Let me tell you a secret: THE POWER IS WITHIN YOU! Your Business Plan can lead to Your Business Breakthroug h
Teaching others how to treat you
How to handle rejection
Why do some businesses thrive while others falter? There are many reasons, not the least of which involves paying attention to all the inputs into and the outputs from your business. Setting goals is important, but also qualifying which priorities to focus on can be equally important.
I work with my clients to help them focus on two categories of activities in their business plan:
1. Revenue-producing activities
2. Foundational activities
Revenue-producing activities are those that result in bringing in revenue to your business - sometimes immediate and sometimes with a longer lead time – but revenue that helps cover your expenses and fuels your growth.
Foundational activities are those that you must undertake in a systematic way to produce revenue, create efficiencies, keep up with or pass your competition, or differentiate yourself in the marketplace. They aren’t always apparent to you, but if you construct your business plan properly, they can be identified and can be scheduled within any given quarter or year.
I help small- to medium-sized businesses create their plan in a way that is not intimidating, but rather helps them get and stay motivated.
Do you have your business plan? And if so, does it contain a mix of these two types of activities?

Your Business Plan can lead to Your Business Breakthrough!
Plans can appear intimidating for many small- to medium-sized business owners – but I’ve found a solution that has worked beautifully with my clients.
I don’t dictate to my clients, but rather gently tease out their aspirations – what do they want from their business? This year, next, in 3-5 years?
Let’s face it, we usually already have ideas in our head regarding where we’d like to take our business. What if I had a process to help you explore those thoughts and bring them into your plan in a realistic way?
We then do a gap analysis identifying what is missing from where you are today and where you want to go. Not too scary so far, right? We round out our work by mapping out goals, initiatives, action steps, a timeline, and establish ownership for each of the initiatives.
The final plan is all about you and is something you created, so it feels like something you can use to accomplish what you want!

When you aren’t feeling especially powerful, just remember…THE POWER IS ALREADY WITHIN YOU!
Yes, I know it seems counterintuitive sometimes, but I was just talking to a client this week about this.
She shared approaches she had used in the past to get through difficult interactions.
I then used her own evidence to point out that she did know how to get the results she needed without compromising herself in the process. You also have the power – just review your experiences!
We were talking about an approach to difficult situations that she felt illequipped to handle. She is quite the empath and was worried that she couldn’t have tough conversations or deliver negative news. We then went on to speak about how she handled some different situations in the past.
I know what I’m about to say can be controversial, but here goes…
“Not all rejection is personal”
Rejection can feel very personal. Much of that can be fueled by two factors:
1. The style of the person delivering it, and
2. The story we tell ourselves
Some people communicate rejection in an abrupt way – usually indicative of their style. They may need more information, or they may have dismissed your approach before. However, we don’t take steps to qualify the rejection – is it temporary or permanent? Do they need more time or more information?
I always recommend trying to qualify the rejection through clarifying questions BEFORE you choose to interpret it as something you did wrong.
“HOW TO HANDLE REJECTION”
It is truly possible… Start with asking for exactly what you want – don’t be vague. What are some other ways you can train others to work well with you?
1. Be clear in your communication. Tell others exactly what you expect as well as your timetable for responses
2. Model the behavior you wish to see from others – treat them with respect and make it clear you expect the same
3. Don’t allow others to ramble and waste your time – redirect a conversation back to what you need or to the items that they need from you in order to remain productive
4. When you are resolute in a decision, don’t allow yourself to be swayed based on the opinions of others. Even if you wish to entertain what they have to say, you can still let them know your decision is solid.
5. If you have been engaged in a communication that didn’t go well for you, feel free to re - engage and state your preferences or expectations.
Remember, consistency and predictability leads to a higher level of effective interactions .
Find a business planning process that doesn’t overwhelm you, but provides the structure and details that you need to succeed
Categorize some business activities as “Revenue-Producing” and focus on those to cover your expenses and fuel growth
Identify some of your business activities as “Foundational” –those you need to prepare for the future
Rejection isn’t always about you or what you did wrong. Consider the other person’s style or what you might believe about yourself
Teach others how to treat you through modeling the behavior, setting expectations, and communicating clearly and begin to get different results
