CONTROL & REGULATION In our lives and our sport, control and regulation are ever preset

SPEED TRAPS CAN BE FOUND IN THE MOST SURPRISING PLACES With restrictions on our freedoms easing at the moment, I got to thinking about restrictions in racing and particularly about regulations.

We have had all sorts of people enforcing our Covid restrictions and looking at some of them they obviously view themselves as some kind of latter day Dirty Harry figures. You know “Go ahead punk, take your mask off and make my day” - so I can give you a fixed penalty notice.

Regulations in our sport are all about keeping us safe and keeping the racing as fair as it can be within reason.

Let’s be honest right at the outset,

money counts in racing, as it does in many other aspects of life. If you can afford the best bike, new tyres for every race and the best mechanic to help with your set up and race preparation, you will have an advantage.

I have never found a successful way of negating the power of money, but I have tried for the past 27 years.

Rule Number 2 in writing a set of technical regulations for any class is never to write something down that you cannot enforce or police.

Many championships around the world have extremely detailed and complex regulations that the organisers have absolutely zero

chance of enforcing.

This is not for want of trying in many instances, although in some cases it is and the regulation is not worth the paper it is written on.

The main problem with enforcement is entirely due to Rule Number 1.

Rule Number 1 is that the very best technical minds in the business are often the ones who stand to make money out of rule breaking. In my experience the cleverest cheats were always one step ahead of any post race technical controls.

I witnessed this first hand on the slow down lap of a one make support race at Donington Park where the rider in front of me removed an item (later found to be a magnetic device) from under the seat unit and threw it into the grass at Starkeys Bridge.

The control dyno found his bike and mine to be identical on power even though he had been pulling 7 or 8 bike lengths on me on every straight.

This was back in the 1990s and stuff has become a lot more sophisticated since then, with diodes hidden in looms and multiple handlebar and underseat switches to change post race performance becoming commonplace between 2008 and the present day.

So if post race dyno checks are worthless, what do you do?

Well, there are two things that need to be done at pretty much the same time.

IN ALL THE EXCITEMENT, I FORGOT HOW MANY SHOTS I FIRED! First is to simplify the regulations to allow modifications that cannot be easily checked in the real world (it’s no good saying the crankshaft must remain standard unless you intend to strip every bike to check that it is, for example). Removing pointless restrictions means that these modifications don’t need to be hidden and are therefore more affordable for less well off riders. Only one make classes escape this clause.

Having a fast bike will always be an advantage and richer riders will always have access to better kit, more tyres, better fuel and more assistance but reducing that cost gap is crucial to the health of our sport.

Secondly, and arguably more importantly, find a way of measuring real time performance during the race, rather than conducting nonrelevant tests after the race is over.

It is pointless to tune a bike outside of the regulations if that means you daren’t use that

performance in a race situation and therefore a fast bike will always leave a visible trace on a speed trap.

I have used speed data for a long time now and although we do sometimes share that data with competitors, we more often than not keep it to ourselves.

Why? Well, if you show the speed-trap data on a result sheet, you also show the location of the data collection point as well and that makes it easy to work around for any unethical rider.

Having an undisclosed data collection point and often

moving it during an event, gives us as organisers the advantage.

This has proven to be the most reliable tool we have in detecting machines which do not conform to their specific class regulations performance wise.

I can only tell you that if I order an engine strip on 3 bikes (3 is the norm) it is because I have a very good idea which one will be non-compliant. I have only been wrong once in the past 6 seasons.

Take a look at how close the racing is in our most controlled series, Thundersport 500, and you will not only see the benefits of this cost wise, but also that it creates great racing throughout the grid.

The sad fact is that racing is expensive and money does count, but a lid can be kept on the cost differences by constantly updating control processes.

We do of course have other control tools in our armoury, but (just like Dirty Harry) we are not going to tell the enemy how many bullets we have left.

“You know, in all the excitement I clean forgot whether I fired 5 or 6 bullets! Are you feeling lucky?”

If you are one of the less well off riders, your biggest tool is your willpower to overcome that disadvantage and we are all rooting for you, as are many of the public!

GP ORIGINALS

Racing Two-Strokes from the Epic Era of GP Racing category for riders over the age of 55. This has proved ultra compe��ve with several entrants benefi�ng from more than 40 seasons experience on these bikes. Many of the vets are giving the youngsters a serious run for their money.

Race One of the 2019 GP originals smokes its way in Paddock Bend 1970s–early ’80s Grand Prix two-strokes at Donington Park with Thundersport GB. GP Originals launched their 2019 season with Thundersport GB at Brands Hatch back in March 2019 and it was a spectacular opener for the rapidly growing post classic Grand Prix series.

A near capacity grid of smoking twostrokes, resplendent in period livery, screamed down Paddock Hill in the Spring sunshine to kick the weekend off in fine style. They then joined us again at Donington Park later that year, for what turned out to be a very soggy weekends racing.

THE SERIES The focus at GP Originals is on period Grand Prix racing. Eligibility for the Series concentrates on the right diameter forks, brakes and bodywork from back-in-the-day, vintage liveries are ac�vely encouraged. Engines may be tuned on the inside but the exterior must retain the original shape and format. Every machine is on the same treaded, race compound Avon tyre… no wets, no warmers. The �ghter rules at GP Originals allow more machines to be affordable and compe��ve; two-stroke know-how and a talented pilot is what makes the difference at the front of the field.

Look out for a few genuine GP Originals over the weekend as this class a�racts the old stars as part of the suppor�ng cast in the paddock. GP stars Charlie Williams and Mar�n Wimmer, plus engineers Ron Maxton, Jim Lomas and Tony Green were all part of the scene in the 70s and 80s and are back in the fold

at GP Originals today.

THE CLASSES The 350cc class bikes display blue number boards and caters for Grand Prix machines to 1981, this period of racing was dominated by Yamaha’s mighty TZ. However, many ingenious engineers and frame builders were at work during this �me and privateers were capable of taking on the factory teams at Grand Prix level.

GP Originals has spearheaded a resurgence of 250cc machines. Every 250 is pre-1984 and although they can give away as much as 10-20BHP to their 350 cousins they are able to capitalise on three years addi�onal development on brakes and chassis design.

THUNDERSPORT GB RACE CLASS INFORMATION As Race Organisers & Promoters we must con�nually adapt the race classes we run to accommodate the wide range of machinery that is available to compete on. With the modern sportsbike classes this generally falls into line with the various Na�onal and Interna�onal factory supported series such as World Superbikes and Bri�sh Superbikes.

However, some of the very best racing takes place on machinery that you wouldn’t immediately associate with an ideal base for a race bike. I don’t think Mr Honda looked at the first CB500 to roll off of the produc�on line and thought “I bet that would make a great race bike!”

Well the truth is that pre�y much anything with 2 wheels and an engine makes a pre�y good race bike if is racing against something of fairly equal power / weight / technology. Have a quick search on the internet for “Underbone Racing” and you’ll find some of the craziest and closest racing you’ve ever seen with Indonesian kids riding stripped down 125cc chicken chasers around the streets of Manila.

As promoters and Organisers we have to come up with not only races to cater for pre�y much anything that riders can afford, but at the same �me it has to make financial sense for us as the bills we have to pay to put events on are eyewatering and scary in equal measure with absolutely zero help from the circuit owners.

So the “Colonel Sanders 125 Chicken Chaser Grand Prix” will probably never come to a mainstream Bri�sh circuit, but we do have an incredibly wide range of classes here at Thundersport GB that you won’t see anywhere else.

Here is a brief descrip�on of our classes (this is an outline only - please see full technical regs for more info):-

Thundersport GP1 These are the big capacity Open Class bikes featuring the latest Superbike & Superstock specifica�on machinery.

There are very few restric�ons on what you can do to these bikes as long as they comply with the standard ACU safety regula�ons. Even ac�ve suspension is technically permi�ed, although it rarely appears as the off the shelf systems are not fully developed yet.

We run 3 different levels of championship for these bikes dependant on each riders licence grade and experience.

Elite riders are generally Na�onal Licence holders or Clubman Licence holders who have a track record of excellence in previous seasons.

Sportsman riders are generally Clubman Licence holders or newly qualified Na�onal Licence holders or some�mes riders coming from the smaller classes with limited experience.

Cup class riders are Intermediate Novice Licence holders or Clubman Licence holders with less experience than that required to move into the Sportsman/Elite classes.

Thundersport GP1 Classic & Golden Era Superbikes Around the year 2000 everything changed in the world of Superbikes with first the Yamaha R1 and then the first genera�on of Suzuki GSXR 1000s usurping the older 750cc homologa�on specials of the previous era. At that point we created a class for those great 750s and the Duca� 996s that raced against them called Golden Era Superbikes. Then with the advent of modern electronics the original first genera�on R1s and GSXRs suffered the same fate, so we created GP1 Classic to preserve this fantas�c era of racing where most of the skill rested with the riders right wrist.

The two classes now share a grid and compete against each other in a very compe��ve format.

I remember parents ushering their children to safety when the Supersports were on their way to the grid and many of us thrived on that edgy reputa�on.

The first Yamaha R6 in 1998 changed the game and the older steel framed Honda CBRs that had dominated the class became the equivalent of taking a knife to a gunfight. As with the Superbike class, the advent of the next genera�on of fuel-injected bikes made these older carbies almost obsolete as well, but the racing was so good that we now preserve both Steelies and Carbies together on this very compe��ve grid in their own classes.

Thundersport 500 This class is the cheapest form of mainstream racing in Europe. The bikes are cheap, basically standard with plen�ful supplies of second hand spares. The racing itself is some of the closest and most compe��ve anywhere and the riders push these li�le commuter bikes well beyond anything they were originally designed for.

Due to the incredibly high numbers of riders we run 4 classes:Thundersport 500 Elite – These are the best riders in the class and would all be very compe��ve in any other class if they had the budget and desire to move categories.

Thundersport 500 Sportsman – These riders are s�ll fairly inexperienced and are generally in the 2nd or 3rd year of compe��on.

Thundersport 500 Freshman – These are Novice Licence holders who have less than 5 race days experience at the start of the season.

Thundersport 500 Seniors – These are riders of any licence grade who are over 40 years old on 1st March of the relevant year.

Thundersport GP3 Superteens & Junior Cup The most successful junior championship in northern Europe is the Superteen Challenge, which has produced no less than 4 World Champions, 14 Bri�sh Champions and a massive haul of Grand Prix and other Interna�onal race victories since it’s incep�on way back in 1996.

Originally running as a one make class, before morphing into a miniature Supersport class on produc�on based machinery, the one consistent thing has been the close racing that produces future champions. Riders can begin to compete in this class at just 12 years old and con�nue right up un�l they are 21 years old if they so wish.

It isn’t actually rocket science, you simply need to pool as many of the up and coming racers together on fairly equal machinery and their sheer determina�on to improve does the rest. Here they get plenty of great quality track �me and real world compe��on.

The Junior Cup element provides a place for the more torquey 400cc variants such as the Kawasaki Ninja 400 to compete in their own category without affec�ng the smaller capacity bikes unfairly.

Supertwins don’t actually have to be twin cylinder bikes at all, they can be up to 2 cylinders, meaning that 4-stroke singles are also permi�ed. There are also varia�ons in the rules dependent on whether a machine is water-cooled or aircooled due to the different technologies involved.

This is very much designed to be an engineers class, where freedom to invent and create is encouraged. Even though the GP1 class does also have a lot of freedom to do this, the gains are o�en very small due to the highly advanced nature of modern Superbikes.

With the machines that make up the GP2-Supertwin class the base models are o�en a lot more basic and therefore the tuning gains can be huge. It also helps in this respect as the bikes are cheaper to start with and thus more of the budget can be used for improving the bike.

Stocktwins As the name implies, these are fairly standard twin cylinder machines with no tuning and very limited cycle parts upgrades to limit the costs involved. Favourite models are the Suzuki SV 650 and its deriva�ves and the Kawasaki ER6.

There is a dispensa�on on capacity for 2-valve air-cooled machines which sees them benefit from a capacity hike to 820cc. A well ridden Stocktwin can get in amongst the GP2-Supertwins and give them a real race despite the power deficit. This is yet another very cost effec�ve racing class.
