Dear Members

The Host of the Coast welcomes spring on the California Riviera. The Clubs are busy; members celebrate the season of renewal with enthusiasm. Easter arrived at NBCC and BBC with great style and plenty of pastel color, an homage to the California bloom rising out of the green-carpeted coastal hills and valleys announcing that all can be right with the world. Be sure to visit the multiple Easter photo pages in both the NBCC and BBC sections in this issue. So many jubilant faces of children celebrating the season remind us that hope is alive and thriving amongst us.

Next time you visit the Balboa Bay Resort stop into the Boutique. Under the direction of new creative management, you will find an entire curated collection to explore for spring and summer. Coming up in May, the resort will host The Newport Beach Wine Festival over May 24, 25 and 26. The Grand tasting takes place on Saturday, followed by the popular Sunday champagne brunch on Sunday.

Most important, Mother’s Day Sunday, May 12th will be presented with plenty of love for mom. A culinary extravaganza will be offered at both clubs and the resort. Reserve your preferred destination as soon as possible. Finally in May, we raise the flag high in honor of Memorial Weekend. Events are planned for families Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the pools, the beach, and on the NBCC golf course for all to enjoy. Remember the sacrifice of others who secured our freedom, allowing us to share in peace, and celebrate their noble service to the nation.

Mark your calendar for Sunday June 16, the 17th annual Father’s Day Car Show returns to the resort produced by BBC board chairman John Wortmann with BBC event staff, led by Aaron Trent and Melanie Hertrick. Wortmann advises that this year may be the best one yet with amazing automotive art on display. Southern California car culture has been part of BBC life since the club was founded in 1948.

It’s all about family, friends and fun in the sun this spring at the Clubs!

Spread cheer, Bruce

INSIDE THE RARIFIED WORLD OF NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB

Dear NBCC Members,

The television show “Seinfeld” ran for nine seasons with 180 episodes, a measure that is iconic and influential in television history. The show has developed a cult-like following as “a show about nothing,” renowned for its ability to highlight the randomness of daily life. “Seinfeld” is often regarded as one of the greatest shows of all time, with many quotes and episodes becoming pop culture catchphrases.

I must confess: I am a fan of “Seinfeld” and could quote many episodes. One of the episodes that I’ve found to be the most clever was “The Bottle Deposit” episode.

If you have ever drank a bottle of water or a can of soda, you may have noticed a CRV, or California Redemption Value, on the bottle/can, which is the amount consumers pay for the beverage container—and also the amount to be returned upon recycling. Upon reading the label, California (and most other states) list the value as 5 cents. But, in Michigan, the value is doubled to 10 cents.

In the episode, Kramer and his friend Newman, who works as a postal employee, discuss the idea of collecting bottles and cans, then returning them to a recycling plant in Michigan. Kramer tells Newman it is impossible to make a profit due to expenses such as gas, toll fees and the expense of renting a truck to drive to Michigan.

Newman tells Kramer that there is always a surge in mail the week before Mother’s Day, requiring extra trucks. Newman signs up for one of the extra trucks, creating a plan to put the bottles and cans into it in order to avoid truck rental fees. Some bad breaks and additional minutiae in the episode make their effort a complete failure.

One of the lines from the episode that stands out as Kramer and Newman are planning their scheme is when Newman refers to Mother’s Day as the “mother of all mail days!”

As you read this, Mother’s Day is fast approaching. Let this serve as your reminder or nudge to mail a card, plan a celebration or make reservations for a special dinner or brunch. Newport Beach Country Club will again host an incredible Mother’s Day brunch featuring delicious food and a flower cart at the entrance offering a build-your-own-bouquet station.

I hope you’ll join us for our annual Mother’s Day brunch; reservations can be made by calling the Seahorse Grille host stand at 949-524-8120. At the very least, start thinking about Mom and send something out before the “mother of all mail days” begins.

All the best, Robin

The Art of Practice

CARLO BORUNDA, DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB, SHARES WHY PRACTICING ON THE COURSE CAN IMPROVE YOUR GOLF GAME.

We’ve all heard the saying “practice makes perfect.” And while that is true, when it comes to golf, where you practice is just as important as how. Hitting balls on the driving range doesn’t necessarily replicate the conditions and challenges of the actual course. As such, you need to venture out, hit the green and prepare in a way that will allow you to re-create the experience when it really matters.

“Practicing on the golf course is an important process for improving—and eventually lowering—your score,” says Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club. “… The course is … an excellent place to establish a game plan for how to play before a tournament.”

Here, Borunda reveals why you should practice on the golf course itself and how you can learn from the experience in order to boost your overall score.

BAY WINDOW: How can practicing on the golf course impact your game?

CARLO BORUNDA: Unlike the athletes who play other sports, golfers typically work on their technique at a different location than where they play. Driving ranges rarely simulate golf course conditions such as rough, sidehill lies, trees, etc. The golf course is the place where all of these elements of the game exist.

BW: How does a professional golfer approach a practice round? What can we learn?

CB: Most recreational golfers will never be able to achieve a TOUR-level golf swing, but we can all learn from how these pros use a practice round to improve. Although each pro has his or her own unique golf course strategy, most follow a similar approach to how they use a practice round to prepare for an important event. Their overall goal is to learn to navigate a golf course by understanding how each hole is designed to challenge their abilities. Power will be required on some holes, but most golf courses will test more than simply how far a player can hit a golf ball. In these cases, their short game skills, putting efficiency and overall accuracy are put to the test. By playing the golf course more than once, a professional will learn where to take advantage of opportunities and when to play more conservatively. Utilizing these strategies for how you play your home course is an excellent way to lower your own score.

BW: What elements of the game should be included in a practice round?

CB: The golf course is the ideal place to rehearse the effectiveness of your pre-shot routine. Make sure the timeliness and tempo of this routine optimize your concentration. Finetuning your setup by placing alignment sticks down at your feet as you play isn’t allowed in a competitive round, but can certainly be used in a practice round. Make sure to hit some extra putts and a few short game shots from different areas around the putting green. This will help

During your practice sessions, placing an extra golf club at your feet is a great tool to confirm your alignment and improve the accuracy of your shot.

When faced with a difficult situation, use one or two extra swings to strengthen confidence in your technique and gain a better understanding of what is required to execute a successful shot.

you learn where the best areas of the green are to land your approach shots during your actual round of golf.

BW: Why is it important to practice before you play the golf course?

CB: The golf course is where you test your abilities. A golfer’s preparation for a round is essential to achieving a passing score. Your practice time should be used to hone the many abilities required to play successfully. Make sure to spend enough time practicing your putting, short game and full swing. If you have extra time, use it to practice … various skills like punch shots, sand shots and your pre-shot preparation. Using your PGA coach’s experience is strongly advised for anybody looking to maximize their preparation efforts.

BW: Do you need to play all 18 holes to make it an effective session?

CB: An effective golf course session in which the golfer focuses on improving a few skills may be completed in less than 45 minutes. The remainder of your time on the golf course can be spent playing the course normally. This is how you can determine whether your prior efforts to improve were successful.

BW: What are some ways that you can simulate golf course practice?

CB: The driving range is a good alternative to playing on the golf course, especially if you have limited practice time. I recommend utilizing a scorecard from the golf course you intend to play or your phone to keep track of your results. Evaluate each shot as if you were playing [a full round]. If your tee shot curves to the right or left of your target, the next swing is a recovery shot. Keep track of the number of swings required to reach the green for each hole played. Unless you plan on putting after your range session—which I recommend—you can add two to your score to reflect your performance on that hole. Indoor practice with a launch monitor’s golf course simulation feature is a fantastic way to improve. This device allows you to keep track of both your distances and score. After each round, utilize your notes to identify what to work on in your next practice session.

BW: What are some things to remember when practicing on the golf course?

CB: When playing, you should always keep a pace of play that is considerate of other golfers. No one wants to play with or wait on a slow player to finish a hole. Timely play is achieved

Your golf bag can be an effective tool for addressing swing plane concerns. Prior to your swing, rehearse your backswing until the bag no longer interferes with your swing path.

by keeping your thoughts concise and simple. I want to emphasize that practicing on the golf course does not mean that you should hit multiple shots from each location. One or two extra shots are fine, … [but] sometimes it’s better to simply spend a few extra moments in preparation. Regardless, remember to keep the golf course in good condition by fixing divots with sand, raking bunkers and repairing pitch marks on the greens, even if you didn’t cause them.

BW: Anything else to add?

CB: An enjoyable and productive experience is to hire a caddie or trade off caddying for your friend, and vice versa. This will allow you to see each shot from a different and often more clear perspective. This feedback can make a huge difference in how well you play this and future rounds of golf.

DISCOVER WHAT YOUR CHILDREN CAN LEARN AS PART OF THIS SUMMER’S SWIM TEAM AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB.

Playing in the pool is often a child’s favorite summertime activity—and with Newport Beach Country Club’s annual Swim Team program, they can do so while socializing with others, learning proper form and water safety, and enjoying healthy competition.

“They make new friends and … learn what it takes to be on a team,” says Gabe Soria, recreation manager at NBCC, who runs the swim program.

This year’s eight-week session begins June 3 and runs through July 25, with tryouts, practices and swim meets culminating in an all-star contest at the end of the season.

TRYOUTS

In order to take part in the NBCC swim program, the children must attend tryouts and showcase their ability to swim— whether it’s a solid freestyle stroke or a simple dog paddle. “They need to be able to swim a full lap, without holding on, to be on the team,” Soria explains.

However, this is the only requirement the kids have to meet, as the majority of the program teaches them the skills they need to compete. If they can make their way down the lane without holding on, they’re able to move on and start practicing their strokes as they go along.

This year’s tryout will be held on May 9 at 5 p.m.

PRACTICES

All of the Swim Team practices are structured based on age, with each group getting about 45 minutes in the pool. The youngest swimmers go first, with 5 and 6 year olds in the water from 3:30 to 4:15 p.m., the 7 and 8 year olds practicing from 4:20 to 5:05 p.m. and the oldest group, the 9 and 10 years olds, learning from 5:10 to 5:55 p.m.

Throughout the session, the coach will work with the children to teach them the four main swimming strokes—freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke— in addition to things like breathing techniques, flip turns and diving. But the knowledge the kids will gain doesn’t

end there. Soria and the other coaches also emphasize lessons on leadership, integrity and winning as a team.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for them to learn teammateship and learn how to compete, but also to build relationships with other kids,” Soria adds. “… I try to teach them there’s no ‘I’ in ‘team.’ We just always support one another and we win as a team. It’s never me, me, me—it’s us.”

In addition to teaching them the importance of working together and supporting one another, Soria says he enjoys watching the kids grow over the years. “I’ve had kids from 4 years old and [they’re] still coming when they’re 8,” he explains. “Seeing them grow up is just a big part for me— seeing them improve as a swimmer each year, but also grow as an individual. So that

makes my job really enjoyable. My coaching style is really just helping them improve as an individual.”

Soria works hard to make each and every practice fun for the kids, offering them rewards like snacks or candy at the end of each session to keep them motivated and excited to be there. “It’s kind of like, ‘Hey guys, you give me 40 minutes of your time and you get a surprise at the end.’ It motivates them to keep providing great energy.” He also likes to incorporate fun games for the kids at the end of each practice.

SWIM MEETS

The Swim Team competes in special meets against other club teams, which typically include sister property Balboa Bay Club as well as those from places like Big Canyon,

Newport Coast, Shady Canyon, Emerald Bay and Newport Ridge.

As one way to pump the kids up for the swim meets, Soria provides zinc sunscreen in a variety of colors for them to experiment with. “They get really hyped up when I bring it out, writing the NBCC logo on their face or their arms, and it just makes it more fun,” he says.

To sign your children or grandchildren up to be on the NBCC Swim Team, please visit the NBCC app or email Soria directly at gsoria@newportbeachcc.com.

EXPLORE REFRESHING ROSÉ WINES FROM AROUND THE WORLD AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB.

As we inch closer to summertime, it’s important to start thinking about the three Bs: beach barbecues, boating season and being poolside. So let’s dive into what we should watch out for during Memorial Day weekend and beyond.

Rosé rosé rosé—it’s not just for Provence anymore. Many countries are embracing a dry style of rosé that is light, bright and focused on minerality instead of sweet fruit. With warm growing seasons, producers are focusing on picking the grapes early and shying away from holding off for maximum ripeness. This gives us light single varietals or blends that are more refreshing than heavy and filling.

The recent top rosé hits hail from different parts of France and Spain. Corsica, a little island off the coast of France, is home to some of the prettiest styles—lean and mean with bright acidity and lots of coastal influence flavor-wise. Quince and grapefruit matched with white flower and saline is perfect to pair with everything from oysters to crudo.

Spain on the other hand has some of the best sparkling sippers for summer. Set on the hills above Barcelona overlooking the Mediterranean is Cava. The conditions there are perfect, offering both cool and warm growing climates at the same time. Bright and ripe styles from Spain show just enough fruit and ripeness to keep you wanting more, with high acidity from the nearby ocean. These go great with caviar as well as seafood like lobster, shrimp or crab.

Here in the United States, we have been developing more styles that emulate the refreshing European wines, shying away from big, rich white zinfandels and moving into a more refined style that is light, dry, tart and inviting. From East Hampton in New York to California’s Sonoma coast, producers have developed early picking methods to

showcase refinement and elegance, achieving wines that showcase tart berry notes that are not heavy or high in alcohol so it’s not criminal to have a glass or two when you’re worrying about calories.

Wine is fun, but what we do with it is the best part. Memorial Day is right around the corner and the pool launch party is underway, bigger and better than ever. Keep

an eye out for Crochet and Rosé in the midst of summer, dive-in family movies or adultsonly parties at the pool after dark, and the Labor Day celebration that will close out the summer season.

We look forward to the start of another incredible summer here at Newport Beach Country Club—hopefully with a few summertime sips sprinkled in.

Dear Members of Newport Beach Country Club,

I want to thank you and congratulate you both at the same time. Thank you for being such amazing hosts to the PGA TOUR Champions who come to Newport Beach every spring, year after year, and congratulations to you for all the praise and accolades these players have for your course, your club and your staff.

As the new executive director of the Hoag Classic, I want to thank you on behalf of Hoag Hospital, the Hoag Hospital Foundation, the PGA TOUR and all of our other partners and charities who benefit from and make this event happen. We all know and understand that, ultimately, we could not do this without you and your club. So, thank you and your amazing staff for helping us make this such a special event for our community and everyone else involved.

We worked hard with your ownership and management to have the least impact on you, the members, as we could and we hope that was felt and recognized. We built the venue in record time and were off the course in record time as well. We hope to be here at NBCC for many more years to come and will continue to work hard to limit the impact and inconvenience of hosting this event while also looking for ways to enhance the members’ experience at NBCC during this prestigious PGA TOUR Champions event. If you haven’t in the past, please come out and enjoy the event in 2025, take advantage of this being at your club and get involved in any way you can. We want you to embrace this event and look at it as yours.

I welcome input and communication from all of you. If there is anything about the event that you want to discuss or if you’d like to find out how you can be more involved, please do not ever hesitate to contact me at the contact info below.

Thank you and best regards,

Scott Easton

On the Green

GREENSKEEPER JOSÉ TOLEDO HAS BEEN WITH NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB FOR MORE THAN 30 YEARS AND PLANS TO FINISH OUT HIS CAREER AT THE PROPERTY.

It’s been 33 years since José Toledo first started working at Newport Beach Country Club, having started at the property way back in the early ’90s. His career has flourished since he first accepted the greenskeeper position, showcasing his dedication and loyalty to our local club.

Before coming to NBCC, Toledo spent more than two decades working for The Old Spaghetti Factory, where he was a dishwasher and helped keep the restaurant spotless. But, in search of better money and a more

interesting job, he found his current position as greenskeeper. Toledo spent a few years juggling both of his jobs before he decided simply to focus on NBCC and hasn’t looked back since.

Every day that Toledo is scheduled, he starts work at 5:30 a.m. He spends the majority of his day outside, which he said is one of the best things about his job. Instead of being in an office or at a desk all day, he is able to look at the beauty of the world around him, taking in the green grass and swaying trees as he spends his day in nature.

Most of his time is spent mowing the greens and the rough though he also spends time raking and vacuuming with a tractor. Mowing is his favorite task and something that he even spends time doing at home once he’s off work. Because he has been with NBCC for so long now, Toledo says that nothing is difficult for him. He knows the ins and outs of the jsob and is able to work wherever

he is needed to ensure that there is a beautiful and safe golf course for members to enjoy.

Aside from mowing the lawn at home, Toledo also finds other ways to keep up his home, whether it’s by touching up paint or fixing things that are broken around the house. With six children, 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, he also has a big family that he enjoys spending time with. In fact, his son, Carlos, also works at NBCC and has for about 15 years.

As far as the future goes, Toledo plans to stay at NBCC until he is ready to retire—then, he will move to Mexico for six months of the year and split his time between there and California. As he already enjoys visiting Mexico City whenver he is able, Toledo is sure to find rest and relaxation as well as excitement in Mexico’s capital city. But, for now, find him on the greens and make sure to say hello.

Dear BBC Members,

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Balboa Bay Club moms! What a great spring we have been having at the Club. While we all would like to have sunny weather at the club every day, the winter and spring rains have really made the landscape all over California shine. While it may not be the superbloom we experienced previously, it is still a beautiful sight to see. If you haven’t taken the time to enjoy spring, I highly recommend that you treat yourself to a walk, hike, or nice jog outside.

Things are also springing up here at the Club as members continue to enjoy our new dinner menu. As of this writing, our talented culinary team lead by Executive Chef Prabeen Prathapan and Club Chef de Cuisine Chad Zbikowski are preparing to spring a new lunch menu on you that will be just as exciting as the dinner menu. We can’t wait for you to try it and look forward to your feedback!

This month we look forward to welcoming all our families for Mother’s Day Brunch at the Club and Resort. If you haven’t made your reservation, please hurry as spots are filling up quickly. While you’re at it, be sure to mark your calendar for all our upcoming events including our Cinco de Mayo celebration in Members Grill, a special edition of Bingo Night for adults only on Thursday, May 16th, Ladies’ Bunco on Monday, May 20th and of course a fun-filled Memorial weekend, featuring the Newport Beach Wine Festival and lots of member fun on the beach, lawn and poolside! A friendly reminder that Memorial day is a “members only” day at the club.

As we prepare for the busy summer season ahead we want to remind you to have your membership card handy and to check in your guests with our recreation attendant or Club desk when visiting the Club (guest fees and limits apply). As always, your weekly email blast will keep you apprised of all the happenings to ensure you don’t miss out.

Lastly, a thank you to all our members who came by drybar to enjoy some anniversary fun with us. Your support of our Balboa Bay drybar continues to warm our hearts. When we began this new adventure 6 years ago we were excited but did not know what to expect as this was a new venture for us and for drybar. We were and continue to be the only shop residing in a private club. We are thrilled to offer such a unique amenity to our members and guests, and it is only possible with the help of our talented team of bartenders and stylists, led by Breauna Cunningham and Noely Soto. On behalf of the entire drybar team, thank you for your support and we look forward to welcoming you at the club!

Love Ya, Mom!

MOTHER’S DAY MAGIC AT THE CLUBS AND RESORT

Mom’s Day is guaranteed to be grand…Start with an amazing Mother’s Day Brunch and a mimosa or stem of Champagne in the Balboa Bay Resort Grand Ballroom, named the #1 Resort in Newport Beach by U.S. News & World Report and Forbes Four-Star Rated. There are plenty of ways to sprinkle some glamour throughout her special day.

As Americans know it today, the second Sunday in May is Mother’s Day, inspired by Anna Jarvis’ efforts. In 1908, the U.S. Congress passed a law to honor mothers and maternal figures and Mother’s Day is now one of the most commercially successful American occasions. Make it a day worthy of celebrating the women who make it all happen!

A bountiful, beautiful buffet awaits you. Executive Chef Prabeen Prathapan’s Mother’s Day Sunday Brunch offers an extravagant display of traditional breakfast and lunch

dishes, including chilled seafood, an omelet station, a carving station and a scrumptious array of sushi, sashimi and nigiri. You’ll find artisanal cheese and charcuterie and a showcase of seasonal salads plus a divine dessert display; gelato made live using the nitrogen technique and a scrumptious Bourbon Bananas Foster station (I’ll meet you there!). Buy Mom something beautiful to make her day even more special from the South Coast Plaza Pop-up Shops featuring a few stores to browse at the Resort. Brunch includes flowing sparkling wine and mimosas and features live music to add to the ambiance.

Chef Prabeen, with his rich and diverse culinary background, truly understands how a sense of abundance, along with a Tequila Sunrise or two, can get the party started. He brings modern flavors and a lot of California sunlight into his menus and his curations are always a hit with the whole family.

Flower Power: Did you know that Carnations are traditionally the official flower of Mother’s Day…pink carnations specifically symbolize a mother’s pure and never-ending love and red carnations symbolize sincere love, affection and admiration. Tulips are an elegant choice for gifting and they are at the height of the season in May. Orchids represent love, luxury, beauty and strength and Lilies are associated with good fortune, happiness and motherhood. Hydrangeas symbolize gratitude, grace and beauty. And Roses are always a welcome adornment; in deep pink they represent appreciation and gratitude, and light pink roses represent happiness and joy.

For gift inspiration...The Lululemon Mini Everywhere Belt Bag is trending in springlike colors and for moms on the run, HOKA just introduced new cushiony sneakers in a variety of fresh designs. A fast-growing Meyer Lemon Tree is truly the gift that keeps giving, producing sweet-smelling blossoms and fruit for years to come. Marilyn Monroe said the only thing she wore to bed was Chanel, so there’s always that! And last but not least, there’s a new vodka on the market getting rave reviews; Barr Hill Vodka is distilled from Vermont organic raw honey, it has a subtly creamy flavor, and it is luscious.

A truly “Mom-umental” Mother’s Day is celebrated with family and friends and those you adore. A heartfelt hug to my darling daughter Jamie, mommy to my happy and inspiring grandson, Jagger, and to all the moms, grandmas, moms-to-be and matriarchs…may you delight in a day that’s all for you~
