THE VIRUS CAN’T STOP YOU IF YOU’RE BORN TO RIDE

Everyone has something in their life that when they do it just feels so “right”, that they don’t want it to end – Ever!

Whatever that particular thing is changes throughout the course of your life, but whatever it happens to be for you at any given time is as important to you as existence itself. It forms the soundtrack of your life and just like the music you listen to it will transform and evolve with you as a person.

The year of lockdowns and restrictions on the freedoms that we had always taken for granted, has robbed us of being able to pursue the simple joy of life. Because that’s what we’re talking about here – fundamental freedoms!

For some of us those freedoms are expressed in the simple joy of riding a motorcycle – fast and it can be highly addictive.

On track you are alone in that tiny confined space of your crash helmet, yet the world you are occupying seems bigger and more important than ever before.

There are times when you really do feel that you really were simply born to ride. That rush

you get from racing a bike is almost impossible to explain to others who haven’t been there and done it, but it is as real as the ground beneath your feet.

Unlike other sensations of euphoria, getting your fix doesn’t reduce the craving.

I can clearly remember unloading the bike at the workshop and straight away rummaging around for a copy of Motorcycle News to look up where the next meeting was that I could enter to do it all again.

No, we didn’t have the internet, smart phones or google to help us out back then. A 75 pence investment in Motorcycle News was mandatory every week if you wanted to know where the next race meeting was.

We all threw away the big bit of the paper with endless “600 shootout”, “which cruiser is best”, or “does my bum look big in these draggin jeans” articles and just kept the middle bit with the race pages in it.

Racing was what we lived for, simple as that!

I know that it’s tough on a Monday morning, going back to ‘normal’ life because everything

seems to be in slow motion. The days drag because all you can think about is your next race and the people you work with just don’t understand.

If you’ve ever tried to explain your weekend to a non-biker you’ll understand what I mean, as the “Oh, that must have been nice!” comment at the end simply doesn’t scratch the surface of how you felt.

“Nice?

No it wasn’t nice, it was the absolute dogs danglies you idiot!”

Is what you want to say, but it’s best to just move on.

Bernadette and I often get asked by people outside the industry, what exactly we do for a living. Sometimes in my more sardonic moods, or simply just to provoke a reaction, I reply :- “I’m a drug dealer!” which can be a bit of a conversation stopper at times, dependant on the company we’re in.

In many ways that statement is true though, but it’s not the kind of dealing that requires me to stand in a dark corner of a night club, or to hang around outside the school gates. The “E”s we deal in are Endorphines and the really hard stuff for the real addicts is Adrenalin – and lots of it! Both of these are totally legal and an absolutely essential part of enjoying life to the full.

AND THAT is what has been stolen from us over the past 14 months of imposed restrictions made by well meaning politicians who have lost far less than those of us who are used to living on the edge.

Danger is all around us, all of the time, but we all manage that

danger in different ways. Having that risk management imposed on every aspect of our lives has been a bit of a culture shock for many of us.

When I wrote the first Covid Management Plan for the restart of our sport last year, I had many interactions with many very ‘grey’ men and women (not sure how many were nonbinary ‘grey’ people, because I didn’t ask) and the fact that their fixation was focussed on just one risk really shocked me.

I tried to explain that on track the risk of Covid 19 paled into insignificance when balanced against the other risks we were trying to manage and limit, but they didn’t care.

Everything in life had to bow to the superior risk of Covid, even though it never reached one fifth of the levels associated with ‘natural death’. (Because we’re all going to die of something) Possibly boredom if the lockdown advocates have anything to do with it.

A rider in their 20’s or 30’s is not going to consider a virus as the greatest danger in parting company with a 200mph missile on a race track, or that the marshal picking him/her up possibly may have undiagnosed Covid 19. The two inherent risks are so vastly different as to be almost in different worlds.

So yes, we have had to adapt our sport, but we cannot take our focus off of the main risk – velocity versus immovable object.

Yes, of course some of the thrill of racing is in the element of danger - but if you look into the eyes of any racer who has just come off track you’ll see someone who is more vibrantly alive in that moment than anyone else you know. We do still have that fundamental right to live our lives as we wish, as long as it doesn’t adversely affect others.

I’m not some kind of fringe lunatic anti-vaxxer – I have actually been vaccinated – and I understood the need to reduce the potential burden on the health services whilst the situation was being brought under control. However, I do sense that some of those ‘grey’ men, women and people in comfortable shoes have developed a taste for controlling our lives well into the future and I object to that as a free thinking person.

Motorsport has done an excellent job of managing the extra risks throughout the pandemic, without giving up on the core safety infrastructure we already had. Just another few weeks of minor restrictions should see us return to

something more normal and we must resist any attempts to justify slowing that down. Let’s all concentrate on just giving an extra bit of space to those around us and cutting a little slack to those who get things slightly wrong.

It should be remembered that it isn’t just the racers who have been deprived of their fixes though.

I have seen many people on pit wall – wives, girlfriends, mothers & fathers - with their adrenal glands working every bit as hard as the rider out on track.

Frustration, satisfaction, joy and despair all compete for top spot during the course of pretty much every race weekend for everyone involved, including the marshals and officials. Yes, we have goals and ambitions too!

We want to be the best and to win our own particular race against danger and the timetable.

Having experienced the sport from all of the different perspectives, it will come as no surprise to you to find out that the actual racing aspect is the most intense by a country mile and the desire to do it never leaves you. Even now, nearly 25 years after I gave up racing, I still wake in the middle of the night from the most vivid dreams of fairing scraping racing and it feels as though it’s as real as it was back in the day.

If you’re lucky enough to be right in the middle of that real life experience right now, savour it and enjoy every moment of it because it won’t last forever – but the dreams will stay with you until you’re old and grey!

THE FOLICALLY CHALLENGED WORLD OF TECHNICAL CONTROL We always dedicate at least one page in each programme to our highly valued volunteers, but when you mention the volunteers people automatically first think about the marshals around the circuit.

These are of course extremely important, because they represent about two thirds of our volunteer workforce.

The other third includes race administration, startline staff, recovery crews, assembly area team and the technical officials.

This last group, Technical Team, are probably the ones who inspire nervousness in new racers, as many think of the old “Say no wherever possible!” attitude of scrutineers of many years ago.

When I first attended an ACU Technical Seminar many years ago, the introduction of the guy running the course was “They say that in racing, in order to finish first, first you’ve got to finish!” he then added “But I say, that in order to even start, first you’ve got to get past me!”

I sat there and thought that was exactly the sort of attitude I wanted to banish from our sport forever. I was quite young back then and many older and wiser heads told me that I would never be able to change the attitudes of those dinosaurs and to an extent, they were right.

Many of those old school ‘long coats’ as Roy Hanks used to call them, could not be changed, but some were in fact as sick of it as I was and wanted to modernise.

My answer was that if I couldn’t change the attitude, I would change the people.

A cull of those unwilling to change took place and I was accused by some of being a Dictator and a Control Freak.

I still don’t understand why people say that as though it should be considered as a bad thing.

My current team will recognise those traits clearly and they regularly tease me about it, whilst coming up with ever more creative ways of putting me in situations that they know make me uncomfortable.

It’s a game they play and it’s all part of being a team.

In the same way that our current team of marshals are the best I’ve ever worked with, the Technical Team we now have is the best and most rounded we have ever had.

They don’t feel the need to march around like a lost brigade of the SS, because they want exactly the same things as the rest of us. Simply

put, they want everyone to enjoy their racing in a safe and fair environment.

The atmosphere in our Technical Bay is one that is welcoming and ready to find solutions to problems that arise, rather than seeing problems as irreversible roadblocks.

We like to say yes wherever possible, but where that is not possible we want to find a solution.

We of course have to adhere to the insurance rules governing our sport and we have an obligation to see that fair play is maintained, so a firm but fair approach is key to our success.

Some think that it is a requirement to be totally bald before being accepted to the Technical Team, but Stuart says that is actually a sideeffect and that Rob & Phil had full heads of hair before signing up. THUNDERSPORT GB RACE CLASS INFORMATION As Race Organisers & Promoters we must con�nually adapt the race classes we run to accommodate the wide range of machinery that is available to compete on. With the modern sportsbike classes this generally falls into line with the various Na�onal and Interna�onal factory supported series such as World Superbikes and Bri�sh Superbikes.

However, some of the very best racing takes place on machinery that you wouldn’t immediately associate with an ideal base for a race bike. I don’t think Mr Honda looked at the first CB500 to roll off of the produc�on line and thought “I bet that would make a great race bike!”

Well the truth is that pre�y much anything with 2 wheels and an engine makes a pre�y good race bike if is racing against something of fairly equal power / weight / technology. Have a quick search on the internet for “Underbone Racing” and you’ll find some of the craziest and closest racing you’ve ever seen with Indonesian kids riding stripped down 125cc chicken chasers around the streets of Manila.

As promoters and Organisers we have to come up with not only races to cater for pre�y much anything that riders can afford, but at the same �me it has to make financial sense for us as the bills we have to pay to put events on are eyewatering and scary in equal measure with absolutely zero help from the circuit owners.

So the “Colonel Sanders 125 Chicken Chaser Grand Prix” will probably never come to a mainstream Bri�sh circuit, but we do have an incredibly wide range of classes here at Thundersport GB that you won’t see anywhere else.

Here is a brief descrip�on of our classes (this is an outline only - please see full technical regs for more info):-

Thundersport GP1 These are the big capacity Open Class bikes featuring the latest Superbike & Superstock specifica�on machinery.

There are very few restric�ons on what you can do to these bikes as long as they comply with the standard ACU safety regula�ons. Even ac�ve suspension is technically permi�ed, although it rarely appears as the off the shelf systems are not fully developed yet.

We run 3 different levels of championship for these bikes dependant on each riders licence grade and experience.

Elite riders are generally Na�onal Licence holders or Clubman Licence holders who have a track record of excellence in previous seasons.

Sportsman riders are generally Clubman Licence holders or newly qualified Na�onal Licence holders or some�mes riders coming from the smaller classes with limited experience.

Cup class riders are Intermediate Novice Licence holders or Clubman Licence holders with less experience than that required to move into the Sportsman/Elite classes.

Thundersport GP1 Classic & Golden Era Superbikes Around the year 2000 everything changed in the world of Superbikes with first the Yamaha R1 and then the first genera�on of Suzuki GSXR 1000s usurping the older 750cc homologa�on specials of the previous era. At that point we created a class for those great 750s and the Duca� 996s that raced against them called Golden Era Superbikes. Then with the advent of modern electronics the original first genera�on R1s and GSXRs suffered the same fate, so we created GP1 Classic to preserve this fantas�c era of racing where most of the skill rested with the riders right wrist.

The two classes now share a grid and compete against each other in a very compe��ve format.

I remember parents ushering their children to safety when the Supersports were on their way to the grid and many of us thrived on that edgy reputa�on.

The first Yamaha R6 in 1998 changed the game and the older steel framed Honda CBRs that had dominated the class became the equivalent of taking a knife to a gunfight. As with the Superbike class, the advent of the next genera�on of fuel-injected bikes made these older carbies almost obsolete as well, but the racing was so good that we now preserve both Steelies and Carbies together on this very compe��ve grid in their own classes.

Thundersport 500 This class is the cheapest form of mainstream racing in Europe. The bikes are cheap, basically standard with plen�ful supplies of second hand spares. The racing itself is some of the closest and most compe��ve anywhere and the riders push these li�le commuter bikes well beyond anything they were originally designed for.

Due to the incredibly high numbers of riders we run 4 classes:Thundersport 500 Elite – These are the best riders in the class and would all be very compe��ve in any other class if they had the budget and desire to move categories.

Thundersport 500 Sportsman – These riders are s�ll fairly inexperienced and are generally in the 2nd or 3rd year of compe��on.

Thundersport 500 Freshman – These are Novice Licence holders who have less than 5 race days experience at the start of the season.

Thundersport 500 Seniors – These are riders of any licence grade who are over 40 years old on 1st March of the relevant year.

Thundersport GP3 Superteens & Junior Cup The most successful junior championship in northern Europe is the Superteen Challenge, which has produced no less than 4 World Champions, 14 Bri�sh Champions and a massive haul of Grand Prix and other Interna�onal race victories since it’s incep�on way back in 1996.

Originally running as a one make class, before morphing into a miniature Supersport class on produc�on based machinery, the one consistent thing has been the close racing that produces future champions. Riders can begin to compete in this class at just 12 years old and con�nue right up un�l they are 21 years old if they so wish.

It isn’t actually rocket science, you simply need to pool as many of the up and coming racers together on fairly equal machinery and their sheer determina�on to improve does the rest. Here they get plenty of great quality track �me and real world compe��on.

The Junior Cup element provides a place for the more torquey 400cc variants such as the Kawasaki Ninja 400 to compete in their own category without affec�ng the smaller capacity bikes unfairly.

Supertwins don’t actually have to be twin cylinder bikes at all, they can be up to 2 cylinders, meaning that 4-stroke singles are also permi�ed. There are also varia�ons in the rules dependent on whether a machine is water-cooled or aircooled due to the different technologies involved.

This is very much designed to be an engineers class, where freedom to invent and create is encouraged. Even though the GP1 class does also have a lot of freedom to do this, the gains are o�en very small due to the highly advanced nature of modern Superbikes.

With the machines that make up the GP2-Supertwin class the base models are o�en a lot more basic and therefore the tuning gains can be huge. It also helps in this respect as the bikes are cheaper to start with and thus more of the budget can be used for improving the bike.

Stocktwins As the name implies, these are fairly standard twin cylinder machines with no tuning and very limited cycle parts upgrades to limit the costs involved. Favourite models are the Suzuki SV 650 and its deriva�ves and the Kawasaki ER6.

There is a dispensa�on on capacity for 2-valve air-cooled machines which sees them benefit from a capacity hike to 820cc. A well ridden Stocktwin can get in amongst the GP2-Supertwins and give them a real race despite the power deficit. This is yet another very cost effec�ve racing class.
