O

nce again, all Malaysians come together to commemorate, this time, the 64th Merdeka Day and the 58th Malaysia Day. The celebrations this year will, however, be very much subdued, yet the significance of these national dates that unite the nation should not be ignored. The virulent and unrelenting Covid-19 has been with us on our shores for much of 18 months now. Standing together Malaysians have not been defeated by the ravages of this pandemic. On the other hand, it has brought us closer across all divides to bear each other’s pain and losses. We have stood with the front-liners who have put themselves in the forefront to meet the peculiar challenges encountered. Many others have worked tirelessly to bring relief and comfort to those in need.

We thank God for all fellow Malaysians who have sacrificially rallied to the call of the times. To control the spread of the deadly virus should be the foremost national priority, next to offsetting the impact that it has had on our economy overall and even the personal livelihood of many. We must be committed to be vigilant and resilient for the general wellbeing of all in our nation. Efforts to vaccinate the whole population must be earnestly supported. Christians have joined hands with people of other faith traditions and secular organisations, to bring relief, in kind and financially, to lessen the burden faced by our fellow Malaysians during this

unprecedented period. As Churches, let us continue to extend the love of God, especially to the less fortunate, the vulnerable, the migrants, in the localities and amidst the communities we are placed in. Let us also uphold in our prayers our national leaders, including our new Prime Minister, all health personnel, and governmental agencies, that they may all be guided and protected by God. M E S S AG E From Archbishop Simon Poh Dear brothers and sisters, The Season of Creation has arrived. The World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation falls on 1 September. This began in 1989 for the Orthodox Christians who began their new year that day with a commemoration of how God created the world. The World Council of Churches extended the celebration to 4 October. In ecumenical solidarity, Pope Francis declared the Season of Creation from 1 September – 4 October in 2015. For Catholics, we celebrate the great feast of St Francis of Assisi, the father of the Franciscans on 4 October. Assisi is a small medieval town built on a hill, about 3 hours’ journey from Rome. Assisi is my favourite town in Italy which I often visited when I was studying or visiting Rome. I recall walking beside the sunflowers in the field on the road going up to Assisi; the olive groves on the way to San Damiano Church that St Francis rebuilt, and the beautiful surrounding farms. Walking on the cobbled streets that St Francis himself had walked, I could sense the peace of Assisi and being close to nature just around the town. It would not be hard to imagine St Francis singing praises to God. In fact, the first Italian poetry was attributed to him. This is the famous hymn: “The Canticle of the Sun”. Below is the musical rendition, composed by a Franciscan Sebastian Temple, that we have often sung in Church here: Be praised, Most High, Almighty Lord Yours the blessings and glory be. Only honour belongs to you for all eternity. Be praised, Lord of the creature world, And first Sir Brother Sun. Blessed men suffering peacefully, They shall not cry in vain. Saint Francis praises God for all the blessings in nature. His deeper connection with creation and all God’s creatures is expressed personally as “Brother Fire,” “Brother Sun” and “Sister Moon’ and even death is embraced as “Sister Death.” St Francis of Assisi is indeed our Patron Saint of Ecology.

Do you know that Pope Francis’ new papal encyclical, Laudato Si’ is inspired directly by St Francis of Assisi? The title “LAUDATO SI’, mi Signore” means “Praise be to you , my Lord” which is the very first line of the hymn composed by St Francis of Assisi around 1224. Pope Francis wrote an ecological papal encyclical “Laudato Si’ mi Signore” on the Care of our Common Home in 2015 which gave the Catholic Church a great vision and impetus towards Justice for Creation and Ecological Spirituality. On 1 September last week, the Catholic Church in Malaysia launched a whole year of ecological conversion with the second Year of PROTEC—Protect our Earth, Protect our Children. “Choose life that you and your children may live.” (Deut 30:19) Our first campaign last year was aimed at reducing the consumption of electricity. We are seeking to reduce the carbon Book available at footprints in our daily life. For this second RM4.00 year campaign from 1 September 2021 – 31 August 2022, all Catholics are invited to: “Cut down Meat, Dairy and Food Waste”. • Eat more local plant-based food (reduce imported food). • Reduce consumption of meat. • Do not waste food. 1-Hour-A-Day Prayer Session for Healing, Hope and Mercy KUCHING — The Archdiocese of Kuching will be launching a special online 1-HR-A-Day Prayer Session on Tuesday, 14 September 2021, the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. The Legionaries and prayer groups from the Archdiocese will lead these sessions scheduled to take place daily at 3.00 pm—the hour of mercy, when Jesus died on the Cross and the Father revealed his mercy to the world. For almost 19 months since March 2020, many people have had to endure long periods of lockdown, voluntarily or otherwise. The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted lives, particularly in areas concerning the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical well being of those in quarantine, with health issues, or having to stay at home. Kuching Archbishop Simon Poh is concerned that there are many people who do not know where or who to turn to in such times of need. “We want to let them know they are not alone. Jesus is always there.” In quoting (Matthew 18: 20) “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them,” the Archbishop said the group prayer sessions will give assurance to these people. Should the need arise, the younger generation can always assist their

KUCHING — The Emmaus Servant Community at Blessed Sacrament Church Parish remains true and committed to its mission statement to Love & Serve. In spite of the many lockdowns because of the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020, the weekly Emmaus prayer meetings resumed in the last few months of 2020, via Zoom. Online ‘pray over’ sessions after these meetings, commenced a few months ago, with the inaugural ‘ministering night’ held last April. It has been the Community’s practice to invite the parish rector who assumes the position of Head Shepherd of

Emmaus Community, to give talks at prayer meetings. Emmaus is grateful to its new shepherd, Fr Patrick Heng who has, over the past three months, shown his commitment to his new flock with his interesting reflections on the Scripture Reading of The Pharisees and the Tax Collector; a Talk on St Joseph in conjunction with the Year of St Joseph, and topping it off with a delightful insight of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter PATRIS CORDE (With a Father’s Heart) on 25 August. Regional Bishops to issue pastoral letter for Synod launch

KUALA LUMPUR — To make the synodality desired by Pope Francis since the beginning of his pontificate concrete and visible, the next Synod of Bishops, scheduled for October 2023, will not only be celebrated in the Vatican but in each Church of the five continents, following a three-year itinerary divided into three phases: diocesan (17 October to September 2022), continental (September 2022 to June 2023) and universal (October 2023). “The fullness of the synodal process can only truly exist if the local churches are involved in that process,” states the new synodal itinerary in a document approved by the Pope. The synodal path will begin at the Vatican, in the presence of the Pope, on 9 and 10 October, 2021 with a time for encounter and

All three are encouraging a synodal process for the local Church. If the process is well lived out, the local Churches will see a greater commitment from the laity, religious and clergy. Youth Involvement The youth and campus ministry will be having a youth assembly before the Synod. For the journey of the cross in the dioceses, the youth will be involved. Likewise, the youth members will be involved in the PMPC and Synod process so there is synchronicity. All dioceses may include the youth offices in the planning of the synod. The bishops affirmed the importance of the participation

Stories of trials and triumph at monthly Rosary Meet BUTTERWORTH — The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary/Sts Chastan and Imbert parish’s August Rosary meet included a meditation on the pandemic desert experience and testimonies from parishioners. The first by Valentine Dass was on his experience of contracting COVID-19 as well as his recovery and healing. During the very trying and scary time, he shared that God’s assurance and favour never left him and his family. He recalled the day he developed a high fever and was abruptly awakened from his sleep at midnight. He prayed with Scripture and sang hymns of praise for two hours, which led to a great sense of peace. The next day his fever broke. Valentine said that he realised that praying with the Word of God is extremely powerful. “There is a huge difference when you pray with the words of promise that God has given us,” he said. He added that he clung firmly to the words in Jeremiah 29:12–

14 throughout his illness. Jacqueline Lourdes then led the attendees in a reflection on the Israelites’ desert journey. They reflected on the times when God’s presence and providence were questioned and the many hurdles encountered on the way to the Promised Land. Parallels were drawn to our current experience with the pandemic and how we can find great comfort in the words of Scripture that whatever His children face, whether thousands of years ago or today, God is faithful and is with us every step of the way. Next, Matron Stella Roseline shared her experiences managing a team of nurses at a district hospital and a quarantine centre. It has been a long journey through the desert, and has been especially difficult in recent months with cases remaining high and becoming more severe. Bishop Paul reminded us of how we are God’s people— He sees us as sons and daughters, not rogues. (Isaiah 63:7–9). To be clothed in God’s love by living in sincere compassion, kindness and humility with one another, treating each other with gentleness and patience (Colossians 3:12–17). That our loving God does not want us to worry as He provides and we should avoid causing worry upon others (Luke 12:22– 31). The slogan of ‘Malaysia Cares’ or ‘Malaysia Prihatin’ will remain a mere slogan unless we make it come alive by practising borderless caring—care that does not discriminate by how we look, the way we speak or what we believe. Bishop Paul continued by challenging us in the way we care for the environment by going beyond physical and material needs. Bishop in fact calls us to go to WAR! Go against wastage. Against abuses. Against ravaging resources. The care and preservation of Mother Earth is a mission for all, every Malaysian, every family, every kampung… right up to the highest institutions—a united mission. Celestine Sarah, a working mother, spoke about how she has been juggling work and family life. While she has always worked remotely, doing so during this pandemic has been a different ball game. The workload has increased and there has been no boundary between work

and personal time. She found herself constantly responding to customers outside office hours. This left her stressed, tired and unproductive. Her prayer life suffered too. She was also ridden with guilt for not paying enough attention to her children and felt ashamed for failing to set a good example for them. Sarah decided to make some changes. She made it a point to wake up earlier to begin the day with prayer. She noticed that after a week of doing so she felt more refreshed and was able to better control her emotions. “It’s a minor initiative but I feel more positive now,” shared Sarah. Hundreds attend virtual Life in the Spirit Seminar

KOTA KINABALU — Perhaps, one common question we ask each other in these pandemic days is, “When will all this end?” From one lockdown after another, our Church has now been closed for more than three months. No ministries or groups can meet physically and to grow spiritually together as communities. From 4-25 August, the Light of Jesus Christ Covenant Community took their first initiative to run a virtual Life in the Spirit Seminar via Zoom. As this was considered something done to “test the waters” and to see how feasible this is, the organisers did not expect many to register for it. However, a staggering number of approximately 450 people from various countries and states from Qatar, Australia, to West Malaysia and Sarawak registered for the online seminar. The virtual sessions were held on Wednesday and Sunday nights, beginning with a time of praise and worship followed by the session and a testimony each night. Then participants gathered virtually with their respective sharing groups on Monday nights to share on the sessions that have been given. The sessions that were given throughout the seminar touched on the Lordship of Jesus in

our lives, God’s love, God’s salvific plan for mankind, new life in the Spirit, baptism of the Holy Spirit and ended with the final session on growth and transformation—a session encouraging participants to continue to live a life guided by the Holy Spirit and fuelled by the Sacraments of the Church. The seminar ended with the Holy Eucharist celebrated virtually by Fr Paul Lo, rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral. In his homily, he emphasised on the importance of the Holy Spirit in our lives and in the parish life. He also went on to share on to encourage everyone not to be like the scribes and Pharisees in the Gospel who observed the law of God perfectly, but never allowed the love of God to touch their hearts. “The Pharisees and scribes were considered very holy people. They were not bad people. We should observe the commandments of God, but also allow God’s love to touch our hearts, so that we can be more compassionate towards others,” Fr Lo said. VATICAN CITY — As the Church begins the annual Season of Creation on 1 September, Pope Francis is inviting everyone to pray for “an environmentally sustainable lifestyle”. In The Pope Video for the month of September, he held up the example of young people who are environmentally conscious. “It makes me very happy to see that young people have the courage to undertake projects for environmental and social improvement, since the two go together,” he said. Reflection on our impact on the planet Pope Francis added that adults can learn much from young people, since they are often at the forefront of issues “related to care for the planet.” “Let us take advantage of their example and reflect on our lifestyle, especially during these moments of health, social and environmental crisis,” he said. We should take the opportunity to reflect on “the way we eat, consume, travel, or the way we

Pope Francis urges people to get vaccinated against Covid-19 VATICAN CITY — The Pope has joined his voice to those of Bishops across North and South America to urge people to get jabbed against Covid-19. In a video message produced in conjunction with the Ad Council, Pope Francis praised the work of researchers and scientists in producing safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines. “Thanks to God’s grace and to the work of many, we now have vaccines to protect us from Covid-19,” he said in the video released on Wednesday. He added that vaccines “bring hope to end the pandemic, but only if they are available to all and if we collaborate with one another.” Vaccination is an act of love Pope Francis went on to say that getting a Covid jab that is “authorized by the respective authorities” is an “act of love.” Helping other do the same, he said, is also an act of love. “Love for oneself, love for our families and friends, and love for all peoples. Love is also social and political.” The Pope noted that social and political love is built up through “small, individual gestures capable of transforming and improving societies.” “Getting vaccinated is a simple yet profound way to care for one another, especially the most vulnerable,” he said.

Pope Francis then prayed to God that “each one of us can make his or her own small gesture of love.” “No matter how small, love is always grand,” he said. “Small gestures for a better future.” ‘Strength of faith’ The Pope was joined in the video by several Cardinals and Archbishops from across the Americas. Eight new Jesuit priests ordained in Yogyakarta JAKARTA, INDONESIA — Archbishop Robertus Rubiyatmoko of Semarang ordained eight Jesuit priests yesterday in Yogyakarta’s Saint Anthony of Padua Church, Central Java province. This is the largest priestly ordination in recent years for the Indonesian Jesuit Province (Provindo). The new priests come from various Indonesian dioceses (Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, Pangkalpinang and Lampung on the island of Sumatra, Jakarta, and the Archdiocese of Semarang). In his homily, Archbishop Rubiyatmoko addressed the new priests, saying: “Each of you is challenged to become a man of the Church, a man of prayer and a man of evangelisation.” For his part, Fr Benedictus Hari Juliawan, superior of the Provindo, said: “As Jesuits and men sent on a sacred mission, each of you is expected to show a joyful heart and spirit to perform

your tasks, wherever you are sent.” Fr Juliawan then gave a new pastoral assignment to Fr Philipus Bagus Widyawan from the parish of St Mary’s Bayat in Klaten, the first Jesuit to become parish priest in the Diocese of Ketapang. Fr Widyawan will serve in the parish of St Martin’s in Balai Berkuak, a remote location in the Diocese of Ketapang, West

Kalimantan, where he will pay special attention to the city of Botong, which could become a new parish. Since 1910, when Christianity first arrived in the area with lay missionaries from Shantou, mainland China, the Diocese of Ketapang has been largely isolated due to inaccessible roads, lack of electricity, and poor

communications. It takes seven to eight hours to travel by car from Ketapang to Balai Berkuak; from there it takes another three to four hours to reach Botong. “Those who go to Botong must have a strong motivation and great courage, both during the journey inland and across the river,” said Fr Simon Yogatomo, secretary of the Diocese of Ketapang. “You have to carry two, three jerrycans with petrol on the trip because there is no gas station,” explained Markus Mardius, a native Dayak from Ketapang. Ethnic Dayak are often forced to leave their villages to attend schools in the cities. Philippine Church rallies support for Season of Creation VATICAN CITY — The Catholic Church in the Philippines has reiterated its commitment to Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato si, urging all to join the upcoming Season of Creation and sign a petition to world leaders to take action for a “healthy planet and healthy people”. “Code Red for humanity” Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), made the call in a pastoral letter on Tuesday. THE SACRAMENTS is a series of teachings by Fr Patrick Heng Lesson 6 – The Sacrament of Marriage (Part 1) In the Catechism of the Catholic Church no.1210, it says “Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Confirmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life.”

The seven sacraments can be separated into three groups: 1. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION which will bring a person into the full life of Christ (Baptism, Eucharist, Confirmation) 2. SACRAMENTS OF HEALING which heal both the soul and the body (Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick) 3. SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT in which a person responds to a specific call of God (Marriage, Holy Orders) The Sacraments at the Service of Communion The Sacraments of Christian Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist—confer on a person the vocation of all Christ’s faithful which is a vocation to holiness and to the mission of evangelising the world. These sacraments confer the graces needed for a Spirit-filled life. As Catholics journey toward the heavenly homeland, they are helped by the two sacraments at the service of communion: Holy Orders and Matrimony. The purpose of these two sacraments, Holy Orders and Matrimony, enable individuals to direct their lives in a sacramental way for the salvation of others. Through service to others, they build up the Body of Christ while contributing to their own personal salvation. The Sacrament of Matrimony (CCC 1601) The matrimonial covenant is a bond by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership for the whole of their lives. It is by its nature ordered towards the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring. A marriage between baptised persons has been raised by Christ the Lord to the dignity of a sacrament. The origin of the sacrament Sacred Scriptures begin with the creation of man and woman in the image and likeness of God and concludes with a vision of “the wedding-feast of the Lamb”. (Rev. 19:7, 9) God himself is the author of marriage. Man is created in the image and likeness of God who is himself love. Since God created him man and woman, their mutual love for each other becomes an image of the absolute and unfailing love with which God loves man. And this love which God blesses is intended to be fruitful and to be realised in the common work of watching over creation: “And God blessed them, and God said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it’.” (Gen 1:28) Due to sin, the union of man and woman has always been threatened by discord, a spirit of domination, infidelity, jealousy, and conflicts that can escalate into hatred and separation. To heal the wounds of sin, man and woman need the help of the grace that God in his infinite mercy never refuses them. Without his help man and woman cannot achieve the union of their lives for which God created them “in the beginning”. In the Old Testament, God’s covenant with Israel is seen as an image of an exclusive and faithful married love, a nuptial covenant. The nuptial covenant between God and his people Israel had prepared the way for the new and everlasting covenant in which the Son of God (Jesus), by becoming incarnate and giving his life, has united to himself in a certain way all mankind saved by him, thus preparing for “the wedding-feast of the Lamb”. (Rev. 19: 7)

In his preaching Jesus unequivocally taught the original meaning of the union of man and woman as the Creator willed it from the beginning, “what therefore God has joined together, let no man put asunder” (Mt 19:6). By coming to restore the original order of creation disturbed by sin, Jesus himself gives the strength and grace to live marriage in the new dimension of the Reign of God. It is by following Christ, renouncing themselves, and taking up their crosses that spouses will be able to “receive” the original meaning of marriage and live it with the help of Christ (Mt 19:11). This grace of Christian marriage is a fruit of Christ’s cross, the source of all Christian life. The entire Christian life bears the mark of the spousal love of Christ and the Church. Christian marriage is an efficacious sign, the sacrament of the covenant of Christ and the Church. Since it signifies and communicates grace, marriage between baptised persons is a true sacrament of the New Covenant. A brief history of the sacrament First three centuries For the first three centuries Christians followed the social customs and practices of their time and place. The marriage practice among the Greeks and Romans (the Greco-Latin culture) then consisted of two distinct and separate moments in time: betrothal and marriage. The Letter to Diognetus (5, 6) in the first century states that Christians followed these same rites except for anything that might be contrary to the mentality and moral demands of Christianity. For the Christians, they based their understanding of marriage from the Scriptures especially in the teachings of Jesus and the letter of St Paul. Fourth to the Tenth century This period marked the continual struggle Christian understanding of marriage had with the social customs and practices of its time. For most of the medieval period, marriage belonged to the private sphere of the family, not the public sphere of the church. Marriages then were often arranged by parents or families and involved an exchange of property and a linkage of families. Therefore, marriages were celebrated, not in the church, but in private homes, sometimes with, but often without, the formal blessing of the Church or the presence of a priest. The struggle for the Church, then, was to take marriage from the home and to bring it into the church. Another struggle that the church faced then was to uphold the ideals of marriage in a world where illicit, irregular, secretive or clandestine marriages prevailed. This struggle was slowly overcome in the later centuries. On the marriage practices of its time, there are clear evidence of typically Christian elements. These typically Christian elements were (1) a blessing in the Church and (2) the use of the veil. There was no clear evidence of other elements used. However, in the earlier writings of Tertullian ( c. 220) he mentioned the use of an iron ring without precious stones, the use of the veil, joining of the right hand, and the kiss of spouses. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Catholic Church celebrates today the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary on its traditional fixed date of September 8, nine months after the December 8 celebration of her Immaculate Conception as the child of Saints Joachim and Anne. The circumstances of the Virgin Mary’s infancy and early life are not directly recorded in the Bible, but other documents and traditions describing the circumstances of her birth are cited by some of the earliest Christian writers from the first centuries of the Church. These accounts, although not considered authoritative in the same manner as the Bible, outline some of the Church’s traditional beliefs about the birth of Mary. The “Protoevangelium of James,” which was probably put into its final written form in the early second century, describes Mary’s father Joachim as a wealthy member of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Joachim was deeply grieved, along with his wife Anne, by their childlessness. “He called to mind Abraham,” the early Christian writing says, “that in the last day

God gave him a son Isaac.” Joachim and Anne began to devote themselves extensively and rigorously to prayer and fasting, initially wondering whether their inability to conceive a child might signify God’s displeasure with them. As it turned out, however, the couple were to be blessed even more abundantly than Abraham and Sarah, as an angel revealed to Anne when he appeared to her and prophesied that all generations would honor their future child: “The Lord has heard your prayer, and you shall conceive, and shall bring forth, and your seed shall be

Words that build and words that destroy There are words that build people up and there are words that destroy people. Words of kindness and encouragement can help a great deal in building up people’s self-esteem and motivate them to be better persons. On the other hand, there are words of criticism and anger that can destroy a person’s confidence and cause discouragement. It is very important for school teachers to use more words of praise and inspiration with their students in order to boost learning. In the same way too, parents can do with more words and actions of encouragement rather than discouragement with their children. Words that build are lacking in our lives whereas words that destroy are plentiful. More often than not, when we want to praise or encourage someone, we usually use less words to do so. The words will either be very

few or curt or may even sound fake. On the contrary, words that destroy tend to be many and they are like a word diarrhea—stinging words flowing freely. In today’s Gospel, the words of acknowledgement from Peter are very few after Jesus asks that crucial—“Who do people say I am?” Peter answers, “You are the Christ.” The sentence is just four words! It is actually just “You = Christ.” However, I can imagine the remonstration of Peter is long with many words after Jesus says openly that he is destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death. Peter’s words of discouragement would have been many and spoken with rashness. And the rebuke of Jesus is equally long, “Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.” This exchange of words

For the greater glory of God between Peter and Jesus can be demotivating for Peter. He has just praised and acknowledged Jesus as the Christ and the next moment he is called “Satan” by Jesus! Words play an important role in life as we have seen, but actions must follow those words. That’s why Jesus stresses the point right after what he says about himself going through suffering and death, “If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me.” It is the action of taking up one’s cross and following in Jesus’ footsteps that must go in tandem with the words of acknowledging Jesus as the Christ. Words of praise and encouragement must come with actions that manifest the meaning of those words. When I praise someone, I must mean it; I don’t say it just to please that person or merely to encourage. That person deserves my praise. The words of Peter and our own acknowledgement of Jesus as the Christ entails carrying our cross after Jesus. Just as Jesus went

through suffering and pain, so do we. Our praise of Jesus does not end with the words, it is followed with the action of carrying our own cross in his footsteps. In the second reading, James accentuates the point that faith comes with good works. If anyone is in need of clothes or food and we only say to them, “I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty,” without giving them these bare necessities of life, then those words are pointless. This example from James shows that many words of encouragement that are not followed with actions are empty. These words, although encouraging, are not words that build people up. Rather they may even destroy people. We can ask ourselves do we use more words that build or words that destroy? And when we do use more words that build, do we really mean them by manifesting those words in action?

Alumni Kuching Archdiocesan Youth Apostolate Ke-27 (AKAYA-27) telah menganjurkan satu perjumpaan dalam talian pada 21 Ogos 2021 dengan menggunakan platform Zoom Meeting. Program selama dua jam ini disertai 37 peserta AKAYA-27 dan juga beberapa orang fasilitator, termasuk Fr Ramon Borja SDB, Sr Martina SSFS, Sr Evelyn SSFS, Br Davie Entalai dan Br Henry Lawrence. Karen Bulan Jeffrey, selaku koordinator program ini, menyatakan tujuan program WHAT’S UP! AKAYA-27 diadakan adalah untuk menghimpunkan semula atau mengadakan reunion selepas tiga tahun tidak berjumpa. Program waktu malam itu diselitkan dengan aktiviti seperti permainan dan sesi perkongsian Injil dalam kumpulan-kumpulan kecil. Walaupun tidak dapat berjumpa secara bersemuka pada masa kini, namun hal ini tidak mematahkan semangat para peserta untuk berjumpa dan berdoa secara online. Karen juga mendapat inspirasi untuk mengatur program ini setelah dia mengikuti program ALPHA Online yang dianjurkan oleh CVS Young, Puncak Alam & Shah Alam.

Manakala bagi sesi perkongsian AlKitab pada malam itu, petikan diambil daripada Yohanes 6:51: “Akulah roti hidup yang turun dari Syurga. Sesiapa yang memakan roti ini akan hidup selamanya; dan roti ini, yang akan Aku tawarkan agar dunia dapat hidup, adalah daging-Ku.” Meskipun tidak ramai peserta & fasilitator AKAYA-27 yang hadir pada malam itu disebabkan oleh masalah talian internet yang kurang baik, pihak penganjur melihat sambutan ini sebagai satu permulaan yang baik. Memetik ucapan Maria Amella, koordinator belia KAYC, Karen berharap para belia mempunyai inisiatif sendiri untuk menganjurkan program bagi pembangunan rohani belia. “Sekiranya tidak pasti bagaimana untuk mengembangkan atau merealisasikan idea anda, hubungi KAYC dan kami sentiasa terbuka untuk mendengar, bekerjasama atau berkolaborasi dengan para belia,” katanya. Secara peribadi, perjumpaan ini sangat bererti kerana secara tidak sengaja, ia memberi saya ruang dan peluang bagi memperbaharui diri saya sendiri melalui perkongsian refleksi berdasarkan ayat daripada bacaan Injil pada malam itu. Perkongsian Injil merupakan aktiviti mingguan kami semasa di seminari tetapi setelah tamat pengajian di seminari, ini merupakan perkongsian yang pertama selepas kali terakhir kami melakukannya pada bulan April. Ini juga merupakan perkongsian pertama saya sebagai orang biasa dan bukan lagi sebagai seminarian. SJPS teams emerge national champ, first runner-up in SPM Bible Knowledge Quiz 2021

The 3 teams from SJPS with their teachers. KUCHING — The finals of the 25th National SPM Bible Knowledge Quiz was held via Zoom on 14 August 2021. Ten teams made it to the finals. It was an oral quiz with two participants in each team. There were three teams from St Joseph’s Private School who represented Kuching Region. The others were SMK Methodist Sibu representing Miri/Sibu/Bintulu Region; SM St Patrick Tawau and SM Lok Yuk Kota Kinabalu representing Sabah/Labuan Region; SMJK Chung Ling and Penang Chinese Girls’ High School for Northern Region; St Francis Institution Melaka representing Southern Region; and Wesley Methodist School Kuala Lumpur (International) for Central Region. There was a total of 169 teams from all over Malaysia in the semifinals which was held online on 31 July 2021 using MCQ format (multiple-choice questions). Ms Moey Yoke Lai, former CEO of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) who is the adviser of the quiz, welcomed the finalists and guests at the beginning. She also prayed for a smooth running of the quiz. Next, Dato’ Dr Mah Hang Soon, the Deputy Minister of Education II gave a speech. He emphasised on the importance of the role of NGOs like the Federation of Christian Mission Schools Malaysia (FCMSM), in their contributions toward quality education in Malaysia. FCMSM is the organiser of this annual quiz. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the SPM National Bible Knowledge quiz. Praise and thanks be to Almighty God for sustaining this quiz for the past 25 years. This quiz is open to all students from Form 3 to 5, and

is based on the Bible Knowledge paper which is offered as an elective in SPM every year. This quiz is also endorsed by Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia. Eunice Wong and Natalie Song of St Joseph’s Private School emerged as the champion team in this year’s quiz while their school counterparts, Lau Zhi You and Ehlena Lau followed as the first runner-up team. Third placing went to Ivan Yap and Emery Edgar Kabi from SM St Patrick of Tawau. Comments from the Top 2 teams: “My partner and I headed into the quiz with many doubts and worries but now, I am beyond grateful and happy that everything we put into this was fruitful.” – Eunice Wong “Our success was not without tears, frustration and dedication, so I’m just really glad all our prayers and revisions paid off. Scoring A-levels amidst the pandemic KUCHING — Year 2020 and 2021 have been challenging for everyone especially all the students taking A-level examinations. Despite this, the students were able to overcome all the difficulties and did their best in the June 2021 series examinations. Highly motivated teachers were also the driving force that inspired them to achieve greater heights. Behind all this were supporting parents that made everything possible. Of the four students taking A-level examinations, Tara Jane Bhasker has achieved an outstanding result of 3A*1A. Two other students achieved a combination of grades from A*, A and B. All the students passed their A-levels. “Taking A-levels has been a challenging experience, but I am grateful for the constant guidance of the school and my beloved teachers. I am elated with the results I have achieved and look forward to what the future has in store for me,” Tara

LET'S TALK GRIEF KUCHING — EMPOWERED conducted a Facebook Live Session on 27 August 2021, featuring Claudia Law and Ralph Balan as speakers and Emmanuel Foong as host to discuss on GRIEF and what God desires for us. Claudia started the session by sharing about the psychological aspects of Grief. She explained that grieving is a process of reacting to a loss. She also added that loss can be categorised into physical loss (death) and symbolic loss (breakup, loss of friendship or as simple as loss of freedom to go out during this pandemic). They went on to discuss the five stages of grieving, which are summarised as follows: 1. Denial - State of refusing to accept the truth 2. Anger - Feeling of internal pain 3. Bargaining - The “What Ifs” 4. Depression - Facing the emotions head on 5. Acceptance - Acknowledging that it is okay to not be in control Aside from that, they advised viewers to be mindful with their words and behaviour around grieving friends or family members. They also reassured viewers that grieving is normal and that God is our source of hope and light.

A BIBLICAL WALK THROUGH THE MASS

KUCHING — After completing the five-part session on THE MASS: A Biblical Walk Through the Mass; Understanding What We Say and Do in the Liturgy by Edward Sri, EMPOWERED Ministry organised an IG Live Session on 6 August 2021 to discuss the many questions posed by participants. The guest speakers for the evening were Fr Galvin Richard Ngumbang and Deacon Mark Bonchol along with hosts Ann Marie and Francis Davin to discuss on The Mass and Catholicism. The session began with a short prayer and a series of Q&A’s from the audience and host. Here are the questions answered by Fr Galvin and Deacon Mark:

WHY SHOULD I STILL JOIN VIRTUAL MASS WHEN I CANNOT RECEIVE THE EUCHARIST? WON’T IT BE BETTER NOT TO JOIN THAN TO JOIN INCOMPLETE (“ALANG-ALANG”)? Even though we are not able to receive the Eucharist during this time, our hunger for the Eucharist is always present. Archbishop Simon Poh has announced that the people of Sarawak are exempted or obsolete from receiving the Eucharist because of the current situation. This is why we also pray the prayer of the Spiritual Communion during mass. The desire of communion is not a compensation for the Eucharist.

OUR YOUTH IS IN DANGER OF EMBRACING GENDER IDEOLOGY AND PRO LGBTQ CONTENT THAT IS PROPAGATED BY SOCIAL MEDIA. WHAT IS THE CHURCH STAND ON THIS?

The Church has its own standing. The church cannot force beliefs into youths. Youths need to discern and have their own “balance & check” between the beliefs of the church and self-beliefs. It is how you perceive it and what will you do about it (moral stance). The Church understands and shares the

WHY DO WE STILL NEED TO PRAY TO GOD WHEN HE KNOWS OUR NEEDS? We must first understand the meaning of Prayer. A prayer is a journey with God. We must also discover who God is in our life. Is He your friend? Is He your teacher? Your Guardian? By recognising and establishing a relationship with God, a prayer becomes a daily conversation with a friend instead of a chore. A prayer’s purpose is to align our will with the will of God. Hence, prayer is still important to establish a relationship with God.

It is against human nature. But then again, St Augustine teaches us to ‘hate the sin, love the sinner’. There is a need for us to distinguish between the person from the act. We shouldn’t shun and judge people of the community. Instead, we should show mercy, love and compassion towards them as God does. Pope Francis once said towards this issue, “who am I to judge people of this community?”

(梵蒂冈新闻网)教宗 方济各于2016年建立了圣座 平信徒、家庭和生命部,借 以整合圣座平信徒委员会和 圣座家庭委员会的职权与功 能。 促进生命和平信徒的 使徒工作,对青年和家庭的 牧灵关怀,以及支持人类生 命。这些是圣座平信徒、家 庭和生命部的工作指导纲 领。教宗方济各于2016年8 月15日以《殷勤的母亲》手 谕创立了圣座该部会,并在 这道以宗座牧函形式撰写的 手谕中表明,「殷勤的慈母 教会世代以来一直悉心照料 平信徒、家庭和生命,彰显 出慈悲救主对世人的爱」。 圣座及时促使各部会「适应 当今时代的情况及普世教会 的需要」,「尤其念及平信 徒、家庭和生命,愿意为它 们提供支持和帮助,使它们 在当今时代积极地为福音作 见证,传达救主的仁慈」。 圣座平信徒、家庭和生 命部的章程于2018年4月10日 通过试行,并于同年5月13日 生效。章程载明,圣座该部 会的宗旨包括促进并鼓励「

全台灣福傳大會閉幕 凝聚各教區智慧廣傳福音

(香港公教报讯)如何 鼓励疏远教会的教友返回堂 区?又如何加强工作福传?台 湾天主教会花了三年时间去收 集各教区的智慧,以一起构思 在现今社会中的福传对策。 台湾《天主教周报》报 导,在新型冠状病毒疫情下, 全台湾福传大会取消原订于 8月在台北举行的实体聚会, 改为8月7日在台北奉献闭幕弥 撒,并同时为各教区直播这台 弥撒,以庆祝过去三年的成

行动从教友开始。 虽然全台湾福传大会未 能按原先计划举行,但当地各 个教区以至堂区,都从2018至 2021年透过问卷调查去分析牧 民与福传状况,也透过总铎区 层面的会议,从下而上去提出 福传方案。 准备福传大会期间,主办 单位向各教区发表《台湾天主 教会堂区牧灵手册》草案,作 为大会的工作文件,内容涵盖 堂区牧灵工作的基本原则、慕 道、关顾疏离的教友等课题。 主办单位会汇集各教区 的讨论成果,让各教区加以执 行。 该工作文件提出了不少福 传建议,例如建议堂区订定长 期的牧灵福传计划;探访不来 堂区的教友并安排特别活动, 当中不应只着眼在宗教活动 上,而是能表现更多的社会特 色,例如为年轻人举办体育活 动。

第52屆國際聖體大會在布達佩斯揭幕

每天一小時為治愈、希望和慈悲祈禱 (古晋讯)古晋总教区 将于2021年9月14日星期二光 荣十字圣架庆日推展一项特 别的网上每天一小时的祈祷 节目。总教区的圣母军和祈 祷小组将带领这个每天下午 三点正---慈悲的钟点---当耶 稣死在十字架上,天父向世 界启示祂的慈悲。 自从2020年3月,近19个 月来,许多人自愿的或非自 愿的忍受着长时间的关闭。 新冠肺炎大流行已打乱了人 们的生活,特别是那些被隔 离者,因健康问题,或必须 留守在家里的人群,在属灵 的、精神上的、情绪上和身 体的健康方面。 古晋总教区傅云生总 主教关心有许多人在这样需 要帮助的时候不知道到哪里 或向谁求助。「我们要他们 知道,他们并不孤单。耶稣 一直都在。」总主教引述玛

话语有些是造就人,也有 些是摧毁性的。善意的话可以 大大地帮助建立人们的自信,激 励他们做更好的人。另一方面, 也有批判和气忿的话语可以摧毁 一个人的自信和使人气馁。学 校教师对他们的学生用更多称 赞和鼓励的话来激发学习非常 重要。同样的,家长们对他们 的子女可以用更多鼓励性的话 语和行动,而不用负面的。 我们生活中建树的话语很 缺少,摧毁性的话语却很多。 更甚的是,当我们要称赞或鼓 励某个人,我们通常用更少的 话语。所用的字眼不是很少就 是很生硬,甚至听起来很假。 相反的,摧毁性的字眼会很 多,好像是字眼的腹泻---插心 的话流泄不止。 今天的福音中,当耶稣问 伯多禄那个关键的问题「人们 说我是谁」时,伯多禄确认的 话很简短,他回答,「你是基 督。」答案只有四个字!实际 上只是「你=基督」。 尽管如此,当耶稣公开地 说祂必须受许多苦,被长老、司 祭长和经师弃绝,且要被杀害 后,我可以想象伯多禄的抗议 的话又多又长。伯多禄的泄气的 话原本很多而且鲁莽。而耶稣 责斥的话也同样长:「撒殚,退 到我后面去! 因为你所体会的, 不是天主的事,而是人的事。」 伯多禄和耶稣间的对话可使伯 多禄失去动力。他刚刚才确认 了耶稣为基督,而下一分钟他 就被耶稣称为「撒殚」。 由此可见,话语在我们生 命中扮演着一个重要的角色, 但那些话后面必须有行动跟 随。这就是为什么耶稣说祂必 须受苦和死亡之后所强调的,

「谁若愿意跟隨我,该弃绝 自己,背着自己的十字架, 跟隨我。」就是背起自己的 十字架跟随耶稣的步伐这个 动作必须和确认耶稣为基督 的话串起来。 称赞和鼓励的话必须 伴有显示那些话的意义的行 动。当我称赞某人,我必须 是诚心诚意的;我不能只为 要讨好,或是只是为鼓励那 人而说。那人堪当我的称 赞。伯多禄的话和我们自己 对耶稣是基督的确认包含了 背起我们的十字架跟随耶 稣。有如耶稣经历苦难,我 们也一样。我们对耶稣的赞 美不止于言语,跟着来的是 背起我们自己的十字架跟随 祂的步伐的行动。 在读经二中,雅各伯强 调,信德必须有行动。如果 有人需要衣服或食物,而我 们只是对他说,「你们平安 去吧!穿得暖暖的,吃得饱饱 的」,而没有给他们这些生 活所需,那么那些话都没有意 义。雅各伯说的这个例子显 示,一大推鼓励的话而没有 行动是空的。那些话,虽然 是鼓励的话,但不是造就人 的话。它甚至可能摧毁人。 我们可以问自己,我们 多用造就人的话还是摧毁人 的话?而当我们多用造就人 的话,我们是不是诚心诚意 的,并以行动来表示? Malaysia yang Bersatu, Berwaspada & Berdaya Tuhan Perutusan daripada Persatuan Kristian Malaysia (CFM)

Sekali lagi, rakyat Malaysia akan bersamasama memperingati Hari Kemerdekaan yang ke-64 dan Hari Malaysia yang ke58. Walaupun sambutan pada tahun ini tidak akan disambut secara gilang-gemilang, namun kepentingan tarikhtarikh yang telah menyatukan negara ini tidak harus diabaikan. Tanpa disedari, kemudaratan dan kesan berpanjangan Covid-19 sudah berada di dalam kehidupan kita selama 18 bulan. Namun, rakyat Malaysia masih bersama berdiri teguh dan tidak sama sekali mengalah kepada ancaman pandemik ini. Sebaliknya, keadaan ini telah menyatukan kita semua, merentasi semua jurang perbezaan, untuk bersama-sama menanggung penderitaan dan kehilangan yang dialami oleh setiap kita. Kita telah berdiri bersama dengan barisan hadapan yang telah meletakkan diri mereka di hadapan bagi menghadapi cabaran-cabaran yang luar biasa ini. Ramai lagi yang telah bertungkuslumus memberi bantuan serta pertolongan kepada

Sebagai Gereja-Gereja, marilah kita secara berterusan menyebarkan cintakasih Tuhan, terutamanya kepada mereka yang kurang bernasib baik, yang lemah, para pendatang asing, di dalam lokaliti dan di tengah-tengah masyarakat di mana juga kita sedang berada (Yakobus 1:27; Markus 12: 30–31) mereka yang memerlukan. Kita bersyukur kepada Tuhan untuk setiap rakyat Malaysia yang telah dengan rela berkorban menyahut seruan untuk menghulurkan pertolongan. Pengawalan penyebaran virus maut ini seharusnya menjadi agenda utama negara, disamping usaha-usaha untuk mengimbangi kesan pandemik ke atas keseluruhan ekonomi kita, serta juga pada kehidupan peribadi kita. Kita perlu komited untuk sentiasa berwaspada dan berdaya tahan demi kesejahteraan negara kita. Segala usaha untuk mevaksinkan setiap penduduk harus diberi sokongan yang bersungguh- sungguh. Umat Kristian telah berganding tangan bersama dengan mereka dari kepercayaan yang lain serta juga organisasiorganisasi sekular, menghulur bantuan, sama ada dalam bentuk

barangan keperluan mahupun kewangan, bagi meringankan beban yang ditanggung sesama rakyat Malaysia di dalam situasi yang belum pernah dialami sebelum ini. Sebagai Gereja-Gereja, marilah kita secara berterusan menyebarkan cintakasih Tuhan, terutamanya kepada mereka yang kurang bernasib baik, yang lemah, para pendatang asing, di dalam lokaliti dan di tengah-tengah masyarakat di mana juga kita sedang berada (Yakobus 1:27; Markus 12:30– 31). Dalam peristiwa ini juga, kita mengingati mereka yang telah kehilangan orang tersayang, terutamanya kanak-kanak yang telah kehilangan kedua-dua ibubapa mereka. SAKRAMEN ialah siri pelajaran oleh Fr Patrick Heng

Ajaran 6 – Sakramen Perkahwinan (Bahagian 1) Dalam Katekisme Gereja Katolik No. 1210, ia menyebut “Kristus menetapkan sakramen-sakramen bagi undang-undang baharu. Terdapat tujuh sakramen: Pembaptisan, Penguatan (atau ‘Chrismation’), Ekaristi, Pertaubatan, Pengurapan Orang Sakit, Pentahbisan, dan Perkahwinan. Tujuh sakramen tersebut menyentuh semua peringkat dan semua waktu penting dalam kehidupan Kristian: ia memberikan kelahiran dan peningkatan, penyembuhan dan misi kepada kehidupan keimanan Kristian. Maka itu, persamaan tertentu wujud di antara peringkatperingkat kehidupan semulajadi dengan peringkat-peringkat kehidupan rohani.” Tujuh sakramen boleh dibahagikan kepada tiga kumpulan: 1. SAKRAMEN-SAKRAMEN INISIASI yang akan membawa seseorang itu ke dalam kehidupan Kristus sepenuhnya (Pembaptisan, Ekaristi, Penguatan) 2. SAKRAMEN-SAKRAMEN PENYEMBUHAN yang akan menyembuhkan jiwa dan tubuh mereka (Rekonsiliasi/ Perdamaian, Pengurapan Orang Sakit) 3. SAKRAMEN-SAKRAMEN KOMITMEN di mana seseorang itu respon kepada panggilan Allah yang khusus (Perkahwinan, Pentahbisan) Sakramen-sakramen yang Melayan Komuni Sakramen-sakramen Inisiasi Kristian—Pembaptisan, Penguatan dan Ekaristi—memberikan kepada seseorang itu panggilan bagi semua umat Kristus iaitu panggilan kepada kekudusan dan misi untuk menginjili dunia. Sakramen-sakramen ini memberi rahmat yang diperlukan bagi kehidupan yang dipenuhi Roh Kudus. Ketika umat Katolik berjalan menuju tanah air syurgawi, mereka dibantu oleh dua sakramen yang melayan komuni: Kepaderian dan Perkahwinan. Tujuan dua sakramen ini, Kepaderian dan Perkahwinan, adalah untuk membolehkan seseorang individu itu mengarahkan kehidupan mereka dengan cara sakramental bagi menyelamatkan orang lain. Dengan melayan orang lain, mereka membina Tubuh Kristus dan pada waktu yang sama menyumbang kepada keselamatan mereka sendiri. Sakramen Perkahwinan (CCC 1601) Perjanjian perkahwinan merupakan satu ikatan di mana seorang lelaki dan seorang wanita mewujudkan di antara mereka satu perkongsian untuk sepanjang hidup mereka. Sifatnya diatur ke arah kebaikan suami isteri serta pembiakan dan pendidikan anakanak. Perkahwinan di antara orang-orang yang sudah dibaptis telah diangkat oleh Kristus Tuhan kepada martabat sakramen. Asal usul sakramen ini Kitab Suci bermula dengan penciptaan lelaki dan wanita menurut gambar dan rupa Allah dan berakhir dengan penglihatan “jamuan perkahwinan Anak Domba”. (Wahyu 19: 7, 9) Allah sendiri adalah penulis perkahwinan. Manusia dicipta menurut gambar dan rupa Allah yang merupakan kasih. Memandangkan Allah mencipta lelaki dan wanita, kasih mereka kepada satu sama lain menjadi imej kasih mutlak dan tidak pernah mengecewakan yang digunakan oleh Allah untuk mengasihi manusia. Dan kasih ini yang diberkati Allah memang dihasratkan untuk berhasil dan direalisasikan dalam kerja umum untuk mengawasi penciptaan: “Allah memberkati mereka, dan Allah berfirman kepada mereka: ‘Beranak-cuculah dan bertambah

ramai; penuhilah bumi dan taklukkanlah ia’”. (Kejadian Memandangkan Allah mencipta lelaki 1:28) Kerana dosa, kesatuan lelaki dan wanita, kasih dan wanita sentiasa diancam mereka kepada satu oleh perselisihan, roh dominasi, sama lain menjadi kecurangan, iri hati, dan konflik yang dapat bertambah imej kasih mutlak buruk menjadi kebencian dan dan tidak pernah pemisahan. Untuk memulihkan mengecewakan luka-luka dosa, lelaki dan wanita yang digunakan memerlukan bantuan rahmat yang tidak pernah dinafikan oleh Allah untuk oleh Allah kepada kita dalam mengasihi manusia. kerahiman-Nya yang tidak berkesudahan. Tanpa bantuan-Nya, lelaki dan wanita tidak dapat mencapai kesatuan hidup mereka yang menjadi sebab kenapa Allah mencipta mereka “pada mulanya”. Dalam Perjanjian Lama, perjanjian Allah dengan Israel dlihat sebagai imej kasih yang eksklusif dan setia dalam perkahwinan, satu perjanjian perkahwinan. Perjanjian perkahwinan di antara Allah dengan umat-Nya Israel telah menyediakan jalan bagi perjanjian baharu yang abadi di mana Putera Allah (Yesus), dengan menjadi manusia dan menyerahkan nyawa-Nya, telah menyatukan semua umat manusia yang diselamatkan-Nya, untuk menyediakan mereka bagi “jamuan perkahwinan Anak Domba”. (Wahyu 19: 7) Dalam khutbah-Nya, Yesus dengan jelas mengajar maksud sebenar kesatuan antara lelaki dan wanita seperti yang dikehendaki Pencipta dari mula lagi, “kerana itu apa yang telah dipersatukan Allah, tidak boleh diceraikan manusia”. (Matius 19:6) Dengan kedatangan-Nya untuk memulihkan susunan asal penciptaan yang dikacau oleh dosa, Yesus sendiri memberikan kekuatan dan rahmat untuk menjalani perkahwinan dalam dimensi baharu Pemerintahan Allah. Ia adalah dengan mengikut Yesus, menafikan diri, dan memikul salib baharulah suami isteri dapat “menerima”maksud asal perkahwinan dan menghidupkannya dengan bantuan Kristus (Matius 19:11). Rahmat perkahwinan Kristian ini adalah buah salib Kristus, sumber seluruh kehidupan Kristian. Seluruh kehidupan Kristian ada tanda kasih Kristus dan Gereja. Memandangkan ia melambangkan dan menyampaikan rahmat, perkahwinan di antara orang-orang yang sudah dibaptis merupakan sakramen tulen dalam Perjanjian Baharu. Sejarah ringkas sakramen ini Tiga abad pertama Dalam tiga abad pertama, umat Kristian mengikut amalan dan adat sosial di tempat mereka ketika itu. Amalan perkahwinan dalam kalangan orang Yunani dan orang Romawi (kebudayaan Yunani-Latin) ketika itu terdiri daripada dua momen yang berbeza: pertunangan dan perkahwinan. Letter to Diognetus (5, 6) pada abad pertama menyatakan bahawa orang Kristian mengikut upacara yang sama kecuali bagi apa sahaja perkara yang mungkin bercanggah dengan mentaliti dan tuntutan moral dalam agama Kristian. Bagi umat Kristian, mereka mendasarkan kefahaman mereka tentang perkahwinan atas Al-Kitab terutamanya dalam ajaranajaran Yesus dan surat St Paulus. Pembentukan sepanjang di seminari banyak mengajar dan memberi pengalaman kepada saya terutamanya dalam merefleksikan kehidupan seharian. Kebiasaannya, seorang seminarian yang berada pada tahun terakhir di Kolej St Peter akan dihantar ke Katedral St Joseph untuk tugas pastoral. Pada tahun 2014, saya telah dihantar ke Katedral St Joseph di Kuching untuk tugas pastoral selama empat bulan. Salah satu tugasan pastoral saya adalah melayani para migran yang tinggal di kilangkilang di Bintawa dan Sejingkat. Setiap Hari Minggu, saya akan pergi ke kilang untuk memimpin dan membawa mereka berdoa selain aktiviti kerohanian lain. Melalui aktiviti yang diadakan, kami dapat mendekatkan diri kepada gereja

dan memperdalamkan kerinduan pada Tuhan, malah mengeratkan hubungan silaturahim antara satu sama lain walaupun berbeza negara mahupun bangsa. Semasa saya bertugas di Gereja Our Lady Queen of Peace, Sri Aman, saya juga telah meneruskan misi pelayanan umat dan para migran di sana. Saya akan datang melawat dan mengadakan Misa Kudus bersama para migran sebulan sekali di Betong, Saratok dan Mount Hosanna. Kebanyakan migran ini datangnya dari negara jiran kita, iaitu Indonesia dan mereka datang ke sini kerana di tempat mereka tidak ada peluang pekerjaan. Kehidupan mereka serbaserbi kekurangan. Namun mereka harus terus bekerja bagi kelangsungan hidup. lebih-lebih lagi untuk membantu menyara keluarga yang berada jauh nun di sana. Mereka ingin

adat sosial ketika itu. Kebanyakan waktu dalam tempoh purba ini, perkahwinan adalah milik lingkungan keluarga yang bersifat peribadi, bukan lingkungan Gereja yang bersifat awam dan terbuka. Perkahwinan ketika itu selalunya diatur oleh ibu bapa atau keluarga dan melibatkan pertukaran harta benda dan hubungan antara keluarga. Maka itu, perkahwinan diraikan, bukan di gereja, tetapi di rumah persendirian, kadang-kadang dengan, tetapi selalunya tanpa, berkat rasmi Gereja atau kehadiran paderi. Maka itu, cabaran untuk Gereja ialah untuk membawa perkahwinan dari rumah dan membawanya ke dalam gereja. Satu lagi cabaran yang Gereja hadapi ketika itu adalah untuk menegakkan idealisme perkahwinan dalam dunia di mana perkahwinan yang dilarang, tidak teratur, rahsia atau sulit berleluasa. Cabaran ini diatasi perlahan-lahan pada abad-abad kemudian. Mengenai amalan perkahwinan ketika itu, terdapat bukti yang jelas bagi unsur-unsur Kristian yang biasa. Unsur-unsur Kristian yang biasa ini adalah (1) berkat dalam gereja dan (2) penggunaan tudung. Tiada bukti jelas bagi penggunaan unsur lain. Bagaimanapun, dalam tulisan awal Tertullian ( sekitar tahun 220 Masihi) beliau menyebut tentang penggunaan cincin besi tanpa batu permata, penggunaan tudung, berpegangan tangan kanan, dan ciuman suami isteri.

Sepanjang pelayanan saya bersama para migran, saya dapat melihat dan merasakan layanan yang baik daripada pihak majikan mereka. Saya juga berasa bersyukur dan berterima kasih kepada Tuhan atas layanan dan penjagaan yang sempurna oleh pihak majikan kerana selama ini sering kali kita dengar dan ketahui tentang kes penipuan, penindasan malah pemerdagangan pekerja oleh pihak majikan. Perkataan ‘migran’ selalunya popular dengan perkataan ‘pendatang asing’ dan secara automatik di dalam minda kita, dengan orang Indonesia, orang Bangladesh, orang Filipina dan sebagainya. Sejujurnya, secara tidak langsung, kita akan berfikiran negatif terhadap mereka. Saudara saudari terkasih, jangan kita lupa, sekarang kita adalah warga negara Malaysia, namun apabila kita pergi ke luar negara untuk bekerja, kita juga akan dipanggil sebagai ‘pendatang asing’. Malah kebanyakan anak muda kita berhijrah ke Semenanjung Malaysia dan Sabah untuk mencari peluang pekerjaan, dan ini bermakna mereka berhijrah ke tempat yang baharu dan asing bagi mereka, dan ianya sama seperti situasi para migran di sini. Bagi orang Kristian, kita semua adalah migran di

(Terjemahan) bumi ini. Kehidupan kita di dunia ini cuma sementara dan hanya persinggahan sahaja. Tempat kediaman dan kehidupan abadi kita selama-lamanya adalah dalam Kerajaan Tuhan. Kita sekarang dalam perjalanan menuju kepada kehidupan abadi untuk tinggal bersama-sama dengan Sang Pencipta kita iaitu Allah Bapa. Dalam Kitab Kejadian ada ditulis tentang kisah penciptaan yang menekankan bagaimana Allah menempatkan manusia sebagai ciptaan-Nya yang khusus dan betapa Allah mengasihi kita. Manusia disebut sebagai gambar Allah atau dalam Bahasa Latinnya, ‘Imago Dei’, yang mewakili Allah di dunia. Ini bererti, keberadaan manusia menunjukkan bahawa Allah adalah Kasih. Kita semua adalah anak-anak Tuhan yang dikasihi-Nya. Menurut Kitab Injil Matius 22:34–39: “Seorang Farisi bertanya kepada Yesus, ‘Guru, perintah manakah yang paling utama dalam Taurat?’ Yesus menjawab, ‘Kasihilah Tuhan, Allahmu, dengan segenap hatimu dan dengan segenap jiwamu dan dengan segenap akal budimu. Itulah hukum yang terutama dan yang pertama. Dan hukum yang kedua, yang sama dengan itu, ialah: Kasihilah sesamamu manusia seperti dirimu sendiri’.” Oleh sebab itu Tuhan ingin kita mengasihi, memberi pelindungan dan layanan yang baik kepada

sesama tanpa mengira bangsa, agama, budaya, dan negara. Dalam Kitab Imamat 19:34, Tuhan berseru kepada orang Israel: “Orang asing yang tinggal padamu harus sama bagimu seperti orang Israel asli dari antaramu. Kasihilah dia seperti dirimu sendiri, kerana kamu juga orang asing dahulu di tanah Mesir. Akulah TUHAN, Allahmu.” Akhir kata, marilah kita semua bersama-sama belajar untuk mengasihi dan mencintai sesama, walaupun sesiapa sahaja, para migran atau orang asing, sebagaimana kita mengasihi dan mencintai diri kita sendiri. Apabila kita “berusaha untuk mengasihi orang lain”, kita akan mendapati bahawa kita sering mencari wajah Tuhan sebagai sumber kasih, dan memandang Yesus sebagai teladan yang terbaik dalam kasih. Hanya dengan cara ini, kita akan mendapat pengertian yang lebih mendalam tentang kasih yang benar dan menemukan kekuatan untuk mengasihi sesama seperti Tuhan mengasihi kita. Kasih berasal daripada Allah. Sesiapa yang saling mengasihi, mengenal Allah dan dia adalah anak Allah, seperti apa yang kita boleh rujuk di dalam Surat Pertama Santo Yohanes 4:7. Selamat menyambut Hari Migran dan Pelarian Sedunia.

Ciri pada bacaan Misa Ahad: 12 September 2021: Hari Minggu Ke-24 dalam Musim Biasa Tahun B (Yesaya 50:5–9; Yakobus 2:14–18; Markus 8:27–35)

Kata-kata yang membina dan kata-kata yang memusnahkan Ada kata-kata yang membina orang dan ada kata-kata yang memusnahkan orang. Kata-kata baik dan kata-kata dorongan banyak membantu meningkatkan harga diri seseorang dan mendorong mereka untuk menjadi manusia yang lebih baik. Dari sudut sebaliknya pula, ada kata-kata kritikan dan kata-kata marah yang dapat memusnahkan keyakinan seseorang dan menyebabkan rasa tawar hati. Ia adalah sangat penting bagi guru-guru sekolah untuk menggunakan lebih banyak kata-kata pujian dan inspirasi dengan para pelajar mereka untuk merangsang pembelajaran. Demikian juga, ibu bapa boleh menggunakan lebih banyak kata-kata atau perbuatan yang memberi galakan kepada anakanak mereka, dan bukannya menyebabkan mereka rasa tawar hati. Kata-kata yang membina adalah kurang dalam hidup kita sedangkan kata-kata yang memusnahkan amat banyak sekali. Selalunya, apabila kita ingin memuji atau mendorong seseorang, kita biasanya tidak menggunakan banyak kata-kata untuk berbuat demikian.

Kata-kata itu sangat sedikit atau ringkas atau mungkin kedengaran tidak ikhlas. Sebaliknya kata-kata yang memusnahkan cenderung banyak dan ia umpama cirit katakata — kata-kata menyengat yang mengalir bebas. Dalam Injil pada hari ini, katakata pengiktirafan daripada Petrus sangat sedikit sekali selepas Yesus menanyakan soalan yang amat penting—“Siapakah aku menurut orang ramai?” Petrus menjawab, “Kamu adalah Kristus.” Ayat itu ada hanya tiga perkataan sahaja! Ia sebenarnya hanya “Kamu = Kristus.” Bagaimanapun saya dapat bayangkan bahawa bantahan Petrus adalah panjang dengan banyak kata-kata selepas Yesus secara terbuka menyatakan bahawa Dia ditakdirkan untuk menderita sengsara, ditolak oleh para pembesar, ketua imam dan orang bijak pandai, dan dihukum mati. Kata-kata Petrus yang tawar hati pasti banyak dan disebut dengan terburu-buru. Dan teguran Yesus juga panjang, “Pergi ke belakang Aku, Syaitan! Kerana cara kamu berfikir bukanlah cara Allah tetapi cara manusia.” Kata-kata yang dilontarkan oleh

Petrus dan Yesus kepada satu sama lain boleh melemahkan semangat Petrus. Dia baharu sahaja memuji dan mengaku Yesus sebagai Kristus tetapi selepas itu, dia dipanggil “Syaitan” oleh Yesus! Kata-kata memainkan peranan penting dalam hidup seperti apa yang kita sudah lihat, tetapi tindakan mesti menyusuli kata-kata itu. Itulah sebabnya kenapa Yesus menekankan perkara itu sejurus selepas Dia memberitahu bahawa Dia akan mengalami kesengsaraan dan kematian, “Jika ada orang yang ingin menjadi pengikut Aku, biarlah dia menyangkal diri dan memikul salibnya dan mengikut Aku.” Tindakan memikul salib kita dan mengikut langkah Yesus mesti selari dengan kata-kata yang mengaku Yesus sebagai Kristus. Kata-kata pujian dan dorongan mesti disertai tindakan yang menunjukkan makna katakata ini. Apabila saya memuji seseorang, saya mesti ikhlas; saya tidak memuji hanya untuk menyenangkan hati orang itu atau sekadar untuk memberi galakan. Orang itu wajar menerima pujian saya. Kata-kata Petrus dan pengakuan kita sendiri bahawa Yesus adalah Kristus menuntut agar kita memikul salib seperti Yesus. Sama seperti Yesus mengalami kesengsaraan dan kesakitan,

begitu juga kita. Pujian kita terhadap Yesus tidak berakhir dengan kata-kata, ia disusuli tindakan memikul salib kita sendiri mengikut langkah-Nya. Dalam bacaan kedua, Yakobus menegaskan perkara bahawa kepercayaan diiringi amalan baik. Jika ada orang memerlukan pakaian atau makanan dan kita hanya berkata kepada mereka, “Saya doakan kesejahteraan anda; panaskan diri anda dan makan banyak” tanpa memberi keperluan hidup yang asas ini kepada mereka, maka kata-kata itu tidak bermakna. Contoh dari Surat Yakobus ini menunjukkan bahawa kata-kata dorongan yang banyak tetapi tidak disusuli tindakan adalah kosong. Kata-kata ini, walaupun menggalakkan, bukanlah kata-kata yang membina orang. Sebaliknya ia boleh memusnahkan orang. Kita boleh tanya diri sendiri, adakah kita lebih banyak menggunakan kata-kata yang membina atau kata-kata yang memusnahkan? Dan apabila kita ada menggunakan banyak katakata yang membina, adakah kita benar-benar ikhlas dengan menterjemahkan kata-kata itu kepada amalan atau tindakan? (Terjemahan)

Kelahiran Bonda Perawan Maria

Gereja Katolik merayakan kelahiran Bonda Perawan Maria pada tarikh tradisional yang ditetapkan iaitu 8 September, sembilan bulan selepas perayaan Kandungan Tanpa Noda Dosa (Immaculate Conception) sebagai anak Santo Yoakim dan Santa Anna pada 8 Disember. Keadaan hidup Perawan Maria pada waktu bonda masih bayi dan pada awal hidup bonda tidak direkodkan secara nyata dalam Al-Kitab, tetapi dokumen lain dan tradisi yang menceritakan tentang keadaan di sebalik kelahiran bonda disebut oleh beberapa penulis Kristian terawal dari abad-abad pertama Gereja. Tulisan-tulisan tersebut, walaupun tidak dianggap memiliki kuasa seperti AlKitab, menggariskan beberapa kepercayaan tradisional Gereja tentang kelahiran Maria. ‘Protoevangelium Yakobus’, yang mungkin diletakkan dalam bentuk bertulis secara muktamad pada awal abad kedua, menggambarkan bapa Maria, Yoakim, sebagai seorang

anggota kaya dalam satu daripada 12 suku kaum Israel. Yoakim amat susah hati, sama seperti isterinya Anna, kerana mereka tidak ada anak. “Dia mengingati Abraham,” tulisan Kristian awal itu menyebut, “bahawa pada hari terakhir, Allah memberikan kepadanya seorang anak lelaki Ishak”. Yoakim dan Anna mula mengabdikan diri dengan bersungguh-sungguh dan setia kepada doa dan puasa, pada mulanya tertanya-tanya sama ada kegagalan mereka untuk melahirkan anak mungkin adalah tanda bahawa Allah tidak senang hati dengan mereka. Bagaimanapun pasangan itu ternyata akan diberkati jauh lebih besar berbanding Abraham dan Sarah, apabila seorang malaikat memberitahu Anna ketika dia menjelma kepada Anna dan bernubuat bahawa semua generasi akan memberi penghormatan kepada anak mereka yang bakal dilahirkan: “Tuhan sudah mendengar doa kamu, dan kamu akan mengandung, dan akan melahirkan, dan benih kamu akan

disebut-sebut di seluruh dunia.’ Selepas kematian Maria, menurut ‘Protoevangelium Yakobus’, Anna “membuat santuari” dalam bilik bayi perempuannya, dan “tidak membenarkan apa-apa pun yang biasa-biasa mahupun tidak bersih” kerana kesucian anaknya. Tulisan yang sama merekodkan bahawa, apabila Maria berusia setahun, bapanya “mengadakan perayaan besar, dan menjemput para imam, dan orang bijak pandai, dan para ketua, dan semua rakyat Israel”. “Dan Yoakim membawa anaknya kepada para imam,” tulisan itu menambah, “dan mereka memberkatinya, dengan berkata, ‘Ya Allah bapa-bapa kami, berkatilah anak ini, dan berikanlah kepadanya nama yang kekal abadi dan akan disebut-sebut dalam semua generasi’. Dan dia membawa anaknya kepada ketuaketua imam, dan mereka juga memberkatinya, sambil berkata: ‘Ya Allah Maha Tinggi, lihatlah anak ini, dan berkatilah dia dengan keberkatan terbesar, yang akan kekal buat selama-lamanya’.”

‘Protoevangelium’ itu seterusnya menceritakan bagaimana ibu bapa Maria, bersama para imam dari bait, seterusnya memutuskan bahawa Maria akan diserahkan kepada Allah sebagai seorang perawan yang dikonsekrasikan hingga akhir hayatnya, dan mengadakan perkahwinan yang suci dengan si tukang kayu Yosef. Santo Augustine menggambarkan kelahiran Bonda Perawan Maria sebagai satu peristiwa yang mempunyai makna kosmik dan bersejarah, dan awalan yang sewajarnya kepada kelahiran Yesus Kristus: “Dia adalah bunga di padang dari mana mekarnya bunga teratai di lembah.” Uskup abad keempat itu, ahli teologi yang begitu mempengaruhi kefahaman Gereja Barat tentang dosa dan sifat manusia, mengesahkan “menerusi kelahirannya, sifat yang diwaris dari ibu bapa pertama kita berubah”. Ibadat nampak semakin dipergiatkan dan mendapat berdoa bagi negara, dan berakhir dengan Misa untuk momentum. Kempen telah dilancarkan untuk menyelamatkan meraikan Hari Malaysia pada 16 September. Bumi. Adakah kita sedang menyaksikan kebangunan semula Keuskupan Agung Kuching akan melancarkan satu dan kesedaran tentang orang dan keadaan di sekeliling sesi doa 1-HR-A-Day dalam talian untuk umat Katolik kita? Adakah kita bakal menyaksikan hari-hari yang lebih berhimpun setiap hari pada jam 3.00 pm—jam kerahiman baik di hadapan? Bapa, dan berdoa selama sejam. Sejak beberapa minggu yang lalu, warga negara kita Bagi sebahagian daripada kita, imej Bonda Maria telah menunjukkan bahawa kekuatan dalam perpaduan telah dibesarkan dengan hari raya Kelahiran Bonda Suci wujud. Untuk berdiri dalam kesatuan dan berjuang demi Kita, acara memperingati Perawan Kesengsaraan dan keadilan. Demikian juga umat Kristian perlu bersatu untuk Penyanjungan Salib. menyelamatkn diri kita, untuk menyelamatkan dunia. Marilah kita mengangkat rosari kita, melayani Tuhan, Pada 31 Ogos lalu, Komisi Episkopal bagi Keadilan bersukacita dan bersabar pada waktu bermasalah, dan Penciptaan telah melancarkan kempen PROTEC Tahun renungkan kata-kata daripada lagu ini yang berbunyi… 2 untuk ‘Kurangkan Pembaziran Makanan, Tenusu dan “Tuhan. P E RU T U S A N Daripada Uskup Agung Simon Poh Saudara saudari yang dikasihi dalam Tuhan, Musim Penciptaan sudah tiba. Hari Doa Sedunia bagi Penjagaan Penciptaan jatuh pada tanggal 1 September. Ini bermula pada 1989 bagi umat Kristian Ortodoks yang memulakan tahun baharu mereka pada hari itu dengan memperingati bagaimana Allah mencipta dunia. Majlis Gereja-Gereja Sedunia melanjutkan perayaan itu hingga 4 Oktober. Dalam solidariti ekumeni, Pope Francis mengisytiharkan Musim Penciptaan dari 1 September – 4 Oktober pada 2015. Bagi umat Katolik, kita meraikan hari raya Santo Fransiskus dari Assisi, bapa perkumpulan Fransiskan pada 4 Oktober. Assisi merupakan sebuah bandar purba yang kecil dan dibina di atas sebuah bukit, kirakira tiga jam perjalanan dari Rom. Saya ingat waktu saya berjalan di sisi bunga matahari di kawasan lapang sepanjang perjalanan menuju ke Assisi; dusun zaitun dalam perjalanan ke Gereja San Damiano yang dibina semula oleh Santo Fransiskus sendiri, dan ladang cantik di sekitar. Ketika saya berjalan di lebuh berbatu bundar yang pernah dilalui Santo Fransiskus sendiri, saya dapat merasakan kedamaian di Assisi dan kedekatan dengan alam semula jadi di sekeliling bandar tersebut. Ia tidak susah untuk membayangkan Santo Fransiskus menyanyikan pujian kepada Allah. Malah, sajak pertama dalam bahasa Itali dikaitkan dengannya. Ini adalah him terkenal ‘The Canticle of the Sun’. Di bawah adalah persembahan muzikal, digubah oleh seorang Fransiskan, Sebastian Temple, yang kita sering nyanyikan di gereja di sini : Pujian kepada Tuhan Maha Besar dan Maha Tinggi Keberkatan dan kemuliaan adalah milik-Mu. Hanya penghormatan sahaja milik-Mu selama-lamanya. Pujian bagi-Mu, Tuhan dunia ciptaan, Dan terutamanya Tuan Saudara Matahari. Yang sepanjang hari, cahaya Kau beri, Mencerminkan-Mu, Ya Allah Kudus. Terpujilah menerusi Saudari Bulan dan Bintang, Terang dan berharga, ia menyinar di atas. Menerusi Saudara Angin dan semua Cuaca juga Terpujilah, Ya Tuhan Kasih. Menerusi Saudari Air, Tuhan terpuji Kerana ia baik dan suci, Dan Saudara Api yang Menerangi Malam, Dia begitu kuat dan terang. Terpujilah menerusi Saudari Bumi Ibunda, Kerana ia memelihara dan membimbing perjalanan kita. Dan menghasilkan begitu banyak buah dan rumput Dan bunga untuk menceriakan hari kita. Terpujilah menerusi semua yang mengampuni, Kerana kasih kepadamu yang menanggung kesakitan mereka.

Terberkatilah lelaki yang menderita dengan tenang, Mereka tidak akan menangis dengan sia-sia. Santo Fransiskus memuji Allah bagi semua keberkatan dalam alam semula jadi. Hubungannya yang lebih mendalam dengan penciptaan dan semua makhluk Allah digambarkan secara peribadi sebagai “Saudara Api”, “Saudara Matahari” dan “Saudari Bulan” dan malah kematian dirangkul sebagai “Saudari Kematian”. Santo Fransiskus dari Assisi sesungguhnya adalah Santo Penaung Ekologi. Paus Francis menulis satu ensiklik kepausan mengenai ekologi ‘Laudato Si’ mi Signore’ behubung Penjagaan Tempat Tinggal Yang Sama pada 2015 yang memberi visi hebat serta dorongan kepada Gereja Katolik ke arah Keadilan bagi Penciptaan dan Kerohanian Ekologi. Tahukah anda bahawa ensiklik kepausan baharu Paus Francis, ‘Laudato Si’ mendapat inspirasi langsung daripada Santo Fransiskus dari Assisi? Tajuk ‘LAUDATO SI’, mi Signore’ bermaksud ‘Pujian bagi-Mu, Tuhanku’ yang merupakan baris pertama him yang digubah oleh Santo Fransiskus dari Asisi sekitar tahun 1224 Masihi.

Pada 1 September yang lalu, Gereja Katolik di Malaysia melancarkan perubahan ekologi sepanjang tahun dengan Tahun Kedua PROTEC—Lindung Bumi Kita, Lindung Anakanak Kita. “Pilihlah kehidupan agar kamu dan anak-anakmu dapat hidup.” (Ulangan 30:19) Kempen pertama kita pada tahun lepas bertujuan untuk mengurangkan penggunaan tenaga elektrik. Kita mahu mengurangkan tapak kaki karbon dalam kehidupan seharian kita. Untuk kempen tahun kedua ini dari 1 September 2021 hingga 31 Ogos 2022, semua umat Katolik dijemput untuk: “Kurangkan Buku ini ada pada Pembaziran Makanan, Tenusu dan Daging”. harga RM4.00 • Makan lebih banyak makanan berasaskan tumbuhan tempatan (kurangkan makanan import). • Kurangkan pengambilan daging. • Jangan membazir makanan. (Pope Francis: “Membuang makanan adalah umpama mencuri daripada orang miskin dan lapar”.) Mencatatkan keputusan Misa Kudus diadakan cemerlang dalam peperiksaan semula di Chapel Bonda A-level pada waktu pandemik Maria, Stutong

KUCHING — Tahun 2020 dan 2021 ternyata mencabar bagi semua orang terutamanya semua pelajar yang menduduki peperiksaan A-level. Walaupun demikian, para pelajar dapat mengatasi semua kesukaran dan melakukan yang terbaik dalam peperiksaan siri Jun 2021. Para guru yang bermotivasi tinggi turut menjadi pemacu yang memberi inspirasi kepada mereka untuk mencapai prestasi yang lebih tinggi. Di sebalik semua ini adalah ibu bapa yang memberikan sokongan untuk menjayakan segalanya. Daripada empat pelajar yang menduduki peperiksaan A-level, Tara Jane Bhasker telah mencapai keputusan yang cemerlang iaitu 3A*1A. Dua pelajar lain mencapai kombinasi gred daripada A*, A dan B. Semua pelajar lulus

peperiksaan A-level mereka. “Menduduki peperiksaan A-level ternyata satu pengalaman yang mencabar, tetapi saya bersyukur di atas bimbingan konsisten daripada sekolah dan guru-guru yang saya kasihi. Saya teruja sekali dengan keputusan yang saya peroleh dan ingin sekali melihat apa yang terkandung bagi saya pada masa depan,” kata Tara. Beliau mempunyai aspirasi untuk mempelajari bidang perubatan di Universiti Monash atau IMU, kedua-duanya di Kuala Lumpur. Dengan kisah kejayaan ini, kita berharap agar ia dapat memberi inspirasi kepada para pelajar Y12 sekarang untuk berusaha sedaya upaya dalam peperiksaan siri November 2021 mereka. Paus Francis gesa umat dapatkan suntikan vaksin COVID-19

Dalam satu mesej video yang dikeluarkan sempena Majlis Ad Limina, Paus Francis memuji usaha para penyelidik dan saintis untuk menghasilkan vaksin COVID-19 yang selamat dan berkesan. “Berkat rahmat Tuhan dan usaha ramai, kita sekarang ada vaksin untuk melindungi diri kita daripada COVID-19,” katanya dalam video yang dikeluarkan pada Rabu lepas. Beliau menambah vaksin “membawa harapan untuk menamatkan pandemik, tetapi hanya jika ia disediakan bagi semua dan jika kita bekerjasama dengan satu sama lain”. Vaksinasi merupakan satu amalan kasih Paus Francis seterusnya menyatakan bahawa mendapatkan suntikan COVID-19 “yang dibenarkan oleh pihak berkuasa masingmasing” adalah “satu amalan kasih”. Membantu orang lain untuk melakukan perkara yang sama, katanya, juga merupakan satu amalan kasih. “Kasih bagi diri sendiri, kasih bagi keluarga dan rakan-rakan kita, dan kasih bagi semua orang. Kasih juga bersifat sosial dan politik,” katanya. Paus itu menyatakan kasih sosial dan politik dibina menerusi “perbuatan kecil dan individu yang berupaya mengubah dan memperbaiki masyarakat”. “Mendapatkan suntikan vaksin merupakan satu contoh yang mudah namun amat bermakna untuk menjaga satu sama lain, terutamanya golongan rentan,” ujarnya lagi. Paus Francis kemudian berdoa kepada Tuhan agar “setiap daripada kami dapat melakukan amalan kasih kecil kami sendiri”. “Tidak kira betapa kecil, kasih sentiasa besar,” katanya. “Perbuatan kecil bagi masa depan yang lebih baik.”

‘Kekuatan iman’ Paus disertai dalam video itu oleh beberapa orang kardinal dan uskup agung dari seluruh benua Amerika. Uskup Agung Jose Gomez, selaku presiden Sidang Uskupuskup Katolik Amerika Syarikat dan juga Uskup Agung Los Angeles, meratapi penderitaan dan kematian yang telah diakibatkan oleh pandemik di seluruh dunia. Beliau berdoa agar Allah “memberikan rahmat kepada kita untuk menghadapinya dengan kekuatan iman, memastikan bahawa vaksin ada untuk semua, supaya semua kita dapat menerima imunisasi”. Kardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes dari Mexico mengaitkan suntikan vaksin COVID-19 dengan masa depan yang lebih baik untuk semua. “Dari Amerika Utara ke Amerika Selatan, kami menyokong vaksinasi untuk semua,” kata kardinal itu. Vaksin yang selamat dan berkesan Kardinal Honduras Rodriguez Maradiaga berkata dunia ada banyak iktibar untuk diperoleh daripada koronavirus. “Tetapi satu perkara adalah pasti: vaksin yang dibenarkan adalah berkesan, dan ia wujud untuk menyelamatkan nyawa,” katanya. “Ia adalah kunci kepada jalan penyembuhan peribadi dan sejagat.” Kardinal Claudio Hummes dari Brazil memuji “usaha berani” golongan profesional kesihatan untuk membuat suntikan “yang selamat dan berkesan”. Beliau turut mengulangi pengesahan Paus bahawa “mendapatkan suntikan vaksinasi adalah satu amalan kasih”. Kardinal Gregorio Rosa Chavez dari El Salvador berkata vaksinasi membantu melindungi golongan paling lemah. “Pilihan kita untuk mendapatkan suntikan vaksin memberi kesan kepada orang lain,” katanya, dan menambah ia adalah satu tanggungjawab moral. Sesi Doa 1-Jam-Sehari untuk Penyembuhan, Harapan dan Kerahiman KUCHING — Keuskupan Agung Kuching akan melancarkan Sesi Doa 1-JamSehari khas dalam talian pada Selasa, 14 September 2021, Pesta Salib Suci. Ahli-ahli Legio Maria dan kumpulan doa daripada Keuskupan Agung akan memimpin sesi-sesi ini yang dijadual berlangsung setiap hari pada jam 3.00 petang— jam kerahiman apabila Yesus wafat di atas Salib dan Bapa menunjukkan kerahiman-Nya kepada dunia. Selama hampir 19 bulan sejak Mac 2020, ramai orang terpaksa menempuh sekatan pergerakan bagi tempoh yang lama, baik secara sukarela mahupun sebaliknya. Pandemik COVID-19 telah mengganggu kehidupan, khususnya dalam perkaraperkara yang melibatkan kesejahteraan rohani, mental, emosi dan jasmani mereka yang dikuarantin, kerana isu kesihatan atau terpaksa duduk di rumah. Uskup Agung Kuching Simon Poh bimbang kerana ramai orang tidak tahu ke mana atau kepada siapa untuk mendapatkan bantuan pada waktu mereka amat memerlukannya. “Kita ingin memberitahu mereka bahawa mereka tidak bersendirian. Yesus sentiasa ada di sana,” katanya. Sambil memetik Matius 18:20, “Di mana dua ataupun tiga berkumpul dalam nama Aku, di sanalah Aku di tengahtengah mereka”, Uskup Agung berkata sesi-sesi doa kumpulan
