We are in the seventh week of the first outbreak of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. Virus infections should peak next week and decline to almost nothing over the next six weeks. That’s the good news.

The bad news is, that if past virus pandemics are any guide, and if this one performs like most, there will be over the next 16 to 22 months two more explosions of cases. Often the second or third wave has double the cases of the first wave.

How should the United States and the world prepare for this unhappy prospect?

Ventilators can be manufactured rather quickly, as can N-95 masks, face shields, drugs, and disposable scrubs and gowns.

Indeed, every nation should be manufacturing and storing those things. No one should rely just on China, if for no other reason than a second outbreak in China. Being reliant on those supplies places the entire world at unnecessary risk.

But there is one important thing that is in absolute critical short supply: Trained ICU nurses.

It is true that the hospitals are furloughing registered nurses during the crisis. But this does not mean hospitals will be able to cope with another wave of COVID-19 cases. There are only so many ICU-level equipped rooms. And while the rooms can be added onto rather quickly just by spending money, the people needed to work in those rooms cannot be easily multiplied.

If we start with a licensed RN, it takes six to eight months to train them further for the ICU equipment, protocols and environment. This training is labor intensive. It requires a one-to-

with such a limited intellect, occupying the White House is very offensive to true patriots.

He’s a loathsome human being, and his incompetence, and deception have cost thousands of lives. His level of corruption makes Nixon look like an altar boy.

As a matter of national priority, every RN graduate from now until the crisis ends should be trained for the ICU. RNs under 35 should be encouraged and paid bonuses to be ICU-cross trained in this emergency.

We should focus more on our human capital — skilled health care professionals — to have enough RNs for the ICU when the second or third wave hits. If we don’t do this, the entire nation may look like New York, social distancing, shut downs and masks aside.

As we have learned, it is much better to be prepared than not.

FOSTER KIDS FACE AN ESPECIALLY DIRE SITUATION IN DEALING WITH CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

G

rowing up in foster care is hard enough during normal times — no love, guidance or support system, plus moving to a new home, school and community six, eight, even 10 times before reaching the age of 18.

The resulting fear of everything that life brings, plus the feeling that no one cares for them, gives children a me-against-the-world outlook.

Add in the level of uncertainty that comes with COIVID-19 and you have anxiety levels that run off the charts.

A Pasadena nonprofit, 50/50 Leadership serves former foster youth with workshops and mentoring on how to manage their money.

Some of these young people were already homeless before the novel coronavirus. Many had been incarcerated. Since the pandemic hit, many others have detached from the people around them, not just to be safe at home (if they have a home), but because of their history of being unloved.

The former foster youth in our program had someone who called them at least once a week for a whole year. This was a caring, compassionate mentor who listened and shared their experience and knowledge so when a young person was trying to decide whether to fly to visit a friend or pay the rent, they talked them through the options and the consequences of their decisions.

I am an accomplished businesswoman today, but I was irresponsible with my money for much of my life. As a girl growing up in the 1960s and ‘70s, I didn’t have to know about money, and when I applied for a credit card, all they wanted was my husband’s signature — even though I didn’t have a husband! Then, by the time I had a husband, I had been taught that he would take care of our finances, so I didn’t have to. Even after we divorced, the messages from my youth told me that there would always be someone to bail me out. There wasn’t. I ended up homeless and pregnant. That’s when I started to realize that maybe I needed to change my thinking and take on my own financial well-being.

When I learned that over 70 percent of prison inmates grew up in foster care, I knew that here was a problem worth 50/50 Leadership’s attention. Many of these inmates had the door slammed shut on them by the foster care system when they turned 18 with no money, no family, and no idea of how to get a job or find an apartment. Immediately homeless, they were easy prey for criminals and predators of all stripes.

I had experienced the hopeless, helpless feeling associated with being homeless, but I also had loving family and friends who were able to help me up and point me in the right direction. I knew enough to open a bank account rather than to use the predatory lenders and exorbitant check cashing services. I knew to dress up, have a pen with me and not chew gum during job interviews. I knew these things because I grew up in a loving, middle-class home whose members talked with me about such things and encouraged me to read and learn about them. I had a squad of cheerleaders encouraging me.

When I took a wrong turn in life, I had my family to draw on for help.

The young people we serve do not.

Today, with the devastation created by COVID-19, we have no idea what will happen to the economy, and whether there will be employment for the millions who are currently not working. A

s the San Gabriel Valley enters its second month of stay-at-home orders, thousands of jobless families across the region look for different ways to get meals on the table.

“Our vulnerable and at-risk clients, living in our bridge housing and supportive housing sites, as well as hundreds of our clients staying in motels and apartments, now depend on us for food,” Anne Miskey, CEO of Union Station, said in a press release. “In this time of crisis, we are showing how we live our core philosophy of meeting our clients ‘where they are at’ — physically and emotionally.”

Union Station provides food and in-kind donations such as hygiene kits, books and laundry supplies to its clients in the region.

Prior to the pandemic, they provided 2,200 meals weekly. At the beginning of the crisis, Union Station ramped up its production supplying families and individuals with 5,000 meals across the SGV. Now, as the crisis persists, the nonprofit increased its production to 8,000 meals.

“So far we have been able to meet the demand,” said spokesperson Dana Bean. “When we originally planned for this, we thought it would go on for a matter of weeks and now it’s looking like we’ll need to sustain this for the course of several months. We are absolutely still trying to collect more donations, more partnerships to make sure we can sustain this throughout the pandemic.”

Union Station provides these meals in three ways. First, the nonprofit sends 6,000 pre-packaged meals to clients living at Centennial Place, a single-room occupancy building converted from the old YMCA building on Holly Street, and various motels and apartments in the region. The other 2,000 meals are provided to individuals in need of emergency food and supply deliveries and the clients at the Adult and Family centers, who

receive three meals a day.

“It is all about time management,” food services manager Marissa Gamboa wrote about how she handles the increase in orders. “This means I have to organize everything and think it through the day before. I have to have a tight timeline and task list for everyone to get it all done.”

While food production rose, the amount of helping hands decreased. In order to comply with social distancing protocols, Union Station drastically reduced the number of volunteers allowed in the facility.

“Due to social distancing, I am only able to have four volunteers on-site at a time,” Gamboa wrote. “I am used to so many more helping hands. Our staff of three with a couple of people from the staffing agency have had to really step up and take it on.”

According to Bean, pre-pandemic the chefs typically received help from eight to 10 volunteers while preparing the 2,200 weekly meals in the kitchen. Bean described the volunteers as the “backbone” of Union Station.

“It certainly put on an additional strain,” she said. “ We’re being asked to do more with less volunteers and less space.”

Due to social distance protocols, the chefs and volunteers needed more space to work and prepare the food.

“We did have to create a mobile kitchen so that we had additional space to do the work,” Bean said. “We’ve created almost a mirror of our physical kitchen outside. [It] is tented with rented equipment so that we have enough space in order to work.”

Even with the shortage of volunteers and adjusting to working in a new environment, Gamboa strives to complete the meals for those in need.

“We have to do it. These people are counting on us. We can’t let them down.” n

PASADENA COPS COME UP WITH NEW PROCEDURES TO KEEP OFFICERS SAFE FROM COVID-19

I

n an effort to lower the risk of contracting COVID-19, the Pasadena Police Department has intitiated some new procedures aimed at keeping officers safe while dealing with the public.

“Other than the personal protective equipment, hand washing and no touching of the face, those types of things that were initially instituted, we’ve taken a few other steps in an attempt to avoid the spread or exposure to COVID-19,” said Lt. William Grisafe.

According to Grisafe, the department began sterilizing all of the vehicles that PPD uses, temperature checking all employees — both civilians and officers — before their shifts, and created a system for reporting and responding to crimes.

“When we get a call to our dispatch center, the dispatch will ask specific questions about COVID-related issues,” said Grisafe. “Our dispatchers are asking that information ahead of time so that our officers can approach the call appropriately.”

The dispatchers ask questions such as “Is anybody infected with COVID-19,” in order to inform the officers of the situation they are approaching. In addition to the preliminary questions dispatchers ask, PPD created a phone reporting unit for non-emergency calls.

“We’ve instituted a phone reporting unit that community members can call in and report certain types of crimes,” said Grisafe. “It’s not for emergency types of crimes. It’s for the types of crimes that officers can take the crime report over the phone … We call them property crimes.”

In addition to the new phone reporting unit, the department expanded its online services so residents can report additional crimes that do not need an immediate police response.

“Violent crimes are not the types of crimes that you can report online, nor that you want to report over the phone [reporting unit],” Grisdafe said.

Grisafe explained that crimes such as burglary, price gouging and vandalism are examples of crimes that should be reported through the phone and online service. However, violent crimes such as rape, murder and kidnappings will still warrant and receive a physical police response.

Employees responsible for phone reports are not sworn-in police officers but civilians, Grisafe said.

“The primary reason is to minimize the exposure to the virus,” said Grisafe. “Secondarily, we prefer having officers in the field, and if we can have a designated report person it does free up [officers].” n

SAFETY’S COSTS VILLANUEVA TO CLOSE ALTADENA AND MARINA DEL REY SHERIFF STATIONS TO BALANCE BUDGET

n an effort to save money, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva announced plans to close sheriff stations in Altadena and Marina del Rey. Law enforcement duties of the two stations will be be picked up by the sheriff’s Crescenta Valley Station and South Los Angeles Station, respectively.

Villanueva told the Los Angeles Times that deputies will still patrol those communities. However, a captain, field training officer and administrative positions will be eliminated.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, one who frequently supports the often controversial sheriff, told Pasadena Now that Villanueva had other ways to balance his budget.

“The chief executive office has provided the Sheriff’s Department with guidance and suggestions for appropriate budget cuts that would not impact public safety or community service, such as limited overtime and scaling

back academy classes,” Barger told the online news magazine.

“I am disappointed that instead of more sensible adjustments, he is responding by eliminating sheriff’s stations, including in Altadena, an unincorporated area that I represent,”Barger said.

The two stations will be closed July 1, the first day of the next fiscal year.

“Due to the fact the Board of Supervisors and chief executive officer have intentionally failed to provide a budget which meets the true needs of the department, we are forced to make deep cuts in order to continue providing the basic functions of public safety to our communities,” Villanueva said in a memo obtained by the LA Times.

Leaders of the two unions that represent Sheriff’s Department personnel said they learned of the cuts Monday.

With the county’s jail population down by 5,000 inmates, the supervisors urged Villanueva to balance the department’s $3.5 billion budget by cutting staff and overtime, according to the Times.

“Since last year, the Sheriff’s Department has run a substantial deficit that the county is unable to maintain. These considerable fiscal issues, led predominantly by overtime costs and legal settlements, have become even more pronounced given the financial challenges we are experiencing during COVID-19,” Barger told Pasadena Now. According to the Times, Villanueva said he would save $12 million with closure of the stations, which he said could remain open in some capacity. n 05.07.20 | PASADENA WEEKLY 7

JOHN HOPKINS OFFERS A COMMUNITY HUB WITH HIS ECLECTIC, ALL-VEGETARIAN SHOP O HAPPY DAYS

F

or more than 40 years, an eclectic health food store has served as a community hub in Altadena — a place where people meet, share ideas and enjoy fresh soup and lunch, all vegetarian, of course.

It began in 1977, when a little shop appeared on the north side of Woodbury Road, near Los Robles Avenue, right along the unincorporated community's border with the city of Pasadena.

I remember entering the quaint shop, with various herbs dangling from the ceiling and hanging on the walls, and featuring fresh produce and health food products. The friendly proprietor would show me the produce lists, pointing out that his prices were cheaper than co-ops. I wouldn’t have known if his prices were cheaper, since I never really paid attention to such things. I was just a local guy looking for something good to eat for lunch.

The shopkeeper, John Hopkins, got started in the health food and food coop business a few years earlier, when he was a student to Cal State, LA and trying to cut costs with a group of other students he resided with. One of his roommates moved out and left behind a copy of “Let's Eat Right to Stay Fit,” a book by Adelle Davis, which further inspired Hopkins to stay on the path he was on.

Over time, Hopkins learned how to bake bread, make quality soup and promote healthful living. “I knew that wheat bread was good for you,” he once told me, “but I didn’t yet know why.”

While he was painting the shop he had just moved into on Woodbury Road, Hopkins was playing the radio and heard the words “Oh, Happy Days,” in a gospel song of the same name. It was then that he decided this was what he would call his shop.

Within six years he moved further into Altadena, on Lake Avenue, just across from Elliot Middle School. There he believed his business would do better because of greater exposure on the busy thoroughfare. After another six years, he had an opportunity to move again, this time just north another block to the store’s current location at 2283 Lake Avenue.

“Our present location is great because now we have parking in the rear, and plenty of room for people to sit inside and outside,” Hopkins recently noted.

Another Time Upon entering O Happy Days, people are greeted with local newspapers and magazines to read, along with a nearby bulletin board with information on all that was happening in this quaint foothill community. It feels like a throwback to the late 1960s, assuming one is old enough to remember that era.

According to Jane Tsong, artist and conservation planner, “Stepping into O Happy Days feels like you’re stepping into a different world, where values and people, and even the speed of time are different.”

There are tables in the middle of the shop where diners wait for a bowl of Hopkins' incredibly delicious soup of the day. Often it's lentil, which I have had many times over the years. Though I hesitate to say this, it’s better than my departed mother's home cooking. (Sorry mom.)

The walls are lined with herbs and economically-priced products, and the upper walls are like an eccentric art museum with pictures, statues, juicers, paintings and diverse political statements. One poster lists famous vegetarians, with the last one on the list being Hopkins himself.

“We promote a vegetarian lifestyle here, and we believe that our efforts will help contribute to a sustainable world,” Hopkins states. “I’ve always tried to make health foods affordable and provide information for all our customers,” he says, while answering a customer’s question about different vitamins.

O Happy Days has often been described as one of a few places in Altadena where someone can go and feel a sense of community.

“It’s important to contribute to the feeling of community and to encourage people to sit and socialize,” explains Hopkins. “Anyone can sit in our chairs, and there is no pressure to buy anything.”

Winning Over Skeptics O Happy Days actually has a Poet Laureate, local resident Seven Dhar. According to Dhar, “O Happy Days is more than a store. It's a meeting place, a center of radical thought and subversive conversation, ecology, New Age teachings, herbalism, holistic health concepts, and lots of kombucha…”

Hopkins is a rare, old-school proprietor who makes you feel at home, even when he’s under pressure. It is a unique atmosphere for a store that has earned its good name from everyone who goes there.

Does anyone ever have complaints about O Happy Days? Yes, when I was there recently and a man in line ahead of me was openly complaining — but with a smile. He said John needed to hire another worker to run the cash register while John carefully and slowly poured a bowl of soup. But the same man is a regular customer, perhaps realizing that sometimes quality does not come quickly.

According to attorney Philip Koebel, who once ran for mayor of Pasadena, “John has a genuine one-on-one relationship with everyone who walks into the store. If you don't talk with John, then you haven't really been there. I started going to O Happy Days regularly because it's the only place around to get a decent vegetarian/vegan meal every day. It's like John is my personal chef.”

Local resident Michael Shermer, who is the publisher of Skeptic magazine, executive director of the Skeptics Society, and Presidential Fellow at Chapman University, is another fan of O Happy Days.

“For a quarter century now I have been enjoying the healthiest foods on the planet at John’s O Happy Days store and restaurant,” says Shermer. “John is an Altadena treasure and his outfit represents everything we love about our city: healthy living, honest friendship, and good eats! These days, Gen Z'ers like to purchase products with a good cause behind them, but baby boomer John was way ahead of his time when he turned food into a political and environmental cause.

hat I don’t miss: Taking a picture with my phone of every dish in front of me and then procrastinating interminably over posting on Instagram.

What I do miss: Sitting in restaurants, chatting with working chefs. And writing about food!

I miss restaurants!

As wistful as we get about the now lost age when we could join a crowded room to enjoy a meal together, the fact is that food delivery through various apps and services was already a booming, robust business before the economy locked down over the pandemic.

The phenomenon of “ghost kitchens” was an increasingly viable business model for some chefs and restaurant concepts for the last several years. Most usually, a ghost or “virtual” kitchen is a restaurant brand and menu that exists only for take-out and delivery ordering, without any on-site dining area. Ghost kitchens can also serve as local delivery hubs for established restaurants and chain operations to provide delivery service in locations remote from their brick and mortar operations.

Pasadena is the headquarters and first location of Kitchen United, a novel two-year old start-up that provides ghost kitchen space, as well as delivery service for multiple restaurant brands from a single kitchen venue. The Pasadena location — Kitchen United Mix — opened in February 2018, in

the former space of the Cordon Bleu cooking school’s student run cafe on the corner of Madison Avenue and Green Street.

The concept has been successful enough to allow expansion to outlets in Chicago and Scottsdale, Arizona with the next opening planned for Austin, Texas. Last summer, a new round of investment from RXR Realty totaling $40 million is earmarked for expansion and development in New York City and its tri-state area specifically.

In Pasadena, at Kitchen United Mix there are currently 16 “restaurants” prepping food for delivery: Brothers Desserts; Plant B; Bad Ass Breakfast Burrito; Wendy’s; Lucille’s Smokehouse BBQ; Bad Mutha Clucka; Amazebowls; Freiburger; Canter’s Deli; Grilled Cheese Heaven; The Halal Guys; Mama Musubi; Rori’s Artisanal Creamery; Samlor Thai Street Food; Tokyo Riso; and Dog Haus Market. Canter’s was in the first group of brands when the location opened and allows the iconic deli to offer fresh delivery in our area.

The last entry from our own Dog Haus brand provides bulk purchase and delivery of their signature sausages, buns, etc.

hen COVID-19 is finally defeated, either by social distancing, a vaccine, or a combination of efforts, celebrations around the world will go on for weeks, if not months.

And when that time comes, Noor Ballroom at Paseo Colorado in midtown Pasadena will likely be the location of many of the parties that are likely already being planned in the greater Pasadena area for that time.

Right now, however, Noor, like many other businesses that have been deemed nonessential, is closed.

ghost brands delivering out of Kitchen United Mix. Why? For an established operation like Dog Haus, ghost kitchen brands allow for “capitallight” local expansion with a variety of different menu concepts appealing to different local market segments. Without a long-term lease, requisite insurance, equipment purchase and rental, utility costs and front-of-house staff payroll, the potential profit margin is significantly improved over the “razor-thin” — 6 to 7 percent average — profit margins of conventional brick and mortar restaurant operations (prelockdown).

Besides providing brand expansion and extended delivery capacity for established operations, the ghost kitchen model also offers much less risk to independent startups seeking an initial foothold in a highly competitive market like Pasadena.

It’s also worth noting that by clicking the “For Restaurants” button on the Kitchen United Mix website home page and then a click on the “Insights” button, a rather robust trove of resources and information is revealed. These include two webinars posted on April 13, in the midst of the lockdown: “How to Optimize for Take-out & Delivery During COVID-19” and “Understanding the 5 Steps to Apply for Federal Restaurant Relief Funding.”

As a local eater, you can order directly through the Kitchen United website or through any of the extant delivery service apps that are engaged directly by the resident brands (Grubhub, Postmates, etc.) That said, you can also order online for pickup onsite or just show up and order with a tablet monitor interface in the, well, ghostly lobby. I dropped in one afternoon — masked and gloved — to see for myself. Besides three snickering stoners ganged in a corner without social distance waiting for a take-out munchies order, there was only the back counter bustle of deliveries being prepped.

(Did I mention I miss restaurants?)

I spoke briefly with Priscilla Hernandez, who

was working the counter. When asked about the rate of business at Kitchen United Mix since the lockdown, she quickly replies, “I think we’re busier …!” Given the fact that delivery and takeout is the only game left, it makes sense that the brands operating out of Kitchen United Mix were well-positioned to face the altered reality of the lockdown.

Of the three Silicon Valley tech-wonk entrepreneurs who founded Kitchen United — John Miller, Harry Tsao, and Massimo Noja De Marco — only Noja De Marco has a background in restaurants, having run and operated Wolfgang Puck Catering and Events, as well as the food and beverage department of the Ritz Carlton hotel, in addition to trade consulting. (GV — formerly Google Ventures — provided an initial $10 million in funding, by the way.)

However, there is some actual local color here as well.

The CEO of Kitchen United is Jim Carroll. A longtime resident of nearby Montrose, Carroll also owns and operates Town Kitchen and Grill in Montrose, a 100-seat New American restaurant, which opened five years ago. An independent restaurateur who runs a growing national chain of ghost kitchens…? There has to be a story here and maybe some answers to the questions surrounding the looming uncertainty clouding the prospects for independent restaurants in the area.

Asked to submit questions to Carroll for Q&A via email, my exchange with him and commentary will have to wait until next week.

We will also have a conversation with Geoff Goodman, the CEO of Fresh Brothers, the next tenant to launch operations at Kitchen United Mix, starting this Friday.

In the meantime, Noor, also not unlike numerous other businesses, is using its time to give back to the community that made them a successful enterprise over the past decade; doling out free cups of soup to go to people in need and to a number of local nonprofit organizations, said Robert Shahnazarian, Noor's senior vice president of sales and marketing.

“Every Friday from 3 to 5 p.m. we have provided over 1,200 servings of nutritious plant-based soups to those in need,” wrote Shahnazarian, who runs the family business with the help of his wife Maggie and brother Sarkis.

“In addition, we have delivered our soups to the Ronald McDonald House, Hathaway-Sycamore Child and Family Services, and the Pasadena Senior Center,” he continued, adding Noor has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to cover the $5,000 a week needed to pay for the program, which started on March 27.

It was at that time that Shanazarian said Noor opened its commercial kitchen and called in as many staff members they could afford to pay. They outfitted the kitchen with a medical grade filtration system and equipped staff with

face masks and gloves to begin the Soup-To-Go program.

“It was our promise to our community to continue this program for as long as it was needed and here we are five weeks later still keeping our promise,” said Shanazarian. “The soup that we are serving isn’t ordinary soup. It is plant-based, and made with completely fresh and natural immune– boosting ingredients.”

So far, the Noor crew has made and donated vegetable and barley soup, vegetarian chili, vegetarian borscht soup, tomato and rice soup, potato and leek soup, green pea and spinach soup and minestrone soup to thousands of people in need, along with supplying soup to local nonprofits dealing with children and the elderly.

“We are doing our best to help keep our local community fed and healthy but our Soup-To-Go program desperately needs funds in order to continue,” Shahnazarian wrote on the ballroom's website.

• ARTS & CULTURE • A NEVER-ENDING STRUGGLE TV SERIES LOOKS AT HOW ASIAN AMERICANS ARE VIEWED AS ‘FOREVER FOREIGNERS’

n the 1980s, Altadena resident Renee Tajima-Peña documented a tragedy that galvanized the Asian American community. By January of 1989, she was caught up in the excitement of the Academy Awards as co-director (with Christine Choy) of the Oscar-nominated documentary, “Who Killed Vincent Chin?”

Fast forward to last January. Tajima-Peña was anticipating a celebratory week in May as one of the producers of the five-part PBS limited series “Asian Americans,” but recent events have raised anti-Asian sentiments and most events for Asian Pacific American Heritage Month have been canceled. The series she produced for PBS, “Asian Americans,” now becomes the focal point of attention as Asian Americans contend with fear.

In a recent phone conversation, Tajima-Peña noted, “We wanted to look at tipping points of American history, not just Asian-American history, and what role Asian Americans played during those moments.” In the series, she explained, “we look at history through people’s stories.”

The series is in some ways a follow up to the PBS “American Experience” film “The Chinese Exclusion Act,” which was first broadcast in 2018 and is currently available to stream. Recent events have given more meaning to Tajima-Peña’s Vincent Chin documentary, and the series is a whirlwind tour through Asian American history.

The first two episodes of the series, “Breaking Ground” and “A Question of Loyalty,” air on Monday, May 11, and then will be available to stream. The remaining three episodes air on Tuesday, May 12, and are titled “Good Americans,” “Generation Rising” and “Breaking Through.” Check local listings. Episodes “Good Americans” and “Generation Rising” have already premiered as part of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival Virtual Showcase last week.

Tajima-Peña appeared on a special panel which streamed and is still available on the showcase’s Facebook page.

Although the series begins with the St. Louis World’s Fair and Chinese laborers building the western half of the Transcontinental Railroad (“Breaking Ground”), the first Asians came to the US much earlier. Most infamously, the the Siamese (Thai) American conjoined twins Chang and Eng Bunker, who first toured from 1829 to 1839, settled down in North Carolina and had kids — some of whom fought in the American Civil War. They weren’t the only people of Asian descent fighting during that conflict.

The series reminds viewers that Asian Pacific Islanders like Filipinos were brought to the World’s Fair to demonstrate degrees of civilization, an illustration of the stratification proposed by Social Darwinism. Despite their hard work and high rate of death, Chinese railroad workers were barred from the ritual joining of the rails at Promontory Summit, Utah and were not in any of the commemorative photos. Instead of Ellis Island, immigrants entering the US on the West Coast were processed through Angel Island, in San Francisco Bay, and as the entrants were predominately nonwhite they faced racism, making Angel Island a place to fear.

Yet, despite this racism, people like Los Angeles-born Anna Mae Wong and Japanese immigrant Sessue Hayakawa had limited success in the newly created Hollywood. As talkies came in during the late 1920s, and “Yellow Peril”-ism increased, “yellow face” had become the solution, resulting in two Europeans (Paul Muni and Luise Rainer) playing the leads as Chinese peasants who suddenly rise to wealth and position in the 1937 “The Good Earth.” Yellow face became a common way of depicting Asians on film.

“A Question of Loyalty” focuses on how the anti-Japanese sentiments led to the Japanese-American internment and caused a fissure in one large Japanese-Amer-

ican family, with the eldest son deciding to live in Japan.

Korean, Chinese, Filipino and other Japanese Americans contributed to the war effort, even as they were facing antiAsian prejudice.

“Good Americans” looks at the rise of the “model minority” stereotype with the return of the Nisei (Japanese American) 442nd combat troop. In 1952, Maine selected a widowed Chinese woman, Toy Len Goon, whose husband had been a World War I army vet, as their Mother of the Year. McCarthyism (195054), however, would lead to scrutiny, surveillance and even deportation of Chinese Americans after Mao Zedong expelled Chiang Kai-shek and formed the People’s Republic of China in 1949.

“Generation Rising” looks at how Asian Americans were involved in important civil rights protests in California (Larry Itliong and the Delano Farm Workers Strike, the Third World Liberation Front at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley) and how three Asian Americans felt during their service in the Vietnam War. “Breaking Through” begins with the murder of a Chinese-American man, Vincent Chin, during a time of high anti-Japanese sentiment in Detroit. That 1982 slaying again made it clear that all ethnic Asian Americans suffered; when one ethnic group was targeted, all suffered. Asian Americans have contributed to the rise of technology in California, notably in Silicon Valley. Yet, as the panel was able to note, anti-Chinese feeling is on the rise and Asian Americans are again made to feel like forever foreigners.

Like any survey documentary, these five hours only provide a glimpse into Asian-American history and the collective experience of those people. There are some factual errors, such as the claim that both Muni and Rainer won Academy Awards. Muni was not even nominated, but won a Best Actor in 1936 playing Louis Pasteur in “The Story of Louis Pasteur.” Additionally, in a brief animation segment which seems to represent Chinatown, there seems to be Japanese writing in the background. For the most part, West Asians are largely ignored. And talking heads are too often identified generically as “writer” or “historian,” without providing the Asian-American history neophyte insight to their areas of authority, although some of them have personal connections to the stories told.

Still, after covering Asian-American issues for over a decade, I still learned something new about important people and incidents. With the current level of xenophobia toward ethnic Asians and the considerable Asian-American population in the San Gabriel Valley, “Asian Americans” is a must-see. n “Asian Americans” airs at 8 p.m. Monday, May 11, and 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 12.

As Fela Kuti’s drummer, Tony Allen was a hugely influential Afrobeat architect; trumpeter Hugh Masekela was an international icon of civil rights and South African jazz. The two legends discussed collaborating for decades before convening with producer Nick Gold in 2010, but not until after Masekela’s death in 2018 did Allen and Gold finish those recordings with a crew of British jazz players (Ezra Collective keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones, bassist Mutale Chashi, tenor saxophonist Steve Williamson, vibraphonist Lewis Wright). More than an improvisatory jam, “Rejoice” is a righteous tribute to Masekela and Allen, who died April 30 in Paris. Masekela’s soulful chants and succinct trumpet solos are undergirded by Allen’s sublimely elastic rhythms and spatial mastery. No brooding requiems here. PAM TILLIS, Looking for a Feeling (Stellar Cat): HHH½

The title track sets the tone of the country veteran’s 11th studio album with a relaxed groove and earned wisdom (“Who can point a finger/ Who can say what’s wrong/ Oh we all get high and low/ Turning over every stone/ Looking for a feeling”). Like bittersweet stunners “Last Summer’s Wine” and “The Scheme of Things,” “Dolly 1969,” and the percussion-textured “Burning Star,” its loamy feel evokes ’70s country-soul more than Tillis’ slick ’90s hits, and is a natural fit for her expressive, chocolate-y tones. pamtillis.com

CALEB LANDRY JONES, The Mother Stone (Sacred Bones): HHH

Taking cues from film, the actor/musician’s ambitious solo debut introduces its carny funhouse world with cinematic instrumental “Flag Day” before seguing into the psychedelic title track. The remaining 14 tracks reveal a strong pop sensibility, a flair for grand arrangements, chameleonic vocals, and more ideas than patience; unlike, say, Portland rocker Kyle Craft, Jones hasn’t yet synthesized classic influences (the Beatles, Bowie, Pink Floyd) into melodic hooks and sharp songwriting — his vision’s more daring than focused. The Sun Valley native continues to demonstrate a knack for strong pop hooks, most notably with infectious lead single “Red Flag,” a giddy evocation of budding romance. Williams, who got her start busking at the Glendale Marketplace, and producer/ husband Ross Garren cradle her precise, tone-perfect delivery in dreamy, sometimes carnival-esque arrangements of tack and toy pianos, saw, horns and strings (“Something Sweet,” “Skin and Bones,” closing ditty “Fffun”). The highlight is “Dust,” a deceptively simple declaration of belief: “Take my hand, you’re my brother/ We were born in the same way/ You live on one side and I’m on the other/ But we’ll all be dust someday.” chelseawilliams.com

RUTHIE FOSTER BIG BAND, Live at the Paramount (Blue Corn): HHH½

The Grammy-nominated soul-folk powerhouse traded her usual lean stage setup for three backup singers and 14 musicians, including a 10-piece horn section, for this Austin concert recorded last year. Foster built her reputation on live shows; this is her second live release, following 2011’s grittier “Live at Antone’s.” At a time when live music is scarce on the ground, it’s rejuvenating to hear her transform opening anthem “Brand New Day” (given a New Orleans flavor here), gospel traditional “Death Came A-Knockin’ (Travelin’ Shoes),” Sean Staples’ “Joy Comes Back” and jazz standard “Mack the Knife” into heartlifting testimonials to hope and resilience. Colombia-based DJ/producer Ben Woods’ latest foray as Bosq is a four-track palate cleanser of disco, African and funk grooves. Longtime collaborator Kaleta, frontman for Brooklyn’s Afrofunk ensemble Super Yamba Band, can be heard chanting on the title track and “Omo Iya,” and the percussively insistent “Mambue” benefits from the leathered calls of Son Palenque founder Justo Valdez, a bridge-building legend of AfroColombian music. Throbbing closer “El Carriquí” is one of three tracks with a horn section borrowed from Bogotá’s LaBOA, who help make this virtual house party one that ends too soon. bosqmusic.com

It’s been six years since the Austin quartet’s “Angel,” and the thickly fuzz-toned guitars and reverb-drenched vocals of their fourth album seem to channel the conflicting emotions of this particular moment. “Somehow I crash landed in Bible Belt America/ Send help, I’m losing sense of who I am,” guitarist/ frontman Nate Grace calls during angsty opener “Middle America.” “Hollywood” follows like a country-dusted respite, its dreamlike melody swathed in calming guitars and hazy harmonies, while the “One step forward/ Three steps back” sigh of “Grieving Song” reaches for solace in acceptance.
