Cindy Racco Managing Director
Balboa Bay Resort & Club
Dear Members,
As we wrap up the winter season and welcome the new spring, I reflect proudly on the accomplishments of the first quarter, including our community coming together in January to support our friends and neighbors who were affected by the LA wildfires, our team launching in February a new version of the Balboa Bay Club app, Forbes announcement in February that Balboa Bay Resort achieved its eighth year in a row as a Forbes Four Star property, everyone coming together again in March to support the Hoag Classic, and the inaugural launch of our new Balboa Bay Club Wine Society with the Chandon wine dinner at the end of March. Both the Hoag Classic and the Chandon wine dinner were outstanding events. I especially enjoy having many members share with me positive feedback on the new enhancements on the upgraded app including members booking fitness classes, registering for Club events, reserving a table at Members Grill and even paying their statements online. Please keep the feedback coming!

Like everyone else, the Balboa Bay Resort & Club team and I are ready for the spring with many more fun activities planned. Some events that will happen at Balboa Bay Resort & Club this spring include A+O Restaurant | Bar April Showers Brings Elderflowers Mixology Class on April 10, our Balboa Bay Club Kids Easter Party on April 19, our annual Easter Brunch on April 20 at Balboa Bay Resort, a new Mahjong Class for Balboa Bay Club on April 23, Jazz Night at Members Grill on April 25, Members Grill Kentucky Derby Celebration on May 3 as well as Cinco de Mayo on May 5, A+O Restaurant | Bar Mother’s Day Wine Tasting Class on May 9, our annual Mother’s Day Brunch at Balboa Bay Resort on May 11, Balboa Bay Club’s Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 12, the spectacular Newport Beach Wine Festival from May 23-25 and finally our annual Memorial Day Celebration at Balboa Bay Club on May 26. It will be an exciting spring!
I look forward to seeing many members at the upcoming events, encourage all members to continue providing feedback to me on how we can make the club better and invite you all to welcome in this new season!

Bruce Cook Editor
Dear Members,
As we embark on another spectacular God-given spring of renewal, I am filled with the grace and wonder of life’s order and the simplicity we complicate with often unnecessary human overreach in the ever-mysterious search for the meaning of life. Oh boy, that’s some opening statement for the April issue of Bay Window. I apologize, yet it comes from deeply unknown DNA (we all carry the lives of our ancestors in some form of chemical storage) and I am certain that I descend from men and women searching for God in their time and place.
In spring, more than any other season of the year, this question of life’s meaning is front of mind. Seemingly, it has been ever thus. For this is the season of rebirth; Easter delivers hope of life eternal, Passover offers the promise of freedom and justice over bondage and domination, Ramadan blesses with its month of introspection and guidance directing human beings to follow a Godly path in life. Other faiths and philosophies follow, imparting promise and hope in the spring.
So, it is natural to wonder about our purpose on the planet. We ask, why? I like an answer that comes from Forrest Gump. Yes, that Forrest Gump from the Tom Hanks movie. Okay, after all my serious philosophical opening words, this is the bottom line.
“I don’t know if we have a destiny, or if we’re all just floating around accidental – like on a breeze, but I think maybe it’s both.”
There it is friends and fellow Club members. We all have our very unique God-given path or destiny if you prefer, and at the same time, we are the luckiest floating leaves taken with the coastal breeze off the Pacific in Newport Beach, California. We live in human paradise. Whatever heaven may be, I think we are privileged to live in a place modeled in heaven’s image.

In April we honor and embrace miracles. In this issue, explore all the privileges and opportunities awaiting your participation and celebration during this season of joy, faith, and family.
Once again, in the simplest of expression, Forrest said it best, “Some people don’t think miracles happen; well, they do.”
Tell your family and friends this spring season how much they matter. Miracles live in us all.
Looking forward to seeing you and celebrating with you this month at the Clubs.

But first I want to thank all our members who joined us last month for the 2025 Hoag Classic. Year after year tournament weekend does not disappoint. 2025 once again proved to be a great tournament with more than its share of exciting golf moments.
Congratulations to Scott Easton, Executive Director of Hoag Charity Sports, and his team for putting on an incredible tournament week. Year after year this tournament brings the community together and helps fund some incredible programs. I am so proud of all the support our Balboa Bay Club members give to this event and look forward to celebrating next year’s tournament with you.

Join us for our family Easter celebration on Saturday, April 19th and make your reservations early for Easter Brunch on Sunday, April 20th in the Ballroom or enjoy a delectable Easter menu in Members Grill. Whichever your choice the Easter Bunny will help you celebrate by stopping by to say hello.

April Showers Bring Elderflowers
By Lana Sills

Its delicate floral notes and subtle sweetness create an exquisite balance that elevates any drink. Elderflower Liqueur has a light golden hue and is made using the petals of Sambucus nigra from the Savoie region in France. The secret to this sweet treat is Elderflower blossoms hand-picked in the late spring in the foothills of the Alps. Elderberries are exceptionally novel; they have the look of large bunches of micro-blueberries
and have a bevy of uses when it comes to making syrups and medicines. The berry itself has medicinal uses dating back thousands of years and was a popular ingredient for fritters, infused vinegars and assorted pickles in medieval Europe and England. Versions of an Elderflower cordial recipe can be traced back to Roman times and there are great health benefits of Elderberries, it’s considered an antiviral herb full of natural antioxidants and
Vitamin C.
Sip it from a cordial glass as an after dinner drink or add it to some bubbly or, better yet, do not miss the Elderflower Cocktails at A+O Restaurant | Bar in April. Enjoy sweet, smooth cocktails with notes of peach, pear and grapefruit all enhanced by the endless charm of the Elderberry.
An informative and fun Mixology class at A+O Restaurant | Bar will be held on April 10th for $45 per person presented by Mixologist Christina Ampudia. Enjoy the Elderflower Margarita, the Blackberry Elderflower Gin & Tonic and the Sparkling Vodka Elderflower Cocktail. The “April Showers Bring Elderflowers” class for resort guests, members and locals will focus on the floral bouquet of flowers in Elderflower drinks and will be Interactive.
At home, I make delicious lychee martinis with St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur…a divine drink. Or, put some in your tea before going to bed for a wonderful night’s sleep! Craft the perfect French Gimlet with gin and fresh lime juice, adding a splash of Elderflower Liqueur to make a refreshing masterpiece. Elegant and sophisticated.
This A+O waterside venue overlooks the yacht and Duffy boat traffic in Newport Harbor and is always inviting for breakfast, lunch, dinner and sunset drinks around the fireside tables on the water’s edge patio. Indulge in the Chicken & Waffles and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes to the juicy A+O Burger (don’t forget the Bacon Jam), the scrumptious Fresh Baked Focaccia with Olive Tapenade and house made Ricotta; the luscious Green Goddess-Smoked Turkey-Smoked Bacon Club Sandwich, and the especially memorable piled-high, cooked-to-perfection buttery Lobster Roll.
Elderflower Liqueur is one of the most versatile cocktail modifiers, complimenting vodka, gin, tequila, sparkling wine and more. It is the darling of the craft cocktail scene and is frequently referred to as “bartender’s ketchup” for its crowd pleasingness. So let’s sip and savor…Cheers to floral perfection!
The Artful Study of Wine
Q&A with Resort Manager Inga Winkler on Balboa Bay Club Wine Society

Q: What makes the Wine Society so special?
The Balboa Bay Club Wine Society offers an unparalleled experience for our members, combining exclusive access to premium wines, intimate tasting events, and unique winery experiences. What truly sets this society apart is the opportunity to enjoy carefully curated selections from renowned wineries, many of which are not easily accessible elsewhere.
Beyond exceptional wines, members gain direct engagement with esteemed winemakers, private estate visits, and exclusive tastings – elevating their appreciation and knowledge of fine wines. Additionally, participation in the Wine Society supports a meaningful cause, as a portion of proceeds benefits the Balboa Bay Scholarship Foundation, helping local college-bound youth.
With seasonal wine shipments, private events, and VIP winery privileges, the
Wine Society is more than just a club – it’s a gateway to the finest wine experiences, shared among a community of like-minded enthusiasts who value quality, connection, and philanthropy.
Q: We’re already members of several wine clubs. Why should we join this one?
Even if you're already part of other wine clubs, the Balboa Bay Club Wine Society offers an experience that goes beyond the ordinary. Unlike clubs that focus on a single winery, our society provides access to a thoughtfully curated selection of premium wines from top wineries across California, offering a diverse and exclusive tasting journey.
Membership includes invitations to private tastings, winemaker-hosted dinners, and VIP estate visits, providing immersive and personalized wine experiences, available at an additional cost. You'll also enjoy seasonal wine placements at select club restaurants, allowing you to explore exceptional wines in a refined and social setting.
If you're looking for a wine club that offers more than just deliveries – one that connects you to exclusive wines, remarkable experiences, and a community of fellow enthusiasts – the Balboa Bay Club Wine Society is the perfect fit.
Q: What are you most excited about, or which wine release are you particularly looking forward to?
What excites me most about the Balboa Bay Club Wine Society is the unwavering commitment we’ve received directly from each of the winemakers. These aren’t just wines being shipped off to members –they’re personal expressions of passion, dedication, and craftsmanship. Each winemaker we partner with is deeply involved, ensuring that every bottle tells a story, from the vineyard to the glass. This level of connection and authenticity is what makes our Wine Society truly special.
One winery I’m particularly excited about is Babcock. Over 15 years ago, their wines
sparked my personal love and appreciation for wine, setting me on a journey that led to working in the industry for five years. That passion took me to Chandon in Napa, where I was able to immerse myself in the world of winemaking before joining Balboa Bay Resort. To now bring that journey full circle – sharing wines that have shaped my own appreciation of the craft – is incredibly rewarding.
As for upcoming releases, I’m especially excited for what’s ahead. Each selection has been carefully curated to offer our members something unique – whether it’s a highly allocated vintage, a winemaker’s passion project, or a hidden gem that rarely leaves the winery. With every shipment, we’re not just delivering exceptional wine; we’re sharing the stories, dedication, and artistry behind each bottle. I can’t wait for our members to experience these incredible wines firsthand.
Q: Some members have expressed concerns about changing out their favorite wines. What would you say to those who are hesitant?
I completely understand that some members may feel hesitant about changing out their favorite wines – but I want to reassure everyone that we are not removing any of the beloved favorites from the menu. In fact, our goal is to enhance and elevate the wine experience in the Members Grill by layering in new selections that take us on a journey through California’s best wine regions and showcase true craftsmanship.
Think of it as creating a well-balanced list that offers both the expected and the unexpected – keeping those familiar favorites you know and love, while also introducing exciting new wines for members who enjoy discovering something different.
Ultimately, we’re building a wine program that respects tradition and favorites, but also evolves to bring fresh, high-quality selections. So whether you’re in the mood for a trusted favorite or ready to explore something new, there will always be something on the list that feels just right.

Spring Awakening
EASTER CELEBRATION AT THE CLUB
By Alex Chazen

It feels like every month, I say that this is one of my favorite times to live in Newport Beach, and yet every month I truly believe that it is. April brings with it glimpses of spring and warm weather, and of course, the joy of celebrating the season at our club. From gourmet brunches to festive egg hunts, and of course our wonderful Easter Bunny, the club provides an unforgettable Easter experience that brings families together by the bay in a setting of true coastal elegance.
Every holiday brings with it some new magic from the culinary team, and Easter is no different. Our club’s excellent chefs always serve the most beautiful food in a setting that celebrates the beauty of spring. The mimosa and Bloody Mary stations add a celebratory touch, allowing adults to sip and savor while the kids run around the lawn in their beautiful easter clothes.
Everyone enjoys an easter egg hunt –whether you’re the child searching high and
low for a colored egg, or the adult getting to experience that feeling of joy through their eyes. No Easter at the club would be complete without our very own Easter Bunny – collecting pictures year after year with the kids, from their terror as babies, to their indifference as teens is another family tradition for many of our members.
The reality is that with many holiday traditions, the afternoons can be forgotten – a wonderful brunch and egg hunt with a large festive dinner provides little time for relaxation. For avid readers of my column, it will be no surprise that my recommendation is to find those quiet moments. Bring a bathing suit bag to brunch and let the kids hop in the water while you relax on a chaise lounge chair. Build a sandcastle with them on the beach while watching the day, and the sailboats, yachts, and Duffys float by.
As with every holiday at the club, the sense of community at our club provides another major benefit to celebrating Easter
here. Members come together to share in the holiday spirit, creating memories that in turn create traditions. Before you know it, you can watch your children grow just by looking back at their photos with the Easter Bunny.
As the day winds down, families can gather for a sunset Duffy ride or a quiet(ish) moment around the fire on the Members Grill terrace, reflecting on the beauty of the holiday and the company of loved ones. Newport’s world famous sunset creates a magical frame for what was a perfect day.
Easter at Balboa Bay Club is more than just a celebration; it’s a cherished tradition that brings together the best of family, food, and festivity in our unrivaled setting on the bay. Whether this is your first or seventieth Easter at the Bay Club, I hope that you find meaning and joy in your day with family and friends at your home away from home.

GARY CRISP’S SUPER BOWL LEGACY FOR MILITARY HEROES
By Kelly Bennett

After 14 unforgettable years, Gary and Julie Crisp have once again hosted a spectacular Super Bowl celebration, honoring the brave men and women who have served in the military. On February 9, 2025, at the American Legion Post 291 in Newport Beach, Gary, Julie, and their son Carter brought together 300 Camp Pendleton Marines and 200 veterans for a day filled with fun, camaraderie, and heartfelt appreciation. This event has become a hallmark of the Crisps’ commitment to giving back to the military community.
As the Founder and CEO of Crisp Imaging, a leading digital printing provider in the West with 24 locations, the Crisps have always used their success to make a positive impact beyond the business world. Crisp Imaging, which Gary and his wife Julie founded in 2001 and built from the ground up, serves a wide range of industries with services such as reprographics, color printing, and digital services and software. But it’s through their philanthropic efforts the Crisps have truly made their mark,
particularly with their long-standing signature event honoring military personnel.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
The story of the Crisp Family Super Bowl Party began in 2006 when the Crisps decided to give back to the military community in a meaningful way. After years of business success, they felt a strong desire to do more for those who have served the country and protected our freedom. The idea for the party was sparked by Gary’s own appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans and active-duty military personnel. His love for sports, particularly football, became the perfect vehicle to combine a celebration of the Super Bowl with honoring those serving and veterans who have served.
Gary’s commitment to supporting military personnel is deeply personal. His father, a World War II veteran with the 17th Airborne in Operation Varsity, received a Purple Heart for his service. Gary’s two brothers also served in the military, one as a Colonel and physician and the other as a Vietnam veteran. Gary’s motivation is simple: “It’s the least we can do to thank our new service members for committing to protect our country and to honor our veterans for the sacrifices they’ve made.”
THE EVENT: MORE THAN JUST A GAME
This year, the day was filled with exciting activities, such as live music performances by DJ Salam Wreck, American Idol’s Perry O’Neal, and the USC Marching Band. Guests enjoyed WWE Lucha Libre wrestling, met NFL legends and celebrities, participated in raffles, free haircuts and massages, and even took a cruise on two luxurious yachts. The event, which benefits the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group, provided entertainment and a powerful display of gratitude for our service members. The perfect day of fun.
Beyond the festivities, the event’s significance lies in the connections it fosters. Veterans and new recruits from Camp Pendleton come together to share experiences, build relationships, and create lasting memories. It’s a place where people can celebrate their shared commitment to service.
A PHILANTHROPIC VISION BEYOND THE PARTY
Gary’s dedication to education also extends to the public sector, where he sits on the Board of Counselors at USC’s Rossier School of Education. The Crisps have been champions for underrepresented students through the USC Leslie and William McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative, which helps young people gain access to higher education. His years of involvement in these programs have helped numerous students overcome barriers to success.
Gary is also an active member of the Balboa Bay Club and the Newport Beach Country Club, The Pacific Club, and the Jonathan Club in Los Angeles, further connecting with his community and enjoying the company of like-minded individuals who share his values of service, generosity, and leadership. In addition, Gary is a proud member of the SONS of the American Legion Post 291, where his ongoing involvement in supporting veterans and their families further reflects his commitment to honoring those who have served.
The Super Bowl party benefits the Dana Point 5th Marine Regiment Support Group and is just one example of the Crisps’ unwavering dedication to supporting military families and honoring veterans. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served our country and the importance of giving back to those who have given so much.
Looking ahead, Gary and his family remain committed to continuing this tradition of service, building on the relationships they’ve cultivated over the years, and ensuring that military personnel and veterans always feel appreciated and valued. As Gary reflects on the success of the 2025 Super Bowl event, he is reminded of the importance of community, gratitude, and the power of one family’s dedication to making a difference.
If you would like to participate in the 2026 Super Bowl party through donations, volunteering, or sponsorships, please visit www.DanaPoint5thMarines.com for more information.

BBC SPORTS OFFER CHOICES FOR ALL MEMBERS
By Ryan G. Cook

Pickleball, one of the fastestgrowing sports in the world, has taken the athletic community by storm, captivating players of all ages and skill levels. Combining elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, this fast-paced yet accessible sport is rapidly gaining popularity in gyms, recreation centers, and sports facilities across the country. Its appeal lies in its simplicity and social nature, making it easy to learn while offering an exciting and competitive challenge. As demand for pickleball courts rises, gymnasiums and community centers are adapting by repurposing spaces and even investing in dedicated courts to meet the growing interest. The sport’s rapid expansion reflects its widespread popularity, firmly establishing it as a staple in recreational fitness.
Since the ownership change in 2012, the Pickup and Martin family have invested
millions of dollars to transform the Bay Club’s facilities into some of the finest in Southern California. The addition of pickleball courts is just one of the latest enhancements, with the Bay Club repurposing its gymnasium to include two pickleball courts, each occupying one half of the basketball court. This innovative approach allows the gymnasium to seamlessly host basketball, volleyball, and pickleball, offering a versatile space that meets the growing demand for this fastexpanding sport while maintaining the club’s commitment to providing exceptional facilities for its members.
Long-time members, like the Leeper family, have eagerly embraced the opportunity to reserve the pickleball court. Every Tuesday night, you’ll find Chas and his wife enjoying friendly matches with friends and fellow members. While Chas is known for his competitive spirit,
the Leepers play for fun, relishing the opportunity to team up with others for some healthy physical activity. They love the game and appreciate the chance to unwind, bond, and stay active in a relaxed and enjoyable setting at the Balboa Bay Club.
The club now offers a wide range of premium recreational amenities designed to suit all interests. What Matters Most
Garth Brooks revolutionized country music. He blended traditional sounds with pop and rock elements, which broadened the genre’s appeal to mainstream audiences. His innovative performances and cultural impact have solidified him as one of the most influential artists in country music history. He was the icon of a generation of country music lovers and transformed the genre and live performances.
If I have lost the non-country music folks – stick with me, the connection to NBCC and hospitality is coming.
Garth Brooks revolutionized the way country artists engaged with their fans, emphasizing the importance of authenticity and emotional connection. He had an incredible gift of creating real and genuine bonds.
I have listened to a lot of Garth Brooks songs, some are great for karaoke and some are great for parties and celebrations. I have also heard some very meaningful and powerful lyrics. Perhaps the most profound and impactful quote from Garth Brooks is:

“What you do Matters, Why you do it Matters More, Who you do it with Matters Most.”
As I reflect on the completion of Hoag Classic Newport Beach and begin to look toward our active Spring and Summer seasons at the Club, I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with so many great teammates (employees) at the Club. I could do hospitality or “Club” anywhere; I love hospitality and Club for being able to make people happy through shared personal experience and human connection; But, being able to do it with so many great people at NBCC is what really matters most.
As with anything in life – who you do it with matters most. Whether it is your spouse/life partner, who you travel with, who plays in your golf foursome, who is your friend group (or a child’s friend group) – who you do it with matters most, and I am looking forward to a great Spring and Summer season at the Club with some of the finest people I know.
All the best, Robin Shelton

The Ashtons moved to Newport Beach in 2021, and both Taylor and Kailey are corporate lawyers in Orange County – Taylor at the law firm Latham & Watkins and Kailey at the law firm K&L Gates. In their free time, both are avid golfers (Kailey having played collegiate golf at the University of Miami) and are involved in various community organizations. As a family, the Ashtons enjoy spending time outdoors, traveling and finding a great new playground for Troy to explore.

The Mena Family
Joy (a Newport Beach native) and Victor enjoy life on Balboa Island as they embrace being almost empty-nesters. They love living and serving in the community, Mariners Church and now, NBCC! After studying abroad and completing an amazing internship in New York, Emilie has returned home and is now an Assistant Stylist at Neiman Marcus.
Joy and Victor’s two sons live farther from home. Sage, 21, resides in Northern Utah, where he works and embraces the outdoor adventures of Utah. Trey, 25, lives in Miami, where he is building his media company, specializing in content creation for NBA players, sports teams, brands, and other athletes. Despite the Mena family’s UCLA roots, Trey’s company recently executive produced the USC Football hype video.
Victor, after 28 years building and growing First Republic Bank, was recently recruited to launch Citizens Private Bank in Southern California. He is set to open a new office in Newport Center in the coming months.
Joy is known as the “baby whisperer,” having helped many parents of newborns get the sleep they need and deserve.

Overcoming the Lie
FIND OUT HOW TO BATTLE COMPLICATED LIES ON THE COURSE AND PLAY YOUR BEST GOLF GAME.
By Ashley Ryan

Difficult lies in golf can significantly impact a player’s strategy and performance. These challenging situations arise when the ball comes to rest in a challenging position, such as in deep grass or sand, on a hill or near another obstacle.
“A complicated lie occurs when a golfer is unable to take their usual stance or swing due to the location of their golf ball on the golf course, adding a layer of difficulty to the shot,” explains Carlo Borunda, the director of instruction at Newport Beach Country Club.
Golfers must assess the lie carefully and adjust their stance, club selection and shot technique while navigating these situations in order to prevent the game turning into a potential disaster. Failure to do so can lead to costly mistakes, shifting the momentum

Above: An uphill lie will produce a higher trajectory and potentially shorter carry distance. Choose a less lofted golf club to offset this effect. Additionally, positioning the ball slightly back in your stance can help achieve cleaner contact.
of the game. Understanding and managing complicated lies is essential for any golfer looking to elevate their game.
Here, Borunda reveals how to overcome complicated lies, the best ways to practice for these situations and how to stay mentally focused through it all.
Bay Window: What are the most common types of complicated lies golfers encounter and how do golfers typically experience these situations?
Carlo Borunda: A ball sitting in deep rough, on a side hill lie or in a plugged lie (resting in its pitch mark) in a sand bunker are some of the more typical complicated situations found on the golf course. Most of these situations are a result of an errant swing from the teeing area or approach shot to the green. The plugged lie
in the sand will usually occur when the golfer misses the green with a wedge. This more lofted golf club launches the ball higher and produces maximum backspin, which increases the chances of the golf ball sticking exactly where it originally landed in the sand. The golf course design will generally dictate the frequency your golf ball will end up on a side hill lie.
BW: How can these conditions negatively impact your game?
CB: Golf is challenging enough as it is; complicated conditions can frustrate even the most experienced golfers. These unexpected situations will test the golfer’s mental and athletic problem-solving skills. The difficulty of getting the golf ball close to the hole will add one or more strokes to your score in most of these situations.
Left: A plugged lie in the sand will result in less backspin. To help stop the golf ball on the green, set up with an open club face and accelerate the club head deep into the sand below the ball.

BW: What are some of the best ways to overcome a complex lie?
CB: Unless you’re willing to risk adding strokes to your score, most of these situations can be resolved by accepting the simplest solution. Use a wedge to pitch the golf ball out of deep rough and back into the fairway. When the golf ball is resting on a precarious lie where your balance is compromised, a small swing that moves it to a more reasonable position on the golf course is the best approach.
BW: What do you recommend if the ball comes to rest on a side hill?
CB: Your balance is one of the most important things to consider throughout the swing when facing a sidehill lie. Adjust your stance and posture to the slope until you are comfortable with the course conditions. Making clean contact with the golf ball is the main objective. Reducing your swing speed—and, occasionally, the overall length of your swing—will help you avoid more trouble.
These adjustments may require altering your expectations for distance control and accuracy. For an uphill lie, widen your stance and place the ball back, which will produce a steeper swing path. Maintain the same wide stance for a downhill lie and position the golf ball … [further] forward. These steps will assist in producing a more shallow attack angle to the golf ball and launching it a little higher. Adjust your posture more upright and position

Left: To achieve an ideal result, modify your posture and swing based on where the golf ball lies. This could include adjusting your balance, grip or even the club you use to improve your chances of getting closer to the hole.
Above: When the golf ball is in the rough, add some swing speed to compensate for the resistance from thicker grass. A steeper swing will produce better contact, improving distance control and accuracy.
the ball slightly back in your stance for a golf ball that is sitting above your feet, parallel to your target line. Anticipate a golf ball that will curve right to left (for a right-handed golfer). Conversely, lean more from the hips and add some knee flex when the golf ball is sitting below your feet. Position the golf ball more forward in your stance to offset a lower ball flight that curves from left to right.
BW: How can you successfully get the ball out of a divot?
CB: The initial step is to evaluate the golf ball’s position within the divot. A ball positioned in the center of a shallow divot can be played as if it were being struck from a similar position in the fairway. The only necessary adjustment is to move the golf ball to the center of your stance to promote ball first contact. However, when the ball is in a more severe position, additional adjustments to your setup and swing will be required. For a ball that is sitting below ground level, you should select a more lofted golf club and position the ball further back in your stance. This ball position will naturally promote a steeper attack angle. These adjustments will result in a lower trajectory, which requires careful consideration when choosing your target. In combination with selecting a more lofted golf club, you should set up with a slightly open club face to assist in lifting the golf ball out of the divot.
BW: How can a difficult lie impact a golfer’s overall strategy on the course?
CB: A lot depends on the severity of the lie and the golf ball’s location on the golf course. Success is dependent on your skill level relative to the circumstances. The goal is to make a clear decision where you evaluate all of your options and choose the best solution based on score.
BW: How can you practice for these situations?
CB: Some of these shots can be challenging to practice at the average driving range, so it’s important to dedicate some time during noncompetitive rounds of golf to work on these situational techniques. Pay close attention to how the trajectory and carry distance of the golf ball is influenced by these complex lies.
BW: How do you stay mentally focused when facing a tough lie?
CB: Throughout a round, I remind myself that I can only really control my composure, and that golf is not a game of perfection. I recognize that the golf ball bounces into more good situations than bad. Whenever I find a tough lie, I focus on my fundamentals and remain calm. A positive mindset where you accept the challenges presented by the golf course will make the game more enjoyable overall. Ultimately, honing your mental game is just as important as perfecting the swing.
Leading the Way
Newport Beach Country Club General Manager Robin Shelton, Assistant General Manager
Melanie Stacklie and Clubhouse Manager Sarah Sanchez are helping educate the next generation of club managers.
By Ashley Ryan

Three Newport Beach Country Club leaders are leaving their mark on the industry in an exciting way, leading the next generation of club managers through specialized Business Management Institute (BMI) programs.
These BMI programs are required learning for the Club Management Association of America’s professional Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation, which the organization says helps enrich skills, provide credibility in the field and demonstrate deep commitment. This can be crucial for anyone looking to gain a promotion at their club or even just prepare for future challenges, offering important knowledge and business tools to enhance impact.
The CCM certification got its start back in 1965, with the BMI programming following in the 1980s—though it’s been about two years since NBCC’s general manager, Robin Shelton, started teaching.
“I love teaching and preaching,” he explains. “When you get to talk about a subject that you love and are passionate about, you always want to do it. I wouldn’t do something that would ever detract from the club; I would never be on a speaker circuit or tour. But it’s nice to have some variety and feel like you’re contributing to the development of others, your industry and your organization.”
Shelton—along with Sarah Sanchez, NBCC’s director of food & beverage—leads the BMI Food & Beverage Management program twice a year in Houston, Texas. These sessions take a deep dive into club food and beverage operations, in respect to both management and control, offering participants the chance to visit local clubs and enjoy a wine/beer and cheese tasting.
Since getting involved, Shelton says that he has also learned new things that he can

incorporate once he returns to NBCC, allowing him to give back to club members in addition to future club managers from the U.S. and beyond.
“I get takeaways of something that landed with these people that may resonate with our staff as well. … A lot of idea sharing comes up, and … it gives me more confidence that, hey, we’re doing the right things,” Shelton adds. “And I think our staff also appreciates knowing that there’s some industry

the private club industry,” Stacklie explains. “While the number of women in leadership roles remains relatively low, I am fortunate to work at a club where the general manager and ownership actively support and promote women into these positions. This experience allows me to share firsthand insights into working in an environment where women make up the majority of the leadership team. My hope is to contribute to the ongoing conversation and encourage further progress in the industry.”
Stacklie went through the same program herself while pursuing her own CCM certification, noting that stepping into this role has been a full-circle moment in her professional journey.
“Serving as a speaker for one of CMAA’s Business Management Institutes is an incredibly meaningful experience for me, as it provides an opportunity to give back to the private club industry,” she says. “… It is a privilege to get to share the knowledge I have gained with others who are on a similar path.”
affirmation that the leaders of their club are well-respected enough to educate future leaders.”
In addition to Shelton and Sanchez, NBCC’s assistant general manager, Melanie Stacklie, is also one of the program’s leaders, traveling to Los Angeles multiple times per year to teach sessions on BMI Leadership Principles.
“I speak on the topic of women in leadership, an important discussion within
As these three NBCC leaders influence the next generation, the experience further reinforces their belief that they’re doing things right here in Newport Beach. “Our peers in the industry look at our club as setting the standard—they look to us and want to know what we do,” Shelton says. “I think that’s really cool and sets us apart from other clubs, too.”
He also notes that it’s rare enough to have one or two professionals teaching for CMAA, let alone three. “It speaks volumes to what we’re doing here at the club,” he adds, “and the caliber of people that we have on our staff here.”

Summer Rec Center
WITH A DIVERSE LINEUP OF ACTIVITIES, MEMBERS AND THEIR CHILDREN CAN EMBRACE SUMMER MEMORIES AT NEWPORT BEACH COUNTRY CLUB.
By Ashley Ryan

When the summer sun heats up Southern California, let Newport Beach Country Club delight with its varied summer programming. The recreation department strives to create events and activities that keep families entertained and engaged while staying active and learning something, too.
“A diverse recreation program ensures that every member—regardless of age or interest— has opportunities to stay active, socialize and enjoy the club,” says Veronica Alarcon, recreation director at Newport Beach Country Club. “Whether it’s fitness, social leagues or family-friendly activities, our goal is to create a welcoming environment where members can connect and engage in a healthy, active lifestyle.”
Some of the most exciting activities include the upcoming bocce ball league, which kicks off again in May, as well as the kid’s summer camp and youth swim team. All of this will help create a lively energy around NBCC.
“With warmer weather and longer days, spring and summer are ideal for outdoor activities, social gatherings and family fun,” says Alarcon. “Our pool, camps and leagues are in full swing, creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere at the club.”
Read on to discover the ins and outs of the club’s summer programming for kids.
COMPETITION & CONNECTION
It’s been two years since Bianca Gillett, director of recreation and fitness at NBCC, developed the club’s first bocce ball tournament in an effort to make use of and generate excitement around the on-site courts.
After a few rounds of tournaments, the event has evolved into its current iteration, which launches in May. This shortened version will run for three weeks instead of the typical seven and keeps the focus solely on bocce ball,

eliminating the cornhole element that was previously included.
Combining a competitive format of gameplay with social components, this is a great way to enjoy structured fun and make new friends at the club. “Members can look forward to an enjoyable mix of competition and camaraderie,” Alarcon notes. “It’s a fantastic way to unwind, make new connections and enjoy the club’s beautiful setting. Plus, it’s open to all skill levels, so everyone can participate and have fun.”
Friendly competition is welcomed during weekly matches in a relaxed setting, with an emphasis on bocce ball—though there will be a new side game “to keep things fresh and exciting,” Alarcon adds.
CAMP ADVENTURES
Delve into exciting camps this summer, with curated programming that will keep kids busy in the midst of learning and having fun.
Entertainment will change weekly, ranging from things like bounce houses to a reptile petting zoo and science guy. Aside from these specialized activities, the kids will enjoy fun with food throughout the week, learning to cook or prepare different dishes, as well as participating in group sports, arts and crafts, team-building games and then finish the day by diving into the NBCC swimming pool.
“Rather than weekly themes we have special event days: a water-themed day featuring slip and slides, water toys and small pools on the lawn; Thankful Thursday, dedicated to
community outreach; and Fun Friday, when we bring in exciting entertainment for the club,” Alarcon explains. “We could still add weekly themes, so stay tuned.”
Running from June 9 through Aug. 15, NBCC’s weekly summer camps are open to children or grandchildren of members between the ages of 4 and 10.
MAKING A SPLASH
Those who sign up for the NBCC Swim Team are in for a treat, able to spend time in the refeshing swimming pool nearly every day of the week. Practices, which run Monday through Thursday, focus on stroke development, endurance training and racing techniques—all while fostering teamwork and positive sportsmanship in an encouraging setting, Alarcon says.
“Beyond improving swimming skills, the team promotes discipline, goal setting and teamwork,” she notes. “It’s also a great way for kids to build friendships and enjoy friendly competition.”
Competition comes in the form of multiple swim meets that the team will participate in. Opponents this season include Balboa Bay Club, Shady Canyon Golf Club, Newport Coast Country Club, Newport Ridge, Costa Mesa Aquatics Club, Emerald Bay and Big Canyon Country Club.
“The swim team is a great way for kids to build confidence in the water, develop strong swimming techniques and be part of a supportive team environment,” Alarcon
explains. “It’s also a fun way to stay active and engaged throughout the summer.”
Also open to children ages 4 through 10, the NBCC Swim Team starts on June 2 and wraps up on July 31.
“Our recreation programs are designed to create lasting memories and foster a sense of community among [our] members,” she adds. “Whether it’s through social leagues, summer camps or swim teams, we’re dedicated to providing opportunities that enhance the club experience for all ages.”
