June is the traditional wedding celebration month. Marriage memories have been created at Newport Beach Country Club and Balboa Bay Club for generations, so we appropriately grace our cover with a Club bride in a decidedly nautical backdrop. The ideal blend of beach life, romance, and the launch of the summer dream wedding in Newport.
Our Bay Window Style Editor Carole Pickup shares a photo essay featuring classic BBC and NBCC brides over many decades of Club Life. Visit pages 36-37 in this June issue. It’s all about the dress!
June is also celebrated as grad season. So many members proudly witness the rite of passage as their children progress up the educational ladder. From kindergarten matriculators to high school diplomas, families at NBCC and BBC will gather to raise a glass blessing the potential for their kids in America. Coming up in our July issue, an impressive display of such promise as the annual “1221 Club” Scholarship awardees from local Newport Mesa public high schools addressing their parents and Club members attending the annual awards dinner in the BBR Grand Ballroom. Newport Beach Mayor Joe Stapleton joined John Wortmann, BBC Club Chairman of the Board of Governors, and some 300 guests applauding 24 local Newport Mesa students accepting some $200,000 in scholarship grants.
In this June issue, enjoy photo essays on Club members supporting the charity outreach of the Newport Beach Decorative Arts Society (DARTS) benefitting multiple organizations helping women, children and families in the OC. Laura’s House held its annual gala at Balboa Bay Resort, welcoming a huge turnout making a serious impact on community needs. NBCC welcomed the 30th annual Rich Saul Golf Classic and dinner celebration benefitting Childhelp. NFL great Vince Ferragamo joined Rich Saul’s widow Eileen Saul rallying the community and raising significant funding for Childhelp’s enormously important life-saving programs for our most vulnerable kids.
Our talented dining columnist Lana Sills writes about two new additions to the culinary experience for members. Read about Paix Sur Terre Wines on pages 60-61 and the BBQ & Bourbon for Dad event on pages 62-63 in this issue. Enjoy the family Easter photos from NBCC and BBC, and members gathering for the local running of the Kentucky Derby in our own BBC backyard video racetrack. At NBCC, the Champion’s Dinner was a perfect par 4 event.
And finally, sports columnist Ryan Cook takes a tour of Jim Glidewell’s Yacht Shogun led by his Captain Trevor.
Summer is at our barefoot doorstep. Dive in, the water is fine. The best season of the year beckons.

It is with great excitement and sincere appreciation that I introduce myself as the new Director of Membership Sales & Events at the Balboa Bay Club. It is truly an honor to join such a distinguished and vibrant community, and I look forward to meeting each of you and becoming part of what makes this Club so special.
As a native Californian and lifelong enthusiast of everything our beautiful coast has to offer, I am thrilled to return to a setting that feels like home. I bring with me extensive experience in membership sales and marketing, property management, business development, and relationship building. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of serving in leadership roles with respected organizations such as Invited Clubs, ClubCorp, American Golf, Heritage Golf, and several other prestigious private membership communities. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside growth-driven teams, helping to enhance member engagement and elevate club experiences.
I attended the University of California at Santa Barbara, where I earned a degree in Communications and was a proud member of the Men’s Soccer Team. Today, I remain active in sports and recreation as a member of the Southern California Golf Association, and I enjoy skiing, tennis, and spending time with my family. I also have a passion for real estate and enjoy the creative challenge of renovating residential properties.
What drew me to the Balboa Bay Club—beyond its legacy of excellence and stunning location—was the genuine sense of community and the Club’s deep commitment to offering exceptional experiences for its members. I am excited to bring new ideas, energy, and a strong focus on member connection and satisfaction. Whether it's through engaging events, personalized service, or strategic growth initiatives, my goal is to ensure that your experience here continues to exceed expectations.
I look forward to getting to know each of you in the coming weeks and invite you to stop by my office or say hello when you see me around the Club. Together, we will continue to make the Balboa Bay Club a place we are all proud to call our home away from home.
Warm regards,

The wedding dress is most important to the bride. Her style is what she feels most comfortable in and plays a key role in merging traditional and modern wedding styles. So, it seems only appropriate to ask as the years go by, has the wedding dress changed much? It is a timeless tradition to take a look at: the blending of traditional and modern styles that adapt to the essence of Love. The year is important to note, so let’s see what you think. Do you think there has been much of a change?

It certainly is not what it was when I was young. I was eleven when my brother asked me to be stationed by the guest book at his wedding. He was married right after World War II. Then guess what, I was in more than 14 weddings by the time I got married in 1962!
In those days, we had no big dinners or dancing with a band. We had a wedding cake and punch.

The world of sport has some of the most iconic and memorable locations that add to the special allure that creates tradition and special celebration. These venues host the highest level of competition and produce tragedy and triumph that appeal to our most emotional and compelling feelings.
Some of these venues that stand out and are recognizable throughout the world include Fenway Park (home of the Boston Red Sox), The All England Club (home of Wimbledon), Wrigley Field (home of the Chicago Cubs), Champs Elisz (home to the final stage of the Tour de France), Lambeau Field (home of the Green Bay Packers), Roland Garos (home of the French Open), and The Coliseum in Rome.
All of these venues are incredible, but I think there is one sporting venue that stands above them all, including those listed – the second nine at Augusta National Golf Club.
Every year, without fail, the second nine at August National Golf Club creates the ultimate in tragedy and triumph, highs and heartbreak, and memories and miracles. Each year, you know something unique is going to happen that is not predictable.
The 89th Masters Tournament recently completed with Rory McIlroy winning the tournament and completing the career grand slam. On the second nine on Sunday, we saw all of the following - a five stroke lead, tie for the lead, an almost guarantee of victory, an almost assurance of defeat, a ball almost in the water, another ball hit in the water with a sand wedge, a miracle shot from behind the trees, shots executed to perfection – which all led to feelings of confidence, hope, heartbreak, assurance of victory, sadness of defeat, resilience, and accomplishment.
These feelings all happened while we cheered for Rory McIlroy, or for another player. These feelings, though, happen every year, in each tournament. A reflection of tournaments include victories from Jack Nicklaus, victory from Fred Couples, victories from Tiger Woods, and in defeat of Greg Norman or Robert DiVicenzo. All having their highs and lows.
The Masters Tournament delivered these feelings, the tragedy and triumph, the hope and heartbreak, and everything in between, all because of the second nine at Augusta National. It is something that no other golf course, no other stadium, and no other sporting venue can produce.
The second nine at Augusta National, shows another example of one of my deeply held beliefs, golf is the greatest force for global good, through all of the connections and conversations between friends and family that doesn’t happen at other sport locations.
I’ll shout it from the mountaintops – the second nine at Augusta National Golf Club is the greatest sporting venue in the world.
All the best, Robin Shelton

They look forward to meeting the members and enjoying the many family activities together.
DISCOVER THE TRUTH ABOUT TRAJECTORIES AND HOW CHOOSING THE PERFECT LANDING SPOT CAN ENHANCE YOUR GOLF GAME.
By Ashley Ryan
There are many places a ball can land on the golf course: the rough, the fairway, the green, even the hole. But you may also find it making its way into bunkers, water hazards, forested areas or even out of bounds. Garnering control over your shot—and, more specifically, your landing spot—can make all the difference as you navigate your round.
“The golf ball’s ultimate destination is determined by the golfer’s ability to plan and execute the necessary technique for that shot,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “The trajectory and landing spot are key elements to consider in the planning process.”
Here, learn how you can map out your shot to achieve your desired landing spot and score.
BAY WINDOW: Why is it important to think about a golf ball’s trajectory and landing spot?
CARLO BORUNDA: When planned correctly, the golf ball’s proximity to the hole can improve. The closer you are to the hole, the more likely you are to achieve a lower score, which is the goal of every golfer.
BW: How can considering these things impact your golf game?
CB: During a round of golf, you’ll notice that each hole on the golf course has a different position. Some positions allow you to aim directly at the hole without much difficulty. However, at times, it is wiser to select a landing spot that is farther from the hole. This helps you avoid hazards like bunkers or water, which could add strokes to your score if you land in them. When the hole is located near the back of the green, a lower ball flight and a landing spot toward the middle are ideal. This strategy ensures that even a slightly mis-hit approach shot will still land safely on the green.
BW: What are the main factors that influence the trajectory of a golf ball?
CB: Although many factors influence a golf ball’s trajectory, the core elements to consider are club head speed, launch angle and club face angle at impact. These three components work together to determine how far and how accurately the ball will travel. More club head speed results in higher ball speed, leading to greater distance and an increased launch angle. Higher spin rates generate more lift, allowing for a steeper flight and softer landing, while lower spin can enhance roll. The ideal trajectory balances launch angle, ball speed and spin to achieve the desired shot. Backspin, produced by the club’s loft and clubface contact,
impacts lift and distance control. By optimizing each factor, golfers can significantly enhance their performance on the course.
BW: How does club type affect ball flight and landing?
CB: Club type influences a golf ball’s flight and landing due to variations in loft, club length and clubhead design. Choosing the right golf club and swing technique to manipulate ball flight can significantly enhance a golfer’s ability to meet the challenges presented by the golf course. By understanding how each club affects the trajectory and spin of the ball, golfers can better strategize their shots and improve their overall performance on the course.
BW: What role do launch angle, ball speed and spin play in trajectory?
CB: Launch angle, ball speed and spin are essential factors that influence a golf ball’s trajectory, determining its height, distance and behavior during flight and upon landing. The launch angle establishes the initial height of the trajectory, ball speed affects the distance traveled and spin influences lift, curve and landing behavior. The interaction of these elements defines the ball’s flight path. To achieve the desired outcome, golfers must optimize these factors by selecting the appropriate club and refining their swing mechanics.
BW: How do environmental factors like wind and temperature affect trajectory?
CB: Wind and humidity are two of the most significant environmental factors that influence the trajectory and accuracy of a golf shot. A strong headwind can change the ball’s flight, causing it to rise higher and fall short of its intended target. Damp or humid conditions can affect the golf ball’s ability to remain airborne, leading to a reduced overall carry distance. Conversely, a golf ball will travel farther in warmer conditions where the air is less dense. A golfer can enhance their performance on the course by effectively adjusting their swing and playing strategy based on the wind and temperature. This is why professional golfers often pay close attention to current weather conditions before making their swing.
BW: How do professional golfers plan their shots based on landing areas?
CB: A professional golfer often discusses their strategy with their caddie before making a swing. Depending on the difficulty of the shot and the context of the tournament, this
pair considers various factors, including temperature, elevation, potential hazards and the required carry distance before selecting a golf club. They also take into account their physical condition, including possible spikes in adrenaline based on their level of excitement.
BW: What common mistakes do amateur golfers make when it comes to understanding trajectory and selecting an appropriate landing spot?
CB: Amateur golfers often struggle with accurately predicting the amount of roll the golf ball will have after landing. This miscalculation can result in shots that fall short or overshoot the intended target. To improve their accuracy in anticipating the ball’s behavior after landing, golfers should consider factors such as green speed, slope and weather conditions. Another common mistake occurs when a golfer chooses a landing spot that is too close to a hazard. This decision can create additional pressure and anxiety during the shot, causing the golfer to lose focus. Instead, selecting a safer target allows for more room for error and can boost confidence when making the swing.
BW: How much variance is normal in between intended and actual landing spots?
CB: The skill level of the golfer plays a major role in how likely they will be to execute an acceptable shot. A scratch (0 handicap) golfer can take more risks because they can hit more precisely. A less-skilled golfer should prioritize safer targets to account for larger dispersion. According to data collected by the PGA TOUR, TrackMan and Arccos, the average total dispersion circle for golfers with a 7-iron is 10 yards (scratch), 15 yards (15+ handicap) and 25 yards (20+ handicap). By understanding their own capabilities and adjusting their strategies accordingly, golfers of all skill levels can improve their overall performance on the course.
BW: How do launch monitors help measure and analyze trajectories?
CB: Launch monitors are a valuable tool for determining how your golf swing and club interact with the golf ball. They allow you to measure the club’s attack angle, orientation at impact, and the golf ball’s launch angle and spin rate. Including this technology in your practice sessions and lessons can significantly help you improve your golf game. Understanding these data points increases confidence while also resulting in more consistent rounds of golf.
MOTHERS WERE IN THE SPOTLIGHT DURING NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB’S ANNUAL MOTHER’S DAY EVENT.
Enjoy libations filled with fresh fruit and accented with botanicals this season at Seahorse Grille.
By Ashley Ryan
Summer is about to blossom, and Newport Beach Country Club is the ideal place to enjoy fresh cocktails this season. From sweet, seasonal flavors to stunning botanical touches that elevate each libation, you’re sure to leave feeling light and refreshed.
“The perfect balance of sweet and acidic makes strawberries … [enhance] any spirit … [while] floral introductions help lift a drink from heavy on the base spirit to a light and delightful cocktail,” says Andrew Cichon, Newport Beach Country Club’s sommelier and beverage manager.
Stop by the Seahorse Grille to try these summer drinks, created by bartender Adam Zehner.
“The original-style daiquiri was all about complexity, freshness and balance, not sweetness or a blender,” Cichon says. “… This [modern] … berry twist makes you fall in love with rum again. El Dorado, a Demerara sugar-based rum from Guyana, creates a balance in the cocktail.”
2 strawberries, one for garnish
1 basil leaf
1 ounce simple syrup
2 ounces El Dorado 3-Year Rum
1 ounce lime juice
Muddle one strawberry and the basil leaf with simple syrup. Pour all ingredients into a shaker full of ice, shake for 15 seconds, then double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a strawberry wheel.
“Bourbon with a fresh addition changes the way to think about an Old-Fashioned,” Cichon says. “… Lemon and muddled strawberries with a mint sprig make this a truly enjoyable libation no matter the time, day or night.”
1 strawberry
1/2 ounce simply syrup
2 ounces Jefferson’s Bourbon
3/4 ounce lemon juice
2 dashes orange bitters
1 lemon wedge, for garnish
1 mint sprig, for garnish
Muddle the strawberry with simple syrup. Place all ingredients in a shaker full of ice, shake hard for 10 seconds and double strain into a Collins glass. Garnish with a lemon wedge and mint sprig.
“Inspiration by the strelitzia, the Bird of Paradise flower, made this cocktail blossom into a beautiful botanical mixture,” Cichon says. “Stemming from the 47 natural flavors from the German-made Monkey 47 gin, the hint of elderflower liqueur lifts it to a whole new level.”
2 ounces Monkey 47 gin
3/4 ounce St-Germain
1/2 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce grapefruit juice
1/4 ounce simple syrup
2 dashes orange bitter
1 hibiscus flower, for garnish
Place all ingredients in a shaker full of ice, shake hard for 10 seconds and strain into a coupe or martini glass. Garnish with the hibiscus flower.
UNCOVER HOW WEIGHT TRAINING CAN PLAY A CRUCIAL ROLE IN YOUR GOLF PERFORMANCE.
By Ashley Ryan
Many are unaware of how important fitness can be to one’s golf game. The slow pace on the course and gentle movements offer a false sense of security, but golfers can still get injured along the way. Weight training and mobility sessions are the perfect way to combat that, offering the necessary tools to strengthen your body, making it better able to withstand what it goes through while partaking in any sport. With the popularity of gyms growing exponentially since the early 2000s and professional PGA TOUR members incorporating more fitness into their
routines, there has also been a rise in training among amateur golfers.
Benefits of these sessions include increased power for more distance on swings, better balance and stability, enhanced mental focus, injury prevention, better mobility, faster recovery and more, proving just how effective these workouts can be for your score.
When you start a new training regimen, Bianca Gillett, director of fitness at Newport Beach Country Club, says to focus your
attention on legs and core strength, hip and core stability, rotational power, balance and mobility. “All these elements are crucial for a powerful and consistent golf swing,” she explains.
Start with a dynamic warm up and don’t worry about lifting heavy weights. “Heavier weight load is not the focus; improving on power, flexibility and stability is the goal compared to hypertrophy,” Gillett adds. “Prioritize mobility work for hips, thoracic spine and shoulders. Lastly—and just as important—is recovery. Avoid overtraining before rounds or tournaments and utilize recovery modalities like air compression
therapy, sauna, cold plunge and foam rolling.”
In addition to weight training and recovery, place an emphasis on mobility and flexibility to see improvements in your game. Whether it’s the upper back, shoulders, hips or ankles, the movement of your joints, or lack thereof, can affect performance.
Stretching two to four times a week is suggested, with Gillett recommending exercises like cat-cow, T-spine rotations, 90/90 hip switches, ankle rockers and the world’s greatest stretch.
“Through consistent training, golfers will see improvement in swing mechanics, which
means there is less or no compensation from the spine, shoulders or wrists. Good mobility training ensures force is distributed evenly, not overloaded in one area,” she says. “This reduces wear on joints, which helps prevent wear-and-tear type injuries. And lastly, mobility training enhances recovery because mobile joints and tissues can better handle repetitive movement and strain, reducing risk of inflammation.”
If you’re feeling unsure where to start, connect with a trainer or enroll in weight training classes so that you can learn the proper form and technique—and avoid injury. “Most country clubs, like us, have
personal training and group classes tailored for our golfers,” Gillett notes. “Then, if or when you feel comfortable, you can do it on your own. It is the best chance for success as most newbies don’t stay adhered to a program and that is usually due to a lack of knowledge and direction.”
Strength and mobility training isn’t only for the pros: Even amateur golfers can benefit from these exercises. And the sooner you start, the better.
“We are finding out there’s a massive benefit for young golfers,” Gillett says. “In fact, starting at a younger age can set the foundation of a long, injury-free and highperforming golf career.”
Beginners can look at these sessions as habit-building, integrating weight training and mobility into their lifestyle as opposed to just their golf training. “We know that golf is a sport and requires overall physical fitness—strength, mobility, endurance and stability,” she says. “But strength training builds a stronger physical base, and young golfers have the potential to develop a wellrounded, injury-resistant body that supports all aspects of their game.”
Part of these improvements include neuromuscular adaptations, with young golfers’ nervous systems learning to enhance muscles, which can lead to improved coordination, swing mechanics and even timing. But they can also help protect the longevity of your golfing career. “Tiger Woods and other elite pros often speak about how fitness helped them avoid injury during their careers,” she adds. “The earlier you start, the longer the body can handle the physical load of competitive golf.”
Strive for balance to avoid overtraining. Gillett recommends that young golfers schedule strength training sessions two to three times a week, leaving at least one or two days of recovery in between. “Performing mobility training on those off days would be ideal, as it will still allow your muscles to recover from weight training and help improve mobility and flexibility for the golf game,” Gillett says.
Most importantly, she adds, listen to what your body is telling you and scale back on intensity if you need a break. Working hard doesn’t require overtraining.

Wine has never been more dynamic and exciting, with new regions coming into focus, overlooked varieties to explore and top talents showing off their genius by way of grapes. The juice is flowing and savvy wine drinkers are finding the best of the best.
Paix Sur Terre Wines, French for “Peace on Earth” established in 2010 in Paso Robles by Winemaker Ryan Pease, crafts singlevineyard Mouvèdre, Rhône blends and
Mediterranean-style white wines. The very first allocation of wines for the exclusive BBC Wine Society was the Paix Sur Terre Vermentino given to Wine Society club members this past April, a limited third release 2024 of 100% Vermentino, a grape that has incredible potential to achieve high quality from the vineyard’s Mediterranean climate and limestone soils. Their wines age in old French oak barrels that respect the quality of the fruit. Grapes are sourced from nine stunning vineyards on the west side of Paso
Robles where the fruit is picked to express a balance of mouthwatering, savory and mineral qualities. Paix Sur Terre wines are elegant, well-balanced, complex and true to their Paso Robles terroir.
Mark your calendar for Wines & Beer on the Bay, happening Friday, June 27th on the Members Lawn from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM.
Featured wineries include Paix Sur Terre, Far Niente, Rombauer, Daou Winery, Grgich Hills, Austin Hope, Adobe Road, JCB and many more. Tasting great wines with a beautiful
sunset and music on the Bay is what summer dreams are made of. Just be sure to reserve your spot by calling the Club Desk at 949-630-4120. Wine gets the Hollywood treatment in these wine-related movies…I especially like Sideways, Somm, Uncorked and the Amazon Prime series, It Starts with Wine. There is a cinematic romance to wine, and it’s no surprise that Hollywood has bottled that allure in films. My wine-bucket reading list includes a fiction book that makes the
ultimate drinking companion; Peter StaffordBow’s Corkscrew and his follow-up tales offer an escape into the world of wine—a perfect pairing for your next glass.
Wine has the power to transport you and can get you ready for a trip. Tasting the wines of a particular destination allows you to have meaningful connections with winemakers. Each bottle can be your virtual passport. Some of my favorite bottles are like a warm hug— mellow, full of dark fruit, leather and earth.
Comfort in a glass.
Of course, there are rules for pairing wine with food, but they are simply guidelines and ultimately, I believe you should drink whatever you like. The basic rule for pairing wine with food is to match the intensity of the food with that of the wine…and then break the rules according to your taste!
After all, as someone once said: “Wine is like potato chips around me…if it’s open, it’s gone”!

Summer is approaching, and with every new season comes the perfect opportunity to reset, recharge, and recommit to your well-being. At Balboa Bay Club, we believe that self-care isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a lifestyle. That’s why we’re excited to invite you to experience our newest wellness offerings: the invigorating cold plunge and a transformative Sound Bath Meditation event.
We’re thrilled to announce the opening of our state-of-the-art cold plunge at Balboa Bay Club. Curious about why the cold plunge is making waves in the wellness world? Let’s explore the science and benefits behind this revitalizing practice.
A cold plunge involves immersing the body in cold water—typically between 50–59°F (10–15°C)—for a short period, usually 2 to 10 minutes. This method has roots in ancient wellness traditions and has been embraced by athletes, celebrities, and health experts alike.
Recent studies published in the Journal of Physiology and Medicine highlight that regular cold plunge sessions can lead to:
Reduced Muscle Soreness: Participants reported up to 40% less muscle soreness after workouts with post-exercise cold immersion.
Faster Recovery: Cold plunges
accelerate muscle repair and reduce downtime between training sessions. Improved Circulation: The cold stimulates blood flow, enhancing oxygen delivery to muscles and organs. Boosted Mood and Immunity: Cold exposure increases endorphin levels and may improve immune function by up to 20%.
At Balboa Bay Club, our new cold plunge is designed for comfort and safety. Whether you’re winding down after a personal training session, recovering from a group fitness class, or simply seeking a mindful reset, our cold plunge is open to all members looking to elevate their recovery time.
RELAXATION: SOUND BATH MEDITATION EVENT ON JUNE 18TH
WHAT IS SOUND BATH MEDITATION?
If you’re looking for a different kind of recovery—one that soothes the mind as well as the body—our upcoming Sound Bath Meditation event is for you. Sound baths use a combination of instruments like crystal singing bowls, gongs, and chimes to create immersive soundscapes that promote deep relaxation and healing. Participants simply lie back and allow the sounds to “wash over” them, helping to quiet the mind, lower stress, and restore balance.
Stress Reduction: A 2016 study in the Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine found that sound bath participants experienced a significant decrease in tension, anger, and anxiety—by as much as 54%.
Improved Sleep: Sound meditation can enhance sleep quality by supporting relaxation and reducing racing thoughts.
Enhanced Focus and Creativity: The meditative state induced by sound can sharpen concentration and spark creative insights.
For this event, the Member’s lawn will transform into a tranquil sanctuary. Members will enjoy a full hour of immersive sound healing, guided by an experienced practitioner. No prior experience is required—we provide the yoga mat or towel, and you wear comfortable clothing, and prepare to let go of stress.

At the prestigious Balboa Bay Club, luxury and character converge in the form of Shogun, a striking 128-foot motor yacht with a storied past and a magnetic presence. Originally built in 2002 by Northcoast Yachts and extensively refit in 2022, Shogun
is more than just a vessel, she's a floating work of art and a symbol of enduring craftsmanship.
The name Shogun, a shortened version of the Japanese title Sei-i Taishōgun, meaning “Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Force Against the
Barbarians,” is fitting. This yacht exudes both authority and grace. Once known as Lady Kath, Shogun has been meticulously maintained and recently transformed with an opulent interior redesign by Nardine Habib. Her lavish spaces are adorned with deep reds, vibrant golds,
and intricate Eastern-inspired details that make each room feel like a royal chamber. Accommodating up to 12 guests in five stately staterooms, Shogun offers everything from a full-beam master suite with Jacuzzi to sweeping outdoor decks complete with alfresco dining and a sundeck hot tub with 360-degree views.
Yet what truly sets Shogun apart isn’t just her luxury, it’s her crew. At the helm is Captain Trevor, a seasoned seafarer known for his calm leadership and welcoming presence. By his side, quite literally at his heels, is his loyal first mate: London, a teacup Yorkshire terrier with the heart of a lion.
Every morning and afternoon, London
patrols the Balboa Bay Club docks with military precision. She greets every staff member and resident along her route, tail wagging, eyes alert, exuding the watchful pride of a true guardian. Despite her petite size, London considers it her personal mission to protect Shogun, and her daily rounds have become a beloved routine at the club.
Shogun’s legacy is further enriched by her owner, Jim Glidewell, founder and CEO of Glidewell Laboratories. Known for pioneering advancements in dental technology, Glidewell brought the same innovation and care to yachting. From Shogun to his additional vessels including,
the fishing-friendly Serengeti also docked at the Bay Club and 191-ft Unbridled, his fleet has always blended luxury with familyfocused adventure. With children often aboard, Glidewell’s passion for exploration and marine life turned his yachts into floating sanctuaries for unforgettable experiences.
Today, docked at the Balboa Bay Club, Shogun continues to turn heads not just for her bold design and elegant interiors, but because she’s watched over by a tenacious Yorkie who knows every creak of the dock and every face on the pier.
Because sometimes, even a general needs a good dog.
