POWER TALK FOR WOMEN Magazine JANUARY 2023 EDITION How to Use Silence as a Power Move What if You Said “Yes” More Often? Finding the Right Executive Coach for You

Themes from my Clients and the Business Media…

Employees appear to have more control and leverage than ever before. There has been a substantial shift over a number of years – certainly exacerbated by the pandemic. Traditional professional roles have been hard hit, such as accounting. Recent reports indicate that students were excited regarding their accounting studies, but the real-life application of them in the workforce left them feeling uninspired. That’s just one example!

“Your leadership style has to be more versatile than ever to meet the challenges of today’s workforce and hybrid work environments” Tin3a

And it’s not just the professionals or staff. Recently, I heard a CEO of a growing company speak to his commitment to “not leading in fear”. He had observed leaders who were reluctant to share feedback for fear of upsetting the team members – who might decide to quit.

As leaders, we must continue to operate with transparency and strive toward excellence in delivery of our products or services.

And in one final example, wait until the dust (or snow) settles over the holiday travel issues, particularly for Southwest Airlines. We will definitely see lots of changes taking place – not only for staff and key leadership positions, but also in the areas of key processes and the technology and infrastructure necessary to run such a critical operation.

Most of my clients see the value of stepping back and making the necessary investments and/or enhancements to their processes to position them to get to the next level.

How are you responding to some of these challenges?

HOW TO USE SILENCE AS A

POWER MOVE

We are all creatures of habit, right? How many times have you already been thinking of what you want to say as someone else is speaking? Or, do you jump into a conversation in a meeting, but your idea isn’t fully formed yet?

Both situations can put you at a disadvantage!

We should all be practicing Active Listening when others are speaking. This gives us the best chance of understanding the topic being discussed AND allows us to formulate our next response AFTER hearing the conversation. We can’t allow our desire to speak up quickly get in the way.

Being “SILENT” for a moment allows you to take everything in. It’s the best way to give yourself time to process what you have heard. And, sometimes you need to wait to speak to allow others to process what they have heard.

Have you ever been around someone who constantly feels the need to fill any silence?

“THE FIRST ONE TO TALK LOSES…”

This is a quote that often comes up when we speak about negotiations. Most great negotiations take place as a complex dance of two parties –both trying to get what they want in the deal. This is where strategic silence can really make a difference.

When you start to practice a bit of strategic silence in your interactions with others, it can be a way to build a deeper level of trust with them. It can also change the way others perceive you.

AND finally – SILENCE can be seen as a POWER MOVE! It can be an interpretation of your authority. It can also give you some additional power as others await how you will weigh in. Try it and let me know how it works!

What does saying “yes” do for you?

If your first inclination is to say “no”, what if you make an intentional decision to start saying “yes”? I’m not asking you to say “yes” indiscriminately, but to say “yes” when something feels right - but you hesitate out of fear.

Intriguing concept, right? Read on…

IF

IT’S NOT A

“HELL YES”, THEN IS IT A “NO”?

Does this happen to you?

You say yes out of guilt or obligation and then leave a conversation wondering why you agreed to something that you don’t want to do.

Setting boundaries can be healthy way to stop you from always saying “yes”. You can evaluate whether a “yes” serves what you want from a situation. It is perfectly fine to want to say “yes” to do something nice for someone, but do so with the understanding of ”why” you said yes and then go with it.

Sometimes you can say yes without having all the information you need to know if you are giving the right response.

A “Hell Yes” is different. It tells you that you have absolutely no hesitation in saying “yes”. It feels right from the beginning. You can also picture yourself successfully engaged in both the activity and the outcomes from that “Hell Yes”. If you can, you know it’s the right thing and it deserves your attention and engagement.

WHEN YOU SAY “YES” MORE OFTEN

Saying “yes” more often can open you up to new possibilities. I’ve tried this and have been surprised by what happened!

What if you took a breath before responding to something. That tiny break gives your brain a moment to consider something different.

‘”You never say yes to anything’– Six startling words. That’s the beginning. That’s the start of it all…”

Shonda Rhimes’ book, The Year of Yes, details her journey of spending an entire year saying “yes”. It is an inspiring, scary, and rewarding story of putting yourself out there and seeing what happens.

It’s a great concept! I was inspired to try it when I found myself with some unidentifiable resistance. I have been truly surprised by how well things turn out. Go ahead – try it! Click on the image to order...
