NEWS Ojai Valley Family Shelter gearing up for winter warming OVFS winter shelter at the Grange again

n addition to the shelters that operate year-round, winter warming shelters offer a much needed resource for unhoused individuals as the weather turns cold. But the availability of these winter warming shelters has been impacted by the pandemic, limiting the availability of warm beds.

Two warming shelters that are gearing up for the season are the Simi Valley-based Public Action to Deliver Shelter or PADS winter sleep program and the Ojai Valley Family Shelter. Both require that the people they serve are from their communities and either became homeless when living in the immediate area or have been an unhoused person there for some time, or otherwise have some kind of connection to the community

Warming up the Grange

Prior to the pandemic the Ojai Valley Family Shelter (OVFS) would rotate its location between several churches in the Ojai Valley.

Volunteers from that church and the community at large would prepare and serve a delicious hot meal, and usually a fun movie would be shown before lights out.

As a result of the pandemic, having to prepare seven different locations every week became a real challenge. But the organization was committed to opening the shelter and leased the Ojai Grange building to serve as the single location each night for the winter shelter.

The building was outfitted with beds and dividers and cameras for security concerns, and the shelter was able to operate.

This year the OVFS will again be leasing the grange building and relies on community volunteers and local church groups to prepare the dinners and staff the shelter each night.

The winter shelter operates from Dec. 1 through the end of March and those wishing to stay in the shelter must have a tuberculosis (TB) screening clearance and have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19. In addition, shelter guests must show proof of prior/current residency in the Ojai Valley or otherwise be able to demonstrate a connection to the Ojai Valley.

When the winter shelter is closed during spring, summer and fall, the OVFS operates a mobile shower van twice a week. On Wednesdays and Sundays, the shower van, managed by Ally Mills, will park at either St. Andrews Epis-

copal (Saturday) or Ojai Presbyterian (Wednesday) and provide hot showers and other resources to those in need. Most shower days, Ojai Valley resident Jerry Schwanke takes to the church’s griddle to prepare a hot pancake breakfast.

The shower days and winter shelter serves from two up to about a dozen or so people each time. Men, women and families are welcome.

Like many nonprofit organizations, the OVFS relies heavily on volunteers and several volunteer positions are open, including coordinators for the winter shelter and food coordinators, who schedule and organize volunteer cooks and ensure that meals are well managed. www.ojaivalleyfamilyshelter.com

ne in six residents of Ventura County report experiencing food insecurity, according to Food Share of Ventura County. This means that they or their family are without reliable access to enough affordable, healthy food on a consistent basis. Food insecurity can be a regular state of being for some, or it can be sporadic based on changes in income or family structure.

Churches and other organizations across Ventura County provide food pantry services and/or meals to those in need.

Nonprofit Spotlight An interview with Housing Trust Fund VC’s Linda Braunschweiger

T

he high cost of living in Ventura County makes it difficult for many people to afford safe and secure housing. The Housing Trust Fund of Ventura County aims to change that. The organization is essentially a nonprofit bank that provides loans to developers creating houses and apartments priced for extremely low-income individuals and families. CEO Linda Braunschweiger answered some questions for the Ventura County Reporter to explain the organization’s role in helping military veterans, the homeless, farmworkers and more obtain safe, clean, reliable housing.

This interview has been edited for space and clarity.

What, in a nutshell, is the Housing Trust Fund?

The Housing Trust Fund Ventura County, a nonprofit bank, is the local trusted leader in helping to increase affordable housing options throughout Ventura County by leveraging public-private partnerships to provide low-cost, flexible loans early in the housing development cycle. We prioritize the funding of affordable housing units for veterans, transitional age foster youth, homeless individuals and families, farmworkers, and low to extremely low income individuals and families.

How did HFT come to exist?

Housing Trust Fund Ventura County (Housing Trust Fund VC) was created in 2008 as a nonprofit to respond to the needs of affordable housing developments, which often experience funding gaps during the planning or construction phases. By 2016, Housing Trust Fund VC had become a state Certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and in 2018 it earned its Federal CDFI Certification, receiving financial support from federal, state and county government, including all 10 cities in Ventura County, as well as foundations, private industry and individuals.

Ventura County continues to face a critical housing crisis. The lack of available housing that is affordable in Ventura County is having a negative impact on the quality of life throughout our region. Local home prices and rental rates continue to outpace the incomes of many Ventura County residents. Without housing that is affordable to a range of income levels, Ventura County residents and businesses will continue to suffer from an overcrowding of public infrastructure and services, and a stagnant economy.

While a regional housing trust fund is not the sole solution to the housing crisis in Ventura County, it is a powerful tool that draws developers and increases the opportunities of residents countywide to access decent, safe, affordable housing. Ensuring our residents can afford the roof over their heads and still have enough money to put food on the table, while meeting other needed expenses, is a goal that Housing Trust Fund Ventura County remains committed to every day.

Tell us about some of the projects HTFVC has accomplished.

Since 2012 Housing Trust Fund VC has funded or committed to fund over $18.7 million in approved loans, $8.825 million in 2021 alone. This has resulted in the production or planned production of 847 affordable apart-

ments and homes throughout Ventura County.

In 2021 we committed $8.825 million in funding for developments, including: o Second and B Street Homeless Solutions Center in Oxnard. A collaborative project by the city of Oxnard, Community Development Partners, and Mercy House, the center will provide a 110-bed homeless shelter and 55 affordable housing units. Importantly, this center will be constructed on the first land ever donated by the city of Oxnard to Housing Trust Fund VC’s supportive nonprofit, the newly formed Housing Land Trust Ventura County. o Westview Village II in Ventura. This is a project by the Housing Authority of the City of San Buenaventura that replaces the city’s oldest and largest public housing complex with four new development phases spanning 20.6 acres.

Westview Village II is the second phase and will specifically provide 50 senior housing units. o Veterans Springs in Ventura. A project

by A Community of Friends, this multi- and single-family complex will provide 122 new affordable residences for Veterans and their families.

How many people use HTF’s services?

Housing Trust Fund VC works directly with both nonprofit and for-profit developers from all over California. Through our funding and the work of the developers, we estimate that approximately 2,500 individuals have benefited by receiving clean, safe, affordable housing.

How does HTF carry out its mission?

In this era of limited resources, Housing Trust Funds, like Housing Trust Fund Ventura County, are able to attract capital from sources not traditionally dedicated to housing. They leverage these funds by combining private resources with foundation, corporate, individual, and public agency funds to build a revolving loan fund dedicated to expanding affordable and workforce housing. Housing Trust Fund VC loans are often made early in the development cycle before traditional funding is available and thus provides the financial support and credibility necessary to attract other money.

Since 2012, Housing Trust Fund Ventura County has successfully raised $15.9 million in support of the development of quality affordable housing in our community, including a $4 million Proposition 1 match.

What kinds of fundraising activities does HTF use to bring in money?

Unlike most housing trust funds funded solely through public means, funds supporting Housing Trust Fund VC come from a number of public, private and corporate sources, including: o Earned revenue from loan fees and interest. o Local government funding from the county of Ventura and all 10 cities in the county. o State of California Housing Bond Funds approved by the voters via Proposition 1c and Proposition 1. o Federal funds (grants) from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund. o Businesses, corporations, foundations and individual donations. o The annual Compassion Campaign signature fundraising event.

How do you find projects to fund?

I work closely with city housing departments, housing professionals, community groups and advocates to find potential opportunities for the development of affordable housing. We have a long-standing reputation among developers who know us to be solid trustworthy partners taking seriously our role of expanding our financial resources through responsible financial stewardship, and we are creative in our pairing of non-traditional funds with flexible financial products that offer below-market interest rates. We work together to ensure Ventura County has the needed housing for everyone who calls our community home.

What are some of the biggest challenges involved in carrying out HTFVC’s mission?

The sheer size of the need. For at least the last 10 years, California and Ventura County have not built enough housing units to meet the growing needs of our community. Today, Housing Trust Fund VC has a pipeline of potential housing projects seeking over $40 million of Housing Trust Fund VC’s loan funds. We need more lending capital to ensure each of those important affordable housing units are built and become homes for those who need it most.

Also, with more lending capital from grants and investments, the Trust Fund can bring back to Ventura County $25 million in matching funds from Sacramento through the Proposition 1

What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your job?

I love my work! As the founding CEO, I have been able to create, with the Housing Trust Fund VC Board, an entity that is creative, nimble, flexible, solid, valued and, best of all, seeks to provide homes for all. Watching an individual or family receive the keys to their new, safe, clean housing always makes me emotional.

The trajectory of that person’s life is changed forever. There is a newfound confidence within each resident as I watch them walk taller, exude pride, and see a future for themselves and their family that allows them to dream bigger.

What are some things you wish people knew about HTFVC that they probably don’t?

Every person, no matter their heritage, financial means, education level, work status, a family of one or more, healthy or unwell, have the same desire to feel safe, secure and comfortable in their home. The success of our individual communities hinges on every resident having a voice and equal say in how the collective community thrives. Fur Therapy VIP Dog Teams trains therapy-facility dogs

emember those historic photographs of Dalmatian dogs sitting atop fire engines, serving as mascots for fire stations? Well, in addition to being a great community ambassador, dogs provide great comfort to people of all ages working in challenging and stressful situations.

More and more researchers are finding scientific proof of what those who spend their lives with dogs (and other animals, too) already know: They help bring a sense of calm and happiness.

One local organization is working to bring more dogs into these environments to help kids and adults.

VIP Dog Teams is a Camarillo-based nonprofit organization with the mission of promoting the human-animal bond that transforms lives and leads to healing by fostering positive interactions with therapy and facility dogs. Nancy Mitchell, president and head trainer, says the organization is currently actively seeking community members interested in being dog handlers to bring a specially trained therapy/facility dog into their workplace.

“VIP Dog Teams would love to place a school therapy/facility dog in any school that sees the healing power of a dog,” she said. Dogs are generally placed with physical, occupational and speech therapists as well as firefighters. Ideally there would be two co-handlers working together.

Mitchell, who lives in Camarillo, is a registered nurse and teaches nurses at California State University, Channel Islands. She’s been training dogs for six years and is certified with the American Kennel Club as a Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) evaluator. She founded VIP Dog Teams in 2016, “after having a difficult time trying to find a service dog for my own special needs son. I ended up training a dog for him and we decided a therapy dog was a better fit for him.”

dog brought to students and the confidence bringing a trained therapy dog on visits gave my son. I wanted to do this for more people, so I started VIP Dog Teams . . . I am an RN, baby nurse . . . so babies and puppies, what could be better?”

A certified therapy dog is generally the personal pet of their handler, who takes the dog to places where the dog can comfort or support those in need. The work is not limited to people who have recognized disabilities.

The dogs generally go through basic obedience training, and it’s recommended they take a Therapy Prep Class to be assessed for obedience and temperament, making sure the dog is a good match for this type of work. Once a handler and dog pass a Therapy Dog Test, they can be registered with an organization offering therapy dog services.

The added training for facility dogs is designed for preparing the dog to help professionals in their workplace with achieving goals with those the handler is serving.

Teachers, therapists, medical providers and first responders are typically those who would partner with a facility dog to help people. In physical therapy situations, for example, a dog can help motivate the patient to pick up a ball to play with the dog, or throw a ball farther.

The dog becomes part of the therapy to help meet therapeutic goals.

Similarly, in a school setting, dogs can encourage students in new ways. Sometimes a nonverbal student may want to talk about the dog, or playing with the dog becomes a way to socialize with peers. The simple act of being calmed by the presence of a dog like Mitch, a Goldendoodle with VIP Dog Teams, allows some students to focus more easily on classroom tasks and activities.

Making the grade

Puppies under consideration by VIP Dog Teams are observed closely from birth.

“We like the social butterfly puppy . . . We look for overall temperament. We test at seven weeks because puppies can have a fear period at eight weeks and we typically send puppies to their new homes at eight weeks old.”

She said puppies are tested for over 10 different traits.

“The big three seem to be retrieving, [it] shows a dog’s willingness to please and work with you. Quick recovery from startling experiences.” Mitchell explained that dogs will be placed in various situations and “need to be comfortable and enjoy interacting. And lastly, but very importantly, social attraction: Does the pup enjoy being touched and giving-getting attention?”

As a puppy Mitch lived with a puppy-raiser family who agreed to “take on the task of raising and training a puppy in their home, knowing they would release it around a year and a half old to go to his job.”

The Millers were Mitch’s family; members attended training sessions with VIP Dog Teams every week and Mitch’s training progressed.

Mitch will be two in January and has been in training since he was eight weeks old. He was temperament tested at seven weeks and showed the desirable traits. He passed his puppy classes, both standard and advanced CGC levels, and a therapy preparation class with the Millers.

In June, when he was a year and a half old, he went to live with his handler, Melissa Kasso, a school counselor at Rancho Rosal Elementary School in Camarillo. Mitch got two months to settle in and build trust with his

new handler before more advanced training work.

Mitch had to pass all the same levels he’d already passed with the Millers with his new handler before moving onto advanced training and testing.

With all that training and testing under his collar, Mitch started his new job as a school therapy/facility dog at Rancho Rosal.

Mitchell said that “utilizing canine assistants in schools for mental health is becoming more wide-spread,” as the benefits of therapy/ facility dogs on campus are becoming apparent. They appear to give a big morale boost for

“Mitch is so popular at this school that the teachers email the school counselor and reserve him. He makes his way to each and every classroom that has requested him.”

On the job

Research, including a study completed at Yale University, has demonstrated the cognitive, physiological and emotional benefits dogs can have on people of all ages.

But one hurdle the organization is working to overcome relates to finding puppy raisers.

“We have a very limited number of people willing to be puppy raisers,” Mitchell confirmed.

VIP Dog Teams is looking for responsible people in the community who would be willing to take on the task of raising a puppy from eight weeks old to one and a half years and commit to doing all the necessary training along the way, with the understanding that the dog go will ultimately go on to live with its handler.

The organization is also “functionally breeding” for the special traits required by therapy dogs. Mitchell explained that they select a “very particular therapy mama dog,” who is bred with “a therapy/facility dog dad to produce potential working therapy/ facility puppies.”

Recently, a litter of puppies was born that are likely to have the traits needed for this

specialized work.

Before VIP began breeding tried-and-true therapy/facility dogs, the group rescued “very carefully tested dogs” from the Ventura County Animals Services shelter in Camarillo. The dogs were placed with inmates at the Todd Road Jail in Santa Paula for a training program.

Four dogs were trained every six months, and 16 dogs graduated from the program.

“We ran the program for two years and had an 80% success rate,” Mitchell said. “These dogs were adopted by the public and most are doing meet-and-greet therapy in our community.”

grams at the Camarillo Boys and Girls Club for teens and young kids. The therapy dogs help the teens explore various themes like trust, teamwork, communication and leadership, with each teen handling a dog during the session. For the younger kids, the dogs help them practice high-frequency reading words using games and one-on-one time.

Dogs are rarely judgmental when a child makes a mistake, and many times the students are more comfortable taking risks and trying things when working with the dogs than they’d be when working with teachers.

Volunteers bring their dogs to these sessions to play sight word games. The children show a considerable retention following the sessions with the dogs, compared to assessment prior to the sessions.

Currently, VIP Dog Teams is “focused on facility and goal-oriented therapy dogs. We have been training approximately four dogs a year.” With functional breeding for the desired traits, Mitchell added that “we can train even more dogs. We need to find people who want to utilize these dogs for facility and/or therapy work and have the time and effort to train with us. I feel like the general public just doesn’t know we are here, but we are and we want to work with those interested in the healing power of a dog.” www.vipdogteams.org November 24, 2021 —

I

f you could use one phrase to describe John Grimaldo and House Arrest, it’s old-school East Los Angeles with a beat. Featuring seven to nine pieces, including horns, the band’s style varies from rock to R&B to jazz to cumbia (a Mexican genre played specifically for dancing, which traces its roots to Columbia, Cuba and even German polka music). It’s a sound that Grimaldo describes as “raw, down-to-earth dancing.”

Grimaldo is from the San Fernando Valley, and recalls that, in the ’50s and ’60s, there was music everywhere. “Growing up in Pacoima, there was a band on every other block.”

Pacoima was also the hometown of Chicano rock pioneer Ritchie Valens . . . who happened to be best friends with Grimaldo’s father. And there were musicians in the family as well, like his grandfather, Ignacia Benavides and his sister, a recording artist in East L.A. When he was young, Grimaldo came across an old, broken steel guitar a family member had tossed out. Determined to play like his grandpa, he mended the guitar using two-by-fours. According to Grimaldo, it was music that saved him from the clutches of the “Pachucos” (gang members) when he was in junior high school. “They found out I played music and left me alone,” he said.

Grimaldo’s cultural influences were two-fold: guitars and cars. In his day, they were inseparable. Like the Beach Boys and surf, he collected cars and wrote songs about his local car culture. He still drives his own classic, a 1950 Chevy Panel called Trigger.

He launched his music career in the 1960s with some original songs. As a Latino artist, it was tough to be taken seriously. Record companies considered his style of music a non-starter, and Grimaldo

I remember my first experience putting my hands in the soil and watching radishes come out of the soil,” said Erynn Smith, a resident of Ventura. “It began this lifelong love affair with soil and tending soil and the miracle of soil and the miracle of tending life.”

That love affair began with her involvement with The Abundant Table, a Latinx and women-led nonprofit workers collective focused on workers’ rights, justice, healthy eating and sustaining the land.

“Farmers are the heart of the organization,” said Smith, now an Abundant Table board member. “Tending the land is the heart of the organization. What our community is asking is, how can we best support the farm and the farmers?”

The Fillmore-based certified organic farm was founded in 2009. Their mission is significant and sweeping: They seek to change the way consumers think about farming through social justice, farm education and creating a connection with the land.

Re-connecting to the land

Several months ago, the farm relocated from the McGrath family farm property in Camarillo to a 3.6 acre plot of land on the King and King Ranch in Fillmore.

The change has taken some getting used to, said Smith and Guadalupe Rojas, an Abundant Table farmer. Each new land they work with offers different soil conditions, microclimates and pests. Even a small alteration in the environment changes what kind of crops the land can naturally yield and also calls for alternative approaches to weeding and pest control.

Smith, who regularly helps out on the farm, and Rojas said that with the convenience of commercialized farming, consumers have grown disconnected from where their food comes from.

Rojas, whose native language is Spanish and was translated by Smith, said, “That’s always been our mission, bringing consciousness about our relationship to the land, each other and ourselves. It is growing food but it’s also deeper than growing food, it brings you into a relationship with other beings on the land.”

Part of how they’re achieving their goal is by bringing people onto the farm to work with the soil and see where exactly their food comes from. They hope that raising this awareness will gradually change the farm system as a whole and bring the farming industry and public back to the roots of natural food production. Their farmbased education program in particular allows students of all ages to visit the farm and interact with the farm’s ecosystem.

can really have an impact on their lives and the lives around that child,” Rojas said.

The Abundant Table also offers a community supported agriculture program, or CSA, through which members can get a weekly box of organic, seasonally grown local produce for $30.

Spiritual roots

The organization began as a campus ministry with a small group of students at the California State University, Channel Islands and a small plot of land in Port Hueneme. Between the collective efforts and resources of founders Sarah Nolan, Julie Morris and Paul DeBusschere, The Abundant Table was able to offer a space in which interns could live, work the land and explore faith-rooted land healing and farm worker justice.

Though the founding ministry was Christian based, the members of the Farm Church, an Abundant Table community, emphasize that their faith is nonsecular. All beliefs and backgrounds are welcome; the heart of their spirituality is the earth.

Jeannette Ban, a Farm Church member and

former intern and farm coordinator, said, “It’s impossible to separate the mysteries and magic and the inherent spirituality of farming from the actual practice of it. Instead of dominating the land and changing it completely, we try to be in synergy with it and grow as partners.”

Abundant Table’s aim is to interfere with the land’s natural processes as little as possible.

Farmers and other workers avoid using pesticides in favor of introducing beneficial insects to the environment and only grow produce that the land naturally grows itself. Typically, the most abundant crops are carrots and lettuce, but the harvest is regularly changing.

“Folks often don’t have a sense of how hard it is to grow with the season,” Rojas said. “We don’t have actual teachers teaching us. The best teacher that we have had is Mother Earth herself. Mother Earth has taught us what we can grow in different places and what we can grow in different seasons.”

The farm works on a surprisingly small scale.

At one point, the farm had upward of 20 employees between the board of directors and farmers.

These days, they have about five people on the board and three farmers. The positions, however, are not stagnant; the farmers sit in on board meetings and the board members offer a hand in the field when they can.

About two years ago, a mini revolution took place when the farmers voiced their need to be more included in the decisions that were being made. Thus began the transition to a workers’ collective. Though the conversation is ongoing, the objective for the farm is to function democratically, with all staff having an equal say in the decisions being made.

“You can’t look at the food system, you can’t look at the farms, without looking at race-class dynamics,” Smith said. “I am glad to be in an organization that wants to really wrestle with that and actually center the voices of the farm team in decision making.”

The Abundant Table upholds at its core.

“The crux of the issue was being able to have decision making authority and there was a lot of support for that,” Rojas said.

The Abundant Table also intends to help bridge the racial and class gap by offering subsidized CSA boxes, providing fair wages for its workers, maintaining awareness about how farmers are treated and remembering the Chumash who owned the land before.

“The Abundant Table community is largely white, middle-class folk and the farm field is mainly Latinx folk and there’s a lot of reckoning with the realities of that,” Ban admitted. “Racial justice is something that we as a culture are going to be wrestling with for the rest of our lives, and our children after us will continue to wrestle with that.”

The Abundant Table is fiscally supported by individual donations, grants from departments like the USDA and CDFA and most importantly by its CSA boxes. Demand for the boxes went from 75 a week to almost 300 a week after COVID-19 began last year, due to fear that consumers would not be able to purchase nonlocal food.

During the pandemic, the farm kept farmers safe by having regular conversations about mask mandates and social distancing. Staff wanted to ensure that their farmers felt safe and willing to continue their work.

Though events and volunteering opportunities have been reduced due to COVID, The Abundant Table hopes to make them regular occurrences again once everyone has fully settled into their new farm in Fillmore. People can also get involved with the community through the Farm Church group, which has regular outside gatherings and a Facebook group.

“This farm, in terms of its community, is growing around the farmer and that farmer’s relationships to the land,” Smith said. “The space here allows us to build really authentic and meaningful and, dare I say, transformational relationships.

That is why you have people who have been really committed to this, to each other and to land for 12 years through all of the ups and downs.”
