Richard “Dick” Pickup, a devoted golfer, generous philanthropist, and studied investor, passed away on April 25, 2024. While his generosity and leadership in the community were widely recognized, those who knew him best remember him first and foremost for his passion for the game of golf.
Dick’s enduring love of golf, especially tournament play, reflected his spirit of competition, camaraderie, and joy in the game. The Pickup Invitational proudly honors his legacy and the passion for golf he shared with all of us.
A short-game master, he was rarely seen without his hickoryshafted Callaway wedge in hand. A true competitor, Dick played in and won countless golf tournaments across California, winning numerous trophies at The Vintage Club, Big Canyon and Rock Creek Country Club. Dick played in The Cravens at San Gabriel Golf Club for 53 years and holds the distinction of being the oldest player ever to compete.
The Pickup Invitaional, inspired by The Cravens Invitational, will honor Dick’s legacy with its own unique mix of elite competition and outstanding camaraderie at Newport Beach Country Club - one of California’s premier country clubs.
THE ULTIMATE GATHERING OF GOLF, COMARADERIE, AND FRIENDSHIP.
On behalf of our Members and staff, we are excited for The Pickup Invitational inaugural event this year.
This tournament will honor the legacy of Richard “Dick” Pickup, the patriarch of the family stewarding Newport Beach County Club who passed away in 2024. Dick loved golf and had a passion for the competition and camaraderie from tournament golf.
We envision this tournament to be the ultimate gathering of golf, camaraderie, and fellowship. A fun format with great course conditions and excellent food and beverage choices will be the hallmark of this event. The format for this event is alternate shot of partners, and there is no formal opening party or awards reception.
Invitations have been extended to Members of our Club, and selected quests as recommended by our membership.
We hope you will join us and look forward to having you as a contestant in The Pickup!
All the best.
