Solemn Profession of Sr Anna Yeo FDC n 28 August 2021, the feast of St Augustine, I made my final vows as a Daughter of Divine Charity in England. I have been with the sisters for seven years. It is not something that I had ever imagined for myself, especially when I do not see myself as a devout person and even find prayers tiresome! As a typical Chinese Malaysian, I grew up striving for the best results academically so that I can be successful and have a good paying job as well as marrying a nice guy and have a lovely small family. I managed to do that to some extent. I went to great schools, St Theresa

primary, St Teresa and then St Joseph. I worked as an Environmental Consultant for six years and I loved it. I was content and comfortable with my life in Kuching. I had everything I needed and more. Then I decided to pursue further studies in England. A oneyear Masters degree to help me advance in my career in Environmental Science. I had ambitious plans. My application was accepted in all the universities that I applied to and in the end, I decided to go to University of East Anglia (although initially, that was not my first choice!). Little did I know, God has a reason for me to choose that particular university. I absolutely loved my year in UEA. I went to the UEA Catholic Chaplaincy every day as I felt it

was a safe and familiar space for me. I graduated with a distinction in my Masters of Science. I wanted to stay in England till the end of my student visa so that I can explore Europe. The only free option I had was to stay at a convent. The chaplain of the Catholic Chaplaincy suggested that and made the arrangements for me. It was not an easy decision to make as I was fearful and apprehensive. So, I went to stay with the sisters and I helped them in their school. I also joined them in their prayers and was part of their life. At the end of my student visa, I did not want to go home. That was a huge surprise for me as I did get very homesick. I missed my family, my friends and of course, the food! That was when I started

to question and discern. When the thought that perhaps I was called to be sister first entered my mind, it made me weak at the knees.

All sorts of doubts and fears entered my mind. Continued on p3

TODAY’S CATHOLIC OCTOBER 2021

October: a month for prayers and new beginnings

As things return to some semblance of normalcy and places resume activities stied for over a year, we are asked to refocus our attention on bringing Catholics and students back to Church and Sunday schools. How do we wean people back to physically going to Church to attend Mass? After months of conveniently attending online Masses without having to leave home, there are pertinent questions to reect on as we prepare for a post pandemic Church. Archbishop Simon Poh presented his observations at the recent Archdiocesan Pastoral Council (APC) AGM and proposes some guiding principles to tackle them. His recommendations are available on Page 5 of this October publication. Christina Eng has been reappointed Chairperson of the Kuching APC for the term 2021–2024, together with her previous Executive Board, and we welcome the new Vice Chairperson, David Disam and all newly appointed members of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council.

CATHOLIC today’s THE TEAM

We congratulate Sr Anna Yeo, FDC on her solemn profession of faith to the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Charity in England on 28 August 2021. Sr Anna hails from Kuching and is a former student of our local mission schools… St Teresa and St Joseph. Read her inspiring vocation journey on our cover page. St Joseph’s Private Secondary School witnessed the appointment of Fr Stanley Goh, SJ as its new principal, taking over from Fr Francis Lim, SJ who was appointed in 2012, and now heads to Singapore for a new assignment. Today’s Catholic would like to wish Fr Francis all the best in his new mission and thank him for supporting our publication with regular SJPS articles and his Verbum Domini column. Let us use this October month of Mission and Rosary to pray for increased faith, hope and love for ourselves and our community. Let us pray for mercy and compassion for humanity.

M E S S AG E From Archbishop Simon Poh Dear Brothers and Sisters, October is the traditional month of Family Rosary prayer. In our Malaysian Church, since 2019, we have dedicated the whole month for mission awareness. Pope Francis has provided us a Mission Sunday message with the theme: “We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). The Pope says, “We recall with gratitude all those men and women who by their testimony of life help us to renew our baptismal commitment to be generous and joyful apostles of the Gospel. Let us remember especially all those who resolutely set out, leaving home and family behind, to bring the Gospel to all those places and people athirst for its saving message.” We are thankful to the rst Mill Hill Missionaries for landing on Kuching wharf on 10 July 1881. “Today Jesus needs hearts capable of experiencing To be on mission is vocation as a true love story that to be willing to think urges them to go forth to the as Christ does, to peripheries of our world as believe with him messengers and agents of that those around us compassion. We can think of the peripheries all around us, in the are also my brothers heart of our cities or our own and sisters.

families, especially in these times of pandemic. To be on mission is to be willing to think as Christ does, to believe with him that those around us are also my brothers and sisters. May his compassionate love touch our hearts and make us all true missionary disciples.” This month, Pope Francis will launch a 3-year journey of Synod of Bishops 2021–2024. We will celebrate this at the local diocesan level to listen to one another with consultation and participation of the People of God—Bishops, priests and layfaithful. The word Synod is a Greek word sunodos which means ‘assembly’ or ‘meeting’. It comes from sun—‘together’ + hodos ‘way’. Thus we are coming together as a synodal church to seek the way to move forward together in communion, participation and mission. The Malaysian Catholic Church will begin with eight (8) areas that have been brought up at the rst Malaysian Catholic Clergy Assembly on 16–20 July 2018. Here are the eight areas that we need to keep our focus upon: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

I would also like to share with you my observations that I presented at the September Archdiocesan Pastoral Council AGM, as we prepare for a post pandemic Church. I invite all Catholics to reect on how our lives have been impacted by the pandemic. I would like to listen to your creative and new ways of ministry in the Archdiocese of Kuching. Fr Stanley Goh, SJ is new principal of St Joseph’s Private Secondary School KUCHING — Fr Francis Lim, SJ relinquished his position as the Principal of St Joseph’s Private Secondary School on 30 September 2021 after a service of 10 years or so. The baton has been passed to Fr Stanley Goh, SJ. The Jesuit Regional Superior of Malaysia-Singapore Region (MAS), Fr Christopher Soh, SJ missioned Fr Francis Lim, SJ to work in the Jesuit Regional Curia in Singapore. The Jesuit Regional Curia is the headquarters of the Jesuits in Malaysia and Singapore. This was an urgent mission that required Fr Francis’ presence in the Curia as soon as possible. Fr Francis was Principal from June 2012 up to September 2021 with a sabbatical year in 2018 when he went for tertianship, a Jesuit programme several years after priestly ordination. Fr Stanley is a Jesuit from Singapore and is no stranger to St Joseph’s Private Secondary School. Between 2014 and 2016, while he was still in formation for the priesthood, he taught English and Mathematics while working with the school camps and the performing arts. He brings with him a wealth of experience of teaching,

curriculum development and administration from secondary school to the university level. And having taught in Singapore, Malaysia, India and the Philippines, he also brings a global perspective to the school and the education on offer. His academic background includes a Bachelor Degree in Political Science and Master Degrees in Philosophy, Theology and Education. The school accorded a vote of thanks to Fr Francis for his contribution to the school as the Principal of St Joseph’s Private Secondary School, and wished him all the best in his new assignment at the Jesuit MAS Curia in Singapore.

Continued from p1 When my visa expired, I flew home with that seed planted in my mind. I shared it with my family and some close friends. It was not an idea that was received well by them. It is not a typical path that someone would take. Some felt that I was giving up too much, some thought it was too extreme as I could serve God in other ways and some worry that I would be seen as a failure by the definition of Asian success. It was a difficult time. I decided to fly back to England to clarify that it was not a passing phase. Within the month, I knew that this was what God is asking me to do. The sisters have never ever pushed or even suggested that I should be a sister. In all honesty, if they had, I would probably run away quicker than you can say ‘No thanks!’. I wrote to my mum and wrote to the Sister Superior telling them of my intention to join the sisters. That was seven

years ago. It has been a rollercoaster journey. It has not been as easy as some may think (we do not just pray, eat and sleep!) but I have no regrets. There is a misconception of religious consecrated life. People think that it is restrictive and lowly. I find it liberating and plentiful. I am glad that I accepted this calling. If anyone has even a tiny seed of thought for this vocation, my advice would be to give it a go! We are free to leave if we choose to, but you will only know for sure if you try living it even for a short while. I am at peace, I am filled with a joy that nothing can extinguish, I am truly fulfilled and content. I had experienced and lived a life defined as successful and great by normal standards. It was good but I found something greater and better—a life, with vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, from God, with God and for God. Sr Anna Yeo Chai Luan Daughters of Divine Charity

KUCHING — The second Alpha online course which began on 4 July, was named AlphaDM as it was a collaboration between Divine Mercy Sarawak (DMS) and the Pan Malaysia Alpha team. Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the team consisted of members from both the West and East Malaysian churches. The first Pan Malaysian Alpha in the Catholic Context online was in the month of April 2021, launched on Divine Mercy Sunday. The call of the Holy Spirit was evident, so almost immediately after the first course ended, we embarked on AlphaDM. FAN INTO FLAME THE GIFT OF DIVINE MERCY, was the tagline adopted for this AlphaDM course. Initial target was only for 100, but soon we realised that people were registering at a pace faster than

we could cope. Noticing that the Bahasa-speaking community was also keen to attend, the core team decided to split the language groups, plus adding on Youth Alpha. Fr John Gnanapiragasam who heads Alpha in the KL Archdiocese advised that ‘no one should be excluded.’ There was then no end to the targets until the course finally started on 4 July; we had almost 400 guests: 200 for English Alpha, 100 Youth Alpha, and 100 for BM Alpha, in three separate platforms. The team had all learnt along this journey that when the Lord calls, an aspiring disciple of the Lord would answer, HERE I AM LORD. BSC launches Pandemic Project 2021 to help the needy KUCHING — With the MCO in June/July 2021 and the closure of many businesses, many workers especially daily paid workers were asked to stop work and were left without any income. Pauline Lim, Head Servant of the Emmaus Servant Community (ESC), proposed to raise funds from among its Community members to help those affected. Based on past fund-raising projects, the ESC felt confident to raise RM5,000.00 to assist 25 families in need, giving RM200.00 to each family. Later, with the support of Fr Patrick Heng, Rector of Blessed Sacrament (BSC) Parish and Thomas Ting, Chairman (at that time) of the BSC Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), the ESC decided to invite other ministries in the Blessed Sacrament Parish to jointly raise funds to help more needy families. A PPC meeting was called on 8 July 2021 during which a subcommittee “Pandemic Project Committee” (PPCom) was formed, headed by Thomas Ngu. It was decided that the assistance should not be one-off but should stretch over three months with the hope that the pandemic situation would improve and businesses open again by then. The committee also realised that many caring

organisations and private individuals were, at that time, giving out food packages/baskets to those in need with particular reference to the “White Flag” initiative and the various Food Stations set up in several locations. Fr Patrick suggested that the aid should be in the form of cash to help these needy families to pay for their rental, utility bills, petrol and other incidentals. After much deliberation, it was finally decided to set some guidelines for the parishioners to identify and introduce the needy families to the PPCom for approval and disbursement of funds: 1. Priority be given to those in the urban areas. 2. Each family shall be given either RM100.00, RM200.00 or RM300.00,

depending on their needs. 3. The assistance shall be either for 1, 2 or 3 months, depending on their needs. With the assumption of RM300.00 for three months per family, a realistic target of RM45,000.00 for 50 families was set. The PPC and the Chinese Liaison Committee (CLC) committed RM5,000.00 and RM3,000.00 respectively to kick start the Pandemic project. The ESC pledged to raise RM5,000.00 a month over a three-month period from July to September 2021. The balance amount of RM22,000.00 was to be raised from the parishioners. A letter of appeal for donations was then issued by Fr Patrick while the PPCom had their first meeting on 11 July 2021 where many other details were finalised.

At the end of July 2021, a total amount of RM81,296.94 was collected to assist 104 families. These families were identified by “Introducers” from the various BSC ministries who went all out to identify the needy in their midst and neighbourhood. In August 2021, another RM17,000.00 was collected. A total of 28 families in need were added to the initial 104 families. As of 11 September 2021, the total amount raised is RM101,459.86 with a shortfall of RM3,340.14 still needed to support these 132 families. The fund-raising project ends on 30 September 2021. The PPCom is confident that God will provide the balance amount of RM3,340.14 needed, through the generous donations of the parishioners in these last few weeks of September. The small mustard seed (Matt 13:31-32) of the initial RM5,000.00 from the Emmaus Servant Community has grown into a big tree providing shade to 132 families. This Pandemic Project has shown us when Jesus multiplied the five loaves and two fishes to feed five thousand people (Matt 14:13-21), he too will do the same for us when we are willing to share our own five loaves and two fishes with others (Matt 14:16). Thomas Ngu

FMCC urged to be new leaven in the postpandemic communities of the parishes and dioceses KUCHING — Kuching prelate, Archbishop Simon Poh, who presided over Mass for the elders and ordinary members of the Fellowship of Malaysian Covenant Communities (FMCC), said in no uncertain terms that one of the current challenges for the covenant communities is whether members will return to the community gatherings and the praise and worship, etc, in the post-pandemic. He likened it to the similar yet sober challenge faced by priests whether Catholics would return to Mass after the pandemic. The FMCC, a joint initiative of the existing nine Covenant Communities in Malaysia to promote and foster fellowship and communion among the communities, were gathered for a virtual Eucharist, which was live streamed from the chapel of Kuching Archbishop Simon Poh 16 September. The last such albeit online. The Kuching prelate has put his gathering was held in Labuan in 2018, which has since made a new fingers on one of the FMCC’s provision to hold the gathering post-pandemic challenges. With biennially instead of annually great intuition, he stated with following the establishment of pastoral clarity in comparing his own journey as Archbishop in CHARIS in Malaysia. However, the FMCC felt that leading the Church during priority should be given to gather troubled times in the country. Ruefully he said “I was an the eldership to put into perspective the disarray of its inexperienced shepherd who was

called to face political giants,” referring to him being mobbed and insulted in the Kuching High Court over conversion ruling. In referring to the COVID-19 catastrophe, he pointed out “My job description as bishop did not have a guidebook on this pandemic. Neither did many of the current bishops, priests, your covenant elders, and all of us.” “But I am certain that when God calls and we respond in faith, he will equip us with the same Holy Spirit of Pentecost so that we can testify to him,” asserted the Archbishop as he recalled the numerous occasions that he was able to testify to God’s goodness since taking up the office of bishop. Seizing the opportunity to remind the FMCC leaders and grassroot members alike, the prelate called to mind the four pillars (principles) that made up the foundation and model of the early church on which covenant communities were built: 1) Teaching of the Apostles, 2) Fellowship, 3) Breaking of… Continued on p6

Post Pandemic Church Observation for Reflection

1. Will we lose our Catholics after this pandemic?Any Reasons? Mass attendance is still very low even when churches reopened. After 18 months of online Masses, the pertinent question is, “Will Catholics still come back to church for the sacrament?” There will be hundreds of babies waiting to be baptised, and will parents still be sending children to Sunday Schools when they are fully open? What about our young people who had spent most of their time on handphones and computers? Yet majority of these are not registered for on-line Catechism Classes.

2. Who will carry on our work? Any Succession planning? In our Church lay-organisations and liturgical ministries, we also realised that we had depended on the elderly who are very committed Catholics. When the SOP discourages those over 60 who have been the ones serving in Church, we suddenly experienced a vacuum in the people who can serve in Church and Masses. How do we raise up new leaders from the younger generations? 3. Socio-Political and Economic scenario Since 2018, we see three successive ruling governments that bring about changes to some of the institutional policies affecting the rakyat, notably in education, finance and management of economy, even religious freedom as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. There is also the challenge to medical and health services, labour/ employment with movement restriction. This has impacted our churches. We will need to rethink ways to creatively manage our pastoral activities and presence in the socio-political sphere. 4. Internet is a gift in the city, but there is increasing digital divide in rural areas We are blessed that during this pandemic with the advancement of technology and internet connections especially in city and main towns, we have been able to participate in on-line meetings, seminars and conduct formation sessions. But we are not to forget that there are rural communities that do not have adequate internet bandwidth as well as being too poor to have access to these modern gadgets and mobile instruments. We are now seeing a widening of the gap between the rich and poor, those who can afford technology and those who are left out in the rural; the digital divide will be a reality when these children grow up into adults. How can we empower the poor and rural youth?

5. New POOR amidst us in the parish community Since this pandemic, the Church has distributed close to 5,000 food baskets to the needy, in the rural villages and within Kuching city. Now we have a category of NEW POOR, with people who have recently lost employment and those who cannot sustain their businesses, etc. Do we know who the new category of POOR are in our midst? What are our responses? 6. Mental Health Issues & Responses We have also seen higher mental health issues, loneliness and depression especially among the elderly who feel isolated and restricted to home because of health issues. There are increasing suicide attempts when the suffering person could no longer cope nor think rationally. Counselling and assistance are much needed for these people. We thank the Lord for the daily on-line Calvary Hour of Mercy prayers from 3.00–4.00 pm that was launched last month on 14 September, Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. We need ways for Catholics to reach out by contacting and calling the elderly who live alone and isolated in their own house. I envisage that individual lay organisations (e.g. Legion of Mary, Family Bloc Rosary Group, Prayer and Cell groups, Senior Citizens fellowship, etc) can begin this new initiative to just make a short phone call to ensure that the elderly are coping fine and to offer a prayer to help them sustain throughout the day. New realities call for new ministries that the Holy Spirit will raise up. Who will respond to take up these new ministries? 7. Pastoral care for Families impacted by death For families who are affected by death during this pandemic period, they may experience trauma, pain, loss and the grieving process may be borne alone by the family because of travel restriction of their close ones. The pain and loss are even greater for families directly impacted by death of a loved one from COVID-19 infection. This is deeply felt by the surviving spouse and children. Pastoral care and outreach to such families by their neighbourhood Catholic groups, prayer groups etc, are much needed. Have we been making pastoral and providing emotional and spiritual support to bereaved Catholic families? Continued on p10

Institute for New Evangelisation focuses on parish leadership KUALA LUMPUR — Amidst the global chaos, the Catholic Church has managed to stay relevant by adapting to the new norms and embracing the gift of technology. We are still able to ‘attend’ Mass, Rosary sessions and BEC gatherings through Zoom. The virtual era that we are now living in, allows us to conduct faith formation programmes that reach out to a bigger audience, both inside and outside the Church. Permitting outsiders to experience the Catholic Church first-hand gives us the opportunity to fulfil our baptismal call to become missionaries and evangelise for Christ. Archbishop Simon described these four pillars as being reflected in the present context of the covenant communities as he knows them: 1) Word of God, 2) Community Life, 3) Mass/ Eucharist, and 4) Ministry and Pastoral Services. As far as to his shepherd’s knowledge, he was certain that the Sunday Eucharist is the reason that has united the Catholic Covenant Communities from breaking away, which unity has expressed the corporate Body of Christ. Though the pandemic has suspended services in church, praying at home and worshipping the Lord as a domestic church in solidarity with all Catholics is to be greatly encouraged. Thanks be to God for the new technology (via Zoom, Google Meet, etc), a day does not go by without being able to access to esessions, listening to the Word of God, interceding, praying and worshipping the Lord using available apps. The Archbishop charged the elders the responsibility to feed the communities daily with God’s Word. The community life is akin to family life, coming together for fellowships and sharing of meals. Though the pandemic has suspended these family pursuits, God intended the community to learn some lessons from the pandemic. During the several lockdowns, the communities have been able to experience a deeper communion and connection with God and with

relatable, and adaptable leaders. The INE reached out to the Bishops of Peninsular Malaysia to support this initiative. The PLTT was subsequently launched by Bishop Bernard Paul together with Bishop Sebastian and Archbishop Julian Leow on 23 July. A total of 113 participants from parishes across Peninsular Malaysia attended the six online sessions which took place from 24 July – 28 August. Each session was about two hours long and participants were broken up into discussion groups at the end of every session to share their views on the session and to do simple activities prepared by the speakers. The programme was deemed a success since 85 percent of the participants responded positively to a post-event survey on whether they would consider participating in a follow-up training module. INE has two upcoming events, the Leaders Idea Sharing Session (9 October) and the PLTT in Bahasa Malaysia in November. Malaysia successfully hosts The Call of the Holy Spirit 17th AFCMA Congress 2021 Continued from p3 Him better and to allow the

KUALA LUMPUR — The 17th AFCMA Congress 2021, with the theme Building Bridges through Healing and Spirituality, was successfully organised by the Catholic Doctors Association Malaysia (CDAM). The Asian Federation of Catholic Medical Association (AFCMA) convenes its congress once every four years. Malaysia, being the host country, was scheduled to hold the congress in 2020. However, due to the pandemic, the congress was postponed to 2021. This year’s congress marked a huge milestone in the history of AFCMA itself, as it was hosted virtually for the first time. Under the leadership of Dr Freddie Loh, the committee worked relentlessly for the success of the congress. Juggling our own medical practices and organising a virtual congress seemed like a mammoth task. However, our Lord’s hand was upon each and every one of us, guiding us every step of the way. The congress took place virtually from 16–19 September with 253 delegates from across three continents and 14 countries and included doctors, nurses, allied healthcare workers and medical students. It not only boasted an extensive number of delegates, but also an array of world class international speakers. The notable Alimurung Lecture alone garnered 777 views over the weekend. Similarly, many of the other webinars became of popular interest among delegates and garnered between 550-650 views. The congress was officiated by Archbishop Julian Leow, from the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur, with his opening message and Mass. Ecclesiastical Assistant Fr Phillip Chua presided at the closing Mass. Our faith, experienced as a community of believers, has brought us all into a better relationship with Jesus Christ. We have a few nonChristians journeying with us on the AlphaDM course. At the end of the course, three decided to take a leap of faith by joining the RCIA and to be baptised as full members of the body of Christ on Easter next year. Praise the Lord. In bringing a truly spiritfilled Alpha to a close and following the Spirituality of Divine Mercy, we appeal to everyone to do a corporal work of mercy. We raised a total of RM9,860 from all participants, and the money was distributed to the Little Sisters of the Poor in Penang (RM2,000), the Little Sisters of the Poor in Cheras (RM1,760), and RM6,100 to the Home of Peace in Kuching. We thank the Lord for HIS generosity and continued Providence. AlphaDM ended on 12 September. But the closeness of the relationship continues as the groups pledge to stay in touch, to pray and praise God together. The main hosts’ group consisting of 55 persons continue to stay in touch with prayer requests, sharing joys and sorrows, as we enjoy each other’s company on this journey. As a follow up after Alpha, the working team has roped in more missionary disciples to organise Lectio Bible Study on Mary, to be launched on 13 October 2021. At the last count, we have registered more than 220 participants. The collaboration of the Pan Malaysian Church is a sign of God’s grace at work, where we strive for unity in the Body of Christ. Pope urges choices that ensure food, healthcare, living conditions for the poor VATICAN CITY — Expressing pain at strong inequalities in healthcare and living conditions of people that prove that not all lives are equal and health is not protected for all in the same way, Pope Francis on Monday called for political, social and environmental choices that ensure access to food, healthcare and improved living conditions, especially for the poor. “Indeed, the pandemic crisis has made "both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor" (Laudato si', 49) resound even more strongly. We cannot be deaf to this twofold cry; we must listen to it well!” Pope Francis made the call on Monday as he received in audience some 100 participants in the 2-day general assembly of the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life. “Public Health in Global Perspective - pandemic, bioethics, future”, is the theme of the September 27-28 virtual workshop that the Academy organized for the occasion. Listening to cries Tired of much discussions on the Covid-19 pandemic, we are tempted to mover over to other issues, but the Pope said, “It is essential to reflect calmly in order to examine in depth what has happened and to glimpse the road to a better future for all.” He urged the participants to

These issues have not drawn the mobilization of energy and resources as Covid-19 pandemic. Living conditions While commending the measures against Covid-19 on a global level, the Pope said it should also make us alert and be responsible for the serious conditions in which others live, such as the lack of vaccines, drinking water and food, regarding which we have so far taken little or no interest. In this regard, the Holy Father said he does not know whether to laugh or cry when he hears authorities advising slum dwellers to sanitize themselves several times a day with soap and water when they have neither water nor soap. multiple dimensions and interconnectedness, the Pope said, we can observe how even living conditions, which are the result of political, social and environmental choices, have an impact on the health of human beings. He said there were strong inequalities in different countries and in different social groups regarding life expectancy and healthy life expectancy, which depends on variables such as salary level, educational qualification and the neighborhood. The inalienable dignity of the human person calls for appropriate commitment to overcome inequalities, or else we are in fact accepting the painful reality that not all lives are equal and health is not protected for all in the same way. Pope Francis wished that a free healthcare system such as in Italy and elsewhere, continue, otherwise only those who can afford to pay will have the right to healthcare. Free healthcare, he said, helps overcome inequality. Abortion and euthanasia – culture of waste Pope Francis urged support for international and common initiatives, such as that of the G20 that aims at creating global governance for the health of all the inhabitants of the planet. In this regard, the Pontifical Academy for Life can also offer a valuable contribution, such as in public debates, without "watering down" the Christian anthropological proposal, inspired by Revelation, which can also help today's men and women to rediscover the primacy of the right to life from conception to its natural end. He lamented today’s culture of waste which kills babies directly with abortion. This has become a “normal” habit, which is very ugly and “really a murder”. In this regard, the Pope asked a double question: “Is it right to eliminate, to take a human life to solve a problem? Is it right to hire a hitman to solve a problem? That's what abortion is.” The Holy Father also spoke about the elderly, who are regarded as “waste material” a bit because they are of no use... But they are roots of wisdom, which this civilization discards. He denounced what he described as the law of "hidden" euthanasia, which shortens the life of the elderly who are provided only half the medicines, arguing they are expensive. Catholic academics, universities and hospitals, the Pope said, cannot walk the road of “waste”. Vatican News

THE SACRAMENTS By Fr Patrick Heng THE SACRAMENTS is a series of teachings by Fr Patrick Heng Lesson 6 – The Sacrament of Marriage (Part 2) In the Catechism of the Catholic Church no.1210, it says “Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Conrmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life.” The seven sacraments can be separated into three groups:

1. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION which will bring a person into the full life of Christ (Baptism, Eucharist, Conrmation) 2. SACRAMENTS OF HEALING which heal both the soul and the body (Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick) 3. SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT in which a person responds to a specic call of God (Marriage, Holy Orders) Eleventh to the Twentieth century Some issues on marriage that the Church struggled with were the definition of marriage, indissolubility of marriage, ecclesiastical jurisdiction over marriage and marriage law, as well as clandestine marriages. In 1012, at the Synod of the Province of Rouen in France, canon 14 stated that in order to ensure the reality of marriage as a public act, all marriages must be performed in facie ecclesiae, that is, before the doors of the church. This means that the place for the blessing and the marriage is now the church and not in the homes. Marriage must not be held in secret but in public. Clandestine marriages were forbidden and although they were considered valid, their validity without the proper ecclesiastical witnesses were questionable. The spouses must be blessed in the church by a priest and their ancestry must be investigated before they marry. The Fourth Lateran Council (1215) declared marriage as a sacrament. This means that marriage fell under the jurisdiction of the church which sought to protect the marriage union, to promote natural marital function of procreation, to ensure marriage was contracted freely and to determine its validity. To ensure the public act of marriages over clandestine marriages, the Council insisted on the publication of the banns of marriage. At the Council of Florence (1438–1445), matrimony was listed as one of the seven sacraments of the church. At the Council of Trent (1563), it was decided that marriage be celebrated in the presence of the parish priest for validity, with the formula, ‘I joined you together’. The ritual of 1614 laid great emphasis on the priest’s role in the rite of marriage which is to be held in the church itself and not in facie ecclesiae. The Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) affirms the nature of marriage as a covenant and as a sacrament which a man and a woman establish a partnership for life. This covenantal partnership is ordered for the well-being of the spouses, for procreation and the upbringing of children. The Council also defines marriage as a vocation which is a call to a life of holiness and service within the couple’s own relationship and in their family. Who can receive the sacrament? Matrimony is not an obligation for everyone, especially since God calls some men and women to follow the Lord Jesus in a life of virginity or of celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. This is the vocation to a life of virginity or celibacy. Some baptised men and women are called to a married life. In the Sacrament of Matrimony, a man and woman establish a lifelong bond

which is order towards the good of the spouse and the procreation and education of the offspring. This is the vocation to the married life. Who can administer this sacrament? The minister for the Sacrament of Matrimony are the spouses themselves. They confer on each other the Sacrament of Marriage by expressing their consent before the Church witnessed by a priest or deacon, two witnesses and the congregation. A brief history of the sacrament What is the function of the priest and the two witnesses at the celebration of a marriage? The function of the ordained minister (CCC 1630) is: 1. To receive the consent of the spouses in the name of the Church and 2. To give the blessing of the church. The priest’s presence and that of the witnesses shows that marriage is a Church reality (CCC 1631). The Church obliges people to be married before a priest and two witnesses because: 1. Marriage should be celebrated in the Church’s public liturgy. 2. Marriage bestows a Church order with rights and responsibilities. 3. There must be certainty about the state of life in the Church and thus the need for witnesses. 4. The public character strengthens the consent and the spouses’ fidelity. What is the form and matter of this sacrament? The form of the Sacrament of Matrimony is the Consent of the marriage (Canon 1057) indicated by the ‘I take you to be my wife’, ‘ I take you to be my husband’, which the spouses give to each other publicly in the presence of a priest or deacon, two witnesses and the congregation. The matter of this sacrament consists in this Consent to live together as husband and wife in unity, as well as the consummation of the marriage (Canons 1056, 1061). When is the Marriage Consent of two baptised persons freely expressed? (CCC 1625) The Marriage Consent is freely expressed when it is: 1. Not being under constraint (e.g. coercion, grave eternal fear, etc). 2. Not impeded by any natural law. 3. Not impeded by any ecclesiastical law. What does the lack of freedom in a Marriage Consent mean? (CCC 1628) The Marriage Consent must be the free act of the will of the couple. If this freedom is lacking, the marriage is invalid. Inordinate Attachments

In today’s Gospel reading, an unnamed man seeks out Jesus and asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. During the time of Jesus, the belief in the resurrection and eternal life was a relatively new development in Jewish thought. Why was it so? Because it was not shared by everyone. The Pharisees believed in the resurrection from the dead while the Sadducees did not. Thus we know that this man most probably has a greater leaning towards the beliefs of the Pharisees. Maybe it is also why Jesus gives the answer that one must follow the commandments as do all Pharisees. The man admits he has observed all of these since his earliest days. This statement

makes Jesus look steadily at him, and Mark says Jesus loves him because of this. Jesus can see into this man’s heart that he longs for something deeper than just merely following the commandments, which can be on the surface only, in order to achieve eternal life. Jesus then asks this man to do two things which can nudge him to go deeper in his relationship with God: 1) he must give up his possessions and 2) follow Jesus. Consequently we know this man is rich and this makes him leave in sadness because he cannot give up his great wealth to follow Jesus. Some Christians have taken Jesus’ words literally, for instance, taking the vow of poverty in a religious congregation. This is a form of radical commitment to the

by Fr Francis Lim, SJ

For the greater glory of God

Gospel of Jesus. Still others have tried to get rid of those things only that prevent one from following Jesus, for example owning huge mansions and fancy cars. Nonetheless, most of us have generally understood that in following Jesus, we get rid of inordinate attachments to material possessions. Inordinate attachments here means attachments to things that are not normal in humans and that will prevent us from flourishing as human beings. For example, I am obsessed with collecting a certain kind of merchandise that I spend time, money and energy on it to the point that it is no longer a hobby. Inordinate attachments may not necessarily be to material possessions; it could be habits. Let us reflect. Is there any physical habit I have that gets in the way of my following Jesus— food, drink, sex, exercise, or sleep? What are my emotional habits? What is my first response to stress, fear, or pleasurable stuff? It is possible to be comfortable with emotions that aren’t necessarily positive but they are familiar, so we go to them quickly. Some people live comfortably with anger and irritability. Others want only positive feelings which can motivate them to avoid anything perceived as negative. What is my median attitude? This is similar to an emotional habit, but it adds outlook to

emotion. Must I always look on the bright side, even when I need to deal with something that is negative? Do I go immediately to the worst-case scenario? Do I keep myself set apart from others so that I can observe and judge rather than engage and risk? Or do I feel that everyone depends on me, all the time? These physical habits, emotional habits, and median attitudes can be addictive to the point of being inordinate attachments that prevent us from following Jesus. Any habit that induces us to avoid authentic engagement with God is a form of inordinate attachment. We usually think of unhealthy relationships with people, or relationships with possessions, money or power. But it is convenient to overlook the subtler relationships we have within the self, for example, with our feelings, our body, and our view of life. We need wisdom and understanding from God to help us identify these relationships and inordinate attachments as prayed by the author in the first reading. The author of Hebrews also puts it aptly—God can judge our secret emotions and thoughts—nothing is hidden from God. We can be assured that with God everything is possible. God can help us in our development to full human flourishing in right relationships with God and others.

Post Pandemic Church Continued from p5 8. Refocus on the Family as Domestic Church & Keluarga Malaysia We are now going back to the Family as Domestic Church because of this pandemic. We realised that this pandemic with the lockdowns has offered or forced families to spend time together. Many would have agreed that we have taken more meals together in the home than before the pandemic as well as praying together. This is the opportunity to speak of Keluarga Kristian as the building blocks of the Church,

society and thus our nation. May our Christian Families personify the authentic values of family life and the gospel in contributing to our Nation’s vision of Keluarga Malaysia. Let the Christian family life be the very model foundation of our nation.

Recommended Guiding Principles 1. Be the Church that have been on the Streets and smell of the Sheep How do we reach out and be the Church of Evangelii Gaudium that has the smell of the sheep; a church that has been on the streets caring for

the people of God… Do you know God’s Vision for our Church? 2. Always Remember the Catholics who are not able to participate in Church But when we sincerely do the counting, we realised that we have easily left out over 80 percent of the Catholics who are not directly benefiting from pastoral care provided by the parishes. 3. Never forget the Poor who needs our help to survive My request is for all PPCs to focus and attend to the immediate needs of food, shelter and clothing for the

NEW POOR. Never allow our formation programmes or discussions at meetings make us lose sight of the Poor of the Lord. “If one of the brothers or one of the sisters is in need of clothes and has not enough food to live on, and one of you says to them, ‘I wish you well; keep yourself warm and eat plenty’, without giving them these bare necessities of life, then what good is that? Faith is like that: if good works do not go with it, it is quite dead.” (James 2:15-17). ✠ Archbishop Simon Poh 24 September 2021

YOUTH 2021 Youth Alpha Testimonies KUCHING — Some of the students from St Joseph's Private School took part in Youth Alpha 2021 organised by the Alpha of the Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur from 4 July to 12 September 2021. Here are their testimonies: Throughout this journey of Alpha, I have not only been healed spiritually but also physically. I’ve made lots of new friends and super amazing people. My host, co-hosts and members of my group were so warm and welcoming. They would never push us if we feel uncomfortable and I had so much fun talking and sharing with them as well. I have been calmer when talking with my parents and also managed to be more patient and not as grumpy. I also loved the games played during our Alpha course. They were so interesting and fun such as guessing the anime characters, guessing songs based on emojis and guessing different types of food delicacies. The videos shared were also so informative. I also loved the praise and worship songs played which I also sang along too! As a whole, I really loved this Alpha course. I learnt so much from this course. It made my fears go away and also allowed me to forgive others more easily. I denitely don’t regret joining this Alpha course and will continue my friendship with my group members and hosts without a doubt. Nicole Tsai (F2 Gamma)

I started my Alpha journey on 4 July, which will soon come to an end on 12 September. From this wonderful 11 weeks of Alpha journey, I have learnt more about my faith and my relationship with Jesus. Every week, we learnt different topics about Jesus. The week that touched me the most was Holy Spirit Weekend. We learnt about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and we were prayed upon by our host in each group. I was in Group 9 which consisted of ve people that included the host, Martin. He was an affable and amiable person, so are my group mates. I have learnt to open up with people I am not familiar with and bonded with them. I have also learnt the ability to forgive the ones that hurt me. Psalm 86:5 “You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.” I have a fear that if I don’t pray for one day, it is a sin, but I have learnt that it is not true and that I have to be more consistent with my prayers and I have learnt the correct way to pray. I have learnt more about Jesus, and the way I think of him, to be more honest with my family and be kinder to my siblings. Ariana Seyra (F2 Kappa) For 11 weeks, I attended my rst Alpha Youth. It was a good experience despite being carried out online. Personally, I have joined many youth programmes when I was younger but I have to admit, out of all of it, Alpha Youth has provided me the most opportunity to share my thoughts and opinions. During Alpha every week, we will usually have to go into breakout rooms. Sometimes it was quite awkward because all of us were just bare acquaintances. However after spending more time together, we were more open and detailed with our responses. I tend to have more courage and be less shy to elaborate my ideas. I do nd the Alpha experience really fruitful too as it’s like a huge gathering of God’s children together, learning more about God and sharing our ideas, experiences as well as testimonies. The Praise and Worship session was great too though it would be a lot more exciting physically. But nevertheless, I still enjoyed the worship songs especially Oceans by Hillsong United which is one of my personal favourites. To summarize my reection, Alpha Youth was a good experience and I hope more people will be able to have a deeper connection and relationship with God through youth. Kawasan sekitar Programthe Khas Grace Chong (F3 Eta)

This 12-Week Youth Alpha Programme has been very meaningful and enjoyable to me. Before it all started, I was a little scared that the people there would be very strict and there would be a lot of sharing to do. But it turned out to be quite fun. My hosts and co-hosts conducted games every week to make the group discussions livelier. I liked the Q&A session in our breakout rooms as we get to give some funny answers too. Luckily, all the members from my group were from SJPSS so I felt a little bit more open to share. I also enjoyed watching all the videos that they showed us. It was fun listening to people’s opinions on all the different questions in the videos. One of the videos taught me that much happiness won’t last long if we don’t have God in our hearts. The time we spend with God, our family and our friends will grant us everlasting happiness. The Holy Spirit Weekend was also very interesting. Eddy (the leader) led us in the prayer to the Holy Spirit. He was lled with the Holy Spirit and was able to say out the sicknesses of some people and they were healed. Through Alpha, I feel that I have grown closer to God and the Holy Spirit. All in all, this programme has made me feel more joyful and it has helped me make some new friends. Mark Loi (F2 Gamma) Youth Alpha was fun. At rst I didn’t really want to join the programme because I thought it was going to be very serious but it turned out to be really fun and interesting. The host and co host in my group always lets us play games in our breakout rooms and it was very enjoyable although I didn’t attend most of the games. This programme really helped me to get closer to God. I hope that there will be similar programmes like this in the future. Terence Chua (F2 Omega)

Pope encourages young people in effort to shape better future for food

Catholic student in Rome wins top Arabic-reading prize VATICAN CITY — Have you ever read 50 books in your native tongue and then written a one-page summary of each of them? Now imagine doing the same in a language which is not your own. That impressive feat is exactly what Alexander Vörös did recently to win a top prize in Arabic literature, the Arabic Reading Championship.

World Food Forum - a youth-led movement and network that aims to achieve "zero hunger". VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis on Friday urged a youthled movement, which aims to tackle the world’s food crisis by transforming global food systems, not to tire in working together to ensure that everyone can afford a dignied life. In a video message read on the Pope’s behalf by Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy Father encouraged young people gathered at the online World Food Forum (WFF), October 1 to 5, to “remain united and steadfast” in their purpose “for a better future”. The WFF is an innovative youth-led movement and network that aims to transform agri-food systems and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular, “zero hunger”. TOXIC CHRISTIANITY the reality and the truth

WHY SOME YOUTHS ARE LEAVING THE CHURCH From a survey conducted among the local community as well as some friends abroad, the responses obtained were rather astounding. Among the reasons given were that they faced unpleasant experiences in the Church or community, and hypocrisy. For example, some raised that a church leader should practice what they preach. Once they noticed a flaw or saw a church leader making some mistakes, the action would justify their thoughts that the Church is no longer a good place anymore. Because of that, they choose to leave the Church, having come to a conclusion that both the Church and the world are the same.

SAKRAMEN Oleh Fr Patrick Heng SAKRAMEN ialah siri pelajaran oleh Fr Patrick Heng

Ajaran 6 – Sakramen Perkahwinan (Bahagian 2) Dalam Katekisme Gereja Katolik No. 1210, ia menyebut “Kristus menetapkan sakramen-sakramen bagi undang-undang baharu.

(Terjemahan) Akan bersambung

sedang berlangsung, mereka ternyata kekurangan wain.

BERITA

TODAY’S CATHOLIC OCTOBER 2021

Uskup Agung Simon Poh: Gereja Pasca Pandemik 1.

Seruan Roh Kudus memang nyata, jadi hampir serta-merta selepas kursus pertama berakhir, kita memulakan AlphaDM.
