She gave motorcycle drag racing a try and learned she was pretty good at it. She then assembled a land-speed team, went to Bonneville, Utah, and joined the elite 200 mph club.

Now, she’s officially broke 300 mph, making her the fastest woman on a motorcycle. You’ll want to get acquainted with her, starting on page 40.

Optima Kierland condo tower under way Optima Kierland, a high-rise luxury condominium and boutique rental community that opened in April, is now going vertical with construction of the project’s first 12-story condominium tower with about 220 residences.

More than 80 Optima Kierland residences have been sold, with prices ranging from the low $300,000s to $4.5 million.

In the tower, one- to five-bedroom homes are sized from approximately 720 square feet to 6,500 square feet start in the low $300,000s. There are more than 30 floor plans.

Optima Kierland is on 9.5 acres at Scottsdale Road and Kierland Boulevard.

The project, developed by Optima, will see its first condo residents in December 2017, with completion of the tower planned for August 2018.

Construction also is under way on a

150-residence boutique leasing tower, which will begin pre-leasing and occupancy in early 2017. The two towers are part of the development’s first phase.

There will be four residential towers when complete.

Optima Kierland will be distinctive for its geometric design, lush vertical gardens and floor-to-ceiling glass, allowing unencumbered desert and mountain views.

Longtime Valley restaurant operator Loco Patrõn has leased the former Salty Senorita building, 14950 N. Northsight Blvd. in the Airpark, for a new Loco Patrõn Mexican Breweryto open in Janaury.

“We have been looking for the right location for the past three years to deliver our newest concept,” said Ryan Vertuca, who owns Loco Patrõn along with Josh Levine and Jeremy Jazwinski. “First on the list is to almost double the size of the current patio. The new patio will have a ‘backyard feel’ to it.”

Kierland Village Center sold for $34.5 million Kierland Village Center, a grocery and drug anchored neighborhood shopping center at the southeastern corner of 64th Street and Greenway Road in Scottsdale, sold for $34.5 million to Chicago-based LaSalle Investment Management, Cushman & Wakefield announced.

Cushman & Wakefield executive managing directors Michael Hackett and Ryan Schubert represented the seller, Kierland Village CMH LLC. Developed in 2001, Kierland Village Center encompasses 118,226 square feet of retail space.

The property is located within the Kierland Master Planned Community.

City’s largest development in 5 years coming to Pima Center The Block at Pima Center, a 12-acre retail development, is coming to the northwestern corner of Loop 101 and Via de Ventura, developer MainSpring Capital announced.

MainSpring developed the nearby Pima Center, a 232-acre mixed-use project.

“We currently have 3,800 existing employees on-site at Pima Center, as well

as thousands of additional employees and residents in the nearby area,” said Curtis Brown, principal with MainSpring Capital Group. “Our visibility along Loop 101 and access to two different interchanges of the freeway make this a great location for retailers and restaurants.”

Plexus employees walk Pima Center for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Airpark-based Plexus Worldwide, a direct-selling health, wellness and weightmanagement company, launched “Chek it America,” a campaign against breast cancer.

Nearly 300 Plexus Worldwide employees took to the streets of Scottsdale in October dressed in matching pink “Chekit America” shirts, and walked 1 mile around the Pima Center to promote breast cancer awareness.

The goal is to make a statement nationwide in three categories: Chek it: encouraging everyone to do monthly breast self-exams.

Share it: Use social media t o s p re a d t h e w o rd a b o u t #ChekItAmerica.

Give it: Participate in a local walk, run, or donate to the cause.

During October, 25% of profits from all Plexus Breast Chek Kit sales went to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

The Scottsdale Charro Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to Arizona Helping Hands in support of the agency’s work providing basic essential needs to boys and girls in foster care.

As the Charros’ website states that the foundation awards grants to organizations thato “share our passion to strengthen our communities and build a better future for our children” According to Dan Shufelt, president and CEO of Arizona Helping Hands, the funds will be used to provide beds and cribs to give children in foster care a safe place to sleep. As the only provider of beds, cribs and items to nearly 19,000 kids in foster care, demand for services is heavy.

Festival of Speed to benefit children’s hospital

Collectors of high-performance, exotic and vintage sports cars will display 100 vehicles to support Phoenix Children’s Hospital during Scuderia Southwest’s Festival of Speed, presented by Russo & Steele, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, to raise money for Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

The festival at McCormick Hotel, 7401 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale brings together the Valley’s most iconic collection of cars, including classic and recent Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Porsches, and McLarens. For the first time, exotic motorcycles like Ducati and MV Augusta will participate. Also on display will be an authentic Gulf Mirage GT40 as raced at world-famous tracks like LeMans and Daytona.

“The Valley has arguably the greatest concentration of high-performance, exotic, and collector cars in the country and we’re excited about bringing that community together to support Phoenix Children’s Hospital,” said David Crofford, one of the show’s organizers.

The show is free to spectators, but there is a $60 fee to enter a vehicle. All fees go to Phoenix Childrens Hospital.

Biker Blast to aid Phoenix Children’s Hospital Bikers will make the annual pilgrimage from Phoenix Children’s Hospital to Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale in the Airpark on Saturday, Nov. 5, for the fifth Bob’s Biker Blast.

One-hundred percent of registration fees, concert tickets and T-shirt sales, as well as a portion of food and drink sales, benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital,.

Hundreds of riders will take part in honor of a patient, and many of those patients will be in attendance in a heartwarming party that shows the softer side of bikers.

The ride ends at Harley-Davidson of Scottsdale, where party goers will enjoy food, entertainment and performances by Kellie Pickler, Craig Morgan and Montgomery Gentry. Phoenix Children’s Hospital leaders, including chief financial officer Craig McKnight and assistant general council Evan Coppola, will join the ride.

Pre-registration is $20 per rider, $35 per pair and $15 per passenger. Day of registration it’s $25 per rider, $40 per pair and $15 per passenger. Registration fees include admission to Bob’s Biker Blast and concerts.

Flight school comes to Scottsdale Airport American Flyers Flight School opened a training facility at Scottsdale Airport on Nov. 1, and has scheduled an open house on Saturday, Nov. 12, that includes free lunch from 12-2 p.m.

The Airpark’s newest after-work gathering location is RA Sushi on the northeast corner of Scottsdale and Thunderbird roads.

“What I love about RA is the unique atmosphere; it makes me wish I could be a customer and just be a part of experiencing it,” says Paul Underwood. Instead, he’s general manager at the new RA (pronounced “raw”) location, which he says is home to the largest bar and outdoor setting yet among their restaurants.

“Participants work together and learn to roll sushi and how to make our signature rolls. It also includes the history of sushi,” he adds.

“It was just off the beaten path a bit,” Underwood explains. “Here we are in the middle of things and yet a destination. It’s more than a dining experience – it’s a community hub, actually.

“People are coming to watch games, or stopping by on the way home after work. They come in groups or on dates. Even out on the patio, you’re near Scottsdale Road, but you don’t notice the traffic because there is so much going on. Yet, there are so many different spaces here, it can also be intimate,” he adds.

Indicating the sushi-making area inside, Underwood explains that “it’s a different spin on the traditional sushi bar.”

Instead of a row of chairs or stools facing the staging area, there are attached tables seating four each.

“You can be there and interact with the sushi chef, yet you are sitting more traditionally with family or friends at a table. You don’t have to be in a row,” he explains.

Outside there is a fire table surrounded with casual seating plus bar stools and tables of various sizes. The bar bridges indoors with the sizable outdoor spaces.

Occasionally, a bump in the plan to come to RA for Happy Hour is when there’s a non-sushi fan in the crowd, Underwood acknowledges. He notes that the Happy Hour menu is much more than sushi.

“We even have great wings. No one needs to feel left behind.”

But he also has advice for those venturing into sushi for the first time.

Start with the Tempura Roll, he suggests. “It’s fully cooked for the beginner, with crab mix, tempura shrimp cake, asparagus and avocado.”

Next, he says, move on to the Viva Las Vegas Roll, which happens to be the most popular item on RA’s Happy Hour menu. It introduces

RA’s specialty rolls put a new spin on typical sushi items, according to Underwood.

“Our Crazy Monkey takes the traditional Philadelphia Roll to a new level of creativity and flavor, adding mango for a note of sweet flavor; the green is avocado, and the bits on top are cashew and tempura,” he explains.

The bowl features tuna, salmon, yellowtail, shrimp, avocado and cucumber on rice tossed in poke sauce, and it comes with miso soup. Alternatively, you can order it on greens instead to make it carb free.

RA’s sushi chefs get even more creative when customers forget where they are and order something from another sushi restaurant’s menu, adds Underwood.

“If we have the ingredients, we’ll make it for them, and at the best price possible. If they’re looking for something they had in another city, we just ask them to tell us what’s in it, and we’ll do our best to create it. But I’ll steer them next to one of our specialty rolls, and they usually decide they’re even better.”

For an insider tip, Underwood suggests trying Chili Ponzu sauce on a favorite dish or roll.

“It is good with anything, and I eat it in place of soy sauce.” Regular Ponzu sauce is another option, but he likes the chili version for the added spice. 

here’s a little extra zip in their sprints and leaps these days as Shelby and Bentley scamper around their backyard obstacle course in North Scottsdale.

The competitive Corgis seem to sense that something big is coming up.

Shelby, 7, and Bentley, 4, are among more than 900 dogs from 11 countries headed to WestWorld to compete in the 2016 Cynosport World Games, Nov. 9-13.

The headline events are the 29th annual Grand Prix of Dog Agility and the $10,000 Dog Agility Steeplechase.

Dogs at this level can complete a 170yard obstacle course in less than 40 seconds, and their success depends on how well their human partners help them navigate.

“The dogs don’t need training as much

as I do,” says Tami Rasmussen, owner of Shelby and Bentley.

She and her dogs get their instruction at Leaps N Bounds in Peoria.

Rasmussen says she discovered agility about 10 years ago, after adopting Belle, a mixed-breed Hurricane Katrina rescue.

“She was very traumatized. I was looking for a way to give her more confidence, and we found agility.”

After adopting Shelby from Arizona Cactus Corgi Rescue, Rasmussen got serious about agility training, and the Pembroke was ready for competition before she was 2 years old. Winning was in her blood, and she reached the master’s level in a year.

Dog-agility championships reflect Scottsdale’s fun side For recreation and relaxation, there’s no place better

By Mike Butler Scottsdale’s abundant parks and steady stream of fun events, like November’s 2016 Cynosport World Games at WestWorld, are just some of the many hundreds of reasons that make the East Valley city a great place to live.

The popular online personal-finance site WalletHub made that official in 2016 by ranking Scottsdale No. 1 on its list of “Best Cities for an Active Lifestyle,” No. 3 on its “Best Cities for Recreation,” No. 5 on its “Best Cities for Staycations” and No. 10 on its “Most Fun Cities in America.”

WalletHub’s “Best” lists are fairly scientific and thorough, but their analysts also get a little quirky. Some of the minor metrics for “Best & Worst Cities for Recreation,” for instance, include the cost of bowling and the average price of a sixpack of Heineken and a 1.5-liter bottle of white table wine.

(When was the last time you heard your Scottsdale neighbor raving about the three-game deal he got at the bowling alley, or saw him lining up at Total Wine with a six-pack of Heineken or a jug of cheap wine?

Breaking 80 at Grayhawk, or snagging a 12-bottle case of a fine California Chardonnay for $200, yeah, that’s more like it.)

In other WalletHub idiosyncratic metrics, Scottsdale ties for first in most beer gardens per capita and most spas per capita. In terms of spas, the city keeps good company with other top destinations, such as Las Vegas, Honolulu, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.

It’s all in good fun. Who else hosts the Dog Agility World Championships, an upcoming fun event at WestWorld?

Many of the major metrics WalletHub uses appear in multiple surveys, and they confirm what Scottsdale residents already know.

The city always scores high in most acres of parkland and number of public golf courses per capita. Although the city has some of the highest monthly fitnessclub fees in the United States (No. 82), it also ties five other major cities at No. 1 for the number of fitness centers per capita.

Interestingly, Scottsdale doesn’t fare so

well in the number of tennis courts, but it ranks better than neighbors Mesa (No. 95) and Gilbert (No. 97). Most of WalletHub’s examinations include 100 or 150 cities.

As you’d expect, weather receives heavy weighting in the finance site’s rankings.

Only one northern city, Minneapolis, cracked the Top 10 of best staycation cities. The city also ranked sixth for active lifestyles. Maybe cross-country skiing and general shivering have something to do with that?

As WalletHub points out, there’s a serious economic side to its “Best” lists.

Nice parks add value to homes. Active adults shave multiple millions of dollars per year off the cost of health care. And trails, parks, golf courses, museums and entertainment venues are the glue that binds communities.

It’s something to be thankful for as you, on Thanksgiving Day, gobble 4,500 calories and 229 grams of fat.

If you’re an average American.

But Scottsdale residents are anything but average.

burst through tunnels and leap hurdles. For fairness, hurdles are set at six different levels according to a dog’s height. For Corgis and other dogs measuring 17.5 inches or less, the bar is set at 18 inches. The big dogs jump 26 inches.

The hardest obstacle for dogs to learn, says Rasmussen, is the see-saw. The climb up is the easy part; the trick is for the dog to stop at the right place and let its weight ease the teeter-totter to the ground.

“It still scares Bentley a little bit,” says Rasmussen, a banker with JP Morgan Chase.

Although dog-agility contests are a race against the clock, scoring is based on faults, similar to equestrian show jumping.

Rasmussen just started working agility with her latest rescue adoption, Boss, a very handsome 14-month-old Australian Cattle Dog. In addition to training for the obstacles, agility dogs must learn how to deal with the confusion and crowd noise at events, she says.

Not surprisingly, dogs in the herding group excel at agility. In the absence of a herd or flock, agility becomes a dog’s task.

You’ll always see Corgis, shepherds, sheepdogs, Border Collies and Belgian Malinoises on the leader boards. Poodles,

terriers, retrievers, Dobermans, Shelties and Papillons also do well. Many mixed-breed dogs are successful, too, and are welcome to compete at United States Dog Agility Association events.

he Scottsdale Airpark is home to a variety of high-end automotive businesses, from dealerships and customizers to machine shops and auction hubs. Not surprisingly, the executives who run these enterprises are invariably avid car enthusiasts themselves.

For this year ’s driving issue, we asked owners of auto-centric Airpark businesses to talk about the vehicles they’re most passionate about and share a little inside knowledge on what makes the area so attractive to high-end auto aficionados.

If you prefer something sporty, for $263,752, this 2016 McLaren 650S is yours.

Selling hand-selected, pre-owned luxury vehicles from high-end manufacturers like Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Land Rover and Maserati has its perks for John Schlitt, who runs Luxury Auto Collection in an office park between the Greenway-Hayden Loop and the Scottsdale Airport runway.

“I’ve got 120 to 150 cars here to choose from on any given day,” Schlitt says. “I get to enjoy them before somebody else owns them.”

Given that sweet selection, what rides does Schlitt pick most often? “Usually I go for either Rolls-Royces or Ferraris,” he says. “Ferrari is second to none when it comes to performance and styling, and Rolls-Royce is the highest echelon for luxury — I really enjoy the Rolls-Royce Ghost and Wraith.”

Recently Luxury Auto Collection, which is housed in a hanger, added aircraft to its inventory, selling a couple of Citation 10s and a CJ3 for a combined $17 million.

“Now I have my pick between 120 cars and four jets,” Schlitt says, sounding somewhat guilty. “It’s like, ‘Where are you going today, and what are you taking?’”

Question: How did you get into selling high-end luxury vehicles?

Answer: I’ve been in the car business about 17 years. I moved to Scottsdale in 2005, and took on the position of general manager with Scottsdale Ferrari and Maserati for Penske Automotive Group. In 2009, I opened the Lotus dealership for Penske. And then in 2012 when we moved the Ferrari and Maserati store up north, I had the Ferrari and Maserati and Bentley and Rolls Royce dealerships for about three years. I resigned in January 2015 and opened this business. Coming from the super high-end exotic car business, it’s just really all I know.

Q: What kind of volume do you do?

A: We sell about 60 cars a month, and our average selling price is around $125,000. We probably sell about 20 cars a month to local folks. But nowadays in the used car market, everybody’s shopping online and they have cars from all around the country at their fingertips. So if you want a Black Ferrari and you find it sitting in Texas, well, it’s only $1,000 to ship the car here. And when you’re spending that kind of money, the shipping cost becomes a moot point. So that’s how we’ve been successful selling all over the country. When you’ve got the right product, pricing and presentation — the three P’s — you can really move some units right here out of the Airpark.

Q: Are there benefits to being located in the Airpark?

A: You know, in the high-end car business, Scottsdale is definitely a mecca, along with the Southern California and South Florida and Connecticut markets. It’s no surprise that the big conglomerates like Penske, Sonic Automotive and AutoNation are here. This is a very strong car market. There’s a lot of wealth here, and there’s a lot of wealth that gathers here in November 2016 Scottsdale Airpark News | 29

the form of snowbirds, who maybe have businesses in other parts of the country but feel like they can come to Scottsdale and kind of show off.

They feel safe in this environment owning and driving the higherend automobiles.

Q: What are your clients like?

A: With this kind of clientele, when your average selling price is in the hundreds of thousands, you’re always dealing with some pretty interesting individuals.

Everybody has their own story about how they’ve made their money to be able to afford the high-end automobiles, and I really enjoy getting to know our customers.

Obviously the folks that are buying these kinds of cars, they’ve negotiated for probably half their lifetimes, so that’s just in their DNA. But I think a lot of people would be surprised to learn they’re not as demanding as you would tend to believe.

However, they do expect a higher level of service.

In some ways, we’re kind of a concierge service. Obviously you’ve got to go above and beyond for these folks, whether that means delivering vehicles to their houses or having them on the tarmac when they land if they’re flying in from out of town. Just kind of tailoring their automobiles to their lifestyle.

Some people like to be discreet and others are rather flamboyant.

Q: Do you get many who are new to the luxury market, or are most already pretty knowledgeable of these cars?

A: Often they know more about the cars than we do. If they haven’t owned one before, their friends have, or they’ve been around them. Most of the time you just don’t go from one day driving a Toyota Camry to buying a Rolls-Royce.

It’s usually not the progression. But it does happen. Lottery winners, inheritance, trust funds. You sometimes get the firsttime exotic car buyer. But usually it’s an upgrade, or someone with a lot of wealth adding a new toy.

Q: Is it still mostly men buying these cars, or are you seeing more women now, too?

A: A lot of these guys, their wives enjoy the same stuff they enjoy. But there are plenty of successful women in this area that have car collections that would make most men jealous.

Mike Tomaszewski Co-owner (with wife Sherri), TA Performance Products 16167 N. 81st Street, Scottsdale Mike Tomaszewski has built a hugely successful Airpark business out of manufacturing a very specific part for a very specific car: a high-performance intake manifold for the 350-cubic-inch Buick V-8 engine. He built it for his own first car, a 1968 Buick station wagon, that he inherited from his dad, George, that the younger Tomaszewski was determined to turn into a race car. The part was such an innovation over the original factory equipment that the California-based parts supplier that Tomaszewski was buying parts from, Kenny Bell, began ordering hundreds for his nationwide business.

“The first sale went to Kenny Bell,” Tomaszewski says. “He bought a hundred manifolds and I ended up with about $17,000. And from that, I slowly progressed to making other parts. That was back in 1982. And we’ve been in Scottsdale the whole time.”

Today TA Performance Products is still the only manufacturer of the after-market intake manifold available for that engine — which secretly worries the entrepreneur, now 58. “It’s actually brought on some stressful thoughts, because if I cannot sell this business or hand it down to the next generation, I’m also going to be the one to crush it,” he says. “I’ve created a business where anybody on this planet who’s into Buicks and needs a part has to come to us. But if we decide we’d like to

retire and I can’t find somebody to carry it on, we close the doors, and it all ends.

Because nobody will ever pick this up.”

Question: How did you come to specialize in Buicks?

Answer: When I was in fourth grade, my father had traded in a 1964 Chevelle and picked us up from grade school in a 1968 Buick station wagon, with a three-speed on the column. He was pretty proud of that. Me, I found the ‘64 Chevelle more attractive. He also had a ‘56 Chevy, which I found much more attractive than a Buick station wagon.

As the years went on and we moved from Chicago to Phoenix, that was the only car we had as a family, and I was going to Chaparral High School and there were days that he allowed me to drive that car to school, so I started working on it. I put a four-barrel carburetor on it and started going to the racetrack in it. At one point we were out at Beeline Dragway and I didn’t come home right away, and my dad realized that he needed a new family car to get to work in. So he went out and bought another car and when I graduated high school, I was really interested in getting a Camaro. But my gift was that Buick station wagon.

Q: What vehicles are currently in your garage at home?

A: As far as old hotrods, I’ve got an ’87 Buick Grand National, which I bought

new. I’ve got an ’87 Buick Turbo Regal, a ’70 Buick Gran Sport, a ’70 Buick GS, a ’68 Buick Riviera. I currently own a ’68 Mustang, and a ’68 Skylark. We have a 2007 Corvette, I have a 1955 Buick Special, all original. And then there’s a couple of cars that belong to my kids — a 1972 Buick GS, and a 1970 Buick Skylark. I also have a few cars in the process of restoration: a ’71 Olds Cutlass convertible SX, a 1972 Buick stage 1 car, and another ’70 Buick GSX. And that’s not even including all the daily driver cars: There’s a couple of Excursions in there, and a ’71 Ford F-350 crew cab Dually, which serves as my tow vehicle. That’s probably the vehicle I actually drive the most.

Q: You could give Jay Leno a run for the money.

A: I think right now in that garage there’s 16 cars, plus jet skis and my enclosed 40-foot trailer. And I have another 1970 Buick GS that was my father’s car. I need to restore that. And of course I still have my ’68 Buick station wagon, which is still my race car.

Q: What would you say is your dream vehicle at the moment?

A: I don’t really have an ideal vehicle.

Now (wife and business co-owner) Sherri, on the other hand, might pick a Mercedes, or there’s a Porsche four-door that she likes. I guess if I was going to buy something today that I find interesting, it

would be a new Dodge Challenger. The lines on that car catch my eye, it brings you back to the ’70s, and that’s what I base my business on — the old muscle cars.

Q: What does a typical day look like in your business?

A: Because we’re a mail-order company, we sell products around the world—we ship to Japan, Germany, Denmark, New Zealand, Kuwait — so we have to service these calls as they come in.

Q: What brought you to North Scottsdale? Why did you select the Airpark for your base?

A: I was living in North Scottsdale, and I was running this business out of my garage. As it grew, we started looking for a building around here and met a realtor named Gaylord Greenfield who suggested we build our own instead. I figured having a building by Scottsdale Airport would always be valuable real estate, and at age 26 or 27, I was already looking at my retirement. Sherri was concerned — as a business, we had only made about $40,000 so far — but I told her the building was like a goldfish bowl. If we got a little one, it would only grow so big. But if we took that goldfish and put him in a 10-gallon tank, he’d have more room to grow. This was a bigger fishbowl.

Q: How does Barrett-Jackson and the rest of January’s auto-auction week in Scottsdale impact your business?

A: I purchased one car from there, my son’s ’70 Skylark. It was the first car on the block the year that Barrett-Jackson got flooded out. But how it impacts is we get a customer base that comes into town for these auctions and the traffic pattern increases immensely. So we make new customers and friends during that time — as we also do during the TPC golf tournament. When my three kids were young, they’d come out here and sell parking spots for the golf tournament, and it was good training for working with customers, arranging a sale and managing money. My oldest is now a mechanical engineer for General Dynamics, my middle one is going to grad school to become a sports therapist and my youngest is going to school to become an optometrist. So everything we’ve done here has also redirected goals for our children.

Joe Caraway and Kevin Curtis Co-owners, Rov-N-Techs 15455 N. 83rd Way, Scottsdale As master technicians running a shop exclusively dedicated to servicing and customizing Land Rovers, a luxury line of four-wheel-drive vehicles owned by the British brand Jaguar, you might expect co-owners Joe Caraway and Kevin Curtis to each have their own fleets of Land Rovers in their respective garages. But you’d be wrong.

“Actually, we’re both Volkswagen guys,” says Curtis, who says he and Caraway met while they both worked at Land Rover North Scottsdale.

Their mastery of the tricky four-wheeldrive luxury car led to the friends leaving the dealership in 2006 to start their own shop, first in a small building near the Costco off of Hayden Road, and now in larger digs about a block away.

Question: What made you decide to open your business in the Airpark?

Curtis: Most people who own Land Rovers live in this part of the Valley. I commute every day from east Mesa, and you don’t see these cars out there.

So we had to put the business where the customers are. Obviously we have to compete with the dealership. We don’t compete with other independent shops because, typically, they won’t work on these cars. They don’t want to mess with them, because they’re so quirky and so unique. They’re not Chevys or Fords, they’re their own beast. So we figured there was a hole in the market. And it’s worked out pretty good for us. It’s just the

two of us. We had another technician, but he only stuck around for about a year. So we try to keep the work flow manageable.

Q: What vehicles are currently in your garage?

Caraway: My favorite car right now is this Model T (he points to a framed photo of an immaculate red Tin Lizzie on his desk), because it has personal significance to me. My grandfather had it in the ’60s and restored it to the condition you see here, but then he sold it and it was kept in a garage for about 30 years. I hired a private detective here in Scottsdale and it took him about 10 days to find it. I had the VIN, and he tracked it down. Originally it wasn’t for sale, but we talked and I struck a deal with the owners. I don’t drive it too much, but it’s drivable. I didn’t need to restore it much.

I’ve also got a 1958 Volkswagen double-cab pickup truck that’s kind of rare. It’s all restored. And I’ve got a Volkswagen Thing (Type 181, manufactured from 1968 to 1983), all original paint and engine.

Curtis: Mainly, we’re Volkswagen guys.

That’s how Joe and I started hanging out together. There’s one up here in the shop, that’s a 1953 Volkswagen pickup truck that Joe’s restoring. My favorite car is a Volkswagen 21-window micro bus. As soon as the weather cools down, I’ll take the family out and go cruising in it. There is a Volkswagen Thing that I’m restoring for my youngest son. I did a 1960 Beetle for my oldest son. It took me five years to restore it. I started when he was about 10, and when he turned 16 I asked him if he

wanted the car, but he wasn’t into cars, he’s a computer guy. So he said, ‘No, I’d rather sell it and put the money toward college.’

Q: Do either of you have a dream car you’d still like to own?

Curtis: That Volkswagen bus is my dream car. I’ve always wanted one of those. I actually started my career in England, working at a Land Rover dealership in 1995. I did three years apprenticeship there, but I always wanted a Beetle, so I bought one in England and restored it, then I moved here in 1997.

Caraway: I’m a fan of the early Volkswagen buses, too. They can just get so expensive they get out of our league. My dad had a VW shop when I was a kid, had that for about 30 years. So I grew up around them.

Q: What attracts you both to the VW bus?

Curtis: Just the simplicity of it. It’s so much fun to drive. They’re not fast, they don’t drive well, but they’re so much fun.

Life slows down when you drive it.

This is my daily driver right here (pointing to a recent model Volkswagen in the garage). You get in that and cruise the 101 at crazy speeds. But you can’t drive fast in the bus. You have to slow everything down and take the time. It’s just nice, it’s a different experience.

Q: What were your first cars?

Caraway: My first car was a 1976 Mercury Cougar, a big boat.

Curtis: Mine was a 1976 Ford Escort, which I eventually crashed into the back of a London bus. But that just gave me an excuse to buy my first Beetle! 

The production team of the Grand Prix of Scottsdale has created a weekend of events reminiscent of the Great Gatsby era.

…continued from page 35 Napoleon Smith III, among the principals of the Grand Prix, says last year’s event was so successful and fun that he and the others who produced it will offer an even bigger and better version this year.

“The race is free to the public, and more streets are closed for this than any other event in Scottsdale,” Smith says.

Southwest Human Development, an event partner this year, hosts several Gatsby-theme charity events during the weekend; including a Friday night kickoff black-tie Gatsby Under the Stars Gala and two-day Gatsby Lawn Party, on Saturday and Sunday.

Jake Adams, chief development officer at Southwest Human Development, says he and the organization, the state’s largest non-profit dedicated to early-childhood development, got to know Smith last year, when the non-profit was the beneficiary of a silent auction.

“Last year, there was a party before the race, but it was not a full affair and spread like it will be this time, and we didn’t have a gala or lawn party last year,” Adams says.

“We had stayed in touch with Napoleon, and in the early spring of this year we spoke with him and said there is so much that needs to be done with this year’s Grand Prix. We wanted to take on the organization and planning of the parties.”

The timing for Southwest Human Development to help the Grand Prix also

was perfect. Although non-profits often are involved with hosting traditional galas, Adams says there is not another opportunity like this during the fall.

“This event is so different and so unique, it was a no-brainer that we would be part of it,” Adams says.

As for the Roaring ’20s theme, Adams says he, Smith and the others involved in planning the weekend wanted to bring people back to a time when everyone was

having a wonderful time, the economy was great and life was fantastic.

History of Grand Prix of Scottsdale

Looking back a couple of years, Smith says his desire to be a race-car driver—even if only for a day—inspired him to bring Monaco-style racing to Scottsdale.

“I was talking with some of my friends, and we were saying how cool it would be if we could race cars through Old Town Scottsdale as thousands of people cheered us on,” Smith says.

Since Smith says he and his buddies realized they were probably not ever going to have careers as actual race-car drivers, they took matters into their own hands.

Smith helped found Vintage Kart Company in Mesa, a business that builds cigar-shaped cars that look like vintage racers from the olden racing days of Monaco. The cars can go as fast as 40 mph and are about 8 feet long.

After speaking with Scottsdale Mayor Jim Lane and explaining their hopes to host the first-ever Grand Prix of Scottsdale, Smith says he and his friends got the green flag.

“When we went to visit with the mayor, we brought along one of the cars.

Once he sat in the car he was sold on it,” Smith says.

Smith says he and his friends were so busy at last year’s Grand Prix that they never actually got the chance to race the cars.

This year will be different, Smith says, adding that he and his buddies will get at least an hour to race along the closed-off streets, fulfilling their boyhood

In all, Smith says more than 200 drivers will take turns at the wheels of the 40 cars, with about six drivers making up each team.

“Driving these 1920s-style race cars will allow average people the chance to do something that has always been on their bucket list,” Smith says.

Plenty to do, see, and enjoy

Adams says he has been delighted by the outpouring of local restaurant owners who wanted to be part of the Grand Prix of Scottsdale.

For example, he says the Gala will include tasty selections from Tarbell’s, Marcellino’s and Casablanca Lounge, and Nothing Bundt Cake, DK Dogs, Vanilla Swirl and POBoyz Lobster Rolls will be on hand at the Lawn Party on Saturday.

Sunday’s Lawn Party will feature Pizzeria Bianco, DK Dogs, Nothing Bundt Cake and many others, Adams says.

Adams and others from Southwest Human Development have had a great time planning and organizing many of the events that are part of the Grand Prix.

“We are having an absolute blast,” he says. “We have made new connections, and it’s just been incredible.”

For the thousands of people who are expected to attend, Adams says they will do much more than enjoy a Roaring ’20s experience and cheer on their favorite racers.

They will also contribute in a tangible way to the work that Southwest Human Development does every day.

“We help parents with young kids to age 5. We have 40 programs and 900 people on staff, and we help 135,000 kids and families every year,” Adams says, adding that among the many things the non-profit does is distribute thousands of books to neighborhoods where kids don’t usually have access to reading material.

“We teach parents the importance of reading to their kids every single day, and we also have a helpline that is free to anyone in the state that offers help to any family with kids from birth to 5.”

Adams says he is grateful to Smith and Southwest Human Development for their planning.

“We are humbled by the opportunity and excited to put on a really good party and enjoy the whole 1920s Grand Prix experience. But at the end of the day, we could not do this without the great work that everyone is doing,” Adams says. 

Valerie Thompson was a frequent motorcycle street racer until one of her friends suggested she take it to the racetrack.

“A few months later, we did just that,” says the 49-year-old Scottsdale resident, who calls Scottsdale Road her beginner’s track.

It’s not recommended – in fact it’s not even legal, unless you’re in the Grand Prix of Scottsdale – but there’s been no looking back.

Valerie Thompson says that when she made the decision to give up banking for racing she was "very intimidated and very nervous."

When it comes to “what they’re driving,” what she drives now isn’t seen on the streets of Scottsdale among the Ferraris and Maseratis.

Known as “America’s Queen of Speed,” Thompson had been drag racing motorcycles on quarter-mile tracks throughout the United States in the All Harley Drag Racing Association and NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle Series since she switched careers from banking in 2006.

“When I started, I didn’t know how to race,” she says. “I just saw it on TV or went to a few NHRA events. I never thought I would be racing. I picked it up pretty well, though.”

Now, she’s a seven-time motorcycle land-speed record holder.

And on Sept. 1, Thompson piloted her flame-red "7" Racing Team streamliner to a blistering 304 mph run at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Bonneville, Utah, becoming

the world's fastest female motorcycle racer.

She had set her sixth land-speed record in 2014 with a run of 208.71 mph and became one of few female members in the ECTA 200 MPH Club. Thompson is also part of the Red Hat of the Bonneville 200 MPH Club, of which there are 24 females out of 730 members at Bonneville.

“I was very intimidated and very nervous,” she says of her entry into racing.

Now that her season has wrapped, Thompson is seeking sponsors for next year, which runs from March to November.

She is the first female to appear on the cover of “Iron Roads” magazine and was named Person of the Week on Dragbike.com.

Thompson has inspired filmmakers, authors and songwriters, too, having appeared in documentaries, Discovery Channel programs and a GoDaddy Super Bowl commercial. Her racing gear is on display at the Hopkins BMW Motorcycle Museum in Highland, Maryland.

Traditional upbringing

Thompson had a “traditional upbringing” in Washington state, with her mom and father, who worked in construction.

She chose to be a banker, like her aunt, working in the field for 13 years before losing her job.

“I got laid off and that’s when I really, truly had to consider, ‘What does Valerie want to do going forward? What does she really want to do with her life?’” Thompson says rhetorically.

“I could have easily returned to banking. I did a lot of things in my 13 years. It was one of my favorite jobs ever—until I started doing this.”

Arizona was familiar territory for her. Even though she lived in Washington, she would head to Scottsdale for Arizona Bike Week annually.

She took baby steps into racing professionally.

“I started officially in 2006,” Thompson says. “It’s been on and off due to sponsorship. This is my full-time job. When I didn’t have a sponsor, it was tough as far as not being out there and racing. I’d watch it on TV and then I’d pick up a sponsor and go race. I did ask myself if I was doing this for the right reasons.”

She’s quick to justify that she is.

“The biggest reason why I’m so successful is I put my heart and soul into all of this,” Thompson says. ‘I don’t give up.

"I have a great team behind me. It helps me look good. They help push my buttons and my limits.”

That includes her land speed-racing team, which she created in 2012.

Her family is relatively supportive.

“Over time, they’ve become more accepting,” she says. “My dad doesn’t really like to hear me talk about 300 mph.

"I told him, ‘Well, you better get used to 300. I’m going to try to get to 400 next year.’”

She gives the same advice to fledgling racers that she once received.

“Be calm and carry on,” she says. “You need to breathe and relax.

"Those are the two pieces of advice that went a long way for me. I’m under so much stress launching a motorcycle that the smallest piece of advice goes far.

“I’m putting my life on the line going 300 mph,” she says.

“But I can’t get rid of the adrenaline. It’s like a drug.”

on’t start packing to move into the last luxury tower of Scottsdale Quarter just yet.

Although preliminary work is under way on a dirt lot on the eastern edge of Scottsdale Quarter for the eight-story tower, Block L, neither the developer nor the city could provide a potential completion date.

And project officials have not shared many specifics of their plans.

Paperwork originally was filed by WP Glimcher, which is now under the corporate umbrella of Washington Prime. “Unfortunately and per our corporate office, we are not able to release any information at this point,� according to Alison Goodman, Washington Prime marketing director.

In a zoning entitlement document being considered by Scottsdale, the development is detailed as having six stories of luxury-residential units above retail stores and office space on the first two levels.

There are to be two levels of parking below grade, and two levels above grade. Landscaping and architectural masking will hide the above-ground portion to integrate it with the whole building’s look.

S

ince Joey Maggiore was 11 years old, his father stressed that fantastic service and good food are the cornerstones of successful restaurants.

Maggiore and his wife, Cristina, have taken that to heart with The Hash Kitchen, Creative Breakfast and Bar in The Shops at Gainey Village. An additional location is opening at 14832 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd., as part of the 1-year-old Airparkbased Maggiore Culinary Concepts.

"We took a corporate space at 82nd and Frank Lloyd Wright, so I drive in that area every day," Maggiore says. "There are so many people there. That spot became available and I said I would love to take it.”

The 4,800-square-foot space will seat 160 guests with a lounge, an indoor-andoutdoor bar area with an open-air dining option and their trademark Build-YourOwn Bloody Mary bar.

“That’s one of our signatures right there,” he says. “We have 50 toppings. On the weekend, we have meatballs, fried mozzarella, fried raviolis and mini corn dogs.

People get crazy with Bloody Marys. We move 500 to 600 on Saturdays and Sundays.

We have a DJ, who is fun but he’s not

overwhelmingly loud. It’s an upbeat vibe.”

All age groups, he says, love the DJs. “We get some ladies in walkers who just love it,” he says. “If there’s a crazy wait, at least you can come in, listen to music, have a Bloody Mary or mimosa.

“We train our staff to treat this like a house party. Every table must be a member of your family. We strive to do that. Everybody must show off their personality. You must be yourself, your own personality. If I tell them how to be, then we’re all robots.”

Maggiore has been in the kitchen since he was 11, when he cut bread during the holiday season. At 18, he attended culinary school, but left halfway through it to work full time for his father, Tomaso Maggiore. Tomaso established Tomaso’s Italian Restaurant in the Camelback Corridor in 1977.

“I then had the opportunity to go to California and open a restaurant,” Maggiore says. “My first restaurant was on Coronado Island. It was a small bistro on Orange Avenue. I was there for seven years, before I sold it to the owners of Miracle Mile Deli.

“I thought, ‘I hate this. You’re crazy.’ Then I was moved up to dishwasher and I’d say ‘Yay!’ It’s tough work, but the passion came to me. With the restaurant business, you must have this passion. I get up every morning excited to create menus, excited to work, and that’s a good thing.”

As executive chef, Maggiore created the menu at The Hash Kitchen, which offers nontraditional hashes, eggs benedict, frittatas, scramblers, pancakes and waffles. For lunch, The Hash Kitchen serves the likes of crab rolls ($16), Cubano sandwiches ($14) and blackened salmon salads ($15).

“We do all of our own menu development in all of our restaurants,” he says. “My favorite part is cooking. Everything’s been done in the restaurant business, but when you can put your own spin on it and change classic dishes to what you do, that’s the real art.”

Maggiore has a favorite dish, but was apprehensive about another.

“Cristina’s tamale cakes,” he says without hesitation about the dish that comes with a poached egg.

“I love the sweet corn cakes. I used to go to Mexican places and eat it all the time.

“I’m not a French toast fan at all, but the coconut

French toast, when I tried it, I said, ‘Wait, I really like this.’ It was one of the dishes that really stuck with me when we were creating the menu. The carnitas hash was another one. It’s a fun play on hash. But our lemon and ricotta pancakes, that’s our signature.”

His goal with all of his restaurants is to create something unique.

“You don’t want to be the horses in the races,” he says, fashioning his hands in the shape of blinders. “I want customers to walk away, see and feel different things.”

Going forward, The Hash Kitchen is slated to expand again early next year, at 44th Street and Indian School in Arcadia, and another Tomasso’s at Pinnacle Peak and Scottsdale roads.

The Hash Kitchen on Frank Lloyd Wright is designed with the Bloody Mary bar attached to the regular bar, to expedite customer service.

“It’s so hard to staff one spot,” he says. “It’s harder for the servers to go back and forth. We’re going to more of an upbeat vibe, with chalk art, which is tasteful. The lighting is a little different. There are a lot of booths.

“Everyone loves booths. We have twice as many booths. We have a nice patio outside. The awning will not be ready for 100 days, but we have umbrellas ready. It’s a fun, fun space.” 

Is economy slouching toward market collapse?

A

s we approach the fourth quarter of 2016, I can’t remember the last time the stock market has faced more ominous obstacles in the closing weeks of a largely Fed-engineered bull market.

Not even in 2000 or 2007 did we have so much data standing in opposition to a market that just didn’t seem to want to face reality.

You may recall that this year three major brokerage firms called for a significant selloff of “cataclysmic” proportions, exhorting their clients to “sell everything, except high quality bonds.”

In my 27 years managing money, I’ve never seen even one similar warning issued by such firms.

Here is just a partial list of the economic and geopolitical obstacles currently facing this nearly 8- year-old bull market: • According to FactSet S&P 500 earnings are falling at the fastest rate since The Great Recession, and the third quarter marked the first time the index has seen six consecutive quarters of year-over-year declines since 2009.

• U.S. commercial bankruptcies are soaring, up 38% from a year ago, the 11th month in a row of increases.

• Factory orders have plunged for the 22nd

month in a row, the longest streak in U.S. history, and one which has always, without exception, coincided with a recession.

Since 2014, the U.S. has added 540,000 waiters and bartenders, while losing 37,000 manufacturing workers.

The Euro Bank Crisis of 2016 continues, with share prices of many of Europe’s biggest banks down 20-60%, and shares of Monte dei Paschi Di Siena, a bank whose roots date to 1472, down a whopping 90% now. Think about that: Of all of the economic events—wars, famine, conquests—of the last 544 years, none has had as devastating an impact on this bank as the current banking climate in Europe.

The GDP of 15 of the G-20 countries is showing average growth of only 0.47%, hovering just above recessionary levels.

Even Germany, the largest and strongest economy of the Eurozone, has a GDP of only 0.4%.

Existing home sales stumbled in August and September as inventory dwindled further. In key regions of the country, some homes have been on the market more than 200 days, usually a sign of a market anticipating further price reduc-

tions amid a slowing economy, and often a precursor to recession.

• Wall Street’s IPO (initial public offering) business is now the worst in 20 years, according to the Wall Street Journal, primarily due to low interest rates and cheaply available capital. As of last week, only 68 companies have gone public this year compared to 138 in 2015, a drop of 62% from the same period the year prior.

• Billionaire investors are delivering dire warnings of a pending sell-off with many saying that the risks are so much more on the down side, adding, “We’ve never been in a world like this.” These include Ray Dalio, Paul Singer, Carl Icahn, Sam Zell, George Soros, Stanley Druckenmiller, Jefferey Gundlach and Robert Citrone.

At the Fed’s most recent Open Market Committee meeting last month, nine out of 12 Fed presidents lobbied to raise rates immediately, yet these were overruled by Janet Yellen, making it all the more probable that a second 0.25% rate hike will finally be announced at the December meeting. If that hike is rued with the same intensity on Wall

Street as last December’s rate hike of the same amount, we’re looking at a potentially massive sell-off taking us officially into bear-market territory.

When one considers that we now are well past the midpoint of the eighth year of a bull market largely of the Fed’s creation, when the average duration of a bull market is 3.7 years, it’s not hard to surmise what is coming. Add in the unknowns of the election this month coupled with the continued erosion of the economic data listed above, and any prudent investor/observer would be wise to be cautious, take profits, and prepare for the coming storm.

ommercial lease rates are quoted as full service, or triple net, or industrial or modified gross.

They vary according to how much of the building’s operating and/or occupancy expenses are included in the base rental rate. Operating expenses typically consist of property taxes, casualty insurance and common-area maintenance costs. Occupancy expenses include utility and janitorial expenses, but not telecommunications costs.

Full service, also known as “gross”: In a fullservice lease, typical of Class A and B multi-tenant office and medical properties, the building’s operating and occupancy expenses are included in the base rental rate.

Of note is that this type of lease generally references a base year, generally the first year of the lease term, which establishes the amount of operating/occupancy expenses included in the base rental rate. In subsequent years, tenants pay, as additional rent, a pro-rata share of any increases

in the operating/occupancy expenses.

Insight: I suggest setting an annual cap on the amount that controllable operating/ occupancy expenses can increase, and specify that property management is a controllable expense.

Triple net: Most industrial and retail properties, as well as office and medical buildings that are separately metered, are commonly leased on a triple-net basis, I which the tenant is charged a base rental rate plus a pro-rata share of the operating expenses of the building plus all of its occupancy costs.

The term NNN derives its name from the three things that are not included as part of the base rent (i.e., property taxes, casualty insurance and common area maintenance.

Insight: The acronym CAM is sometimes used interchangeably with NNN, but these terms are not the same. Therefore, when discussing the total costs of occupancy, tenants are cautioned to confirm the components and amounts of each of the NNN expenses, as

Industrial, or modified, gross: In an industrial, or modified, gross lease, the tenant pays a base rate plus some of the operating expenses, as well as its cost of utilities and janitorial services. When evaluating an industrial/modified gross lease, make certain you clearly understand which operating expenses are included in the base rental rate, which are not and the estimated amounts of each. Insight: Some landlords now add a surcharge for water, sewer and trash to industrial/modified gross leases, which can easily increase the total rental costs by 5 to 15%.

Regardless of the name that the landlord or listing agent/broker uses to describe the lease rate, the challenge that tenants have is to independently confirm which operating and/or occupancy expenses will be assessed in addition to the base rent, and then compare and contrast the out-the-door, all-inclusive prices of competing properties.  Stephen A. OSHA’s new post-accident reporting rule impacts drug testing

Requirements change for recording workplace injuries and illnesses; new right to report free from retaliation; curtailment of drug testing

W

ith the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, Congress created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Under OSHA law, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their workers.

OSHA covers most private-sector employers and workers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and other U.S. jurisdictions, either directly through federal OSHA or through an OSHAapproved state plan. Arizona is covered under an OSHA-approved state plan.

Every year, millions of workers suffer serious job-related injuries and illnesses.

Among other mandates, OSHA requires that covered employers keep accurate records of work-related injuries and illnesses. For decades, OSHA has required employers to keep track of the workers’ injuries and illnesses by recording them in an OSHA log.

Under a final rule, codified at C.F.R. § 1904 (the “Final Rule”), OSHA will now require that some information on workplace injuries and illnesses (already required to be collected) be submitted for posting on OSHA’s website. The information will be made available in a searchable database that the agency states will be the “largest publicly available data set on work injuries and illnesses, enabling researchers to better study injury causation, identify new workplace safety hazards before they become widespread and evaluate the effectiveness of injury

and illness prevention activities.”

According to OSHA, all personal information will be removed before reports are made public.

The Final Rule requirements apply to: (1) employers with 250 or more employees that are currently required to keep OSHA injury and illness records, and, (2) employers with 20-249 employees that are classified in certain industries with historically high rates of occupational injuries and illnesses.

The Final Rule will cover about 476,000 businesses and will cost approximately $15 million per year.

The reporting requirements of the Final Rule become effective Jan. 1. Requirements will be phased in over two years, with the first set of data due to OSHA by July 1, 2017.

The Final Rule also emphasizes workers’ rights to report injuries without fear of retaliation, and states that employers must have an appropriate reporting procedure that does not deter workers from reporting. Specifically, the Final Rule will require the following antiretaliation actions: (1) employers must inform workers about their right to report work-related injuries and illnesses without the threat of retaliation; (2) employers must implement reasonable procedures for reporting injuries and illnesses that do not discourage workers from speaking up; and (3) employers must incorporate existing anti-retaliation rules into their practices.

Many employers conduct postaccident drug and alcohol testing policies to promote workplace safety, as part of accident investigation efforts, and in the hope of reducing workplace accidents and workers’ compensation claims. However, OSHA now takes the position that “blanket

post-injury drug testing policies deter proper reporting” because employees fear being required to take a drug test.

Employers should be aware that the Final Rule does not wholesale ban drug testing of employees who are involved in an accident. However, the Final Rule does prohibit employers from using drug testing or the threat of drug testing as a form of adverse action against employees who report injuries or illnesses.

According to OSHA, “(t)o strike the appropriate balance,” drug testing policies should limit post-incident testing to situations in which employee drug use is likely to have contributed to the incident, and for which the drug test can accurately identify impairment caused by drug use.

OSHA’s guidance further notes that “(e)mployers need not specifically suspect drug use before testing, but there should be a reasonable possibility that drug use by the reporting employee was a contributing factor to the reported injury or illness in order for an employer to require drug testing.”

OSHA lists the following examples of injuries where drug testing is not appropriate: repetitive strain injury or injuries caused by a lack of machine guarding, or a machine or tool malfunction.

Employers should review their postinjury drug-testing policies to ensure that they do not contain blanket testing procedures that run counter to the Final Rule. A Formula for Success: Have a great pit crew

everal years ago in Singapore, I met with a senior vice president of human resources for a large bank that was in major expansion throughout Asia. His concern was rapid growth.

The goal was to develop the right culture and the right leadership in a time of transformational change. Like many people, he’d always thought that coaching was a remedial solution used as a last resort to salvage underperformers.

But the buzz about coaching was changing and he was curious.

So there I was.

Formula 1 auto racing was in town, a crazy and fun week on the island. So the conversation began with racing. Which roads would be closed? Would we be in the stands or watching from an office building several stories up? And which parties would we attend?

Then we turned to coaching. How does it work? Who should get a coach? What are the benefits? He was eager for answers.

But I still had racing on the brain. After all, Formula 1 is pretty much the crème de la crème of the racing world. Fastest cars. Most qualified drivers. Most skilled builders and technicians. Most sophisticated race courses.

A race always begins with a warm-up lap before moving into high gear. Along the way, there are pit stops to make repairs and change tires. Every team develops its own pit-stop strategy, a big part of which is assessing the environment and making tire choices based on wet and dry conditions.

The driver is in there alone, traveling at remarkable speeds for extended periods, and then pulling in to have a highly qualified team check things out and get him back on the track, ship-shape and ready to roar.

So I explained that a coach is a high-flying, hard-charging executive’s pit crew.

Before a new project/assignment/public event, a coaching session is like the warm-up lap. It’s a chance to test the track, test the tires, test the environment.

When working with a client on the edge of a new beginning, a coach helps clarify where they’re going, what obstacles might

be encountered, how the race should be run.

Then, just like the pit crew, the coach pulls a client aside for a break occasionally.

What’s changed? Is the race still the race we started or have conditions changed? Will the resources we took onboard at the beginning get us to the finish line?

Those resources might look like human resources. Does the organization have the right people onboard?

It might also be personal resources. Does the client have the presence and image needed to be successful? Does he or she have the communication, time management, negotiation, listening, writing, speaking, strategic, or any other of a myriad of skills necessary for the particular market environment? If not, what resources and repairs are needed and where can those be found?

Formula 1 cars are the fastest in the world because of the way they (and their drivers) can handle the corners – technically, it’s called lateral acceleration.

Suffice it to say, it’s the ability to navigate through a turn at high speeds and keep the car on the track. Just like change in the real world. We’re going along. Everything is fine.

Easy to run at top speed on a straight away.

And then boom.

A sharp left pops up. Sometimes we see them coming. Sometimes we don’t. But life, personal and professional, is full of change.

There are those who crash in times of change. And those who get through but it’s squealing around the turn on two wheels and it takes a long time after all four are back on solid ground before the wobbling settles.

And then there are those who execute the turns beautifully. Aerodynamic grace made possible by preparing for the race and knowing the pit crew can be trusted.

“And that’s coaching,” I concluded.

He smiled. He shook my hand.
