COMEDY SANS SLEEVES Larry the Cable Guy coming to town to rehash his beginnings Lynette Carrington » The Entertainer!

Y

ou might not know Daniel Whitney, but you know his good ‘ole boy character. He’s the blue collar everyman; the redneck next door. He’s Larry the Cable Guy—perhaps the least crude, yet somehow controversial comedian in the country. “I think there are a lot of people that just judge a book by the cover when it’s with me,” he says. “People always say I’m one of those acts that people really, really can’t stand or really, really like. And the people that really, really like me have seen me and the people who really, really don’t like me, they just read stuff that’s written about me. “If they would actually come to a show, they would enjoy the show. It’s all goofy one-liner type stuff and nonthreatening. It’s funny and I just enjoy what I do.” Whitney broke onto the comedy scene when he appeared in 2003’s “Blue Collar Comedy Tour,” a stand-up film gone massive filmed at Downtown Phoenix’s Comerica Theatre, then dubbed Dodge Theatre. The longevity of the Larry the Cable Guy character is perhaps due to the fact that he’s just so mass marketable—and likable to most. He comes complete with trademarks in his sleeveless plaid shirts and baseball caps. Whitney’s catchy phrases “Lord, I apologize” and “Git-RDone,” can be grinding or knee-slapping, depending on whom you ask. Despite his southern persona, Whitney is originally from Pawnee City, Nebraska. No matter where he’s from, though, he’s still relatively well-versed in playing the Wild West that is the Valley. “I enjoy Arizona. There are a lot of Nebraskans that live in Arizona,” he says. “It’s like a suburb of Omaha or something.” Larry the Cable Guy is the ultimate everyman’s comic. Just about anyone can appreciate the humor of his sweet-natured character, who, at the end of the day, has his heart in the right place. “He’s just a nice fellar...,” muses Whitney about Larry the Cable Guy. Really, Larry might not be so much of an alter ego as he is a way for Whitney

to go over-the-top with his blue collar, Southern-inspired humor. The Larry character has gained a new generation of fans thanks to his voiceover work as tow truck Mater in the film “Cars.” But his wife is perhaps Mater’s biggest cheerleader, and that’s because she’s Whitney’s biggest cheerleader, too. “My wife pretty much describes me as (the character) Mater because I really love that little cartoon and I wanted to put as much of me in the cartoon as I could and that’s what [I] did,” Whitney says. “When I do Mater, I just put on an accent—make it country-fried truck. The way Mater acts in that movie is basically my personality to a ‘T’ and that’s why my wife loves that movie—because it’s literally my personality that’s in that truck.” Like many comics, Larry the Cable Guy has his share of wacky fans—to say the least. At one show in Albany, New York, a women dropped ‘trou and asked him to sign her appendix scar. He politely obliged because, well, he loves his fans. Now that’s commitment. Sleeveless plaid shirts make Larry the Cable Guy instantly identifiable, but they’re not just a kitschy set piece in his act. “The sleeveless thing… when I did the very first Blue Collar movie, I always wore flannel shirts onstage with my jeans and loafers because I’ve always been kind of chubby. Now I’m fat, but losing weight, but I generally run chubby,” he says. “Flannel shirts I love because they just kind of hang really good off your body. They make you bigger up top and a little thinner. So they proportion you out a little better.” The first “Blue Collar Comedy” stand-up film was shot in Phoenix during the middle of the summer. The sleeveless trademark came about due to necessity. “I wore red flannel with no sleeves because it was hot. No particular reason... not because I was trying to make a fashion statement or whatever. But then when that movie got really popular, people knew me as the guy with no sleeves,” Whitney says. See Larry the Cable Guy in all of his sleeveless glory at his upcoming show at Chandler Center for the Arts. Try to keep your scars in your pants, ladies.

Pratt

SMASH! Local radio’s most controversial character makes friends with the enemy—The Internet Christina Caldwell » The Entertainer!

D

ave Pratt has been local radio’s most controversial character over the last 30 years, but you wouldn’t know that just standing in a room with him. The “Morning Mayor” is, appropriately, an entertainer. He has his fair share of wise cracks and music trivia to dole out to anyone who will listen. He’s not out to offend, but he’s not exactly holding back either. Not holding back is kind of what gave him the “controversial” label in the first place. Call him a shock jock, but Pratt is far from it in the flesh. As we shot this month’s cover—our first cover—his wife of 26 years, Paula, filmed a video of Pratt smashing radio equipment for his four kids. “Remember, honey, what I said if you started dating at an early age?” Pratt says into the camera for his daughter. “This is practice.” He lowers the sledgehammer, laying the radio to its final resting place— scattered across the floor. As downloadable music, Internet radio and podcasts slowly creep into terrestrial radio’s territory—and advertising dollars—the airwaves are facing a slow death. Hired and fired at some of the Valley’s most popular radio stations, including a 20-year stint at 98 KUPD, Pratt later found a home on country’s KMLE until he was replaced by Tim and Willy in 2008. After that, Pratt grew tired of being a radio nomad. He left for his new “home base.”

In 2011 he launched DavePrattLive. com, where he broadcasted his show live at 8 a.m. each weekday. That URL will still take you to Pratt’s show, but that little idea has expanded into something big since. Pratt turned terrestrial radio’s biggest nemesis into his best friend, continuing to broadcast Dave Pratt Live weekdays on the Doublewide Network—an Internet network he created with hundreds of niche, local and nationally-based radio shows and covering a variety of niche topics, from real estate to religion. Familiar Valley mainstays like Mark Lewis, longtime Channel 12 anchor, Mark Asher, former sports radio host on KTAR and beginning this month, former

KFYI morning anchor Bruce Jacobs will find a home at Doublewide. You might sense a running theme here. Some of Phoenix’s favorite names are recognizing the trend and making their way to Internet radio. Staying far away from radio towers these days, Pratt calls two floors of office space at Scottsdale’s Camelback Tower Doublewide’s home. The Entertainer!: How would you say the Doublewide Network is different from terrestrial radio, besides that you’re online and not on traditional airwaves? Pratt: Old school radio is limited by bulky towers, clunky transmitters and signals full of static when they get just a few miles out of reach. Old school radio is, well, old. Believe me, I was blessed by a career in old school radio, but I was also blessed by

THE ENTERTAINER! MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014

learning to type on a typewriter. Technology moves forward. I find it desperate and humorous how old school radio stations just regurgitate the same old content from their radio stations onto a mobile app or onto their old websites. Bad food is bad food. Listeners are smart. Listeners deserve better. Listeners deserve original digital content delivered with up-to-date, toplevel distribution. As old school radio continues to downsize and cut costs by getting rid of their best talent, their content is getting worse and worse. It is suicide from within. Old school radio is now being hosted mostly by beginners and by those willing to work for extremely low pay. Meanwhile, the better radio talent is gradually moving to new media distributors, such as Doublewide. What’s the key to creating a show people actually want to listen to instead of just listening passively, the way they would with traditional radio? Niche programming is very popular in new media, where the host can focus on a specialty and on a specific item of interest, a unique category. Niche programming attracts a very loyal audience who will passionately follow a host, resulting in much greater impact for advertisers at a much lower price. This is absolutely killing old school radio, which remains afraid to take any chances, and therefore remaining boring, predictable and homogenized. KDKB announced another format change from classic rock to alternative recently. Local stations seem to be in constant flux. What sets Doublewide and Dave Pratt Live apart from that? Radio is not really needed anymore for music. That time has passed. Music radio is mostly old, boring and dead. Music fans now get their music in a million different ways or at the click of their mouse. If our network plays music, it is either to accent a story we are telling or for an entertaining and relevant reason, or simply to give us a quick blast of energy or a quick break. You’ve no doubt been a controversial figure in Valley media over the last few decades. Facebook groups like “Dave Pratt Ruined 103.9” kind of cement that. That has to be hard to take. How do you deal with the negativity that comes your way? Those silly Facebook pages are started by radio geeks and competitors who are afraid to use their own names. Lots of

bitter radio people are around who have never achieved success so they drown in their own sorrow by taking shots from the bushes at others. Junior high stuff. 103.9 The Edge was already dead for well over a decade, and the management had already committed to killing the station before I even entered the picture. They had already decided to take The Edge off the air. The Edge management brought me in as a “Hail Mary” and then left me hanging for five months while they delivered the final lethal injection to the format. Total ineptitude. I was literally left sitting there, sleeping with my head on the counter for five months. Only our sense of humor guided my crew through that mess. Upon entering the 103.9 graveyard, it was obvious why that station had constantly scraped the bottom of the ratings. Look, if you come across a train that has already wrecked, all you can do is help carry away the carnage. We couldn’t wait to get out of there. Shortly thereafter, that same station had to combine signals with another station just to stay afloat. It is still the same. Sad on every level. You’re known to stress the importance of local living and business. What is it about the Valley that you love so much? Wow. I could literally write a novel about why I love Arizona so much. It is home. Elko, Nevada will always be my hometown, but Arizona will always be my home. Other than nine years growing up in Northern Nevada, my entire life has been spent in Arizona. Even during those nine years, much of my summers were spent with my father in Arizona. I will never leave. I met my wife here. I was married here. All four of my kids were born here, my mom is here, my father is buried here, and I will be buried here. I bleed Arizona and I am proud to wave the Arizona flag at every opportunity. This is why I am so proud of Doublewide! It is an Arizona-based company with a growing worldwide footprint. What was it that drew you to radio as a teen? What draws you to broadcasting now? Good question. I have never really been able to come up with an answer. I just know that it is all I have ever wanted to do. Radio has always been my one and only career dream. It still is! My dream is the same. Only technology has changed, making it even better. Now my dream is worldwide!

Catch Dave Pratt with former Diamondback Luis Gonzalez at the Arizona State Fair on October 25, where he will present Dave Pratt’s 1980 Something Concert featuring John Waite, Berlin and Tom Keifer of Cinderella. For more information, visit doublewidenetwork.com or azstatefair.com.

earing a “Jaws” T-shirt, tattered jeans, denim jacket and well-worn sunglasses, Rob Zombie retreats to an air-conditioned trailer near his trio of haunted houses and mazes inside Scottsdale’s WestWorld. He realizes that Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare is sweltering, but, before the attractions opened to the public, Zombie went through them to see first-hand if it’s up to snuff. “I just got here today,” he says on September 18, one day before the haunt’s grand opening and concert. “I’m seeing everything in person for the first time. So far it’s better than I thought it would be.

There’s all kinds of different things. It’s so much more elaborate than last year.” Rob Zombie’s Great American Nightmare is a mélange of horrors, all inspired by his films. Fans will take the “sensory-deprived journey” through The Lords of Salem in Total Black Out, before visiting the intense debut of Captain Spaulding’s Clown School in 3-D and The Devil’s Rejects. Zombie admits that even he’s a little leery about The Lords of Salem in Total Black Out, a maze that requires visitors wear bags over their heads. “That was Steve’s idea,” he says with

a laugh about Arizona-bred co-producer Steve Kopelman. Last year, when Great American Nightmare made its debut, Kopelman told Zombie that fans were going to “love it.” “He’s right. People are loving it,” he says. “To me it sounds horrible. My wife is like, ‘I am not putting a bag over my head.’ But people are loving it. It’s so weird.” Zombie’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie, has appeared in his films. Meanwhile, Kopelman has his own rationalization. “Because it is a Rob Zombie event, it’s gotta be far superior than anything else in the marketplace,” he says, adding that these attractions are more than “people just jumping out at you.” “The challenge is trying to make it as true to the movie as possible. We kind of look at these attractions as ‘immersive

theater.’ Rather than watching the movie, you’re in the movie.” Last year’s event inspired Zombie’s latest project, the movie “31.” A crowdfunding campaign for which the film was underway as of press time. “I came up with this idea for a really simple film: Let’s make a movie of people being abducted on Halloween. I realize that’s the one day of the year the facts say that most people go missing for whatever reason. That’s kind of a scary thought.” In “31,” five people are randomly abducted and taken to a secluded location. The quintet is forced to fight for

their lives for 12 hours until the night of Halloween is over. “If they’re alive, they’re set free,” says Zombie, who will wrap up production of his new album in October. “If they’re not, they’re not, obviously. That was sort of inspired by this event. When you go through these mazes you really feel like— even though you know it’s fake—they’re so intense you feel like you’re actually in danger for your lives. My wife won’t even go through them, even though half the characters are dressed up as her from the films. She’s like, ‘No way am I going in.’ She doesn’t dig it. It’s pretty funny.”

CARNIVAL OF ILLUSION

AN EVENING OF OLD WORLD MAGIC CARNIVAL OF ILLUSION

Randy Montgomery The Entertainer!

A

n evening with Sarlot and Eyed from Carnival of Illusion feels like a magical trip around the world. It’s not the whizz, bang, boom that Vegas offers—it’s far more authentic than that. Growing up in Los Angeles, Roland Sarlot often saw legendary magicians at the world-famous Magic Castle and was amazed. After graduating school and moving to Tucson, Sarlot decided to leave the field of astronomical instrument design behind to pursue magic. Susan Eyed grew up in the Midwest and longed to be elsewhere. She received a degree in International Studies and traveled the world. She was profoundly influenced by the culture of the counties visited, which led to the opening of her own dance studio in Arizona. The pair teamed up in 2002 to create Dance of Illusion—a large stage show of magic and dance built on both of their talents and experience being overseas.

In Carnival of Illusion, the duo remains true to their international backgrounds while combining their personal passions to create a one-of-a-kind experience. “Our boutique theater has grown so much in the last five seasons. We are excited to enter our sixth year,” Sarlot says. If you are expecting large-scale Vegas-style theatrics and special effects, look elsewhere. If you are looking for an entertaining evening of Vaudevilleinspired illusion presented by two awardwinning entertainers that pour their heart and soul into every performance, then step right up! Get ready to laugh and celebrate an intimate, magical night out.

Carnival of Illusion, Phoenix Season In 2009, the decision was made to take the show to an intimate setting. Inspiration was based on the early 1900’s—the golden era of magic, where the upper crust would be entertained in the parlors of the highest echelons of society.

Carnival of Illusion, a Vaudevilleinspired illusion show, played to 62 soldout audiences in its first season. “What began as a concept of an intimate illusion show, has turned into a weekly sold-out attraction,” says Eyed, one of the few female magicians in the world.

INSIDE THE MOVIE:

THE GUEST

Stan Robinson » The Entertainer!

T

he Guest” tells the eerie tale of a soldier returning from the Iraq war, who introduces himself to the Peterson family. While he claims to be a friend of their son who died in combat, they soon find out he’s probably anything but. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence. Director Adam Wingard and screenplay writer Simon Barrett share this insight about bringing their story to the big screen. Wingard: Fortunately we found ourselves in a very good position after our last film where we developed a good relationship with our producers Keith Calder and Jessica Wu. The experience of working with them was great. They loved working with us and after that, they pretty much dedicated themselves to doing our next movie. What was truly great about them was that they had their own capital so there wasn’t any middle man, or the whole studio system where you have to basically pitch over and over to a group of people to get a movie going! It was just a straight shot with these guys.

Barrett: I actually came up with the script idea for “The Guest” back in 2007 when we were still very much at a time when the Iraq war was still on everyone’s minds and Hollywood was trying to respond to that. My idea was kind of bare bones of what “The Guest” is now. But I stopped writing around the age of 20 or 30 because I was not enjoying it and it felt kind of preachy and at that time, I wasn’t aware of much—I was younger and a much worse writer and filmmaker, but I was aware that there was nothing more lame than someone who hasn’t served in the military trying to explain that experience ... we really wanted to be as accurate as we could. But at the end of the day, we were guessing. Wingard: OK, I’ll pitch you on “The Guest.” It’s a hard movie to explain, [but] here goes: It’s a thriller about a family who lost their son overseas in combat and a year after he died, a stranger shows up saying that he had promised to check in on them and he sets about to trying to fix their lives in all these increasingly violent ways, and becomes both the hero and the villain!

LEGENDS OF COUNTRY KEEPS THE GREATS ALIVE

S

tarted by Larry King in 1988 in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the Legends of Country Music show is meant to appeal traditional country music to future generations while also keeping alive the older generations’ memories of these songs. The show will bring Nashville to Scottsdale on October 19 and is one country music fans won’t want to miss. As you enjoy a dinner and cocktails, the Legendary Band will perform over 40 of the most recognizable classics from country favorites such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Loretta Lynn, Reba, Chet Atkins and many more. Over 20 legends will be covered in the show. Before the musician begins playing a medley of each star’s greatest hits, they will introduce the legend with trivia about the artist or songs and information about how Arizona has played a vital part in the history of country music. Can’t fight the feeling to sing along? Don’t worry. It’s encouraged as the musicians don’t impersonate the legends—they perform each hit as close to the original as possible. In addition, expect a special salute to the military, as founder Larry King has included a special, revised version of “The Ragged Ole Flag in recognition of veterans at every show. Truly talented and dedicated to their craft, the Legendary Band is made up of: Jay Dee Hoag, band leader and lead guitar; Ed Cini, drums; Mike Miller, bass guitar and featured singer; Doug Wright, rhythm guitar and featured singer; Maynard Mast, steel guitar and banjo; Tony Cook, fiddle and harmony singer; Kirsten Millsap,

featured singer; Rachel Ann Vetter, featured singer; and Linda Sue Baker, piano and back-up singer. Don’t miss out on this truly unique and wonderful night filled with toe-tapping, crooning along and lots of memories as these talented musicians bring to life these truly exceptional legends.

PRONTO BIANCO!

Alright, so here’s the scoop. We all know and love Chris Bianco’s world-famous pizza, right? (Heck, even Oprah called it her favorite!) But the wait time at Pizzeria Bianco Downtown gets a bit crazy. (Who has three hours to wait for pizza!?) Did you know that Bianco serves all of our favorite pies at his Central Phoenix location? And the best part? There’s rarely a wait time. Next time you’re craving the Wiseguy, Sonny Boy or Rosa, head to 20th Street and Camelback Road and you’ll get it as quickly as those beautiful, wood-burning ovens can manage.

BONUS TIP: Follow Bianco on Instagram for sneak peeks into weekly specials, personal recipes and plenty of photos that’ll make your mouth water at @pizzeriabianco

DUELING DINERS: EVO

En garde! Our dueling diners love each other when they’re not reviewing restaurants, but when the meal comes, their flaws are totally game Christina Caldwell and Andrew Axelrod » The Entertainer!

CHRISTINA’S ACCOUNT

ANDREW’S ACCOUNT

When Andrew and I sat down for a meal at EVO in Old Town Scottsdale, making our way to their dim-but-warm dining room that was lit by candlelight, I knew what kind of night it was gonna be. We were going to get it on. Ack, not that way. We had already set up the premise for our first Dueling Diners review. It was an open sphere to make fun of each other’s eating habits, and I already knew which of mine would be on the table. When we took a look at the appetizers, I was fully aware which one would please Andrew’s basic, childlike taste buds. A carb-and-meat man through and through, my lovely boyfriend went straight for the polpettina, which is a fancy word for EVO’s homemade meatballs with garlic bread and tomato sauce. I ordered the bruschetta of the day, which included baby kale, pork, marinated peppers and more. When you think of kale you think bitter, and well, gross, but the lightly sautéed EVO version was mild. Paired with the buttery, melt-in-your mouth pork, this bruschetta was heaven. But I have to hand it to Andrew. The unbelievably tender meatballs didn’t require a single chew, were flavored to perfection while the tomato sauce that accompanied it was beyond flavorful. Andy wins this round, except not in table manners. I accidentally dropped a glob of tomato sauce on the table and placed it back on the plate when we were—I thought—done. Instead, Andrew popped that dirty last morsel right into his mouth, despite my warning. I often wonder if we’re really that different from wild animals. I’m also around Andrew often, so take that as you may. When it came to entrees, I was the clear winner, but Andrew’s fettuccini alfredo put up a good fight. Marinated chicken added a ton of moisture to the traditionally dry, heavy dish. But this fettuccini wasn’t thick with a pasty sauce at all. In fact, I’d liken it more to a thick broth, packed with yummy coating on every bite. I have expensive taste, so I ordered the surf and turf with braised pork temple, diver scallops, polenta and baby corn. The plate was arranged like something you’d see on the Food Network, except instead of just eating with my eyes, I got to actually, well… eat! Every little bit was a burst of flavor, from the perfectly seared scallops to the fall-apart pork, from the sweet baby corn to the complex polenta. This was the sort of “small” portion your sports bar diner might make fun of, but I left fully—and I mean fully—satisfied. That doesn’t mean I didn’t have room for dessert, though. The chocolate torte with marshmallow cream, orange and almond was the perfect end to our meal. While the frozen raspberries shocked me, the dense, lightly salted chocolate torte was expertly combined with two exotic sauces that elevated it from your runof-the-mill chocolate dish.

We were sat just underneath a dangling chandelier among the modern but romantic décor. As I looked into Christina’s eyes from across the table, I had only one thing on my mind. Meatballs. To be fair, when I am not actively thinking about something the default thought in my mind is usually one of meatballs—deliciously seasoned balls of meat or spherical ground wads of animal. Lucky for me, EVO was ready to satisfy. Having already decided my appetizer, I grew impatient as I watched Christina’s meatballs—I mean eyes—darting across the menu. She decided on the pork and kale brushetta like a total amateur. “She must have missed the meatballs,” I thought to myself. Now I may not have the most dialed-in palate, but score one for ‘ol Andrew in the appetizer round. The bruschetta was a delicious hodgepodge of pork, peppers and kale. Each new flavor created a very layered and well-thought-out dish. However, the meatballs were meatballs. The polpettina, as EVO calls them, were so good that I considered driving to my mother’s house and forbidding her from ever making her meatball recipe again, as they would be an insult to the higher plane of existence that is EVO’s polpettina. “Stop crying,” I’d say as I stuffed a few of EVOs meatballs into her mouth. And then she, too, would understand. Next came our entrées. I ordered the fettuccini alfredo, which is basically a trick to make everyone around you think you are a grownup while still getting to eat mac and cheese. I’ve had more than a few fettucini alfredos in my time, and in my experience, when you order it with chicken, that usually means they’re going to drop some sad, dry, lifeless grilled or blackened white meat on top of the plate and call it day. In this case, the protein was not an afterthought. The chicken was moist, flavorful and even light. I will give the edge to Christina on entrée choices. Her selection of pork and scallop surf and turf was so good that she uncontrollably consumed it, leaving an enormous mess on her side of the table. Then again, that is always how she eats. I often say that a meal with Christina isn’t over until there’s more food in her hair than on the plate. In this case, I almost went food-in-hair nuts over her dish too. The braised pork was fantastic, tender and sweet. Finally we agreed to complete the meal with the marshmallow chocolate torte. I am certain Christina saw the item on the menu and thought, “I’ll bet the raspberry will play great with the richness of the chocolate.” I saw the item on the menu and thought, “Oh dang, I’m about to eat some s’mores.” Now that’s not a very accurate description of the dish, but let’s be fair to me, I’m bad at this reviewing thing.

CRAFT BEER

ON FIRE IN ARIZONA Chuck Noll » The Entertainer!

H

ear that hiss? That’s us cracking open the craft beer section of The Entertainer! The Craftmaster, as we call it, will be an amalgam of beer information—local, national and international. Look for articles on events, new beers, local favorites and more. Arizona beer culture has taken so many strides in the past few years and we intend to keep pace with all of the breweries that grace our streets. Whether you’re interest is in the local breweries that are opening doors what seems to be weekly, the amazing world of craft beer throughout the United States, or even if you are a fan of Belgian, German and other higherend imports, you will find your hoppy information here. Speaking of local Arizona breweries, we have some amazing ones you should check out now that the weather is cooling down. With the recent opening of Mother

Bunch in Phoenix, the total stands at 54. However, there are another nine licences currently pending for breweries in the area. All of these breweries are working hard at making outstanding beer and satisfying the taste buds of consumers.

testament to the popularity of the beer. Some tasting rooms, like Huss Brewing in Tempe, supplement their beers with guest taps. And while the Huss beers are outstanding and should always be your first choice at the brewery,

Each of these breweries have made their relatively small size an advantage, showing incredible innovation and getting people interested in beer culture. Bear in mind, though, that these are mostly very small breweries and production is very limited. Sometimes you may see six handles on tap in their tasting room, and the next day there may only be three. That’s OK—it’s just a

there is something pretty cool about seeing New Belgium La Folie on tap right next to its inspiration, Rodenbach. Many of these smaller breweries are already capturing the imagination of the local beer community. Besides

Huss, breweries like Fate Brewing in Scottsdale, Arizona Wilderness Brewing Co. in Gilbert and Dragoon Brewing in Tucson are getting people excited about everything beer can be. Each of these breweries have made their relatively small size an advantage, showing incredible innovation and getting people interested in beer culture. While Fate and Dragoon tend to let their beer speak for themselves, the folks at Arizona Wilderness, led by The Beards, as they are known, have hit their stride in both the beer quality and marketing arenas. Look for these guys at festivals and around town, serving up great beer with a healthy dose of eccentricity—the good kind. Craft beer in Arizona is on fire. Whether your preference is a local wheat beer, or an IPA from Kalamazoo, Michigan, or wonderful pale ale from San Diego, or even an amazing sour from Belgium, we intend to be your source for information on everything beer. Cheers!

A medium-bodied ale with amber color and a complex finish, this beer is Grand Canyon’s pride and joy at 5% ABV.

Huss Brewing Scottsdale Blonde

Scottsdale Blonde Kölsch is brewed in the style of the German Kölsch from Cologne, Germany, but has a slightly sweeter malt finish than its German counterpart. It is straw yellow with a nice, clean aroma and a perfectly white head at 4.75% ABV.

THE ENTERTAINER! MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2014

BEERTENDERS Bartenders who really know their beer JIM LOLLI, owner and head beer guy at The Hungry Monk in Chandler The Hungry Monk bartender Tiffinie Carpenter with proprietor and “head beer guy,” Jim Lolli.

Three Cheers for

NEW BEERS

Poor Chuck Noll. He taste tests new beers on the market so you don’t have to. Thanks for your sacrifice, Chuck!

OLD CHUB NITRO SCOTCH ALE Oskar Blues Brewery, Colorado Breanne DeMore » The Entertainer! With a title like “head beer guy,” you know he has to be good. We stopped by Chandler beer haven The Hungry Monk to chat with Jim Lolli, owner and resident beer afficianado, about his beer history, his love of craft and his muchadored taproom and eatery. The Entertainer!: How did you get started and begin to learn about beer? Lolli: I was living back in Michigan and was your typical big name beer guy. I was able to go to my first beer festival and I never went back. It was eye-opening. I was in the corporate world and after years of that, I was sick of it. So I turned to my wife and told her, “I want to play with beer for the rest of my life.”

What makes craft beer so special? The sheer variety and wide range of ingredients is amazing. Also, the insane coolness of the craft beer crowd is one of my favorite parts. But overall, it’s the experience. Craft beer is always chasing a sensory experience equivalent to the culinary experience. Why is The Hungry Monk a great place to enjoy craft beer? Our motto is that it’s where ‘great food, craft beer and sports collide.’ We focus on the experience. We have insanely good customers and a staff that sticks around. Our beer menu changes every single day and we have great relationships with breweries, so we’re able to get a wide variety.

It’s just like the Old Chub signature brew... but on NITRO! A huge celebration of rich malts and smoked grains creates a smooth finishing character for the herculean size of this Scotch Ale (6.9% A.B.V./30 IBU). The first American craft nitro beer in a can, Old Chub Nitro Scotch Ale takes the big, bold original favorite and adds the creamy, velvety mouthfeel that makes this local Colorado nitro unique.

BARTOONS by Sean Hoy

Brew Truths On his African Safari, President Theodore Roosevelt brought with him more than 500 gallons of beer. Growlers may be a popular trend with local breweries, but they actually have quite the history. Beer wasn’t bottled until the 1850s, so customers would visit their local taverns with “special buckets” and have it filled to take home.

HUSS BREWING CO. The brainchild of husband and wife team Jeff and Leah Huss, Huss Brewing Co. opened its doors in August 2013 in the spot that once housed Rio Salado Brewing Co. Jeff is the beer man as a Siebel Institute graduate and the former Head Brewer for BJ’s Brewery in Chandler. Leah is the culinary master as a graduate of Scottsdale Culinary Institute and managing partner at Papago Brewing Co. in Scottsdale. The taproom at Huss is a warm cozy space with mismatched tables and chairs and 20 taps. They currently have seven of their own beers on tap, while the other taps feature some of the best beers available in Arizona, plus cider and wine. Huss Brewing will can their beers, including seasonals, come early 2015. The focus of the Huss portfolio is well-made American craft ales and lagers with a touch of German influence. Part of Jeff’s brewing education took place at the Doemens Academy in Munich, which had an impact on his choice of beers. They are currently producing an American Pale Ale, an American India Pale Ale, a German-style Kölsch, a German-style Schwartz and a spiced porter. Huss Brewing Co., 1520 W. SANTAN BREWING COMPANY Under the leadership of founder and brewmaster, Anthony Canecchia, SanTan has established a strong reputation as one of Arizona’s favorite craft breweries. Open since 2007, SanTan features a friendly neighborhood brewpub in Downtown Chandler, which has quickly become one of the top local food and beer destinations in the Phoenix Metro area. All SanTan Brewing Company craft beers are Southwestern Style Ales. The brews are fermented to completion and carbonated higher than traditional American beers for a more effervescent, crisp and refreshing hand-crafted beer—perfect for quenching your thirst in the hot Arizona sun. In 2009, SanTan Brewing began distributing their Southwestern Style Ales throughout the state of Arizona, operating with a mission to pair craft beer with craft food that would inspire great conversation and good times. 2014 marks the beginning of taking this journey throughout the Southwest and California. In 1984, Lofgren joined Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band with whom he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Oh! And all the while, Lofgren has put out 20 of his own solo albums. Witness his unwavering talent firsthand. Talking Stick Resort, 9800 E. Forming the band The Melody Makers with three of his siblings when they were much younger, Ziggy put out a few albums with them before going out on his own. Today, Ziggy has five Grammy Awards under his belt, along with a children’s album and two charities, Unlimited Resources Giving Enlightenment and Little Kids Rock, both of which work to help children flourish.

Started by two Georgetown graduates in the early ‘90s, Vertical Horizon’s big break came in 1998 when the four-man group signed with RCA Records. Soon after, the band put out their third album and hit it big. The breakout single “Everything You Want” rocked the airways in 2000, becoming one of the most played songs of the year. They followed that hit with singles “You’re a God” and “Best I Ever Had (Grey Sky Morning)” to cement themselves in the new millennium’s musical history. ADVICE ON LIFE FROM

LOUIE

THE GARBAGE MAN! “YOUR GARBAGE IS MY BUSINESS.” Dear Louie, My girlfriend has been spending less and less time with me. We used to see each other five times a week. Now, it’s more like two times a week and sometimes not even Friday or Saturday. She says she has been working really hard at her job, but I’m getting suspicious. Should I trust her or should I investigate and find out what she’s doing when she’s not with me? Signed, Timid Columbo

Dear TC, You got two options here, pal. Be glad youse getting’ two nights and not getting dumped all together, because like it or not, the dump is just ahead and on the left. Or you can play detective, find out she’s got something better on the side, and dump her, in which case the dump is just ahead on the right. Either way, there’s a room waitin’ for you at the Heartbreak Hotel. Sorry. Since you got a no-win deal here, I suggest you go bowlin’ with your buddies on the off nights. Play poker, fix up your car, or better yet, look in the freakin’ mirror and try to figure out why your gal would want to be without a screamin’ hunk of man such as yourself. In other words, get a life! You’re not a loser if she don’t want you no more. You’re a loser for worrying about it and gettin’ all stressed out. My gut tells me that as soon as your life starts revolving around things that make living fun, she’ll come back, or you’ll find someone else who’s more likely to be your slice of heavenly pie. I got guys writin’ me who can’t figure out how to get one night away from their possessive women. You’ve got five nights and think it’s a problem. Go freakin’ figure…

ASU’S D.J. FOSTER

KEEPS IT HUMBLE

Mike Tulumello » The Entertainer!

D

.J. Foster is one of the most heralded recruits ever to sign with ASU football, having been a USA Today first-team All American selection when he was a doeverything star at Scottsdale Saguaro High School. Now he is one of the leaders of the nationally ranked Sun Devil football team—a dynamic player who can both run the ball and catch passes.

The Entertainer!: It was a big deal for ASU to get you to come here. Now that you’ve been here for a couple of years, what do you think? Is it what you expected? D.J. Foster: I’m 100 percent happy with my decision. Coming here, I knew I would have a chance to play early. The people I’ve met, the coaching I’ve got here, and the community, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Surely you were well prepared. But is there anything about big-time college football that surprised you? Just how many people are really involved. How many people truly care about their college football team all across the country. And the Sun Devil community, it’s amazing to me how many people are paying attention, how much support they give. It’s definitely a blessing. What are you majoring in? Communications. I’m kind of still shopping around, figuring out what I want to do. When it’s all said and done, I want to be an entrepreneur type, own my business. Or work in sports broadcasting. Something along those lines. Do you think you’ll play all four years? Or will the NFL come calling a year early? I really don’t think about it too much. I’ve been getting asked that a lot. At the end of the day, you can’t control that. As long as you take care of business in what’s in front of you, everything else will fall into place. I don’t put too much thought into that. I have a long season ahead of me.

When you were a senior at Saguaro, they had a freshman named Christian Kirk. Now he’s a senior. Are you involved in any recruiting or are you steering him here? He’s a friend of mine. At the end of the day, that’s all he is. It’s tough to define that line, between a friend, and I’m also here trying to push him one way. He knows how I feel. He knows I would love for him to come here. But the most important thing I can do for him is be a friend and be a big brother to him. No matter where he goes, I’m going to support him. Of course, I’d love for him to come here. But at the end of the day, I just want him to be happy. Coach Graham is really talking you guys up this season. Are you as good as you’re cracked up to be? I think we are a very good team. But I try to tell my teammates, “Don’t listen to all that stuff. Don’t even worry about that.” We’ve always had our backs against the wall. I feel year in and year out, we have a little chip on our shoulder. I’d rather play like that. I’d rather be the underdog, third in the Pac-12 South. I like that. Preseason means absolutely nothing. It’s just a prediction. That’s all it is. I like to prove people wrong. What would it take for this team to run the table, other than getting good luck here and there? To be honest, our second string. I think that’s huge. In a long season, our two-deep guys have to be paying attention. It’s going to somebody who hasn’t been playing much. It’s going to come down to our second-team guys, our third-team guys to make a play and not lose a step. It’s very important. Are there any new players that those of us on the outside don’t know about, that you know about, that we should be looking for? Our running back group. Demario Richard has come in, right when camp started, and he’s made a tremendous effort. I think he’ll be a great running back in this program. And there are guys who have been here, like (receiver) Gary Chambers, who have progressed and matured so much since I’ve been here. Those are guys to watch coming up.

NCAA tournament team and were ranked No. 4 in the Pac-12 preseason poll. Wells Fargo Arena, 634 E. Veterans Way, Tempe, 480.727.0000, thesundevils.com, 7 p.m., $8 adults, $6 kids

Arizona Cardinals vs. Washington Redskins OCTOBER 12 The Cardinals will host perenniallystruggling Washington in a game that’s a virtual must-win if the Cards have any shot at the playoffs. Washington features the versatile quarterback Robert Griffin, who is trying to bounce back from his disappointing performance last year. But the team generally offers little defensive resistance, which the Cardinals’ upgraded offense should be able to exploit. As long as quarterback Carson Palmer avoids multiple turnovers, the Cardinals should be able to bring this one home. University of Phoenix Stadium, 1 Cardinals Drive, Glendale, 602.379.0102, azcardinals. com, 1:25 p.m., $40-$598

ASU Football vs. Stanford OCTOBER 18 Under coach Todd Graham, the Sun Devil football team has been able to climb many mountains. But the Devils have been unable to climb even a few steps uphill when they’ve played Stanford in the past. The Cardinals crushed them twice last season, including in the Pac-12 championship game in Tempe. A win in this game would be a landmark feat for the Devils and would result in a high national ranking. Sun Devil Stadium, 500 E. Veterans Way, Tempe, 480.965.2381, thesundevils.com, kickoff time TBA, $50-$325

Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers OCTOBER 29 It figures that the Suns will open their 2014-15 season against their evil nemesis, the Los Angeles Lakers. Might as well get fans’ blood boiling from the get go. The Lakers are still built around Kobe Bryant, who is trying to become the NBA’s all-time scoring leader, but not much else. US Airways Center, 201 E. Jefferson Street, Phoenix, 602.379.7824, nba.com/suns, 7 p.m., $36-$330

Niccole Radhe is a Tucson resident who has been exploring Arizona for over 10 years, finding the best outdoor recreation and encouraging active and adventurous lifestyles. THIS MONTH’S HIKE: King Canyon Trail in Saguaro National Park (West) Difficulty rating: Moderate 6.5 miles round trip Tucson’s Saguaro National Park is on the west side of T-town, stretching from King Canyon Trail up to the summit of Wassan Peak. This trek is one of the best in the Tucson Mountains. It offers unforgettable 360 degree desert and city views and is a great workout. I highly recommend this trek for anyone who wants to really experience the essence of

the desert and appreciate this place we call home. This entire trail is comprised of rocky switchbacks that get increasingly steeper as you hike to the top. With staggeringly tall saguaros, the views here cannot be matched by any other in the Tucson Mountains. King Canyon is usually packed with outdoor enthusiasts during the fall, winter and spring seasons because the weather is perfect for desert trekking. This trail takes anywhere from three to five hours out-and-back with almost 2,000 feet of elevation gain. With the busy holiday season drawing closer, it is more important than ever to get close to nature to relax and rejuvenate. Get out and take a trek this fall season! WHACK ZOMBIES AT

KNOTT’S SCARY FARM

Randy Montgomery The Entertainer!

E

very year around this time, something sinister happens at Knott’s Berry Farm. The fog rolls in, evil creatures fill the midways and darkness lurks around every corner. Knott’s Scary Farm, the park’s annual Halloween event has become a tradition for willing victims looking to get the daylights scared out of them. What began as a simple event in 1973 has turned into the world’s first, largest and most creative scary theme

park. Now in its 42nd year, Knott’s Scary Farm features 160 acres of terror. The park offers eleven haunted attractions, four scare zones, two stage shows and 1,000 live monsters terrorizing guests. What makes Knott’s special is the creative team tasked to come up with original ideas every year. For 2014, designer Brooke Walters invites brave souls to enter her creation called “Voodoo.” The indoor attraction will force you to choose a path through a swamp. Daniel Miller introduces a sadistic “Tooth Fairy,” a terrifying experience sure to incite nightmares.

An up-charge maze called “Trapped: Lock and Key” promises to prey on your every fear, as small groups are led through. Unlock even more terror and purchase a “Skeleton Key.” This pass allows entrance to secret rooms in select mazes. Enter the world of Edgar Allan Poe in “Forevermore,” and see what an evil puppet has in store inside “Pinocchio Unstrung.” Houdini’s ghost visits “Black Magic.” “The Gunslingers Grave” offers a chilling view of the Old West. Take a ride on the newly restored Calico Mine Ride and see what the Green Witch has done inside. Plus, much more! The Hanging is a stunt show filled with pop culture references and a famous celebrity hanging. Elvira: Mistress of the Dark returns to the 1,800 seat Ghoul Time Theatre along with dance group Academy of Villains (from Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance”) for a 30 minute production called “Elvira’s Big Top.” New this year is “Special Ops: Infected.” Guests will be led through six-acres of mountainous terrain in the Camp Snoopy section of the park in groups of 12, led by a squad leader and armed with laser-style guns. Your mission: fend off zombies, complete tasks and do not become infected. This breakthrough, interactive experience will be as terrifying as it is challenging. In addition, all of Knott’s worldfamous roller coasters are open, along with a majority of their other attractions. The event is recommended for guests 13 and older. For the little ones, Knott’s offers Camp Spooky during normal park hours on the weekend. Children can mingle with Snoopy and his Peanuts pals for family-friendly Halloween fun.

Live entertainment, costume contests, trick-or-treat trail, Halloween LEGO models and fireworks!

PHOENIX FASHION WEEK

IS THE VALLEY THE NEXT FASHION CAPITAL? Lynette Carrington The Entertainer!

W

ith a jeans and T-shirt mentality, Phoenix isn’t exactly what most people would consider a city at the height of fashion. But Phoenix Fashion Week is working against that stereotype, showcasing designs from Arizona’s hottest emerging and established designers. In its seventh year, Phoenix Fashion Week will get cameras flashing and tongues wagging when the 24 runway events dazzle audiences October 1 through 4 at Talking Stick Resort. “The caliber of designers in Arizona is probably the biggest news story right now… It tells us that the work we’ve been doing the past seven years of trying to push Arizona fashion forward is actually working now,” says Brian Hill, executive director of Phoenix Fashion Week. And there are many local designers who put in the effort to make that push. Gilbert Designer Lillienne Langford designs under the name Lillienne Lang. Originally creating unique bridal designs under the label of Autumn Russell, she’s venturing into new territory this Fashion Week with a collection of women’s readyto-wear and evening gowns with her October 4 runway show. “It’s more upscale suits, pencil skirts and jackets,” Langford says. “I wanted to redefine the tailored look, because when you see women in the business world, you think of the classic comfortable blazer. I want to put a twist on it and make it edgier, feminine or just give it more character.” That doesn’t mean locals are skipping out on their T-shirt roots. State Forty Eight, a line named for Arizona’s numerical order in entering statehood, is a unique and casual fashion line founded by Chandler-based brothers Nicholas and Stephen Polando and friend Michael Spangenberg. “We are three different personalities with three different styles, but the inspiration was, for me, the passion for clothing… and I [wanted] to create

a clothing brand for many years,” Spangenberg says. “Stephen and I really started talking about it seriously and we knew we had a deep passion for Arizona, so that’s what we wanted it to be.” The sports-minded clothing line includes hats, T-shirts, crop tops, racerback tanks, polos, hoodies and other casual wear. Stephen Polando came up with the name and Nicholas Polando came on board with the design and artwork. To the designing trio, State Forty Eight represents everything wonderful about Arizona and they’re looking forward to Phoenix Fashion Week. “When I went to Phoenix Fashion Week a year ago, I knew this is where we needed to be,” Spangenberg says. “We’re most looking forward to seeing the outcome from it and we’re learning a lot during this process, too,” says Nicholas Polando. Fashionably Pink is a celebrity and breast cancer survivor fashion show that kicks off fashion week on October 1. Funds benefit local breast cancer charities throughout Phoenix including “Don’t be a Chump, Check for a Lump.” Schumacher European Limited Mercedes Benz in North Scottsdale is presenting Fashionably Pink and they will donate money to breast cancer charities for every car sold in October. “Fashion is about giving back and that’s what we’re about,” Hill says. For more information, visit phoenixfashionweek.com.

State Forty Eight is a casual, sporty clothing line from Nicholas and Stephen Polando and Michael Spangenberg that will be featured at Phoenix Fashion Week. Gilbert designer Lillienne Langford will be showcasing her new line, Lillienne Lang, which features women’s ready-to-wear clothing and gowns.

hillip Phillips was standing on the stage at Salt River Fields July 4th weekend when the monsoon suddenly became the headliner. “That was pretty nuts,” he says. “I have a picture of the dust coming up right before it hit the field. It’s a really cool picture. That’s something I won’t forget for sure.” Phillips, who was crowned “American Idol” champ in 2012, returns to the Valley to play the Celebrity Theatre on Sunday, December 7. The Georgia-born singer is supporting his latest album Behind the Light, which features the single “Raging Fire.” “I really love it,” he explained about the song, which debuted at No. 58 on the Billboard Hot 100 after selling 74,000

digital copies. “It’s fun to play live. We wrote that song pretty quickly. We had the idea then we went and started something else. I said, ‘Let’s go back to that.’ We wrote it in four to five days, if that, probably less. I’m so proud of that song.” “Raging Fire,” as well as his latest single, “Unpack Your Heart,” are a part of the set list each night, even though the 23-year-old likes to mix it up. “We play a different set every night,” he says. “We’re always adding and taking something away. But we’re just jamming and having fun with it.”

Sweet EMOTION Joe Perry unearths tales of Aerosmith and self in ‘Rocks’ Christina Fuoco-Karasinski The Entertainer!

A

erosmith guitarist Joe Perry is used to the rigors of gigging, but he’s unsure about the intensity of his forthcoming book tour, which comes to Tempe and Scottsdale this month. Perry is hitting bookstores and Guitar Center locations to push his autobiography “Rocks: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith,” which arrives in stores October 7.

“I’ve done some pretty crazy things with the band, like doing a gig in one place and jetting off to some other place,” says Perry, the co-founder of Aerosmith and songwriter alongside singer Steven Tyler. “But [touring with Aerosmith is] a little slower. We’re often waiting for equipment to show up. This is a whole new ballgame for me, pouring out my heart and soul like I did for this book. To be able to get out there and talk to people

about it—I’m really fascinated by the whole thing.” Perry spoke to The Entertainer! about “Rocks,” his love of Jack Kerouac and his ties to Arizona. The Entertainer!: Was writing the book a good experience or was it difficult? Perry: I think—no, I know—it was a lot more work than I expected, first off. I’m a big fan of the Jack Kerouac school of just

letting it flow, then moving on. I think there were some fun parts of reliving some of the good times. Then there was also the aspect of getting into some of the stuff, some of the decisions I made, or certain circumstances that I had to relive and really get into that wasn’t so much fun, frankly. It was tough emotionally. I think the overall experience was really amazing. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t want to go through it again.

Your bandmates have written books as well. How does this one differ? My book follows that traditional autobiographical format. Certainly there are going to be a lot of surprises in there for people. I didn’t want to write a sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll book. We kind of did that in “Walk This Way.” It’s been done so many times. It’s part of our story. I didn’t want to disregard that as part of the whole Aerosmith thing. I wanted to go deeper than that. That was the focus to get down to human nature. How have your shows been in Arizona in the past? It’s been a while since we played there. It’s been about six years, which is really a shame. It’s always been a great place for us to play. We really like it there. My mother lived in Sedona for 13 years. It’s always a great stop for us. We’d always make time to go up and visit her. That was back in the ‘90s and she has since moved back to the East, in New Hampshire, and she passed away last year. But yeah, Phoenix was always one of those stops that I look forward to. The fans have always been great there. Sedona is amazing. I know. You talk to people you live there and they go on—and I don’t blame them—about it being more and more commercialized. It was still kind of this undiscovered spiritual place. There was a lot of focus on that. Of course there are a lot more Pink Jeeps running around. It’s still an amazing place. When we do get a chance—it hasn’t been for a while—we [go] up there to visit, even though my mother isn’t there.

Have your bandmates read the book yet? Not yet. I really wanted to give it to them in a totally complete form. I just got the completed copies with the pictures and the cover, all the elements, the way it’s going to be on the bookshelf about a week ago. I wanted them to see it like that. I didn’t see the point in showing them the galleys when there was still editing going on.

Were you worried about revealing anything to the public in “Rocks”? Yeah. It’s not in my nature to open up certain parts of my personal life—my heart and soul, so to speak. That’s on the personal level. It is basically an autobiography about my life. Certainly Aerosmith fans will be looking to see more about the Aerosmith news, to see if there’s anything new in there—which I’m sure there will be. There’s the dynamic

between Steven and I. I actually got a question a couple days ago: “Is the band still together?” It just goes to show how far afield some of these stories can get or people’s perceptions can get. The fact that we’re still able to do it 42 years later and deal with all that ... I just wanted to try to get it as close to the truth of what I recall and taking responsibility for the good and the bad, whether it’s my own personal life or the band’s life.

What’s in the plans for Aerosmith? Everybody’s sitting around shaking off the last three years. It’s been a constant run since the start of the making of the last album. This is the first break we’ve had in over four years, I think, where we actually have six to eight months before we would normally tour. We’re talking about different options right now. But I think everybody’s just enjoying their time off. I’m just starting to realize I don’t have to get up and get on a plane again. We do have a private party, but that’s kind of like a one-off kind of thing. It’s one of those things we like doing, a low-pressure thing and it’s fun playing those kinds of shows. Actually, that’s when I’ll give the guys the book. I’m just trying to figure out when the best time is to give it to them.

THE NEW FAB FOUR

England’s Arctic Monkeys turn garage glam on new album Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

E

nglish garage rockers-goneglam Arctic Monkeys have long been popular overseas. They’ve played Wembley Arena, smashed debut album sales and made girls all over the world buckle at the knees. While they’ve scored a few hits in the U.S., Their latest record, 2013’s AM, catapulted the group into the realm of full-fledged American favorites, garnering radio play and critical acclaim. England’s new Fab Four miss the United States, so bassist Nick O’Malley couldn’t be any more thrilled that the band has returned to these shores. “We’re ready for the U.S.,” says O’Malley via telephone from England. “We’ve done a lot of Europe recently. We’re missing the U.S. a little. I really miss the bars. I think Americans do bars really well. Oh, and the food. And the friendliness. You do Mexican food well.” Heck yes, we do. Arctic Monkeys are touring on the heels of AM, a collection that NME—a

seminal U.K. music magazine—called perhaps the best album of the decade. Although O’Malley is flattered by the comment, he’s not quite sure that that’s true. “I don’t know about that,” he says with a laugh. “It’s nice to hear that, definitely. I’ve tried to avoid reading stuff like that and getting too into it. Whether it’s good or bad, it can affect you negatively in your brain. If it’s overly positive, you start getting a bit big headed. If everyone is saying your record’s sh*t, then you get upset. From what I hear, people tell me mostly pretty positive comments.” AM merges hip-hop drum beats with ‘70s heavy rock, a reflection of Arctic Monkeys’ penchant for listening to songs like “Ziggy Stardust.” “You know, riffs that are a bit sexy without being too heavy,” O’Malley describes. The writing of AM was collaborative, as opposed to previous efforts when the members penned parts individually. While other bands may find this daunting, Arctic Monkeys found it refreshing. “Of all the bands we know, we’re the four least likely to bicker,” O’Malley says matter of fact. “We let each other try what

we want to try and reach a decision. We all come up with the same conclusion. “When someone’s into something, you can read what they’re thinking.” Arctic Monkeys will play a sold out, career-spanning show at the Comerica Theatre on Saturday, October 25. It marks the second time in a year that Arctic Monkeys have played the area, having performed at the Marquee in December. “We played Tempe a few times now—four or five times, maybe,” O’Malley says. “We always have a great show whenever we’re there. It’s a good one for us. Some places in America we’ve never really been before. We don’t know if anybody’s going to turn out. But, Tempe, we have a nice rapport there. We always have a good time.”

PATIENCE

PAYS OFF Local band Kongos scores with certified platinum hit

Christina Fuoco-Karasinski » The Entertainer!

K

ongos is a really, really big deal these days, but just a few short months ago, you could have seen them in any small local venue around town. The four brothers, who split their time between South Africa and the Valley, attended Chaparral High School and Arizona State University. They’re truly homegrown heroes. The Kongos brothers come from a musical family, including their father, John, who is best known for his 1971 Top 10 hit single, “He’s Gonna Step On You Again,” on which the ‘90s band Happy Mondays based their hit “Step On.” “My parents taught us music from an early age,” says bass and lap slide guitarist Dylan Kongos. “They believed it was something we’d enjoy later in life. It wasn’t necessarily to create a band.” But now that their smash hit single “Come with Me Now” is certified platinum, selling over 1 million digital

copies in the United States, we’ll have to share them with the rest of the world. Sorry, Phoenix. Kongos have had a “pretty crazy” nine months on the road, according to Dylan. “It’s been 10 or 11 years of build up to that,” he says in his faint South African accent. “But the last eight or nine months have been insane.” He is somewhat modest about the popularity of “Come with Me Now,” which appears on Kongos’ sophomore album, Lunatic. “I think it’s timing and a little bit of luck,” he says. Kongos explains that bands like Mumford and Sons, with their propensity for banjos and acoustic rhythms, have opened up the minds of listeners and radio stations, paving the way for songs like “Come with Me Now.” “But the song’s definitely connecting,” he adds. “You can’t discount that. It’s a lot of timing and luck.” The song has resonated not only with fans and radio stations, but the rest of the entertainment industry as well. “Come

with Me Now” was placed in commercials for movies like “The Expendables 3” and was chosen as the theme song for the WWE pay-per-view “Extreme Rules.” “It’s kind of weird,” he says. “We’re on the bus and touring so much that we don’t get to watch that much TV or movies. We get texts from friends or messages saying, ‘I just saw your song on this or that.’ It’s pretty exciting.” The brothers—Danny, 25, guitars/ vocals; Jesse, 30, drums/vocals; and Johnny, 32, accordion/keyboards— actually released Lunatic in South Africa first in December 2012. After signing with Epic Records, they re-released the album on February 25. “The timing between the release of Lunatic in South Africa and the success it started to have here in the States has been over two years,” he says. Now it’s just a matter of time before Kongos can get back into the studio because their touring schedule is so jam-packed, which isn’t that bad of a problem, Kongos says. “First-world problems,” he adds with a laugh.

Three years ago I was preparing for one of the best concerts I have ever seen, but I didn’t know that yet. Halloween is always a good time, especially when you’re attending one of the top party schools in the country in the country. (Fork ‘em!) That night, I was going to see the dubstep master himself, Skrillex, with four of my closest friends. There are a lot of preconceived notions about the mix master these days, but back then, we were just in it for the good vibes. Skrillex’s screeching, industrial sound made us want to dance. We worked on our glow-in-the-dark skeleton costumes, which were a hit, and you bet we shook those bones. We got to the show, found our dancing partners and waited for Skrillex to play. I really don’t even remember who opened for him that night. All I remember is Skrillex, his stage production with insane visual designs and his heart-thumping set set. He incorporated hip-hop, dubstep and remixed songs, driving the crowd

for Skrillex has been a rollercoaster. I don’t think it was Skrillex himself that made me question if I liked him or not—it was dubstep and the scene in general. The genre overwhelmed me. Here was this bunch of loud and hard computer noises thrown together with little melody. I couldn’t process it. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed Skrill’s first album, Recess, but I wasn’t too interested in his music after that. Unless, of course, it was a live show, which is why you should see his

I still remember it like it was yesterday. After the concert, we went to Old Town’s Smashboxx to keep the party going. Although the crowd wasn’t big, it didn’t kill our vibe. The best part was that I was still 20, so the thrill of getting into Scottsdale’s “rave cave” was exciting—especially since the security that hadn’t let me in a week before was again checking our fake IDs. We passed. Now Smashboxx is closed and only lives in my head, compartmentalized under “Under 21 moments of badassery.” Throughout these past years, my love

show at Mesa Amphitheatre on October 9, even if you’re burnt out dubstep. Shows in venues like this are always best because they’re more personal than a massive fest like EDC or Ultra. And if you’re feeling a little antsy, don’t worry. The rave culture is so accepting of one another and newcomers. They permeate good vibes all around. Skrillex is some entry level shizz. If you’ve never been to a dance music event, now’s the time you can check it out without committing to a full-fledged festival. Choke it up and prepare to get down with the industry “it” boy. He just wants to get you dancing.

repare to lose your mind—er, brain— over this one. One of the Valley’s most masterful mixologists, Travis Nass, “spirit guide” bartender at Lon’s and The Last Drop Bar, both at the Hermosa Inn in Paradise Valley, showed us how to make a cocktail perfect for Halloween—the Zombie. Tell me about the drunkest customer you’ve ever had. The nice thing about working in nice places is that you don’t have to deal with too many drunken people. What is your number one pet peeve when working? Things not being in the right place behind the bar. When I’m working, most of the time, I don’t even look where I’m

Whiskey with a rosé back. What does ordering a rum and coke say about a person? I think that people should drink whatever makes them happy, but that drink says “I don’t like the taste of alcohol.” What do you like about this cocktail, a Zombie? It’s the perfect tiki drink. It has a strong rum backbone and a tropical, fruity taste without too much fruit in it. Plus it has so many layers of flavor. Hermosa Inn, 5532 N.
