LIVING ON THE RAZORS EDGE Like the horror film “Christine” sometimes a bike feels as though it has wicked intent in it’s DNA really gets the pulse racing for your average GP1 rider. These bikes are just so expensive to run, that every one of the riders on the grid has to make huge sacrifices in order to be able to keep up with the costs. So given that you can have just as much fun on a far more cost effective bike, what is it about these particular machines that has such a hold on the people who choose to ride them? The very first time you stand Inside that helmet are feelings only you will ever understand next to a Superbike that’s latest data-logger, not diamonds. warming up just waiting for you Like an alluring, beautiful, The bike craves a seamless shift to sling a leg over it, waiting sensuous Mistress, a fully tuned system, not seamed stockings. and tweaked Superbike is for you to cane it, growling and something so demanding on both The bike needs to be adorned daring you to thrash it, is an with carbon fibre, not a French your wallet and your leisure time exhilarating and semi-frightening maids uniform (although you that you can really only afford to experience. might just stretch to both if you’re It’s not scary at all if you just ride it a few days each month. The rest of your waking hours are lucky). intend to ride it, you know – spent working to earn the money Whilst racing in any of the other wind it up in all the gears on the to run it and waiting for your next classes can be just as much straights and just tickle it in the chance to sling a leg over it again fun, with the racing being just as corners - but that’s not the point, (the bike that is, not the Mistress). skilful, close and exhilarating, for is it? some people there is simply no The GB Racing Thundersport Nobody ever took a perfectly substitute for ponies. GP1 machinery is the highest adequate machine that Horsepower - big, brash, noisy specification kit in the already boasts a power and lots of it, is the only thing that output fierce enough to tear Thundersport GB paddock and running one of these machines is not to be taken lightly. It will eat every spare penny you have and then it will start on the pennies you don’t have! The rules are just about as open as it’s possible to be, allowing those who like to fettle and tune an almost completely free hand. In common with the ‘mythical’ Mistress, this can be demanding on the finances. The parallels are easy to see, the bike requires the
Get that throttle open as early as you dare!
the advertisements off of the roadside billboards at 50 paces and then tuned it, if they just wanted to ‘tickle it’ in the corners. No, this bike was tuned so that only a special rider could get the best out of it. Do you recognise yourself yet? On a highly tuned big bike with a surplus of power, every corner is a challenge waiting to bite you, wanting to bite you, daring you to just get close enough to its sharp teeth so that it can bite you. It’s like a thoroughbred horse that can sense if the rider is nervous and it will act up accordingly. Every braking zone is an exercise into just how deep you are prepared to look into the abyss of fear, making the little beads of sweat break out on your forehead and the sinews in your arms tighten unbearably, because this time you might have overcooked it. This time when the apex arrives you might not be anywhere near ready to peel in and the tyre wall will be rushing towards you faster than you can even think. Every apex is there just to tease you into daring to crack the throttle on just a little bit sooner, so that you experience that naughty squirm from the back tyre that is only just under control - or is it? Get it wrong and you’re going to need a parachute and a ticket to get back into the venue. Get it right and it’s absolute nirvana! If you’re circulating the place with a track from “The Carpenters Greatest Hits” running through your head, you’re simply not on the money. The soundtrack to caning this kind of machinery lies somewhere between Motorhead and Metallica – real thrash metal
stuff. Getting a reasonable lap time out of one of these bikes is easy (I’m sure even Karen Carpenter would agree) and you won’t experience any of those wild feelings whilst doing it. Some riders are happy with that, but they aren’t the ones riding on the razors edge. Getting a good lap time – a really good lap time – out of one of these beasts, is a challenge that at times feels like dancing with a hungry tiger and for some people – special people – absolutely nothing else will ever quite hit the spot. At the end of a hard race on a Superbike, if you’ve achieved your goals, it feels like you’ve confronted all of your deepest fears, quashed your most ardent adversary on his own turf and come away victorious. You’ve ridden so hard that you’ve virtually crashed at every corner and the only person present who doesn’t know it, is you, because despite all of that you’re still on those rubber hoops – only you and the Lord above know how, but you’ve done it. Your heart is beating at something like double its normal rate, your blood is singing in your ears. Your forearms feel as though you’ve just arm-wrestled a grizzly bear for 20 minutes. Your senses are heightened to such a degree that the whole world seems to have slowed down. Your eyes are like saucers
and no one – absolutely no one – can fully appreciate just how you are feeling for the next few minutes. Do you see yourself now? That my friends, is the drug that even the most sophisticated chemist, or depraved New York drug dealer simply can’t compete with. It makes all the overtime, late nights in the garage, going without the latest gizmos and everything else you had to do to get there, worthwhile. These machines go through tyres, brake pads, fuel and fluids like an overweight warthog through a bag of chocolate truffles. You have to be 100% dedicated in order to keep up with their insatiable appetite for consumables. The one thing it gives you in return is that stash of memories that only you can understand. When you’re old like me and people ask you about it, you’ll just shrug and say something like “They were great times, great fun and the buzz was worth every penny”. They won’t understand and you won’t bother to try and explain further, because unless you’ve done it, you simply can’t understand. That is their loss and your gain, as it will be one of the jewels in your memories until you’re as old and grey as I am.
This is what Superbikes looked like in my memories

THE NAME OF THE TIGER! After a conversation I had with Gary Thompson at the ACU yesterday I got to thinking about those horrible 20 minutes or so before you start practice at any event. Gary is amongst other things the Clerk of the Course at the Isle of Man TT Races. With just 20 minutes to go, there is very little to do, as all of the stress and donkey work has been done in the lead up to the event. All the putting into place of the last minute stuff doesn’t actually happen at the last minute, it gets done between 6.30am and about 8.30am on test day morning. These bits are just the final checks really, because if anything major is wrong at this point, you really are up “Cacka Creek” without a paddle. Not many Clerks of the Course think like me, many are supremely relaxed and haven’t got a care in the world at this stage and whilst I don’t understand that, I do in many ways envy that outlook. Some of how I feel about this obviously can’t be put into print, but I’ve written out some of it below, because I know that many of the Thundersport Race Team also feel the same about their own race day responsibilities. So why the nervousness, when you’ve been here for literally hundreds of previously successful events? I personally have now run over 750 events, ranging from club level Supermoto to Moto GP, yet I still have the same feelings before every race day and every test day. So from my own perspective:Firstly, it’s because I know that I (and I alone) am about to unleash something that is inherently dangerous. My words “OK assembly let ‘em go!” are the equivalent of pulling the cord on a 12 inch naval gun. You just hope that the gun is still
pointed in the right direction when it goes bang. There you go, I’ve said it:What we do is dangerous. That’s why we have so many control processes in place, from wearing helmets to rider training and everything in between. We reduce the risk factor at every turn, because we care deeply about the outcome. Danger is perceived by many as a negative thing, but it isn’t always that way in reality. Every human being’s psyche thrives on danger, it’s just the level that varies from individual to individual. If that wasn’t true there would be no theme parks, adventure playgrounds or contact sports of any kind. These things are the most popular activities in the world for one simple reason:- People like danger. We’re not allowed to call it danger though, we have to call it risk, adventurism or thrill seeking - but all these words are really just the snowflake way of saying danger. In much the same way as we apparently can’t say Chairman or Chairwoman of any committee, we now simply call them a Chair,
which is laughable to me because no one is sitting on them and they hopefully aren’t made of wood. This sanitised world demands that we use “challenges” rather than “problems” and this makes words like “danger” unacceptable. For me, and all of my team in each of their individual roles of responsibility, this is the reason that we are most nervous before firing the gun, it’s because we KNOW the dangers better than anyone else, because we have spent weeks/months/years of our lives assessing them and trying to mitigate them. Whilst almost everything can be mitigated to some extent, the residual danger is always there and the scary part is that mitigated risk is something we have to pass into the hands of others. For me some of it is passed to people under my control like marshals and officials, but the biggest chunk of it gets passed to the rider (and that is where our control of the situation becomes a act of faith). I probably feel it more than most because I was once that rider (and that bloke still lives inside my head) so I know how tenuous that can be.
“Is that the pack at Mountain Top Dave?”
Stuff always looks different from behind the handlebars. Secondly, we all also know that our people are imperfect. We do everything we can to train them, encourage them and try to make them into the best they can be - but they are not us. We always end up having to compromise in certain areas because we cannot recruit or retain the ideal candidate for every job. Some people are actually too good for the task they are given, whereas others aspire to roles that they are not ready for. I am lucky in that respect, because I reckon we’ve got it 98% covered and whilst it will never be 100%, we are always striving to make it that way. We know that our sport cannot function without volunteers and that we have to manage that resource carefully. On rare occasions we are confronted by some individuals whose confidence in themselves far outweighs their actual ability and understanding of the task at hand. Overconfidence scares me far more than insecurity in volunteers. I’ve met quite a few people who think that they could do my job and most of them would struggle to even understand the basics of complying with the law, let alone doing the job itself. Many people think all of our jobs are simple. This is true of almost every role we have in our organisation. The people doing those jobs know exactly what they are about, they weren’t chosen at random. I’ve also met a lot of people who don’t think they are up to a certain task who end up breezing it, purely because they put in the extra effort to ensure that they don’t let the team down.
WITH 37 GRIDS LIKE THIS FIRING AT YOU OVER EACH WEEKEND IT’S NO WONDER YOU FEEL THE BUTTERFLIES! I much prefer working with the latter category, partly because I know they will discharge their duties diligently and partly because they are like a blank canvas and can be moulded to do the job EXACTLY as I want it done. Third & Last, (from a Clerk of the Course perspective) we worry because we know that when we fire that gun anything that goes wrong is going to land in our lap. When the sticky stuff hits the fan, it’s always only going to be you left in the room getting splattered. It never seems to matter which part of the masterplan causes the disaster, or who didn’t do what they should have done, the can always ends up in the lap of the Clerk of the Course. I have been there and I still own the s**t splattered Tee-Shirt....... (no amount of Oxy-White will ever get rid of it) Even after we have endured the sleepless nights and a degree of unfair / inaccurate comments, we still come back for more though. Because, as marshals & officials, we are all addicted to the danger
COME & JOIN THE A-TEAM!
as much as any of the riders. For us it isn’t just 3 or 4 track sessions a day though, it starts well before first practice and doesn’t stop until the last bike is back in the paddock at the end of the day. We are all addicted to feeling those nerves, looking the fear in the eye and pretending that we are as calm as we look on the outside. Yes, of course we enjoy it, in much the same way as ordinary people might enjoy a ride on the worlds scariest roller-coaster ride. We also thrive on getting the job done in the safest and most efficient way possible. It’s a thrill being part of something so successful, but the thrill is partly taming the tiger and the Tigers name is “Danger!” In those 20 minutes before you start any event, you are paying the price for your addiction. Learn to live with it, because it will never go away, the Tiger will always be there.
The sense of achievement at the end of a busy weekend is on a par with that experienced by even the most ardent adrenaline-junky rider. If you’d like to find out more about becoming part of the team, just contact our Chief Marshal - John Pedersen (thundersportchiefmarshal@gmail.com) or our Chief Technical Officer - Stuart Bailey (Stubailey71@btinternet.com) by using the link on the Marshals & Officials page of www.thundersportgb.com or leave your details in the Paddock Office and we will contact you. You won’t regret it and it could change your life.

THUNDERSPORT GB RACE CLASS INFORMATION As Race Organisers & Promoters we must connually adapt the race classes we run to accommodate the wide range of machinery that is available to compete on. With the modern sportsbike classes this generally falls into line with the various Naonal and Internaonal factory supported series such as World Superbikes and Brish Superbikes. However, some of the very best racing takes place on machinery that you wouldn’t immediately associate with an ideal base for a race bike. I don’t think Mr Honda looked at the first CB500 to roll off of the producon line and thought “I bet that would make a great race bike!” Well the truth is that prey much anything with 2 wheels and an engine makes a prey good race bike if is racing against something of fairly equal power / weight / technology. Have a quick search on the internet for “Underbone Racing” and you’ll find some of the craziest and closest racing you’ve ever seen with Indonesian kids riding stripped down 125cc chicken chasers around the streets of Manila. As promoters and Organisers we have to come up with not only races to cater for prey much anything that riders can afford, but at the same me it has to make financial sense for us as the bills we have to pay to put events on are eyewatering and scary in equal measure with absolutely zero help from the circuit owners. So the “Colonel Sanders 125 Chicken Chaser Grand Prix” will probably never come to a mainstream Brish circuit, but we do have an incredibly wide range of classes here at Thundersport GB that you won’t see anywhere else. Here is a brief descripon of our classes (this is an outline only - please see full technical regs for more info):-
Thundersport GP1 These are the big capacity Open Class bikes featuring the latest Superbike & Superstock specificaon machinery. There are very few restricons on what you can do to these bikes as long as they comply with the standard ACU safety regulaons. Even acve suspension is technically permied, although it rarely appears as the off the shelf systems are not fully developed yet. We run 3 different levels of championship for these bikes dependant on each riders licence grade and experience. Elite riders are generally Naonal Licence holders or Clubman Licence holders who have a track record of excellence in previous seasons. Sportsman riders are generally Clubman Licence holders or newly qualified Naonal Licence holders or somemes riders coming from the smaller classes with limited experience. Cup class riders are Intermediate Novice Licence holders or Clubman Licence holders with less experience than that required to move into the Sportsman/Elite classes. Thundersport GP1 Classic & Golden Era Superbikes Around the year 2000 everything changed in the world of Superbikes with first the Yamaha R1 and then the first generaon of Suzuki GSXR 1000s usurping the older 750cc homologaon specials of the previous era. At that point we created a class for those great 750s and the Duca 996s that raced against them called Golden Era Superbikes. Then with the advent of modern electronics the original first generaon R1s and GSXRs suffered the same fate, so we created GP1 Classic to preserve this fantasc era of racing where most of the skill rested with the riders right wrist. The two classes now share a grid and compete against each other in a very compeve format. I remember parents ushering their children to safety when the Supersports were on their way to the grid and many of us thrived on that edgy reputaon. The first Yamaha R6 in 1998 changed the game and the older steel framed Honda CBRs that had dominated the class became the equivalent of taking a knife to a gunfight. As with the Superbike class, the advent of the next generaon of fuel-injected bikes made these older carbies almost obsolete as well, but the racing was so good that we now preserve both Steelies and Carbies together on this very compeve grid in their own classes. Thundersport 500 This class is the cheapest form of mainstream racing in Europe. The bikes are cheap, basically standard with plenful supplies of second hand spares. The racing itself is some of the closest and most compeve anywhere and the riders push these lile commuter bikes well beyond anything they were originally designed for. Due to the incredibly high numbers of riders we run 4 classes:Thundersport 500 Elite – These are the best riders in the class and would all be very compeve in any other class if they had the budget and desire to move categories. Thundersport 500 Sportsman – These riders are sll fairly inexperienced and are generally in the 2nd or 3rd year of compeon. Thundersport 500 Freshman – These are Novice Licence holders who have less than 5 race days experience at the start of the season. Thundersport 500 Seniors – These are riders of any licence grade who are over 40 years old on 1st March of the relevant year. Thundersport GP3 Superteens & Junior Cup The most successful junior championship in northern Europe is the Superteen Challenge, which has produced no less than 4 World Champions, 14 Brish Champions and a massive haul of Grand Prix and other Internaonal race victories since it’s incepon way back in 1996. Originally running as a one make class, before morphing into a miniature Supersport class on producon based machinery, the one consistent thing has been the close racing that produces future champions. Riders can begin to compete in this class at just 12 years old and connue right up unl they are 21 years old if they so wish. It isn’t actually rocket science, you simply need to pool as many of the up and coming racers together on fairly equal machinery and their sheer determinaon to improve does the rest. Here they get plenty of great quality track me and real world compeon. The Junior Cup element provides a place for the more torquey 400cc variants such as the Kawasaki Ninja 400 to compete in their own category without affecng the smaller capacity bikes unfairly. Supertwins don’t actually have to be twin cylinder bikes at all, they can be up to 2 cylinders, meaning that 4-stroke singles are also permied. There are also variaons in the rules dependent on whether a machine is water-cooled or aircooled due to the different technologies involved. This is very much designed to be an engineers class, where freedom to invent and create is encouraged. Even though the GP1 class does also have a lot of freedom to do this, the gains are oen very small due to the highly advanced nature of modern Superbikes. With the machines that make up the GP2-Supertwin class the base models are oen a lot more basic and therefore the tuning gains can be huge. It also helps in this respect as the bikes are cheaper to start with and thus more of the budget can be used for improving the bike. Stocktwins As the name implies, these are fairly standard twin cylinder machines with no tuning and very limited cycle parts upgrades to limit the costs involved. Favourite models are the Suzuki SV 650 and its derivaves and the Kawasaki ER6. There is a dispensaon on capacity for 2-valve air-cooled machines which sees them benefit from a capacity hike to 820cc. A well ridden Stocktwin can get in amongst the GP2-Supertwins and give them a real race despite the power deficit. This is yet another very cost effecve racing class.
