Archbishop’s Chinese New Year Message “In the Lord’s name, I greet you with New Year’s blessing and joy!” Brothers and Sisters, It was two years ago during Chinese New Year 2020 that we received news of the outbreak of a new coronavirus COVID-19. Since then, we have been under the shadow of COVID-19, with another new Omicron variant today. But as followers of Christ, let us always hold on to the Jesus who has guided us through the years. I would like to share my thoughts with you on this Chinese New Year 2022.

春 Spring to celebrate new life and fresh beginning It is good to remember that the Chinese Lunar New Year takes place in spring. Spring comes after a long winter when trees look dead with wiry branches. Springtime is thus a celebration of life with new shoots, and buds sprout on the trees; with birds and animals coming out in the eld. During the CNY, we use the character 春 Spring to celebrate new life.

Year of Tiger - the 王 King of the animals This year’s Chinese New Year is the year of the Tiger. • It is said that there is a Chinese character 王(pronounced “wang” meaning King)that is traceable on the forehead of the tiger for he is the King of the animals. •A tiger is bold and given the greatest honour. •As Christians, we have Christ our King who gave his life for us on the Cross that we may live. Let us live our lives under the kingship of Christ, who willingly sacriced his life for us that we may live as children of God.

God is the Master主of Heaven and Earth To denote an authority higher than the King, a stroke (‘) is added to become 主, which means Master. • During the mission to China, Jesuit Priest Fr Matteo Ricci used the term 天主 to call on God our Heavenly Father. • That is why Catholics are 天主教. • The Lord’s Prayer, the “Our Father” is called 天主经.

True Meaning of "福" (fú) or True blessedness

福 = 礻(示) spirit [ shì ] + 一口田 The right half of "福" (fú) 一 口 田" (romanised as yīkǒutián), means literally, ‘one mouth and padi-eld’. A person who has a padi-eld to provide for himself and thus can be happy. The left half of "福" (fú), "礻" (shì), means 'God', as the foundation of true blessedness. This expresses a relationship with God, “Seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given Visit us at http://www.todayscatholic.com.my

to you as well.” (Matthew 6:33).

True Happiness in the Beatitudes Jesus offers us the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10) as guidelines to help us to experience true blessedness with God and others: 3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” - Be satised and always be thankful with our blessing. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted” - Trust in God who is source of life eternal. 5 “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth” - Be humble. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be lled” - Act and do what is right before God. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” - Be kind in words, thoughts and deeds. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” - Seek God’s kingdom and its values. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” - Be people of peace and harmony. 10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” - Be faithful in the face of challenges and difculty.

CONCLUSION • Jesus Christ as the Son of God is also considered as Lord and King who had willingly given up his life on the Cross to bring forgiveness and mercy on humanity. He had performed this sacrice of love that we may live. • “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) • We are thus invited to imitate Jesus in making sacrices of love and acts of charity for the common good of all people. • Remember to give to charity and especially to assist families, widows and orphans and all those who have been badly impacted by this pandemic. With gratitude in our hearts, let us celebrate the Lunar New Year. We thank God for having guided us safely through these two years of pandemic as we look forward in hope for a better tomorrow. Let us pray and seek God’s blessing for the whole Year 2022. Together with Archbishops Emeriti John Ha and Peter Chung, my brother Bishop Joseph Hii of Sibu and Bishop Richard Ng of Miri, all priests and religious of the Archdiocese of Kuching, I wish everyone and friends of good will a blessed new year, lled with hope, health, peace and joy. Blessed New Year 2022.

TODAY’S CATHOLIC FEBRUARY 2022

CATHOLIC today’s THE TEAM

A time for new beginnings

We entered the Lunar Chinese New Year of the Tiger on 1 February 2022. After all the customary and traditional spring cleaning of our homes and ofces to welcome the new year, perhaps we may also consider ‘spring cleaning’ our own lives too… for new beginnings. By God’s grace, I was able to complete an online 33Day Consecration to Jesus through Mary retreat that ended on the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, on 11 February. However, this pales in comparison with what our priests and religious have undergone to submit themselves to serve the Lord. A Holy Mass to celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life took place on 5 February at the Carmelite Chapel attended by representatives from the religious orders serving in the Archdiocese of Kuching. We look forward to the diaconate ordinations of Seminarians Davie anak Entalai and Henry anak

Jimbey. Davie will be ordained at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Sri Aman on 19 February and Henry at St Stephen’s Church, Bau on 20 February. Although parishes were allowed to celebrate physical CNY Thanksgiving Masses, the atmosphere in most Churches was pretty much subdued this year because of the pandemic SOPs. Nevertheless, parishioners were happy to receive the customary ‘ang pow’ and oranges. The annual Red Mass for the legal profession to mark the opening of the new judicial year was celebrated at St Joseph’s Cathedral on 12 February this year. You can read the story on Page 2. Let us begin this new Spring calendar with the words: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30), as we continue our earthly pilgrimage.

KUCHING — The Votive or Red Mass to seek guidance from the Holy Spirit for the legal fraternity, has been celebrated in the Archdiocese of Kuching since 2015. Catholic lawyers once again came together this year after missing last year’s celebration because of the coronavirus pandemic, to pray for the opening of the judicial year 2022. The Mass held at St Joseph’s Cathedral on 12 February was presided by Archbishop Simon Poh, concelebrated by Fr Galvin Ngumbang and Fr Mark Bonchol. In extending a warm welcome to the small group of lawyers and their families to the newly refurbished Cathedral, Archbishop Simon said: “The Red Mass offers the legal community an opportunity to reflect on the God-given power

and responsibility of all in the legal profession and to uphold all who seek justice.” Archbishop Simon and the priests wore red coloured vestments because “liturgically, red is the colour of fire and of blood, symbolising the fire of the Holy Spirit and the blood of martyrs.” The Archbishop called on the lawyers to “invoke the gifts of the Holy Spirit, in particular for wisdom, understanding, counsel and fortitude for all our religious leaders and members of the legal profession… judges, lawyers, law school professors, law students, and government officials.” Reflecting on the Mass Reading from 1 Kings about the abuse of authority, Archbishop Simon in his homily, reconciled that to the current situation in the world. “What can religious and legal communities do? What does the Word of God tell us?” he asked.

He suggested that Christians: • Receive whatever we possess as a gift from God, including our heart, soul, mind and might. • Look upon the abundance of good things that surround us on earth as blessings to be shared. • Avoid selfish ambitions and unhealthy suspicious fears which always accompany such ambitions. • Be honest and admit our failures and learn from them rather than put the blame on someone else. The prelate said Christians should always be grateful and do things out of compassion and love, while at the same time to share our time, talents and treasures generously, so we may gain eternal life.

Invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit Archbishop Simon Poh told the lawyers to “invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit” in order “to

uphold all who seek justice and to build a civilisation and nation of goodwill, harmony, mutual respect and acceptance in our beloved Sarawak and our nation, Malaysia.” After the Eucharistic celebration, Archbishop Simon concluded the Red Mass with this advice from the teachings of prophet (Micah 6:8): “You have already been told what is right and what the Lord wants of you. Only this: to do what is right, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God,” which he ingeniously rearranged into the acronym L.A.W. L – Love tenderly A – Act justly W – Walk humbly with our God among the people “Do this, and you will be counted among the blessed and happy of the Lord,” the prelate counselled. Ivy Chai

KUCHING — The Archdiocese of Kuching’s livetelecast of the Chinese Lunar New Year Thanksgiving Mass from St Joseph’s Cathedral, was celebrated with a congregation of about 360 parishioners adhering to full pandemic SOPs on 1 February 2022. The Mass to usher in the year of the Tiger was presided by Archbishop Simon Poh with Archbishop Emeritus John Ha, Fr Galvin Ngumbang, Fr Mark Bonchol, Fr Alvin Ng, SJ and Fr Stanley Goh, SJ concelebrating. At the mixed Chinese and English language Mass, Archbishop Simon Poh in his homily, likened the Chinese New Year to a season of Spring with the growth of new life. “We use the character 春 Spring to celebrate new life,” he said.

The prelate explained that the thanksgiving Mass was “to give thanks to God, seek the Father’s will and his blessing that we may receive the true blessedness that comes from our Father.” He added that to find true everlasting happiness that our Father wants to give us, we have to follow the teachings of Jesus in the Beatitudes. Parishioners were pleasantly surprised to find red packets ‘ang pow’ and oranges placed at the pews for everyone. At the blessing of oranges, they held up their oranges so they could be blessed by the Archbishop. The celebratory Mass concluded with a dance performance to the music “Give Thanks”, presented by the Chinese youth. Online viewers were treated to a lion dance video from

St Joseph’s Private School lion dance troupe. Meanwhile, all other parishes in the Archdiocese of Kuching

also celebrated CNY Thanksgiving Masses for their communities. Some churches offered Masses on the eve of Chinese New Year so they could have separate English and Chinese language Masses for their English and Chinese speaking congregations.

Jesus should be the centre, the light of the world. We are not the centre. We should allow him to increase, and we should decrease. “In our missionary work, are we bringing Jesus and allow Him to increase and we decrease?” he

Pope: May Our Lady of Lourdes open our hearts to encounter VATICAN CITY— February 11 is the anniversary of the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous. 30 years ago, Saint John Paul II instituted the World Day of the Sick on this day of the solemnity of Our Lady of Lourdes to highlight the plight of the sick and to call the attention of health institutions, civil society and all believers, to those who take care of them. It is on this day that Pope Francis has sent a video message of participation and prayer to pilgrims gathered in Buenos Aires at a Shrine dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA — Twenty-three new priests were ordained on Friday in Seoul’s Myeongdong Cathedral, during a solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by Archbishop Peter Chung Soon-taick, O.C.D. He was accompanied in the celebration by Monsignor Fernando Reis, Chargé d’Affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in Korea, as well as Cardinal Andrew Yeom and the Archdiocese’s Auxiliary Bishops.

Live-streamed Mass The Mass, which was attended in-person only by the parents of the new priests—in full compliance with the South Korean government’s

Covid-19 protocols—was streamed live on the diocesan channel, Catholic Peace Broadcasting Corporation TV, and on its YouTube channel. At the end of the celebration, Archbishop Chung thanked God for making these ordinations possible. He also thanked the parents of the new priests, and all the pastors, nuns, teachers, and spiritual guides who helped them nurture their religious vocation. Archbishop Chung then expressed his gratitude to the seminary staff and benefactors who supported the newly ordained in their service to the Church.

Pope: We can all change and not be ‘buried’ by our past evil deeds VATICAN CITY — “Never reduce another to his or her mistake,” writes Pope Francis, because making a mistake “is an episode, a segment of life, not its unique and definitive condition.” On the contrary, he says, “it is necessary to help each person, with love, to move beyond his error.” The Pope makes this observation in the preface to Passiamo all’altra riva (“Let us pass to the other shore”; the title is taken from the Gospel of St Mark), a book-interview by Father Benito Giorgetta with Luigi Bonaventura, a former Mafioso now cooperating with the judiciary. Published directly by the author through the Youcanprint platform, the 194-page book has the subtitle “Switching life? There is another shore to reach in each one of us” and is based on the intense activity of the Italian priest from Molise, the pastor of San Timoteo in Termoli, a volunteer in the Larino prison and head of the Iktus family home that houses prisoners on probation, semi-release, or in the care of social services. With an afterword by Don Luigi Ciotti, founder of the association “Libera” which works against the abuses of the mafia throughout Italy, the work has an “added value” in the papal text that summarises the “frequent and striking magisterium” of Bergoglio

distracted with respect to what really counts. But it is also a seed sown in the lands most affected by the scourge of the Mafia. Just as every seed receives rain and is fertilised and germinates, so the testimony of a man of the Mafia can take root in the consciences and sensibilities of those who want a society where there is room for the rights of the person, legality, and dignity recognised for all, especially the weakest, most fragile, discarded, and marginalised.”

“imbued with the message of God’s mercy” towards prisoners, as explained by Don Benito.

Fraternal correction Above all, Pope Francis emphasises the importance of “fraternal correction” as a “gesture of love for one’s brother.” This does not mean, he clarifies, “feeling superior or better, but helping and assisting the other person to overcome their difficulties, shouldering their problem because they are weak, fragile; and if your shoulder is not there, he will collapse.” Moreover, he adds, “to correct means ‘to hold with’: not to reproach others for their sins, but, by being their neighbour, to help them overcome them, walking together towards healing or towards its beginning.” In fact, “the other will be healed because he has felt your love and has felt a longing to love.” What is more, “if you leave the other in his error, without correcting him, you become coresponsible; if you do not help him this is tantamount to a failure to help”; like that of those who witness road accidents and pass by without stopping. Sometimes, continues Pope Francis in his analysis, “one is almost afraid of being contaminated” by the wicked. Instead, “I must take an interest in them, take charge of them, do all I can to save them.” How? The Pope lists a series of practical,

"Passiamo all'altra riva" (English: "Let us pass to the other shore"), with a preface by Pope Francis.

concrete responses, as is his pastoral style. “First of all, I must give them what they need. Immediately. Love them with sincerity and then suffer for the sins they commit. And then pray for them, because prayer makes me God’s hand on them, the sign of His fatherly concern through my presence. The Holy Spirit will do the rest.” In short, the Pope suggests, “one must take a first step”, while “it is unworthy when a person looks down on another with an attitude of superiority.” “This finds a concrete example in the experience” of the interviewee, who has become, “with his courageous and risky choice a seed of hope sown in the furrows of a society caught up exclusively in its own affairs and its thousand commitments,

Glimmer of new life At the same time, “Bonaventura’s answerstestimonies are a rich exposition of the tormented life of a person who, indoctrinated and imbued with the Mafia, acted criminally; but they are also a glimmer of light and new life because, having abandoned the logic of abuse, Luigi opened up to a new vision.” Therefore, Pope Francis can conclude that “one can”, indeed “one must change, not remaining buried by the evil done; one can always pass to the other shore even if the navigation is tiring and full of dangers. The important thing is not to feel alone but accompanied. Just as Jesus said,” on the seashore “when He issued the invitation to the disciples, saying: ‘Let us go to the other shore’. Pope: May Beijing Olympics and Paralympics foster fraternity VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis sent warm greetings to participants in the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games that are about to open in Beijing on 4 February and 4 March, respectively. Speaking during the Wednesday General Audience, he sent wishes for success to both the organizers and the athletes. “Sport, with its universal language, can build bridges of friendship and solidarity between people and peoples of every culture and religion.” “I therefore appreciate that the International Olympic Committee has added the word ‘Communiter,’ meaning ‘Together’ to the historic Olympic motto ‘Citius, Altius, Fortius’, that is ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger’: so that the Olympic Games may nurture a more fraternal world,” he said. On 20 July 2021, the

important medal together if the example of the athletes with disabilities helps everyone to overcome prejudices and fears and to make our communities more welcoming and inclusive,” he said. This, Pope Francis said, “is the real gold medal!”

Session of the International Olympic Committee approved a change in the Olympic motto that recognises the unifying power of sport and the importance of solidarity. As Pope Francis explained, the change adds the word “together” after an en dash to “Faster, Higher, Stronger”

meaning that the new Olympic motto now reads in Latin “Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter.”

He concluded saying that he follows with attention and excitement the personal stories of athletes who are refugees. “May their testimonies help encourage civil societies to open up with ever greater confidence to all, leaving no one behind,” he said, wishing “the great Olympic and Paralympic family a unique experience of fraternity.” Vatican News

THE SACRAMENTS By Fr Patrick Heng THE SACRAMENTS is a series of teachings by Fr Patrick Heng Lesson 7 – The Sacrament of Holy Orders (Part 2) In the Catechism of the Catholic Church no.1210, it says “Christ instituted the sacraments of the new law. There are seven: Baptism, Conrmation (or Chrismation), the Eucharist, Penance, the Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders and Matrimony. The seven sacraments touch all the stages and all the important moments of Christian life: they give birth and increase, healing and mission to the Christian’s life of faith. There is thus a certain resemblance between the stages of natural life and the stages of the spiritual life.” The seven sacraments can be separated into three groups:

1. SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION which will bring a person into the full life of Christ (Baptism, Eucharist, Conrmation) 2. SACRAMENTS OF HEALING which heal both the soul and the body (Reconciliation, Anointing of the Sick) 3. SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT in which a person responds to a specic call of God (Marriage, Holy Orders) A brief history of the sacrament First four centuries In the early Christian community, the Apostles were the ones responsible to carry on Christ’s mission of preaching and teaching and of making Christ present to the people in the Eucharist. When administrative duties threatened to get in the way of these tasks, the Apostles chose seven men to be the first deacons (see Acts of the Apostles 6). As the community grew, different ministries were established. The ministries of apostles, prophets and teachers were especially important than the other ministries of healers, workers of miracles, helpers, administrators, and speakers of various tongues (1 Cor 12:28. Eph 4:11-13). These ministries have certain cultic power and different functions assigned. 1. The Twelve. They are the apostles par excellence, those who knew Jesus in person, followed the events of his human life from baptism to ascension, and received the Spirit of Pentecost. These men baptised; imposed hands that the Spirit may be given to neophytes or to bestow a mission or a ministry. They presided at the Eucharist, preached, made laws, excommunicated, and reconciled. All other ministries in the Church derive from theirs through participation and extension. The office of the Twelve cannot be passed on. What was passed on is their power to govern, teach and worship. 2. Apostles. These are not to be confused with the Twelve. The apostles were missionaries sent out from their communities, with authority suited to the nature of their mission. They were sent out two by two (Mark 6:7), with letters of authorisation (Acts 18:7); the communities receiving them were “to receive them as the Lord himself” (Gal 4:14). For their part, they were not to remain long in the same place—in the Didache (a first century document), it is not more than two days. They imposed hands in order to confer the rank of bishop-presbyter (2 Tim 1:6), to bestow the gift of the Spirit (Acts 19:6), and to heal the sick (Acts 28:8). One of their functions seems to have been to preside at the Eucharist (Acts 20:7-12). 3. Prophets. This was a very important ministry, even liturgically. Among their functions was authority to impose hands in order to confer a mission (Acts 13:3). The Didache, which provides a model for the Eucharistic Prayer, says that prophets must be free to “give thanks” as they wish. In fact, according to the Didache, the prophets are “your high priest” (13:3) and as such, they offered the first fruits of the harvest (13:1-2). 4. Teachers. With the evangelists they shared in the ministry of preaching and had the duty of preaching, proclaiming the gospel,

and of explaining the Scriptures. In the future, their role would be taken over primarily by the bishops and presbyters. 5. Elders (presbyters or episcopal). In the New Testament, the two terms were applied to the same person (Acts 20:17, 28). The first term (elders, presbyters) identified the ministry; the second (episcopal) pointed rather to an aspect of the ministry (vigilance). In the letter of James, the elders were summoned to pray and anoint the sick (Jam 5:14). Later, the Didache (15:1) ascribed to bishops and deacons to do what the prophets and teachers do, namely, to pray, give thanks, and teach. 6. Deacons. The first deacons were men appointed by the community of Jerusalem and invested in their office through the laying of hands by the apostles (Acts 6:3-6). Their task was the service of widows and the poor, especially service at table. There is no reference to a cultic service. 1 Timothy 3:8-13 gives a description of the true deacon but says nothing about his functions beyond a general kind of service. What is evidenced in the conferment of these ministries are two important elements which are the laying on of hands and a prayer. In the later centuries, these two elements are embellished with additional practices and elements. A third century document, the Apostolic Tradition (ca. 225) gives us the first complete ritual of ordinations of the early church. It shows a Church structured according to a strictly hierarchical ladder. At the top is the bishop, who has monarchic authority; around him, but on a lower rung, is the college of his presbyters, and, on still a lower rung, his deacons, who are dedicated primarily to the service of the altar and of the bishop. 1. Ordination of bishop. The bishop must be chosen and accepted by the entire people, the clergy and the authorities. Sunday is the day for ordination. The ministers of the ordinations are all the bishops present, the pastors of the neighbouring churches. At the laying of hands, all the bishops present impose their hands together upon the candidate; then the principal ordaining bishop imposes his hands while uttering the prayer of consecration. 2. Ordination of presbyters. Nothing is said about the election or choice of the candidate. The only thing prescribed for the rite of ordination was the laying on of hands by the bishop and the entire presbytery. But these two impositions do not have the same value as they had in the ordination of a bishop because a presbyter can only receive and not give; he can only “sign” (consignare), the bishop alone ordains. A prayer of ordination is then said by the bishop. 3. Ordination of a deacon. A deacon must be chosen and accepted by the people. The bishop alone imposes his hands on him, since he “is not ordained to the priesthood but to the service of the bishop, so that he will do what the bishop orders”. This is followed by the prayer of ordination. In the fourth century, the Syrian Apostolic Constitutions (Eastern rite, ca. 380) reflect some innovations: the laying of the Gospels on the head of the bishop being ordained and the laying of hands on subdeacon and lector as well. In addition, there are only three ordaining bishops who lay hands on the bishop-elect while the people voice their choice or confirm their acceptance three times. To be continued

Treat others as you would like them to treat you

Photo: goodsalt.com

The Golden Rule is a well-known maxim found in many religions and cultures, testifying to its universal applicability. It is also known as the ethic of reciprocity. According to Anthony Flew, a British philosopher who turned from atheist to deist, there are three types of the Golden Rule:1. Positive or directive form: Treat others as you would like them to treat you. This is the form that is used by Jesus. 2. Negative or prohibitive form: Do not treat others in ways that you would not like to be treated. 3. Empathetic or responsive form: What you wish upon others, you wish upon yourself. Some philosophers and writers, such as Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche and Bernard Shaw have objected to this rule by pointing out that how does one know how others would want to be treated? If your values are not shared with others, the way you want to be treated will not be the way they want to be treated. In another response, the author of the book, The Art of People, Dave Kerpen, came up with the Platinum Rule—treat others as

they would like to be treated themselves. It is because he opines that everyone is different, and how you want to be treated may be different from how others would want to be treated. According to Kerpen, when one follows the Platinum Rule, one can be sure that one is actually doing what the other person wants done and thus assures oneself of a better outcome. As to how we know what others would like to be treated, we can go by some universal values that all human beings hold onto, and which are over and beyond human living in the sense they are divine. These are mentioned by Jesus himself in today’s Gospel passage and applied in his own life, and thus can be used in the way we treat others. For as St Paul writes in his first letter to the Corinthians, we, who have been modelled on the earthly man Adam, will be modelled on the heavenly man Jesus. St Paul also says that the first man, Adam became a living soul; but the last Adam has become a life-giving spirit. Following the example of Jesus, we too can be life-giving spirits to others in the way we treat them. The values from the Gospel which we can use are:1. Love all beings and not only those who reciprocate our love. Jesus commands us, “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who treat you badly.” 2. Generosity – Jesus implores us, “To the one who slaps you on one cheek, present the other cheek too; to the one who takes your cloak from you, do not refuse your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you (and there will be gifts for you).” 3. Compassion – Jesus gives us an example, “Be compassionate as your Father is compassionate. Do not judge, do not condemn, forgive.” There is even a saying, “To forgive is divine.” From experience, we know it is very difficult to forgive, especially when the hurt remains. Therefore, we need God’s grace to help us forgive others. If we want others to forgive us, we need to forgive them. A concrete example of the way we can treat others is how David did not kill Saul, who is the Lord’s anointed, in his own camp when the opportunity arrived. Today’s reading is his second opportunity—the first was in a cave. Saul had been pursuing David in order to kill him. David himself was anointed by Samuel the prophet but his time had not come for the kingship of Israel until the death of Saul, and Saul’s death should not be under the hand of David. David still respects Saul as king even though Saul keeps on persecuting him. This shows that David was not a mere opportunist. He held on to the universal value of compassion and respect. In the same way, when we are maligned by certain people, we do not wish bad on them or retaliate against them. We see ourselves in them and would like them to treat us in the way we treat them.

TODAY’S CATHOLIC FEBRUARY 2022

Hello kids! It is February 2022. Were any of your New Year resolutions achieved last month? To all our Chinese friends, we wish you a very Happy Chinese New Year! May this year bring all of us the best of health, joy and peace.

Love, JoySome Siblings THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD: is the feast day to commemorate the revelation of the most awaited Saviour the world. Read the short story below.

BRING JESUS TO SIMEON: Who is Simeon? Find more about him in Luke 2:22-40.

Dear St Valentine, help us to love unselfishly and to find great joy in giving. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord takes place 40 days after Christmas, which is 2 February. According to Jewish law, if the firstborn child was a male, the infant would be given, or consecrated, to God. The parents would also make a sacrificial offering of either a lamb or two turtledoves. But wait… Jesus is, was, and always will be the True God! Why does he need to be consecrated to himself? This was a time of great anxiety for the Holy Family. They trusted God, “but they did not understand what he said to them… his mother kept all these things in her heart” (Lk 2:50-51). Not knowing how they should care for the Son of God, Joseph and Mary clung to the tradition of their faith and did everything according to God’s Law. As such, we find them coming to the Temple to present Jesus.

ST. VALENTINE Feast day: 14 February

Sibu youth produces comic on Christus Vivit SIBU — The youth from the Diocese of Sibu has produced a comic with reections and stories based on Christus Vivit (CV) Christ is Alive, a post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation from Papa Francis on young people, faith and vocation discernment. Inspired by Pope Francis, the local youth of Sibu Diocese have come together to produce a wonderful comic. Each chapter has a story line, remark, reection, personal prayer and prayer intention. “CV was published on 2 April, 2019 and all the dioceses were encouraged to guide our young people to read the document. However, many of our young people were not keen to read it. The diocesan youth committee

then came together to discuss and search for ways to make it more attractive to the youth,” explained Anna Faustina Ding, the former youth minister of Sibu Diocese. “It was suggested and agreed that each committee member be assigned to create a short story for a chapter from CV. Five were involved in the process. Then we would approach our young people who are good in art to help to turn the story into a comic,” said Anna. After nine stories were completed, the committee checked the content while Fr Kulanthai Selvan, CMF, Ecclesiastical Assistant for the youth in Sibu and Anna worked on the reection question for each chapter. Once the nal story was completed, the team approached

our local youth to choose any chapter that they could turn into a comic. There were seven young artists who worked on the nine chapters Some were able to produce two chapters, while others, one chapter. When everything was completed—proofreading etc., Anna then did the compilation and nal edition.

(Henry anak

SAKRAMEN Oleh Fr Patrick Heng SAKRAMEN ialah siri pelajaran oleh Fr Patrick Heng

Ajaran 7 – Sakramen Kepaderian (Bahagian 2) Dalam Katekisme Gereja Katolik No. 1210, ia menyebut “Kristus menetapkan sakramen-sakramen bagi undang-undang baharu.

Dalam satu lagi reaksi, penulis buku The Art of People, Dave Kerpen, mengusulkan Perintah Platinum—layan orang lain seperti mereka sendiri ingin dilayan.

Saya ingin membahagikan buah kiran saya bersama anda mengenai Tahun Baharu Cina 2022.

Tahun Harimau – 王 Raja haiwan-haiwan

Kebahagiaan Yang Tulen dalam Khutbah Ucapan Bahagia (Beatitudes) 真福八段
