May is for Mom. No question about that. See’s Candies helps send the message. A spring bouquet is not a bad start. But what Mom wants is a new Range Rover. (Ha!) Really what Mom does want is for you to just be there with her, sitting at her table, telling a story or two, remembering special times.
The truth is, Moms are the rock bottom foundation of life on this planet. Have any of you watched the current series on television Sunday night on NBC titled “The Americas” narrated by Tom Hanks? The in-depth documentary, exquisitely photographed, searching for Iife over the vast stretch of the Americas on the globe essentially boils down to the role of the female species from insect to the woolly mammoth, determining the life cycle for all existence.
Exposing the remarkable motherly roles of the female spotted bear, the four-eyed frog, and the seductive female hummingbird moving so fast as to be nearly invisible, offers evidence that Mother’s Day is every day. We celebrate May 11th at both clubs. Please do not compare your mom to the four-eyed frog, even if she has the ability to see all, know all, and be in charge of all, at all times!
On our May cover, a beautiful shot of members at Newport Beach Country Club celebrating an incredible season on the greens as spring fades into early summer. Check out the May golf tips and a review of the successful Hoag Classic. The circus came to Newport Beach Country Club delighting members, as did a special night of dueling pianos. Dining at the County Club, on Mother’s Day, or any day, is exceptional. Members take pride in the culinary excellence, and guests are impressed. Lunch or afternoon cocktails on the terrace facing the course is special.
The Balboa Bay Club and Balboa Bay Resort are also ready for Mom this month. Major dining experiences on May 11th in both the grand ballroom of Balboa Bay Resort and the Members Grill in the Clubhouse await your pleasure and celebration. In this issue, view all the BBC moms and daughters in a multiple page photo spread of the annual spring Princess Tea.
Be sure to read Lana Sills’ dining column on sparkling wine and Champagne and consider becoming a part of the BBC Wine Society. Melanie Hertrick outlines a busy schedule of late spring and early summer events not to be missed on the Club Previews page. Finally, moms and dads, read sportswriter Ryan Cook’s column on getting your kids ready for the Newport Beach Jr. Lifeguards program this summer.
It's all happening at NBCC, BBC and BBR this May. Yes, it’s all about Mom, and the rest of the family too!
Mother’s Day big hugs, and blessings.

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB
Robin Shelton
CCM, PGA Master Professional General Manager
Newport Beach Country Club
In the world of golf, where tradition often calls for a polished and composed demeanor, Miguel Ángel Jiménez stands out as unique. With his signature ponytail, thick mustache, and cool charm, the Spanish golfer has become a beloved and unforgettable character on and off the course. He’s not just known for his incredible talent but for his distinctive personality and unique approach to the game—making him arguably the most interesting man in golf.
In fact, in 2012, an article published by Bleacher Report “Top 7 most interesting men in golf” had Miguel Ángel Jiménez listed as the most interesting.
In 2014, Dos Equis Beer, known for its "Most Interesting Man in the World" ad campaign, featured Jiménez in a humorous commercial where he parodies the iconic Dos Equis character. In the ad, Jiménez is portrayed as "The Most Interesting Golfer in the World," riffing on the same theme that made the Dos Equis campaign so popular. The commercial showcased his unique charm, humor, and love for life, making him a perfect addition to the campaign.
Jiménez’s golf career is marked by consistent success, particularly in the European Tour, where he has amassed more than 20 victories, including two European Tour Order of Merit (the equivalent of PGA TOUR Money earnings title) titles. But what really sets him apart is the way he has blended his love for life with his passion for the sport. Jiménez brings a playful spirit to the game, evidenced by his famous “sword dance” with his putter, which he performs after sinking a great putt or a reason to celebrate. This spontaneous and quirky celebration perfectly reflects his lighthearted yet competitive nature.
Off the course, Jiménez is a man of many passions. He is an avid lover of fine cigars, often seen puffing away between rounds, and has a deep appreciation for good wine and gourmet food. He also indulges in a love for cars, particularly classic ones, and frequently shares his admiration for speed and craftsmanship.
Perhaps most fascinating about Jiménez is his philosophy toward aging and maintaining peak performance. While many golfers have slowed down as they get older, Jiménez has continued to thrive well beyond his 50s. His secret? A combination of a disciplined exercise routine, a flexible approach to the game, and an unwavering positive attitude. His commitment to staying in shape through yoga and stretching exercises has allowed him to stay competitive, proving that age is just a number for the “mechanic,” as he’s affectionately called.
In a sport that often favors the young, Jiménez stands as a testament to the fact that experience, character, and a willingness to embrace life’s pleasures can make a captivating figure in the game.
All the best,
Robin Shelton
For Kyle Naffziger, being the Head Personal Trainer & Athletic Specialist for Newport Beach Country Club is the perfect fit.
Kyle Naffziger was promoted to Head Personal Trainer & Athletic Specialist at Newport Beach Country Club earlier this year. Naffziger’s first job at the club was as a greenskeeper, which he began in July 2021. As an avid golfer, he knew from the first time he set foot on NBCC that this would be the right place for him to spend his days and build a career.
BW: Tell us more about your first job at NBCC Kyle Naffziger: My first position at NBCC was as a greenskeeper. It was perfect during the pandemic. I was outside on a beautiful golf course learning about agronomy. It was very hands on work from raking bunkers to cutting cups. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for what goes into maintaining a top-quality golf course.
BW: What led you to personal training?
KN: I went to Arizona State University on an academic scholarship and graduated with a BS in Exercise Science with a minor in Nutrition (emphasis on the Mediterranean Diet - semester abroad in Spain & Italy). I am a Certified Personal Trainer through American College of Sports Medicine and Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified. I am also working towards my second TPI certification (Junior 2) and my Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-EP) certification will be shortly thereafter. After my stint as a greenskeeper, I landed
a position as Personal Trainer/Group Exercises Instructor/Coach in our now Fitness department. Based on my background in Kinesiology and Biomechanics, I’m able to assist in building high-level training programs designed for our members here at NBCC.
BW: What is your current role like? What are some of your everyday tasks?
KN: I currently teach seven group classes a week: Golf Performance Training is five days a week at 7:00AM (Monday - Friday) and Strength Resistance Training is twice a week at 6:00AM (Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Additionally, I typically train around 18-24 one-on-one sessions per week. I have also been blessed with an awesome opportunity to design our new TPI backed Golf Performance Program focusing on swing mechanics, power, speed, mobility, and the mental approach to the game. This program will seamlessly transition the golf and fitness world together with the help of our world-class golf professionals here on property offering a unique experience for our members.
Can you tell us more details on the specific exercises you teach in the Golf Performance Training as well as the Strength Resistance Training? Also, how do these exercises specifically relate to golfers’ performance?
KN: In the Golf Performance Training program, we focus on implementing golf specific exercises that help golfers perform better while preventing injury. Our upper and lower body dissociation exercises help athletes understand how to separate their upper and lower bodies from one another, thus, creating more potential energy stored in the backswing. A variety of core exercises help in rotation, side bending, stability and mobility, which are crucial for performance. Power exercises are incorporated as speed, coordination and mobility movements have been grasped. Power cannot be obtained without that foundation. This class helps golfers understand how to generate energy from the ground up. Using proper biomechanics and technique to optimize their body which gives them better results on the course. Thus, increasing their enjoyment and love for the game.
Our Strength Resistance classes focus primarily on increasing total body strength through a variety of movements. These classes don’t emphasize a specific sport. However, they do involve movements that are found in the training programs of athletes in all facets of athletics. Athleticism is a result of understanding how to move the body efficiently and effectively. The better the athlete can do that, the more success they find in their sport.
Both Golf Performance and Strength Resistance classes have rotating exercises that are rewritten every two weeks. Every class is different from its predecessor which offers our members a unique class style with constantly changing exercises. This also adds excitement and has shown a more consistent commitment to their health.
BW: What do you enjoy most about your current job?
KN: I thoroughly enjoy helping our members achieve their goals. The best part of training is witnessing their progress and dedication pay off. Having the opportunity to educate members on the science behind their workouts, proper form, and nutrition, helps empower them to make informed decisions for their overall health.
BW: What is the best thing about working at NBCC?
KN: NBCC feels like home. It is rare to find a place of employment that has the staff’s best interest in mind. Management does a great job of making you feel heard. The club is consistently making improvements, staying up to date with technology, and has great communications with members and staff that make this place feel warm and inviting.
BW: What hobbies or interests do you have outside of work?
KN: Outside of work, I love anything active! I am an avid golfer and snowboarder who comes from a competitive sports, baseball, soccer and basketball background. I also enjoy creating music, going to concerts, and hanging out with friends and family. My parents and younger sister are my rock, without them I wouldn’t be here.

When it comes to finding success on the golf course, your swing can be crucial.
A proper swing directly affects accuracy, distance and consistency on the course while also helping to build up your confidence with every shot. Whether driving off the tee or approaching the green, a successful swing lays the foundation for lower scores and a more enjoyable round of golf.
“A successful swing is a coordinated sequence of movements that generates speed and accuracy, ultimately leading to a productive shot,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “This involves proper stance, grip and an understanding of body mechanics to ensure that each part of the swing works together. When executed correctly, the swing becomes an athletic motion that improves results and reduces the risk of injury.”
Read on to discover how to enhance your swing this spring.
BAY WINDOW: How can the average person understand the concept of developing a successful golf swing?
CARLO BORUNDA: Developing a successful golf swing is similar to building your ideal car. Your golf clubs and swing represent the vehicle you use to navigate the golf course. The backswing serves as the engine. The downswing is used for steering the ball toward its destination. Similarly to the golf swing, some vehicles prioritize producing maximum speed while others focus on getting you to your destination comfortably. Not all backswings can produce prodigious horsepower, but all downswings should keep you on course. A balanced finish position represents a polished and well-maintained vehicle. Your golf coach is your mechanic, and regular practice sessions
are how you keep a functioning vehicle.
BW: How do you maintain consistency in your swing?
CB: There are a few fundamentals in the golf swing that can help every golfer produce more consistency. The setup should provide a feeling of athleticism. The transition from backswing to downswing should feel rhythmic. Finishing your swing in balance is essential to producing consistent results. With practice, your ability to repeat these techniques will help you play a more successful round of golf.
BW: What are the most common mistakes you see amateur golfers make with their swing?
CB: Most amateur golfers focus too much of their effort on attaining more clubhead speed. While speed training should be included in every golfer’s practice program, an overemphasis on this skill often ruins tempo
Exercises like the farmers carry are essential for developing grip strength, which is a key for adding speed to your swing.
and negatively affects quality contact with the golf ball. Another mistake is believing that a shorter backswing is more repeatable. Adopting this strategy will not only ruin your tempo, it will likely rob you of potential distance.
BW: What do golfers need to do to complete their backswing?
CB: The backswing is how a golfer creates energy in the golf swing. The further the clubhead moves away from the golf ball, the greater the potential for delivering a powerful strike. Maintaining your posture and balance throughout the backswing is crucial for ensuring that you can leverage that stored energy effectively when you finally make contact with the ball. These are essential skills that will improve clubface contact with the golf ball and your overall ability to control where the golf ball goes.
BW: How does body rotation and weight transfer contribute to power and accuracy?
CB: A typical full swing begins with a slight shift of pressure to the trail foot as you rotate your pelvis. The weight should land on the inside of that foot, toward the heel, which will allow for up to 45 degrees of pelvic rotation. Depending on your flexibility, the upper body should rotate in a range of 80 to 110 degrees at the shoulders. This movement creates a dynamic coil in the torso and hips. From this position, you can initiate
your downswing by shifting your weight back to the lead foot and driving your hips to generate a powerful impact position.
BW: Are there specific exercises or stretches that help improve swing mechanics?
CB: A proper golf exercise program will improve your range of motion, add power to your swing and boost your overall performance on the course. Concentrate on stretching exercises that target flexibility in the torso, shoulders and hip flexors. Strengthening the glutes, legs and core will improve balance and promote a more efficient swing. One of my favorite exercises for targeting these areas of the body is the farmers carry, as it also increases hand strength, which is essential for controlling the golf club at higher speeds.
BW: How can good tempo help your full swing?
CB: An effective backswing is performed best when you swing the club smoothly away from the golf ball. The proper tempo of the backswing is three times slower than the downswing speed. This 3:1 ratio of backswing to downswing time establishes a rhythm that can improve consistency in your shots.
BW: What can you do to practice consistency in your full swing? Are there any drills to keep in mind?
CB: A consistent practice schedule is one of the most important assets for establishing confidence in your swing. Each session should touch on key elements that affect your game, like your fundamentals, tempo, swing speed, sequencing your swing, balance, and your pre-shot and post-shot routine. Set measurable goals, such as achieving a certain number of successful balanced swings in a row or improving your tempo. Rehearsing your swing with your eyes closed is a simple way to accomplish both of these skills.
BW: How can golfers stay focused and confident?
CB: The golfer’s mind is a fragile thing and can easily get clouded with the wrong thoughts. Write down a brief summary of your favorite swing thoughts. Review these notes on occasion and only make slight adjustments when necessary. Surrounding yourself with people who understand your goals and want to help you achieve them is crucial. This includes your golf coach and fitness trainer. Communicate to them any changes in your swing, playing strategy or physical movement that may be causing confusion or conflict. A focused mindset and healthy body can make all the difference in performance.
EXPLORE THE MANY REASONS WHY THESE TWO PASTIMES SHOULD NOT BE MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.
By Ashley Ryan
Historically, there has been a divide between golf and fitness. But why? Both rely on core strength, flexibility, balance and coordination. Mental focus is a major component of each as well. And both golf and fitness can play a role in building endurance, ensuring longevity and preventing injuries.
To understand why the two go hand-inhand, it’s important to first examine where the disconnect first started.
“The fitness industry itself didn’t begin until the ’70s and that only included ‘meathead’ Gold’s Gym workouts or aerobics with Jane Fonda—not something most golfers are looking for,” says Bianca Gillett, director of fitness at Newport Beach Country Club. “It wasn’t until the early 2000s that gyms became common and accessible and started gaining popularity. And since golf is not a contact sport like most others, it is easy to see why fitness and functional weight training weren’t needed.”
Read on to discover more about the importance of incorporating fitness exercises and a weight lifting routine into your schedule and the benefits you may see.
For Gillett, a former athlete, the idea of weight training to improve in a sport isn’t a foreign concept. But it took her longer to realize the importance of doing so for golf.
“Until I started playing myself, I didn’t see the need to weight train compared to when I played volleyball,” she explains. “But now I do, and a lot of PGA players see and feel the difference when they incorporate functional weight training in their routine.”
With more and more PGA TOUR members, including Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, turning to weight training to improve on the course, the disconnect has begun to shrink. Now, fitness and golf are widely considered to be the perfect pairing.
“Traditional golfers who have never weight
trained may feel intimidated to get into a weight room, but that’s where a personal trainer comes in,” Gillett says, noting that NBCC also offers personal training sessions with professionals. “It is best to find a trainer with a golf focus or a TPI fitness certification, but … if the trainer is developing a well-balanced program, a golfer will benefit from it.”
NBCC also offers classes like Golf Strength Performance, taught by head trainer Kyle Naffziger, to introduce golfers to the fitness side of things. “His class is always fully booked … [and] all of those members have seen improvement, whether it’s in performance, lack of injuries or faster recovery. It has been awesome to see.”
There are many ways that your body can
benefit from a consistent fitness routine.
“Physical fitness has a huge impact on golf performance, especially at the elite level. It’s not just hitting farther, although that is one of the big reasons,” Gillett notes.
Here are some of the reasons she says are most appealing for golfers looking to enhance their fitness:
Increased Distance: When you weight train, your muscles become stronger, especially in your core, legs and glutes— which many TPI specialists list as the top three muscles used in the game of golf. More power leads to faster swing speeds, which ensures longer drives.
Better Stability and Balance: A controlled swing comes from a strong, stable base, so core and leg strength are key.
Improved Mobility and Flexibility: A fluid, full-range swing requires mobility in
the hips, shoulders and thoracic spine. It also helps prevent early extension or swing compensations and reduces stress on joints.
Enhanced Mental Focus: Fitness programs can improve endurance and blood flow, aiding in a golfer’s ability to maintain concentration across four hours of play on the course. They may also make fewer mental mistakes, especially on the back nine or in high-pressure moments.
Faster Recovery: More fit players recover faster between rounds and during tournaments. Less fatigue leads to better performance during multi-day golf events or important tournaments.
Injury Prevention: Golf requires a lot of torque of the spine, knees and shoulders. Strength training and mobility work helps support joints and reduce the risk of overuse injuries.
Consistency Under Pressure: Fatigue can lead to breakdowns in swing mechanics. Strong, conditioned players are better able to maintain form and posture late in rounds, even in stressful conditions.
So make the time to incorporate fitness into your schedule and you’re sure to see improvements both on and off the golf course.

Make your food photography stand out with tips from Newport Beach Country Club’s junior sous chef, Frankie Guerrero.
By Ashley Ryan / Photography credit Frankie Guerrero
As a junior sous chef at Newport Beach Country Club, Frankie Guerrero is actively involved in creating delectable dishes. But one of his favorite hobbies outside of work also keeps him connected to the kitchen. Guerrero dabbles in food photography, taking stunning images of beautifully plated meals. But his initial passion for the pastime
didn’t start with food. Guerrero was inspired by former Major League Baseball player Randy Johnson’s photographs—specifically, how detailed they are and how they are expertly composed. This led him to start shooting everything from family, friends and animals to cities and landscapes.
“Slowly, I started taking pictures whenever I went out to a fine dining restaurant,” Guerrero says of how his hobby transitioned into something that aligned with his passion for cooking.
Read on to learn more about what Guerrero does as well as tips on how you can enhance your own food photos, whether you’re dining at home, at NBCC or beyond.
There’s no doubt that food photography has gained popularity in recent years. Whether that’s due to the all-encompassing nature of social media or the insurgence of influencers, people everywhere are snapping shots of their meals.
According to Guerrero, this is because gourmet food is so visual. “We eat with our eyes before we eat with our mouth,” he explains. “For the people who dine out, it lets them know what to expect rather than go in blindly. For the home cook, it could lead them to be more creative or inspired to cook or re-create the dish [in the photograph].”
From plating the dish in an artistic way to setting up the lighting for the shot, Guerrero says he enjoys everything about the process of pursuing the perfect photograph. He is most likely to capture images of the meals he eats while dining out, rather than when he cooks at home, but is often inspired by anything that is beautifully presented.
When photographing food and other subjects as well, Guerrero uses a Sony Alpha 7 IV full-frame mirrorless camera with a 2470mm f/2.8 lens. However, he says that you don’t need to purchase something quite that luxurious to get started. “For someone who is just getting started, I would recommend their personal phone or a Canon Rebel T6s with a 50mm lens,” he notes.
In addition to enhancing his photography skills, Guerrero says that taking photos of food has also elevated his talents in the kitchen by encouraging him to pay closer attention to the details, from water spots on the plates to how things are cooked or how vegetables are cut.
To get started yourself, he suggests going out and photographing your meals every chance you get—whether it’s a special occasion or not. You never know how your photographs will blossom as you learn. Plus, there’s something exciting about getting to taste everything you’re shooting as well.
To see more of Guerrero’s photography, visit his Instagram at @cheese12.
Discover ways that you can enhance your food photos, too.
1. Learn the Basics: The more you learn, the better your work will be—just like with any creative venture. Guerrero says that YouTube can be a crucial tool for discovering more about things like composition and color theory. Photography courses at local community colleges or specialized books at nearby libraries can also be important ways to enhance your knowledge and figure out how to improve your images.
2. Master Lighting: One of the most difficult things to grasp—but also one of the most important—is lighting. While natural lighting is always going to be the best route, many fine dining establishments don’t have a steady stream of sunshine coming in through the windows with which to work, especially at dinnertime. Learning to diffuse natural light or work with flashes or lighting setups can make all the difference in your compositions.
3. Style Before You Shoot: Presentation is everything when it comes to food photography. Just like many chefs plate a
meal with a certain aesthetic in mind, your food scenes should be thoughtfully designed to present the look and feel you want. While this may not always be possible in public restaurants, this is a great component to practice in your home kitchen.
4. Edit with Intention: Post-processing is another thing that all great photographers should try hard to master. As you never know what conditions you will face during a photoshoot, having the ability to properly edit your images is key. Make sure you don’t overdo it, but pay special attention to things like contrast and color balance during the editing process. You can also remove specks of dust, stray crumbs or other items that shouldn’t have been captured in the image.
5. Practice Makes Perfect: Guerrero stresses that practice is pivotal to becoming a great food photographer. The more you do it, the better you’ll get—and you’ll keep learning new things along the way. Stay consistent and wait for the results to reveal themselves.

If you have not had the pleasure of meeting him I encourage you to stop by the Membership office and say hello.
As always, we look forward to welcoming you at the club and wish all our Moms a wonderful and happy Mother’s Day.

I have a thriving Real Estate business which has taught me the value of loving where you live. I’m thrilled to begin this next chapter of my life now that my kids are grown and independent. I’m excited to return to Newport Beach, where I spent nearly 20 years of my life. With many friends at the BBC, it feels like the perfect place to call home during this transition. I’m looking forward to enjoying time with my kids Skye and Stirling, the ease of dining at my favorite restaurants, being close to friends, enjoying new experiences and events.
Don and Melissa Ayres Family

It takes passion, experience and the perfect location to craft an elegant sparkling wine. Champagne, and all bubbly, for that matter, brings balance and brightness to everything from Parmesan risotto to a gourmet grilled cheese.
May and June are the months at the BBC and Balboa Bay Resort for a special A+O Sparkling Wine Tasting Class on May 8th…A Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brunch on May 25th …and let’s plan ahead for the National Rosé Day Tasting at A+O on June 5th.
Journey through the world of four beautiful styles; the crisp, elegant Spanish Cava, the celebratory indulgence of French Champagne, a vibrant California sparkling and a Rosé Sparkler at the A+O Mother’s Day Winetasting Class on May 8th. Indulge in life’s best bubbles on the sublime patio and sip and savor these incredible pours.
Champagne is mainly made from a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes. Its reputation as a luxury beverage has been intact since the Romans established vineyards in Reims in the 5th century. Sparkling Champagne wasn’t discovered until the 16th century, by accident, by the Benedictine Monks and early vintages of sparkling Champagne tended to explode. Improvements to both bottle and cork developed over hundreds of years. The bubbles we love so much are a natural byproduct of fermentation, in the form of carbon dioxide. Fun fact… Champagne corks are under so much pressure that a flying cork can reach speeds of 50 miles per hour.
Veuve Clicquot is a prestigious champagne with a history of innovation, dedication to quality, use of the finest grapes, a mastery of aging and of course, it is the champagne of choice for the
Champagne Brunch in the Lighthouse Room at Balboa Bay Resort on May 25th from 10 am to 2 pm. Enjoy stunning bay views and a feast for every taste from a lavish buffet featuring a chilled seafood display, carving station, omelet station, along with more traditional favorites. As you gather together to celebrate the matriarchs of your family, toast with a chilled glass of Veuve and make memories of this warm and welcoming day. Two complimentary glasses of Veuve Cliquot are included per person.
A+O Restaurant’s National Rosé Day Tasting on the patio on June 5th is the perfect way to sip your way into summer. Celebrate fabulous friends and all things pink with this easy going wine to sip at any time of day. On this day, you’ll savor a Rosé flight, a vibrant selection of crisp, refreshing and delightfully bubbly pink pours. From bright and fruity to elegantly dry, this tasting is the perfect way to celebrate sunshine, warm breezes and good vibes. This is the perfect occasion to toast the simple pleasures of life and raise a glass of Rosé to the joys of life. Reserve your flight today.
To book the class, brunch or tasting, call 949.630.4120 or email reservations@ balboabayresort.com with your member number. Balboa Bay Club members receive special pricing.
Celebrate Sparkling Perfection. I raise my glass to YOU. Cheers!
By Lydia Richards, PR Manager for Brewer Clifton
Founded in 1996, Brewer-Clifton was born from Greg Brewer’s vision to shepherd wines into fruition that reflect the unique geographic, geologic, and climatic attributes of the Sta. Rita Hills. Throughout his career, Greg has focused on crafting Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from this eight-mile stretch of land.
Greg Brewer’s more than 30-year winemaking career has been marked by an unwavering dedication to the Sta. Rita Hills, a Santa Barbara County sub-appellation that he helped to map, define, and officially establish in 2001.
In 1996, while working at Melville Winery, Greg co-founded his eponymous label, BrewerClifton, with original partner Steve Clifton. Rather than simply producing wine, Greg found his passion in interpreting the distinctive voices of the vineyards within the Sta. Rita Hills.
Greg has since introduced Diatom, a starkly raised Chardonnay; Ex Post Facto, a refined cool-climate Syrah along with a new Pinot Noir on the horizon; and most recently, PERILUNE, an artistic collaboration that showcases a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay representing a dialectical shift from Brewer-Clifton.
Among the numerous accolades his wines have received, Greg was honored as Winemaker of the Year in 2020 by Wine Enthusiast
Magazine. Additionally, he was among a select group of winemakers invited to speak as a “Wine Star” at the 2024 Wine Spectator’s New York Wine Experience—the nation’s most esteemed consumer wine-tasting event.
For Greg and his small team, the essence of winemaking in the Sta. Rita Hills lies in honoring the land. “We don’t see ourselves as making anything,” he explains. “We’re deliberate in the location of our vineyards… but at the winery it’s about removal of self, maintaining a quiet voice. Everything is raised in neutrality. Our barrels are 15-20 years old. Everything is raised the same each year, so there is no prejudice from vineyard to vineyard, or block to block.”
A corollary of this disciplined approach is an acceptance of nature’s inherent imperfections, rooted in the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. “That is ultimately the intrigue in wines,” Greg explains, “The intrigue in nature is that level of something which is a little askew, a little off kilter, a little out of tune, deliberately so. And that’s actually the perfection. That’s the beauty.”
Home to the Sta. Rita Hills, Santa Barbara County is unlike any other wine region in the world. Owing to a tectonic shift millions
of years ago, its mountains run east to west instead of north to south. This phenomenon allows cold Pacific Ocean breezes to funnel directly into the vineyards, cooling the vines and extending the growing season. With 20,000 acres under vine spanning seven subappellations, Santa Barbara County showcases a range of soils, geographies, and microclimates.
Of these seven appellations, the Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest and closest to the Pacific Ocean, just 18 miles away. This coastal influence creates ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, promoting slow ripening, maximum flavor development, and vibrant acidity. Rare soil deposits, like diatomaceous earth, further distinguish this region, producing wines of remarkable character and complexity.
Balboa Bay Club Wine Society Members are warmly invited to enjoy complimentary tastings at the Brewer-Clifton tasting room in Lompoc. Plus, Balboa Bay Club Wine Society Members will enjoy Brewer Clifton’s 2021 vintage Perilune Chardonnay in the summer wine allocations sent to all wine society members in June.
Comprised of a vast array of elevation, aspect, and soil profile, Perilune is by far the most ambitiously complex of all our vineyards. From beach sand to botella clay, the rugged terrain and dramatic inclines offer myriad opportunities for dynamic fruit expression. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters and fermented in neutral barrels. Balanced, bright, and elegant, this wine goes perfectly with seared scallops, potato gratin, or a well-aged Comté cheese.
Not a member of the Balboa Bay Club Wine Society yet? Balboa Bay Club members can still experience the exclusive wines of Brewer Clifton at Balboa Bay Club’s annual Wines & Beer on the Bay Event coming up on June 27th from 5:30pm-7:30pm on Members Lawn. This wine and beer lovers’ event combines sensational libations and savory small bites with great music and a beautiful sunset for a spectacular summer evening you won’t want to miss. Reservations are required. Call 949.630.4120 to reserve your spot on the lawn!

Meet Phillip Di Rocco, a Newport Beach native, USC grad, Balboa Bay Club member, and founder of Wealth 365 Advisors. Beyond boardrooms and spreadsheets, Phillip is also an avid spearfisherman who’s dived in the most remote oceans of the world. We sat down with him to hear some wild underwater stories and talk about how growing up in Newport shaped his adventurous, strategic spirit. He also shares how the Bay Club has helped him stay connected to that lifestyle and community.
Q: You grew up in Newport Beach—how did that influence your love for the ocean?
A: I’ve always felt at home in the water. Growing
up in Newport, the beach was our playground. I played water polo, swam, fished—you name it. Eventually, I discovered spearfishing, and it felt like the perfect mix of sport, strategy, and survival.
Q: What was high school like at Corona Del Mar High School?
A: CDM High School was an amazing place to grow up. A lot of my closest friendships were formed there. It was competitive but fun. I was on the water polo team and loved the ocean— early mornings in the water for practice, then straight to class.
Q: What did your time at USC teach you that still influences your mindset today?
A: USC opened my eyes to the bigger picture— how to think long-term, build relationships, and see opportunities in challenges. I also learned how to grind, which helps when you’re underwater holding your breath for two minutes!
Q: What’s one of your most unforgettable spearfishing moments?
A: Hands down—Fiji. We were hunting tuna and suddenly were surrounded by seven whitetipped sharks. It got intense fast. My friend was about 50 feet below with two sharks heading toward him. I dove, got between them, and we
ended up fending off the sharks together. It was wild—but taught me a lot about staying calm under pressure.
Q: How does spearfishing shape the way you think about business?
A: It teaches patience, precision, and the importance of timing. You don’t rush a dive or a deal. You observe, you plan, and then you strike. It also teaches humility—you’re not always in control. The ocean, like the market, is unpredictable.
Q: Any parallels between prepping your dive gear and managing wealth?
A: Absolutely. In the water, your gear is your life support. In business and finance, your “gear” is your strategy, your advisors, your tools. If it’s not dialed in, you’re risking more than you think.
Q: You’ve been a member at the Balboa Bay Club since 2020—what role has that played in your connection to the Newport community?
A: The Bay Club has really deepened my local roots. It’s more than just a beautiful setting—it’s where friendships are built over early morning workouts, family club events, and weekends at the pool. Since joining in 2020, I’ve made new friendships and strengthened old ones—many of my high school and USC friends are also members, so there’s always someone familiar around. It’s a fun, easygoing environment that keeps me connected to the community I’ve always called home.
Q: What do you love most about what you do now?
A: Helping business owners feel confident in their financial journey. Most of my clients are entrepreneurs who’ve built something from scratch. I love helping them protect it and plan for what’s next—with the same focus and adaptability that spearfishing taught me.
Q: Any advice for someone wanting to dive into something new—whether business or spearfishing?
A: Start with curiosity. Study your environment. Surround yourself with people who’ve been there before. And when it’s time— don’t hesitate. Dive in.
Located in the chic, upscale Stag Lodge Resort in iconic Deer Valley, Utah, a magnificent mountain home was transformed by design sensation Barclay Butera! The goal for this project was to enhance the spectacular views and to bring the outdoors in with respect to the mountains and lush forests that surround it. The home came with incredible hickory floors that just needed sanding and polishing to refurbish them to their original luster and rich grain finish.
Once Butera had his foundation, he selected leather quartzite
materials in Sea Pearl for the kitchen countertops that accented the cool azure blue cabinets perfectly. Other marbles were integrated into doorways and the fireplace surround. Warm wood furnishings and rich textiles round out the design mix, and simple elegant styling enhances the serenity of the Deer Valley lifestyle. A first-time client, Barclay was thrilled to include a beloved piece of art from Mauriccio Malagutti to add a statement piece with a transitional twist to the living area. The overall organic aesthetic resulted in a modern-rustic getaway to be enjoyed for generations to come.

The Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program is a prestigious seven-week oceanbased initiative designed for youth aged 9 to 15. Running from June 17 to July 31 in 2025, this program is not just a summer activity—it’s a rite of passage for many local families and a steppingstone toward future lifeguarding roles in Newport Beach. With sessions held Monday through Thursday either in the morning (9:00 am to noon) or afternoon (1:00 pm to 4:00 pm) participants are grouped by age and swim test performance. Each Junior Guard develops essential ocean swimming skills, physical fitness, beach safety knowledge, and core lifeguarding fundamentals. The program culminates in hallmark events such as the Monster Mile, designed to celebrate physical progress, ocean readiness, and the spirit of teamwork that defines the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguards. To qualify, all participants must pass a timed 100-yard swim test with age-specific benchmarks:
• 9-year-olds: 100 yards in 1 minute 50 seconds
• 10 – 11-year-olds: 100 yards in 1 minute
45 seconds
• 12 – 13-year-olds: 100 yards in 1 minute
40 seconds
• 14 – 15-year-olds: 100 yards in 1 minute
35 seconds
For those looking to prepare effectively, the Balboa Bay Club offers one of the best environments to train for the Junior Lifeguard program. With its top-tier aquatic facilities, access to open water, and experienced coaches, the club provides young athletes with a safe and motivating space to build endurance, sharpen their swimming technique, and gain the confidence needed to pass the required swim tests. At the Balboa Bay Club, kids are encouraged to train three to four times per week, focusing on:
• Freestyle technique and breathing control
• Timed 100-yard swims
• Sprint sets and intervals for speed and cardiovascular endurance
• Treading water, flip turns, and underwater push-offs
Beyond the pool, the club has training resources with structured opportunities for strength and conditioning. The facilities not only give kids a physical edge in tryouts but also help them develop the mental toughness and discipline that the Junior Lifeguard program is known for cultivating. Balboa Bay Club kids enjoy several advantages when preparing for the Junior Lifeguard program:
• Priority access to swim lanes and conditioning equipment
• Personalized training support through the club’s recreational office
• Group clinics specifically tailored to Junior Guard prep
• Community atmosphere of like-minded families and mentors
• Beach to practice safe water entry, exit, and dolphining as well as push-ups and sit-ups
• Bay with Dock and Slide for building confidence swimming in ocean water
Many members of the Balboa Bay Club have a long-standing history with the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard Program. In fact, it's common to find parents who once trained on the same beaches and in the same pools where their children now prepare. Some have gone on to serve as fulltime Newport Beach Lifeguards themselves, creating a unique multi-generational tradition rooted in ocean safety, athletic discipline, and community pride. This legacy fosters a strong sense of connection and motivation. When kids see their parents leading by example—training, sharing stories, and even running drills alongside them—it builds more than just fitness; it builds character, confidence, and a deep respect for the ocean.
