajaran mingguan yang ringkas ini, semua orang akan menemui semula keindahan yang “tersembunyi di dalam perayaan Ekaristi, dan apabila didedahkan, akan memberi makna sepenuhnya kepada kehidupan semua orang”.

Paroki St Jude lancar perayaan Jubili Emas

• Bersambung dari ms27 Selain memanjatkan doa Novena kepada St Jude, aktiviti lain semasa Novena termasuk puji dan sembah, eksposisi Sakramen Maha Kudus dan ceramah.

Antara paderi dan jemaat awam yang membahagikan pengalaman mereka dalam ceramah adalah Fr Berkmans, Father Galvin Ngumbang, Father John Chong, Father Robert Jissem, Father Paul Herry, Dr Margaret Chan dan Uskup Agung Simon Poh. Keseluruhan ceramah tertumpu kepada tema Jubili Emas Paroki, “Bersamasama kita mendirikan Kerajaan Allah: Semua pengikut Kristus bersatu hati dengan fikiran” (Kisah Para Rasul

4:32).

Pada 28 Oktober, iaitu hari kesembilan Novena, aktiviti senamrobik diatur oleh Ministri Belia Paroki (PYM) pada sebelah pagi disusuli acara sukaneka untuk muridmurid sekolah.

Upacara meletakkan kalungan bunga di Tugu Peringatan ‘Babuk’ Father Leopold Van Rooyen turut diadakan.

Pada sebelah petang hari yang sama, Doa Novena kepada Saint Jude disusuli Misa Kudus yang dipimpin oleh Uskup Agung Simon Poh. Pada penghujung Misa Kudus, Uskup Agung Simon melancarkan Jubili Emas Paroki

St Jude.

Beliau menyerahkan sepanduk dan ‘Doa Jubili Emas Paroki’ kepada Rektor Fr Berkmans dan 48 pengerusi KGK. Selepas Misa Kudus, semua dijemput ke jamuan kesyukuran di Dewan Terbuka Gereja St Jude.

Pada 29 Oktober, Uskup Agung Simon Poh memberi Sakramen Penguatan kepada 36 calon penguatan.

Dalam homili, beliau mengingatkan jemaat, khasnya calon Sakramen Penguatan, untuk lebih mementingkan Tuhan Yesus dalam kehidupan mereka sebagai orang Kristian daripada mementingkan harta-benda duniawi.

Nurulla berkata Pope Francis menyuarakan rasa simpati.

“Beliau berkata beliau akan berdoa kepada Allah,” katanya.

Yakin pemimpin agama itu dapat membantu bangsa Rohingya, dia berkata, “Beliau seorang manusia yang damai.

Saya harap Allah akan mendengar doa beliau. Semua kami berdoa untuk krisis kami.”

Nurulla kemudian mengetuai doa, dan menjadi sangat emosional.

Shyada Khaton dengan tangisan

berkata, “Suami saya dibunuh oleh tentera Myanmar. Saya tidak berdaya dengan empat anak saya. Saya makan daun pokok ketika kami lari dari Myanmar. Kami tidak akan melupai penderitaan kami.”

Kerajaan Bangladesh mengatur pertemuan itu dengan bantuan Caritas Bangladesh, yang membantu masyarakat Rohingya. Sejak dua bulan lalu, ia sudah menyediakan makanan untuk 70,000 orang Rohingya dan barubaru ini, ia telah memulakan program kebersihan dan pemulihan bagi mereka.
