Spartan Training owners shape bodies, minds BY KEN ABRAMCZYK
Losing weight is always the most popular New Year’s resolution for Americans. Robert Leasure knows that and talks with the inevitable bump in new clients at this time of year to educate them about his company, Spartan Training, a personal training company he co-owns with his wife, Vicki. He doesn’t mince words with them. “Losing body fat is going to be one of the hardest things you will do in your life,” Leasure said. Approximately 75 percent of people gain it back in three years or less, he said. “I hate to be doom and gloom, but those are the facts,” Leasure said. Leasure said he named Spartan Training, after the warriors in the movie “300,” who were vastly outnumbered in the Battle of Thermopylae, yet fought the Persians in a last stand. “I liked the movie, they had a strong name and had integrity,” Leasure said. Robert and Vicki focus on fitness, nutrition and wellness that extends beyond the physical workouts of weights in a traditional gym and the common cardio training on ellipticals or treadmills. They also work with clients’ mindsets, through affirmations and positive approaches, to help attain goals and integrate sound health and fitness into their personal lifestyles. Knocking off the pounds Weight gain often stems from metabolic syndrome, Leasure said. Men with waistlines over 40 inches and women over 35 inches, and a body fat over 30 percent tend to experience metabolic issues, and the Leasures help clients
reverse these issues. Insulin resistance, a condition prevalent with those with metabolic syndrome, potentially leads to type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high cholesterol, heart disease, stroke and other medical issues, Leasure said. (More detailed information is located on the Spartan Training website at www. spartan-training.com.) The bottom line is extra calories are stored as fat, and exercise, better nutrition and overseeing caloric intake can reverse metabolic syndrome. Nutrition programs focus on getting clients’ bodies “back in balance,” the fitness regime stretches and shapes muscles and features high reps with low weights. Leasure’s facility features Body Solid exercise equipment, free weights, dumbbells and benches, sleds and VertiMax equipment for ballistic movements and vertical jumps for resistance and strength training. While some younger football and basketball players receive training there to upgrade their vertical jumping skills, most older clients focus on the weight loss and fitness training. “Most of it is oriented around the metabolic training,” Leasure said. “We teach people how to use their muscles and how to be effective in training,” Leasure said. “We teach them how to use muscles so they can go into a gym and use it safely and effectively. A positive mindset Leasure said people can lose weight and get in shape, but change is difficult because negative thoughts are present. “The

subconscious doesn’t like change, it wants you to stay the way you are. There is fear, doubt and anxiety about losing weight.” Positive thoughts and vision on how to attain specific goals are presented and remembered throughout training. “What sets us apart is we teach how to reprogram the subconscious mind,” Leasure said. “We use affirmation techniques.” That includes keeping a picture nearby of someone whose physique the client wants to resemble. “It is somebody who inspires them, or has a physique they like. They can use the picture as visualization and inspiration.” The clients verbally repeat the affirmations. Leasure states what an affirmation may sound like: “Today I took 10 points off body fat, three inches off waistline and 15 to 20 pounds off of body fat.” A six-week duration of training can
be purchased for 12 sessions, with two a week. During the six weeks, Leasure dispels much of the misinformation, confusion and skepticism that the clients develop from previous attempts at losing weight and the accompanying strategies that frustrated them. Once the initial six-week period ends, the client is reassessed by Leasure. Clients also can sign up for 50 sessions or 100 sessions. Leasure said what sets Spartan Training apart from the other facilities is the positive mindset the Leasures promote and reiterate throughout training. “We’ve taken the unknown and replaced it with a known,” Leasure said, that is results and a positive outcome. “So you have new goals and you create new affirmations.” Spartan Training is located at 985 W. Chandler Heights Rd., Suite 12, Chandler. For more information, call (480) 802-2222 or www.spartan-training.com.
