SPORT PROMOTION & MARKETING “Who is promoting the sport we care about?”

Do any of you still remember back when Wednesday morning meant getting up 10 minutes earlier than usual, so that you had time to stop off at the newsagents on the way to work to pick up the latest copy of Motorcycle News?

I only thought about this the other week, as for the first �me in years I saw somebody reading a copy and wondered when the world had changed.

It was actually Phil Pages brother David who was si�ng on the terrace in the Spanish sunshine reading a feature about some hideous three wheeled monstrosity called a Yamaha Niken GT. I took one look at the picture and felt a li�le bit of sick arrive at the back of my throat!

OK, I get sidecars of the racing kind as it’s the racing that makes it OK. As I once said to Roy Hanks at an ACU Road Race Commi�ee Mee�ng “We need to remember that we have to provide training for sidecars as well.” We were discussing the ACU CTC-BRA Courses at the �me. “Some people want to start racing on three wheels........ We all know it’s wrong, but some people just have deviant tendancies!”

Relax, I was only (half) joking as I have raced sidecars myself in the past. Anyway, back to the MCN;“Where are the club sport pages?” I asked in my naivety. I remembered those old days of flipping past all the road bike rubbish and ripping out the centre sec�on where the real bikes lived – racing bikes, club news, sports reports, race mee�ngs this weekend and even club sport write ups by Norrie White & Co. He flicked a couple of pages and showed me a picture of a grinning

It’s not that I don’t like Moto-GP, I do, it’s just that it isn’t the real world racing that gets my blood fizzing.

Moto-GP has followed Formula 1 down the (very commercially successful) path of being almost totally out of touch with its roots.

You can’t buy those bikes and even if you could, there’s nowhere to race them. It’s a different sport and so commercially saturated that you’d have to be living under a stone not to know the result of the race within 5 minutes of the chequered flag going out.

“Not that stuff, I’ve already watched that and read about it on the internet in painful detail. That all happened 10 days ago! Where’s the real stuff?”

Dave looked at me sadly as though he were a Holland & Barre� sales assistant and I were asking for 10

grams of Horse or Crack Cocaine.

I was obviously a lost cause and he went back to reading a thrilling feature about heated gloves........

So, Motorcycle News has been lost to the Rossi fan boys, “Polite” vest wearers, closet trike owners and the leather tassled brigade.

I went home and did a quick search on some of the other old print publica�ons I had enjoyed reading as a youngster.

Motorcycle Mechanics – gone, Motorcycle Racer – gone.

Fast Bikes, Performance Bikes, Superbike Magazine...... all shadows of the old stuff.

All seemed to be intent on regurgita�ng endless “Which 600?” features or “Living with a Naked Tourer” – (The naked tourer got me for a moment, until I realised they weren’t talking about Taylor Momsen).

They were all clones of each other, seemingly unable to print

anything that might upset any of the bike manufacturers for fear of jeopardising their adver�sing revenue. Yet even worse, everything I looked at had already been done to death on the internet anyway, there was nothing new, nothing to see and ul�mately nothing to buy.

My mind went back to a conversa�on I had with Aaron League at the NEC Motorcycle Show and I realised that I hadn’t been listening properly. He had basically told me all of the above, albeit in far more poli�cally correct terms, and given that as the main mo�va�on behind launching a print version of the excellent UK Clubsport website.

I did say at the �me that we wished him and Zoe Burn the very best of luck, but I privately wondered whether they would be capable of producing something that was viable or that had enough demand.

They send me a copy every month, but I have to confess that I have only ever skim read them (mainly due to trying to keep my newly bought 200 year old Spanish shack from falling in on my head).

My accidental brush with all of those other publica�ons made me curious about how Aaron & Zoe might be ge�ng on with their UK Clubsport monthly magazine.

Yesterday I took the �me to dig them out and have a proper look through them all.

I lost over 5 hours of my life, but in a good way, because I actually found that there was a lot of very interes�ng well thought out stuff in there. Stuff I hadn’t read elsewhere on the internet, and that wasn’t simply re-hashed from other peoples ar�cles. No clever soundbites, no duplicate photographs, just good honest motorcycle sport journalism.

The reports are relevant and they cover the details of events that you might never know about if you weren’t actually there at the circuit.

There is no bias on the repor�ng, just well wri�en factually based stuff with enough personal detail to make you engage with the content.

Some of the Technical pieces reminded me of the days when I was involved with helping John Robinson

and Brian Crighton on a couple of their adventures with Motorcycle Mechanics Magazine back in the 1970s. Well wri�en, informa�ve and not so technically complex that you ever felt it was going over the head of the average reader.

OK, so I’m a convert, but I’m just one person. In order to keep producing the quality of content that features the kind of racing we are all interested in, this magazine needs subscribers. Zoe and Aaron are racking up huge mileages and significant expenses in order to give us all what we want, in addi�on to enormous effort. I understand the need to have a good subscrip�on base because it assists with forward

planning for print runs, delivery schedules and a host of other stuff that gets ever more cost effec�ve with greater volume.

I urge you to take out a years subscription, it’s just £45.99 and in the real world that is simply peanuts. You’ll not get a decent oil & filter change for your race van for much less and if you subscribe you’ll probably gain more than that if you make use of the special offers UK Clubsport nego�ate on a regular basis.

Support the people who not only support you, but also support the clubs, the photographers and ul�mately the baseline of our sport.

The Thundersport 500 Elite, Sportsman and Seniors championships are the absolute cheapest possible way to go road racing on this planet. A whole race package can be picked up for less than the price of a top of the range helmet, boots & gloves. That said, the racing is hard and close - bordering on the frantic at times. The talent of a racer needn’t be judged by the value of the bike he/she happens to be sitting on, some of the most gifted riders in the country ride these humble parallel twins. The predominant choice of bike here is the Honda CB500, but once you’ve watched a couple of these races you’ll never look at one of these staid commuter bikes in quite the same way again. The 500 Seniors championship caters for riders of 40 years of age or older on 1st March of any given racing season.

Some of these lads are fulfilling a long term ambition to race that they simply didn’t have the resources to satisfy when they were younger. When you see the level of skill displayed by some of them, you have to think that they could have made a pretty good living at it if circumstances had been different.

The Sportsman championship caters for riders at an earlier stage of their racing careers than the Elite riders and is also very closely fought.

To win in any of these classes is a real achievement.

Seeing Yasutomo Nagai, Scott Russell, Giancarlo Fallappa, Aaron Slight and Anthony Gobert not only backing it in on high speed sections, but also squirming out of corners whilst the chassis tied itself in knots may not have been as fast as modern Moto-GP bikes - but it looked a whole lot faster and infinitely more exciting.

Golden Era Superbikes was our version of this classic era of motorcycle racing, before 1000cc across the frame 4 cylinder bikes displaced the “real” Superbikes of the 750cc era. Just looking at these homologation specials on their paddock stands invokes memories of that era and when they fire up, the chatter of the flatslides just makes me grin - I can’t help it. Then we welcomed the GP1 Classic bikes to the grid and they proved to be an excellent addition, being extremely well matched with the older Superbikes. Tyres on both classes are any make, any pattern, any type - including slicks. Rims are also free and even carbon wheels can be used. As you can see from the photo above, the Thundersport GP1 Sport & Freshman riders also race on this grid. These less experienced riders learn valuable racecraft from the experienced riders on the older machines.

It’s been very well documented that the worlds longest running one make championship – the Superteen Challenge – has been the launch pad for a multitude of British and World Championship racers. That was no accident, but it wasn’t exactly rocket science either. The premise for developing young talent isn’t really solely about the machinery they are using, the important thing – the only really important thing in fact – is getting the entire pool of talent in the same place, at the same time. Any of us could be conceited and say that we are teaching them, but there is no point in lying about it – these youngsters are teaching each other. They look at another rider of similar age, ability and size to themselves and just think “If he can do that, so can I!” and once they’ve made it happen once, it goes straight into their skill Team Machine cc Class set. The more kids you can get together on track at the same Warrington MOT Centre KTM 390 ST time, the more opportunity there is for them all to learn at a faster GF Racing KTM 390 ST rate.

When Casey Stoners parents RS Racing Academy Kawasaki 300 ST brought him half way across the world to pitch him against HEC Decorating Yamaha 300 ST the other youngsters in the Superteens, it started a chain Rutters Race Team Kawasaki 300 ST of events that culminated in Cal Crutchlow (also a Superteen that Hanks Racing Kawasaki 300 ST year) becoming the first British premier class Grand-Prix winner The Fire Place KTM 390 ST since Barry Sheene.

If you think that is the end of the NL Components Kawasaki 300 ST line, you’re not looking at the true picture though. There are a Woodland KTM 390 ST whole host of riders still working their way through the system that Samper Installations Kawasaki 300 ST have the potential to replicate that success and perhaps go even Jayda Howe Racing Aprilia 125 ST further. Cal was a Superteen in 2000 and went on to win the Kam Dixon Racing Yamaha 300 ST championship in 2001, so there are another 14 years worth of CW Racing Aprilia 125 ST exactly that kind of talent already in the pipeline. OK, so Casey only Arscott Racing Kawasaki 300 ST took 7 years after leaving the Superteens to get into a position Rendell Racing Aprilia 450 ST where he was able to take his first Moto-GP race win, whereas it’s Bespoke Bathing Co. KTM 390 ST taken Cal 14 years, but I think that just goes to prove the point that Bespoke Bathing Co. Kawasaki 300 ST there is no great rush as British riders tend to benefit from a little RS Racing Academy Kawasaki 300 ST more time in the development stages. Rory Skinner, Charlie Thundersport GP3 Superteens Points Nesbitt, Max Cook and Lewis Rollo – make a note of their names as 1 Joe Talbot 523 they are all on the same upward 2 Kam Dixon 371 escalator that brought Cal, Bradley 3 Jack Bednarek 327 Smith, Sam Lowes, Danny Kent, 4 Harris Beech 320 Danny Webb and Alex Lowes onto the world stage.

The world of motorcycle racing can be an intimidating place for newcomers. If you want to start on a 600cc machine, you’ll quickly discover that everyone else on the grid is a budding Axe-Murderer in the making. In order to ease the transition into this fiercely competitive category, we created the “Pre-National Sport 600” class for riders who have yet to gain a National Licence. It was originally made up of a mix of pure novices and riders who are generally in their second season of racing. It tends to work slightly better than a pure “Novice” or “Rookie” grid because the new riders have some slightly more experienced riders around them that they can learn from rather than the fastest newcomer being left to his own devices.

This is hugely beneficial when it comes to things like lapping slower riders, or dealing with temporary course changes such as lack of adhesion flags being utilised on parts of the track.

Of course those things can be learnt by trial and error, but having someone who has done it before just ahead of you takes the guesswork out of it. We also have a “Freshman” category within this race, which is for riders on a Novice licence with very little experience.The bikes themselves are pretty much the same specification machines as those on the Sportsman Elite grid, but at this learning stage of the process any small differences are immaterial. As with all 600cc production based formulae, the Pre-National 600 Sport & Freshman classes races on “Road-Legal” treaded tyres unless a “Wet Race” is declared, in which case tyre choice is free.

There are no restrictions on the brand of tyre used and all major manufacturers are represented.

CAREFUL WITH THAT AXE EUGENE! These bad boys are the most sophisticated and powerful bits of kit in the paddock.

When you start racing, everyone secretly wants one, but the first time you ride one in anger reminds you very forcefully that they can bite!

It is a reminder of how fast technology has advanced in just a few years when you consider that all of the bikes on this grid have more advanced electronics than even the most sophisticated Grand Prix machines had before the 4-stroke Moto-GP era started. It’s even more amazing to consider that if a decent standard club rider were on one of these machines in any Grand Prix before around 1991, he would probably have won! That is a little factoid that both astounds and offends people like me that grew up with Wayne Rainey and Eddie Lawson as their racing heroes (because NOBODY could have smoked the tyres like they did - could they?)................

This race has 2 categories within one race - all riders contest the main Thundersport GP1 Elite category and that can be won outright by a Sportsman rider if he is good enough.

All categories of GP1 rider may use any tyre, slick or treaded and even 16.5 inch rims if desired. There is an open tyre policy in most classes at Thundersport GB and Dunlop, Avon, Continental and the other brands all put a lot of effort into getting their men onto the podium. If one brand dominates the podium, the rest of the riders very swiftly switch to that brand.

This is a VERY big marketing exercise, because over 1,200 tyres will be used at pretty much every Thundersport GB meeting.

WHEN TRACTION CONTROL WAS ALL IN THE WRIST ACTION! As with the corresponding Superbike class, some of the most memorable race action came from a time before the electronics geeks interferred with the direct relationship between the twist grip and the throttle slides. The term “Mad Axe-Murderers” was actually coined by James Whitham when he did a couple of Wild Card rides in the World Supersport Championship and watching it from trackside you simply couldn’t argue the accuracy of that label.

If Ghengis Khan rode a motorcycle it would have been an R6 or ZX6RR from this era (he might have struggled getting his helmet through Technical Control, but who’s going to argue with him?).

Golden Era Supersport is our version of this classic era of motorcycle racing, before traction control took over from pure fearless determination. These classes are not PreInjection or Pre-2000, they are tailored to the bikes that actually raced in that iconic era. The technical regulations allow all and any modifications that were used in period and ban anything that wasn’t around or allowed at the time.

Tyres are any make, any pattern, any type - as long as they have a road legal designation. Full wets are permitted only when a Wet Race has been declared.

Modern Superstock 600 specification bikes are now so good that what was almost unthinkable 10 years ago is now true. In the right hands, a Superstock bike could set a lap time good enough for a front row start in British Supersport. Bearing in mind the ÂŁ25,000 price gap between the two bikes, that is an amazing testament to how closely the manufacturers are able to replicate what their race departments are learning from racing and putting it into their production lines. With lap times so close, it seems mildly pointless creating two different races and therefore splitting up the pool of talent, so we combine the two different machine specifications into one (very exciting) race.

We now run two classes in this race, but they are no longer split on machine specification, they are divided based on rider experience and licence grade. This reflects the lesser experience of some riders who contest the Sportsman class, rather than the Elite. This is our third season using this format, which was introduced because we felt that some riders moving up from the Pre-National classes would like to be able to contest a championship against riders with a similar level of experience.

The Elite class is the main championship and it is the fastest 600 racing class anywhere outside of the BSB paddock itself. If you can cut the mustard in this tremendously competitive class, you can acquit yourself well anywhere! Whatever happens the action will be as frantic as only 600cc racing can be.

The Thundersport 500 Elite, Sportsman and Seniors championships are the absolute cheapest possible way to go road racing on this planet. A whole race package can be picked up for less than the price of a top of the range helmet, boots & gloves. That said, the racing is hard and close - bordering on the frantic at times. The talent of a racer needn’t be judged by the value of the bike he/she happens to be sitting on, some of the most gifted riders in the country ride these humble parallel twins. The predominant choice of bike here is the Honda CB500, but once you’ve watched a couple of these races you’ll never look at one of these staid commuter bikes in quite the same way again. The 500 Seniors championship caters for riders of 40 years of age or older on 1st March of any given racing season.

Some of these lads are fulfilling a long term ambition to race that they simply didn’t have the resources to satisfy when they were younger. When you see the level of skill displayed by some of them, you have to think that they could have made a pretty good living at it if circumstances had been different.

The Freshman championship caters for riders who are just starting their racing careers and have no racing experience.

This is also very closely fought.

Today the non-qualifiers from the main Elite races will also join the Freshmen on this grid.

Thundersport GB started out with what was our Supertwin class back in 2009 (strangely enough it was called GP2 back then) and it has since appeared in Irish Road Races, the North-West 200 and more recently the TT Races.

GP2-Supertwins aren’t just twins, they are singles too - and always have been and the new cc limits are designed to re-balance the performance of all of the various machines that are eligible to compete.

Some long time participants in the class take the view that the class shouldn’t cater for anything other than a Kawasaki 650 or Suzuki 650, but there are plenty of others who relish the challenge of building something a little different.

STOCKTWINS ARE GP2-SUPERTWINS ON A BUDGET

Whereas the GP2Supertwin category has no tuning restrictions, we also compliment that with our more cost concious Stocktwins Championship.

Cost control was always designed to be a core principal of Stocktwins and the rules are designed to allow most things that are NOT performance enhancing.

The GB Racing British Military Inter Services Championship enters its 7th season with Thundersport GB in 2019.

In the current political climate, it is very difficult for any of our military personnel to plan out a full seasons racing.

International conflicts flare up remarkably quickly in the modern world and these guys can find themselves posted to danger zones anywhere in the world with as little as 48 hours notice. Therefore we have attempted to design a very flexible championship that is both spread across a whole season, yet at the same time has events that can be opted out of without penalty or danger of rendering a normal championship challenge practically unviable.

You don’t have to agree with decisions made by our armed services political masters in order to appreciate the risks that the personnel face in order to protect and preserve our way of life. These are just ordinary, real people who put themselves in harms way on a fairly regular basis on our behalf.

This year, instead of riders scoring points in their own individual classes, they all come together on one grid for a spectacular shoot out race on five separate occasions during the course of the season.

Points scoring for this race is based on 1 point for last place and an additional point for every place in front of that. There are bonus points for the podium places – 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd – as well as extra points for the lower capacity machines.

The teams are:Royal Air Force MSA who are our current champions to add to their titles from 2012 and in 2016.

Royal Navy Royal Marines Motorsport were champions in 2015 & 2018.

British Army Race Team who were victorious in 2013, 2014 and 2017.

Have you ever wondered about how healthy our sport is?

I don’t mean will racing a bike give you a six-pack, super-white teeth and a healthy tan. I mean how viable it is in the great scheme of things.

The ACU keep track of that sort of thing by keeping an eye on how many ACU Licences they sell each year.

We are interested primarily in Road Race Licence holders and that figure sits at around 6,000 – 6,500 every year. It’s been hovering around that figure since the late 1990s. Gone are the days when there were 38 ac�ve road race clubs and 15,000 road race licences.

With the gradual annual increase in licence fees though, the revenue for the ACU, from road racers, has remained at around £350,000 a year.

So, all is good?

Maybe, maybe not.................

I have always thought that trackdays probably help to get people interested in racing, but recently that idea has been given a bit of a reality check.

Something that had never really occurred to me was the way trackday riders see themselves.

Where we now live we get hordes of trackday riders coming over on the European 3 & 4 day events at Cartagena, Guadix and Almeria. If you go to any of the bars in the main towns that are popular with English visitors,

you can’t avoid bumping into them and because we drive a bright orange car with Thundersport GB decals all over it we are instantly iden�fiable.

Talk invariably ends up being about bikes and racing, but it seems that the actual defini�on of “racing” is a li�le vague.

Example A:“Yeah, we race. Not at race meetings, but on trackdays!” This is an actual direct quote.

When I point out that trackdays are just fun experience days and not actually racing, I get blank looks.

“Yeah, but we race each other, it’s the same thing!” hmmm.....

Example B:“I’ve done me ACU, so of course it’s racing!” Generally followed up by the brandishing of an ACU Novice Licence.

It turns out that quite a lot of them think they are actually racing!

Now forgive me for being picky, but that seems to be a bit like joining the Boy Scouts (or Girl Guides) and saying it was the same as doing three tours in Afghanistan or Syria with the special forces.

I’m sure that many of you are reading this and can relate to those conversa�ons from your own experience.

They walk among us you know!

I clearly remember many years ago some guy looking at one of my results

Oh yes, of course it’s just like racing! - Yawn

sheets over my shoulder and telling me that he’d lapped Lydden Hill faster on his road going ZZR1100 on a trackday. When I pointed out that the reason I was showing my mate the result sheet was because of the line underneath the main result “D. Stewart – Honda CBR600 43.006 seconds - New Lap Record” he looked blank.

“It means that nobody has gone faster mate........... on anything......ever!”

His faith that not only had he done a sub-42 second lap of Lydden Hill on his Shed-Shed-R, but he’d also come within a tenth of John Reynolds lap �me at Brands Hatch was unshakeable.

He even pointed at the hero blobs on his footrests to demonstrate that he’d touched them down. At this point I should point out that the guy concerned must have gone at least 21 stone. The shadow of his arse must have weighed at least 20 pounds, so I wasn’t surprised the whole thing was grounding out.

So. We’ve all met them, so what?

Well, the last �me someone brandished an ACU Novice Licence at me as some kind of proof of his track prowess, I started to think about why someone who clearly had no interest in going racing would want a compe��on licence.

Because he didn’t have a DVLA Road Licence!

He didn’t just want an ACU Licence, he needed it in order to get on track at most UK venues.

That made me wonder just how many of the 6,180 ACU Road Race Licence holders were actually ac�ve racers and how many were just trackdayers.

So I had a chat with Michelle and Jacqui at the ACU to see if we could work it out.

At this point I must thank Jacqui par�cularly for pu�ng aside her other work and digging into the reports to find the basic informa�on for me.

These ladies work really hard behind the scenes and don’t get the credit they deserve.

In 2019 there were just on 600 brand new Road Race Licence holders and I wondered how many of them actually went on to race and how many simply

went trackday riding.

There was no easy way to find that out, but I quite like a challenge.

Needless to say 14 hours later and with no fewer than 2,300 results sheets on my desk, I have a bit of a headache, but I also have the answers to those questions.

It’s no use just counting the new riders, you have to cross reference them all because most of them have raced with more than one club. The task was actually much more time consuming than I originally thought but the results were very surprising.

Of the 600 new riders, only 243 have actually competed at an ACU event, which means that there are 357 who have just obtained a licence to go trackday riding. Just 40.49% are actually racing.

There are several things that spring out of those figures. Those riders will probably mostly simply renew next year and they won’t show up as new licence holders.

More pertinently, there were probably similar numbers last year, the year before and the year before that, going back who knows how far?

For the sake of the argument, let’s just say 250 of them renew each year over a cycle of activity of 7 years (which is about the average time that riders

remain active historically). That’s upwards of 1,750 ACU Licence holders out of that 6,180 that have never raced at the moment and that figure is going up. It also doesn’t include riders who have raced but no longer do so, just renew their licences each year.

So does it matter?

Well yes it does, because the hidden statistic in that lot is that the “active” racers are going down year on year and that is why we have lost a record number of clubs over the past 15 years.

Perhaps it’s time to require an actual Race Result with each Novice licence renewal?

If you think that’s unfair, I would ask “If a rider doesn’t want to race, why does he need a race licence?”

The side effect could easily be that in coercing a rider to validate his/ her licence they might actually discover what the rest of us already know:- “Racing is the most fun you can possibly have with your clothes on!”

We could be doing them a massive favour and at the same time we could be saving a few of the smaller clubs that are on the brink.

We all need those other clubs, as without them taking race dates, the

venues will be forced to charge the rest of us more and you know who ends up ultimately picking up that particular tab ............... you, the rider, the parent, the sponsor, the end user.

I don’t want to sound like one of those guys parading up and down outside Kings Cross station with a sandwich board declaring “The End is Nigh!” but if we don’t recognise the issue, we can’t address it.

Car clubs are further into this cycle than we are and many of them are actually not viable any more. Running an event on a mainstream circuit with less than 100 competitors used to be unthinkable, now it is a fact of life for some car clubs. That can’t go on, we must do something to support these smaller clubs.

At the moment they are running on their built up reserves, but when they run out, it’ll be time to break out the rods and go fishing.

In the 4-wheeled world Time Attack is having some effect in moving track day drivers over to real competition, but the two-wheeled version just didn’t work.

We need to find a way of making these riders, who are already track enthusiasts, see that only real racing is the real deal and everything else is just a pale imitation that fools only fools.

Adam Boyle lost his life riding a 125cc roadbike on 27th May 2012 after being hit by a car. This was a devastating blow to his parents Shaun & Yvonne as well as to the rest of his family and friends.

Adam had spent the two previous days here at Oulton Park racing his 1000cc GP1 machine with great success and we never dreamed then that it would be the last time we ever saw this extremely likeable young man.

Every year riders come to Oulton Park wanting to win the Adam Boyle race purely because he was so well respected within the racing community for the manner in which he conducted himself.

This was never more true than last year when Lee Williams won the race and the depth of emotion in the Parc Ferme was felt all over the venue. A near speechless Willo senior is a very rare thing to behold.

We all know that motorcycles, both road & track, have inherent risks and I think it’s important to acknowledge that living on the edge is part of the attraction we all feel. I think the late Marco Simoncelli put it very succinctly “You live more in 5 minutes going fast on a bike than other people do in all their life!”

By that measure alone, Adam certainly lived a lot more than people with many times his years.

That emotional win for Lee Williams last year had another consequence for me personally. Some of you may recall that at our Oulton Park event we sadly lost another rider – Dwight Bond – who succumbed to injuries sustained in a race later that same evening.

We knew Adam very well, but we had only just met Dwight a month or two earlier so we hadn’t yet had time to get to know him. However, when we went to the service in his memory I came away wishing I had known him much better, such were the things we found out about him. Very many people obviously did know and love him and I realised how lucky they were to have been able to share a part of his life.

The silver lining of that experience is that instead of just feeling sad when I think about Adam, I now often smile about the good times we all shared.

Why have I chosen to put this on the marshals page?

Because I have since then spoken to quite a few of our volunteers about riders and friends we have all lost and relaying that subtle change in how I now think about these tragic losses has brought out one common reaction:“I’d never thought about it like that before!” and often as not it is accompanied by a lightening of their features and sometimes even a gentle smile.

And there is the final thing, whenever I think about Adam now, he is always wearing a gentle smile.
